my favorite halloween story has little to do with halloween but: once at a college costume party i met a post-grad student who grew up by the coast and came from a family of avid amateur (semi-professional? her mom regularly won tournament prize money) fishermen (fisherpeople?), with the result that she (the post-grad student) had grown up regularly eating fresh seafood multiple nights a week, that was the basic family meal, and when she got to college (hundreds of miles inland) suddenly fresh seafood was very hard to find (on a college student's budget) and she was so frustrated that in junior year (after she moved into a sorority house and had enough space) she concocted a plan to purchase her own aquarium specifically in order to farm/breed her own fresh seafood, and i'm assuming she was so gung-ho that she didn't do her research bc no sooner had she purchased an enormous aquarium off of [craigslist i'm assuming] than she discovered that local pet (aquarium? fish supply) stores either (1.) did not sell species of fish she was interested in eating, (2.) did sell fish she was interested in eating but they were tiny/would take too long to grow to a size worth eating, or (3.) sold fish-she-would-want-to-eat of a size-she-would-eat but at a price that made them more expensive than just going to the fish section of the local grocery store (((did she think they would be cheaper? and if so why buy an aquarium at all why not just buy and quickly consume the fish???))), or (4.) a combo nation of the 3.

But ANYWAY by this point she has already purchased the aquarium, so she goes ahead and buys some tiny fish of a species she was interested in consuming (i want to say guppies. i know they weren't guppies it was another species entirely, probably several different species, but in my headspace that detail has been overwritten with the label "[guppies]" so guppies it is). anyway the guppies don't look particularly delicious but she's observing them pretty often (multiple times a day) in order to track their growth, and soon she's regularly jotting down notes and calculating their caloric intake and predicted weight increase and she's tweaking the aquarium settings to facilitate growth and--basically she becomes an aquarium person. you know, those people who have an aquarium and are heavily mentally focused on the having and maintaining of said aquarium (often in a supposedly leisurely but also completely serious and sedately obsessive manner).

so she gets really into it, and is encouraged by her sorority sisters (who are having fun naming and making up back stories for all the different fishies), and yes i guess she also grows attached to the fish (but this isn't the story of a bunch of fish not getting eaten, ok, she doesn't eat those fish, those fish are no longer for eating, but she still eats plenty of fish whenever she gets the chance, at restaurants and at her parents' house i assume, fish are still being eaten, she does not end up a reformed former fish-eater). oh, and then she goes on to write her senior thesis (? or class thesis or. some final project paper thing) on the fish (or on her aquarium ecosystem? something to do with aquariums), and she decorates her graduation cardboard hat thing with a little finding nemo plushie sewn on.

*GASPS FOR BREATH* (no no wait. ***GULPS LIKE A GUPPY*** hah!) anyway this all happened several years before i even met this woman whose name i don't remember at a college halloween party, but the reason i know this backstory is we had both had too much halloween punch and i asked her "so what are you studying" and she started telling me about how she was in the final year of getting her PhD in Marine Conservation

For anyone who doesn't know, Dungeons and Daddies the Manga is a project I've been working on for a year and a half, beginning way back in September 2022. It's been a yonkoma-style recap manga, where I chose four moments from every episode of the podcast to make into comic strips, and just an hour ago, the very last pages dropped. It's been a huge project I'm very proud of, and now I'm looking into the potential to sell physical copies.

Some of you might be thinking: "why would I want to pay money for a physical book when all the pages are available for free online?" The physical edition of Dungeons and Daddies the Manga would not only include the 212 pages of the manga and 53 "end card" illustrations, but there would also be an included merch bundle with stickers and postcards. And if I can get support for the physical edition, I will be making 24 physical edition-exclusive pages, 4 pages for each episode of Sons and Sonsability and Dadatha Christie. These pages will never be posted on Tumblr or in the DnDads Discord, they will only ever be for supporters of a physical manga, and if I don't make the physical edition, they simply won't exist at all.

thinking about how I had a few folks at my last market suggest to me (kindly and with good intentions) that I make and sell some versions of the hand knit cardigan I was wearing because people would "totally pay $300 for that!"

