Rent-A-Girlfriend
Part 2: Hanayama Kaoru
Tumblr media
Yandere Baki Various x Afab Reader
Part 1
Part 3
…………………………………………..………………….
Kaoru was frustrated that his recent fling bailed on him for this important dinner with his peers. Kaoru could never keep a girlfriend for more than a month. Each one claimed he was too rough or too cold towards them.
Yet they all came to him for the same reason. For his money and to be in his bed. It’s not his fault none of them truly caught his interest. None of them were the type he would let stay by his side anyways. They were nothing more to him than bed warmers and limited eye candy.
But this dinner was important. He needed to keep up his status among the other yakuza and what better way to do that than to have a beautiful woman by his side?
Kaoru lit a cigar, inhaling the smoke deep into his lungs before exhaling. Women were too stressful.
“Maybe you should try a rental girlfriend for the night?” Kizaki piped up from the door way. Kaoru slowly turned his head around to glance at his right hand man. That wasn’t such a bad idea.
Kaoru pulled out his phone and uploaded the app. He made himself a simple account and didn’t even bother to add a profile picture. Kaoru was positive most women knew who he was. His fingers scrolling through each available ‘girlfriend.’ His fingers stopped once he came upon an exotic looking young woman. A foreigner? How delightful. She would surely impress his comrades.
Kaoru quickly requested a date with her, his eyes widening when he saw that he can send her instructions on how to behave at the date and there were options to send her clothes. A small smile on his face as he typed the requirements to be his company.
Kaoru was thrilled that a woman was finally down to comply to his demands…
.
.
.
Friday rolled around and (Your name) made her way to the post office first thing in the morning to get the dress her date had bought for her.
She loved that her job supplied her with a PO Box so her dates didn’t know her address. Plus they had a strict code of rules. The customers were not allowed to kiss or touch her inappropriately or they’d be banned. It was an incredibly progressive company.
(Your name) was impressed by the long black gift box her date supplied for her. It seems he was a man of money.
A white envelope caught her eye. She quickly opened it and read the neatly written note.
“𝑀𝑒𝑒𝓉 𝓂𝑒 𝑜𝓃 𝓍𝓍𝓍 𝓈𝓉𝓇𝑒𝑒𝓉 𝒶𝓉 𝟧𝓅𝓂. 𝒟𝑜 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒷𝑒 𝓁𝒶𝓉𝑒.”
What a lovely gentleman, she sarcastically thought. He seemed to be incredibly dominant and have high expectations.
(Your name) opened her phone and scrolled through the app. Kaoru didn’t want her to speak at all. She was strictly to be arm candy only and she was fine with that. She honestly preferred not speaking to a man like this.
She gathered her dress and made her way back home. (Your name) would be sure to follow all of his demands. Maybe she’d earn even more money if she played the part of a subservient woman to him?
.
.
.
(Your name) had to admit that Kaoru had amazing tastes in clothing. The dress hugged her figure and left her back completely exposed. The red silk made her feel like a neatly wrapped present.
She chose to do an elegant style of makeup and to make sure he hair fit the description of a high class woman. (Your name) needed to impress him and his peers. She would not disappoint him.
She arrived to the meeting spot at 4:50pm. Giving her a ten minute window before he was to arrive.
A black limousine pulled up beside her not even two minutes later. A tall muscular man in a black and red suit stepped out, his entire face covered in scars. His presence itself was incredibly intimidating, it didn’t take her long to figure he was someone who was dangerous.
“You’re even prettier in person.” Kaoru complimented her softly before holding out a hand for her to take so he could help her into the limousine. She gave him a small smile and a slight bow in thanks. She wasn’t sure if he had given her permission to speak.
(Your name) accepted his hand as she lifted up a bit of the skirt of her dress to get into the limousine. She could feel Kaoru’s eyes burning into her as she maintained an elegant composure around him. Was he waiting for her to slip up?
(Your name) sat in the limousine and adjusted her dress. She made sure not a single wrinkle could be seen.
Kaoru sat in front of her. He was impressed. (Your name) was certainly a high class lady with outstanding elegance. There wasn’t a wrinkle nor a single hair out of place on her. So far, she has exceeded his expectations of a date.
“So far you’ve exceeded my expectations.” Kaoru muttered as he held her small hand in his, rubbing his thumb over the soft skin on the back of her hand. She even had a charming French tip nail. Classic yet elegant. He really liked her.
The two of them arrive to the restaurant. Kaoru getting out of the limousine first to hold the door open for her. Kaoru extended his hand out for her to take to help her step out of the car. His dark eyes admiring her form. She was more than what he hoped for…
Kaoru basked in the attention of his peers who paused their conversations to admire the woman on his arm. Kaoru adored how the stares at him in envy… he’d book her again for sure just from this alone.
(Your name) didn’t utter a word. She held her head high and looked forward. Her arm wrapped around Kaoru’s forearm as he lead her to the head of the table. The scarred man pulling a chair out next to him for her to sit.
(Your name) obediently sat in the chair, her body facing his slightly as he sat down. Something about him screamed possessive so she’d be sure not to trigger that.
She stayed silent the entirety of the dinner, ignoring the glances of his peers. Kaoru smirked into his glass of sake. He adored her attention on him.
Kaoru held her hand to get the stares of his peers to stop. He needed to establish that she was his lady in front of the others and he wouldn’t stand for their ogling all night.
It felt like hours until the dinner ended. (Your name) didn’t speak to anyone nor did she acknowledge anyone other than Kaoru. Kaoru seemed thrilled about this fact.
The scarred man lead her back to his limousine and helped her back into the car in the same fashion as earlier. The door clicking shut behind him as he sat across from her. His dark eyes gazing into her very soul but she didn’t dare to speak.
“You did well tonight.” Kaoru complimented her before scooping her hand up in his to press a kiss to the back of it. “Better than I had thought… I may book you again.”
Kaoru chuckled when she smiled at him. His interest was piqued. She was asking him for permission to speak with just her eyes… what a marvelous woman. “You can speak. I haven’t heard your voice all night.”
“Thank you, sir.” Kaoru shivered a bit at the nickname, his hands tightly grasping the fabric of his pants when she bowed her head to him a bit. Perfect… she was perfect. “I just followed your orders, sir.”
Kaoru leaned forward and held her jaw in his hand, his obsidian eyes gazing deeply into hers.
“I will seek you out again.” Kaoru huskily whispered before releasing her. He leaned back in his seat and pulled out a cigar from his suit jacket. “Do you smoke?”
“I don’t, but thank you for the offer, sir.” (Your name) smiled politely at him, the scarred man humming in response.
