I’m writing the rough draft of my Tezuka Star System script in this book. The paper’s texture is different on each side. One is smooth while the other is textured. I thought the texture paper might work better for collages, as you can see on page 4. They’ll serve as the mood boards for what I’m writing about.

reorganized my blog stuff and adding new ones and I don't wanna get kicked from my account for url hoarding??? so getting rid of my anime blog because I'm thinking about keeping THIS blog more fandom focused and then making another account for my personal stuff?
I think that's more befitting. we'll see

Some Star System actors furrifications I did back in January. I still really like these! Since it’s not very clear Hamegg is a fox/weasel hybrid thing.

As a kid, Skunk’s face in the Astro Boy manga always creeped me out. I wound up looking him up on the Astro Boy wiki recently and found out he was modeled on the actor Richard Widmark, specifically the role he played in The Kiss Of Death. And boy oh boy did my inner ten-year-old get goosebumps when I saw him…it’s incredible how you can immediately see the resemblance despite the extremely simplified and cartoony style of Tezuka’s work

This is my post for October 29th. Assemble it to find out what it's about! (spoiler: It's Buddy).
I'm still reading Astro Boy. It's a puzzling manga (wow, talk about a thin premise to relate the rant to the Buddy of the day). I'm already at the last few books in the collection, and like I said yesterday, those are the "bad" ones - except they're not bad at all. The Blue Knight chapter (and its sequel chapters) were pretty interesting. But, in the introduction, Tezuka mentioned that back when he was publishing them, the manga's popularity plummeted. Because he was pushed by editors to make Astro Boy an "edgy" hero like the ones from Gekiga of the time. So back in the sixties, that was Astro Boy jumping the shark. Like when Superman died in the nineties, or when Spiderman made that deal with the devil, or Wonder Woman lost her powers and started wearing white tights.
But as someone who wasn't around back then (and, you know, not Japanese), looking back, it's an interesting story. It's a bit like the Astro Boy version of the Death of Superman, it's clear Tezuka wrote the best story he could given the constraints he was under. So even if it's listed under the "worst" Astro Boy stories, it turned out pretty good.
Of course, it's just fine and dandy for me to say so since I have the priviledge of hindsight. All the stuff that matters so much to fans of the time, the stuf that gets them saying their fandom is RUINED FOREVER just looks like an interesting chapter in the character's history.
It kind of makes me wonder, if all the stuff I hate nowadays will be looked back with fondness by future generations.
There's other interesting stuff worth mentioning from the Astro Boy collection. In one of the books, Tezuka's introduction freely admits one of the stories was drawn by Shotaro Ishinomori. It's not secret that Tezuka didn't draw all of his manga. And being used to western comics, I really dislike the idea of other artists not being credited in a story. But Tezuka's 'admission', if you can even call it that (it was more like telling a story about how amazing an artist Ishinomori was), didn't feel like him being an egotist who finally comes clean, but rather being an overworked artist praising another overworked artist in the system they happened to be in. Though maybe I'm being too lenient. I can't tell.
The Ishinomori-drawn story, Electro, also featured the character Skunk Sakai. I was surprised to find out his design was based on none other than Orson Welles, the american director. Very interesting stuff.

Those old creepypasta fanfiction where the hot emo killer boys all live in a mansion together. But it's Tezuka villains (Rock Holmes, Hamegg, Duke Red, Skunk Kusai. Etc.) living together in a shitty little shack and being pathetic.

I came up with a story inspired by Skunk Kusai sometime during college. I've recently became interested in the idea again, and I thought it'd be fun to share it with you all. I'm not sure how legible the text in the first photo is. At this point, it doesn't matter since some of the details don't line up with the recent brainstorms. It does summarize the opening premise though.
This is Skunk's basic backstory in the plot. In the actual story, he runs into Uran, a highly advanced robot made to be an army nurse robot (her name is an acronym for United Red Army Nurse). Uran follows Skunk on his journey so she can treat his wound. So basically Skunk keeps Uran around to keep himself alive, and Uran follows him like "Let me heal you, please."
Skunk's outfit was drawn almost directly from his uniform from Metropolis, and his face was from Astro Boy 2003.

The original picture: https://www.deviantart.com/machinegirl-da/art/ryouga-san-is-angry-104031284 all the way from 2008(!) no less! This is another redraw I've been struggling with for several months, I feel as though there's some stuff not 100% right with it. I like how it looks, but feels like I should do more for it. The constant burnout/art block is not helping either. Anyhow, here is the current state of the redraw. If I try to do more, I'll only get more annoyed with working on it. Compared to the original drawing, I decided to take a different route with this one. I'm really really pleased I chose this broken glass idea for the background, definitely wanna improve on that plus other things. Anatomy was a absolute pain to do, especially struggled with Drake, skunk and Ryouga... There was actually two other versions I did before settling for this one. Lastly, I'm happy with this rendition of Ryouga. I wanted to capture some of his cockiness/cheek I can imagine him expressing. Astro Boy, Drake, Skunk Kusai and Dr. O'shay Belong to Tezuka Productions. Original character Ryouga and art belong to ME. NO STEALING.
