It's October and that's all the reason I need to celebrate Izzy lets go!!!
I could talk for an hour about how Izzy's art and playlists spoke to me and why I just HAD to have him do our art, but that's another post for another day. For now lets talk about a few of the early pieces.
THE MALL
his first official piece for us. The bonus episodes and the corresponding postcards was a it of an experiment (it's experiments all the way down) and we were all so impressed with this that we just had to figure out a way to hire him. I was on the phone with Pacific when he saw it and I could practically feel the shock when the colors hit him.

4.10 Audrey Burns
(I AM WORKING ON THE LETTERING) the fisrt normal episode piece. I had no idea what was coming my way, Izzy's style is strong at its core, but the fringes and fiddly bits have such nuance and flavor. Popping colors, photobashing, giant expressions and poses, and a rare smile from our boy. He's dressed in the Hilton uniform because that's what this Hotel was based on. This one has a real Stinky Cheese Man vibe.
4.11 The Owner - V
a rare sequel episode that ties in directly with S1. Izzy really got to play with the composition, breaking it apart with the characters themselves (notice the V shape!) and infusing it with the chaos of the episode, but unified by color scheme. More photobashing (is that what its called?) and a rare view of his Hotel herself design. I love the his Owner so much. Them little grabbers!
4.12 X - X
Originally titled "? - ?" but changed because that's unpronounceable, this one is very popular on our store. Lobby Boy clutching the title and the Owner made of Hotel photos (ELEVATOR BUTTON ARM!) reinforcing the helpless power the characters have over their environment. That smiling crazed face is exactly what I pictured in season 1, and something about the colors and texture reads as fish scales to me it's like the Manager is here too (fish!Manager enjoyers unite)
4.12 Judy Blashy
One of my very very very favorites. The whole cast together, and though they all wear masks of fear you can still get their character dynamic in an instant (i like how the LB is in front of the Manager--Izzy has always understood that he is not fragile fine china that could shatter at any moment, but a mongoose under the house who doesn't like loud noises). Madam Hotel's mad, gap toothed grin, her room number earrings, her NECK LOOK AT HER NECK!!! and of course a great big splash of blood where the Owner smooshed her (mirroring the Managers head getting bonked in S3, and don't get me started on people losing eyes) I love that when we added the Goosebumps frame he drew some more blood flying out over it, always reinforcing that breaking of what seems like real boundaries effortlessly.

Toastystats preview: F/F vs. M/M tagging
I discovered something unexpected while doing stats comparing F/F and M/M on AO3. One thing I was initially looking for was whether M/M fanworks were more likely than F/F fanworks to tag dark themes or explicit sex acts. It seemed like yes, they were -- but then I found out that, more generally, M/M fanworks use more tags on average than F/F fanworks. And given that, it's not too surprising that M/M is more likely to use most of the common AO3 tags than F/F is (whether the tag is dark, fluffy, or otherwise).
Still, I found a few AO3 tags that F/F was more likely to use than M/M. And I sorted a bunch of common AO3 tags from "Most likely to be used by M/M" to "Most likely to be used by F/F", shown above. The middle line indicates that a tag is equally likely to be used by M/M and F/F. Some of the darker and more explicit tags do indeed seem to be further toward the mostly-M/M end of the spectrum, but some of the ordering surprised me. (E.g., F/F is more likely to use "Smut," while M/M is more likely to use "Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot." And F/F and M/M are nearly equally likely to use "Trauma" and "Coercion.")
I have a whole lot more F/F vs. M/M data to share soon, but I have questions for y'all first about this data:
does the above visualization makes sense? I'm worried it might be hard to interpret, so if you're confused, can you share anything about why?
are you are surprised by anything about the data?
any thoughts/theories/questions this data raises for you?
Below the cut -- additional explanations that might be useful when theorizing (e.g., about possible factors like background ships), along with raw data for the above graph.
A couple notes on interpretation: we shouldn't have to worry about the fact that F/F is often tagged when F/F is actually a background ship -- I tried to weed out all cases where the F/F or M/M tag of interest could possibly have referred to a background ship. Also, all of the above tags are used at least 1000 times on F/F works and at least 17K times on F/F and M/M combined... so these numbers shouldn't be *too* prone to the noise of really small numbers.

I know what’s really preying on my mind, though, and stopping me moving onto the Christmas Special. Julie said, ‘That scene on Bad Wolf Bay isn’t working, is it?’ And she’s absolutely right. I love a good note, because it’s like someone has articulated the voice at the back of your head. That scene doesn’t work. I have always known that, from the moment I typed it out, but I don’t know how to fix it. [...] The hardest thing of all in that scene - and Billie might yet have problems with it - is getting Rose to walk away from the TARDIS in the first place. That, indeed, is the problem with the whole scene, that Rose has to act out of character to stay on Bad Wolf Bay. She’s utterly, marvellously selfish, and would push past anyone to get to her Doctor.

