Analysing the new Splatoon 3 Wave 2 DLC - Side Order
Tumblr media
I am about 90% sure this is supposed to be Agent 8!
As such, what I talk about next will be based entirely around this assumption - if this is wrong, then this analysis is void, but it's just for fun anyway so hskshj
Tumblr media
I personally believe this wave of the DLC will be tackling the loose ends in regards to Octo Expansion, and more specifically: 8's amnesia prior to starting it. Having no memory of who they are or where they came from, they fight their way through the metro, defeating Tartar along the way and reaching their freedom on the Surface.
But then...
Who are they still?
Besides the memcakes, this issue is never quite resolved. As such- I believe the DLC will focus on that! With Agent 8 rediscovering who they used to be, and who they are now. Figuring out their identity and sense of self so they can finally know who they are. And based on what we saw in the trailer, I have several ways to back up this idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First up: the hub. A coral-ridden, colour-bleached version of our beloved Inkopolis Square. There is a strong coral themeing throughout the entire DLC trailer, and I think the reason why might be relevant to 8.
Coral bleaches when exposed to stressors in its environment, such as light, temperature and nutrients. So perhaps this is a metaphor for all the stressors on Agent 8's psyche. Their environment has changed dramatically, from Underground to the surface world of Inkopolis, so it wouldn't even surprise me if such changes still left them quite out of it.
Tumblr media
It could also be a metaphor for how Inkopolis Square still isn't home for them. Considering the very intentional hotel-esque interior of the tower, a hotel being a place travellers go to stay in, this could very well encourage the idea that this still isn't home for 8. Just a glorified trip, regardless of whether or not they even can go 'home'. If they even remember home. The fanciness of it could also be a nod to how out of place they feel, as though they were in a place far out of their league. Like a common man in a palace, it feels...out of place.
Tumblr media
Then? You have this image of multiple octolings. Multiple '8s', that perhaps could imply that they are still struggling to find their identity in a sea of so many like them. So many soldiers like them, so many test subjects like them...
They were always one of thousands, nothing more than a number in a crowd, so they never had any individuality. They never felt they were unique. So why is them who got to find their freedom? Why were they special?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now we make it to the key in all this:
Pearl and Marina.
Pearl and Marina were a key component in helping 8 escape the Deepsea Metro. So if anyone would be here for them in such a struggle: it's them. The idea of it being a recollection of 8's memories could also explain Marina's glitched out appearance here.
It's just a memory. Were her tentacles blue, or green? Was this her outfit? Or was it something else? Maybe 8 even has some lasting memory issues after everything...hence how even newer memories seem to escape them.
Pearl seems to meet them in the blanked out square, so they're likely a key part in all of this. Just a hunch.
Tumblr media
Overall though, I'm really really excited!! This DLC looks like it's shaping up to be something amazing, and I hope my silly ramblings at least interest some of you <:)
Thank you for reading! ♡

Seated in the dim living room light with tea-steamed glasses, a certain chocolate-curled Brit scrolls aimlessly through job adverts until a particular post catches his attention
Full-time bookseller- The Old Town Bookshop
Taking a sip of his Earl Grey, Steven opens the listing, greeted with the classic rhetorical questions and enthusiasm only found in job adverts.
Love books? Are you a passionate reader who wishes to share your enthusiasm for literature with others? Come work at “The Old Town Bookshop”, where you can expand your literary knowledge and create a meaningful career with fellow book lovers!
“Living amongst books isn’t enough for you?” Marc quips from a small mirror placed deliberately on the desk's corner.
“I thought you cared about animals and the environment, and yet here you are, further supporting an industry that indoctrinates the destruction of their homes?” Jake nonchalantly adds from an adjacent mirror, oblivious to the surprised faces of his headmates.
Marc raises a brow, “Since when did you become an animal rights advocate?”
Jake shrugs, gaze subconsciously finding Viejita lazing on the lounge before returning back to Marc. “Dunno. Guess I actually pay attention when Steven puts on his nature documentaries”.
Marc mocks being insulted. “Oh I’m sorry, I just don’t find watching baby antelopes getting mauled to death entertaining”.
“Of course, you much rather maul people to death yourself”, Jake's voice mimics Marc’s, enticing a scoff from the latter.
“You’re one to talk Mr. I abuse wheelchairs and kidnap patients from psych wards and then murder them in the back of my fancy car”.
Steven interrupts the dispute before it can get out of hand.
