My back story. Isolation, closed family culture & Ableism
Written by Ashton Deroy Tonight I learned one of my Autistic Peers from Public school thought I hated them. Maybe I was a bit of a bully. For that I made amends. I was sure to tell them that wasn’t true I could never hate them. DON’T BE A BULLY LIKE I WAS! I explained my ADHD and how I grew up to them. This needs to be said. If you have an autistic child? DO NOT isolate them from their peers.…

"Potato Racket Denied Here," Montreal Star. May 12, 1943. Page 3. --- Prices Board Refutes Black Market Charge ---- Allegations from Toronto that one of the contributory factors in the potato shortage in that area was the existence of a black market in Montreal which was paying higher than ceiling prices for Maritime potatoes, was denied by Wartime Prices and Trade Board officials here today.
"To date the board has received only four complaints concerning potatoes," a representative declared, "and certainly that does not indicate that a black market is operating in the city."
Ottawa Restricts Sales OTTAWA, May 12 - (С.Р.) - Sale of certified seed potatoes for any use other than planting is prohibited in a Prices Board order is- sued last night. The order, effective May 13, covers the period until Saturday, June 5, considered the normal end of the potato planting season.
The Board's announcement said evidence had reached it that consumers in some instances have been supplementing short stocks of table potatoes by purchasing for consumption potatoes of seed quality, thus reducing the amount of seed available for production of the 1943 crop.
Officials of the Prices Board's food administration said last night that suspension until June 30 of the 10 per cent war exchange tax on potatoes imported from the United States, provided in a recent order-in-council, should help to ease the current potato shortage in Canada.
The order-in-council, which became effective May 1, exempts potatoes from the tax for the two-month period "to enable this commodity to be sold under the established price ceiling." Officials said the tax amounted to about 25 cents a bushel.

National Hot Tea Day
The perfect time for a cup of tea is National Hot Tea Day, on January 12 every year. Tea has been in our cups since as far back as the 2nd century B.C. Originating in China, tea has grown to become the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water. This delicious blend of spices energizes, detoxifies, relaxes, and does so much more.
History of National Hot Tea Day
Tea has been consumed for almost 5,000 years. In 2737 B.C., during the Tang Dynasty, legend has it that some tea leaves fell into a pot of water that was being boiled for Chinese emperor Shen Nung. He drank the brew and found it delicious and relaxing.
In 2016, the earliest known physical evidence of tea was discovered in the mausoleum of Emperor Jing of Han in Xi’an, indicating that tea, from the genus Camellia, was drunk by Han dynasty emperors, as early as the 2nd century B.C. The Han dynasty work, “the Contract for a Youth,” written in 59 B.C., contains the first known reference to boiling tea. The first record of tea cultivation is also dated to this period, during which tea was cultivated on Meng Mountain.
Tea was first introduced to Western priests and merchants in China during the 16th century. The first recorded shipment of tea by a European nation was in 1607, when the Dutch East India Company moved a cargo of tea from Macao to Java. Tea was sold in a coffee house in London in 1657, Samuel Pepys tasted tea in 1660, and Catherine of Braganza took the tea-drinking habit to the English court when she married Charles II in 1662.
Tea smuggling during the 18th century made tea accessible to the public. The British government removed the tax on tea, thereby eliminating the smuggling trade, in 1785. The popularity of tea played a role in historical events — the Tea Act of 1773 provoked the Boston Tea Party that escalated into the American Revolution. By the late 19th century, tea had become an everyday beverage for every social society.
The Tea Council of the U.S.A. was founded in 1950, and National Hot Tea Day was created by the council in 2016.

"COMPEL USE OF ABATTOIR," Ottawa Citizen. August 10, 1912. Page 13. --- New Health Act Places City in Position.
The one objection to the establishment of a civic abattoir in Ottawa has been removed by the new regulations of the provincial board of health, which have just been announced. It is now likely that definite steps will be quickly taken towards the establishment in the city of an abattoir with a view to ensuring a better supply of meat and regulating the price.
The matter has been before the city council on several occasions and the city has gone so far as to acquire land adjacent to the incinerator site, which would be an ideal location for an abattoir and cattle yard, lying as it does close to the railways and the Rideau river. Then the question was referred to Con. Parent and Dr. Shirreff, medical health officer. The latter, while he has strongly advocated a civic abattoir, said it would be useless to establish one unless the city had authority to compel people to slaughter their animals there. The city did not have that power and so nothing was done for the time being. The new regulations of the province provide that where a municipality has established a public slaughter house it may pass bylaws requiring that no carcass or meat shall be offered for sale in the municipality unless it bears the stamp of the local or Dominion or provincial inspector.
"This removes the one objection there was to the establishment of a civic abattoir," said Dr. Shirreff to The Citizen when shown the new regulations. He says he will again urge the city to establish one.
BUTCHERS WELCOME IT. With regard to the regulation as to the inspection and stamping of meat in cities where civic abattoirs exist. there is no doubt that Ottawa when it gets its abattoir will take advantage of the act and that the butchers of this city will welcome it.
Mr. B. Slattery said to The Citizen: "This is exactly what we want, and a civic abattoir without such a regulation would be worse than useless. The whole object of an abattoir would be that only inspected and approved meat could be sold in Ottawa."
Another authority on the question doubted whether there would be a single butcher in the city who would object to the regulation. "It is a pity," he told The Citizen, "that Ontario has not gone further and decreed. that every city of a certain size must necessarily have its abattoir. At any rate, if Ottawa gets an abattoir it must certainly have a regulation that all meat sold in the city be stamped by inspectors for the civic authorities."
