I started the month strong by cracking, buying the last two books, and finishing Sierra Simone's Thornchapel series (here are my final thoughts), and then mostly spent the rest of the month on ARCs (see below) and a pretty diverse array of romances. All in all a great month!
Bed Me, Baron by Felicity Niven (releases September 7th)
I haven't had this much fun reading a historical romance in a long time. It's one of those romances that start off relatively light and frivolous (and there's an immediate "teach me" moment), but by the end, it really packs an emotional punch. For my full analysis on friends-to-lovers and the daddy of it all, here's my review.
Full Moon Over Freedom by Angelina M. Lopez (releases September 5th)
I'm not one to read romances with magic in them, but Angelina wrote wrote this deeply cultural and spiritual take on magic and superstition and intertwined it with the romance masterfully. Here's my full review.
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy (releases September 26th)
This book felt particularly special to me because the heroine is a first-generation immigrant and retains both her family's Palestinian culture and that classic can-do American spirit. The cultural rep as well as the feminist legal themes are compelling reasons for why we should be reading and writing more historical romances set later in the Victorian era. Here's my review.
It Had to Be a Duke by Vivienne Lorret (releases November 28th)
Adorable, hysterical, full review coming in a couple months, but here are my reactions.
What Was Meant To Be by Heather Guerre
Small-town romance done right. This one really hit on an emotional level; Rain has been under her father's thumb her entire adult life and was never given the resources and support she needed as someone with autism. As a result, she finds herself coerced into marry Wes, a guy in rural Wisconsin she's never met, so Wes can get the property he needs for his resort (basically a dowry :/). What follows is heartbreaking and uplifting at once: Rain begins to exercise her independence and she and Wes slowly come around to an tentative understanding. This is a book where fucking leads to feelings and there are some great sex scenes in this one. Rain is the dominant one in their sexual relationship, and Wes is 100% here for it... a Good Boy, if you will. It's a soft domme vibe but effective and very natural in my opinion, and I would love to read more of this dynamic in romance novels.
Knockout by Sarah MacLean
I knocked this one out in a day (here are my final thoughts). Plotwise my favorite in the Hell's Belles series (a series of mysterious targeted explosions? come on), and the romance between Imogen and Tommy was a perfectly done Grumpy/Sunshine. Also, if you weren't imagining Detective Inspector William 'The Duke' Wellington while reading Tommy Peck, you were reading it wrong.

Rules of Engagement by Christina Dodd
If there's one thing Christina Dodd excels at, it's writing a bitchy hero in that early 2000s kind of way. Kerrich has a little St. Vincent in him; his biggest issue (apart from his trauma from accidentally mooning the King of England after he fell off a trellis because he saw a girl naked) is that alllll his servants find him so hot they can't help but proposition him, so he decides to find the ugliest governess, procure a child, and become "respectable" thanks to a blackmail threat. Also, he does unironically wear a monocle and I'm here for it. Pamela is the kind of pragmatic heroine I love: she's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, but when push comes to shove, she feels very little shame in seeking pleasure.
The Prize by Julie Garwood
If you find yourself missing the Lillian-Westcliff dynamic but perhaps want to see it play out in a medieval setting, then this is your book! Royce is a hypercompetent Norman lord, and Nicholaa (yes there's an extra 'a' there) is, as the blurb perfectly puts it, a "resourceful, rebellious and utterly naive" Saxon lady. In the grand theme of Westcliff, there was definitely some conversation about how it was "unlike" Royce to do some not-entirely-consensual stuff during the deflowering scene, to which I say no, it really was... in character. Man was on the brink.
But if that's your jam, then you'll probably enjoy this one.
Redhawk Reunion series by Robin Covington
I found a new favorite Harlequin Desire series this month! The Redhawk Reunion series is about three siblings of Native American descent who were removed from their parents' home by CPS without cause and separated (I strongly urge everyone to look into Indian Adoption Project, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and Haaland v. Brackeen to learn more because it used to be upsettingly common due to government policy). Adam, the hero of the first book, hires PI Tess to find his long-lost siblings and they fall into a FWB situation with a side of secret REVENGE. The second book involves Adam's sister Sarina, who accidentally marries his business partner Justin in Vegas, and they too end up in a FWB situation except, well, as a married (for convenience) couple. As far as Harlequin Desires go, both are top-notch and deliver exactly what you want from this imprint.