Julie’s upset. She’s saying, ‘Leave Mickey in the parallel universe,’ and I’m saying, ‘Too late! We promised Noel that we’d bring him back in Torchwood Series Three.’

I’ve rewritten Bad Wolf Bay again. Finally, I’ve got it right!
Basically, I’ve given more of the decision to Rose, put her in control, and used that control to push away the original Doctor. And the kiss is back in! Then the scene finishes as before: Rose saying, ‘No - !’, as the TARDIS fades away. Doctor #2 taking her hand, and a wide shot of the now-empty beach. Julie is happy, David is happy, phew, good. Series Four, final rewrite, done.

I am delighted. That is such a weight off my mind. Knowing it wasn’t working was driving me mad. It hung over me, during Chicken Pox Fortnight. Literally, all the time. I tell you what helped: I watched the footage of the 4.12/4.13 read-through. They filmed it for Doctor Who Confidential, then edited it together fast so that I could see it - and they had to read the first draft of 4.13, because that’s all I had written. It was so slow! I could see what worked and what didn’t, and I realized how good the kiss was, but equally that the kiss had no consequence. That’s why it wasn’t earning its place. But it’s obvious, in the end, isn’t it? The scene is about Rose choosing between two Doctors. So, on the last draft, finally, I’ve written clearly, obviously, Rose making that choice. Rose is in control.
The rushes have helped, too. When Rose is in the TARDIS with Doctor #2, Billie is looking at him with sheer lust. As only Billie can do! That, too, puts the power into Rose’s hands. The mechanics start to work...

Inside, outside
Pairings: 10k x reader, Addy Carver × sister reader
Warnings: Swearing, minor violence
Chapter: 4.12
Your hair fell over your shoulders as you pulled clumps of blood out of 10K’s hair with your fingers. It would make cutting his dark locks, which had grown to just under his ears, that much easier without pieces of Z still in them. You were both drenched in blood and in need of bathing in the nearby river, but it was safer to wait until all the thick smoke from the explosion had cleared.
“It meant what I said.”
“I know; that’s why I agreed to marry you.”
10k tilts his head around, looking up from over his shoulder; his eyes almost have a pleading look in them. Just over half a year had passed since your group had all gone their separate ways, but it never became any easier to accept; out of everyone, 10k had taken it the hardest. Growing up, he only had his mother, so gaining a family he never had just to lose it was difficult to adjust to, especially with how it ended. 5K was dead, Murphy had gone AWOL, which was concerning considering he tried to build his own army last time, you and Addy weren’t on speaking terms, Warren was untraceable, and Doc decided he needed to do more and left to join a Z hunting party. He promised he’d be back, but I still hurt when he left. You were grateful that Red chose to stay with you and 10K, but all the new memories you were making didn’t ease the pain of the old ones.
All of this, combined with 10k’s body trying to function as normal after being bitten, had made him paranoid; he was scared anything that was too good would suddenly disappear.
“I love you, Tommy.” You kiss him on the only blood-free part of his face, which was his left cheek.
“I love you too,” he smiles. “When the time is right, we will get married, and hopefully our old gang will be there.”
“How will we know when the time is right?”
He shrugs and says, “I don’t know; I guess we just will.”
“You seem lost in thought; what are you thinking about?” 10k asks as you walk through a plot of land that was mainly rumbling from collapsed buildings and abandoned vehicles.
“One day in the future, when we have our own home again, I'll have the note you’d written me framed and hung up on a wall.”
10k raises his brows, smiling, and says, “That's a very hopeful thought to have, although I’m surprised that note has lasted so long.”
“You’re kidding, right? I treat it as if the paper were made from gold.”
“You know,” Murphy says loudly for Warren, who was charging in front, to hear. “If you just told us what you were looking for, it would be a lot easier to help you find it.”
Warren takes a moment to reply as her eyes scan the area, “I’ll know when I see it.”
Rolling your eyes, you sighed. You’d been relentlessly flogging Warren for days, and she had shared nothing useful about the location or any other information that would help you help her. It was growing increasingly frustrating, especially with Murphy dragging the zombified president behind him. After a while of walking, Warren zones out again, but then comes to and orders Murphy to stand in one spot while holding his hands in the air.
“How long do I need to do this for?” He moans, “I haven’t showered in three weeks, and my arms are tired.”
“It’s definitely longer than three weeks,” you snort.
After making Murphy change his arm position and holding up a sign post, Warren spots something no one else can see and somehow finds a hatch that had been hidden beneath the dirt and rubble leading to your next location.

