Until Dawn

A SMALL JOY: Josh Washington x fem!reader

Summary: Taking Dr Hill's advice, Josh and his lover go up to the lodge and look through all the things his sisters had left behind - after an interesting find she does her best to take his mind off the sadness he's experiencing.

Notes: English isn't my first language. I apologize for any mistake I may have made while I wrote this short story.

To be honest, Until Dawn is still one of my favourite horror games. Thanks to the game I found my favourite YouTube channel, my English improved a lot because I wanted to understand every word, and I have a huge crush on Rami Malek to this very day. Me and my friends were obsessed with him the time the game came out, and soon started to watch more of his work together.

Josh Washington was one of my first fictional crushes, I could defend him for years without getting tired and I drew him so many times I actually learned how to draw portraits correctly.

There's a gameplay I like to rewatch every year, because of the great memories I have connected to it. I always fall in love with Josh Washington once again - and thanks to that tradition, I started to write for him as well.

Warnings: a bit of swearing, mentioned depression and loss, mentioning the Washington sisters' disappearance and/or death

° "(...) We would come up in the summer and we would have the best time. The whole family was there - mom, dad, my sisters. It was some serious competition out there on the big lawn... I don't know. Can't go back. New reality." °

She listens carefully, noticing every little pitch or drop in Josh's voice as he speaks - and as he puts down the baseball bat all she can think about is grabbing him and pulling him into a hug, a tight one, the kind that is both loving and comforting. She watches him, she examines his every little move and her heart aches every single time she finds a new sign of sadness.

She hates it.

She hates that look on his face. She hates that change in his voice. She hates that he feels alone. She hates that the whole case is making him go crazy. She hates that nothing is certain and he can't even grieve.

She hates that he had to change so much; that he had to become this depressed because of some stupid, messed up prank their friends had decided to pull on his sister.

He didn't deserve any of it. He doesn't deserve any of it. None of the Washington kids do.

Coming up here was already hard - back to the mountain where Hannah and Beth disappeared, where they played around like stupid teenagers do. Dr Hill said it's for the best - Josh needs some closure, some proof that he needs to slowly start to move on. She thinks it's bullshit - Josh thinks so too. It won't be easy to put yourself through something like this.

But regardless, they came. They are here now, looking through the rooms, the basement...

The memories are hurting her - and if she as a friend is hurting this badly than Josh must suffer a lot.

"Teach me." the words suddenly burst out before she can stop them, wanting to make Josh concentrate on something else - not wanting him to get lost in his own mind.

"What?" the question is loud in the basement.

"Teach me how to play." she continues on, feeling unsure like she tries to cross a very thin and sensitive line. "I've never played baseball before."

"It's been a while since I did so." Josh starts to explain, his gaze falling on the bat he put down. "You really- want to?"

She steps closer to him slowly, carefully, as if she tries to get close to a very scared and wounded animal. She touches his arm, her fingers hold him as her thumb brushes along his skin in an up and down motion. She leans towards him, her face touching his shoulder as she presses a kiss to the area what isn't covered by his t-shirt.

"You don't have to if you don't want to." she whispers. "I know it's not-" she holds that thought and says something else instead: "I just haven't seen you play yet and I want to join in."

Josh looks at her over his shoulder, he looks at her as she tries to smile even if her eyes stay sad. He watches her like she's the only thing he has left, like she's the only person who matters anymore. He looks at her and feels something break inside, realizing that she really is the only one who he has.

"All right." he says and when he sees her eyes change a tiny bit - showing a bit of happiness - he feels his heart flutter. It makes him feel better, it makes him want to touch her too, putting his hand over hers - over the one which is still clinging onto his arm. "As long as you promise me you won't accidentally hit yourself with the bat."

And there's what he wanted to see - her expression changes, playful offence takes the sadness' place and she gently hits his back.

"Hey! I wouldn't do that."

"You totally wouldn't." his sarcasm earns him another punch and despite the situation and the place, he feels like he got something back.

