Unit 01 Blog
Since I was a child, my fascination with nature and the animals within have been a constant thread in my life. The goal of becoming a Veterinarian has been something I’ve dreamt of becoming since my senior kindergarten graduation. Growing up in Vaughan, a very busy city in the GTA, it was important to my family that we made time to appreciate nature. We seized every opportunity to connect with the natural world through walks, trips, hikes, adventures and our cottage. Growing up, the clearest memory I have of this is from my grandmother. When I was in my younger years of elementary school, my grandmother used to pick me up everyday from school. Since the street would get so busy and filled with cars, she would always make the choice to walk, taking the time to appreciate the nature surrounding her. After picking me up and walking halfway home, my grandmother and I would stop at the bottom of my street where there was a big rock. Here, we’d both sit and enjoy the snack she would prepare for me. The walk home from school was not just a walk home, it became a daily adventure that I would look forward to day after day. This was not the only adventure my grandmother and I would take on. We would often take trips to our families cottage, located in Tiny Beaches Ontario. At the cottage we’d walk through the town and along the beach appreciating the scenery around us. Picking flowers, planting vegetables and gathering the ones which were ready to eat were always on my grandmother's to-do list. Helping through these small tasks were some of the ways my relationship with nature evolved. I wanted to learn more, do more and see more through nature. As I grew older, and became busier, I always made sure to make time for my grandmother and our trips to explore nature.
In May of 2023, I took a trip to Costa Rica to participate in Veterinary volunteer spay and neuter clinics. Not only was this trip an amazing learning experience, I was lucky enough to be exposed to diverse landscapes and unique sceneries. Since this trip was directed at my educational goals, my grandmother wasn’t able to join me. Due to this, I filled her in daily with many images and videos allowing them to tell the story of this transformative journey, highlighting the beauty of nature and the impact of global initiatives. One specific shared love my grandmother and I have is the love for butterflies, with our favourite being the Morpho Butterfly. Although I was not exactly sure if this was the exact species, seeing this butterfly reminded me of my grandmother. I would say that my grandmother is most responsible for fostering my love for the outdoors, and for this providing me my “sense of palace”

Two of my favourite pictures captured by myself on my Costa Rica volunteer trip.
Furthermore, as I thought back on the times I spent with my grandmother I realized the enormous influence that nature and animals have on our wellbeing. This insight has served as the foundation for my dedication to provide compassionate, all-encompassing veterinary care. My goal as a veterinarian is to combine my love of the natural world with my career aspirations. In addition to providing care for specific creatures, I'm dedicated to supporting sustainable practices, taking part in conservation efforts, and sharing my knowledge to encourage people to value and preserve the environment. I want to use the route I've chosen to honour the values I gained from those treasured walks with my grandma and have a significant impact on the environment and animal welfare.

Nature, My Sweet Escape
Nature and I have had a complicated relationship over the past few years. Nature brings me a sense of peace but it also gets me sick quite often :(. In my leisure time, I find myself spending time outside whether it be taking a walk, sitting on a bench near a park or even just laying on the grass and staring at the sky (Beck et al., 2018). The reason I do this is because I feel grounded, it is my sweet escape when things are collapsing in my life (Beck et al., 2018).
Tumblr media
What’s funny is, my grandfather’s job was based on working with nature as well. When things weren’t going too well at home he would spend extra hours at work in order to feel connected to nature since it helped him feel at peace. My grandfather’s job consisted of constructing railway tracks but to him it had a deeper meaning. This construction of railways to him meant that he was giving back to our society and also helped pave the path for the future (Beck et al., 2018). He saw how amazing it was that our environment gave individuals an easier way to commute. Due to my grandfather appreciating and being so connected with nature, I have learned to appreciate nature more. When I see trees I don’t just see a trunk with some leaves on it, I see a form of nature allowing us the chance to breathe in clean air.
Tumblr media
Although I have an amazing relationship with nature now, as a child I hated being outdoors due to the weather constantly changing. One minute it would be warm and the next it would be freezing which caused me to get sick very often. Although the weather is still not perfect, I am able to look past it and appreciate what it has to offer. Aside from my grandfather, the other thing that helped me appreciate nature much more is COVID. Due to COVID everyone was isolated at home, and this deteriorated my mental health. I didn’t realize how much I missed going on hikes or walks around the neighbourhood even though bugs would eat me alive. Now every opportunity I get, I spend it outdoors.
Tumblr media
My grandfather has always offered me a “raison d’être” (sense of place) by explaining the historical significance behind several landmarks, amplifying their beauty in my eyes (Beck et al., 2018). When we went to Vancouver my grandfather told me the entire history behind Grouse Mountain. He explained how in the 1800s hiking up this mountain took around three to four days. He explained all the attempts from entrepreneurs to make this mountain a major attraction for individuals on which we can now ski, snowshoe, snowmobile etc. In some way, we can also see how my grandfather took on the task of being an interpreter. He changed my interpretation of this mountain and enriched the experience and its beauty for my family and I (Beck et al., 2018).