Also, I believe the next book is supposed to be about Adam and Sarina's brother Roan and the President of the United States' daughter, whose portrait he's supposed to be painting and I'm VERY excited for that.

Tʜᴇ Kɪʟʟɪɴɢ Vᴏᴛᴇ
Thirty-five years ago, DC Comics opened a phone poll to kill Batman's child sidekick, Robin.
The poll was open to paying callers in the U.S. and Canada for a window of 35 hours, starting on 15 September 1988 at 9AM EST. There were two premium-rate phone numbers—one for Robin's survival, and one for Robin's death. Each paying caller could call multiple times. The results were decided by a margin of 72 votes out of a total 10,614 votes—the difference was just under 0.68%.
Now you decide.

"Who Killed Cock(y) Robin? I Killed Cock(y) Robin" article by Glen Weldon (2008)

SAVE ROBIN
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), a noted Bat-fan and scholar, denounced the episode as a "Roman gladiator-like readers vote."
"I loved him [...] I personally voted for him to live 100 times, and my mom flipped when she saw the phone bill," says magazine writer Savas Abadsidis.
MJG6 said: I was dead broke, working my way through college, but I voted. My first job was at a comic book store, making me an OG fan girl, I guess, and I encouraged people to vote to save him. [...] Because killing a teen, in a role kids are supposed to identify with, that was just sick.

Kill Robin
Anonymous propaganda IN FAVOR of killing the lobster the Robin!
I love Jason Todd. I love his post-crisis Robin days, I love his sense of justice and his adorable love of learning and his silly curly bangs! I say this to emphasize that I don't want him killed out of any dislike of the character.
I want him dead out of a love for storytelling that gets to stick to its guns and doesn't pull its punches. In context of the poll we readers have just seen Dick Grayson get kicked out of the role due to Bruce's fear of him getting hurt, then he turns around and gets a new Robin anyways because he misses him! I really like that Bruce is being messy and hypocritical! Let that have some real consequences please!
If there were no real consequences then Dick got shoved out of being Robin for what? Hairbrained overprotective worry? Why even change the way he graduated into being Nightwing so much then or heck why even kick him out in the first place?
One might argue that we haven't even given this Robin proper time to develop, that instead he might be taken in new and interesting directions as his own unique Robin shaping the mantle into a legacy rather than just something that was Dick's. I admit this is a very good point, and we are cutting off some possible interesting avenues. As I mentioned, I do like this character! But are we really going to get that?
If DC is already prepared to toss him out of this mortal coil and through the pearly gates after such a short while, do we really think we're going to get much more love and care applied to him?
I say let's roll the dice for something new! May the comics world and all these characters have to deal with the ramifications for many years to come!
Save Robin
robin’s death (and subsequent resurrection) is, frankly, an insult to robin fans of that era. to want to see this child get killed in a brutal manner for no apparent reason, to see jason essentially removed from the narrative so batman could go back to being gritty and depressed—this is awful to me. he hadn’t even been robin for very long!
but that’s not why he should’ve lived.
the resurrection of jason todd as the red hood was narratively interesting enough that it kept most fans of the original jason hooked, and it still does! he has become a prime example of a trauma survivor: his death changed him, and those who loved him have difficulty accepting that.
but there is no resolution to that story, nor was there a resolution to jason’s tenure as robin. dick chose to leave robin behind and take on a new mantle. tim, steph, both had robin taken away from them (and let’s forget about how tim is still robin, because that doesn’t matter right now). damian’s role as robin conflicts with his misconception of his role in the family. everyone else has had an ending, and jason’s death…well. after his resurrection, he has somehow remained stagnant and wildly inconsistent at the same time. this applies to under the red hood too.
at its core, utrh is a deeply classist retelling of jason’s life pre-death in the family. winick makes him a villain—albeit a sympathetic one—who fucks over or kills people that he would’ve thrown himself in front of to save as robin. in utrh, the implication is that jason had always been violent and angry (and morally compromised), and that he was destined to become worse.
it sometimes feels that jason’s transition into being the red hood (and all the characterization that comes with that) was a decision dc made for shock value. just from jason’s robin run, it’s difficult to imagine jason becoming the red hood. it doesn’t feel inevitable. it’s tragic.
ultimately, i believe that jason never should have died, and that his death was a stunt by dc for its shock value. jim starlin wanted jason dead because to him a child sidekick, in a medium that was originally made for children, was “sheer insanity”. he was fridged, plain and simple.

