you took in a deep breath as you shoved your way through the front door and pushed your shoes and jacket off.

no, it wasn’t your place. but you made yourself right at home, dropping your jacket on the floor and dragging your feet into some slippers that didn’t belong to you. you wandered into the kitchen and grabbed a beer as you heard chuckling from the living room.

“would’ve been nice of you to call, you know.”

“i live here. shut up.” you rolled your eyes, popping the beer can open and finally turning to look at the actual resident of the place you so rudely barged into.

dazai was smiling lazily at you, sipping his own beer, clearly lounging during a rare night in. you, however, did not have that luxury; kunikida kept you behind to clean up one of dazai’s messes.

“you’re a real jackass.”

“and yet, you’re here in my apartment. how interesting is that!” he laughed again, tilting his head as you moved to sit next to him on the couch and deflate like a punctured beach ball.

“your place was closer than mine. i didn’t want to walk home.”

“you had kunikida drop you off.”

“i had kunikida drop me off.” you took a swig of your beer and made a face. “couldn’t even get better beer? this is shit.”

“didn’t know you were coming, your highness. will you ever forgive me?”

“i’m mad at you,” you stated, but it came out more like you were remembering that you were supposed to be mad rather than actually being mad. you yawned, covering your mouth with the back of your hand, and dazai sat up to reach toward the coffee table and use the remote to shut the television off.

“you look exhausted.”

“wow, thanks.” you shot dazai a look, and he just smiled a bit and shrugged with one shoulder.

“just making an observation.”

he kept his mouth shut for just a moment and let you sip your shitty beer, and then put it down. you sat back again in his couch, turning your head to look at him.

dazai pushed some of his hair back from his face as he shifted us position, resting his upper back against the armrest and bringing one of his legs up onto the couch cushions. he hummed as he opened his arms to you, “c’mon. you look like you need a little something.”

you let out a tiny breath, almost of relief, kicking your slippers off to move and crawl over him.

dazai understood you. you had no drive for romance, not wanting any form of relationship, really, but the need for human connection was always there. dazai had understood from the moment you said it.

you rested your weight on him, feeling his arms wrap around you with practiced ease. his one hand moved to your chin and guided your face towards his. you let your eyes flutter shut as your lips gently met his. he tasted like menthol and peppermint. maybe he did know you were coming over. he was always intuitive.

he kissed you so gently, almost sweetly, but it was more an expression of human connection. it made you feel warm, cared for, comfortable.

you pulled away and he didn’t chase. you settled your cheek against his collarbone and felt his lips graze over your hairline, his long fingers tracing over your back as he held you.

“seriously though, you look like shit. you should sleep.”

“i could absolutely wring your neck right now.”

“you would? really? oh, thank- ow! hey!” you pinched him in the side, huffing against his neck in annoyance.

“shut up. i’m trying to relax here.” you grumbled against his skin, and you heard his laugh rumble in his chest.

“fine, fine. since you did me a favor, i guess i’ll let you use me like a mattress.”

“you owe me a lot more than this.”

“can i pay you in kisses?”

“no. but you can pay me with lunch tomorrow.”

“hm, fair.” dazai mumbled into your hair as he fully went limp under you, and you know he shut his eyes, too. your annoyance faded into that deep feeling of care and gratefulness as you nuzzled more into the crook of his neck.

dazai was an ass, but he was your ass. you could keep him around.

Because I’m not done talking about it, here’s some meta nobody asked for about When the Sun Goes Black

I’ve probably mentioned before that it was originally conceptualized as a Chuuya centric fic, but as you all probably know by now I have a thing about guilt so writing this story from Dazai’s perspective just came so much easier to me. It just felt more natural to be writing from the observer position, unable to actually do much but watch and note and feel about it.

I’ve also mentioned that part of the hospital scenes, particularly the first one with Dazai crunching himself in a chair was inspired by some fanart. Further more the repeated image of lying awake next to some one was inspired heavily by Famous Last Words by MCR, particularly the bridge: “I see you lying next to me / With words I thought I'd never speak / Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead / 'Cause I see you lying next to me / With words I thought I'd never speak / Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead”. Though on that thing about keeping watch, and how it does come up a few times, I thought it would be a really nice touch for care without it being too touchy-feely? Because it almost comes off as practical, but it’s so firmly entrenched in motivations that it does feel like something skk would do for each other: Dazai, private as he is, would want his privacy maintained should he be unable to uphold it himself, likewise Chuuya would want his autonomy in place wouldn’t want to be poked and prodded at more than necessary, and because they know each other so well this is a thing they do for each other: Dazai watches that nothing more than necessary is done in hospital, and Chuuya watches that nobody sees any of Dazai’s private moments of weakness.

The fic itself was written with the intentions of being gen/platonic, because I don’t think knowing someone is inherently romantic and I don’t think intimacy whether physical or emotional has to be romantic either, however I did tag both the platonic tag and the ship tag when I actually posted because I know some people would be inclined to read it as slash or pre-slash, which is their prerogative and I don’t particularly mind. (And also maybe I hoped it would boost interaction, I’m well aware that gen fics don’t often get as much attention as ship stuff, as of yet that may have been a good call considering the stats). So however you want to define the relationship in this fic is I suppose based on your perceptions, I define it simply as partners but whether you want to call it friends or QPPs or romantic or whatever else is up to you the reader.

