pretty much nothing! It was a rough reading week! The first part of the week I was fairly consumed with the D20 I was watching & not reading much. Then I spent FIVE DAYS reading a little over half of a 258K fic before finally accepting that though it was pretty well written and not bad, I just wasn't into it and the thought of fighting thru another 120K was appalling, so I bailed.

BL & Critical Analysis

Pop culture critique & a how to do it... or something

This meaty question came from the lovely @huachengeye Thank you!

Codicil: I do not get paid for pop culture critique (although I once wrote book reviews professionally, long story). So I’m entirely a dilettante.

The Question!

Q1: Can you can shed some light on your process (of critical analysis)

This is a little like training your eye to edit a document (I bet you can tell that's not one my strong points). Or training your mind to look at data and data collection in terms of the results it may yield and what the initial survey says about the questioner's bias (or can bias results).

First, I have to ask...

Do you really want to train your eye to critique?

Because it will become a lot harder to immerse yourself in a piece of media if you constantly feel obligated to step back mentally and think about it from various perspectives.

In other words, you may enjoy BL, or all live action dramas, LESS if you try to think about them critically.

I have an intimate who is a pretty well known writer. She mostly writes humorous fiction. She's open about the fact that this means every time she laughs, she stops and thinks about why that happened and whether is could be used in her prose. She never gets to be fully absorbed by narrative ever anymore because her critical eye is always turned on, especially for the written word.

What you may sacrifice for critique, is a certain level of childish wonder.

I’m not sure i would necessarily advise doing this.

My Process

My process is essentially now visible in this blog. As I watch a show I take a few notes on it (which show up in the weeklies) and then at the end I go through those notes, consolidate, try to be witty about it, and write up a review.

The review usually has something about:

characters, tropes, plot

narrative & story structure & pace

how this BL fits in with the greater BL genre & history

any thoughts I have on the quality of the production, acting, and/or directing

my own personal feelings about the show

Thus my reviews tend to take into account several criteria.

For #1-2 I have a background in lit crit as an undergrad (and, like I said, I did once review books for a living) so these are kinda ingrained in me. I’m working on seeing the influence of soap operas, fan fic, and non-western story structures as critically valid, so these are the things I’m actively learning more about the most these days.

For #3: How does this fit into the history of BL? Since I’ve made it point to watch pretty much all BLs, I feel like I’m set up to think and talk about this. AKA the spreadsheet made me do it. But since I also have anthropology in my academic history, I’m very interested in how a BL represents for its country’s BL oeuvre. I try to judge KBLs against other KBLs (and Kdramas) and look for patterns and trends in how that country’s interpretation of what it “means to be BL” shift over time.

For #4: my IRL job is tangential to the entertainment industry so that’s accidentally trained my eye for film. I don’t know that I like this part about myself, but it’s happened whether I like it or not. And I don’t have a proper background in film critique.

Final #5: will discuss further in a bit.

Suggestion? Establish A Rating System

Come up with your own personal 10 star (or 5 star) rating system.

Write it down. Don’t be afraid to modify or adjust it. It’s yours, your tastes change, nothing is set in stone.

Pick one ideal example BL for each category that you’re very familiar with for your reference point. Then you can ask yourself, after you’ve watched a new one, whether you liked it more, less, or about the same as that show. (relative rating, similar to grading on a curve)

I change my examples regularly as my taste changes and as new BLs are added. The bar gets shifted, so to speak.

My Rating System

Your reasoning for rating a BL will be different from mine, but here’s mine as an example.

(Also I never feel bound by this, sometimes I give a show a 8/10 just because it feels like that’s what it deserves.)

