Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5
Bad Witch
Summary: Emily Junk doesn't want to be a bad witch anymore and is trying her best to become a witch the Barden Bellas could be proud of. Only her spells always seem to blow up in her face and cause more destruction than anything else.
A/N: This is a sort of continuation/follow-up to my Pitch Perfect Horror Week 2020 submission for the prompt "Unusual Familiars."
"No," Beca told Emily. "My car insurance has skyrocketed since the last time you wanted me to help you with a spell. Do you remember how that went? It was two years ago, but I can remember it like it was yesterday."
"I'm sorry, Beca," Emily said. "I did learn my lesson after that unfortunate misstep, and I've been practicing."
"I know you have, but still," Beca said with a faraway look on her face as the memory of that day came to her mind.
Beca had agreed to help Emily, their newest witch, with a spell. They gathered all the potions Emily would need and drove to an empty field. Beca thought it was a good idea to have Emily practice in an empty, wide-open field to avoid damaging their house or their neighbor's houses.
"Okay," Beca said as they got out of her car. "We'll set everything up on the table, and you can make up the potion. Once it's done, you can recite your incantation, and we'll see how things go."
"This is so exciting," Emily squealed. "My first solo spell. Thanks for helping me."
"You're welcome," Beca said. "Help me get everything out of the trunk."
It only took a few minutes to get everything set up.
"Do you have the recipe for your spell?" Beca asked.
"Yeah," Emily said, holding up a piece of paper. "It's right here."
"Good," Beca said. "Get to it. I'll be right here if you need me."
"Oh, um, okay," Emily said, looking down at her 'recipe.' "One eye of newt; one drop of bat's blood. . ."
Emily dropped each ingredient into the bowl as she named them.
"Last but not least, one lizard's foot," Emily said with flair as she dropped it into the bowl.
Beca looked on as Emily worked. She furrowed her brows when Emily said 'lizard's foot.'
"Now for my incantation," Emily said and started reading from a card she pulled out of her pocket.
"Emily, wait!" Beca cried out just before her car blew up.
"Oh, my stars," Emily said as parts of Beca's parts suddenly rained down around them. "What did I do wrong."
Beca sighed as she said, "The lizard's foot is only used when you want to blow something up,".
"Oh," Emily said, her brow furrowed as she looked at her notes. "I thought it seemed weird when I was writing it down."
"It's not all your fault; I should have checked everything before telling you to go ahead," Beca said, sighing as she pulled out her phone. "I'm calling Chloe to come get us."
"It took me weeks to get my insurance payment," Beca said. "And, do you remember what happened after that? You shrunk yourself. Thank God Jessica, and Chloe knew what to do, or I'd be carrying you around in my pocket."
"Please, Beca," Emily whined. "I'm such a bad witch. I mean, I'm getting better, but I still need some help."
"You mean Chloe still won't let you do spells without someone watching over you?" Beca said, chuckling when Emily nodded. "Why don't you ask Chloe for help? I'm sure she'd be happy to help. Plus, she's a great teacher."
~~ Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5 ~~
Two hours later, Chloe was in the attic, helping Emily with a spell, when they heard Beca yelling.
"Don't do anything until I get back," Chloe told Emily.
Chloe went running downstairs to her and Beca's room to find Beca staring down at Fat Amy.
"I don't care whose familiar you are," Beca said. "I swear I will turn you into bacon!"
Chloe sighed as they watched Fat Amy scamper out of their room.
"You need to find something else to scare Fat Amy with, babe," Chloe admonished. "Everyone, including Fat Amy, knows your threat is meaningless."
"I know," Beca said, tossing the shredded shirt she had been holding onto the bed.
"She got your favorite shirt?" Chloe asked, picking the shirt up.
"Yeah," Beca said. "I sat my laundry basket down for two minutes while I got a drink, and she got into it. I swear Ashley needs to see if she can get a different familiar. That pig is twice as big as she was when she first showed up and eats her weight in food every day. And that doesn't include all the clothing she's feasted on."
"We don't have time to worry about that," Chloe said, tossing Beca's now-repaired shirt back onto the bed. "I need to get back to Emily before she blows something up."
"Wait! Did you just use magic to fix my shirt?" Beca asked, pointing to the shirt. "I thought you didn't like for us to use magic to fix things like that."
"I don't," Chloe said. "But I know how much you love that shirt, and I love you, so it was a no-brainer."
Beca smirked and pulled Chloe into a kiss. They jumped apart when an explosion sounded throughout the house.