“I appreciate your honesty.” Kaoru lit his cigar before blowing the smoke off to the side. “How much for a night with you?”
(Your name) paled a bit at the question before giving him a bow. “That is another thing I don’t do. It’s against my contract with my company, sir.”
This was the first time someone close to her in age asked for a night with her but she wasn’t interested in those sorts of activities. At least not with someone so dangerous looking. He was more than likely a gangster.
Kaoru sighed but he nodded in response. “Polite even when you decline me. I’ve never been rejected before. Do you even know who I am?”
(Your name) gave him another polite smile. “I hope you’re not offended that I do not know who you are, sir.”
Kaoru felt a surge of excitement course through him. This was the first woman he met that didn’t know who he was and wasn’t after his money nor his title… he decided there and now that was going to keep seeing her. She interested him.
“Not at all…” Kaoru almost told her how much it thrilled him but he didn’t want to scare her off. He never wanted to scare off a potential new play thing.
Kaoru’s driver dropped her off on the street he picked her up on. The man really wanted to take her to her house but she wouldn’t tell him her address… a shame. He’d spoil her if she told him.
As soon as (Your name) bowed to him and left the vehicle, Kaoru turned to the driver, Kizaki.
“I want all the information you can get on her.” Kaoru told Kizaki.
“Right away, sir.”
Kaoru put his thumb on his lip as he smirked to himself. He had to have her… he had to have the very best and he would have a night with (your full name)… one way or another.
(Your name) made her way into her house, her phone vibrating in her pocket. She opened up the light, pastel pink screen with a whistle.
𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐮 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝟓𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐭𝐢𝐩! 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨!
𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞!
𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭?
𝐘𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨?
“And he paid me twice the amount just for this night… I wonder who he is.” (Your name) thought for a minute before accepting the date. Her phone lighting up again with a new notification.
!! 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 !!
𝐎𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐢 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐢 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧! 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞!
𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭?
𝐘𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨?
Oh! A family dinner? Someone must’ve lied about having a girlfriend…
(Your name) laughs before happily accepting the offer. She wasn’t going to let some other broad take her money opportunity. She skimmed over the details. Dang… this guy was in dire need for a girl to pretend to be his partner for an entire afternoon in front of his family.
“Your misfortune is my gain…” (your name) whispered as she started to slip out of the silk dress. It seems she’d have to play the part do being a sweet girl who absolutely adored her boyfriend…
Sometimes her job was a headache because she had to pretend to be so many different people. The pay was certainly worth it all though. She’d pretend to be anyone her clients wanted so long as they paid her for her valuable time.
(Your name) scrolled through Katsumi’s profile with a hum. He was a cutie. He seemed to be the typical ‘boy next door.’ He was active in the community so she was going to have to be careful in case anyone recognized her…
(Your name) took a glance at her reflection in the mirror. She was going to have to look soft and extremely feminine tomorrow… that seemed to be Katsumi’s type. The innocent doe character…
She sighed before going to her fridge and cracking open a beer. She just had a few more months of this contract with the company and then she could stop going on dates. It was exhausting pretending to be interested in all these men.
(Your name) took a sip of the beer with a smile. She wondered where she’d move next after all of this was over… maybe she’d go back to the States?

Can’t believe how good this show has got, I’m literally crying over a kanokari episode never thought I’d see the day 😭 Sayuri Obaa-chan rest in peace.
Tumblr media
27 eps of being a meme and then these last few are just so damn good and compelling. Chizuru’s final moments with her grandmother were so gut wrenching. “I don’t know what to do anymore” 😢 just broke my heart.
Tumblr media
Said last week that it should be Chizuru’s decision as to whether or not she wants to be honest about she and Kazuya relationship and ultimately she decided to just enjoy the last few moments she had with her grandmother. I feel like deep down her grandma probably already knew the truth anyway or had some idea. Either way, actresses are supposed to make lies a reality so I think it’s thematically consistent with the story. Even if it’s a lie now, the idea is that she and Kazuya will eventually be legit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Kazuya, brilliant idea to go grab the projector and play the film. Even if only for a moment, Sayuri obaa-chan did get to see her granddaughter fulfil her dream as an actress. Very good quick thinking by Kazuya. Again showcasing how reliable he’s become of late.
Tumblr media
As of today I can say I not only no longer hate Chizuru, but that I really like her. It took 30 eps but it finally clicked with me during that wonderful performance by Amamiya Sora. Phenomenal job of conveying the emotion and gravity of that moment. Definitely appreciate Chizuru’s personality, her work ethic and character a lot more because of this season. The reasons Kazuya likes her are no longer shallow and generic to me.
Tumblr media
I still have Mami top, but Chizuru is good as well now 👍

So Mother’s Basement just posted a video about Rent-a-Girlfriend, and tbh I’m getting kind of annoyed by how much this series is getting hated on- I haven’t read the manga fully, but I originally watched Degenerocity’s video “The Rent-a-Girlfriend (manga) is Terrible Garbage” and that was where I first learned about the infamous NTR chapter and how people hated it. I read it and then jumped to read the more recent chapters with the reveal finally occurring (since in Degenerocity’s video a big complaint was how the manga continued to not develop and push off the reveal forever). A few days ago, I saw Mother’s Basement talking about the manga on Twitter, and figured he would be dropping a video soon regarding it, and it really upsets me to see him turn around on this series since I remember he had made a video on it during its first season about the history of rental services like girlfriends and sisters and how they help shut ins.
I’ll eventually watch his new video roasting the series, and likely need to fully read the manga so I can give a “proper informed” opinion on it, but it’s just disappointing to hear everyone dunk on the series and hate Kazuya and treat him as an incel for things because- a lot of the time I find the series realistic because of those aspects? I understand why people can find Kazuya unlikable and that they can find the story no longer for them because of that, but I don’t think the entire narrative should be written off. I’ve seen comments of people saying they feel bad for the women in the story because they’re in this story of all things, and that also just, feels a little excessive of a thing to say? It’s like the opposite extreme of people saying that disliking Mami because she’s a villain makes you inherently bad because Mami being a villain means she’s a girlboss and we should like her regardless (meaning that because she’s a female villain it is WRONG to dislike her because if you do so then you just hate women). There’s just a LOT OF complex things regarding the majority opinion on this series and it just really annoys me to see another creator jump on the bandwagon of hating the series completely.

Girlfriend Rental in Singapore: An Overview of an Unconventional Social Trend
In recent years, Singapore has seen the emergence of a unique and somewhat controversial service: Girlfriend Rental in Singapore. This phenomenon, not unique to Singapore but gaining visibility there, offers individuals the opportunity to hire companions for various social engagements, events, or personal companionship. This service, which blurs the lines between social convenience and ethical considerations, has sparked a plethora of discussions on its implications for society, individual relationships, and the traditional understanding of companionship.
