A long post about Rthstewart

Something @rovinglemon and I were talking about while facetiming and watching Prince Caspian - her on the TV and I on my ipad in my little dormroom - was how @rthstewart's Narnia series is what we believe as canon.

I've always felt a sense of detachment from Narnia, like I, as an autistic woman do not belong in that world. How easily my fate could become that of Susan's if my belief in Aslan so much as wavers an inch from the imaginary line Narnians must tread. I'm an atheist partly because of my own experiences and disbelief in the non-tangible. However, I do believe in ghosts and the paranormal because of fiction and my work on The Great War.

But reading @rthstewart's Stone Gryphon series and her side novels set during the golden age of Narnia made me feel like I could have a place within that world. @rovinglemon agrees, and we've discussed at length also how Rth's works take the existing canon and with the sheer mind-boggling level of detailed research she's done, makes Narnia something wholly alive. The world is not static because it is so completely tangible that I return to it time and time again. It's become how I relax after working on essays for my midterms and studying. Every time, without fail, I pick up the page or chapter that I'm on, and I am lost to the world around me. Her writing is so incredibly well written that it is often hours before I can be torn away from her stories. It is in her writing of Morgan especially that I find myself at home as an autistic person. Her mannerisms are similar to mine and Rth's evident care and research in writing Morgan's character as an autistic person shines through so well that I have yet, and doubt that I will find any fault in her portrayal, which is something so many altistic writers struggle with, especially headliners such as Mark Haddon either flat-out ignore, or attempt to rationalize their grevious misdeeds behind the NYT's Bestseller list.

Rth's writing of the Four also must be commended. RL mentioned on our call about how Peter's intelligence as shown through Rth's writing is a different kind to Edmund's or Susan's. Sword (in the Rat and Crow code), is less about the boy-against-boy blindsided idiocy that Prince Caspian sets front and center stage, and instead makes the Four - Sword, Rat, Crow, and Heart, into people fundamentally struggling to survive in a world that will never understand them. Their maturity in the bodies of children sets them apart, and it shows in the best of ways, whether they reign as Kings and Queens, or exist in what I call their "English Exile," that they are flawed people who question Aslan's greater plan, but are fundamentally trying to make the world both a better place and answer to the creed as Friends of Narnia.

So to @rthstewart, I raise my glass to you, and look forward to whatever next you plan to be writing.

Narnia Fic Recs-After the Return

I’m starting a short fic rec series to spread some love for Narnia authors, they aren’t in any sort of order other than the really long ones are on the bottom.

A lot of these stories are on ff.net which I know is a pain of a site to use, however, I sorted through a lot of Narnia fics to find these and I think they deserve some love. I did check if anything was on ao3 and put that link instead if I could find it. Please give these authors some love, kudos, favorites, comments, etc. They’re all great and it’s always fun to find older fics!

An interesting series really diving into how people see the Pevensies, specifically in a war context as Peter and Edmund join up with the military. More of a otherworldly vibe to the Pevensies as people don’t understand how a couple of kids can be so brutal, charasmatic, and efficient. Little bit of shipping of Edmund in the last works, but not really the focus. The last major story so far is a crossover with Torchwood which is super fun and really brings Susan and Lucy to the forefront. 

Stone Gryphon by @rthstewart

Rated G-T, 604.5k words, 17 works (Don’t let the size freak you out, the stories need to be read mostly in order but each plot wraps up in the individual work)

This one has really fun characterization and world building. It’s set after the Pevensies come back the second time, and while it’s set in England, there are lots of flash backs and descriptions of the Golden Age. The world building is unique in the characterization of talking animals and the focus on how the talking animals are similar to actual animals while still being thinking beings. The siblings are split up, Peter makes friends with the professor’s friends and is preparing for college, while Susan starts helping with the war effort. She keeps Edmund abreast of the war through a Narnian code, similar to how they worked as joint spy masters in Narnia. 

Be aware there is some shipping of the Pevensies with OC’s especially as you get further and acknowledgement of them as adults because they were adults in Narnia. I’m not sure if I actually finished it, but I still think about it frequently because of how intriguing the world building is and how interesting it is to see Susan and Edmund helping with a human war. Definitely worth checking out.

As usual when I do this, I cut the 3SF fics cause it's less fun when the sentence is a third of a whole fic.

Sitting on her narrow bed, Lucy rolls her neck in the summer heat, trying to rid herself of the tension built up inside her, vertebrae cracking so that Susan would surely have been cross, if she were present to witness it. (we’ll be alone by tomorrow (and you should get what you want tonight), Lucy/Caspian, Narnia)

No matter how long he watches, the sun does not shift, not in this endless sky. (Always, we strive to get closer, Susan/Edmund, Narnia)

The night I return to the palace from my imprisonment under the waves, I don’t know what I expect from Cardan. (There's a joke here somewhere (and it's on me), Jude/Cardan, Folk of the Air - Holly Black)

They're all from exchange or fest fics, and almost all mid length one-shots. The two Susan/Jon are multichapter, but honestly that's only because I feel awkward posting a 10k+ chunk as a single chapter.

