This 1943 painting by Laura Knight (1877-1970) depicts 21-year-old Ruby Loftus (2921-2004) working at an industrial lathe cutting the screw of a breech-ring for a Bofors anti-aircraft gun. Ruby became an expert in the production of breech-rings in just seven months – something that usually took years. After the war, Ruby and her husband John Green emigrated to Canada and she never worked in a factory or engineering again.

MWW Artwork of the Day (3/16/21) Laura Knight (British, 1877–1970) Ruby Loftus Screwing a Breech Ring (1943) Oil on canvas, 86.3 x 101.9 cm. Imperial War Museum, London
Loftus was an outstanding factory worker who had mastered complex engineering skills in a very short space of time, and Knight was commissioned to paint her at work in the factory. Making a Bofors Breech ring was considered the most highly skilled job in the factory, normally requiring eight or nine years training. Loftus was aged 21 at the time of the painting and had no previous factory experience. Her ability to operate the machine presented a considerable publicity coup at the time.
Knight was fascinated by circus artistes and dancers, and she emphasises the balance and posture of her subject at work. Industrial machinery was a wholly new element in Knight's work but her technical accuracy was praised in contemporary reports: Knight, like Loftus, was proving herself in a traditionally male environment.

..... Sam Heughan looks convincing enough brandishing an assault rifle, but never provides any real insight into Tom beyond those vague stabs at what it truly means to live a life of violence. The representative action parts of SAS: Rise of the Black Swan are satisfactory only if you don’t pay it a whole lot of attention.
Our Call: SKIP IT. Outlander superfans might clamor to see Heughan in a contemporary setting, but SAS: Rise of the Black Swan is otherwise too basic an action movie to warrant a rewarding watch.

Ruben Loftus Cheek
Request: Hi Love your writing! Can you do one where Ruben has taught your child a rude word like one that offends you and you get really upset trying to explain to Ruben why you don’t want your son saying it. Thank you if you do it!
Ruben always annoyed you with how often he was inappropriate in front of your child. He had caught on and would now only do it to annoy you. It wasn’t a surprise when you would breastfeed and Ruben would make a sexual comment or you’d be changing and he’d comment on your post pregnancy body and how it was better than before. So it wasn’t a surprise when you got home from work and your toddler asked you what ‘boobies’ were.
“One second baby okay?” you tell your son, kissing his cheek and placing him back on the ground from your hip. Your son toddled back to the mini ball pit that his dad has set up for him to play with for the day. “RUBEN!” You shout taking off your jacket and work heels. Ruben knew he was in trouble. Not only did you use an accusatory tone but you didn’t call him Ruby or Rubes.
“Hello my gorgeous lovely wife, you look just as amazing as the first time I met you.” He stayed with a large smile on his face. You immidiately knew he was guilty. Oh he was so guilty. You look at him with a stare before you hear the bathroom door behind you. “Oh hey Y/N” Mason says walking towards you and your husband. You put on a smile before turning back to Ruben.
“So are either of you going to tell me why, before my son gave me a welcome home kiss, he asked me what ‘boobies’ were?” Both Ruben and Mason smirked. Your eyebrows raised and you kissed your teeth. “Are there three children in this house today cause I swear I only pushed ONE lovely innocent little boy out my vagina and he JUST ASKED ME WHAT BOOBIES WERE SO EXPLAIN YOURSELVES NUMBERS 12 AND 19!” You near scream getting angry at them compromising how pure your son was at age 2.
“Hey hey baby chill it was just a joke. We didn’t mean for him to hear it. I refered to his lunch as your...you knows milk and he won’t stop saying it now” Ruben explained gesturing to your chest as you use a stern glare on him. Mason stands there awkwardly before speaking up “Listen it’s really my fault I kept laughing when he was repeating it and he would laugh at me laughing. I’ve caused enough damage I’m gonna head. Sorry.” He explains giving you a hug and dubbing Ruben.
You wait till you hear your front door shut and turn back to look at your husband. “Oh I so fffrrreakin told you so. I told you stop speaking like that or he’s gonna grow up thinking it’s okay and I will NOT have a sexist misogynistic objectifying child Ruben. I will not!” you are on the verge of tears. “Heyyy hey baby chill my love. He’s only young. He won’t remember the word by tomorrow okay? I promise i’ll stop being stupid around him. I forget how easily he picks things up now.” he attempts to calm you down, pulling your head to his chest and giving your forehead soft kisses.
“He’s gonna be the best man you’ve ever met. He’s gonna say please and thank you. He’s gonna let other people go through the door before him. He’s gonna donate money to charity. He’s gonna coach young kids football as soon as he’s too old to play. He’s gonna look after his mumma. But most importantly, he’s gonna treat every women he meets like they are golden. And it’s my job as his dad to teach him that. I vowed that to you when I found out our little baby was a boy remember? And that’s not gonna change now he’s older. Are you crying?” he laughs and his chest shakes.
“ofcourse I’m crying I love when you speak nicely about Y/S/N. I love when you’re a big softy” You smile up at him and give him a gently kiss smiling at the end. “Sorry I overreacted I just don’t think the world needs anymore immature boys. Bunch of football fans whistled at me today on the way to my car today and I don’t know I guess it just makes me uncomfortable. Like I’m being watched” You try to explain. “i’m sorry that happened. I love you and our crazy little one” he saying looking over the breakfast bar to your son throwing the plastic ball all over the joint living room. He was still learning.