“Bloody hell, Lads’ shut it! Look, if I’m being honest, I’m not gonna take animal ethics from either of you carnivores”, then adding, “And need I remind you two, you’re the reason we’re in this dire situation”.
It’s true, between Marc, Jake and Khonshu’s shenanigans, they’d managed to lose their only legal job, and unfortunately, being an ancient Egyptian deity’s ‘fist of vengeance’ doesn’t pay well.
Marc begins to grasp at any logic that means they don’t have to work amongst nerds, dead trees and dust. “Well… Jake and I aren’t avid readers, and the job description says we must be ‘passionate readers’”.
“Well… I’d say with the number of ‘adult’ novels you read, you’d be classified as a passionate reader”. Steven states matter-of-factly, earning a snort from Jake and a finger from Marc.
“Look, capitalism exists, fish need feeding, and it’s either this, working at the laundromat on 6th, or grovelling for my old job back. You pick”.
Sharing a glance, they sigh, “Fine, we’ll work at your nerd hub”.
Triumphantly, Steven opens the application form.
-------------------- ⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆ ---------------------
A weathered sign inscribed with “The Old Town Bookshop” hangs atop the quaint corner store. Parallel white arches and a broad window decorate its petite structure with morning sunlight reflecting off the seemingly fresh coat of indigo, enriching the buildings' otherwise aged aesthetic.
Breathing out a puff of warm air, Steven adjusts the strap of his shoulder bag, a nervous habit he’d picked up over the years. Peering at the lit window, he opens the door. Greeted by the homely smell of paper and ink, Steven gazes around at the array of books and colours, marvelling at the unexpectedly large floor plan.
"Like the Tardis". Marc hums from the window reflection whilst Jake observes their surroundings, habitually checking for threats.
Strolling further into the store, a warm pressure rubs itself along his calf. Peering down, Steven’s met with honey eyes and golden fur.
“¿Gatito?” Jake chirps, seemingly forgetting about surveying the area.
The cat meows in return as if replying to Jake’s comment.
“Great, now we’ll be covered in dust and cat hair”. Marc comments, trying to remain apathetic about their adorable feline coworker.
Kneeing down, Steven scratches the tabby’s head, earning a delightful purr from their new acquaintance. Checking the collar, ‘Dorian’ is engraved on a fish-shaped name tag.
Dorian huh? Makes sense, you’re a pretty lookin’ fella. Steven observes before returning to the task at hand.
Following the familiar monotonous sound of a sticker gun, the Brit finds himself walking towards the counter where, surrounded by a pile of new releases, you are busy at work. The boys take in your features, entranced as the morning light caresses your face, highlighting the soft beauty that adorns your profile. Eyes roaming over your features, they notice your slight frown of concentration and inaudible movements of your mouth.
As Steven approaches the counter, your words become interpretable.
“How are we already getting Christmas and holiday content when it hasn’t even been Halloween yet?” you grumble, condemning whoever decided it was a suitable practice. “I swear if I start hearing Mariah Carey, I’m gonna…”.
Someone clearing their throat interrupts your malicious thoughts. As your head shoots up, you notice the fidgeting man in front of the counter. Shit. How long has he been standing there?  You think, face heating up at the possibility of him witnessing your moral decadence.
“So sorry to bother you love. I’m here for my shift? I was supposed to start today… I’m Steven, by the way”.
The realisation smacks you in the face like a flying stop sign. Crap, it is already 8 o'clock? Internally criticising yourself for losing track of time, you scramble for an apology. “Right- yes, Steven, I’m so sorry, I didn’t realise the time”. Sticking out your hand, you introduce yourself.
God, your name sounds as beautiful as you look, They simultaneously think.
A warm, calloused hand engulfs your own as Steven rolls your name over his tongue. “All good love happens to the best of us”.
You smile warmly, and suddenly, the prospect of spending 9 hours a day surrounded by nerds, dead trees and dust doesn't seem too bad.
Thank you for reading ♡
Also please go check out the fabulous @viejita-n-co who created Viejita! You’ll find a bunch of fanart and pictures of the boys too ♡

Spent like 15 minutes wandering around a Rossman (it's like German cvs) that seemed to have every product conceivable (Earbuds AND headphones! Powerbanks! USB hub! Lego! Guineau pig litter!) except phone chargers. Every time I can't find a product in a German store I spend the whole time wrestling with my own conception of the Teutonic psyche. Is it possible they don't charge their phones here? They may be able to use their elf powers to absorb energy through their skin and feed the phone on their blood. Anyway I found some chargers in the bookstore but they were 30 goddamn dollars which is I guess what I get for buying them in the train station

Announcing Emily Walker Appreciation Day!