Hey dude hey, okay so I want to know about so so many of this but pretty please tell me about king boy alex who’s having lots of emotions 🙏🏻
Thank you for the ask Kyleigh!!
This au my beloved <3 It's my unhinged poly arranged marriage royalty au (I actually have 2 of those but this one is my favorite).
So basically how it goes is Prince Alexander's parents decide he needs to be married so they arrange a marriage between him and Princess Lucinda (aka Luke), who is trans but not out to his parents. And their whole honeymoon is Alex being like "oh no I can't get to close bc she actually likes me but I'm gay" and Luke being like "oh no I really like him but he must be pushing me away bc he knows I'm not a woman" and then they both accidentally confess to each other and actually fall in love now that they know they're both men interested in men.
But then Alex's parents find out that Luke is a man (and is intent on living as one) and since royals can't get divorced, they decide to tell the kingdom that "Princess Lucinda" has died tragically in her sleep, which allows Luke to transition (Alex's parents are against this part but Luke's parents ended up being supportive so they were kinda forced to go along with it).
But Alex is once again wifeless. So they decide, okay, you blew it with the "princess," so the next best thing is marrying Duke Covington's daughter, Lady Wilhelmina (aka Willie). Alex is planning on telling Willie that he's gay in an attempt to get him to call the marriage off, but he realizes almost immediately how abusive Caleb is and tells Willie "look I will marry you to get you out of there but I need you to know I'm gay and this is my husband who used to be my wife." And Willie is like "thank god bc I'm a man too" and Alex and Luke are like "a man you say 👀 did we happen to mention how handsome you are" and they bring Willie into their relationship. When Willie is ready, they tell Alex's parents that Alex's wife is once again his husband now and they tell the kingdom that Princess Wilhelmina has tragically died in a fire (he was a known arson enthusiast).
Aaand once again Alex needs a new wife bc there are still no heirs (and any made with Luke and Willie would be illegitimate). Alex's parents are running out of eligible women, but they meet Duchess Regina Peters (who runs the estate with her twin brother Reggie, or at least that's what Reggie, who is genderfluid and is also Regina, wants the world to think). And they're like you seem female and eligible will you marry our son. And Reggie's like yeah sure why not, except when he finds out Alex is gay he shows up to the wedding in Man Mode and it starts a riot but Alex finds a way to make the marriage go through anyway (maybe that they put Regina on the marriage certificate idk). And then two weeks later "Duchess Regina" is tragically trampled by sheep.
Alex's parents are exhausted. They're furious. They're 99% convinced Alex has hired a witch to turn all his fiances into men. And they're like fuck it. This time you pick a woman (bc maybe he's turning them all into men bc he doesn't like that his parents picked them.) And Alex sees an opportunity here. Bc back when Luke first came out, Alex's sister had a lady in waiting named Robin. And Robin had confided in Luke and Alex that he was trans as well. And so when Alex's parents say "you pick" he immediately points at Bobby and says "That one." (important to note that he did not consult with Bobby on this beforehand, Bobby nearly chokes on his food). And after they get married, Bobby comes out and suddenly Lady Robin has tragically drowned.
So now Alex has four husbands who are also in love with each other and still no wives, and it's at this point that Lady Julie (Luke's lady-in-waiting who just kinda stuck around after Luke's legal death) is like "You know I'd marry you to get your parents off your back right?"
And so Julie and Alex get married, and after she stays a woman for a year Alex's parents finally relax. And then Julie gets pregnant! And they're so happy that they finally step down and let Alex take the throne. Except... how is Julie pregnant? And when she gives birth, why does the baby look nothing like Alex??
Maybe bc after wedding #3 Reggie mentioned to Alex that he has a friend from school who is a trans woman named Flynn. And maybe Alex decided to hire her as his new royal advisor to give her an opportunity to transition. And maybe just maybe she and Julie fell in love.