I also realized while writing it that I have kinda conflicting thoughts in my head of Dazai with medical stuff: there’s old headcanons rattling around about medical based traumas that I don’t really vibe with as much now that we have more canon to work with, another marble thinks it’s funny if Dazai doesn’t know anything medical —like doesn’t even know how to take blood pressure doesn’t know— despite being fostered by a doctor, and a third part (the part that reared during this) was that Dazai just has medical terminology rattling in his skull with no actual use for it (hence, listing phenomena by proper terms in the fic, a specific bone being where he lays his head by habit, etc). That last marble is entirely because I had to take anatomy for three years as part of my animation program and then fell down way too many medical rabbit holes and decided to make it everyone else’s problem. I kinda like the flavour of it though! I might use a bit of it in later things too, like the vampire fic or Tattoo, but we’ll see.

I think the vampire fic would be a good fit, it’s gonna be whack because I never write anything set in the current canon or later because I don’t know what I want to do with the Rats or Decay of Angels or the Hunting Dogs or any of the other factions we have running around now. (Probably I’ll not deal with it at all and just do a little one room, two man play for the vampire thing, look guys I have no idea how they’re going to resolve this current arc and I’m very stressed that the British are going to be even worse somehow and bigger stakes and as much as I think Agatha’s design is nice I’m SCARED)

Anyway. I’m really happy with my gen fic even if it took me multiple years to remember to actually write it (thanks Savvy for listening to me ramble in 2019 —I hope you see this because I can’t recall if you have a new account and your old one is deactivated, and thanks @feralrookie because I definitely rambles at you about it too and I appreciate you a lot)

thinking abt kunikatai.. theyre so real. been in a qpr since they were like 15. kunikida comes over to clean up his house and cuddle with him him and occasionally complain about all the other guys shes dating and how shes struggling so much to deal with them and katai thinks its really ironic because he knows how much of a a disaster he is and yet kuni talks to him about them like hes not one of the others. the first person they go to when theyre even the slightest bit upset is each other. kuni gets just a little too frustrated with dazai and beelines straight to katais to hide out until she gets over it or he apologises. she embarrassed herself in front of chuuya by being so awkward and goes straight to katais to hide under his futon. bram brings up marriage and she spends hours talking through every reason for and against it to katai who only pretends to chime in because he knows she’ll work it out. her texting him whenever sigma did something too cute to process. and katais never minded. because at the end of the day she keeps coming back to him even though he struggles to reach out to her. theyre just able to relax with each other. and its so simple between them. and they love each other….. god…

the sun was cracking through the slit in the curtains, gliding over his face and making him stir. dazai shifted onto his back in bed, his one arm trapped underneath your head and the other arm being tossed over his eyes to hide them from the orange-red sunrise. he groaned inwardly; another night of restless sleep, disturbed by the sun.

you, however, were still sleeping peacefully, despite the light starting to creep over your face. you nuzzled further into his side, seeking out a warmth he could provide. he dropped his arm from his face to look down at you, staring at your parted lips, at how your chest rose and fell in a steady pace that made him want to attempt to fall asleep again despite the light.

it wasn’t often dazai got a good look at you sleeping. he wasn’t necessarily an early riser, but you managed to sleep in until the last possible second before you both needed to be at the agency, so he almost always got up before you. this was a treat of sorts, considering how he had gotten home late from a mission you hadn’t been suitable for. he had dropped into bed next to you and promptly passed out cold. his limbs were even still sore.

he sighed softly and moved his hand to brush your hair away from your face, and that’s what got you to stir. you made a slight face in your sleep and your breath hitched, a sign of waking up, before your eyes slowly cracked open like the morning sun and caught dazai’s gaze.

you blinked slowly, like some sort of cat, coming to terms with the world around you before whining and shutting them again. “‘samu, what time is it?”

“too early, dove.” he chuckled softly, petting your hair oh so gently and pulling you closer with what little strength he had in his arm that was fast asleep under your weight.

you grunted as you turned over to pretty much be laying on top of him, pressing a sleepy kiss to his collarbone. “you woke me up last night when you got home, asshole.”

“i know, i’m sorry. it was exhausting.” “did you get hurt?”

“me? get hurt? never. chuuya could barely land a punch to me last night. must’ve been thrown off his game.” you snorted and curled an arm around him tighter in a half-hug, lifting your head to look at him with this gentle sort of gaze that made him want to shrink. “osamu.”

“hm?”

“i…” you furrowed your brows. you wanted to say something, express your emotions, make him understand that moments like this are a reason to live for you, just as much as they are reasons for him, but it was too early. you screwed your face up, and he had to bite his lip to stop himself from laughing. you huffed and smacked his arm before laying back down on top of him. “promise me that next time, you’ll at least give me a kiss goodnight if you need to wake me up that late.”

dazai watched as much as he felt you melt into him completely, threading his fingers through your hair. many things between you would almost always be left more implied than said.

Okay so like this Fandom is DEAD but currently thinking about Soukoku from BSD both being aro (I think I saw a post on it a bit ago) and them being on a "date" with Shin Soukoku. Like Akutagawa and Atsushi are scrolling along together and Atsushi has literal heart eyes. Akutagawa has the tiniest smile ever but for him he might as well be professing his love with a sonnet and he isn't even knocking Atsushi's hand away when he goes to link their fingers under the cherry blossoms.