"I really hope that wasn't Emily," Chloe said, sighing heavily. "I told her to wait for me before she did anything."
Beca followed Chloe upstairs to the attic. Beca held back a laugh when she saw Emily with black soot all over her face and waving away the smoke cloud that surrounded her.
"I think I used a tad too much eye of newt," Emily said, coughing through the smoke.
"Emily," Chloe said, sighing again. "I told you to wait until I got back."
"I know," Emily said. "I didn't think it would matter if I only added one thing."
A car alarm started blaring outside. Beca's eyes widened. She ran downstairs to the front door. She threw open the door and rushed out to the porch, stopping to look in the driveway. She breathed a sigh of relief, and then she made her way back inside and up to the attic.
"It's okay," Beca said, wearing a relieved smile. "It wasn't my car."
~~ Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5 ~~
Later that night, Chloe asked Ashley and Jessica to meet in her and Beca's room to talk.
"What's going on, Chloe?" Jessica asked.
"I wanted to talk to everyone about Emily," Chloe said.
"Is she okay?" Ashley asked.
"Oh, she's fine," Chloe said. "I'm just worried about her. She thinks she's a bad witch, and I want to think of some way to boost her confidence, so she'll see she's actually a good witch."
"Good luck with that," Beca snorted.
"Beca!" Chloe admonished. "She needs our help."
"What can we do?" Jessica asked.
"I, um, I don't really know," Chloe said.
"Maybe we can have her do some spells we've already done," Ashley suggested. "Ones we know work. That way, when she does them, and they work, she'll gain more confidence to try some of her own."
"That sounds like a good idea," Chloe said. "She'll probably balk at doing basic spells. But I think we need to start from scratch and get her comfortable with small stuff before we let her graduate to the bigger spells."
"You're right," Beca said. "I have a couple of basic spells she can try."
"We all have some basic spells she can try," Jessica said. "When do we start?"
"First thing tomorrow," Chloe said. "I'll talk to Emily and help her with a couple of the basics. Then we can move onto some that are slightly more difficult."
Beca started chewing on her lip; Chloe knew this meant Beca was seriously thinking about something.
"Something on your mind, Beca?"
"Yeah," Beca said, looking at Chloe. "I was thinking, shouldn't we figure out what her specialty is? I mean, what if potions and spells aren't really her thing like it's Jessica's? Maybe she can freeze time like I can; or throw fireballs and energy spheres like Ashley. Or, here's a wild thought. Maybe she can do it all like you can."
The three other witches stared at Beca.
"What?"
"You're right," Chloe said. "We can start with mixing potions and casting spells. But, until we know what her specialty is, we can't help her be the good witch we know she can be."
"Yeah," Jessica said, grinning. "Although I think we can rule out potions and spells as her specialty."
"She should still learn them," Beca said. "After she gets a few of the basics down, I'll take the first crack at her and see if she can stop time like I can. She may not know she has that ability. I mean, I didn't know I did until I was frightened half out of my wits by a demon. Who knows what she's capable of without some help along the way? And when we do find out what her specialty is, we can have a graduation ceremony and give her a diploma or something."
"That's a great idea, babe," Chloe said, kissing Beca's cheek. "I think she'll be more receptive if she knows there will be a ceremony to highlight her accomplishments. We'll take turns working with her and see how things go."
"We're with you," Ashley and Jessica said.
"Great," Chloe said, smiling at the three girls. "We'll start first thing tomorrow with Jessica."
~~ Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5 ~~
After six months and many trips to the store to replace furniture, Chloe decided it was time to have a meeting to discuss Emily's progress or lack thereof. Tonight Emily had plans to meet with a friend and left immediately following dinner.
Chloe gathered the girls in the living room so they could talk.
"So, I'm going to work with Emily starting tomorrow," Chloe said, looking at the girls as she paced back and forth. "And, I'm thinking I should take her to a field on the outskirts of town, so there is less opportunity for her to destroy anything. I don't think we can afford to keep replacing lamps and furniture."
"Um," Beca said, drawing Chloe's attention to her. "Do I need to remind you I already tried that, and she blew up my car?"
Chloe sighed, stopped pacing, and dropped her arms to her sides. "We have to do something. I can't stand to see the look of disappointment on her face when her magic doesn't work the way it's supposed to."
"I have an idea," Ashley said. "What if while one of us is teaching Emily, the other three hide out of sight and do the actual magic? She'll think she did it and will gain the confidence we hope she'd gain, and then she'll be able to do magic herself."
