The Duality of Woman: Anais Nin
Tumblr media
Vogue Magazine, Anais Nin talks about being a woman, 15 October 1971
Anais Nin is a woman of duality. It's been a well-known fact for those who know or love her that she is truly a two-sided coin. She said it herself in her book Henry and June,
"I will always be the virgin prostitute, the perverse angel, the two-faced sinister and saintly woman"(bookquoters.com).
From her intense marriages to two different men on opposite sides of the country, to her literary career, to even her personal reflections and essays, Nin was a figure bathed in duality. How does one split the image of Anais Nin ideally in half? You just have to find the seam between diarist and eroticist.
The Diarist
Anais Nin is most well-loved by her adoring fans because of her published diary. As a young girl, Nin wrote her father a letter begging him to return to the family he had abandoned (The Anais Nin Foundation). This was the beginning of Nin's diary, which would be published in seven volumes, with four unexpurgated diaries later appearing after their original publication.
Her diaries were incredibly personal, full of secrets and thoughts she never thought would come to light. The biggest secret within these diaries was that she was married to two different men simultaneously, something she would remove from the diaries upon initial publication. Years later, Nin compiled the removed sections into one volume, the first of her unexpurgated diaries. It was called Henry and June, and detailed the letters and writings the two shared. The duality of Nin stretched throughout every aspect of her life.
These highly intimate journals struck twentieth-century American women directly in their souls. As one journalist famously put it in an article for The Conversation,
Anaïs Nin dreamed, in all senses. She dreamed of lives and possibilities. She dreamed in slumber and allowed her dreams to leak into the day. As I regularly committed the cardinal social sin of recounting my dreams over breakfast, she seemed a soulmate across oceans and generations (Gorman).
These teenage girls and their daydreams were instantly hooked on Nin's likeminded wonder and splendid prose. She became a sensation after the diary publications almost instantly, giving her a decent seat in literary history.
It wouldn't be long until something else gave her another boost of fame.

The Eroticist
In the late 1970s, Anais Nine published three volumes of erotic short fiction, each containing approximately ten stories. Despite their popularity, the term erotic is a tad inappropriate. Although she wasn't a follower of the transgressive art movement like Georges Bataille, Anais Nin's erotic stories are more disturbing and controversial than actually arousing.
Nin wrote about such topics as sexual abuse, incest, pedophilia, and other forms of sexual violence within her stories. These works would go on to shock and challenge readers even today (Maza).

