Rewire, day 1

Started the evening with HTRK, who were lovely and highly atmospheric, which was kind of funny because the music before they started sounded more like the crowd needed to get warmed up for Arca or Tzusing. Oh well, HTRK mostly played newer stuff off Rhinestones, but did dip back into the years with Poison and Body Lotion.

From there on, I meandered a bit, but nothing got my ear. CS + Kreme were alright, Coby Sey brought high energy at the start and then poured it into fragility (Onus being a bit of mover), so I went to check out Rainey Miller…

Dedicating a paragraph to his act. Now if I was in a vile mood, I’d describe him as a forgotten Soundcloud rapper with Burial-esque beats, who was either having a meltdown or simulating one. Throughout the performance, there was a lot of panting and going into the crowd, talking to a wall, hanging over the railing of a small staircase, crawling through the room, almost leaving it and surprising the nearest security guard before he turned back. (I guess you don’t expect an artist to leave the stage, that’s like where other people are). Anyway, he did it all and I watched it all like a background character in an arthouse movie.

I took a breather and stayed at the venue. Soon Fever Ray and Zoë Mc Pherson would perform at the same time. If possible, I wanted to see them both, but one look upon the queue to Fever Ray and I reasoned it wasn’t worth the wait. So, I went in the room where Zoë Mc Pherson was sound checking… This took a bit, but when all (or most) problems were fixed, they began with Alessandra Leone to deliver a great performance, playing their most recent album Pitch Blender in a high octane set.

After Mc Pherson/Leone, I called it a night. There were too many calm or odd acts in between my 2 highlights, but I might just be losing my interest for some of this stuff. It isn’t my first festival, but maybe it could be my last. Taste changes over time, it'd make sense. And of course I realize I'm privileged to be able to go and see these artists.
