Review: Ten Eighty Trees share new single 'Pathfinder', giving hope to those feeling lost in their younger years
Newcastle based power rock trio Ten Eighty Trees have set the stage to be one of the most highly anticipated artists in quite some time, performing at shows alongside the likes of We Are Scientists, Jake Bugg and King No-One there's an inherent wonder of why this three-piece haven't been hitting stadiums sooner. Featured on BBC Introducing for multiple single releases, it's without doubt that Ten Eighty Trees will be a name you've heard - and wished you'd listened to sooner - in no time.
Setting foot into the music industry in 2018 with their first ever single 'Something Feral', this modern rock band are still continuing to make moves four years later as they bust in the new year with new release 'Pathfinder.' This addictively fast-paced single is jam-packed with thrilling drumming, distinctive hooks and one hell of a consistent guitar performance that shreds up the scene like nobody else is doing. With the track self-described to be 'fighting for the listeners attention', 'Pathfinder' does just that in the nearing four minute timeframe it pans across as it keeps the energy at unimaginable heights for almost the entirety it runs. From the dynamic soundscape to the quickly spoken-sung vocals, 'Pathfinder' makes it known that it's not just a single but intended to be an entire gripping experience with its almost theatrical evolution and narrative in sound alone.
It's rather impressive how Ten Eighty Trees can create such a vigorously energetic experience and pair it with such a poignant lyrical message that somehow becomes best served with this thundering delivery. With a little hint in the title alone, 'Pathfinder' explores feeling lost and directionless in your formative years but holding onto hope and an unexplainable, unwavering belief that everything will piece itself together to work out in the end. With their punchy chorus lines 'blind as a pathfinder, looking to find my way home' not only serving as an earworm but also proving to strengthen their message, 'Pathfinder' more than commits to it's intentions of inspiring whilst still leading with an unfalteringly brilliant instrumental atmosphere. Jumping between quickly spoken but instrumentally puled back verses and an utterly frantic chorus, the different segments of 'Pathfinder' work collectively to showcase these differing points of maintaining faith before shifting back to wandering another unknown path with no direction. By taking full advantage of how a chorus is destined to repeat throughout, Ten Eighty Trees have made sure to utilise their message of hope in this segment of the song as an underlying reminder that hope prevails.
Speaking about the track vocalist Nathan Newton said “I wanted the main guitar riff to sound like a fusion of Johnny Marr and Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil, being chiming and melodic in the style of the former, yet visceral and biting like that of the latter coming together to create a leviathan of a sound. All underpinning a classic Ten Eighty Earn Worm of a chorus, crackling with energy and emotion.”

Según la propia banda: "`El mal de la juventud´ es nuestro primer disco y representa una reconciliación con nuestros comienzos como banda bastarda que buscaba en la música una herramienta para salir del tedio que inundaba por aquel entonces, una vida en estado de latencia. El hecho de recopilar canciones que ya teníamos grabadas tiene que ver con la necesidad de sentarnos a la mesa con nuestras criaturas: la irónica, la que trataba de ser un himno, la del amor perdido, la guitarrera, la electrónica, el hit, la del verano, la que nunca nos gustó del todo, la que nos gustaba desde el primer día y todas las que hemos ido publicando con la misma dosis de ilusión que de incertidumbre. Incluir temas no publicados nos resultaba igualmente necesario; canciones que se han ido gestando durante estos años de festivales, conciertos en pequeños locales y el turbio presente pandémico. El disco lo cierra "El Mal de La Juventud" (título de una obra de teatro de Ferdinand Bruckner), que fue una de nuestras primeras composiciones, donde sin saber hacia dónde caminábamos guiados por una búsqueda confesional de la tragedia cotidiana".