The last time they bickered like this was half a year ago, the night his sisters had disappeared. They drank and played around until they started to make out in the kitchen, only stopping when Chris stepped inside the room wanting some booze for himself.

As they climb the stairs hand in hand they both feel somewhat relieved. They found a kind of small joy, a bit of happiness - something what they had left here months ago. Josh chuckles when she trips and almost falls, she feels excited as he hands her the baseball bat outside.

"Since there're only the two of us here, I think it's best I teach you how to hit the ball and not yourself."

"I'm not that clumsy Mister!" she tries to sound offended, but it doesn't work.

"I know you too well, girl; and I don't trust you with that at all."

Josh stands behind her, keeping a gentle hold on both of her arms as he explains how to stand and how to hold the bat. She chuckles when he playfully tickles her and this time she doesn't feel guilty about laughing. Before he lets go of her to throw the ball, he gives her a short hug and presses a kiss into the crook of her neck.

She misses the first time...

and the second time; and the third time...

She misses and Josh laughs and she thinks it's the most beautiful sight she's ever seen.

They change positions after a while and no matter how she throws, Josh never misses - not even once. He hits the ball every single time and it flies and lands far away.

She has the feeling that in that very moment, doing that very thing they both feel somewhat complete. She feels like Josh's smiles are honest, his laughs are honest and she forgets about Dr Hill and his stupid advice.

"No shit you like to play it." she says after a while as the both of them are lying in the grass, her head resting on Josh's arm. "It is fun."

"Believe me darling, it is much more fun when you actually hit the ball." his voice has a teasing edge to it and for a moment she thinks about turning towards him and hitting him playfully once again - but she doesn't.

Instead - hoping to get something more, trying to get a kind of good change out of him, she says: "I will, after a bit more training. You'll teach me, I have no doubt about that."

Josh turns towards her, gently touching her face and playing with her hair. She tries to read his face and she realizes that he understands what she's playing at. She wonders if he'll get upset or sad... but she gets an answer pretty quickly.

"I will - of course I will. You'll be the best player in this damn country."

The muscles in her face twitch and she feels like she'll cry. It's been so long, so long since Josh smiled and laughed that now seeing it again feels like a whole new experience. She doesn't want to leave the place or the moment. It's too nice.

"Better than you?"

"Way better." he promises and lets go of the lock of hair he's been playing with. "I love you, you know that, right?"

She feels frozen at the question and starts to wonder where it's coming from. The doubt in his voice, the softness in his eyes... He deserves the world, he deserves everything in it and he deserves to know that he does enough for her - she feels his love and every single emotion and action it causes.

"Of course I do... I know." she promises. "I love you too. And I'm here for you, no matter what."

It's her turn to lean in and she kisses him, making sure the kiss is soft and calm. She wants to make him feel whole and safe. She wants him to be happy.

They lay back down and stay quiet for a bit, enjoying the sunlight and the light summer breeze. She feels like she could melt. Melt into the feeling and moment forever, without ever getting bored.

"You know," Josh starts suddenly, his voice soft and unsure. "it's been a while since I've taken you out on a date."

"It's fine, Josh. These past months weren't exactly the best."

"No... I know." for a few moments he stays silent, not knowing what to say. "All I want to say is I have a few movies here we can watch and we can have a nice time before we-"

"-go back to them." she finishes, understanding what he means.

Them. All the friends, all the family members and pals who show an annoying amount of pity. All of those people who try to comfort Josh when doesn't want to do anything with them. The people who make him feel worse than better.

"I'd love that." she smiles at him as he turns towards him and hugs him. "But no horror."

"No horror." Josh nods.

It wouldn't be good for either of them.

She kisses his shoulder as they get going, stretching their muscles, before climbing the stairs to go and find the movies Josh was talking about.

As they look over his DVDs while hugging, all she can think about is how unfair life is, because Josh doesn't deserve any of the problems life threw at him...

Awe tysm! Of course, I can, I love writing about music 😭 I had to delve into the depths of my Spotify to actually see what bands I know, that I should pick for these guys. This totally isn't me projecting btw.