Mostly what this tells me is I've been getting far more verbose lately! Less so when I'm trying to imitate another author's style - as with the two book fics - or write a prologue, as with A Toast to the Damned. And I almost never begin with dialogue! I should try that more often.

favorite colour: blue. specifically the silver blue that moving water turns when the sun bounces off it just right, the blue-green-turquoise that really cold mountain lakes turn when its clear, and the blue-purple the sky turns when the sun's not there but its not quite dark yet/anymore

currently watching: gosh so many things 😬, I'm just going to count things that I've been actively watching in the last week otherwise this list will be enormous since I have chronic 'stop-watching-in-the-middle-of-a-series' syndrome, so: Friends, Charmed (og) (again), live-action one piece (if I've seen the first episode it definitely counts), and I'm halfway through a tatort episode that I had to pause in the middle yesterday

last movie/tv show: huh, I kind of covered that already, but I'm going to go with the last film I watched because I feel like being in the middle of several tv series doesn't count, which I think was live-action the Little Mermaid

spicy/savory/sweet: sweet, definitely sweet, although I'm not immune to a kick of spice in my sweet things. it makes it interesting.

relationship status: long-distance relationship bc we live on opposite ends of the country rn

current obsession(s): charmed (og), batfam (WFA if I'm being specific), I'm back down the star wars rabbit hole which is good bc I have a fic to finish but bad bc I'm looking longingly at the wrong part of the fic bc I don't want to be sad, and for some reason star trek, which is weird bc it's the only one on this list I haven't consumed some kind of media for recently

Toward the Aftermath (235 words)

Nearly a third of her life spent with the Indrillines, playing role upon role, answering to names not her own, complicit in horrors (responsible for horrors; no one who serves an Indrilline is permitted to keep clean hands, and all too soon she had to plan operations on her own, unearth spies on her own, mete out punishments on her own), and in the end she still would have failed if not for Jemis and his reckless tendency toward self-sacrifice, burning himself out as though he can't quite accept that others care for him and will grieve and ache if he's hurt, if he's gone.

She is going home, she is bringing her brother home, and all it cost was handing a metaphorical knife to a man she might love and helping him shove it home between his ribs.

Redshank is her cover name, chosen at sixteen to amuse Lark, but more accurate than either of them knew at the time: her legs and feet are covered in the blood she waded through, and so too are her hands, and her lips, and her teeth; and if some of that blood (that pain) is her own, those drops can never outweigh the deluge of her guilt.

Violet sits in the carriage beside her sleeping brother and bites the inside of her cheek until the sharp copper-penny taste of blood seeps across her tongue once more.

2. What is home to you? This is a tricky one. The people I love most are all home to me - my parents, my cousins, my best friends. The places I love best are home too - the lake at my grandma's house, the whole city of London. And yet I still feel like I haven't found home, when "home" means the place that I belong forever. I belong with all these people, yes, but not all the time; they have partners and lives of their own, and as much as I come back to visit I am not meant to stay indefinitely. I love to travel as much as I do because I am still searching for the place and people who will be the home I always return to.

4. What magical creature would you be? Oooooh depends on our definition of creature and which magical universe we're talking. Maybe an elf, maybe a mermaid; I love forests and I love to swim. Equally I could be a phoenix, as I'm very resilient, or a kneazle, as I am often cat-like.

7. Beach, castle, or forest? Forest!!! I adore disappearing into the trees for a while. It makes me feel centered and relaxed and connected with the world. Bonus points if there's a lake.

20. What color are you? My best friend reliably informs me that I am lavender - soft, gentle, regal, comforting. In rthstewart's Narnia universe (which I HIGHLY recommend, one of my all time favorite book series, start here), she describes gentleness really wonderfully, through a magical fire salamander talking to Queen Susan the Gentle about her new title: "Why gentle? Not harsh or severe, a gentle scolding, a gentle tap. Good breeding, high station, chivalrous as a knight that you shall never be. To tame or break, that will never be you. Easily managed? I suppose that's true enough, though you are the one doing the managing not being managed, if you take my meaning... The trick is, gentle isn't weak. Everyone thinks it is, and isn't. Gentle is getting your way without anyone noticing it. A tide is gentle until you drown in it. A tree grows gently until its roots strangle you." That's always resonated with me (as so much of rth's work does). I can be soft without being a pushover. I love being soft and comforting! I am a gentle person by nature; that does not mean I am not fighting for what I believe in.

my lucy pevensie edit, which is heavily inspired by @rthstewart's Golden Age Narnia fics. I like the pictures I chose and the way they fit together.  (rthstewart, if you're reading this, hi! I love all your Golden Age fics, especially By Royal Decree, and I always read them when I'm in the mood for older!pevensie Narnia fic!).

this eowyn edit - this was actually one of first few edits I've made, so I'm always surprised by how many notes it has! I really like the middle row with the horse and medieval lady facing each other. It's no secret that eowyn is one of my favorite fantasy ladies, and I loved making it!

this edit I made of my girl ginny for a source blog I was part of (hpladiesdaily, which has since been deactivated). I think the pictures manage to capture her personality a lot

this one of space mom carrie fisher - I like that I was able to find and use pictures capturing her glorious personality at different stages of her life.  She was drowned in the moonlight strangled by her own bra and is watching over all of us 💖

lastly, I had a lot of fun making this nancy wheeler edit! It was fun finding that balance between gun-wielding monster killer and feminine 80's girl :)