I appreciated the sentiment, but people don't understand what goes into handmade clothes! I don't use a knitting machine. Every stitch in that garment is created by hand on needles, and the sleeves were brioche. Even using inexpensive acrylic yarn for the whole project, and accounting for the HUGE sleeve stitches (saving me time making the sleeves)—the material cost was $55 and the labor was well beyond that.

Let's conservatively estimate the cardigan took me 30 hours to create. Currently, when pressed to put a dollar amount to my time, I use the living wage as a baseline and then go up from there $1/hour for every year I have been actively practicing that particular skill. In the case of knitting that would be 11 years, and the current living wage in my area is approximately $23/hour. Setting aside the fact that this is calculated based on a 40 hour work week and I don't believe that is ethical or sustainable, we'll just leave it at $34/hour. That would make labor alone $1,020.

This brings the "production cost" to $1,075.

Items are not sold at production cost because that would leave your profit margin at 0%. This is not sustainable because it costs money to run a business (think things like paying for computer repairs, buying tools, the tablecloth you use at markets, paying for a website, etc.). Realistically to cover business costs and still come out with a 7% "net" profit margin, which is just a number pulled from averages in the clothing retail business...

... I'd have to sell that cardigan for $1,350.

So yeah! Something to think about when you see the price of clothes that are handmade. :o)

Angst, Hurt/Comfort, cw: self-deprecation, lack of self-worth

Soap was bright, he was 141's personal sunshine

but...

sometimes he was saying worrying things. He would braid those things into daily conversations and move on like no one heard, like no one gave a damn.

And it was partially true, he did it so casually that often no one really batted an eye.

He would talk during gym exercises about getting reprimanded by some other officer because of some minor thing and finish it off with "He didn't have to, ah know I am stupid"

Another soldier while on the phone bumped into him spilling hot coffee on him and Soap said "No, no, no sorry. It was ma' fault."

When Gaz mentioned that Soap is his best friend, probably the best person he ever met the response he got was a bright smile that didn't meet his eyes and a laugh that sounded just wrong "Ye can't be serious, mate. I am no one's favourite"

When joking around with Ghost he would say from nowhere "I am fucking dumb." laughing. And Ghost would ask "And...?" waiting for a punch line. Because it was part of a joke, right? But Johnny would answer "There is no 'but', ah just am.".

When Price asked him for an opinion on a mission plan he gave it, but his last words were always somewhere along the "It's whatever, my ideas are not the brightest, Cap".

TF141 were worried to say the least.

So when they all sat at a bar the barman passed the wrong drink to Soap and he didn't react at all Ghost asked. He knew Soap ordered Scotch, not whatever blue shit he got. "I probably got my order wrong, I am dumb like that."

Ghost's blood boiled. "Stop doing that, Soap." he said in a serious voice.

"What do ye mean, Lt?" Soap asked.

Gaz turned to them, facing Soap as well. "You know what he means, John."

"I have no idea actually, am I missing something again?" He laughed, it sounded wrong again.

"Stop talking like that, son." Price chimed in.

"Wha-?"

"Stop, talking about yourself like this, Johnny! You keep saying bullshit about yourself like you are not one of the most brilliant people I know. I have seen you make bombs out of nothing! Calculating their placement on the go! It is not something everyone can do!" Ghost ranted, trying hard for it to get to Soap.

"No, it's-"

Gaz cut him off "If you will say 'easy' Soap, I will strangle you. Have you seen your journal?? The things you can capture with a pencil? Dude, you must have worked hard for the level of skill that you have."

"And son, not everything that happens is your fault. You can't hold the responsibilities of the whole planet.

and just like that, Soap's smile breaks. He hides his head in his hands and cries as his family gives him a hug.

It will be a long way to change his mindset, but he has support now.

Just a thing I had in my mind for some time. I dunno. Kinda projecting.

Unity apologizes and semi-walking back some of their changes:

"Made With Unity" splash screen will be removed by default from projects made with Unity Personal (sorta big for smaller projects, but I bet in practice this will only apply to 2024+)

Cap on "Runtime Fee" now applies to $200k for Unity personal (up from $100k). No game less than $1 million in 12 month period will be subject to the fee.