I ended up just giving them a band they like and a singular musical artist.

(I've been forgetting to specify or elaborate on this, most of the time, unless mentioned, these silly's are in present day and not like the 60s lmao.)

Demo and Hozier oh my god, its insane how much he likes him. I don't know how to elaborate on this further, but like, "Would That I"??? I feel like he loves that song! Also, I feel like all I have to say is "Take Me To Church" and I know some people will understand that immediately. This man just uses music as escapism, of course he likes Hozier.

Will Wood and The Tapeworms is a band that I've already deemed one of Demo favorites because of "The First Step." but this man just genuinely loves all of the songs. "The First Step", "Front Street", "6up 5oh Copout (Pro/Con)" and "Hand Me My Shovel, I'm Going In!" Are his favorites though.

Engie is a hardcore Dolly Parton fan. I know it's played out, I know it's obvious, I know its tropey, but I can't deny that this man loves Dolly Parton. Like this man is head of the fan club and I won't stop saying it. It would be wrong for me to pretend he doesn't heavily relate to "9 to 5."

Also loves the Chordettes oddly enough? He thinks all the way they sing is beautiful. He adores the cover of "Hello! Ma Baby". But is also a sucker for the popular ones, "Mr. Sandman" and "Lollipop". I will say though, it's utterly disturbing to the other mercs when it's like midnight and they get up for something and just here a really softly played "Mr. Sandman". Only one not disturbed is Medic, but like, it's hard to disturb a man who also has been known to play those old eerie songs at odd hours, they bond over this.

This man loves Elton John, he loves how he can relate heavily to some of the songs and then just genuinely enjoy other ones with no other meaning. Like he'll listen to "I'm Still Standing", and feel a lot of emotions from it, and then like "Crocodile Rock" will come on and just vibe to it.

Heavy also likes the Beetles. I don't know I just think he likes way the songs are sung, and the meaning he pulls from the lyrics themselves. Reads into music a lot and values being able to do that. Likes songs about love, and the Beetles are great for that. Don't get him started on "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "Eleanor Rigby".

MARINA being Medics favorite is a mix of him being a teen girl in my mind, and an actual genuine ability to relate to some of the songs. I will say this until the day I die. This man has never felt good enough. Not even once. He's always working to try and get better, and once he does get better he's moving the goal post of getting better. Has played "Are You Satisfied" more times than you can count. "Oh No" and "Hermit The Frog" are also one's he finds himself both loving and relating to.

Would you guys be mad if I said this man was obsessed with Queen? (I am not projecting here, I swear!) Similarly to Heavy, he's a sucker for a romantic song or two. Loves "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" Also you want to talk about not feeling good enough, loops "Bohemian Rhapsody" Have you guys seen the Bohemian Rhapsody movie? You guys know the scene where Freddie (Rami Malek) is singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" and sings the line "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all!" and has a slight break because he realizes he just actually said that? Yeah. That's how Medic feels when he first hears the song. But on a lighter note he also likes "Killer Queen" and "I Want To Break Free."

(Went crazy on this one, I really just need to make an entire breakdown on Medic one of these days 😭)

Scout is a Tom Cardy fan. I don't know how to elaborate without just yelling "Mixed Messages" like come on. Also, have you guys heard "H.S" Man he loves that song! Also oops another mini headcanon inside a headcanon, Sniper introduced him to Tom Cardy when he had "Read Between The Lines" playing one day.

Mindless Self Indulgence is a tad self-explanatory but who am I not to explain something in graphic detail? Gives him such confidence and makes him feel so cool. I already headcanon that he loves "Get It Up" so it's only natural that his favorite band made a song he loves. I stand by what others have said. Trans boy swag, well also a mix of that and white boy swag. White trans boy swag makes a Mindless Self Indulgence fan.

Sniper- Honestly? I racked my brain for this one, and I'm going to get silly with this. I'm going to say he likes George Ezra, purely because "Budapest" reminds me so much of him. I think he'd love that song. Another case of putting his emotions into his music or more like, liking music that conveys his emotions? Ough the song just gives me Sniper angst vibes.

