I have one superpower and it’s the ability to take one look at a canon or fandom and instantly identify whatever male character people are most likely to complain about fans of/complain is overly woobified/complain is too popular with fangirls/etc. I don’t even need to know anything about the actual fandom - I can call which character will have the most of this specific flavor of “he’s overly woobified and problematic and gets too much attention that should go to [more deserving character] and fangirls like him for the wrong reasons” wank about them based on vibes alone.
It’s that one. The antagonist/antihero/woobie villain/arrogant one/traitor/con man/assassin/one that definitely isn’t a cinnamon roll. The one who has half the fandom craving a redemption arc for him and the other half spitting pure vitriol at the thought of him getting a redemption arc. The one my deepest inner teenager instantly wanted to read a hundred thousand words worth of whump fic about. You know. That one.
I think of it as the Spike-from-Buffy effect, named after the first example I encountered in the wild. (See also Tony Stark from all continuities and MCU Loki. And Anders. And every leather-clad bad boy and woobified villain or angsty vampire ever and half a dozen different white-haired anime dudes with red eyes)

Always that subtle, subconscious truth, that sexism/misogyny/patriarchy/fratriarchy, speaking from a perspective of self-interest, is a shortcut to romantic love and vulnerability. It holds up a dark mirror and tries to make you believe it's the same thing, so in some cases, in a lot of poisonous cases, you're left with emotionally stymied men who think love is transactional and something owed to them and if not, taken by force, and women sold the ideal of romantic love to settle for a cold facsimile.
I'm generalising; I don't really believe this is true of everyone because I don't think that's how social systems work. But I do think that when it comes to romance in narrative, or anons telling me that the male loneliness epidemic is women's fault and not the social fracture of masculine communities (read: by 'loneliness epidemic' they really mean something else; see above), there is this constant tension between what a lot of people think romance ought to be (transactional) - some who'd reject it for that reason - and some of us who believe in true love, which I think is my task in life, because I do believe that there is a vulnerability in love possible which is not transactional. And it pains me that so many don't see it this way.
But this is why I think that romantic love can be transformative, and not compromising, from a feminist perspective in narrative, including for male characters lol. Because ultimately if you want to hold up an inhuman system you are made inhuman by that system and that is why I think that spiritual death (or the sickness unto death/existential death) is at the heart of misogyny, misogynoir, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and so on.