And THAT is the tale of King Alexander, his four undead husbands, his wife, his wife's wife, and the royal-ish baby they're all raising together

ABOUT
Full Name: Georgia Mae Abhrams
Nickname: Georgie, GMA (In her sister’s phone, does a great Robin Roberts impression), Gigi
Age/DOB: March 3, 1992 (31)
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Gender: Cis Female
Place of Birth: Covington, GA
Neighborhood: Avonlea Terrace
Sexual/Romantic Orientations: Bisexual / Biromantic

PERSONALITY
Goals/Desires: Above all else, Georgie's biggest desire is to be loved, to be wanted. It's all she's ever wanted since she was a child, love and affection. And her utmost desire is to have that piece of herself fulfilled. Outside of her never ending need for acceptance and love, however, she wants to make her family- specifically her siblings- proud of her. She wants to make her life worth something, prove she's worthy of the Abhrams name even if she's hated living in its shadow her entire life. She just wants to matter.
Fears: Dying alone, snakes, heights, forgetting to brush her teeth before leaving the house, never hearing the words "I'm proud of you" from another Abhrams
Hobbies: Going for long runs, cooking new recipes, sleeping until noon, redecorating the pool house on her parents' property she lives in, sending 'accidental' nudes to people she shouldn't, trying to find where she left her epipen, staring at the night sky and making up her own constellations with their own tragic backstories
Likes & Dislikes: high heels, sunlight, anything smothered in cheese, pickles, ice cream, sparkling wine, the sound of her niece's laughter, the warmth of a prolonged hug, smiling until her cheeks hurt, 'self care' days, spending the day in bed, cashmere sweaters, fuzzy socks, hydrangeas, surprise visits, hot showers, men in grey sweatpants // unbrushed hair, ill-fitting clothing, complete darkness, creepy crawly animals, shooting ranges, loneliness, feeling helpless, hot coffee, having to drive herself places, ebooks, mismatched patterns, being told what to do, the way the smell of fire stays in your clothes and hair, the fact that she'll never be a mermaid, chipped nail polish
QUICK FACTS (quick is subjective tho bc idk how to tldr anything and summarizing isn't really my strong suit)
Trigger Warnings: Missing Person & Child Abuse Mention
Born and raised in Covington, Georgia “Georgie” Abhrams is the youngest of the four Abhrams children and if she had to give herself a label- she’d say she’s the black sheep, the family disappointment
She was never her parents’ favorite, despite trying her hardest as a child to get their love and affection, Delilah and Benjamin already had their focus on their eldest children. Georgie did everything to try and make her parents proud, following in her eldest sister’s footsteps in learning the piano and attending cotillion. Ensuring she didn’t act out in public to affect their father’s political image, always looking her best. But it was all to no avail.
So when falling in line and doing everything she could to be the best Abhrams she could didn’t work, Georgie realized what did work was acting up and acting out - it started simple, throwing a fit in the store or making faces during public appearances - anything her young mind could do to get their parents attention. Because despite the fact that it was bad attention, at least they were acknowledging her existence.
As she grew older, Georgie grew more bold, more wild. She hung out with people too old for her adolescent self, got brought home by the cops a few times. It was during those times she’d garner her father’s coveted attention. Sure, it was pure anger- raised voices and hands- but at least he was acknowledging her. Georgie didn’t care what kind of attention she got from her parents, as long as they were speaking to her. At least then she could trick herself into believing they cared.
Despite everything, though, Georgie loved her family and was loyal to them to a fault. A loyalty that was put to the test when she was just 17 years old. She’d met and fallen in love, feeling wanted and appreciated for the first time in her life really lightened the wild blonde’s personality and things began to fall into place for her. Until, that is, her father found out. He normally wouldn’t have cared who his youngest daughter spent her time with, proven by his past indifference, but the boy the youngest Abhrams had fallen for was the son of the man who’d beat Benjamin for mayor and he made her choose. Her boyfriend or her family. An impossible choice, but one Georgie made without blinking, her loyalty shining through the cracks of her broken heart as she ended the relationship she’d come to treasure.
So she went back to her chaotic ways, doing whatever she could to heal her broken heart until she left Covington for college at 18 years old with no intention of ever looking back. If Covington didn’t want her then she’d find a way to make a name for herself elsewhere.