Uh controversial opinion, what the frick??? Oingo Boingo fan. Again something I can't but he loved "Dead Man's Party" It's just a song he's always really liked. "No Spill Blood" and "Controller" are also ones he likes. I feel like "weird" music is his favorite genre of music.

I hate to say it but Spy is a fan of Olivia Rodrigo. I'm not going to lie, he's the second most teen girl-coded person on the team. Sings "bad idea right?", "Brutal", and "good 4 you". Sings them in the shower, the other mercs are sick of it 😭

Is it too much to say Mother Mother for the fact that I love Spy angst and can see him crying over "Arms Tonite" and relating to "Verbatim" so hard it's insane? Ugh, I live for Spy angst. I want him to be happy too but it's so easy to put angst😭. (Also I can't stress how much "Wrecking Ball"

Soldier is a sucker for AC/DC. Dad music (I say this with love, I get why people like AC/DC they have good music.)This man is just a criminally insane dad, in my mind anyway. The other mercs have been woken up to "Highway to Hell" once or twice and have let Soldier play "Thunderstruck" as hype music before a battle.

I think he likes Tom Petty, like how are you going to tell me he doesn't love "I Won't Back Down" and "Free Falling" just loves the sound of the music itself (if that makes any sense) more focused on the sounds instead of the actual meaning.

Pyro is a huge fan of Jack Stauber. They adore the music. Enjoys the pop of "There's Something Happening" and loves the slow and sad sounds in "Cupid" Ugh they just love Jack Stauber so much. The only issue they had was when they first listened to "Bumblebees Are Out" it caused a meltdown, poor Pyro was reminded of trauma they forgot. Engie had to calm them down for an hour after. (They're okay, don't worry!)

PYRO IS A JUGGALO 100% I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL. They kick their legs while listening to "Imma Kill U". Listen to "My Axe" and replace any mention of an axe with their flamethrower, in their head. I'm just imagining an AMV or just seeing Pyro walking to "Boogie Woogie Wu" and scaring the shit out of anyone and everyone.

I just thought it would be cool if the line came from a multiracial Morgan Martell.

Mors Martell - Miguel Ángel Silvestre

The coming of the Rhoynar to Dorne is clearly inspired by Moorish Spain so I specifically chose a Spanish actor for Mors.

Nymeria of Ny Sar - Sofia Boutella

Since the inspirations for the Rhoynar are Moorish Spain and Dorne is Palestine, I focused on choose Maghrebi/North African and Palestinian faceclaims for the characters from here onward.

I think Sofia actually looks kinda like some of the drawings for Nymeria as well!

Morra Nymeros Martell - Hiam Abbass

I chose the name Morra because I thought Nymeria would want to name her first born, likely knowing there would be some push back against a woman inheriting, after the father whose seat she’d be taking over.

I also thought Morra would likely be a bit older considering Nymeria lived for so long

Mors II Nymeros Martell - Takfarines Bengana

The Red Princes

We aren’t told why they rule together.

I figured that meant either they were triplets and the oldest decided they should rule together, or that the oldest was sickly and decided to give their siblings ruling power to help cover the gaps they wouldn’t be able to fill as a disabled ruler.

With that in mind, I tried to find people around the same age, and gave them all “M” names because George loves naming conventions like that. I like to believe Myria is the oldest and the disabled one, with Mellei as the leader of her forces and Manfrey as her right hand in Sunspear.

Myria Nymeros Martell - Hafsia Herzei

I completely made this name up

It should be pronounced MY-ree-uh.

I combined the “Ny” sound from Nymeria but with the M from Mors, then added the “ria” because a number of female Dornish names end in “ia.”

Manfrey Nymeros Martell - Rami Malek

There’s a Dornish character named Manfrey, one of Doran’s cousins.

Mellei Nymeros Martell - Nadia Hilker

One of the two servants that Doran assigns to Arianne is named Mellei.

I figured it was likely an old fashioned Dornish name, along with Morra.