10/10 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - my favorite precious squee!, faithful to tropes, happy ending, good chemistry, few flaws, high rewatch potential, makes me happy, examples: Semantic Error, Until We Meet Again

9/10 ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED - loved it and good rewatch potential but probably a few pacing issues or one big flaw, still made me feel good/comforted, examples: Cherry Magic, Bad Buddy

8/10 - RECOMMENDED - some concerns around tropes (like dub con) or story structure/filming but still satisfies as BL, moved me emotionally, rewatchable in parts or not rewatchable but important, examples: Love By Chance, Between Us

7/10 - RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS - i.e. isn’t quite BL, convoluted, not strictly HEA, too short/long, and/or chemistry issues, may have impact on other BL fans but not me (or on me but not others) examples: Make it Right, KinnPorsche

6/10 - WORTH WATCHING BUT FLAWED - probably around the ending or in narrative structure/cohesion or censorship, disappointed expectations, unlikely to rewatch, examples: My Gear and Your Gown, Love Mechanics

5/10 - WATCH IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO - but don’t expect much, it’s a total hot mess interesting only because it's BL and I'm probubly pretty conflicted about it, examples: Advance Bravely, Even Sun

4/10 - FATALLY FLAWED - but still basically BL, however... do we want to support this kind of behaviour? examples: Precise Shot, Work from Heart

3/10 - I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM WATCHING AND NEITHER DOES IT, just seriously why did this get made? examples: Blue of Winter, Physical Therapy

2/10 - IT'S DEPRESSING - they killed/tortured/etc the gay, save yourself, examples: The Effect, HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count

1/10 - IT'S AWFUL, I WATCHED IT SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO, has all the flaws of 4-3 plus something even more egregious, personally triggering, example: My Bromance series, Round Trip to Love

dnf - self explanatory, but usually I drop because I feel like the narrative is already a #3 and/or headed for a #2 or #1 and then I’m told later that is went there, example: My Tempo

I hand out the fewest 1s & 10s. The most 8s and 7s. Everything else is pretty much on the bell curve you’d expect.

Q2: What resources do you use to build your reviews?

I listen to a lot of pop culture review critiques in podcast form, often about stuff I'd never watch. But I like the way professionals talk about these things, even if they aren't MY things or don't jive with my personal opinions.

Mark Kermode is my favorite film critic and we like the opposite stuff, but the way he talks about film is very interesting to me. His podcast mini series on the "business of film" is probably one of my must listens. For his main podcast (Kermode & May’s Take), I always skip over all the interviews, people talking about their own films bore me to death (especially if they are actors on the promo junket, save me please). His rants are some of my favorites of all time (try Pirates 3 or Iron Man 2). Someone else’s list.

I also like Pop Culture Happy Hour from NPR because it brings in multiple perspectives and varied cast of critics who often disagree and the "things making me happy" is a grab bag of fun.

The Bechdel Cast is a feminist critique podcast from Hollywood insiders and they do recaps as well as critique, and it's always fascinating to me to hear what people latch onto in a narrative. However, I only listen if I am already familiar with the film they are discussing.

My background is in anthropology and I've lived all over the world so that helps train me to think in terms on culture's impact on narrative as well as linguistics and so forth. As a personality I’m also quite reserved and deadpan, grumpy, stiff, strict, and kinda cold. I think I gravitate to being an observer and an outsider which helps if you want to analysis stuff. Which is not a claim to objectivity, I don't think there can be objective analysis of pop culture.

But it does make me pause to think, "that made me FEEEL something" why? What am I feeling? How did the actor do that? The script? The direction?

These shows are meant to entertain, whether they are successful or not, for me (and what "successful entertainment" means to me) and how they are doing it is the first question I always ask myself.

Q3: What are the things you look out for when watching a BL?

I ask myself a lot of things I would when looking at any piece of art. Or even when shopping for clothing or a new car or reading a book.

Did I like it? Why did I like it?

Did it move me? Why did it move me?

Did I react? How did I react? To which bits? Why?

What tropes and narrative beats was it using to manipulate me and my expectations? Did it meet those expectations? The promises it set up at the start? Did it fulfill the watcher-contract during the course of the narrative?

Did the filming successfully telegraphy the journey I was meant to take? Did the actors?

But also... would I rewatch it? Am I tempted to do so the moment it ends? For which bits?

The statistician in me wants to point out that these questions say a lot more about me and my relationship to art than it does about the art itself.