Experiencing Nature
When I think “relationship”, I think of how I feel in its presence. In nature I feel peace, tranquility, connectedness, purpose, among other things. Since those feelings are positive, I feel as though my relationship with nature is also positive.
While growing up, I was fortunate to always have some sort of connection with nature, consistently exposed. I live in a suburban area with farms and forests surrounding, I frequently try to visit my cottage on Rose Island, and I spent most of my childhood surrounded by nature in the Muskoka’s at my grandparents, camping, boating, hiking, gardening, swimming, snowshoeing, skiing. I always loved to ‘escape’ from the busy complex world with expectations and still hold these values today when I need a break from the world.
Tumblr media
I feel like my relationship with nature has gotten stronger as I grow older and reflect on those fond memories of where I fell in love with being outside and watching animals. I realize how lucky I was to experience ‘breaths of fresh air’ that nature is to me, different from new generations’ love for technology. I often find my time spent in nature is periodic or short-lived, but it is always there when I need that ‘breath of fresh air’. I often try to spend time at my cottage or to go for a quick hike near my home. Although I often find myself missing out on going to nature, nature often comes to me. When my grandpa passed, owls showed up, perhaps as a symbol of him. Anniversaries, birthdays, during holidays and hardships we see owls everywhere around us, coming up to our doors, landing on our cars, and swooping in near us. I feel as though this is a reminder of him and love for wildlife in the natural world and find this to remind me when I need to find a natural place to spend some time in, ensuring my relationship with nature is everlasting.
Tumblr media
I think I received my “sense of place” from my family making memories and passing the love of nature on to me at my grandparent’s cottage. It was never a place to ‘tame’ nature but to embrace it as we made sure to plant apple trees for deer and milkweed for monarchs. So, I guess that I would thank my grandma and grandpa for giving me that “sense of place”, the location that I have a special connection with and the love for nature. My parents also largely influenced my love and curiosity surrounding nature. My mom’s love for marine biology and hunger to teach critical thinking about how incredible the natural world is to sustain a wide variety of life caused the interest I had for nature to develop. My dad’s love for movement and getting my family that ‘breath of fresh air’ in the nature I have grown up to love allowed exposure to our natural environment throughout my life. I cherish family deeply, so when all the fond memories of family time are spent in nature, it’s hard not to love it!
Tumblr media
There are so many more experiences that I want to talk about, and it’s difficult to define your relationship with nature to a few key moments! Nevertheless, this is all I have space for!
Until next time😁

