"Many women of nonsamurai status worked outside the house, especially before marriage. Encyclopedias published at the end of the seventeenth century and beginning of the eighteenth listed more than one hundred kinds of work performed by women. Occupations ranged from seamstress to field hand, shellfish diver, laundress, carpenter, strolling book lender, teahouse waitress, bathhouse attendant, prostitute, nun, masseuse, wet nurse, cook, and peddler of incense sticks, straw sandals, flowering plants, and tofu. The greatest number of women found work as maids and household servants in well-to-do samurai and merchant households and as spinners, weavers and dyers in emerging textile trades. It is impossible to know what proportion of women worked, but some calculations suggest that one quarter to one half of the females in various neighbourhoods in Kyoto and Osaka at the beginning of the eighteenth century were servants."

Photograph of Women Working at a Bell System Telephone Switchboard
Record Group 86: Records of the Women's BureauSeries: Women Working In Industry
This black and white photograph from 1943 shows a wall of telephone equipment.  A line of about two dozen women telephone operators wearing headsets sit before the equipment connecting calls with wires that they plug into various exchange receptacles.  Two other women are standing behind the line of seated women, also working.  One is handing a note to a seated operator while another is talking into a headset.  Small plates with the name of a city on each are placed above the telephone exchanges at regular intervals.  Above the equipment is a sign listing cities in North and South America.

ngl the mess it made of the backgrounds is ghastly, I need to work out how to enhance images without ruining those details. But the main subjects came out relatively well.

Hey! I live in a kinda conservative place, and am planning on going into construction as a queer woman. How do you get over the fear of like, being out and open?
It is hard to predict how each set of co workers are going to act about having a woman in their midst.
When I have had to work among men who are clearly uncomfortable I get them to talk about themselves. Families, hobbies and what they know about the job. People in general like to share their knowledge. Most guys on a job will gladly show you what they know if you ask and are willing to listen. I have learned a great deal from the oldest men on a work crew.
The majority of people, including construction workers, just want to do their jobs and go home. There are always some who want drama and to stir up shit-assholes are everywhere. If you say good morning, show up on time and do your job and are reliable most coworkers will not really care about your sexuality. If they were apprentices or have been in the trades for any decent amount of time they have almost certainly worked with butches or non conforming straight women.
Being confident and comfortable in who you are leaving you much less vulnerable to judgement. No point in teasing someone who is find with who they are.
Look into apprentices or union entry level jobs that are led by women. Unions have long been on the forefront of trying to get more women involved in the trades. They are often very Democratic organizations because that is the party they recognized as most likely to support unions and their workers.
You will be just fine and if you make yourself a valuable asset to the team by learning and listening you might find you are well respected.

The publication Helga Paris: Women at Work will make the most important series of the German photographer Helga Paris accessible to a broad international audience. With a unique sensibility, her photographs chronicle the everyday life of her times through images of people and spaces. For the series Women at the Clothing Factory VEB Treffmodelle Berlin Paris spent several weeks at a state-owned clothing factory in 1984. During this time, she shot more than 1.500 photographs from which she chose just 50 powerful images. By gaining close familiarity with female workers and their environment, she produced touching portraits that reflect the serenity and beauty of the sitters in brief moments of tranquility.  Helga Paris (born 1938 in Goleniów, Poland) is a German photographer. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Akademie der Künste and Between Bridges in Berlin, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Kunsthalle Malmoe, and the Tate Modern in London. In 2004 she was awarded the Hannah-Hoech-Preis, in 2019 she was awarded the Cultural Prize of the German Photographic Association (DGPh).