For example

Did I like it? Means... I'm motivated by pure taste and personal preference and complete subjectivity. This is in part formed by a person's background, life state, whole experience with culture and pop culture and society, family, friends. Taste is also just "that" bit. You know, that bit? Likes lemon deserts over chocolate ones, gravities to spicy food, favorite color is green, decorates with potted plants. Just my taste is my taste. I like what I like.

Yes I have some criteria that subconsciously come into play: I look for clever story structure, subversion or manipulation of tropes, parody, not hitting any of my dislikes (like dub con). But also I have other biases impacting whether I like it (like physical appearance) which I can try to check but usually can't fix. (For example GMMTV's Gawin/Fluke looks so much like an ex of mine I really struggle with his screen presence.)

Did I like it?

The fact that this is the first question I ask myself also should tell you I'm motivated by the emotion these narratives engender. I want them to transport me and move me. I my case I want to feel comforted and satisfied and happy. The ones the make me feel discomfort, especially for too long in the narrative, I am simply going to like less. Sometimes less than I feel like I should (see my struggles with masterworks like ITSAY, YNEH, or The 8th Sense). The very BLs that most professional critics would tout as the best examples of the genre for a wider audience often turn out to be the ones I struggle with the most. (They are also, fortunately for me, the least representative of the bulk of the genre.)

In other words there is ALSO a part of me that genuinely likes and enjoys the trashy stuff. Even the trash I trash watch.

So I would advise you to come up with your own questions. Ask yourself what you want from these shows when you watch them.

What motivates you?

Why are you watching them at all?

What brings you joy from an art or entertainment experience?

What do you want them to do for you? To you?

You are going to experience them (and therefore analyze them) from this perspective whether you like it or not. So understand yourself is paramount. It's about your relationship to the art, not the art itself.

If I were to give you an assignment I would say start with one BL you really enjoyed, perhaps not your favorite but one level down. And then do one you really did not enjoy. And think about why...

Taylor & Travis Timeline

October 2023 - part 1

October 1 - Travis is seen leaving Taylor's NYC apartment around 11am. Travis heads back to his hotel where the team is staying before his Chiefs vs Jets Game at MetLife Stadium

Taylor attends the Chiefs vs Jets game at MetLife Stadium, NJ, with Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, Donna Kelce, Sophie Turner, Sabrina Carpenter, Brittany Mahomes, Melanie Nyema, Austin Swift & girlfriend Sydney Ness, Ashley Avignone, Robyn Lively, and more. The camera cut to Taylor approx. 17 times during the game and the Eras Tour film trailer played twice during ad breaks. Taylor was seen hugging Donna, saying "you're amazing, I don't know how you do it" when the score was 20-20. Taylor was also seen mimicking Travis. The NFL change their tiktok and twitter pages again to reference Taylor's attendance. Various media outlets post footage of Taylor at the game, Travis likes a post of Taylor's reaction to a Chiefs touchdown. The Chiefs won 23-20.

October 5 - It's Travis' birthday today! He turns 34.

Donna Kelce makes an appearance on the 'Got it From My Momma' podcast. When asked what her favourite Taylor Swift song is, she responds (x)

"I think probably 'Shake It Off' -- we're getting a lot of that lately, about haters," Donna said with a laugh.

When asked if she's surprised about the infatuation surrounding Taylor and Travis' relationship

"I feel like I'm in an alternate universe because it's something that I've never been involved with ever before," Donna said.

The NFL release a statement in response to the New Heights podcast episode discussing the NFL "overdoing" coverage of Taylor at the Chiefs games, saying (x)

"The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we've leaned into in real time, as it's an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we've seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport."

October 6 - Travis speaks at a press conference. When asked about how he is adjusting to public interest in his relationship with Taylor, he says (x)

October 6 - Taylor reportedly flew to Kansas City "to see Travis" for his birthday to have a "chill night" (x). A sneaky little visit for Trav's birthday.

October 7 - Taylor leaves Kansas City.

Travis flies into Minnesota for the Chiefs vs Vikings game

October 8 - Travis plays in the Chiefs vs Vikings game in Minnesota. Travis injures his ankle during the game but after an x-ray he returns to the field and scores a touchdown. The Chiefs win 27-20 (x) (x) (x)

There’s a culture critic named Anne Helen Petersen who studies pop culture. She literally discussed why everyone’s obsessed with Travis and Taylor on her podcast this week (Culture Study Podcast) and they do bring up the traditional dating norms in heterosexual relationships and you’re totally right.