The concept of renting a girlfriend is relatively straightforward. Through various platforms, usually online agencies or apps, individuals can hire someone to act as a partner for a predetermined period. These rented girlfriends accompany their clients to social gatherings, family events, or even provide emotional support during times of loneliness. The services are strictly platonic, with clear boundaries set from the outset to avoid any misunderstandings or legal issues.
The rise of girlfriend rental services in Singapore can be attributed to several factors. First, the pressures of a fast-paced society have left many, particularly the younger generation, with little time to invest in traditional dating or building relationships. Moreover, the societal pressure to present a façade of being in a successful relationship can drive individuals towards these services. Additionally, the stigma associated with using dating apps or the fear of rejection makes the straightforward nature of girlfriend rental an appealing option for some.
Critics of the girlfriend rental trend raise several concerns. Ethically, it muddles the line between genuine interpersonal relationships and transactional interactions. There is a fear that these services commodify affection and could potentially undermine the value of organic relationships. Psychologically, there is concern about the long-term impact on both the clients and the rented girlfriends, including issues related to attachment, self-esteem, and the understanding of genuine intimacy.
On the other hand, proponents argue that girlfriend rental services can serve as a harmless solution to loneliness and social pressure. They emphasize the consensual nature of the service and the clear boundaries set by both parties. For some, these services provide a much-needed boost to self-esteem and social standing, offering a temporary reprieve from the pressures of societal expectations.
Furthermore, the industry has implemented several measures to ensure the safety and welfare of both parties involved. Agencies often conduct thorough background checks, provide guidelines and training for the rented girlfriends, and establish strict policies to prevent any form of exploitation.
The girlfriend rental trend in Singapore also opens up discussions on the evolving nature of relationships in modern society. It prompts questions about the definition of companionship, the importance of physical presence versus emotional connection, and the future of interpersonal relationships in an increasingly digital and transactional world.
As Singapore continues to grapple with the implications of this trend, it is essential to consider the broader societal and individual impacts. The rise of girlfriend rental services reflects deeper issues related to loneliness, social expectations, and the changing landscape of human connections. It calls for a balanced discourse that considers the ethical, psychological, and social dimensions of this phenomenon.

Rent-A-Girlfriend
Part 4: Baki Hanma/ Jack Hanma (2)
Tumblr media
Yandere Various Baki x Afab reader
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 5
………………………………………
So sorry that I am only doing Jack, Kaoru, Katsumi, and Baki. But you guys are getting, you guessed it! Jun Guevara!
All characters are aged up FYI! They are in their 20s.
……………………………………..
(Your name) laid on her stomach on her bed. A fluffy white towel wrapped around her head while she kicked her feet and giggled. Katsumi was such a cutie. It’s been awhile since she was genuinely interested in a man…
Momo sat up and stretched her arms above her head with a yawn. She needed to start getting around for this date with Jack. She had almost forgotten about the blonde since she’s been so into Katsumi.
But she had graciously accepted Jack’s date before talking to Katsumi… maybe she should tell the karateka about her next three jobs? No… that wouldn’t be right to do. It’s not like they were official or had a title yet. Necessarily she was a single woman on a rental dating site still.
(Your name) got around for the date. She decided to wear a patterned blouse and jeans. Her app said Jack had set up a date at a cafe so there was no need for a dress today.
(Your name) styled her hair and made her way to the train station unaware of the black limousine sitting outside of her apartment complex. A certain yakuza watching her leave in interest.
“Follow her.” Kaoru told Kizaki who sighed. It was a bit unusual for someone of Kaoru’s caliber to be so interested in a woman like this before… perhaps he’s just going through a phase right now?
Kaoru lit a cigar and took a long drag. Kizaki wasn’t able to find much on her at all. Just a name, adress, and a clean record. She had no social media… she had to be hiding something and he was going to figure it out.
“Just who are you, (your name)?” Kaoru muttered to himself.
.
.
.
(Your name) smiled when she saw Jack was patiently waiting for her at the cozy little cafe. Poor guy looked so out of place with his large body crammed at such a small table. From the way he was sitting, he must have been waiting for awhile. Was he excited to see her? How endearing.
Now that she thought of it, how did he find clothes that even fit him? Did he have a personal tailor? She didn’t think it was humanly possible for someone to be as massive as him.
(Your name) shook her head. She wasn’t going to question the logic of Jack’s existence. She was here to get paid and then go home.
(Your name) opened the door and smiled at Jack. The blonde perking up a bit when she walked in just like a German shepherd… that was a little mean to think that. She shouldn’t compare the man to a big ‘scary’ dog.
“Hello, darling.” (Your name) approached him and pressed her lips to his cheek. The blonde blushing at the touch. “Were you waiting long?”
“No…” (Your name) tried not to giggle at how awkward Jack was. It was endearing that a man as large as him had no experience with women. A shame as well. Man was probably well endowed- dirty thought! Shake your head clear of those dirty thoughts, (your name).
Jack noticed her blush and felt his heart flutter. Perhaps she had an inkling of his attraction to her? Or that he was still a virgin… He wasn’t too obvious… was he?
(Your name) sat in front of Jack. Her (eye color) eyes scanning the menu in interest. She didn’t think he would pick such a tasteful cafe with paninis. Jack didn’t look like the kind of guy who would eat a panini.
“Have you been here before?” Momo asks him with a smile.
“… no.” Jack admitted. Should he admit he googled popular date ideas? Would she think less of him?
“I think you picked a good spot. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a panini.” (Your name) smiled at him. He googled this spot just to take her out on a date… that is so cute. “You’re surprisingly thoughtful.”
Jack hummed. He was only able to rent her for a few hours today so he was going to make the most of it. He wished he could spend more time with her… wait. What was he thinking? They just met.
“I’m trying.” Jack mutters softly. “I don’t have much experience with dating…”
(Your name) took two of his thick fingers in her hand and gave them a reassuring squeeze.
“That’s what I’m here for…” She gave him a bright smile, causing his knees to go weak and his palms to sweat. Jack averted his gaze, his heart drumming rapidly in his chest. “You’re doing well so far.”
Jack wasn’t used to praise… but he liked it. Jack enjoyed being praised like this. It made him feel special.
The two shared light banter and conversation. (Your name) was happy that the blonde was opening up to her more and more. He looked more approachable when he relaxed. Not to mention how hilarious it was to watch him try to eat a piping hot panini in one bite. Jack was surprisingly fun to spend time with… but perhaps it was because she thought of him to be similar to a dog?
