Ruby was a bit surprised when she finally noticed what happened. If anyone ever asked her what Neo would do five years down the line, now less murder-y and questionably good, Ruby wouldn’t have known what to say. Really, if anything she probably would’ve questioned them on an outcome she hoped for but didn’t really think would happen. Anyone could change, but they needed to want that change and Neo always seemed happy to her just as she was. (Something she learned later was mostly true. For someone with a semblance that let her disguise herself, Neo was never interested in being anything except herself.) Anyway, this was definitely not what she would expect Neo to be up to.

It started with a small rose bush in a windowsill. Then there were peace lilies in the kitchen, devil's ivy in the living room, lavender in their bedroom. Ferns and succulents and mint and philodendron. A weeping fig tree, some type of flowering cacti, a desert rose. Plus so many other plants Ruby couldn't name. All potted and growing throughout the house. Now, as Ruby looked around the virtual arboretum her house had become, she had to wonder how it only just now dawned on her. Neo was a gardener with a vibrant love for plants. That was something she'd learned when they first started their relationship. And somehow Ruby never noticed just how many plants she'd brought in.

She waded her way through a few small bushes to reach where Neo was clipping branches. It was to a tree she didn’t recognize. But the leaves were a dark red like the trees of Forever Fall with small, pink blossoms littering them. "It's like us," Ruby hummed and Neo gave the slightest surprised flinch, hands tightening on the sheers, and her cheeks coloured a moment after. "Sorry, I didn't mean to walk so quietly."

Neo looked back at her with a glare. All Ruby could do in response was smile, because she knew Neo wasn’t actually angry at her. With a sigh, Neo held out a few branches, held together by black thread.

“Trash or keep?” Ruby asked, though the thread gave her a pretty good idea. They were good branches, full of the little pink flowers and the dark red leaves. A sweet smell came from them. Neo held her hand up like a cup and Ruby nodded. "I can do that." Though Ruby didn't move, content to watch Neo care for her plants.

"They're beautiful," Ruby said. Though she couldn't see her face, she could sense Neo preen at the words through the subtle shifting of her shoulders; the way her confident hands stretched for bad branches and trimmed them pointedly. It made Ruby smile. Though she definitely never would've expected this exact outcome, she was glad for it.

"I love you," Ruby said and Neo looked back at her again. Neo's expression softened. She smiled and nodded and when she held her hand out, Ruby took it so she could give it three squeezes. I love you.

She was really glad for it.