Tumblr media
Okay I know she doesn't technically count as a "regular character" but I really like her a lot and this is my blog and my event so I say she gets a day. And if you've been keeping up with the calendar, you know that that day is January 8th!
A loving wife and mother, Emily was tragically ripped from the Walker family and the effects of her death ripple throughout the show both in real life and in Cordell's psyche. She may not have had many appearances but she's made each and every one of them count. So on that day, this blog will be a hub for all Emily appreciation and positivity. I'll be reblogging old posts and making new ones about our favorite ghost wife. I'll also be putting up some polls and reblog games for easy participation. If anyone wishes to create something of their own, please use the tag #emily walker day so I can find your post and reblog it here. If you want to make sure I see your post, you're more than welcome to tag me or DM me.

Ghoul Game Night Intro
Summary: Everyone played the same as at least once in their life no matter their species - Ghoul or Human alike. It's a popular game played by the Siblings of Sin. But what happens when Papa's newly summoned Ghulah gets stuck playing it as a way to get to know her new pack? Well, they find they enjoy the doe eyes and flush.
Fandom: Ghost Band (Sweden Band)
Pairing: Poly-Version with multiple versions.
Triggers: Spiciness, sexual tension, maybe some fonding, dirty talk, shit-talking, shy ghoulish, and more.
Auth. Note: Let me know if you want to be tagged for a specific ghoul's turn or join the tag list for the entire series!

Tumblr media
She didn't trust that smile. It was too straight. Too white. Too perfect...and all Swiss. Had she known that she'd be stuck with Papa's ghouls she may have thought to reconsider her contract. It was not as if Papa was in desperate need to add to his collection - he had only summoned her at Sister Imperator's prompting. Not that it should have made her feel any less unwelcome than she had...it was them that she was concerned about. It had been so long since she'd had the company of other Ghouls and Ghulahs that she felt so out of place within the pack dynamic. She was essentially the baby of the group; newly summoned not more than a few weeks during the most critical and hectic time of the Ghost Projet too that she didn't have the unholy graces to be able to bond with her new pack members until just now.
And what would you have thought if you were cornered during your decompressing stages at the end of the crazy day by you're so-called 'family'. If she were anything like the Ghoulettes of Papa's pack like Cumulus, Cirrus, and Sunshine Y/n would have had the backbone to stand up against the charming menace. But she wasn't. She was simply Y/n. And she was shy as fuck with no backbone to speak of.
Swiss' body was lithe with muscles beneath the black dress shirt and his skin a ashen grey that did little to hide the strength of veins and muscle of his arms from being on display as he casually raised them to grab the top edge of her door frame as his unmasked face peered down at her.
"I-I'm sorry?" she finally squeaked out while gripping the edge of her tail staring up at him like a mouse under the gaze of a hungry feline.
"I said~" Swiss drawled flashing a cocky fanged grin as if he knew what he did to his new pretty little packmate "It's been such a hectic couple of weeks, yeah? You haven't had the chance to properly get to know us right? So, why don't you join us for game night? It'd be so purrfect." his voice vibrated in a pure on that last word causing Y/n to swallow and cast her gaze down to her feet and flush.
"I-I don't think I'm up for it tonight. I'm sorry, It's just been a long day. I'm going to tuck myself into bed...m-maybe another night?" she stuttered softly
"Aye, you've been saying that for the last few times that we've asked. No more excuses; let's go pipsqueak." Dewdrop's head popped into the visible space from behind Swiss' towering frame with a disdainful expression on his face as he scratched idly at his horn.
"I'm not making an excuse!" the Ghulah replied wide-eyed as she snapped her read up to stare at the Fire Ghoul. "I am really tired! Papa had me practicing the recent songs and-"
"Nah, none of that. No excuses kit. Come on. It'll be fun! Don't psych yourself out too much." Aether's calmer voice spoke from somewhere behind the multi-ghoul and spitfire.
Y/n's fang pierced her bottom lip nervously as she shifted on her feet and the grey skin beneath her mask flushed when Swiss groaned from in front of her. "Shit, sweetcheeks. If you don't come out here and play with us...I'll give you something to play with lookin' like that."
"I'll play!" the younger demon yelped and ducked between the two at her bedroom door and found Aether standing with his back against the wall across from her room and his broad arms crossed over his chest.