Georgie took to college like a fish to water- not academically, but socially, joining a sorority her first semester and finding people who didn’t tie her worth to her last name. Sure, a lot of her popularity came from the way she showered her friends with gifts, but Georgie finally had the love she’d craved her entire life. And then she met him.
It was only her second semester of freshman year when she’d gone to a rodeo with her sorority sisters and a flask full of tequila. She may have been halfway through the flask when their eyes locked, but she felt instant sparks. He was a bull rider, all danger and sex appeal, and Georgie was powerless against his charms. In usual Georgie fashion (acting on impulse), after a whirlwind courtship the youngest Abhrams left college before finishing her first year and took off on the rodeo circuit with her new beau.
It was everything she could have ever hoped for, the adventure, the romance, the sex. It was perfect, at least until his wife surprised him on the road one day and suddenly Georgie was forced to hide away for two days in another rider’s fifth wheel. When his wife finally left, Georgie was incensed. The fight that ensued was loud and aggressive, but at the end of it Georgie didn’t leave. When faced with the choice of going back to college, or worse, going back home, and staying with a man who’d only ever be able to keep her as his dirty little secret? Well, Georgie chose to stay. At least there she had the attention and adoration she’d sought out her entire life.
And stay she did. For a year and a half, until his wife forced him to make a choice. Their marriage or his mistress. And he chose his marriage, a choice that tore Georgie up more than she’d ever like to admit. And she ended up coming back home with her tail between her legs, moving back into her childhood home with the parents that continued to ignore her. Back to her life as the invisible Abhrams child at 21 years old.
For the next decade or so, Georgie floated through life just as she’d done her entire life. Despite being the only one of her siblings who came back home and stayed with their parents, she continued to be ignored by Delilah and Benjamin unless she was causing havoc that made their family look bad. She continued to hope that one day she’d be good (or bad) enough to garner her parents love and affection, but the older she grew the dimmer the hope was- even if it never fully went away
But then, another twist of fate brought her the attention and affection she’d always wished for from her father when she started dating a man nearly twice her age. Pierce Montgomery was made of old money and older political ties that Benjamin, upon hearing of the relationship, instantly felt he could exploit
Suddenly, the dad Georgie had always wanted was in her life. Interested in her relationship without trying to end it. Asking how she was, inviting her and Pierce to dinner with him and Delilah. She had everything she’d ever wanted and, despite knowing deep down that her father’s attention came full of strings and wouldn’t have happened without Pierce being in her life, Georgie reveled in it. Which was why she stayed in the relationship months longer than she should have. She couldn’t remember the charismatic politician everyone spoke of when they talked about her father, but suddenly there he was. Because of her. Because of a choice she made. And despite having her own job, she got behind her father and his decision to get back into politics.
But as quickly as Benjamin’s affections came, they were gone when her relationship with Pierce inevitably came to an end. And no matter how hard Georgie tried to stay in the loop, to be useful to her father and his rejuvenated political aspirations, she was once again cast to the shadows. So when Benjamin turned up missing, it was easy for Georgie to turn on the waterworks and pretend to be the worried, grieving daughter for the public. Just like her mother wanted her to be, but deep down? Georgie couldn’t help but to feel relieved. She may never have gotten to know her father, but now she didn’t have to worry about fighting for his attention and he was finally back in the spotlight like he’d always wanted.

That post about the round robins made me want to write a Long Thing (that could be longer…this is me exhibiting some self control) about collective labor organizing on whaleships. In the face of industry-standard terrible conditions there were also attempts made by crew members to push back against them.
One of the most common complaints and reasons for work stoppages was men not being granted shore leave. Captains tried to limit anchoring in any port as much as possible, preferring to lay off and on and get supplies delivered by boat. This was partly avoid paying harbor fees but also to avoid desertion. When a whaler had a grievance it was much more common for an individual to simply desert at the first opportunity rather than trying to organize with the crew to improve ship conditions. But when a ship came into port, that’s also when the chance of a stoppage would be more likely—especially if liberty hadn’t been given to the men.
“Trouble with the Crew”, Captain George Bliss of the Smyrna wrote at the top of his entry for July 7th, 1855. The ship was at anchor in Java.