"Runtime Fee" revshare now up to developer choice: 2.5% revshare OR "calculated based on Number of Engagements" ("Engagements" is an incredibly nebulous and important term here...still)

Data is self-reported from your own developer data (no spyware! Hurray.)

Changes not retroactive, only apply to people who adopt v. 2024 LTS and up.

IMO it's some good/middling changes to their initial dogshit plan, but probably too little too late for most folks who have had their trust burned by Unity already and are leaving the ecosystem.

Shame they decided to ignore literally everyone internally in an attempt to make the dumbest pricing change ever instead of simply...not doing that!

The oldest of souls. A good night to him means staying in with a book, or with the TV on at a low volume if there’s a football game. Dinner and drinks out at the pub with you is the most exciting he’ll ever get. He likes a calm pace.

His phone only has the default apps on them. He uses the calculator most often. He also keeps bitching about his storage space filling up so quickly, but that’s because he never clears out his photos (they’re all of you).

If you give him anything—anything at all—he will treasure it like a magpie hoarding shiny things. He’s got notes you wrote him five years ago tucked into his wallet. Tourist-trap baubles you got him as a joke sit in a careful row on his desk. Once, early in your relationship, you asked him to hold onto an elastic hair tie for a moment, and then you forgot about it. He kept it in his pocket for weeks.

He’s incredibly good at gift-giving. He notices what people like, what you like, and remembers it like it’s intel valuable enough to save the world. He’ll get things gift wrapped at the store if he can, though—he thinks he can’t do a very good job himself.

He is an old-fashioned romantic down to the bone. He holds the door for you. He pulls out your chair. He gives you his coat on cold nights. He hand-writes you letters, thoughtful and vulnerable, and sometimes those words are the kind he’s too embarrassed to say aloud. Naturally, he keeps all the letters you write back.

Acts of service are really the entire 141’s love language, but none more than Price. He knows your favorite drink, how you like your sandwiches cut. He’ll always help you into your jacket when you go out on a cold day. If you mention offhand a home project you’ve been meaning to do—a squeaky door needing oil, a broken tile you keep tripping on—you’ll find one day he’s already done it. He enjoys very much the things he can do for you.

He’s not great at accepting the same treatment, however. It’s half, “I can do it myself love, don’t you mind it” and half bemusement that you’d even make the effort. He does appreciate what you do for him, regardless.

He tries to cut back on smoking when he’s home with you. Sometimes you can catch him sneaking a cigar late at night, though, and you know it’s because he can’t sleep, or woke up from a bad nightmare. If you wrap your arms around him from behind, press your forehead into his back, he’ll stroke the tops of your hands, stub it out off to the side, and come back to bed.

He sticks extra close to you on nights like that. You’ll wake up later to find him draped over you like a blanket, finally asleep, the lines on his face soft and relaxed. Luckily, he doesn’t snore, so it’s easy for you to slip back into dreaming.

As you approach a door marked with fading Arabic writing, Soap pushes it open, revealing a dimly lit space filled with anticipation. 2 figures are seated around a large table, their eyes focused on the holographic display projecting mission details.

"Captain, I found our special guest." Soap announces, gesturing towards you.

You enter the room, meeting the intense gazes of the iconic soldiers you've heard so much about. Captain Price, with his weathered face and piercing eyes, nods in acknowledgement. Gaz, a steadfast presence, offers you a warm nod. And then there's Ghost, the enigmatic figure shrouded in mystery, whose eyes seem to hold the weight of a thousand secrets.

"Good to see you, Sergeant. Take a seat." Price says, motioning to the empty seat at the table.

You oblige, settling into the chair next to Ghost. The room is filled with a charged silence, the anticipation almost palpable.

Captain Price clears his throat, his voice commanding the room's attention. "We have a critical mission coming up—a high-risk extraction operation deep in enemy territory. Our objective is to retrieve a high-value target who possesses crucial intelligence that could turn the tide of this conflict."

As the details of the mission unfold, you lean in, your focus unwavering. The complexity of the operation becomes apparent, with numerous potential threats and contingencies to consider.