Y/n felt far less threatened in the presence of the quintessence ghoul; perhaps it was because he could feel her emotions. Perhaps it was the fact that he could calm her if she panicked. Or maybe it was because outside of the rest of the pack upon summoning it was he who had been there every step of the way to be able to help her acclimate to her new home and body.
"Damn. I was seriously hoping she'd refuse." Swiss grumbled only to yelp when Aether whacked him on the ass as he passed by with Y/n by his side nearly gluing herself to his side.
"Come on, kit. Mountain and Rain are getting the common room ready for us." Aether told her with an arm slung around her shoulders protectively making her sag a bit in relief to be under his metaphorical wing.
They entered the common room to find bean bags, pillows, cushions, and blankets laid out on the floor. The couch had been shoved to the side askew and the coffee table had been shoved to the outer edge of the makeshift gaming floor. Amongst the piles of comfort were bottles, cans, bags, and boxes filled with different assortments of junk food, candy, and drinks for their pleasure throughout the night.
Shyly, Y/n took a slow descent into a pile of blankets realizing slowly by the mixture of different scents that they came from each of the ghouls that were making themselves comfortable on the floor around her. But unfortunately, the Ghoulettes were not here for the game night; something about Aether mumbling a girls' date night or something.
A throat cleared softly off to her side and she whipped it around to find herself looking into the curious but kind eyes of Rain - the Water Ghoul was looking at her. He raised a hand to his face silently and Y/n blinked at him confused until his soft voice spoke up.
"Are you going to take that off?"
Y/n blinked again before she looked around realizing a few things. One, all the ghouls surrounding her wore their sleep clothes and were comfy. And two, they didn't wear their masks. She was the only one wearing hers and she swallowed feeling her hands tremble; grabbing a fistful of the soft blanket in her lap when she'd realized with a start that she hadn't...well she hadn't taken her mask off in front of them before. She usually hid away after duties were done and it was only through the door did they ever really speak. This would be the first time she'd be revealing herself if she had the courage to do it.
"I mean...if you aren't comfortable yet that's okay I know-" Rain began but Y/n shook her head quickly and gave a small smile.
"I...I honestly didn't really um...think about it before." she swallowed thickly thinking of what they might think of her if she did take off her mask.
"If you can't...may I? If it's easier." Rain offered to raise his hands to hover on either side of her head in silent permission or invitation she wasn't quite sure.
But she nodded her permission anyway before she could back out and Rain was gentle as he grabbed the edge of her mask and began to pull it from her head. Her hair came down first like a soft sheen of shiny color and her eyes shone like liquid gold up at him causing a tinge of blush to cross his features as he stared flabbergasted at her. She felt herself panic thinking perhaps she looked funny but as she reached for the mask again she was brought back to reality as Swiss whistled.
"Beautiful...."
She flushed and ducked her head only for her to look back up when a larger figure came to sit on her free side. A large warm hand plopped down onto her head between her horns and rubbed affectionately. She stared up at the towering Mountain - realizing just how small she was compared to him but everyone was small compared to Mountain, still - she appreciated the affectionate touch as he shot her a small smile. He did not say a word to her but she gave him a nod as if she understood his unspoken language and instead tucked her knees to her chest; resting her cheek against the soft blanket that smelled like a bonfire, and crisp autumn leaves with a hint of cinnamon. Dewdrop. This must have been his blanket - the scent was warm and it relaxed her nerves a bit as she rubbed her cheek against it before looking around the others.
"So...what are we playing then?"
Aether cleared his throat and picked up two cardboard boxes. "Truth or Dare...Ghoul's version." his lips curled into a teasing grin.
"What's the difference?" Y/n spoke up looking around with a squinted stare as snickers escaped from a few members.
"It's sort of like...spin the bottle and truth or dare combined." Aether began holding up the two boxes.
"You spin this bottle here..." Dew piped up grabbing an empty beer bottle.
"And whoever it lands on gets to choose truth or dare to ask you...the twist to it is you don't get to decide on the truth or dare....you pick it out of the box at random."
Y/n frowned over at Swiss before pointing at the boxes. "And what happens if I don't want to do whichever one my partner picks?" she questioned suspiciously.
"You take a shot." Dewdrop grinned waving a full unopened bottle of fireball. Typical.
"You game sister?" Swiss added leaning over with a wicked gleam in his eye.
It took a moment for Y/n to reply. Weighing her options. But at last, she gave a firm nod. "Well, if I'm to be part of your pack...I-I suppose seeing the worst up front is a good way to start."
"Excellent, let the chaos begin!" Dewdrop grinned throwing back a premade shot for himself.

