I haven't really been a fan in a while, but hearing Zeltik say that for the film, Ganondorf should be "a deranged, monstrous warlord who wants power, and nothing else" genuinely enraged me. I need to know what the fuck would make someone think that is the best thing to do with him. I know it's what they will do—I have zero hope of nuance, or even a motivation for him—but just. God, even the Zelda manga understood what to do with him! Why do you hate depth? What is wrong with you?

I am going to be very straightforward here: making him do what he does just because he's "mad" not only makes for an uninteresting villain, it also falls neatly in to a myriad of disgusting orientalist tropes that you can't avoid responsibility for just by giving him green skin. He is the only male representative of the Gerudo we ever see, and while the games will sometimes allow them to be the "good guys" (so long as they're assimilating into Hylian culture, or working in its interest), what Nintendo created in Ganondorf and his backstory was the equivalent of one of those slave market or sexy harem paintings of the late 19th century. He's the evil-for-evil's-sake depraved and decadent man in possession of unlimited numbers of scantily clad women, and that is, beyond a doubt, an orientalist notion. But he doesn't fucking have to be.

Frankly, up until Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo was getting better about him. I still think Akira Himekawa did him best, but Wind Waker Ganondorf is beloved because of his contradictions. He's undertaking actions we would consider evil for an ultimately fruitless cause, but he's not "deranged," he's consumed by the (literal) sunk cost fallacy, unwilling to give up on a dream he's already lost. Even in Ocarina of Time, he's the product of Hyrule's own making. The King of Hyrule is the one who launched a civil war, Hyrule is the nation with hidden torture chambers and guillotines. The Gerudo weren't even thieves before the war; Nabooru is anti-Hyrule, she disagrees with him on method.

Anyway, yeah. I keep forgetting what a cesspool the fandom is out in the wild. But for the love of God, I need people to start handling this man with some care.

being a singlet who is very supportive of systems and has been for a long time makes some experiences really wild because like. ok so i experienced semi good rep of DID when i was very young. i read a brand new story by one of my favorite authors about a character with DID. the story started with the author saying it was likely not perfect representation and it's very important to listen to people with DID and not let his story overtake theirs. i had asked my mom about it and she said this was a real thing people experienced, but it probably wasn't super accurate in the story because the guy writing it didn't have DID. this was my first experience with DID. my takeaway from it was "oh that's neat! sometimes one person is actually lots of people and that's normal!" and then i moved on.

so like. genuinely growing up and realizing the world is super weird about people with DID was like a brick in the face ALIUSDHALSIUDh what do you mean. what do you mean you think these people are weird. i thought we all agreed they were normal. and i STILL experience that even now knowing more than i did before, i may have only had 1 experience with DID as a kid but that was enough to completely normalize it for me, i don't know how you can't just be normal about systems they are literally just sitting there we all know this (<- we apparently don't all know this)

#something to be said about how even flawed attempts at representation can do good #i don't think the story ever got finished but the one short snippet i had that was done in a respectful light #that was all it took for me. that was it #looking back on it it really wasn't an accurate depiction of DID. not at all. but it was kind #and my mom (who as far as i know doesn't have any kind of personal experience with DID) also told me to be kind #and both of them told me systems were very normal and we should listen and be kind to them #and it was enough that the thought of being unkind was so fucking foreign to teenage me actually learning more about DID and meeting people #who have DID that i was surprised by it #to any systems reading this i know i'm not the only person who was taught to be kind to you #there's space out there for you and people who very earnestly try even if they get it wrong sometimes #people like this author who clearly did the best research he could at the time #and people like my mom who didn't really know a lot but still thought it was important to introduce me to it so i knew to be kind #peace and love and all that

In my short time in the Star Trek fandom, I have discovered one thing that absolutely rankles me, and that’s just the weird kind of hostility towards certain ships/shippers. Like I’ll see posts that are like “ugh x shippers are so annoying and cringe unlike us superior y shippers” and it’s just??? Why so mean?? We’re all just obsessed about silly little fictional characters, none of it matters anyway. Why can’t we just have fun and be nice to each other??