"This mission requires specialized skills and adaptability." The captain begins to say. "From now until the time of the first leg of the mission, you all will be paired up for training."

Captain Price's words hang in the air, and you can sense the weight of the impending mission settling upon each member of the team. The room is filled with a mixture of anticipation and determination, as everyone absorbs the gravity of the task ahead.

As the briefing concludes, Captain Price looks around the table, his gaze meeting each team member's eyes with unwavering confidence. "We'll begin specialized training sessions immediately," he declares. "Ghost, Dagger, you two will be paired up due to your similar combat specialties."

However, Ghost's silence and occasional distant demeanor begin to wear on you. Over the various training courses you barely talk unless its strictly training based. You wonder if he truly respects your abilities or if he simply tolerates your presence.

During a break in your sparring session you notice Ghost, as usual, stands at a distance, seemingly lost in his own thoughts. Frustration bubbles within you, and a determination to break through his silent façade takes hold.

Summoning your courage, you approach Ghost, still catching your breath from the activity before. "Ghost," you begin, your voice steady, "Am I doing something wrong?"

Ghost turns his head towards you, his eyes concealed behind the mask. His response is curt, yet tinged with an underlying sense of emotion. "You're doing fine, Sergeant."

His vague reply frustrates you, but you refuse to back down. The tension between you has become palpable, and you yearn for some form of understanding. Gathering your thoughts, you press further.

"If I'm gonna be going into the death zone with you, we might as well skip the awkward lack of pleasantries." You let out a dry laugh.

Ghost's masked face remains inscrutable as he meets your gaze. There's a flicker of surprise in his eyes at your directness, but he doesn't respond immediately. The weight of the silence settles heavily between you, and you can't help but wonder if you've overstepped some unspoken boundary.

After what feels like an eternity, Ghost finally speaks, his voice low and measured. "We're getting off task." His words hang in the air, leaving you slightly deflated. It's not the answer you were hoping for, but it's the only one he offers.

You take a moment to gather your thoughts, realizing that Ghost's reserved nature might be more deeply ingrained than you initially thought.

With a tinge of disappointment, you decide to accept his response for what it is. You can't force someone to open up, especially not when the mission takes precedence. Ghost's skills and expertise are undeniable, and the team's success hinges on your ability to work together

if he won't talk, then neither will you, you decide as you take your stance on the sparring mat once again coming face to mask with him.

From Apple to Disney, Gucci to Shell, many of the largest companies in the world have used carbon credits for their sustainability efforts from the unregulated voluntary market, which grew to $2bn (£1.6bn) in size in 2021 and saw prices for many carbon credits rise above $20 per offset. The credits are often generated on the basis they are contributing to climate change, mitigation such as stopping tropical deforestation, tree planting and creating renewable energy projects in developing countries. Proponents say they need to massively increase in size and scale to help meet the Paris agreement to limit global heating. But repeated scandals about their true impact and a crackdown from regulators on claims of “carbon neutrality” have meant that demand and prices for offsetting have slumped, with signs that some carbon credit traders are writing off investments that would have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars as recently as last year.

A new study in the journal Science has found that millions of forest carbon credits approved by Verra, the world’s leading certifier, are largely worthless and could make global heating worse if used for offsetting. The research by scientists and economists at the University of Cambridge and VU Amsterdam was one of the three studies used in a January investigation into rainforest offsets by the Guardian, Die Zeit and Source Material. The Science study was used in a pre-print form while awaiting peer review, which it has since passed. The analysis, published on Thursday, found that 18 big forest offsetting projects had produced millions of carbon credits based on calculations that greatly inflated their conservation impact. The schemes, which generate credits by avoiding hypothetical deforestation, were found not to reduce forest loss or to reduce it by only small amounts, far less than the huge areas they were claiming to protect, rendering the credits largely hot air. The findings follow a 2020 study of 12 projects in the Brazilian Amazon by the same group, which found they had a negligible impact on stopping deforestation despite generating credits on the basis they were preventing large areas from being destroyed. A 2022 study of 40 Verra-approved projects led by University of Cambridge researchers found that while some projects did stop deforestation, most stopped none or small amounts.