Your mouth twists in irritation as you struggle to lower the dead president, who was surprisingly heavy, into the room the hatch led to, which was part of an underground army base. 10K, Warren, Murphy, and Doc had already gone in first to make sure it was clear, leaving you and Sarge alone for the first time in days. Neither of you had attempted to utter a single word to one another before this, but now you were forced to.
“Easy, steady,” she says, looking down. “Take it slow, nice and slow.”
“Easy for you to say.” You grit your teeth as you feel the rope burning the palms of your hands. You feel yourself startling to lose your grip. “I’m going to drop him!”
Sarge quickly grabs the rope that’s slipping and says, “Holy shit, he’s heavy!”
Even with the two of you trying to keep him steady, the president's weight became too much when he began wriggling about in the makeshift harness, causing the rope to slip from both of your hands. Hearing the thud below, you share a shocked look before both moving to stare down the hatch. Luckily, he was still moving, which meant you hadn’t re-killed him.
You let out a soft chuckle while getting to your feet. Sarge looks at you nervously; she motions for you to climb down the ladder first, “after you.”
“Thanks.”
10k takes your hand as he helps you jump off the end of the ladder, giving you a knowing look that says, “My bad.” You clear your throat. “So where to next?”
“That way,” Warren says before exiting the room.
As you go down different hallways, you come across a handful of Z’s that have gone blind due to the lack of sunlight, which meant it was easy for you to show mercy to time. Not wanting to create any noise, you shot them in the head with arrows. Your group remains silent until you reach a staircase and try to figure out the best way to get the zombie down it quickly.
“Maybe we could make a stretcher?” Doc suggests.
“That’s a good—” you stop talking when you hear a loud thud, and you glance over your shoulder to see Murphy standing suspiciously alone. “Murphy, did you just push the zombified president down the stairs?”
“Ex-president,” he points out. “And it saved us time, and besides, he’s already dead.”
Warren shakes her head. “We better go get him before he wanders off.”

You finally find the president after going down thirty flights of stairs to find two Zs eating the organs from his stomach. “I got it,” 10k says before using a slingshot to fire a sharp blade that goes through the two Z’s heads. He clicks his tongue and says, “Eight thousand, four hundred fifty-two.”
While Doc and Murphy tried their best to fix the president up as best they could so the zombie could walk again, your eyes remained glued to Sarge, who was staring at 10k so lovingly. You felt as if something was finally clicking into place as an uneasy feeling set in your gut.
“Let’s go,” Warren says, interrupting your thoughts.
You go into a control room and look around until Warren spots a red sign with a black message saying fourth strike and declares that’s the way to go.
You manage to fight your way through a small herd of Z’s without anyone getting bitten or hurt. While you all catch your breath, another Z appears suddenly behind you. Quickly, you stab it in the head and ask, “Where did that come from?”
10k points to the floor above, “up there.”
“I don’t think God has anything to do with this,” Murphy says sarcastically.
“No, I mean someone is pushing bodies over the edge.”
You look up as more Zs are pushed over and spot an older man with glasses about to push another Z over. “Hey!” You are behind him, firing arrows at him while Warren begins firing shots; however, the man is able to duck behind the wall. “Son of a bitch! Who the hell is that?”
“Possibly the same zona bastard who hacked the northern lights, then he had the launch codes,” Warren says, sounding panicked. “We can’t let him get to the drone before us.”
“Looks like it’s a race to the finish, then.”

A few things became more obvious to you while looking for the drone, including that Warren had apparently picked up a number of skills she had no memory of, including speaking Latin and hacking computers; the missions were growing increasingly dangerous as the minutes passed as more Z’s appeared; and Sarge most definitely had feelings for 10k. Seeing her stare at him with puppy-dog eyes made anger swirl inside you, but you had no right to be angry when she hadn’t acted on her feelings or had any control over them.
“Anyone else seeing this countdown?” Doc asks as a beep fills the room.
Warren remains silent as she clicks away at the computer, which now shows multiple CCTV footage of a small aircraft as gunfire fills the room. You join 10k and Sarge as they try to hold off Z’s from entering the room.
“Warren, we need the door code to close it!”
She doesn’t answer and sits, talking to herself instead.
“The code! Now, before the Z’s kill us!”
When she doesn’t answer, Doc tries his best to push the door closed, but he only manages to push it so far.
Suddenly Warren snaps out of her trance and back to reality, “It was Teller.”
“Dr. Teller?”
She explains that she remembers that Dr. Teller from Mercy Labs was the one who woke her from her coma to tell her about the black rainbow and how to stop it. She passes on instructions to both Doc and Murphy before saying she needs to go alone for the next part of the mission.
“We go where you go, boss.”
“Doc’s right, we can’t split up now. It isn’t safe.”
“You guys need to stay here and turn the keys in the computer,” she says, glancing down at the ground. “Where I’m going, no one can follow.”
Your jaw drops as the feeling of sorrow spreads through the room; it felt as if Warren was saying goodbye.
Warren pulls 10K in for her hug. She holds onto him tightly and says, “When you get to Newsmerica and find Addy, Sun Mei, and Red, tell them I love you from me.”
This was wrong. It felt as if Warren had already accepted that she needed to die in order to save the world.
With tears in her eyes, Warren steps back from her hug with 10k, turning to Doc and hugging him before embracing you tightly. “You’ve done good, kid,” she whispers. “I want you to go on and have the best life possible, with lots of little babies and at least one named after me.”
You let out a broken chuckle as you held back from crying. Throughout the years, Warren had been a massive part of your lives and was the reason all of you had survived so long. Losing her was going to be devastating.
“I’ll see you soon,” you sniff.
10k rests his forehead against the back of your shoulder as she leaves. The only thing you could do now was watch the screen on the computer.