The way he had his utmost attention on her and anything she did was interesting to her. She hasn’t had a man look at her like she was a god in a long time…
Sadly, she only had five minutes left with him…
“Our time is almost up…” (your name) softly whispered, Jack furrowing his brow. He hadn’t realized how much time had passed.
(Your name) tried not to chuckle at how disappointed he looked. It was nice to see him expressing his emotions a bit better. It made the monstrous man more human in her eyes.
Jack stood up and helped her out of her chair. The two walking side by side out of the cafe together. His entire hand engulfed hers, the calloused skin from tears of fighting felt rough against the soft skin of her hands.
“I had a great time today, Jack.” (Your name) smiled warmly at the giant man. She was being genuine. Jack was comfortable to be around, she felt incredibly safe with him.
Jack stopped walking, his body bending down with a snap. (Your name)’s eyes wide in shock when she felt slightly chapped lips briefly touch her cheek. It was quick and fleeting, like a butterfly landing on a flower. But it wasn’t opposed.
“I wanted to do that all day…” Jack muttered under his breath. The blonde turning his head to try to hide his red cheeks. That was so cute… how could he be cute?
(Your name) touched the spot his lips touched before smiling at him. “Well… I enjoyed it. Didn’t think you’d be the sweet type.”
(Your name) takes his massive hand up to her lips and presses a soft kiss to his scarred knuckles. Jack shivered in response, his breathing rapid. He felt like he was going to fall over and die from how fast his heart beat in his chest.
“Thank you for today, Jack. Have a good rest of your day today, Jack.” (Your name) waved good bye to Jack. The blonde biting his lip before speaking again.
“I want to try to see you again soon…” Jack said, the giant man shoving his hands in his pockets to try to stop himself from saying anything embarrassing. “Have a good day, (your name).”
Jack then turned on his heel to walk off but not before noticing a black limo across the street. Jack narrowing his brown eyes before shaking his head.
There was no way someone would be following (your name) around, right? She couldn’t possibly have gotten herself tangled in anything dangerous…
Jack narrowed his gaze when he saw a flash of Hanayama’s face from the limousine’s window when it drove past him. Just what was that yakuza up to now?
.
.
.
𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝟓 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠! 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐲!
𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐦𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧!
(Your name) smiled at the pastel pink screen on her phone. Her ratings have been going up as of late so she’s been getting more date requests. Business was booming, baby.
(Your name) then exited the screen to see if she had any missed messages and oh boy there were at least fifteen missed messages from Katsumi. She was barely with Jack for three hours and she missed this many messages? That was insane.
Oh. That made sense. She forgot to tell Katsumi she was on a job.
She quickly shot Katsumi a message and apologized for not getting back to him. Poor guy.
She was amazed at the instant reply.
‘That’s okay! Sorry, I just became a little anxious there. I just get so nervous around pretty girls like you is all. :)’
What a goober. Katsumi was lucky he was so cute because she didn’t particularly like clingy men.
‘I should have told you. That’s on me, haha.’
(Your name) smiled. Katsumi seemed like such a sweet guy… it really made her wonder why he was on the market… oh well. He wouldn’t be for long if things continued to work out between them.
The young woman made her way into the bathroom. Her phone buzzing with a new text message notification.
‘You can never do anything wrong in my eyes. Can we call each other in a bit? I miss your voice.’
The roots were starting to form from this seed, poor girl had no idea what she just planted into her life.
.
.
.
Monday rolled around faster than she thought. She was interested in this Baki character. She wondered how he’d be… she went with her another softer look. Most of the men she wants on dates with seemed to like soft, demure girls and she would pretend to be anyone for some extra pocket cash.
She made her way towards the park, a young man with shoulder length red hair standing out like a sore thumb. He was pretty… surprisingly pretty. Almost like a girl.
The closer she was, the slightly more masculine he became. Baki wasn’t particularly tall but he did have a nice build to him.
Baki was currently lost in his own thoughts. The young man leaning back to sigh. Ever since his breakup with Kozue, he’s been a bit empty. It’s been rough getting back out on the dating field as of late.
Turns out a lot of people don’t want to date an underground fighter of his prestige. His life was too dangerous for love or civilian friends. It was upsetting to him to say the least. He tried dating in his age range but he decided to just hire a girlfriend for the day to test out an older woman.
Baki was hardly given a chance before he’d be ghosted. It’s been the same pattern for the last two years. One or two dates and then silence. It was stressful to him.
(Your name) smiled warmly once Baki turned his head to look at her. His brown eyes wide in shock at the young woman who stood before him. He didn’t think she’d be so pretty…
“Hello. Baki, right?” Oh lord… the way his name rolled off her tongue had him feeling like a teenager again.
“Yes. My name is Baki.” Baki held his hand out to her. “It’s nice to finally meet you.”

prompt: forced throuple au; Ghost decides that you and Johnny are his (part 5; ghoap x reader) part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4
-
Give him blood and he’ll give you something new to chew on.
Except that isn’t the way it goes. Not this time at least.
He tries to talk Ghost out of it, but it falls on deaf ears. Blatantly ignored. The car barrels down the motorway under the cloak of night, a swell of stars overhead as the city falls farther behind. Radio shut off. Johnny thinks if Ghost had his way, the radio would’ve been pulled out entirely, just wires and an empty, black cavity in the dashboard, but it’s a rental.
And no one wants to deal with the paperwork involved in damaging military property. Not even Ghost.
Ghost won’t so much as glance over at him. Unaffected as ever, as if they didn’t just fuck. Johnny’s stomach hurts when he thinks about it. Even without her knowing, he’s broken his girl’s trust. Not for the first time; maybe not even the last. His guilt echoes not only that he let Ghost make him come, but that he liked it—that the buzz in his bones says do it again, please god, again, please let me come, I need to come, touch me, please—
He thinks about his girl, then turns to Ghost again.
In the pit of his stomach, Johnny knows this is wrong. In his rational mind, he knows it. If he were in a better place, he wants to think that he’d make a real attempt to change Ghost’s mind, maybe get him to turn around at the next gas station, but he can’t deny the excitement bubbling in his belly at the prospect of seeing his girl again after a week of nothing.
The silence has been eating away at him. Bits of his brain flaking away, moth-eaten. Checking his phone again and again to no new messages, getting the same voicemail message whenever he calls. Something flutters high in his chest, an itch he can’t scratch; it tells him to take off in the middle of the night, drive all the way back home and pound on her door until she’s forced to answer it, forced to talk to him face to face.
Again and again, he tries looking at it from her perspective—tries to empathize with her. What he would’ve done in her shoes had she allowed a coworker to grab his dick in front of a crowd of strangers. It’s more than fair, he thinks. His own shame leaks out of his pores in the middle of the night, sleeping on top of the covers because he sweats right through the sheets.