Positioned gracefully above a serene man-made lake, the modern tropical pavilion emerges as a defining landmark, encapsulating the very essence of place. Its unique tall roof form, inspired by traditional Filipino architecture, not only serves functional purposes but also becomes a visual anchor, drawing the eye and evoking a sense of belonging. This architectural feature, while contemporary in its execution, resonates deeply with the cultural tapestry of the region. In the vast landscape of eco-tourism, where establishing a distinct brand identity is paramount, this pavilion stands as a beacon. It's not just a structure; it's a statement, a testament to how architecture can craft a sense of place, intertwining the past's rich narratives with the present's innovative aspirations. #tropicaldesign #filipinoarchitecture #sustainablepavilion #ecotourismdesign #senseofplace #roofinnovation #lakeviewpavilion #culturalblend #modernmeetsheritage #architecturalgem #architecture #architecturelovers #architecturedesign #pavilion #architecturemodel #architectureproject #allofarchitecture #tropicalarchitecture #architectureph #architectureconcept

“Terrorists are like a fly that tries to destroy a china shop. The fly is so weak that it cannot budge even a single teacup. So it finds a bull, gets inside its ear and starts buzzing. The bull goes wild with fear and anger, and destroys the china shop. This is what happened in the Middle East in the last decade. Islamic fundamentalists could never have toppled Saddam Hussein by themselves. Instead they enraged the USA by the 9/11 attacks, and the USA destroyed the Middle Eastern china shop for them. Now they flourish in the wreckage.” — ‘Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow’ by Yuval Noah Harari (@yuval_noah_harari) #YuvalNoahHarari #HomoDeus #Terrorism #CounterTerrorism #UrbanDesign #JeffSpeck #WalkableCity #Walkability #SenseOfPlace #Streetscape #BuiltEnvironment #CityPlanning #BehaviorialEconomics (at Phoenix, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqJqtylPfFG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"There are plenty of overt references to the landscape as well, of course, starting right off the bat, with the frenetic fuzz rock of “My Blood Runs Through This Land,” invoking the rocks and the water and the incredible yearning you feel when you’re far away from the people and places you love before gradually climaxing like a rare Washington lightning storm. At other times, she conjures images of dark, primordial forests, like on album highlight “Treeline,” with its graceful throb, or “Salmon Stinta” and “On the River” bringing to mind a lazy, swaying river." Writing Exercise Prompt: You work in a Maximum Security Prison for Mythical Creatures.
Her headphones sat just a little too snug on her skull as she carried the mop and bucket along, boots clomping mutely against the faintly glowing floor. Inside, her feet were growing damp. Tol grimaced and stopped for a second, letting the bucket down.
To her left, she noticed, that sunlight shafts were beginning to stretch like stems of peonies bringing illumination all the way down to the bottom of the Well.  She half smiled. “Break time” she said aloud, feeling the words leave her mouth but not hearing them.
She’d managed to get nearly two thirds of the walkway washed. Better than she’d done yesterday. Tol leaned on the handle of the mop and admired her progress.  The faintly purple path spiraled down behind her gleaming in its new wash. The Well that separated Cell Block A from Cell Block B was full of floating moats. Dust. Pollen. Fancy sparkles from some of the newer residents who hadn’t figured out that blowing their power was futile here.
She rubbed her hand against the coveralls, chasing away the ache the thin metal handle had pressed into her palm and reached down, catching the little loop on the back of the left boot. Half bent she tugged it so the heel thished faintly against the three layers of sock inside.
Out of the corner of her right eye she saw the faint pulse of green vapor snaking towards her head and ducked but the tendril still snagged the bridge of the headset and yanked it away.  She snatched after it, turning towards the source and a lovely vision swam before her eyes.
A maiden, pure and untouched sat demurely at the mouth of her cell, robed in purple and scarlet.  The headset hovering just inside the pale blue walls of the cell.
The girl began to sing, her throat vibrating with the effort, and her fingers beginning to weave a web of movement in time with the sound.  For a moment Tol just stood still, feeling her pulse jumping in her throat. The girl opened her eyes, and their gazes met.  Glowing pink spheres stared directly into her own.  She swallowed. A vision of her hand on the touch pad faintly keying something in snapped into her minds eye.  The finger movements were vague, but the impression of urgency was there, making her stomachache.   But her stretched itself, flexing its claws and stretching its drake-cut wings, and then swatted aside the beguiling siren-song as if it were nothing more than a icthus swimming about its belly scoots. The urgency bled away replaced with a faint rumble of hunger. She blinked several times.
Then came a rough staccato bark from the opposite side of the Well. Tol felt her grin tip.
“May I have my headset please?” She asked.
The girl who hissed, pulling back her delicate pale lips to reveal a mouth with far too many teeth crammed into the tiny maw. “RELEASE ME MORTAL” the words pounded. Tol blinked.
“No, I’m not going to do that.” The pink orbs widened.
“You git” came the familiar, sardonic voice from across the way “She’s tone deaf. None of our wiles work on her. It’s why they   hired the plain bastard.”  Tol held out her hand.
“He’s incredibly rude, but he’s also right. I am a tone-deaf plain bastard. Now, may I have my headset, please” She asked again, trying not to smile.  “I’d rather not write up an incident report on my break.” The creature hunched its shoulders and then with a sudden movement the long fingered hands, no longer at all maidenly, snapped the set band in half and threw the pieces  at Tol’s head. She got her hands up in time. And sighed. “Well, great.”
“You didn’t ask her to give them back in one piece” the voice crowed, and she heard the field buzz as he shouldered into it, then slapped his hands in a rude rhythm.
“That’s   true” she called back. “Thanks for the pointer your majesty I will remember to do so in the future.”
“Bastard!”
“Yes, we have in fact established my paternity, your worship. Several years ago, in fact.” She returned.  placing the headset pieces in a coverall pocket and swinging the mop up to rest on her shoulder. “Now” Tol picked up the bucket “If you have no more sweet words for me, I’m going to take my break.” The female screamed and ran her hands up and down the stone wall beside the barred door, Tol winced, bringing her shoulder up towards her ears, and began carefully walking along the sloped floor.