"That's just crazy enough to work," Jessica said, kissing Ashley on the cheek. "Good idea, babe."
"I don't know," Beca said, crossing her arms and frowning. "I'll do it; I just hope it doesn't blow up in our faces. Literally."
~~ Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5 ~~
Ashley's idea worked for a short time. Emily did gain some confidence working with Jessica and was able to control herself while performing small spells with potions.
Ashely came next and tried to teach Emily how to throw fireballs and energy spheres. Beca and Chloe tried to direct the energy spheres to the object Emily was aiming for but failed more often than they were successful.
At one point, a fireball barely missed Beca; after that, she was out and left to work on some music to calm herself down.
Chloe spent a lot of time and energy helping, but even she had to stop Emily after a misguided energy ball threw Jessica against the wall.
"Stop, Em," Chloe said before stepping out from behind the wall she had been "hiding" behind. "This isn't working. It's obvious that fireballs and energy spheres are not your thing. Let's try something else. Beca will start working with you tomorrow to see if you can stop time. Okay?"
"Okay," Emily said sadly. "I'm really sorry about throwing you against the wall, Jessica."
"It's okay, Em," Jessica said, holding her wrist.
"Come here, Jess," Chloe said. "I'll use a healing spell on that for you."
"Can I help?" Emily asked.
"NO!" both Chloe and Ashley yell.
"I mean, you should probably save up your energy for tomorrow," Chloe said softly. "I got this, okay?"
"Okay," Emily said and left the room.
"That could have gone better," Ashley said. "It's now up to you and Beca to figure out what her specialty is."
"I know," Chloe said as she held Jessica's wrist between her hands. "I'm worried because she's so vulnerable now. I don't want her to give up. Remember, Denise? She wasn't very good at much with regard to magic and gave up. The dark side got to her, and now she's a Dark Witch. They don't care how badly they screw things up or what they destroy. Being a bad witch is a plus to them."
"The dark side will eat someone like Emily alive. It's sad to even think about," Jessica said, moving her hand around and smiling. "It feels as good as new. Thanks, Chloe."
"You're welcome," Chloe said. "I'm going to go talk to Beca and see if we can come up with a plan for tomorrow."
~~ Pitch Perfect SpookFest 2022 - Day 5 ~~
The next morning, Beca stirred when Chloe moved out of her arms.
"What time is it?" Beca mumbled.
"It's just past seven," Chloe replied as she gathered her things for the shower.
"I need to get up," Beca said, stretching and yawning. "I promise Emily we'd start early on her lessons."
"Do you want to shower first?" Chloe asked.
"We could shower together," Beca suggested, waggling her eyebrows.
Chloe chuckled. "I like the way you think."
Beca was all smiles as she jumped up and gathered what she needed.
"Ready?" Chloe asked.
"So ready," Beca replied, grabbing Chloe's hand and dragging her out of their room.
After their shower, Beca and Chloe got dressed and parted ways. Beca went to Emily's room; Chloe went to the kitchen.
"Em?" Beca said, knocking lightly on the bedroom door. When there was no response, Beca knocked again, calling out, "Em, it's time to wake up so we can get started."
When there was still no answer, Beca mumbled, "That's weird."
Beca stood with her hands on her hips, chewing her bottom lip. She put her hand on the doorknob and turned.
"Em, I'm coming in," Beca called out as she opened the door.
As she entered, Beca immediately noticed Emily still lying in bed.
"Come on, Em, time to rise and shine."
There was no response or movement of any kind from Emily.
"Em?!" Beca yelled, running over to the bed.
She shook Emily, calling her name; Emily was unresponsive. Beca ran to the door and yelled,
"Chloe, get up here! Something's wrong with Emily."
Jessica and Ashley heard Beca yelling and rushed out of their room. Chloe came running up the stairs, nearly tripping over Fat Amy, who was running up the stairs as well.
"What's wrong?" Jessica and Ashley asked.
"I don't know," Chloe responded as they ran into Emily's room. "Beca, what's wrong?"
"I don't know," Beca said, sitting on the bed next to Emily. "I came to wake Emily, and she's not responding."
"What?!" Chloe said, running over to the bed. She began shaking Emily and calling her name.
"Chloe, stop," Jessica said. "Look at her. I think she's getting a vision. That's the same way Aubrey and Stacie used to look when they got a vision"
Chloe looked down at Emily and said, "You're right, and it means it hasn't happened yet, or it's about to."