And yet, he keeps butting up against his own anger. Talk it out with me, yell at me, he growls into her voicemail, anger growing as the days pass one by one.
It’s the road that alerts him to their arrival into the city more than anything. More cracks in the asphalt, the car rattling over sewer depressions and potholes in a way that says home sweet home. Usually it’s a source of comfort, like seeing the silver lining on grey clouds or the iridescence in an oil spill, purples and greens catching the light. Not now. Now the road winds like descending into the underworld, each turn coming with a sinking feeling.
They park down the road from the flower shop, tucked just out of sight. A cool breeze wafts over his hot face when he steps out of the car. It nearly rocks him back. When he glances up, his heart stutters at the sight of her bedroom window, sealed tight now. Only cracked open during their sleepovers, when Johnny runs a bit too hot at night for them to sleep comfortably with the window closed.
“Should I…do ye want me to give her a call to wake her up?” Johnny asks tentatively, shutting the car door softly so as not to make a noise.
Ghost shakes his head. “We’ll let ourselves in.”
Johnny’s picked hundreds of locks in his time; he’s jimmied open doors with crowbars, set up explosive charges, used a good old fashioned ram from time to time—no stranger to the trade—but it feels decidedly uncomfortable with Ghost at his back, staring down at him as he breaks into his own girlfriend’s apartment.
“This is a bad idea,” he grumbles, turning the pick in the lock until he hears a familiar click inside.
Ghost doesn’t answer, just raps his knuckles against the back of Johnny’s head. A silent get a move on.
Her apartment looks the same but different when they enter it. His muscles remember the layout though. The pink couch in the living room with two dimpled pillows on either side, the footstool by the door, the stand with her shoes all piled in neat little rows, the vase on her kitchen island with a fresh new bundle of flowers, fragrant when he dips his head to take a whiff. He’s loved flowers ever since meeting his girl.
Ghost doesn’t try to muffle his footsteps for once. He rummages through her cabinets and drawers with all the finesse of a first time burglar looking to get caught. It smacks of intentionality. Johnny’s worked with him too many times in the field to know that if Ghost wanted to disappear into the darkness, he would. He’d be the thing creeping silently through the shadows, tread lighter than air, close enough to touch but never see.
So it’s more than deliberate when he noisily shuts a drawer. Baiting her out.
It’s no surprise when Johnny hears her creep around the corner from out of her bedroom. He’s tucked in the shadows of the living room, just out of the light, so he sees her first when she comes silently down the hall, whole body trembling with fear, the bat she keeps beside her bed drawn over a shoulder. Even her hands shake around the grip.
Of course she yelps when Johnny says her name, stepping out of the shadows, swinging wild. He winces when the bat smashes into a lamp, shattering it on impact.
“Fuck!” she screams, scurrying backwards into the wall behind her. Several framed pictures rattle against the wall, nearly knocked off their hooks.
“Noisy, isn’t she?” Ghost grumbles from the kitchen, tossing a bored glance over, unbothered by the commotion. He undoubtedly heard her creeping down the hall as well.
“What the fuck?” she gasps, chest heaving when she breathes. Her eyes dart from Johnny to Ghost’s massive form in the other room. Poor nervous thing. She must recognize Johnny’s voice saying her name even through the panic because her lips droop in a frown, more confused than petrified.
“Hen, it’s jus’ us—nothing to worry about,” Johnny coos, hands stretched out in front of him to show he means no harm.
It gets her to lower the bat, but only just, the slightest dip that has him darting forward to pry it gently from her hands. The ceramic shards on the floor will have to be swept up later, but he’s relieved that at least she didn’t step on any of them.
Up close, she’s just as pretty as he remembers. Pretty as pie. How could she not be? In the glow of youth still, not like it's been a decade since they last spoke face to face—only a little over a week. A sight for sore eyes, even though Johnny’s narrow when he stares down at her and thinks about the week of his texts and calls going unanswered. His jaw undulates, rage held back by the thin thread of her scent that wafts under his nose, making him lean into her.
Breathe in and out.
“Us?” she repeats, brow furrowing.
She glances over at Ghost again, the man still ambling around the kitchen, at home in her little one bedroom apartment like he visits her frequently. Like it’s his as well.
“Aye…Ghost wanted to come—Simon wanted to apologize…for the other day,” Johnny explains.
“You broke into my apartment in the middle of the night…so Simon could apologize for sexually harassing me?” she says, the disbelief smacking in her words.
“Hen, it's no' nice to say it like that—”
“No time like the present,” Ghost says, not ashamed in the slightest. “Heard you weren’t taking Johnny’s calls. Might not’ve had to do this if you’d picked up.”
Johnny doesn’t believe a word of that, but there’s no reason to call him out on it now.
He can see her wrestle with a trifecta of emotions competing for first place. Anger, embarrassment, and then, a smidge of worry holding up the rear. Aware of the fact that she woke up to two grown men, one practically a stranger, breaking into her apartment under the guise of having a conversation. His heart aches at the thought. The lion’s share of the blame rests with him, but still it’s her that suffers for it.
“You…you shouldn’t be here,” she rasps, flinching when Johnny lays a hand on her waist, towering over where she’s still cowered against the wall. Bat gone now, defenceless. Her pupils narrow to a pinprick. He almost tuts, poor thing. Scared out of her wits.
It feels so good to touch her though. Soft and yielding.
“‘Was Simon’s idea, hen, but, ah—” his breathing picks up when his fingers tighten on her waist and she squirms “—I was goin’ crazy thinkin’ ye were pissed for what happened last week. Couldnae get a wink of sleep—kept closin’ my eyes and seein’ your face. Nearly broke me.”
“I am pissed at you,” she snaps, temper getting the better of her.
“I ken, I ken,” Johnny coos, ducking his head until his lips graze her temple. “Simon’s sorry—we came all the way here so he could tell ye to your face, but fuck, hen, I’m sorry too—shoulda said something instead of standin’ there like a fuckin’ dolt—”
“You should’ve,” she interrupts, still fuming mad, an iceberg melting right in front of them. It makes his cock pulse.
“—Aye, hen, I’ve no excuse, none at all. Shoulda told Simon to fuck off and keep his hands to himself—”
“Careful, Johnny,” Ghost says warningly, finally stepping into the living room. He fills out the archway imposingly, almost forced to twist his body on an angle to step in.
Her eyes cut over to Ghost, narrowing, lips pursing. Johnny’s heart jumps in his chest. It’s one thing to see his girl again in the flesh, but to see her all righteous and on the verge of an argument—he could bend her over the back of the couch now, sink into the plush, delicate folds of her pussy, reacquaint himself with deep, languid thrusts. Heaven after not getting his cock wet in a week.