Are there cats in splatoon
omg there was a glitch that had this ask w my icon and I was like omg me???? anyways there are only 3 mammals we know of in splatoon. Two of them are cats. One (Judd) was cryogenically frozen for 10,000 years because of y'know end of humanity and all land life as we know it. He is also immortal. And two (Lil Judd) a cat who is a clone of the previously mentioned Judd.
Judds a psychic tuxedo (technically) cat and belonged to a human scientist from apocalypse times (hence the cryostasis and immortality) he judges all the turf wars/ranked matches and was the judge for the great turf war (historical territorial dispute between inklings/octolings that happened way before the events of any of the games). He telepathically beams the results of matches to the participants and if youre not in a match just in the lobby or hub you can get advice from him :]
In splat2 Lil Judd shows up (looking exactly like Judd but smaller and cuter) and he has like Issues. He holds some animosity towards Judd because...he's a clone and that clearly weighs on his psyche 😭. At the end of a match he'll represent your opponent and he continues this into splat3. He gives you advice in splat2 instead of Judd and I'm pretty sure he's noted as wanting to replace him too. In splat3 both Judd's are back in the same role they always play this time with Judd prime being the only one to give you advice in the lobby. Lil Judd is now a lot fuzzier and toasty colored.

[[ hello! I made voice clips for three of Rallazarthemagnificent's Riddlers' most relatable Tumblr meme edits. Since you are like the Riddler hub(TM), I thought I'd send it here ^^ hope that's ok! The links are mp3s, since Tumblr doesn't let you upload audio in a submission.

1) Why must my feelings be "rational"? Is it not enough to sit in my Hawaiian shirt, deranged?
2) I'm officially self-undiagnosing. I'm fine. No meds, no therapy, no psych ward, just raw dogging this mental illness the way god intended.

Miranda: Nebula's Luminary Vanguard by Jade Gretz
Miranda Lawson surveyed the desolate plains of Omega, the stench of stale smoke and desperation clinging to her nostrils. The once-thriving black market hub was a husk of its former self, a casualty of the Reaper War several years prior. Yet, whispers had reached her - whispers of Collectors, the insectoid horrors who served the Reapers, resurfacing on the fringes of the Terminus Systems.
Miranda wouldn't dismiss such rumors. The Collectors' role in the Reaper invasion had been instrumental, their abduction of entire human colonies fueling the Reapers' terrifying war machine. Their eradication had been a pivotal victory, but the scars of their brutality remained etched in Miranda's memory.
Following a trail of dead ends and dubious information brokers, she finally found herself standing before a dilapidated Krogan bar, its flickering neon sign barely legible. Inside, the air was thick with the stench of krogan sweat and fermented krogan liquor. Here, amongst the hardened mercenaries and desperate outcasts, Miranda hoped to find a kernel of truth.
Pushing through the throng, she spotted a lone Batarian slumped at a corner table. His scales were dull, his once-proud crest drooping in despair. He fit the profile – a former Collector collaborator, ostracized and haunted by his past misdeeds.
"Batarian," Miranda said, her voice firm. "You have information."
The Batarian flinched, his compound eyes widening in fear. "You shouldn't be here, human," he rasped, his voice a guttural hiss. "They'll take you too."
"Who? The Collectors? They're gone. Destroyed."
The Batarian let out a humorless chuckle. "Gone? Destroyed? You humans believe everything you're spoon-fed by the Alliance. They still scuttle in the shadows, human. Waiting."
Miranda's grip tightened around the pistol holstered at her hip. The Batarian's words hit a raw nerve, stirring a dormant anxiety deep within her. Her brief encounter with the Collectors on Horizon had etched their chilling efficiency, their soulless cruelty, into her psyche.
"Lies," she said, feigning confidence. "Tell m …(see the rest of the story at deviantart.com/jadegretzAI). For more supergirl, chun li, batgirl, tifa, lara croft, wonder woman, rogue and much more, please visit my page at www.deviantart.com/jadegretzai - Thanks for your support :)

Baby blues had disappeared leaving just the whites of his eyes, a predatory instinct reserved usually for the offense, face pinched into an ugly frown, it’s all Raph can picture as he lays there on his cot, staring up at the slope of the ceiling of his quarter of the ship he’s called home for the past few weeks.
He turns over just as his stomach does the same, empty, it gnaws around its own edges, a slick feeling of nausea creeping up inside him liking a slow rising tide, Raph ignores it, turning over a second time.