Here's an idea for a full fanfiction story I have in mind:
"Sparrows", a crossover and Avengers team-up between female characters from animated media.
It's a reboot with all of them that places them all in the same time but also keeps the settings ageless where they could be taking place in any time instead of deciding on a time period.
The cast of characters:
June Darby a.k.a. Arcee (Sumalee Montano)
Katherine Washington a.k.a. Airachnid (Gina Torres)
Elisa Maza (Salli Richardson)
Dominique Destine a.k.a. Demona (Marina Sirtis)
Helen Traux a.k.a. Elastigirl (Holly Hunter)
Violet Parr (Sarah Vowell)
Gwendolyn "Gwen" Goldenthal (Meagan Smith)
Charmcaster (Kari Wahlgren)
Jamika Summers (Vanessa Bell Calloway)
Dorothea Lynch (Myra J)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Okay @palettesofrenaissance you asked for the details so here they are!
1. How many works do you have on ao3? 53
2. What's your total ao3 word count? 805,111 (Aiming for a million)
3. What fandoms do you write for? I started with Star Wars, TMNT and now Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
4. Top five fics by kudos:
Okay, That's Not Suppose to be There  396 Kudos
Heaven Created You for Love  254 Kudos
Loved In The Flicker Of A Song 225 Kudos
A Soldier and A Maiden Cross Paths One Night.... 224 Kudos
But The Memory Remains 205 Kudos
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes, whenever I can.
6. What is the fic your wrote with the angstiest ending? Filial Piety It dealt with adults Cass and AJ burying their stepdad Bucky who lingered too long after the people he loved passed away. I would call it a bittersweet ending.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? All my stories have happy endings. I think Heaven Created You for Love has the best ending since I dragged my leads through years of angst, so I think they deserved their happy ending more.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Occasionally a critique comes out but I'm too middle aged to care so I just thank them for their opinion, politely disagree and move on.
9. Do you write smut? LOL!!!!! I ought to be embarrassed about the amount of smut I write. Sometimes I think I do too much but then I remember something Zoe Saldana mentioned which was that sex should be celebrated and enjoyed, not repressed and shamed, and I agree. People have a right to enjoy smut.
10. Craziest crossover: None
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No, I had someone try to write an alternate to one of my stories but it's never been completed. Shame.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, but I'm up for the challenge.
14. All time favorite ship? Goliath/Eliza Maza, Spock/Uhura, Leonardo/Karai (2012), Bucky Barnes/Sarah Wilson
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I don't post unless I have it nearly done. I have a WIP in process, but I'm actively writing it. Many readers know that I am a reliable writer. I didn't use to be though, I had a TMNT story that had a 6 year gap before I finished it!
16. What are your writing strengths? I have no idea. People like my stuff for different reasons, so I can't think of one amazing skill I can boast about.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Tenses, I always try to work on those. Writing half asleep is also a weakness.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language? Not sure what this question means, but I've written dialogue in another language and often I offer no translations mostly because I want my readers to use context clues to figure it out.
19. First fandom you wrote in? Star Wars. Qui-Gon Jinn was my first great love.
20. Favorite fic you've written? I can't choose amongst my works. Every one has a part that I enjoyed writing out.

Do you know what Lafayette’s inheritance of 100,000-130,000 livre would be worth in today’s currency? I’ve read several biographies on him and feel like I’ve never learned what that equivalency is (or if I have, I’ve forgotten!). Thanks!
Dear Anon,
comparing old monetary values to a modern equivalent is always a bit tricky, especially since the livre as well as its follow-up currency, the Franc, are both no longer in use.
Cautious estimates propose that one livre would equal 5 to 15 modern Euro (the Euro and the USD are right now almost at the exact same value). That is a wide range, and these estimates are only really appliable from the 1760’s onwards until the late 1780’s. Prior to that – and especially after that time, what with the begin of the French Revolution, these measures are less appliable.
Harlow Giles Unger proposed in his book Lafayette (published in 2002) that the money La Fayette spend on the American Revolution – a rough estimate of 100.000 Livre, would equal one Million USD in 2002. Unger cited Britannica.com Inc. without mentioning more specific sources. This factor of ten fits in quite well with the 5 to 15 range.
This is by far no exact science or mathematics, but if gives us a rough understanding of the value of money. This understanding is deepened, if we look a prices and wages at the time.
Unskilled labourers would earn an average of 80 livres in the mid-18th century while skilled labourers could average 150 to 200 livres a year. These numbers are highly dependant on the exact year, the city, the skill level of the worker and the sector he was employed in (agricultural workers earned less.) While women worked and earned money as well, they were paid significantly less than their male counterparts. I found this tables quite insightful:

Sarah C. Maza, Servants and masters in eighteenth-century France: the uses of loyalty, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1983, pp. 339-341.
Not an exact number but I hope I could help nonetheless, and I hope you have/had a lovely day!

WHAT WE SEE (Trailer) from I AM HERE on Vimeo.
A film by many. A film about our internal feelings during physical isolation. A document of our time – and how it mirrors who we once were.
It all started with a post on Instagram asking our followers to participate in a collaborative project. The result? People from across the globe sharing their anxieties, hopes and dreams through a series of intimate online interviews. A deep dive into private thoughts amplified by feelings of physical isolation. Candid connections through disconnection. In addition, we received dozens of remotely directed videos of people breathing underneath plastic bags, which helped in the finalization of this piece.
Interestingly enough, a lot of the footage was shot exactly one year before nationwide lockdowns happened in 2020. Individual isolation in our modern world was a concept I felt society at large was already experiencing, but never could we have imagined the immense impact of a simultaneous global scale lock down.
All interviews were recorded online in April 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
All other scenes were shot in Los Angeles / San Francisco in April 2019, and in Berlin and a variety of global living-rooms in April 2020 as well.