“What is she doing?”
“Changing a cylinder on the aircraft,” Doc answers. “Apparently one saves the world and the other destroys it.”
“Okay, but once she’s done that, she can leave, right?” Deep down, you knew the answer but desperately wanted someone to tell you you were wrong.
“Uh guys!” 10k says, “we aren’t alone!”
When a Z forces itself through the crack in the door you fight to kill it as the others turn the keys and press the alarms as Warren had instructed causing red lights to start flashing and another countdown.
When Murphy spots the man from before who’d thrown the Z’s down on the screen he rushes from the room, despite Doc trying to stop him.
Your eyes flicker between screens as you watch Warren climb back into the drone and try to watch for Murphy on the other. The countdown reaches the final ten seconds causing you to panic, “what do we do? The drone is going to take off with Warren inside.”
“We can’t stay here,” 10k says, opening the door.
The four of you race down to the landing strip just as the drone dissolves into little pieces in the air, leaving behind what looks like a black rainbow in the sky.

She’s gone. Warren was really gone.
“What the hell?” Doc asks from beside you.
You glance to the side to see Murphy, who looked quite sunburned. You look at him in disbelief before looking back to the sky and saying, “We’re all going to die, aren’t we?”
“Looks like it,” 10k answers.
You stare up at the black rainbow above, finding it hard to believe you’d just lost Warren, your leader, your friend. Behind you, Sarge, let’s out a small gasp, but you don’t pay attention to why. You only look away from the darkness above when you feel something brush against the back of your leg. You glance over your shoulder and see 10k looking as if he’s going to sit on the ground. “What are you—”
10k falls to one knee and pulls out a ring box, “Astra…”
You momentarily freeze, unable to think as you process the unanswered question his shaky voice wasn’t able to get out. 10k opens the ring box, revealing multiple rings, each of them looking a different size. The thought of him saving them all for you causes tears to swell up. You look over to Doc and say, “can you marry us?”
He laughs a little before lifting his head to address Sarge and Murphy, waving them to stand at the side. The sun was setting, the air smelled of smoke, and everyone was covered in sweat, dirt, and blood, but weirdly, it seemed fitting for the type of life you lived. Doc clears his throat: “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the love between these two crazy kids. Now in the world before wedding ceremonies were drawn out, but since there’s a chance the dead could gate crash, I'm going to keep it short and cut to the vows.”
You all laugh at his words as 10k, who’s now standing, takes your hand in his. “I have spent my entire life feeling like something was missing, and I didn’t know what it was until I spotted a group of strangers fighting off the undead. That’s when I first saw you and finally found what was missing.”
You wipe away the tears trickling down your cheek while you let out a shaky breath. This was a moment you’d been looking forward to for so long, but it felt surreal finally living it, and it also broke your heart thinking of everyone who should have been there. Addy, Mack, Cassandra, Garnett, Vazquez, Red, and Warren 10k squeezes your hand when he sees you become emotional and gives you a moment before he continues. You wipe at your nose and nod for him to go on, “Sorry.”
He smiles brightly. “I knew from the moment I saw you pull the blade from your belt and take out a bunch of Z’s so fearlessly that you’d be important to me.” He chokes up and takes a deep breath. “My biggest fear is losing you. When you were kidnapped, I realized how much I loved you and that there was nothing I wouldn’t do to find you. I love you and promise to always protect you and stand by your side.”
Your heart melts when you hear those sweet words fall from his mouth. “When the apocalypse began, I lost all faith that anything good could last, but from the day you saved me, I knew our fates were intertwined, but I had no idea how madly I’d fall for you. You’re my best friend, Tommy, and there’s not a line I wouldn’t cross to keep you safe.”
By the end of saying your improvised vows, you are both crying, along with everyone else, including Murphy, who is now holding the ring box. He looks between the rings and your hand before pulling one out and handing it to 10k, saying, “I think this one will fit.”
It was a plain silver band that surprisingly fit as 10K placed it on your finger. You notice Doc's eyes have now gone bloodshot from crying; he claps his hands together and cheers, “You now may kiss the bride!” Your lips collide, and you smile into the kiss as 10k wraps his arms around your waist. When you pull back, Doc announces, “I now pronounce you man and wife!”
You kiss 10k again and mumble into his lips, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – FUN WITH THE NAMES
Not meaning to take away from all the big emotions in Moonlight Chicken, but they were really having fun with the names weren't they? 😊
JimBeam caused the biggest hangover for our dear protagonist uncle. And their furkid came about because, well, Jim + Beam = Jimbo.
Also, going back in time, can you imagine little siblings Jim and Jam running around their family farm? How cute are those names for a pair of little rascals! 😂
When I first started writing this post, it was because I thought the wordplay in the examples above was a bit of fun. But remembering how Pat and Pran's names in Bad Buddy were also able to represent deeper layers of meaning (write-up linked here) I took a closer look at some of the other names in Moonlight Chicken.
Here's what I've found – some of it's fun, some of it's heavier, and some are probably just the product of my fevered, moonlight-induced delirium, so be warned! 😉
First up is this guy, Wen's good friend Gong–