Today had been weird, even in their terms. And whilst it wouldn’t have been the first time he’d experienced saddling up and psyche hopping with his brothers; he’d already done the whole dream sharing thing back at the farmhouse which felt like a lifetime ago — but this hadn’t been a dream.
This had been the inside of Mikey’s head. Inside his actual memories and mind.
He swallows thickly, the lump that presses hard in the back of his throat fails to budge. He turns back onto his shell again. There’s the same old ceiling. The one that he’s slowly growing used to. The pit in his gut grows longer the harder he stares, white noise floods his ears.
He’d been… so angry. That look, the way it had towered over the rest. Raph knows that feeling all too well. Like familiar unfamiliar ceilings, it causes him to turn over again, squeezing his eyes shut to rid him of the images that swarm his head like a hive of angry bees.
Laying here he realizes does nothing to quell that feeling, so he flings the blanket from off his legs, swinging them off the side of the cot and striding across the room with heavy footsteps.
He makes his way to the bridge, only because it’s one of the rare places on this ship that’s crammed with enough people already. In the daytime — not that space really has a daytime according to Donnie, the hub of their temporary home is full of all the people Raph has left in his life. And as much as he appreciates them, it can feel a little crowded at times.
At nighttime when Fugitoid shuts himself off for recharging, that particular room found itself for good old lonesome company.
The door swooshes open, cool air greets his skin and he takes one step forward before stopping short.
Well. This room usually found itself for good old, lonesome company.
Mikey is there on the step leading to the window that covers most of the front half of the ship. Outside is a swirl of blues and purples, painted across a dark, almost starless sky. He’s motionless, almost as if he hadn’t heard Raphael come in at all, knees drawn up under his chin, his voice is quiet, sleepy around the edges like he was either fighting off sleep or perhaps recently emerged from it, he doesn’t turn to face him when he says,
“You know Donnie told me that some stars you’re able to actually touch.” Raph stays where he is, unmoving. “They’re burning but not hot enough to hurt you. Isn’t that weird?”
He turns then, his trademarked lopsided grin plastered across his face, his bandana hangs loose around his neck which offers the opportunity to show off the dark circles that are heavy around the underneath of his eyes, that perhaps proved that there had been no such sleep in the equation after all.
“Space is weird, Mikey,” he says gruffly, dropping himself into the space beside him. “Donnie could tell me that the moon is made of French cheese and it wouldn’t bother me.”
Mikey has his head hung low now, as if trying to hide himself in shadows that weren’t really there. Maybe it was just a ninja instinct, Raph isn’t sure, but he doesn’t miss the way his brothers face goes tight as he forces a smile across his face.
“French cheese, huh?” He says, voice strained to give the allusion of a laugh. “That’s some fancy moon you’ve got there.”
“Yeah well.” Raph says bluntly. He rubs a three fingered hand around the edge of his jaw just to give his hands something to do. “We deserve at least something nice, don’t we?”
Mikey tries to laugh again, a sound akin to just a huff of breathy air escaping him, his ducks his head down again, pressing his chin against his bare knees.
“Hey,” Raph says after a few long seconds of silence. “You okay? After today?”
Mikey’s head snaps up like rubber, and there’s that grin again, all wide and beaming like he was trying to chase off the shadows all by himself.
“Dude. We’re used to this by now, right? Being inside my literal brain isn’t really groundbreaking for us anymore. I mean… look at where we are.”
He turns to face the glass screen again, eyes flicker back and forth as he takes in almost every inch of the view before him.
Raph sucks in a breath. He shifts a little where he’s sat down.
“Yeah I know,” he says deliberately slow. “But you start brushing off every strange instance then it kinda isn’t good for you. It all blurs together and then when you’re not actually okay…”
He trails off awkwardly, his words thinning out where they hang in the air between them, Mikey looks back around at him, those big blue eyes blink once, and then the corner of his mouth twitches upwards in the faintest of smiles.
“Gosh, Raph. You’re startin’ to sound like Dee,” he teases.
Raph feels his face pull itself into a frown. “Yeah and you’re sounding a lot like Leo when you do all this pretending to be okay shtick.” He presses.
Mikey snorts. It’s dismissive and the way he turns his head back around Raph knows that he’s not going to give in so easily.
“We’re brothers, Raph. Aren’t we supposed to be like, a little alike?”
His voice is small and quiet, and he’s gone back to studying the stars when Raph exhales, all long and slow and complentative.
“I guess,” he replies. “More ways than one, perhaps.”