They also kinda touched on Taylor being 34 and not married and what that means about all of this which I thought was interesting. I’m still listening to the podcast (it’s over an hour long lol)

but Taylor having such a feminine job (popstar!!) with Travis being a legit football player is definitely factoring in. It’s like the beckhams

fjdaskl it's so fun that you are explaining ahp to me because i am like her #1 stan i feel. i love her. and yes, i do think she had some good insights into the relationship, but she hasn't gone quite deep enough but i expect the podcast - and future studies - will go further into it. i think she's extremely insightful about these types of things and how they reflect the current culture.

agree that there is a lot of layers to their gender roles coming in: their physical appearances, their jobs, what they represent as icons/what their "roles" are according to society (taylor being like... uber-girl, travis being an uber-boy, in a very all-american high school prom king and queen way), the archetypes, and so on.

i think a lot about how some reporter pointed out - talking about lavender haze, i believe - that many people view women as girls until they get married and have kids. and taylor, being legally single and child-free, challenges that belief regularly because she is so powerful, so successful, and so honest about her life.

like, i do think it's kind of awesome to see a 34-year-old woman be single and child-free while thriving. we don't see that enough and it has real consequences for people. expecting women to only be happy with a man and child puts pressure on them to find a partner, stick with a shitty relationship, not be their full authentic selves on their own, not make their own money, etc. - and it also makes the fact that women are underpaid, vulnerable to financial and other kinds of abuse, etc. less pressing to society because, frankly, those things benefit men and their power retention.

Castiel: Welcome to I Don’t Get that Reference, a pop culture podcast that analyzes beloved movies, television shows, and the occasional meme that I have never heard of before. On today’s third annual Halloween crossover episode –

Dean: Fuck, don’t hype it up too much; it’s just me. Shit, can I swear?

Castiel: – episode my guest is, once again, Dean Winchester. Dean is the host of American Nightmare, a podcast that looks at a different urban legend every week.

Dean: Cas?

Castiel: [Sigh] Yes. Like you ask every year, you can swear on this podcast.

Dean: Fuck yeah.

Castiel: Dean, do you have anything else to add to your introduction?

Dean: Nope, you covered it. My brother is a true crime freak, and I love horror movies, so we figured urban legends would be a happy medium.

Castiel: Do you have a favorite episode to promote, for people who have never listened to your show before?

Dean: Uh… oh, right! Our Killer Clowns episode. Sam nearly shits himself halfway through ’cause he’s scared of ’em.

Castiel: It’s a pretty common fear, to be fair.

Dean: Yeah, but most people can watch a Ronald McDonald commercial without hiding behind the couch.

Castiel: But he is very… humanoid for a fast food mascot. During my Star Wars series with Charlie Bradbury, we discussed the uncanny valley phenomenon, and I’d say it applies here. I can see how Ronald McDonald would be alarming to any child.

Dean: By “child”, are you including 17-year-old juniors in high school?

Castiel: … no.

Dean: [laughs] Yeah, so in that episode we talk about John Wayne Gacy, Poltergeist, and Plucky Pennywhistle, of course.

Castiel: I have heard of John Wayne Gacy.

Dean: Alright, that’s just tragic. You listen to me, we’re gonna do a Halloween lightning round next year: Nightmare on Elm Street, Saw, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... shit, it won’t be a proper education without Hell Hazers, I, II and III and All Saints’ Day. You’ve gotta see All Saints’ Day and my favorite, All Saints’ Day 4: Hatchet Man Live, plus Hatchet Man V: The Search for David Yaeger since it's so fucking weird.

Castiel: That seems like a lot of content to cover for one episode.

Dean: You have a lot of catching up to do.

Castiel: That’s why I have this podcast.

Dean: We could do a two-parter?

Castiel: I think you’re vastly overestimating my interest in horror movies. If it wasn’t for people’s inexplicable obsession with Halloween, I wouldn’t watch them at all.