The Thai spelling of Gong's name (ก้อง) can be seen on Wen's mobile at Ep.5 [1I4] 16.16, and it translates to resonant. And the idea of a resounding gong (the percussion instrument, that in East and Southeast Asia was also used to signal announcements as well as in music) does fit rather well with Gong's depiction in the show. He's shown to us as kind of an unfiltered loudmouth, and this is established early on when his indiscreet nail-and-bail advice to Wen in the gym locker room was broadcast to everyone else there. 😂

This pun also works across many languages, where the word gong (the instrument) exists in homologous versions – in English, Malay/Indonesian, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Polish… but not in Chinese and only partially in Thai, ironically, where the word ฆ้อง (for the instrument) is pronounced more like khong. 🤷♂️ (Still similar though.)
There's also another possible pun that plays on the show's overlap with Chinese culture (remembering that Moonlight Chicken is heavily Thai-Chinese) – the Chinese dialect honorific Ah Gong (阿公/亞公) that many grandkids use to address their Chinese grandpa. (In Bad Buddy, you can hear Pat's mother use this term when talking to him about his grandfather, at Ep.10 [4/4] 11.14.) In Thai, this Chinese loanword is spelt differently from Gong's name (ก๋ง instead of ก้อง) and the tone is also different. However, the pronunciation of Gong's name is similar enough to Teochew (the predominant Chinese dialect group in Thailand) that I think the pun does work too.
Based on the above, in my head at least Gong the character is very much a caricature of a worldly-wise gramps, dispensing advice to the less-experienced Wen. He's even got the near-white hair to suit, and in the scene at Ep.5 [3I4] 3.36 he's also dressed in yellow, which in Thailand is often associated with a higher, wiser authority – a reference to the saffron robes of monks, and also to the current king and his father.
OK I'll shut up about Gong puns now – just as Moonlight Chicken's art direction told Gong the character to do later, via his wardrobe: 🤣

Now Li Ming's name is packed with many layers of meaning, and this makes him symbolic of one of the show's major themes (that of renewal and a fresh start in the future).

I've written about Li Ming's name in previous posts so I won't go into it again, but the posts with more info are linked here and here. (I'll probably write more about Li Ming's name in relation to the show as a whole later.)
I think of Heart's character as a metaphor for LGBTQ+ love – which may seem a little unusual, given that gay romances are at the core of the whole series.

However, I don't think LGBTQ+ love is really the central theme of Moonlight Chicken (and will post about this separately). Rather, the romances are there to help move the ship of themes along, without being the central message. But as in any Aof-driven show there will always be some sort of political statement in support of LGBTQ+ rights, and I think Heart was so named for this reason.
Heart is fully capable of love, a complete human being in that respect. Yet his parents saw him as deficient because of his deafness, withdrew themselves from him, and left him feeling quite unloved, lonely and sequestered – not so much out of shame perhaps, but more out of a misplaced desire to protect him I think (eyes on Bad Buddy's Dissaya here! 😡).
But Heart wasn't deficient as a human being, or any less than the people his parents were comparing him to – they isolated him simply because the language that most clearly communicated his innermost self was different from that of the majority, and they did not understand enough to cope with it. He wasn't voiceless – he simply spoke differently, using his hands (thus all the discourse around not using the word mute at Ep.5 [4/4] 8.04).
All Heart needed was understanding in order for his full, authentic self to flourish (which he got first from Li Ming, and is what the Jintanas finally gave to him when they took up sign language).
Do we need a stronger parallel for the experience of young queer people, whose hearts love differently from the cishet majority's, growing up in families that cannot or will not understand them? 💖
Saleng's name (ซาเล้ง) refers to three-wheeler vehicles (and saleng is an abbreviation of the full form รถเข็นซาเล้งสามล้อ). These are usually the pedal-powered tricycles used by rag-and-bone men (who load recyclable/saleable trash into the barrow sitting on two wheels at the front of their vehicle) or (sometimes) motorcycles that are equipped with sidecars (see this link here for some images). In an example of metonymy, the scrap-pickers who ride the salengs are also known as salengs themselves.