It takes Mikey a little longer to respond to that one, whether on purpose or not Raph can’t be sure; perhaps he’s been pondering the same thoughts that have kept Raph awake, or maybe they’re finally starting to click together like bits of a missing jigsaw puzzle to finally show the entire picture, his eyes are glassy when they finally reach Raph’s.
“M’still better looking than you,” he mumbles. A shadow of a smile touches at his face but does nothing more than just pass by. “So there’s one thing we don’t have in common.”
Raph frowns. “Mike. You know what we saw, right?” He’s being entirely serious with him right now. He thinks about landing a hand on his shoulder, just to ground him, like it might make more sense in the context of their conversation because it feels like something Leo or Sensei might do, but Raph can’t stop himself from shoving his hands under his legs, just to stop them from twitching with all the nervous energy that’s built up inside of him like hot electricity.
Confusion flickers across Mikey’s face only momentarily. “Yeah?” He questions. He stretches one leg out in front of him, still resting his head on one knee like a damn puppy. “If anything I’m a little embarrassed still. Invasion much.”
Raph looks away. The swirl of dark space continues to slowly drift past the window, little specks of silver light dotted across the velvety dark, and Raph is reminded of the first time he remembers seeing the night sky, peering up through a storm drain with each of his siblings pressed in close to catch a glimpse, all whilst Splinter had ushered them on, little fingers reaching up and up…
“You know you could have talked to me,” Raph says once he’s eventually found his voice again. “You know I would have understood.”
“Talked to you?” Mikey blinks. “About what?”
And maybe he’s being obtuse on purpose but Raph doesn’t care. He whips his head up and forces himself to look towards his brother.
“All that anger? Mike? That anger that made up like, a fifth of your personality? Jesus, bro, don’t pretend with me Mikey. Please don’t.”
He expects Mikey to shrink in on himself; curl back up into the ball that Raph more or less found him in, bury his face back into his legs and just push him away — because that’s just what Mikey often does when confronted. That’s why Raph is finding all this hard to swallow. Mikey isn’t a confrontational person. That’s Raph’s thing.
But instead he pushes his other leg out, stretching out like he was basking under a summer sun, he looks relaxed as he lets a long, heavy exhale breeze past his lips.
“Remember when we were like, eight, and Sensei got sick?”
And of course Raph remembers. It’d been a harsh winter, like most winters when living in a sewer, and their father had come down with a bad bout of the flu after spending most of those cold, cold days and nights from shielding his sons from such a thing.
Those tedious stretch of days had been spent bringing in bowls of soup that would be half spilled across the floor from the kitchen to Splinter’s room as well an abundance of get well cards that were all color and crayon and although their father had seemed fine to them, he had made it clear as to what to do if he didn’t get better.
Raph swallows thickly, his throat feeling tight suddenly. He misses him. He wishes that he didn’t know what to do without him just so they wouldn’t have to go without him.
He nods despite himself, unsure of what his brother was to say next.
“And remember when Donnie wanted to sneak up to the surface for medicine but him and Leo that killer fight about it?” He’s still looking out towards the vast emptiness that awaits them just the other side of the window. He casually hooks an ankle over the other.
“Yeah,” Raph croaks. “They were just scared though,” he adds. “None of us really knew what to do.”
Mikey hums in agreement to this. He’s silent for a moment, as if perhaps carefully conducting his next sentence, which in itself is a little unsettling. That really isn’t a Mikey thing at all.
“We were eight,” he finally speaks, and this time his voice is more raw, buckling under a weight of heavy emotion, and even in the low light, he can still make out the glimmer of wet behind his eyes. “We were eight years old, Raph, and all we wanted was some medicine for our dad.”
This time Raph does reach a hand out, placing it on Mikey’s shoulder, he’s ready to offer him some kind of support that he’s keeping in his back pocket for moments like this the longer they’re away from home, but Mikey flinches away from his touch, head snapping around to face him, tears spray from his face in little bullets.
His face crumples into something wounded and angry before it irons itself out again, like a rubber band snapping back into its shape, his beak wrinkles as he forced himself to smile, his eyes still wet and wobbly with tears folds itself into little slits,
“And he was so sick and we were eight and I finally understood why it was that dad didn’t want us going streetside with the humans.” He sniffs as fat tears frame either side of his face. He brings a fist to scrub away at them. “Cos even though we needed their help, they wouldn’t wanna give it to us.”
Raph stills for a moment as he watches his brother swipe away at more tears that wet his cheeks. He tries again, reaching a hand out, his palm makes contact with his shoulder and this time he isn’t shoved away.