He flinches when he thinks about the last person to touch his dick.
“So you’re sorry?” she says to Ghost, her disbelief clear. Difficult to see why she wouldn’t find it hard to believe that the man that shamelessly grabbed her ass in broad daylight in front of a group of his colleagues and her boyfriend would now choose to apologize.
Johnny knows the answer is no when he sees the way Ghost’s eyes rove over her body, taking stock of her little cotton pajamas and her bare feet curling against the cold floor. Ghost tilts his head to the side, eyes travelling back up to meet hers. “Sure I am, bird. Don’t I look sorry?”
Neither of them answer that. Arguing with Ghost feels different, like inviting in danger. Moving too suddenly in front of a hungry dog, jowls loose and salivating for a bite.
He takes a step closer. “Complete pillock, wasn’t I? And now Johnny’s getting the silent treatment ‘cause of it. Just couldn’t bear another second of him moping around base on the verge of tears.”
Johnny frowns at that. His girl frowns too, but there’s something more to it. He wouldn’t blame her for not accepting Simon’s apology, if he could even call it that—nothing about it rings sincere, more like words spoken softly to call a kitty over—but questioning it feels worse somehow. Like detonating a bomb at two thousand feet above ground.
“…Okay,” she says instead, voice trembling a little. “Apology accepted. You guys can go home now.”
“Bird’s forgiving, huh, Johnny?”
Johnny preens despite himself. “Aye. She’s a good girl, Lt. Told ye so.”
Ghost nods. “That’s right. A good girl who’s gonna let us make it up to her ‘til we have to report back in forty-eight hours.”
“Wait, you can’t—” she starts, then cuts herself off when Ghost’s eyes flash.
He can’t help the way he shudders at the helpless look on her face. Downturned eyebrows, pretty lips slack with disbelief, just the slightest hint of a whine building in her throat that dies when it dawns on her that nothing short of calling the cops will make the two of them leave.
And she’s a good girl—would never call the cops on him. His perfect girl. Sweet as pie.
Johnny falls in love a little bit more when she presses her squeezed fists against her eyes and exhales. “Fine. I’m too—I’m going back to bed. We can talk about this in the morning.”
Ghost doesn’t react to her acceptance. It’s taken as a simple fact of nature—he says something and it happens. He speaks the world into being.
“I’ll take the couch,” he grunts, finally sitting down to unlace his boots. He looks comically large on her little couch—it’s more than likely that his feet will hang off the end, if not everything from the knee down.
Johnny already figured as much. No point in them driving all the way back to base when they both have the next two days off duty and there’s a perfectly serviceable couch for Ghost and the other half of her bed for him. He thought they’d have to convince her a bit more or strong arm her into it (a putrid thought; he’d rather have sweet talked her into the idea), but his girl always manages to surprise him in the best way.
On that thought, he looks over his shoulder towards the bedroom door, cock throbbing again at the thought of getting to hold his girl’s body against his. Touch starved dog. Mangy mutt, tongue lolling out at even the possibility of a pet.
Ghost must notice the object of his gaze because he sets him straight. “You can take the floor, Johnny.”
His tone brooks no argument. When Johnny whirls around, the words already on his tongue, she’s my girl, I’ve already slept in that bed ten times over, the sight of Ghost’s bare face, the mask now off, dangling in his hand like some scrap of fabric, makes him lose his train of thought. It’s not often he’s granted the luxury of seeing Ghost’s face—wide, clean shaven jaw, buzzed blond hair, old burn marks like a half-moon around his eye, nasty old scar slicing through his lips—and to see it now, here, makes something in him give.
Saturnine man with a wolf’s appetite. Ravenous.
It burns him that his girl looks slightly relieved at having the bed to herself. Irks him. Makes his jaw clench on a mean remark, half tempted to spit out something cross. Just because things have gotten complicated, now he’s not welcome in her bed? After the week he’s spent toiling, trying to make amends? Pleading desperately over the phone, stewing in guilt and heartache—Johnny knows she’s a good girl, but if he finds out that she’s replaced him with someone else in the week since they last saw each other—
Even the thought makes him see red.
He watches her as she turns around to retreat back to bed, more than a little displeased.
“Give Johnny a little kiss before bed, why don’t you, bird?” Ghost lightly suggests. Not a suggestion.
She freezes mid-turn. His expression dares her to put up a fuss. Johnny again nearly clucks his tongue, troubled on her behalf. Her spitfire nature is snuffed out easily under that stare. Grown men with experience in the field wither under Ghost’s stare. It’s no weakness of hers that she acquiesces time and again to his demands, glancing up at Johnny from under her eyelashes before shuffling over, pressing the lightest of kisses to his cheek.
“Better than that,” Ghost grunts, unimpressed.
His poor darling. Humiliated now. No skin off his back though. Johnny’s heart pumps double time when she presses her lips to his; soft petals that spread when he slips his tongue into her mouth, too eager after a week of nothing. Touch starved. Desperate to sink into her, lap his tongue over her lips and the roof of her mouth and press her jaw open to spit messily in her mouth. Take it, hen, every piece of me.
She rips her lips from his and dances away when he tries to get his hands on her, eyes wide, casting one last glance over at Ghost before hightailing it back to her room.
He barely resists going after her. Only Ghost’s stare roots him in place; his voice in Johnny’s head that rumbles, heel. I’ll tell you when to go.
He still doesn’t know what it says about him that he angles himself towards it. Bows his head to it. Moth to a flame that shocks him to the bone when he touches it.
Ghost tosses him the second pillow from the other end of the couch and takes the only blanket for himself. No matter. Johnny’s bivouacked on snowy cliff sides, chilblains blistering his toes for weeks; nights spent camped in torrential downpours, his tent on the verge of collapsing; windswept baysides chilling him to the bone. He can handle a pillow on a hardwood floor.
The ebb and flux of an ocean in his ear, and then Ghost’s voice from the couch: “I’ll take first watch.”
Whole body falling loose as if snipping a cord tethering him to the world.
“I’ll clean up the lamp in the morning,” he mumbles, vision already blurring. Ghost hums low in his throat.
He falls asleep with Ghost’s voice in his head, his girl’s taste still in his mouth.

For the first time in your life, you were regretting taking a vacation, and it was all Oscar Piastri’s fault.
Your family and the Piastris had been going on vacation together for as long as you could remember, and you’ve been best friends with Oscar for just as long. He was in the background of every defining moment of your life. He could say the same about you— best friends forever.