Or, à quoi correspond ce secteur géographique ? « Qui va le définir ? Sur quelle base ? » interroge Dominique Noguères. Et très concrètement, « comment va-t-on pouvoir contrôler que tel agent de sécurité privé est intervenu un peu au-delà des bâtiments dont il avait la garde ? » ajoute la magistrate Sarah Massoud.

Important black people who have touched me through pop culture:
In honor of Black history month I have decided to write a list of favorites black celebrities, characters, and writers.
Honorary mention first to Levar Burton for helping to instill in me a life-long love of reading.   I have no category specific for someone like him so I’m naming him first. _____________________________ Favorite male black superhero:  Blade: The Vampire Hunter. Favorite female black superhero:  Storm. Favorite black male fantasy character:  Shadow Moon in American Gods by Neil Gaiman.  Stephen from Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Lemuel Bridger from Midnight Texas.  Isaac in Castlevania (Netflix animated series), And The Marquis de Carabas from Neverwhere.    Favorite black female fantasy character:  Hope in Sandman: Overture.   (She was blue skinned but very obviously modeled after a little black girl.) Favorite black mythological (or religious) figures (female):  The Goddess Isis (North African). and Saint Sarah (Roma).  Favorite black mythological (or religious) male figures: Anansi (African)  Favorite black male horror character:  The Candyman.   And Lemuel Bridger from Midnight Texas. Favorite black female horror character:  Belle in Fright Night Part 2.    Favorite black male cartoon character:  Goliath from Disney’s Gargoyles (I know he’s technically a Gargoyle), and Winston from The Real Ghostbusters.  (I hate when people call him a token.)  And Isaac in Castlevania (Netflix animated series.)  Favorite black female cartoon character: Elisa Maza (mixed race) Disney’s Gargoyles.   As I mentioned elsewhere on this list, Elisa is VERY important.  She’s one of the best (if not the best) written female protagonist I’ve ever seen in a cartoon.    Favorite black female writer:  D. L. Warner (author of Demon Under Glass)     (Actually considering my recent disappointments, she's my favorite female writer, period, at the moment.)
Favorite black male writer:    Kevin Grevioux (Yes, I actually liked I, Frankenstein. Shut up.),  Alexandre Dumas,  and possibly Aesop (debatable about his racial origin)
Favorite black Broadway actress:  Daphne Rubin-Vega  Favorite black Broadway actor:  Norm Lewis. (I first heard him in The Little Mermaid as King Triton. I believe he went on to be the first black Erik in Phantom of the Opera.)  Favorite black male voice actor: Keith David (He’d probably still be listed here if this list wasn’t strictly black actors.)   Favorite black voice actress:   Salli Richardson-Whitfield (probably my favorite voice actress in general outside of Idina Menzel.  This one is very important because even now Elisa Maza in Disney’s Gargoyles is the best female protagonist I’ve ever seen.) and Cree Summer. Favorite black male actors:  Keith David (I like him enough to list him twice), Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier and when I was younger, Will Smith.  Peter Mensah. Idris Elba. Isaiah Amir Mustafa. And Ariyon Bakare.   Favorite black actress:  (A few deceased ones come to mind, like a certain beloved catwoman with a fantastic pur but I’ll just list the living).   Angela Bassett and Octavia Spencer and Lesley-Ann Brandt (mixed racial background).   Favorite black male singers:  Michael Jackson, Prince, Norm Lewis (again).   Favorite black female singer:  She’s getting up there in age but Tina Turner. And  Anika Noni Rose.     Note: If any non-binary fit any of these categories they would be listed too as both or neither depending on the preference of the person.  I have listed one trans person but didn’t feel the need to point out which one was trans.

WHAT WE SEE from I AM HERE on Vimeo.