Love Is a Losing Game
Chapter 10
previous chapter 09
Jose walked down the tunnel to see Eric, Pedro and Ed all huddled together while YN was sat by herself on the stairs. He just simply walked past them and straight over to her.
‘YN, what’s the matter?’ He asks sitting beside her, noticing that she moved away from him.
‘Is all footballers twats, or is it the ones who works under you?’ She snaps, at him.
He clears his throat and rubs his hands together.
‘Probably just the ones under me’ he jokes, chuckling but then stopping pretty quickly.
She clears her throat as she quickly wipes the tears that was threatening to fall. ‘When do we leave?’
Jose couldn’t lie with him being able to smell alcohol on her, he took her arm stopping her from standing up. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her two towards him. Kissing her forehead as she cried silently.
Dele who wasn’t in the team for the game but decided to come along, he noticed the little interaction. His face softened as he saw you have alittle cry with the Portuguese trying to make you feel better. He watched as he muttered something making her laugh, he gave her a hanky-chief which she dabbed her tears away.
Dele noticed the brunette bouncing towards him, he managed to look away from YN to Ruby as she wrapped her arms around him and smashed her lips onto his. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in closer. Eric grimaced seeing the little show that they were showing and then noticed YN who looked broken, she stood up and walked the opposite way leaving Jose. He stood up and snapped at Dele and Ruby before walking towards Eric.
‘Keep an eye on her’ he muttered in Portuguese before walking away.
Eric stayed pretty close to the photographer, even standing up for her when she was getting a bollocking from Pedro for not getting a single photo from the game. He could tell she wasn’t listening but that didn’t stop him from telling her to fix up.
Her eyes fell onto Dele as he walked onto the plane with Ruby hanging off his arm. The two were whispering and giggling, she rolled her eyes knowing that they were putting it on as he was nowhere near as funny as that.
Dele had a soft smirk on his lips as he whispered in the brunettes ear, in the corner of his eye he watched as Yn couldn’t help but keep glaring at them.
It wasn’t long until both the girls were fast asleep, Ruby resting on Dele’s shoulder while YN curled up into a small ball. Eric wrapped his jacket over her, and couldn’t help but notice how innocent and fragile she looked.
He managed to lose her as they came into land, he told her he’d take her home but she managed to run off when he turned his. She even managed to hop into Eriksen’s taxi before he did, leaving the Dane pissed.
...
The Loftus-Cheek’s where all in the living room after having one of their family dinner evenings. There was a sudden banging on the door with Ruben getting up saying he’s got it.
He walked out into the hallway and spotted YN’s outline through the frosted window, he quickly got to the door as she was pacing on the doorstep.
As he opened the door he was met by her soft eyes as she froze in her spot.
‘I wasn’t expecting you to turn up demanding sex again’ he joked.
She stayed quiet and just starting hitting him on the chest repeatedly as she started to let her emotion out and cried.
‘So you like just fucking with girls emotions or just mine?’
He kept himself shielded as she kept hitting him.
‘I loved you, and I was pregnant and you decided that you wanted a career more than me!’ She whispers suddenly stopping. ‘More than us’ she mutters.
She looks up at him showing the tears that sat in her eyes, making her vision go blurry.
‘Wait? You were pregnant?’
‘I was going to tell you the night you kicked me out’ she muttered a single tear falling from her cheek. ‘I haven’t told anyone and it kills me everyday’ her face crumbles.
He steps towards her but she hits him again.
‘I hope all of this is as good as you hoped it’ll be, all this success all the girls throwing themselves at you. I hope it’s worth it’
‘Why didn’t you tell me I was going to be- I deserved to know!’ His voice became angry.
She frowned. ‘When? When you were telling me that none of this meant a thing? When you telling me that you were having it off with anyone girl behind my back?’
A loud slap was heard as everything came to a stand still between the two of them, YN put her hand to her cheek that was stinging as Ruben instantly went from angry to sadness.
His family came out and realised what had happened, YN was backing away from them as she didn’t drop eye contact with Ruben before she ran away.
....
John looked over the club as he took a sip of his beer, there was a lot of girls to choose from to be tonight’s muse. His eyes ran through all the girls and instantly stopped on one that looked familiar. He narrowed his eyes as he watched as she danced on the table with a few people trying to get her down.
That’s when it hit him, it was YN. He looked around to try and find Dele or Ruben but he couldn’t. He instantly placed his drink down and rushed through the crowd, ignoring the attempts of some girls as soon as he got out of the VIP section.
‘YN, come down from there’ he shouted above the music.
After a few attempts he managed to pull her down, which made her stumble. He grabbed ahold of her waist as she looked up, her smile going big as sang out his name.
‘What you doing here?’ She asked, pointing harshly on his chest.
‘Injured’ he shrugged.
She furrowed her brows at him not getting what he meant. ‘And that means time to celebrate?’
He laughed, and nodded. He took her hand and took her up to the VIP section where Kyle and some more City players.
‘Anyway what are you doing here? Alone?’ He asked handing her a drink.
She instantly gulps it down and shivers as the strong liquor runs down her throat. ‘Trying to forget’
‘Forget what?’ He pressed.
‘Well if I talk about it I’m not forgetting’ she mutters before giving him a playful look making him laugh.
It was early hours in the morning and YN was still partying with last seasons champions.
John opened the door to the bathroom and push her into the cubicle with him, as their mouths moved perfectly insync with eachother. He pinned her up against the wall harshly making her hiss slightly, he didn’t miss a beat and picked her up making her roll her legs around him. He hissed as she whimpered as he thrusts inside her.
Her arms were wrapped around his shoulder as she moved her hips as he thrusts inside her making her take him all.
‘Oh fuck’ she moaned, as he bite down on her bottom lip as he quickened the pace.
Neither of them cared that people could hear them, they were too busy getting lost in eachothers body. He had a strong grip of her as her mouth nibbled at his skin.
He lets out a strong grunt as he feels how amazing she feels, her wet clenching pussy will definitely be the death of him.

