wada sez: Animated versions of Pretender characters previously appeared as the “fusion creatures” in “Survival of the Fittest”. This strip introduces more, this time thanks to an Animated incarnation of “Old Snake”—that is to say, Cobra Commander! Clean art below.

Dear Vector Prime,
How come the US military never got involved when the Autobots popped up in Detroit in the Malgus timeline?
Dear Military Mindful,
The military certainly would have liked to get involved, but Sumdac Systems managed to exert enough influence to keep them away. Isaac Sumdac had long disliked the idea of militarizing robots, and he had various government bodies carefully tell the US Military that Detroit was off limits.
Of course, the coming of the Decepticons did upset the status quo—made all the more precarious when Porter C. Powell practically rolled out the red carpet for them, and for a brief period Detroit came under martial law. The military clashed with the Autobots on numerous occasions, getting in their way as the heavy metal heroes tried to put out fires, stop super-powered criminals, recover AllSpark fragments, and follow up on potential Decepticon sightings.
It was after the military obtained three of those AllSpark fragments that their intervention stopped being a nuisance, and became a threat to human life. Through carelessness, the fragments were allowed to come into contact with military vehicles, which came to life as a trio of Transformers animated by the AllSpark's power: Onslaught, Brawl, and 'Tex. The three of them set about enforcing martial law as they saw fit—and given they viewed all humans as enemy combatants, they threatened to level the entire city.
The Autobots stepped in to oppose them, Optimus putting his Elite Guard training to work, driving the military-minded menaces into a crossfire at the army's staging ground. When Optimus attempted to place them under arrest, the army stopped him. They were still, technically, US military property, and as such subject to military discipline. They were disarmed, placed under heavy guard, and taken out of Detroit when the military retreated, having had quite enough of the city—much as its citizens had had enough of them.
The three "Combaticons" weren't seen again, at least until the entrepreneur Swindle returned to Earth, looking for some muscle. But that's another story.

I think what makes powell and headmaster effective villains is that they couldn't really be defeated through fighting and weapons. Powell didn't have special abilities like decepticons or the other human supervillains, he was just a greedy, seedy piece of shit. We ALL experienced a Powell at some point in our lives.
Henry did have the skills but he was also very obnoxious AND Powell's favorite, which was why he was able to get away with his frames as long as he did. We ALL had that one coworker who was liked by the boss bc they both shared the same shitty braincell. And at least Sentinel has a tragic reason not an excuse for his meanness, the both of them didn't even have that! Literal space aliens had more humanity than those two bozos.

oooo kimmie, can you tell us about the tfa and rb overlap?
Everyone prepare yourselves bc the floodgates are opened and now I'm never going to shut up about this
In a meta context, there's SO much overlap between the shows. A lot of the same people worked on it, especially the writers, and it 100% shows. Mr. Marty Isenberg you are not slick.
In terms of the actual content of the shows though, the similarities are overflowing.
First and foremost, the emphasis on cultural differences and exchanges with the human-bot relationships. TFA had a good bit of it and it was very very fun every time it happened (bots not really knowing what level of self defense is appropriate to teach a child, being very confused about what exactly humans eat, bee picking up video games, bulkhead picking up art, ALL that good shit), but you don't always get to focus on it with all the action and political intrigue going on. And while rescue bots has its share of intensity, there's a lot more space for the mundane interactions. Blades being tv obsessed, the bots celebrating Allspark day, boulder's love of just Everything on earth. They had a whole episode just about teaching the bots to fish.
There's also the fact that everyone on griffin rock is a little bit Unhinged in a lot of the same ways the humans kicking around Detroit are. Just. Vaguely Weird Vibes in very funny ways. And the same tendency to switch from revering the emergency services which they may or may not know the bots are part of to wildly distrusting them on a dime. Optimus would not leave an encounter with Mrs Nederlander unscathed bro. I don't know if any of the bots could.
Speaking of humans, the villains in rescue bots feel like what the tfa human villains could have been if not for being wildly overshadowed by the decepticons. Evan and Myles? I think you mean Henry Masterson's shitty cousins he only interacts with through the CoD lobby. Madelyne Pynch? That's just girlboss Porter C. Powell. Quint Quarry? Sir that is Master Disaster if he existed for more than like two minutes of a singular episode and bagged more than one bot. Dr. Morocco? Meltdown but better at, like, everything (especially lab safety).
Then there's the constant state of both teams grilling the hell out of each other All The Time. Chaotic. Absolute Creechurs. They love each other so much but they also all live in close contact and see each other all the time and thus they are So Mean To Each Other (though they're a bit meaner in tfa just bc older audience)
The Sumdacs and the Greenes being two duos of an absentminded but well meaning technological genius and his intelligent and Highly Cool pigtailed daughter who both have to deal with the dad's tech going completely out of control is pretty on the nose too. (Oh God now I'm just imagining an au where tfp starscream successfully gets rid of Megatron after the space bridge explosion and sends him hurtling towards earth and crashlanding right on griffin rock whee doc green finds his head. Can you imagine. The misery of tfp Megatron having to deal with a human. He's having several mental breakdowns, 100%)
Even Cody and Sari have a lot of similarity as characters. Cody is a lot more mild mannered compared to the absolute Gremlin that is Sari, but they both still struggle a lot with wanting to help but feeling too small to make an impact, even though they matter so much more than they could ever know. They're surrounded by heros, giants, and it's hard for them not to feel like they're fading into the background. And when both their families realize how they've been making those kids feel they put so much effort to make sure they're loved and feel like their efforts matter. It's the same arc in different forms. And it's so good both ways.
Overall they're both shows that feel like they're trying to say similar things to different audiences. That Earth is wonderful and worth protecting. That any effort can make massive differences, even if you don't feel like you can do enough. That a hero can come from somewhere humble, and the best ones usually do. That people deserve kindness and a genuine effort at understanding. That nobody is without value.
And honestly? That what I love most about both of them.