"Who are Aubrey and Stace?" Beca asked.
"They were part of our coven before I met you," Chloe said, teary-eyed. "They were killed when Denise, another member of our coven, went to the dark side. Brey and Stacie tried to protect her, but she turned on them, and the Dark Witches were able to kill them while they were distracted."
"I'm sorry, Chlo," Beca said, pulling Chloe into a hug.
"It's okay," Chloe said. "It's been almost five years. It still hurts, but I know they died trying to save someone, so it's not all bad."
"So, you think Emily is really getting a vision of something that's about to happen?" Beca asked.
Before Chloe could answer, Emily suddenly gasped and sat straight up in bed.
"Em?" Jessica said. "Are you okay?"
"They need our help," Emily exclaimed. "I saw them."
Emily threw back the blankets and started to get out of bed; Chloe stopped her.
"What did you see, Emily?" Chloe asked.
"I saw some witches," Emily said. "I don't know how but it was like I was watching it on TV. Anyway, they were in an alley and they were being chased by another group of witches."
"Can you tell where this was happening?" Beca asked.
"Um," Emily closed her eyes as if trying to see the images again. "It was in an alley behind that Chinese place you like so much."
"Let's go before we're too late," Beca cried, standing and moving toward the door.
"I have to get dressed first," Emily said.
Chloe waved her hand around, and Emily was standing before them, fully clothed.
"Wow!" Emily exclaimed. "That was so cool."
"Come on!" Beca said again, rushing out the door.
Chloe drove and parked her car at the curb in front of the Chinese restaurant. They saw a small group of women suddenly rush into the alley next to the restaurant; another group chased after them.
"Denise," Chloe mumbled, spying the rogue witch leading the attackers.
The girls got out of the car and ran after the other witches. When they rounded the corner, they were met with chaos as the two sides battled it out.
"How do we know who the good witches are?" Beca asked.
"See that dark-haired girl in the front?" Chloe asked, pointing at the woman. At Beca's nod, Chloe said, "That's Denise; she's a bad witch, so attack anyone who is fighting with her."
Beca, Jessica, and Ashley flanked the bad witches and used whatever they could to attack them.
"What should I do?" Emily asked as she watched the attack intensify.
"I want you to be safe, so stay behind me."
Emily nodded and got behind Chloe.
"Watch out!" Emily exclaimed when one of the witches threw an energy sphere their way.
Chloe immediately threw up her hands and deflected the sphere back. The only thing left of the witch was a puff of black smoke.
After a few minutes, the battle was done when the bad witches grabbed their wounded and started running away.
Beca started to chase after them, but Chloe stopped her.
"Let them go," Chloe said. "We'll regroup and get them later."
The good witches came out from where they were shielding themselves. They thanked Chloe and the other girls.
"No thanks, needed," Chloe assured them. "We're just glad we were able to help."
The two groups parted ways, and Chloe drove back to the house.
"When we get home," Chloe said. "I want everyone to change into something nice. We have a graduation ceremony to attend."
"For who?" Emily asked, looking around at the other girls.
"For you, silly," Jessica said. "You've discovered your specialty."
"I did?" Emily asked, confused. "Really?"
"Yes, really!" Beca exclaimed. "You have the ability to see visions of things to come. And your vision helped us save that coven of witches. Being a visionary is a unique specialty. So, congratulations, Emily. You are a good witch."
"Oh, my stars!" Emily exclaimed. "Who else feels like a winner today?"

For some reason i’m unable to comment on your latest chapter, but I couldn’t not say anything because it was SO mind blowing! I’ve read tons of halloween fics but this one is already a game changer. The potential, the implications of what might happen, the subtle but establishing details. Its wonderfully exhilarating 😍
Can't comment? Oh no 😞 I'll look into that and see if it's something I can fix. Thank you for telling me and thank you for this! Being a game changer amongst HALLOWEEN fics is the highest compliment. I love Halloween. And I hope to live up to your hype with the coming chapters!
Thank you again ♡

To the anon who has just sent me SpookFest votes, I love your enthusiasm, but they need to both go through the @pitch-perfect-spookfest blog (it just keeps them in the same place), and they can't be anonymous because otherwise we can't count them, it's not fair as it means we can't ensure that people are only voting once, I'm really sorry!!! Feel free to dm the blog rather than sending an ask, the votes are kept completely anonymous, we won't publish which people have chosen what, it's just to make sure that we can keep things fair 🥰
