Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Earl Cooper
A top-flight engineer for Global Motors, Earl Cooper, quit the company in protest when the Board of Directors refused to listen to his warnings about serious safety defects in their hot new sports car. Afraid that he would expose their callousness to the press, the executives sent assassins after Earl. Batman intervened and saved his life.
Cooper testified and Global Motors ended up shuttered. He had done the right thing, but ended up blacklisted as a whistle-blower, leaving Cooper all but unemployable in the auto industry. Batman sought out Cooper and offered him both a job as well as a challenge. The car Batman had been using as the Batmobile was not cutting it and Batman asked Cooper to design and build a new one.
Using dummy corporations, Wayne Enterprises funded Cooper’s garage and all materials he might need. He worked alongside his daughter, Marva, who was a brilliant mechanic in her own right. Batman was very happy with the end result. Cooper and his daughter maintained the garage for regular jobs, with a secret basement level for doing repairs on the Batmobile.
At one point The Penguin learned the identity of Batman’s mechanic and took Marva hostage, forcing Cooper to sabotage the Batmobile. Using his wits, Cooper was able to relay his predicament to Batman with some sly shop-talk. As such, Batman and Robin were able to save Marva and the Penguin and his men were sent to jail. In the aftermath, Batman set Cooper and his daughter with a new shop in a more secretive location.
The indomitable Paul Winfield provided the voice for Earl Cooper with he engineer extraordinaire appearing in the forty-eighth episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘The Mechanic.’

I'm a prosecutor. I'm part of the business of accusing, judging and punishing. I explore the evidence of a crime and determine who is charged, who is brought to this room to be tried before his peers. I present my evidence to the jury and they deliberate upon it. They must determine what really happened. If they cannot, we will not know whether the accused deserves to be freed or should be punished. If they cannot find the truth, what is our hope of justice?
Presumed Innocent, Alan J. Pakula (1990)