'The first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer have dropped following a world premiere in Paris. Following the nearly three-hour screening, critics are praising Cillian Murphy’s performance and calling the film “awe-inspiring,” “staggering” and a “spectacular achievement.”

Total Film editor Matt Maytum said the film left him “stunned” and called Cillian Murphy’s performance “sublime.” “An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow,” he added.

Jonathan Dean of The Sunday Times says he was “totally absorbed” by the film calling it “a dense, talkie, tense film partly about the bomb, mostly about how doomed we are.”

“Murphy is good, but the support essential: Damon, Downey Jr & Ehrenreich even bring gags. An audacious, inventive, complex film to rattle its audience,” Dean added.

One negative point Dean mentioned was that the women in the cast “are badly served” noting “Emily Blunt only once gets out of her stressed mother role.” However, Dean has already ranked Oppenheimer in his top three Nolan films alongside Memento and The Prestige.

Bilge Ebiri of Vulture tweeted, “OPPENHEIMER is…incredible. The word that keeps coming to mind is ‘fearsome.’ A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way.”

Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr called Oppenheimer a “spectacular achievement” saying the story of the film “is a serious, philosophical, adult drama that’s as tense and exciting as Dunkirk. And the big moment – THAT MOMENT – is awe-inspiring.”

Collider’s editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub said the film “is incredible” adding, “Every aspect of the film is worth talking about from the brilliant performances, to #HoytevanHoytema’s amazing work behind the camera, to the way Nolan tells the story. The 3-hour run time flies by. See it in @IMAX 70mm if you can.”

Jeremy Mathai from Slash Film said Oppenheimer was “staggering in every sense of the word.”

“Might sound nuts to say this about a Chris Nolan movie that isn’t INCEPTION, DUNKIRK, or even TENET, but this could be his most formally daring work yet,” he added. “Sharp script, impeccable sound design, and Cillian Murphy is a *force*.”

so i was watching a video on youtube today talking about biopics and i tend to snoop around in the yt comment section (as one does) and i came across a comment talking about how a biopic is (and i’m paraphrasing but) “one of the laziest forms of acting because all you’re doing is imitating someone else and how that’s not real acting” and i just??????? like obviously one of the first things that comes to mind is elvis (2022) and this was more of just a general statement but ESPECIALLY in lieu of that film being one of the most recent biopics this is objectively one of THE worst takes i’ve seen on the internet, and i’m still thinking about the person who said “shiv roy doesn’t experience sexism because she’s rich” because it lives rent free in my head every single day. that aside, and i’m obviously going to use elvis as an example here, but imagine going up to austin butler, a man who was UNIQUELY poised to crash and burn like nobody else (an actor who, while still somewhat established, was still somewhat of a relative unknown compared to actors who typically do biopics such as rami malek, joaquin phoenix, taron egerton etc etc etc) and managed to pull off one of THE most impressive performances in a biopic about one of THE most well-known and influential figures in american history and pop culture, to the point where he out-acted TOM HANKS for crying out loud, imagine going up to this man who spent two years of his life working on this performance and telling him it’s essentially meaningless and “not real acting” because he’s just “imitating someone else” like portraying a real person in a film doesn’t mean anything. not only is it inherently disrespectful to the actor involved, but it’s so fucking reductive as to what it actually means to be cast in a biopic. and yeah, not every biopic is gonna be great or even good, but to say that it doesn’t mean anything because they’re only “imitating someone else” like portraying a real fucking person doesn’t mean anything, that capturing the essence of a very real person isn’t complicated as hell because people are individualistic and have their own little nuances is just. so fucking stupid lmao.

Thoughts on Night at the Museum (2006)

I've got notes to write so I'm going to be watching Night at the Museum (2006) and writing whatever comes to mind.