“At about 7 A.M. took the anchor with the intention of proceeding to sea, after getting one anchor on the bow (8 A.M.) most of the crew from the forecastle, with the boatsteerers and cooper came aft (Robt. C. Rugg excepted) and wished to know if I was going to sea with so small a quantity of refreshments and without giving them any liberty, I told them my intention was to go and finish the cruise, then go in for recruits and to give them liberty [.] upon telling them so they went forward refusing to do duty unless they could have liberty before going to sea, and did so repeatedly, upon which the Chief Officer said he was not going to sea with the crew off duty (trouble again).”
The company ended up being given 10 days liberty as a result.
Sometimes labor unrest took a much more dramatic turn in port, where crew members would intentionally destroy the ship. Albert Peck, a greenhand aboard the Covington, spoke about this in relation to another captain whose brutal reputation preceded him.
“We here spoke the ship Hibernia [Hibernia II] of N.B. She was commanded by one of those old sea tyrants who with their success in whaling have gained a wide spread fame for cruelty. This skippers name was Edwards, and his looks were a good index to his character. He had commanded a ship called the Geo.Washington some years before, and going into a South American port the crew set her on fire to get clear of her.”
Refusing to sail in a ship that was in poor condition was another reason for work stoppages. This was an issue brought forward by the crew of the ship Bowditch, 1849, while at port in Rio De Janeiro. However, in this instance concern about the ship’s seaworthiness wasn’t necessarily the true reason for the stoppage, but rather anger over not having been given liberty at port. Whaler Samuel Woods, after grumbling for several days about not being able to go ashore, wrote instead on the condition of the ship:
“Wednesday this day the Carpenters finished thear work on the Ship or at least they call it done but she is not properly don and the carpenters say that she is not fit for Sea as She is now and the crew know it [.] on today the hands before the mast resolved not to go as She is now and mad[e] a muster aft a told the Capt that if he did not repair the Y[ards] as the Carpenters advised to be don that we would not go to sea when the Capt told us that if we did not return to duty that he would have us all seized in the rigin before night [.] we told him that we would not when the capt ordered the boat to pull him on Shour [.] the boat returned tonight without the  the Capt we expect ruf usage on the morow [.] hard and dubious times just now nothing more.”
The first mate, Allen Newman also wrote on this situation, expressing incredulity for their reasoning.
“At 1pm the following of the Crew refused duty on account (as they say) of the ship being Rotten.”
He followed this comment with 16 names—Mr. Woods among them—of the men who refused work. The captain went ashore to the Counsel for a survey to be conducted of the ship’s safety. After the survey a letter was given to the captain by the Consul and read aloud to all hands:
“Captain Waldron Two American Ship Masters and the Carpenter of the Frigate Brandywine, haveing at my request examined the Ship Bowditch, Commanded by you, and haveing reported to me that there is nothing to endanger the Safety of the vessel, on account of the Copper being off, as it appears to them, & that the hull and masts and yards, tackle and apparel generally are in good Order for the voyage, you will be justified in requiring your Crew to proceed to Duty forthwith and in enforcing their Obedience, Which I have no doubt they will Cheerfully do upon your Order, if however any should Refuse you will apply (if you think fit) for an Order for their Arrest and imprisonment in Jail until the time of Sailing.”
The first mate added that still all hands refused to comply even with this threat and “chose to wait until morning and abide the consequence, in the morning call’d them and they still refused to comply with his request.” The captain ultimately ended up escorting the dissenters to the Consul with the assistance of a group of soldiers. When threatened with imprisonment 14 out of the 16 men returned to duty. Their aims for shore leave were unmet.
So while work stoppages were more likely to take place while in port, partly because of simmering issues now stirred up by being in tantalizing sight of land, the presence of shore authorities made it easier for captains to quash any such attempts. At sea, it was sometimes a different matter. Labor issues that arose at sea stemmed most frequently from having to eat bad food, objections over harsh punishment or treatment, and having to do more or unnecessary work while not being given adequate time below during watches.