How I Have Developed My Relationship With Nature
My current relationship with nature has improved compared to a couple of years ago. I found since the pandemic has occurred my connection and engagement with nature have grown stronger than before. I have been able to spend more time and learn new ways nature can be apart of our lives. Nature has opened my eyes to a whole new world with many aspects of it I have not known about.
Learning the necessities of caring for plants has greatly expanded my knowledge and developed my interests. I have recently been growing and caring for my own house plants during the quarantine. Before quarantine, I would end up killing my plants by not paying much attention to them and only watering them when I remembered. Since then I have gained a greater respect for the nature around us, learning ways to maintain, restore, and promote it.
Tumblr media
Picture of a flower I took in my garden.
Since I was a little kid I would enjoy doing many activities involving nature in the outdoors. Going canoeing has always been a favourite activity of mine. The feeling of the drops of the lake water splashing on my legs was so refreshing when the paddles went in the water too deep. Also, the views of the lily pads and turtles in the lake were beautiful. I love to go on hikes through forests seeing a variety of species including little ants to huge willow trees. Recently I went to Blue Mountain and hiked up the mountain for the first time ever. It was exhausting and very hot, but it didn’t stop me from taking pictures and enjoying the trees, streams, and the incredible views from the hike. When I reached the top I never felt the appreciation for the beautiful view I was witnessing. You never realize how beautiful nature is until you experience it and enjoy every minute of it.
Tumblr media
View of the Blue Mountains from a section of the hiking trails. I took this picture.
My grandparent's garden has offered me a “sense of place” for myself to connect to nature and to enjoy the environment. Since I could remember going to the garden has been a monumental place in my family's history and culture. I would always help my grandparent's water and plants the many plants, including cherry trees, lettuce, and tomato plants. The garden itself symbolizes life and joy, varying in many colours and plants. For example, the bright red tomatoes to the yellow sunflowers. To a stranger this garden may seem like every other garden they have seen, however to me it’s a place of love and many fond memories with many loved ones. This little garden represents the hope of nature bringing life and enjoyment to the world.

Questions!
Has your relationship and experience with nature changed since the pandemic?
What outdoor activities do you find really helpful to connect with nature?
Thanks!