You'd think with me doing an archaeology and anthropology degree that I'd watched this series of films before - I've seen clips but not the full thing

I know that Owen Wilson is in one of the films in this series

I wish loads of artifacts that currently reside in the British History Museum could be returned to their original place of origin but alas we Brits have a law that states otherwise

I miss Dick Van Dyke - I used to watch Diagnosis: Murder with my family as a kid (my mum loved the show and I definitely had a childhood crush on his irl son who played his son in the show) [I thought he died, apparently not - he's 96]

I hate now they pronounce the name Cecil - it's not See-sil, it's Ses-il

They couldn't have picked such a boring but fitting name for the main character; like Larry??

time in notting hill: forty years

Notting Hill has been all Seth has known his entire life. Born in Egypt, his parents moved to the UK shortly after he turned one, and made the life they always wanted. An only child, Seth grew up somewhere between spoiled and neglected; his mother was an academic who was often too busy to give him her full attention - she was brilliant, but clearly put her job above her family. His father was kind, soft spoken and could be described as doting. He was a house husband, bending to his wife’s every wish.

From a young age, Seth was inspired by his mother, as well as old Indiana Jones movies. He wanted to be both an adventurer and a professor, and after his first trip back to Egypt when he was eight, there was no changing his mind. Immensely curious about his own culture, he devoured book after book, and every year for his birthday, his request was a trip to Egypt.

After Seth graduated high school, he took a few years off, moving to Egypt to really immerse himself in the culture, to learn as much as he could from the source, and when he finally moved back to start college, he was a changed man, for the better. He had a renewed passion and drive for life, and he dove headfirst into his studies.

Getting a job at the university of london was like a dream come true for Seth; something he had worked incredibly hard for, and for a while, he kept to himself, focusing on course outlines and continuing to read as much as he possibly could. That was, until one day, he noticed someone else in the same areas of the library as he was. She was cute, and seemed interested in a lot of the same things Seth was, so finally he managed to pull his nose out of a book long enough to ask her name, and after far longer than Seth realized, they started dating.

Adiya was everything Seth could have asked for - while he didn’t want to admit she was his first girlfriend, he feel for her exceptionally hard, and while he wasn’t in any kind of rush, after a few years of dating, he proposed, wanting to make it clear to her that while neither of them were itching to tie the knot, there was no one else he even wanted to entertain the idea of riding out life together with other than her.

Seth is a notoriously difficult professor; he knows what his students are capable of, and tends to push them just as hard. Outside of the classroom, however, he’s very outgoing and sociable, easy to converse with despite the fact that he tends to give off awkward academic energy - and he is that also, but he love learning about other people and taking in information from new situations too much to be completely isolated from others.

What Most Biopics Do WRONG

Fun fact: at one point there was apparently plans to have Rami Malek cameo as Freddie Mercury in Rocketman, thus creating a rock-musician-biopic cinematic universe (the RMBCU, if you will). With all the biopics getting announced and released in the last several years, I just think that would have been cool.

But we’re not here to talk about cinematic universes that could have been, we’re here to talk about biopics in general. Specifically, biopics focusing on musicians, since I feel like those are the most prevalent—whenever a biopic about a musician gets made, audiences tend to go see it. I imagine they think to themselves, “If nothing else, I know who the artist being portrayed is, and they know they’re gonna hear some good music.”

Am I counted among those people? Yeah, I guess so. I saw Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis in theaters, and (if I remember correctly) rented Rocketman.

I paid money to see all these movies because I’m a cinephile and I try to see most movies that I feel are going to be big topics of conversation within the film community, at least for the few months that they’re in theaters.

But, I don’t really like biopics by and large. And while I wanted Elvis to be a better movie than it was, at the same time I’m glad it has the flaws it does, because I think it contains sort of the best and worst traits of your typical biopic (and thus makes for a perfect focus for this entry).

First things first… Austin Butler is fantastic as Elvis Presley. This isn’t a unique thing to say; of course the people casting a biopic are going to make sure the lead actor is a great fit, otherwise the movie won’t work at all and it won’t be considered during awards season (which, let’s be honest, is half the reason most of these biopics get made). But Austin Butler is a particularly fun choice for me because I still think of him as Jake from Aliens in the Attic, which is a movie I loved as a kid (okay, I still love it) and maybe one other person reading this remembers.