The first strategy men tended to employ was organizing as a body and going aft to make their complaint to the Captain. An example of this happened on the 1859 voyage of the Atkins Adams, where William Abbe wrote in detail how the complaint of their terrible food was made:
“As soon as we saw him [the captain] walking up + down as usual—we all walked aft—I heading with the pan of grub—followed by all hands at my back + walked up to the Cap — who paused just abaft the mainmast + with as much respect in my manner as I could assume, I said, holding out the pan — “Captain all hands of us agreed this morning to come aft + show you our grub — That is one man’s allowance + its a fair index of what we get every morning. Besides our grub is generally filled with cockroaches, especially our duff, which we have to cut in thin slices to eat—”
This particular request was unsuccessful. The Captain ultimately roughed Abbe up and snapped at all men to go forward, which they complied with. Sometimes captains were able to strong arm a labor dispute by punishing a handful of men so the others lost their resolve. But other times the rest of the crew held firm, as was the case of a similar complaint made on the St Peter in 1849. The crew refused to do work if the Captain went on with his intention of making them eat spoiled beef. Their demands ended up being met because the crew refused to back down.
Whatever authority the captain and officers may have had aboard, it paled when the rest of the ship held firm. The pay structure of a whaleship had much to do with this. No one, including the captain and officers, had a wage. Everyone’s pay came at the end and was determined entirely by the success of a voyage. When labor issues arose, the crew would work slower. They would fumble with lowering the whaleboats. They wouldn’t sing shanties to speed the work along and they’d languidly weigh anchor on their own time. They’d half-heartedly pull at their oars after a whale, and miss with their harpoon on the off chance the whale was near to them. While luck played a significant role in how well a voyage went, the labor of the crew was the ultimate deciding factor. No amount of irons, blustering, or flogging would diminish that reality, and there were times when the crew made a point to remind their officers such.

uuuuh I desperately want to know about jatp secret garden au. please tell me whatever you want
Oh yeah, I forgot I mentioned that! It's a very disjointed idea, but the basic points I have are: (Note, this is based on the musical version of the story)
Julie as Mary, Carrie as Collin(cause you can't convince me she wouldn't do the whole "I'm too sick to do things" thing), Willie as Dicken, Flynn as Marta, Trevor as Archibald, Caleb as Dr. what's his name, and Rose as Lily.
Trevor, Ray, and Rose all used to be together, but some kind of rift formed, causing Ray and Rose to move away with baby Julie. Trevor was left with baby Carrie and the memory of his loves. He couldn't take it and boarded up both Rose's garden and Ray's library.
Ray and Rose (and everyone else) die in India, leaving a 15 year old Julie alone. Their will names Trevor as her guardian. So she is sent to England to live with him. Trevor's brother, Caleb, is eager to send her away to school, but Trevor can't stomach the idea of losing the last little piece he has of his two lovers. She comes to the house.
Julie is basically shut down from grief. Flynn is like, "why is this girl so useless?" but also wants to help her. The two slowly become friends as Julie opens up and Flynn learns to translate her Yorkshire a bit.
Julie finds Carrie, a bit of yelling happens, but they become friends as well after a bit. Carrie struggles with feeling jealous of Julie's friendships outside of her room, and Julie sometimes resents Carrie for still having at least one parent alive, but they make it work.
Side note, I have no idea what, if any, romance would be going on in this story. If I ever wrote it, I feel that the characters would decide for me. I could see it going many directions to be honest. But I wouldn't be surprised if some combination of Flynn, Carrie, and Julie ended up in love.
Anyways, Julie spots Rose's garden, gets warned off, Willie helps her talk to a robin and get the key, all that jazz. But the garden is dead.
Very disheartened, Julie retreats back into herself. Her friends notice and want to help. Willie and Flynn start helping her with the garden. So does Alexander, the doctor's footman, when he can get away... Julie isn't imagining the looks going back and forth between him and Willie, right?
But they get found out! And Trevor runs off to London, freaking out. Dr. Covington wants to send Julie away to school. Julie just wants a home and a family. But Carrie is getting worse and they can't see her! So Julie writes to Trevor, who has had to face his past while away. He comes home.
When he gets back, he calls Julie into a room she hadn't seen before. Ray's library. He finally explains everything that happened between him and her parents and asks her forgiveness for not being the parent he wanted to be for her. Julie accepts but points out that he owes that more to Carrie than her. Big family reconciliation moment!
Covington gets sent packing, but Alex has been hired on as a gardener so all is well! They all go out to the garden and live happily ever after.
Yup, that's about all I got. It's mostly snapshots to be honest. But yeah, that's my secret garden au idea!