And then, like the idiot you are, you went and fell in love with him. You couldn’t exactly pinpoint how, or why, or when; all you knew was that you woke up on the second day of your vacation, walked into the kitchen, saw him pouring himself a bowl of cereal, and it hit you like a damn truck.
“Good morning, sweetie,” your mom says, barely noticing your slightly panicked expression as you realized that you were very much in love with your best friend.
“Morning,” you mumble back, unable to tear your eyes away from Oscar.
He notices you staring at him, your eyes as wide as saucers, and frowns. “You okay? There’s still some of this in the box, I saved it for you.”
Great. Of course he has to be so thoughtful all the time.
“Yeah, ‘m fine. Thanks, Osc.” You squeeze his arm as you pass by. He smiles at you, like he always does when you do that, and you want to die a little.
Especially when his girlfriend enters the room.
It’s the first time either of you have a significant other during your annual vacation time, and while you had aggressively lobbied against it (Oscar obviously had no clue), your parents and his parents had agreed to let her come. You were furious about it for weeks and couldn’t figure out why.
Well, now you know.
You can’t even enjoy your cereal, especially not when she kisses Oscar for everyone to see and then makes direct eye contact with you and smirks when he’s not looking. So, you decide to spend the entire day completely Oscar-less, as much as you wish you could just have him all to yourself like you always do when you’re here.
The thing is, you’ve never liked his girlfriend, obvious reasons aside. Even before Oscar started dating her, you’d never gotten along with her. It was like she had a personal vendetta against you, and always tried her hardest to be touchy with Oscar whenever she saw that you were in her line of sight. The most infuriating part is that literally no one else ever notices her behavior except you. Not even Oscar, your so-called best friend. Normally, you’d go to him to vent about something like this, because he’s always understood you in ways that no one else ever will. Now he’s the last person you can go to.
It sucks. You’re angry at your parents, his parents, and especially him for asking if he could bring her along in the first place.
You end up spending your entire morning and most of the afternoon at the beach. You don’t put on enough sunscreen because there’s no one there to make sure you use the proper amount. You hate getting sunburn, but you’d take that over seeing Oscar with his girlfriend. By the time you get back to the rental, everyone is off doing their own thing. Your parents are putting together a puzzle in the living room. Oscar’s parents have the door to their room shut, and you can hear the TV playing. You don’t have the courage to go looking for Oscar himself– once you see that he’s not in your shared room, you know that he’s either out or in his girlfriend’s room. Either way, you don’t want to know.
That was another thing that makes you wish this vacation never happened: Oscar had been allowed to bring his girlfriend, but the only condition was that the two of them had to sleep in separate rooms. That meant the two of you shared a room like always, but that didn’t mean he didn’t take every possible chance he could to go to hers, meaning you’re alone most of the time.
You might as well just pack up and walk home to save yourself the struggle of five more days.
It doesn’t seem like anyone is around to hear, so you let out a loud, frustrated groan as you flop back onto your bed. You look to your right, past Oscar’s bed, at the flowy curtains hanging in front of the doors that lead to the deck outside. One of the doors is ajar, and the slight breeze makes the curtains flap gently.
“You okay, sweetie?” Of course your mom heard you from all the way down the hall.
“Yeah,” you reply in a way that makes it very obvious that you’re not okay.
“Ah, I know that tone.” Your mom says, crossing the room to sit at the foot of your bed. “You need a boyfriend. You wouldn’t be this mopey if you had someone here with you, too.”
Like Oscar does. “You’re telling me,” you scoff bitterly. “I guess I’ll try a little harder for next year.”
“Well, are there any boys you’re interested in?” She asks, rubbing your leg comfortingly.
“I don’t know,” you mumble, turning your head away from her so she can’t get a perfect view of your face heating up as you think about your best friend.
She hums. “Yeah, I knew it.”
“Knew what?”
“It’s Oscar, isn’t it?”
You cover your face with your hands. “Ugh! Leave now, and we can pretend this conversation never happened.”
“Nice try.” Your mom pries your hands away and gives you a look. “I just don’t think it’s the best idea that you like Oscar. He doesn’t exactly have the most stable lifestyle.”
“He doesn’t need stability, he’s rich.” You shoot back. “I don’t even care about that, Mom. I’m not exactly interested in him because of his lifestyle.” You consider not saying it, but you’ll feel better getting it off your chest. “And his girlfriend is a bitch.”
“You’re right,” your mom says, and you can’t believe what you’re hearing. “I hate his girlfriend. I’ve always thought that you’re much better suited for him.”
“No kidding. Known him his whole life, everyone thought we were dating growing up, we’ve gone through just about everything together. I guess that simply doesn’t compare to the girl he’s known for five whole months.” You’re being snarky now, and you can’t find it in you to care. It should be you dating Oscar.
Everyone else seems to think so except him.
Your mom laughs, but in a way that you know that she agrees with you, as childish as you’re being. She continues to rub your leg, and the comforting motion has your eyes drooping. The stress of your newfound feelings and the warmth of the sun on your skin is more than enough to tire you out.
“Nap time?” She asks eventually, and you nod slowly.
“Mhmm.”
“I’ll come wake you up before dinner.” She kisses the top of your head, gets up, and then says something that has you wide awake. “Hey, Oscar. She’s sleeping.”
“Ah, okay. I’ll be quiet.” You hate the calming effect his voice has on you, even though now just looking at him has sent your heart racing.
One of them shuts the door, and shortly after you can feel the bed dipping under Oscar’s weight as he lays down next to you.
“Hey,” he whispers. “Missed you.”
I missed you more. Jerk.
“I know you’re awake,” he continues. “But you don’t have to talk to me.”
Good.
“I guess I deserve the silent treatment.”
Your resolve cracks a little, because he sounds genuinely upset. As much as you want to, you don’t open your eyes, but you do turn around to face him and move closer in the process. You can smell the faint traces of his cologne, and you have to fight a sigh of contentment. Damn him for always making you feel so safe. Besides, you’re a little cold now thanks to the air conditioning.
Your eyes nearly fly open in shock when he wastes no time in pulling you closer so you’re properly cuddled into his side and puts his arm around you. He lets out a breath, like he’s relieved, before he moves around a little and leans his head against yours.
The logical side of you is screaming to quit the sleeping facade and confront him right here and now about this rather intimate behavior, but the side of you that just discovered the strong feelings you harbor for your best friend tells you to just play along and enjoy whatever alone time you have with him. It’s not hard to pick which side to listen to.
