"For the first time, I think [George H.W.] Bush looks like he's in over his head. You know, any effective leader has got to be a son of a bitch. [Dwight D.] Eisenhower was as cold as ice. He had to be to do the damn job. And [Lyndon B.] Johnson? Forget it. You have to instill the fear of God in your people in order to get results. This is Bush's problem. He's nice; everyone likes him. But no one fears him."
-- Former President Richard Nixon, on President George H.W. Bush, to his aide Monica Crowley, November 22, 1991

Elvis Presley left Memphis without any money and got on a series of planes between Memphis, Washington and LA.
He went to Washington most likely to see Joyce Bova, who was a Federal Government employee – and during the flights and meeting various people, the gift he intended to give to Bova was instead given to then President Nixon.
Elvis arrived in Washington and was picked up at the airport. He dropped off a letter addressed to President Nixon requesting a meeting to discuss how the King of Rock and Roll could help Nixon fight drugs – including getting credentials as a “federal agent at large.” to the president at 6.30 a.m.
Then he checked into the Hotel Washington again. Elvis tried to get in touch with the BNDD’s director John Ingersoll. This failed, but there was a call from President Nixon’s deputy counsel, asking Elvis to meet him in 45 minutes at the Old Executive Office Building on the White House grounds.
Elvis Presley was almost at the Oval Office when he remembered he still had a gun and he turned over an ankle holstered pistol to the astonished security team.
He gives Nixon a chrome-plated Colt .45 while the President agreed to give him a Narcotics Bureau badge – but only after learning that the chief of the narcotics bureau had turned down the same request earlier that day and told Presley the only person who could overrule his decision was the President.
There Elvis, Sonny and Jerry met with President Nixon. To everyone’s surprise, except for Elvis’ , they really hit it off, and Elvis left the following day with that what he came for: the BNDD badge.
At Elvis’ request, the meeting remained secret for more than a year until The Washington Post broke the story on January 27th, 1972.

Patriarchy is an adult problem, and Elon's not an adult. Half of all American Presidents should be female...possibly 2/3 to make up for lost time. We have had nothing but doofuses and disappointments since Nixon, who created the Environmental Protection Agency. Carter had a great post-presidency, but deregulated industry too much for my liking.

Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon
I rewatched this serial, which kicks off the 2011 season, on 1 August 2023.
We begin with chaps with swords hunting the Doctor in a compromised position…
Amy and Rory are at home talking about lots of ways in which the Doctor might be trying to make contact. An invitation arrives… the same invitation arrives for River Song. The four of them meet up in the USA, and talk, and catch up. An astronaut emerges from a lake and shoots the Doctor… dead. Like, really dead.
Only this is a timey-wimey show with bells on and an enemy mentioned quite a bit during 2010 appears — the silence. And then there’s stuff about Amy and Rory…

Today is a good day to remember Salvador Allende, the democratically-elected President of Chile, who died in September 1973. Allende most likely shot himself in the La Moneda Presidential Palace in Santiago when he could no longer fight off the forces of General Augusto Pinochet as they executed a violent coup heavily supported by the United States and Henry Kissinger. Pinochet then ruled Chile as an American-supported "anti-communist" military dictator for nearly two decades in which tens of thousands of Chileans were killed, jailed, or simply disappeared.
Allende, a socialist, was popularly elected as Chile's President with promises to strengthen democracy in Latin America and institute significant economic, education, and health reforms in order to dramatically improve the social welfare of the Chilean people. Some American leaders, like Henry Kissinger, saw him as a potential threat -- a South American version of Fidel Castro -- and the CIA begin laying the groundwork for eventual regime change.
The biggest problem with Allende, in Kissinger's mind, was the very fact that he was freely and democratically elected. In a memo to President Nixon that is still somewhat shocking to read, Kissinger wrote that "Allende was elected legally...He has legitimacy in the eyes of Chileans and most of the world; there is nothing we can do to deny him that legitimacy or claim he does not have it." Kissinger then reminds Nixon that "We are strongly on record in support of self-determination and respect for free election; you are firmly on record for non-intervention in the internal affairs of this hemisphere and of accepting nations 'as they are.'" Then he spends several pages outlining ways in which to undermine, delegitimize, and potentially eliminate "the Problem." After all, as Kissinger wrote shortly before Allende was elected, "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."

Elvis arrived in Los Angeles at 2.17 a.m. and saw a doctor about a rash he had developed on his face and neck. Most likely caused by an allergic reaction to the medication he was taking for an eye infection, but aggravated by the chocolate he ate on the plane. In the afternoon he explained to Jerry that he wanted to return to Washington.
Jerry protested because he had to be back in California for work. Elvis then allowed him to call Sonny West and have him meet them in Washington. He gave Sonny permission to tell Vernon and Priscilla he was safe, but not where he was.
At this point, Elvis was trying to meet up with Joyce Bova – however, on the plane, Elvis met Senator George Murphy and on the plane Elvis wrote a letter to President Nixon offering his services in the government’s effort to combat illicit drug use.