Postscript - Hegel’s Trowel: Recovery Story
Tumblr media
Elaine Scarry in The Body in Pain: The Making and Unmaking of the World writes about how tools and manufactured objects are extensions of the body into the world and thus ways of knowing it. The book identifies the ‘presence of the human body in the artefact’, and by homology the remaking of the human body into a concomitant made object/artefact. Making and constructive working, then, are crucial elements within any engagement of the body and the mind with the world, and of knowing the world through the body and the body through the world. That is to say, she supports Hegel’s doctrine of the self-creating power of work and making.
Scarry writes of how, unlike political torture and violent war - which are investigated in the first half of her text as extreme examples of hyper-negative un-making – transformative therapeutic positive making is involved in the re-making of the world, and as such, the reworking of pain, and in this making human subjects relieve the sufferings of contemporary and historical oppression and conflict. Published in 1985, The Body in Pain might also be useful in discussing the micro tortuousness and conflict found in the everyday world and how simple acts of making and creating can transform these pains. Covid 19 has brought non-conflict societies closer to the extreme world of unmaking in which the body is under complete attack.  In which case everyday making will become, when we can return to making, a material and symbolic tool in our rehabilitation. Rescuing, repairing, restoring creativity and constructive activity to their proper path. Paradoxically, The Body in Pain argues the vocabulary of “creating,” “inventing,” “making,” is not, in the 20C, for some illogical ideological reason a morally resonant one. More than this, “material making” is ‘ethically neutral’ or conceived as an ‘amoral phenomenon’. But, she continues, ‘an unspoken question begins to arise’:
‘Given that the deconstruction of creation is present in the structure of one event which is widely recognised as being as close to being an absolute of immorality (torture), and given that the deconstruction of creation is again present in the structure of a second event regarded as morally problematic by everyone and as radically immoral by some (war), is it not peculiar that the very thing being deconstructed -- creation – does not in its intact form have a moral claim on us that is as high as the others’ is low, that the action of creating is not, for example, held to be bound up with justice in the way those other events are bound up with injustice, that it (the mental, verbal, or material process of making the world) is not held to be centrally entailed in the elimination of pain as the unmaking of the world is held to be entailed in pain’s infliction? The morality of creating, of course, can be inferred from the immorality of uncreating […] That we ordinarily perceive it as empty of ethical content is  itself a signal to us of how faulty and fragmentary our understanding of creation is.’
The Silk Mill workshop has now returned to making the Museum of Making museum. Post-covid-19 lockdown.