And this name is especially suited to Saleng the cheeky, rough-and-ready rascal in Moonlight Chicken – just like the man himself, the vehicle saleng is zippy, unbound by rules of the road and gainfully shoulders its burden, while scrap-picker salengs are used to constant hustle and hard work in their lives, ready to capitalize on any opportunity that they might happen to find.
One of the more important names in the series is the name of the diner, because it's the same as that of the show – พระจันทร์มันไก่ (visible on the lantern at the front), and it's pronounced something like phra jan man gai.

Phra jan means moon, where the phra part is a prefix used for revered persons, places or objects and the jan part is a word derived from Sanskrit that also means moon (and is a cognate with the Chandra/Chandran of many Indian/Sri Lankan names – e.g., சந்திரன் in Tamil – as well as candra in Balinese, Javanese and Indonesian, and cendera in Malay).
The man gai part is the same as that in khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่), the Thai name for chicken rice. The literal translation for the name of this dish is chicken-fat rice, where man means oil/fat/grease, gai means chicken and khao means rice (adjectives or descriptors follow the noun in Thai). This name refers to the fact that the rice is given its deep savory flavor by sautéing it in chicken-fat (the famously flavorful schmaltz, for those familiar with Jewish-American cooking – see @waitmyturtles's encyclopedic post on khao man gai linked here if you'd like to delve into more culinary detail 👍).
You might think the most obvious translation of the diner's name would be the decidedly unglamorous Chicken-Fat Moon, but I don't think that's the only way it comes across in Thai. It was probably worded that way because it plays on the khao man gai served within, but the words do have other meanings too. The word man (มัน) in the diner's name can also mean joyful, enjoyable, flashing, shining, sparkling, glowing, bright, audacious or interesting. The words shining, glowing and bright are of course often associated with the moon, and in this light (pun unintended 😂) the translation Moonlight Chicken maybe isn't that far off (since phra jan man can also mean Shining/Glowing/Bright Moon).
But remembering that in the Thai language descriptors follow nouns, another possible reading of พระจันทร์มันไก่/phra jan man gai (at least to my non-Thai ears) is Glowing (or Joyful/Enjoyable/etc.) Moon of the Chicken (just as khao man gai is literally rice of the chicken-fat).
And if it's Glowing Moon of the Chicken, I think (bear with me on this) that the Chicken being referred to here is actually Jim (don't laugh). He's the main protagonist and the center of all the action in the series, so it wouldn't be surprising for him to be referenced in the title. (And I'm thinking of chicken in the sense of the living bird, not the food on a plate.)
Remembering that the full moon in Chinese tradition represents completeness in life, especially completeness of the family (referenced at the Mid-Autumn Festival of Ep.1, and written up here), we also see that Jim is haunted throughout the series by a home life that is incomplete (ever since he lost Beam), partly because he is still hanging on to the past. We are also told in the theme song that the moon represents the heart (see this write-up linked here) and I think Moonlight Chicken is very much about Jim's search to fill the hole in his, and render it complete again (despite his instincts to do the contrary).
So if Jim is the avian protagonist in the title (remembering that chicken is also a synonym for timorousness, even as we see Jim unwilling to take that bold step to remedying the emptiness in his life), he's very much domesticated fowl (and we're also shown how fastidiously he motherhens his brood – not just Li Ming and Saleng, but also the late-night dining crowd who come to him to be fed). Noting too that Jim was also from a distant rural farm also echoes this idea that he's very much a gai baan (ไก่บ้าน or domesticated fowl), not so much a gai aawn (ไก่อ่อน, literally tender chicken, slang for naïve greenhorn)…
Anyway Jim is not the only gai in the village (this isn't Llanddewi Brefi, Daffyd 😂). Of course, the other gai is Gaipa (ไก่ป่า).

Gaipa's name is quite unusual (even Director Aof's good friend and sometime GMMTV director Jojo Tichakorn has tweeted about how wild it was, if I remember correctly). Because of this, I think it's very much a deliberate choice. The meaning of Gaipa's name also reinforces the idea of Jim the moonlight chicken because it brings up a very interesting contrast.
The word gaipa (ไก่ป่า) actually refers to this handsome beast:

It's not quite correct to call this bird a chicken (which is domesticated fowl) – this picture is of Gallus gallus or the red junglefowl, the wild ancestor of all domesticated chickens, that still lives in forests throughout Southeast Asia (including Thailand) and parts of South Asia. Bold, resourceful and adaptable, it's also commonly seen in urban areas that neighbor its natural habitat (while still remaining very much an untamed bird).
In Gaipa's name, the gai part (ไก่, sometimes rendered phonetically as kai) does mean chicken in Thai, but the pa part (ป่า) means forest or wild. So Gaipa's name translates to something like forest fowl or wild chicken, that is the wild counterpart to domesticated chickens.
I suspect Gaipa's character may have been originally written as more flamboyant, and thus the image of the loud, colorfully bold (and sometimes squawky) red junglefowl would have been a better fit. Red junglefowl will also freely pursue and interbreed with domestic chickens (they are basically the same species, like wolves are to dogs; it's just that domestic chickens also have some genetic input from the closely-related grey, green and Sri Lankan junglefowl, and are more placid than their wild versions). With this in mind, Gaipa's romantic interest in Jim also makes sense (since Jim is the domesticated version of the wild gai).
Part of me wishes they had gone with a campier portrayal for Gaipa though – it might have been a chance to make up for the negative depiction of the screamy, predatory Green in 2gether. But at the same time it would have been a really delicate balance to get right (and flubbing it would ironically have become replication rather than reparation). So maybe Director Aof just didn't want to take the risk and opted for Khaotung's sweeter, more restrained rendering instead. 🤷♂️ I'm still a fan of what they've done nonetheless. 👍
OK, so on to Wen's name, and his is thought-provoking for the different questions and themes it evokes. The analysis of his name is so long that I've moved it away into its own post (linked here).

Keeping it simpler, Wen's name can be linked (via the wn that we see on his phone at Ep.5 [1I4] 16.20) to a political era in Thailand where opposing camps were known as the Red Shirts and the Yellow Shirts. The Red Shirts were identified with the country's lifeblood (its rural poor), and passionately championed the cause of the impoverished farmer. The Yellow Shirts were drawn from the urban elite (including intellectuals and royalists) and because of their origins among the intelligentsia can be seen as representing the message that passion should always be tempered with reason.
Not taking sides here, but very broadly I think that, based on the above, the colors yellow and red (including their various shaded incarnations like mustard/saffron for yellow and rust-brown for red) represent the different pulls of head versus heart, and we are shown both Jim and Wen struggling with knowing the right thing to do, and staying too long in the wrong situation because of emotional attachment (e.g., Jim with the diner, and Wen in his messy relationship with Alan). And we see Jim and Wen wearing more of each color at different stages of their journey, before they come to their final decisions allowing wisdom to prevail over their emotions. 💖 There's more detail in the write-up linked here if you want to read more (but it's a long post and a bit of a trudge to read, I must say 🤷♂️).

Who appears the most in Paperolimpiadi?
Here we have it! My magnum opus! This story has 27 characters and 250 pages! I spent multiple days on it, so you've got to read the full post, else you can't call yourself a real Atobibster (yes, I'm gatekeeping myself)!

As Spectrus mentioned in his Inducks review Donald and Mickey never interact in this story. In fact despite how this story features both Mouseverse and Duckverse characters there aren't that many panels where we see both.
There are 53 panels where we see both Duckverse and Mouseverse characters. Which is about 4.2% of the story. It actually might not be low, it just feels low...

In Denmark this one was listed as an Uncle Scrooge story, and I think that's a reasonable choice. Although I don't think this story really has a main character. And whilst Scrooge does appear in all but one story his percentage in all those stories is usually pretty low. In fact, let's look at the top character's average percentage!

Just finished S9 and had a thought occur to me... Why is it that the scarier Dean gets and the further from happiness he gets driven, the more sensible and non-douchey Sam suddenly becomes. If Dean's happy and generally feeling pretty good about himself, Sam's always there to start shit and be kind of a drama whore. But the darker Dean gets (Mark of Cain, specifically cuz that's where I'm at now) the more logical and "hold on let's think this through" Sam becomes. He goes from "we're not brothers, this is a business" to "that's my brother and I have to save him" pretty damn quick there after Dean gets a murder boner from the blade
I don't personally believe Sam wants Dean to be unhappy in general (See: Cassie, Lisa, Sam's desperation to save Dean in season 3 and in 4.12 and in 8.14). However, Sam does want Dean to be unhappy in season 8 and in season 9 in specific contexts for specific reasons, and neither reason is actually because he doesn't care about Dean.
In season 8, without getting into a very long-winded explanation, Sam's attitude toward Dean having friends is the result of control issues specific to that season, manifested from an emotional breakdown Sam had after his volcano of life-long abandonment trauma exploded between 7.23 and 8.01. Losing Dean was the catalyst for all of it. This framing may seem confusing or counterintuitive to some, but I can explain why I have that perspective. However, it’ll get extremely long-winded and divorced from this ask if I start talking about that in detail. (I might tack an addition or make a separate post to explain more.)
Sam does care about Dean in season 8 despite appearances from how he abandoned Dean in Purgatory. But Dean doesn't get a lot of the context we do as viewers (and even with context…). Previous experiences and his own abandonment trauma make it easy for Dean to connect Sam's statement with several previous experiences (that also weren't actually about Sam not caring about Dean but felt that way to Dean) and accept that Sam does not care about him. Sam also knows Dean doesn't think Sam cares for him, and in season 9, Sam uses that to his advantage. He wants Dean to hurt. He wants to punish Dean and he understands how to do so—with a lie about who Dean is to him (9.23 gives it to us directly: "I lied").
The Mark is a wake up call. While Sam is not responsible for Dean's deep, long-standing self-worth issues, which make Dean highly susceptible to the idea of taking on an evil murder mark to kill a Knight of Hell and damn the consequences, I'm sure Sam can't help but connect Dean being willing to dive off the deep end to the fault line running through their relationship that he's been working to widen. He widens it to hurt Dean's heart, but also finds his own facing issues, because he does care about Dean despite trying very hard to stop doing that. Dean is in an incredibly fragile state and cannot handle any more pushing, and Sam softens in response.
More generally, I think like anyone, Sam gauges what he thinks people can handle. Sam and Dean's relationship involves a lot of snarky and bitchy banter, but they'll generally chill out on it when they sense genuine fragility—at least for a little while. In a more serious context, Dean is a default springboard Sam has bounced anger off of for a lot of his life, and occasionally projected his own emotions and experiences onto, and occasionally scapegoated for his own choices, but season 8/9 is as far as he ever pushes it without backing off, and he eventually feels he went too far, and I think he feels bad about it. Sam will rarely apologize directly (well—maybe for one thing—years later) but he'll curb his behavior and start doing things that show his care... sometimes in sort of messed up ways but... well. I don't want to spoil season 10 and 11 for you.
The good news is, while Carver wanted to unbury and explore how Sam and Dean genuinely feel about their relationship, which initially results in some of the most painful brother drama in Supernatural's history, he tears it down to the studs in order to build it back up into something still flawed, but a lot more mature and genuinely companionable.