Dean: Aw, are you scared?

Castiel: No.

Dean: I think you are!

Castiel: I simply refuse to let you bait me into watching a dozen hours of fake blood sprays and jump scares.

Dean: C’mon, you know it’s more than that. Don’t make me bust out my horror movie conspiracy theories.

Castiel: Dean –

Dean: You asked for it!

Castiel: [indistinguishable muttering]

Dean: Horror movies are all about economic anxiety. I got the idea from Sammy, but here’s the gist: the classic horror movie protagonists are all white middle class kids or grown-ups. The movies are set in their “safe spaces”, like summer camps or suburbia –

Castiel: Like in When a Stranger Calls and The Sixth Sense.

Dean: Exactly! [pause] Hell, you watched The Sixth Sense without me?

Castiel: I watch most movies without you, Dean.

Dean: Dude… that’s cold.

Castiel: It’s a plain fact. You talk too much. I’m there to watch the movie and not listen to your commentary, especially when we have a podcast to discuss it later.

Dean: Ouch.

Castiel: But, I’m more than happy to watch a movie for the second time with you! I already know what happens, so I’m less worried about missing crucial plot points.

Dean: I guess that’s fair.

Castiel: Good. I hope you’re not offended?

Dean: [pause] A little. Y’know how you can make it up to me, though?

Castiel: Oh no.

Dean: A horror movie marathon!

Castiel: I can’t believe you just did that.

Dean: Better believe it, sweetheart.

Castiel: [a long pause] Will you talk over the scary parts?

Dean: For you? Of course.

I've similarly been putting many of these off, so thanks for the insights and encouragement! I'm really curious about these parasocial critic friends though. Who are some of your favourites to follow?

Oh man, my close personal friends! Many of them responded to The Fabelmans and Aftersun so similarly to me, while also some others really did not!! But maybe the true ~magic of the movies~ was the different ways they affected us all along.

Here are some of my folks and where you can find them:

Richard Lawson, Chief Critic at Vanity Fair His reviews are on VF.com, and he's one of the co-hosts of the 'Little Gold Men' podcast, one of my stalwarts. Next week I believe they will be doing my FAVORITE episode of the year, the one right after the Oscars where Joe Reid (stay tuned) comes on with his spreadsheet of what's coming out this year and, sight unseen, they have to make their wild guess of what's gonna win Best Picture. Do they replay their predictions from the year before too? Oh you bet. A riot. I'll add the link once it drops.

David Sims and Griffin Newman, co-hosts of the 'Blank Check' podcast David is a film critic at The Atlantic, Griffin is an actor and comedian, and 'Blank Check' is their podcast where they cover directors' filmographies, in...depth. These episodes are long as hell. You know you're lost in the sauce when you realize that's become a feature not a bug. I have an intro episode! It's the start of their Bob Fosse miniseries from last summer, on his first movie musical, Sweet Charity (1969). I mean first of all you should absolutely watch Sweet Charity, dazzling and a hoot, but even if you don't see it first, this episode is so great. A lot of it is from their dossier on Bob Fosse (the Fossier), as the introduction of this series, so it's a lot of fascinating history and context of both Broadway and Hollywood at the time, but also they're just all in a particularly bouncy mood and it's a treat to listen to. Ben Hosley, their weird little sound guy of a producer, is basically discovering in real time that maybe he loves musicals?? It is so fun. Anyway. Lots of running bits, sure, lots of guests also (hi Richard!), LOTS of hours, but I just vibe so much with the way these two love movies.

Joe Reid and Chris Feil, co-hosts of the 'This Had Oscar Buzz' podcast Let's just stay on the podcast train for a stop longer. Joe and Chris are both Oscar historians and freelance critics, popping up on places like Vanity Fair and Vulture. Their podcast has the pretty brilliant premise of covering movies that once had dreams of Academy Award nominations, but it all went wrong. Their appreciable cattiness is perfectly suited for this. They also have really good film festival recap episodes, for the current year. Edit: Ahh I forgot my intro episode! It is this one from February on Magic Mike XXL, a film I have not seen, with special guest, their friend Pamela Ribbon, the reason we got this moment, and every moment in this episode where I almost crashed into something laughing.