I also liked Tom Hanks in Elvis more than I expected to. Excessive voiceover narration often irks me, but in this case, I liked that the movie had the guts to give us an unreliable narrator. Col. Tom Parker is mostly if not entirely to blame for a lot of what went wrong in Elvis’s life and career, but throughout the movie he is constantly trying to convince himself and us that he’s innocent.

The point is, your typical biopic kind of always comes down to the star of the show, doesn’t it? Obviously, you know deep down that Austin Butler isn’t Elvis Presley (they look kinda similar, but only kinda), but it’s the actor’s job to be so good in the movie, to deliver his lines with sincerity, to hit all the right beats of comedy and drama, that you’re willing to let the physical differences slide and just enjoy the show.

If there’s anything else that measures up to the importance of a good leading man when it comes to biopics, I would say that it's probably set design. Biopics are, by nature, period pieces, so obviously if you don’t buy that the movie is taking place in the Fifties, Sixties, Seventies, or whenever, then it won’t work. Elvis also hits the mark here.

But we need to move beyond this surface-level talk of biopics, because my problem with most of them is that I just don’t think they do a good job of convincing me they deserve to exist. Let’s be honest, whatever you think you might learn about Elvis Presley by watching the movie Elvis could be learned a lot faster by googling him.

Besides, the movie is going to have historical inaccuracies anyway—that’s not a complaint, mind you, I accept and sometimes even welcome historical inaccuracies—but like it or not, that’s a feature of any biopic. The key word in the phrase “based on a true story” is “based.” This is a dramatization of real life and creative liberties have been taken. You’re not here to get the exact truth.

But it’s not really about getting accurate information so much as it’s about how long it takes to get said information. If I wanted to learn about Elvis Presley, it takes seconds to google him and find tons of reliable firsthand and secondhand accounts of who he was and what he was like. Meanwhile, this movie is two hours and thirty-nine minutes long, and any movie that passes the two-hour mark needs to do a better job than Elvis does to convince me it’s worth investing that much time.

The first thirty minutes of Elvis are atrocious. There is not a single scene that lasts more than five minutes. The editing is way too busy—and while that might be Baz Luhrmann’s “style” or whatever, that doesn’t make it invincible to critique. The movie jumps all over the place trying to rush through Elvis’s childhood and early years.

During this first half-hour, the movie also commits what a major sin for a period piece in that it uses contemporary music in a few scenes. As far as I’m concerned, this betrays that the filmmakers were worried young audiences wouldn’t be interested in this movie if they didn’t hear a rap song. This movie is about Elvis-fucking-Presley! If you can’t be confident in the music of Elvis Presley, who’s music can you be confident in?

Now, once the movie actually slows down, takes a minute to breathe, starts exploring Elvis’s life at a more personal level, and lets Austin Butler do what he needs to do, it’s pretty good. But to me that reveals the movie they really wanted to make was about the second half of Elvis’s life. So…why didn’t they just make that movie? Biopics seem desperate to cram as much of their lead character’s lives into two and a half hours as possible, especially when it’s a musician-focused biopic, because it’s just so necessary that we see the first time the young boy heard an inspiring song and equally necessary to see the last time the old man performs on stage for his legion of fans.

It is impossible to tell someone’s life story in two and a half hours. Why are we still trying? Filmmakers who find themselves in the unique position of getting to construct a biopic should pick out what they find interesting about the person in question, and focus only on that. I think this would do wonders for making biopics seem less cookie cutter in the way that Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story was so right to make fun of.

In the end, I did give Elvis a ‘W,’ because like I said, the second half of the movie is really good—in fact, I think it’s better than both the aforementioned Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. I just wish the average biopic felt like there was more care put into it and had a goal beyond selling old music inside a new album and getting people talking about who’s gonna be nominated for Best Actor next awards season.

So, if you haven’t yet seen Elvis, and you’d like my honest opinion…watch it, but consider trying to watch it at an early bird ticket price, or maybe even waiting for it to come on streaming. I predict there are more exciting, must-see titles awaiting us as the summer rolls on.