Episode 74: 4.14 Sex and Violence
Did someone say queer Dean content? Because we have some of that here...
Truly there’s been so much written about this episode, strictly about Dean and his sexuality, that I’m gonna take one little paragraph here to say that the surface-level parallels (including the vast majority of the THEN segment of this episode) are all sending up flaming red flags about Sam and what he’s secretly up to with Ruby. Even though Ruby isn’t even *in* this episode. Because if we weren’t already worried about Sam and the terrible secrets he’s keeping from Dean, this episode does its best to launch flare guns at us over it.
But the queer Dean content? I got plenty of that too!

Okay, so forgive me because this is actually going to be a THING. So I'll give you the ep and why I think it's important. (Also, this would be a different list if you asked for pivotal Lucy and/or Tim eps as well, so I can do that too, iffen you want.) 😉
1.01 Pilot - Because you meet all the key players, including Chenford. And this ep, especially, does a great job of laying the groundwork for Tim as we meet him.
1.06 The Hawke - This one isn't necessary, but it's a good bonus! There's a great Chenford moment in this that does a nice job of illustrating how Tim and Lucy are progressing.
1.11 Redwood - There's a terrific Chenford moment in this ep that will be called back later, and is also the source of a lot of fandom/fanfic callbacks. It's great.
1.14 Plain Clothes Day - So much awesome Chenford groundwork in this ep. And, if it's the third ep you watch, it's a great check in for where they are vs where they started, because now we're about 2/3 of the way through the intro season.
1.19 The Checklist - Lucy and Tim are really a TEAM in this ep, and it's awesome.
1.20 Freefall - The first real elements of shippiness have arrived!
2.01 Impact - The continuation of 1.20.
2.06 Fallout - Tim and Lucy + mortal peril. I mean, it's good stuff. It's also just a bonus ep, not crucial for getting a good feel for the ship.
2.10 The Dark Side - this is the setup for a critical Chenford ep...
2.11 Day of Death - one of the most critical Chenford episodes. This is serious business.
2.13 Follow-up Day - This is the first time Chenford makes a major life decision because of the other one.
3.07 True Crime - I'm calling this a bonus ep because while it has some awesome Chenford banter, it's not critical to their story.
3.11 New Blood - Lucy's jealous and it's adorable.
3.14 Threshold - This ep includes a pivotal Chenford moment and contains the look that might very well have launched a thousand ships.
4.01 Life and Death - the continuation of 3.14 and includes another pivotal Chenford scene.
4.09 Breakdown - this is a crucial Tim episode made sweeter by some Lucy jealousy. She's finally recognizing she's got feelings.
4.12 The Knock - Hands down, some of the best Chenford scenes.
4.16 Real Crime - Another bonus because great Chenford banter but not crucial.
4.21 Mother's Day - The setup for the season finale, in so, so many ways. And some real great Chenford details heading into the next ep.
4.22 Day in the Hole - there are two storylines. You don't need the Nolan one at all unless you want it. The Chenford storyline is a real hoot and the ship setting sail. This is one to definitely not skip!
All that said, nearly all the eps have Chenford gems, so hopefully, if you're into it, you'll get around to them all! Also, there are some episodes that do character building for Lucy or Tim that I didn't include, that end up being paramount for their overall Chenford story, but don't really affect the general gist of the 'ship-story. But I'm happy to add them in if you're interested!