Human Error: Blitznut edition:
Blitzwing's holoform is based on Beyoncé. She's his gay icon. He loves Homecoming (the movie) one day, and he loves her album B-day so much that he based his holoform off of her. His holoform is of an athletic young-ish (mid 30s) woman with brown skin, dark brown hair, blonde highlights, long sculpted legs, and a very, very impractical (yet very chic) military uniform. The holoform has a lazy eye.
Lugnut's holoform is more practical than Blitzwing's. He chooses to take form as a heavy-set, yet muscular, white woman with auburn hair. This holoform wears a puffer jacket with a purple turtleneck, and a pair of cargo pants. The holoform wears a mask that covers it's eyes.
The mission they are put on is to steal Sari's key. They are hired by Porter C. Powell (who wants Sari out of his hair) to be her new nannies. Sari is very suspicious of them because her new guardians spend more time arguing with each other than trying to care for her. Cue shenanigans to try to steal Sari's key, including using a fishing rod to snatch it off her neck, giving her a cute jewelry box to coax her into taking it off, and even taking her to the mall to get her hair done in hope that the hairdresser makes her take off the necklace.
Because this is Blitzwing and Lugnut, however, they fail everytime.
What ends up happening is that Blitzwing gets both him and Lugnut fired from their job because Sari is sick of their asses like a week into their undercover mission. They end up on the streets of Detroit, wandering around aimlessly.
Blitzwing, in this form, gets cold because while his uniform is totally chic, it is totally horrible in cold weather. Lugnut gives Blitzwing his puffer jacket, and they walk together in the cold, alone together.

Transformers: Mosaic #374 - "Secret Origin"
Originally posted on April 29th, 2009
Story - Franco Villa Art - Waseem Bashar
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: Hahaha, this is the second Mosaic strip to basically exist solely to insert Circuit Breaker into some unrelated modern continuity where she’ll totally go on to do big and important things. The last panel here is absolutely chock full of similarly-inserted characters, which I’ve identified in the tags. On deviantART, Villa offhandedly came up with justification for why Shockwave might be on Earth, why the robot-hating Meltdown would be helping create a cyborg, and why Powell would even care, saying: “About Shockwave, I'd say he has a secret agenda: he's acting more than the G1 Marvel guy than the G1 cartoon one. Not so loyal to Megatron, he plans to remove Destronium from Earth because... well, it could be TOO useful to Megatron? Meltdown is a mercenary, in this piece, and owes Powell for something (maybe Powell got him out of prison... temporarily). Powell wants the Autobots destroyed, but doesn't want to be involved: so he builds a pawn that will destroy the Autobots for him. These are just lazy ideas... do they work? :)” No. Villa also explained the strip’s position in continuity: “this Mosaic *should* take place during Season 2, before Blurr revealed himself to the Autobots. I think it could work, because Shockwave never shows his "Longarm Prime modes", here...” How does this tie into yesterday’s strip? Well, you’ll find out in tomorrow’s! Unlettered art and Italian version below.

Finally got my TFA refsheet done, yay! Gonna put additional info and stuff under the cut!
Okay, so the backstory still has a couple things I need to buff out in the means of timeline stuff being a little off but BASICALLY:
Sav was originally hired by Sumdac Systems as a chief mechanic, but during the period of Porter C. Powell taking over the company (Early Season 2), she was subsequently given a new position due to "conflicting position needs.*" While tensions rose between the City of Detroit and Sumdac Systems, Savanah was given the task of working as a possible middleman for the two. A contract was set up where Savanah, while being paid by Sumdac Systems, would be the sole person in charge of repairing and maintaining the Sumdac Systems robots that the city had acquired (mostly trash bots, tbh). Sav was then asked to move into the live-in quarters attached to the maintenance garage where she would now work, just outside the city limits. She doesn't mind much, since her room and board are essentially paid off by the company, but she's the only person in this position, so not only does it get overwhelming from time to time, but kind of lonely, too. Not to mention all the paperwork. But, she does her best, what can you do?
Other info;
- *Sav was extremely bitter when she was told she was being moved to another position, but that bitterness got even worse when she found out that she'd lost her position to make room for one Henry Masterson. Losing your position to a crook was one thing, but losing it to a pain in the ass like him??? The worst.
- Even before her life was turned upside-down, Sav was a huge fan of what the Autobots were doing for the city, all things considered.
- She met Bulkhead and Bumblebee first: during a chase with Professor Princess, the little pink villain used exploding jacks to pop a tire each on the two younger bots. Sav's workshop was nearby, and she watched it happen just feet away. She flagged the two bots down, and offered to give them a tire change to hold them over until they could get properly fixed up. She got them back on their way, and that was it. A few days later, the Autobots stopped by to give their thanks. (Sav met Optimus and got feelings for him from the get-go LMAO)
Aaaand... that's all I've got for now lol. :'3c