“And all the times Donnie used to beg dad to take us to school. Or when there wasn’t enough food and I’d cry so much.” He hiccups before suddenly standing, like all the frustration had bottled up inside of him and popped right open like a can of soda that’d been all shook up.
Raph stays sat down, watching as Mikey paces, turning away from him so he can’t quite watch the way he runs his hands over his face, tugging at the loose mask that’s still hanging around his neck, Raph swallows thicky, unsure if it’s his turn to talk.
“I guess I’ve just got a lot to be angry about,” Mikey says in a small, flat, far away sounding voice. “I know we all have. I know I’m not the only one and— god if it makes me that mad I can’t imagine how it makes dad feel—”
He spins around on his heel, like he’s about to show off one big grin like he usually has sported across his face. But instead his face is crumpled like wet paper, sad and hurt and Raph knows how it feels. He knows how badly it can hurt.
He pulls himself up his feet and crosses the gap between him and his little brother. He’s pulling himself in like he’s the center of his own gravity, arms wrapped around his middle, he stifles a yawn that works through his jaw.
And keeping a leash on your anger is a tiring thing.
It wears you down, like grinding stone against stone, he has days where he often wonders if all metaphors about anger result in the same kind of stone. Some days he feels far from the river that his father often reminds him of. He feels like he’s just in a hot, unrelenting desert, and there is no river to wash over him.
And he looks at his brother in these fleeting tantrums he seldom throws, and wonders if Mikey is too lost in the desert. If he’s looking for this so-called river as well.
And he isn’t Splinter with his well of wisdom and he doesn’t have all the answers like Donnie has or Leo sometimes pretends to know for their sake, but he knows he can try. Even if it comes out all wrong, like how own anger often does, he can try.
“It sucks, huh.”
That’s all he says. That’s really all he’s got. And hey, he did try. And when Mikey lifts his head to meet his gaze, there he can see the shadows of a smile slowly showing across his face.
“What? Being angry all the time? Yeah.”
Raph huffs. He shrugs his shoulders, more of that nervous energy being expelled out of his system.
“Maybe you’re better at keeping a hold on it than I am,” Raph admits to him. “But being angry isn’t like, such a terrible thing.”
His father had told him the same thing time and time again, when the fog of rage would ascend from his mind, leaving him in the wake, he’d often feel shameful, wanting to crawl into his shell and hide from the world.
And Sensei had reminded him that anger was just passion with a harder head on it. Anger was because you want even when you can’t have.
Anger wasn’t ugly like the monster Mikey believed to have inside himself. Anger was just the protector of those other slices of his personality because they all wanted the same thing. And it wasn’t fair the universe constantly denied them of it.
“I feel like with our track record it’s pretty justified.” Raph tells him, taking half a step forward towards him. “Especially with our track record.”
Mikey sniffs and god does he suddenly look his age again. Space had drawn away so much of their youthfulness, Raph often sees it crowding around Leo’s face is haunting shadows or the way Donnie’s voice seems to be an octave lower, like stress was physically pushing it further and further in the back of his throat.
But Mikey is still his baby brother. He’s still the youngest, always will be. He’s earned his right to kick up a fuss every now and then.
Raph reckons they all do.
“Hm,” Mikey hums, hoarse and raw sounding. He scrubs at his face a final time before letting his limbs flop by his sides, he does a little slow half circle before he’s dropping back into his previous spot on the step.
Raph doesn’t hesitate this time to join him.
“You gotta lemme know your secret though,” Raph says, bumping a shoulder with his. “How haven’t you like actually died of high blood pressure yet, I dunno.”
Mikey drops his head down, hanging low, there’s a raspy sounding laugh that seems to creep out of him.
“Guess I’m just better at it than you,” he tells him, lifting his head up to meet Raph’s gaze, he’s at least relieved to see an actual smile ghosting across his face this time. “Don’t take it personally though, bro.”
“Well,” Raph says shortly. “If you ever wanna just. Maybe. I dunno. Not explode together then… I’m here, man. I mean it.”
Mikey hums, leaning over to press his weight across Raph’s side, his head heavy across his shoulder, there’s a hand steady on his shell when he lands a few solid pats there.
“I know bro,” he says sleepily. Like all the energy had just zapped right outta him there and then. “I know.”
And they sit there for a while, his brothers weight a welcome one as they watch together, the universe passes them, washing over the ship in hues of blues and purples and little sparkly whites.
Like a river over stone, or like maybe like stars across the dark sky, it’s all the same to Raph.