The two of you stay this way for so long you start falling asleep again, and it only gets worse when he starts rubbing your back. It starts out very subtle; at first, his fingertips just move up and down along the fabric of your shirt. He stops for a moment, like he’s considering the outcomes of his actions, and then flattens his palm against your back and continues the up and down motion. You bury your head in his chest, mostly to hide the fact that you’re turning red but also because you just want to be closer to him. He hums a little when you do it, and you have to stop yourself from weighing the logistics of whether or not you could get away with kissing him right here and now.
You have to fight the urge to sleep, wanting to soak in every moment of his strange but welcome actions. Maybe this is all just an elaborate dream– either way, you’re not going to sleep through it.
The sound of him sighing again catches your attention, but you’re entirely brought back to reality when he starts moving.
You fully give up. You don’t want him to go, so you say his name quietly and look up at him.
He sits up a little to look back at you, and you reach up to smooth away the crease between his eyebrows with your thumb. “We’re on vacation. You’re supposed to be having fun.”
“So are you.” He points out.
Of course he’s picked up on it.
“It’s complicated.”
“Talk to me,” he encourages, shifting so he can keep you close. His little polite cat smile nearly has you spilling your guts to him about how much you wish you were the one he was kissing in front of everyone.
You press your lips together. “I… I can’t, Osc.”
You always hate his crestfallen expression, but you hate it more when you’re the cause of it.
“You can talk to me about anything, you know that right?”
“I know,” you reassure him. “Just… not this. Anything but this.”
He hums again, but not in the happy way that he did before when you were practically trying to crawl into his skin. This is more like a hum of concentration.
You have a moment of hope, thinking that maybe he’ll just let it go, but you know your best friend better than that. It doesn’t change your shock when he speaks again.
“Okay. I think I know what this is about.”
“I seriously doubt you do.” You can’t help but laugh a little. How could he possibly know about something that you yourself only just discovered?
He gives you a specific look then, a look that you have always despised being on the receiving end of. It’s a look that tells you he’s expecting you to explain yourself and see if he’s right. He usually is right, which only makes it worse.
“No.” You shake your head, starting to try and find a way to get up. “No, Oscar, don’t make me say it.”
He isn’t having it though: his arm stays snug around you, and he puts one of his legs between both of yours, hooking his ankle around yours so you can’t escape.
“Oscar,” you whine. “No fair, with your stupid reflexes.”
He whines your name back in the same exact tone. “Shouldn’t try to get away from me, then.”
You let out a groan of frustration. “I’m not telling you anything.”
Someone walks out into the hallway, and the sound of the footsteps coming towards your room makes the both of you freeze. The two of you are in a rather precarious position, with your limbs tangled and Oscar practically on top of you. Not that you necessarily mind, but if anyone walked in right now, eyebrows would be raised.
Oscar seems to be thinking along the same lines as you, meeting your wide-eyed stare with his own but not making any effort to move away. It clicks in your head at that exact moment, just as it did in the morning when you walked into the kitchen.
He does know.
“How?” You whisper, too wrapped up in your disbelief to even be embarrassed.
“I know you better than anyone,” he whispers back, head whipping towards the closed door when you hear a creak, like someone’s weight is shifting on the floor.
The footsteps recede. You both let out a breath, turning to face each other again. You’re close. Too close. Close enough that you could count his eyelashes if you wanted to.
You remember the last time you were this close to him— you were both 14, playing hide and seek at midnight at a friend’s birthday party. He’d accidentally chosen the same hiding place as you, a desk with a rolling chair in front of it, and you’d been forced to squish together underneath the desk in order to conceal yourselves well enough. You were mad that he chose the same spot as you because it raised the likelihood of being found, and he’d just giggled at you every time you glared at him. You remember how much you loved his giggle, and how you’d wondered what it would be like to kiss his smile.
Well. You really have been in love with him this whole time.
You want nothing more than to crawl under the bed and stay there for the rest of the vacation so you don’t have to look him in the eye. You never want to speak to him again. You want to tell him everything. You want to push him away. You want to hold him closer.
“Tell me I didn’t ruin our friendship.” Is all you can think to say, and Oscar reacts immediately, brushing your hair out of your face and hugging you tightly.
“Honey, you could never ruin this.” He presses his nose into your hair, brushes his lips against your head. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re not the one who should be sorry,” you grumble into his chest.
He doesn’t answer, instead choosing to alternate between playing with the ends of your hair and drawing shapes on your shoulder with his fingers. He’s always been affectionate with you, but this is a whole new level, and your overthinking has you worried that you’ll lose it entirely as soon as the two of you have to leave this room and face the reality of the situation. You close your eyes, trying your hardest to soak up every little detail of this moment in the event that you never get another like it.
You know Oscar thinks you’re asleep when, much to your dismay (and maybe his, too), he gets up and gently lays you back against your pillow.
“I really shouldn’t be doing this,” you hear him say, and then you feel his lips press firmly against your temple, his hand leaving the most featherlight touch on your cheek. “I’m sorry, baby.”
The soft material of a blanket covers your body, and the door opens and shuts. Your tears waste no time in soaking into the pillowcase.
You’re regretting this vacation, but it isn’t Oscar’s fault.
He’s not the one who fell in love with the one person he can’t have.
Things change, but not at all in the way you expect. Oscar still throws an arm around you for every picture and hoists you onto his back without hesitation for the obligatory piggyback photo that has been a vacation tradition since forever. His girlfriend still looks at you like you’re the pebble she can’t get out of her shoe, but for every dirty look and intentional display of affection, Oscar is there to make up for it. He goes to the beach with you and makes sure that you apply enough sunscreen, he goes to the amusement park with you even though he hates most of the rides, he takes you to breakfast at the risk of his girlfriend throwing a fit when you get back. She does, but he doesn’t care. He does it every year, and he tells you that he’d be damned if he didn’t keep up with it.
Maybe he pities you. It doesn’t matter. You can live with never even having a chance with the boy you think you’ve always wanted something more with, so long as you can continue to call him your best friend.
He leaves for his next race on the last day of vacation, and his girlfriend goes with him. You support him from home. He calls you every single day.
Oscar has never been able to go more than 24 hours without hearing your voice. He’s never been able to fully express just how much he needs you, and now he has to face the obstacle of breaking up with his girlfriend before he can even try.

A teenage boy is getting ready to take his girlfriend to prom...
First he goes to rent a tux, but there’s a long tux line at the shop and it takes forever.
Next, he has to get some flowers, so he heads over to the florist and there’s a huge flower line there. He waits forever but eventually gets the flowers.
Then he heads out to rent a limo. Unfortunately, there’s a large limo line at the rental office, but he’s patient and gets the job done.
Finally, the day of the prom comes. The two are dancing happily and his girlfriend is having a great time. When the song is over, she asks him to get her some punch, so he heads over to the punch table and there’s no punchline.
