I don't know how strictly accurate this is, but one of the things I find shocking about watching historical dramas is how many people there are around all the time---according to Madame de... (1953) a well-off French household in the Belle Epoque maintains a workforce of at least 3, and the glittering opera has staff just to open doors. According to Shogun (2024) you can expect a deep bench just to mind your household, and again, people who exist to open doors.

Could people....not open doors in the past? Were doors tricky, before the standardization of hinges? Because otherwise, the wealthy used to pay a whole bunch of people to do it for them in multiple contexts, and I find myself baffled.

if sasuke was the main character then he probably would've been a LOT more sympathised with than he is now (which is to say rarely). like the narrative wouldn't even need to change to show his pains or 'his side of the story', bc it does that plenty. it's just that he is not the main character. and idk what it is about our human minds but we tend to sympathise with main characters automatically (unless ofc you go off the rockers insane and do something like obliterate almost everyone from the planet *cough* eren yeager *cough*)

an instance that comes to my mind where this does happen is with lelouch from code geass. while i don't agree with his character motivations, people generally do sympathise with him as he is the mc and as viewers we know he isn't inherently evil. sasuke's goal towards the end is slightly similar but ofc people love to hate him so they don't even try to understand where he is coming from.

my point is, most people while engaging with the naruto story don't read between the lines and so don't see how traumatised and in pain sasuke is and hence don't understand his character motivations. heck, they don't understand a single bit about him and so they automatically hate him, as he is supposedly going against the main character's goals.

which is really sad given all that he has been through.

do you think mbj acted super mean/cruel when sqh had to run away from the sect to make them feel bad? like, he treats him like this but at least sqh knows he'll LIVE. the bar is in the ground and yet you lot are playing limbo with the devil. he says jump, qinghua says how high. he says to get this impossible cure or object, sqh says when by. and when faced with endless pain and thankless work, he'll still chose mobei-jun because qinghua knows that he can stay alive even under his thumb.

I think Mobei Jun acted mean for a multitude of reasons. He definitely knows though that the sect is absolutely pushing Qinghua to his limits and while Mobei is as well to a degree he's trying to be more aware of it, maybe, at least definitely towards the end of the book.

Sometimes I think Dan and Phil are totally platonic besties and then other times I’m convinced they fuck on the daily. I think they do it on purpose and it’s honestly iconic.

kind of the best thing is that they are that and everything in between. you can tell they just like being around each other. they've made content together for 15 years and the large majority of it was done in the strictly platonic sense for their audience. and they were still having so much fun with it. we're in the 'we know you know' era now so we get to see flashes of different dynamics they have, but they absolutely have more we Don't get to see bc they're not for us.

they like each other. stupidly fond of each other. spending time together doesn't feel exhausting. they're best friends and each others' harshest critics while being the biggest hypeman and also safe space.

dnp's relationship with us, their audience, always has been and always will be different than any other content creators. part of it is how they accumulated it, but another part is just the massive history we have with them. they Get us. they Know us. they're silly goofy sarcastic guys who love us and hate us sometimes. theyre grateful but careful too. they like to rile us up, just like they do each other. it's a love language, teasing, and we've shown positive responses to it over the years. i like to say that my relationship with dnp is antagonistic sometimes--cause i know they're pushing my buttons on purpose. and ykw? it's fun! it's fun for us and it's fun for them because they have the control. i know anything they let out is cause they chose to let it out because they Know how we are. so yes they absolutely adore messing with us. we're a funny bunch.

The relationship started a bit rocky in all honesty. Him being a mershark and thus confined to water made it difficult for him to visit you. And it wasn't like he could live in a pool in your backyard or your shower or bath

But other than that, it was pretty okay all things considered

You'd visit him when you can, have little 'dates' where he'd show you a cool cave he found or some other hidden area

But, if you live on or near a beach, it makes things easier distance wise. Expect to find Gaz on one of the shore rocks waiting for you in the early morning either way

Once you find him, he gives you a gift! Like a cool seashell or maybe a pearl. You most likely have a jar or a drawer filled with the things he brought you due to him bring you gifts every other day

He's anxious giving you things because he fears they might not be good enough please tell him you love the gifts

He's like a dog when it comes to the back of his ears getting scratched. He enjoys the small bit of affection. It normally ends up with him nipping/biting at your hand though ^^"

Actually scratch that. He likes trying to bite or nip at you regardless of what you were doing before hand

But He'll keep apologizing to you if he accidentally clamped down too hard and hurt you!! He doesn't mean to hurt you, he just forgets his own strength sometimes

He once crawled out of the sea just to tackle hug you once he spotted you walking towards him

Think like that one stereotype where the dog owner comes home and the dog runs up to them at the door and tackles them to the ground. That's basically what Gaz did

sorry i'm thinking abt megumi's incessant desire to be the first to die vs. the narrative keeping him alive despite and how the most tragic ending for him is not actually dying, but being left behind. for megumi, the worst fate is living a long life

actually. the specific phrasing that boy Kevin wants to kill older Kevin with "I must disassemble him, piece by piece, so that everything inside of the Old Kevin comes out. Only then can the New Kevin truly begin." is so incredibly the idea that to heal from trauma and "improve" you have to destroy every "wrong" part of yourself, that everything "tainted" by it has to somehow be replaced by something untouched (which isn't possible)

#reading back that phrasing I do think that'll be the way brinknor takes it #this arcs seeming like it'll be so. breaking the cycle of abuse and violence and coming to terms with yourself #and maybe understanding that you can never remove the parts of you impacted by trauma and start again completely ''pure'' #but you can treat yourself with the kindness you should've been given #which i hope it is that because. and understand i am biased. but i'd love that direction for Kevin #it feels much more satisfying than any more. angsty way this arc could go imo #like he's been through enough! #because of the way Kevin is portrayed in fanon. not as frequently anymore but still pretty common.