Emily St. James, of, sigh, I guess just Twitter right now Emily was recently laid off from her job as a cultural critic on Vox, in the on-going horrors of the media job landscape. I'm sure she'll be somewhere else soon, and can't wait. I've actually followed her longer than anyone on this list, and this is where this gets so delicate and complicated!, but you may actually be more familiar with her under her old name, as she's been a noted voice in especially TV criticism for decades, and really shaped The AV Club for years.

Fran Hoepfner, Bright Wall/Dark Room, 'Fran Magazine' First found Fran through BW/DR, where she still turns out incredible essays on the regular, now a loyal subscriber to Fran Magazine, her stellar newsletter, and she is easily the best Letterboxd reviewer in the business (not a business). She's just so astute and so funny, how the FUCK does she do it! Best in the business!

Demi Adejuyigbe, of one million things but on Tumblr: the 21st of September music videos He's just on Letterboxd, but we should be so lucky. Any time I have relayed a Demi Letterboxd joke to someone they've lost their mind. Most recently it was him calling the white love interest in RRR Phoebe Waller-Bridgerton.

I've just realized that of course, ALL of these people are also on Letterboxd. Haha what a dumbdumb! I've gone back and made all their names links to their Letterboxd profiles.

BTW, I only came across those tweets because they have been RT'd by Kristen Meinzer, a pop culture and royal correspondent that 99.9% of the time defends the Sussexes. Meinzer contributes to NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour regularly and used to be on the Newsweek Royals podcast.

Meinzer isn't super influential, but she has professional work agreements with larger media sources like NPR and is tweeting stuff from the hateful Sussex stans and accounts.

Weekly Writing and Reading Update

Hello, I spent the afternoon getting tattooed and I'm so happy I did and I love my new art but I feel like ten miles of VERY bad road right now. I should have eaten little snacks on break and it turns out a 4-hour session is probably my limit :/ Tomorrow will be better though! And I am in my cozy lil apartment and gonna make mac and cheese for dinner and probably fall asleep at like 9pm, so things are looking up <3

Writing

I posted another chapter of Beginnings, and am writing it slowly but surely; I think I was a bit tired to write this week and all.

I finally finished and posted Aftermath of Failure (Whumptober 2023) which I'm really proud of and pleased with; I love the Fisher King story and it was nice getting to pull that into things.

Reading

I read Dolls of Our Lives and the more I think about it the more I disliked it. I'm tired and lazy so here's the review I sent a friend:

I finished Dolls of our Lives last night. I found it...okay. The editing is often bad which was depressing. It mostly felt really tonally inconsistent -- they're both historians and know their stuff, but keep putting in schticky little pop culture jokes that are a) not that funny? and b) just appear out of nowhere. If you're going to look at AG through a pop culture lens, do it properly, don't just randomly name-drop pop culture stuff. It occasionally dips below surface-level analysis, but it's not super memorable and I don't see it aging really well. (I'd LOVE someone to write an accessible book that actually does look at AG dolls both within their own cultural contexts and the context of when they were released, to say nothing of the interplay of doll + book, and maybe with an added chapter on how girls and dolls play, and what it meant to release a doll that wasn't aspirational in some way, whether it be an adult like Barbie or a baby doll. Okay, maybe I want three books. But it feels like there's a lot of richness to dig into, and I've yet to see anyone scrape more than the surface.) Anyway, 6/10, it was okay but the authors do themselves a disservice. There's a small section at the end where they talk about themselves and how the podcast has changed them and how it came about and it's the best bit of the book because it's actually vulnerable and interesting, with some theory thrown in, and it's barely shticky at all.

I will now add that I think it'll age like milk, and I'm super disappointed.

In happier news, I read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd which is simply a masterpiece, and reading it was a deep and abiding pleasure. I know the twist and it still worked wonderfully on me -- if you don't know how it ends, I REALLY urge you not to spoil yourself and also to read it, for it's wonderful and you will scream at the reveal.
