So I just finished The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and was looking up some other people's reviews and analysis to bounce my ideas off of and I found these two. Random fuckening dudes. With such gems as:
• "Shirley Jackson is an okay writer" and the opening paragraph is "not bad"
• There is SOME good writing in the book
• The end fizzles out, as all Shirley Jackson's work does
• There's too much unnecessary content, like the characters talking to each other
• Eleanor came there to disguise herself and kills herself when she's found out
• Eleanor finds something about herself is so unappealing that she kills herself so she can be special
• "The ending needed to be executed better"
• "Why is she afraid at the end??"
HELLO?? DID YOU TWO READ THE BOOK? DID YOU COMPLETE 10TH GRADE ENGLISH?? ARE YOU BOYS FUCKING KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?

i think my primary tip for reading is not very helpful. like with any hobby you have to set time aside for it and that can be hard, but its not a contest. reading is a personal experience and you shouldn’t compare how well you do it compared to others. i have been reading my whole life and grew up with a mother who loves to read, so i have been conditioned to set time aside for it. even if you only read 2 pages or 20 it is still progress.

Mike Flanagan is one of those annoying ass 'horror is about love' bitches. no motherfucker! sometimes horror is about a house being built on crooked foundations, and that being enough to drive you crazy!!! eleanor vance wasn't driven to suicide because her ghost mother loved her too much (what??), it was because she was an unstable, lonely, directionless young woman and being put in a space where her paranoia could be heightened was a terrible idea! and eventually she found she coudnt live without the terror and decided she couldnt live!! and taking her story, a story written by one of if not The Most acclaimed female horror authors of the past century and making it about her BROTHERS??? erasing all jackson's themes and giving eleanor (gay coded) a HUSBAND?????? AND MAKING HER GO CRAZY BECAUSE OF THE DEATH OF SAID HUSBAND????????? KILL YOURSELF DAMN!!!!

Aftermath
an: not a fic, but an assignment I did during the semester. Had to adapt or extend a scene from one of Shirley Jackson’s writing and I chose The Lottery. So now that I think about this, it actually is technically fanfiction lmaooo. But I just wanted to post something outside of the norm since I haven’t been horribly active lately.
Summary: The day after the town’s tradition, a widow is forced to wake up to an empty bed and cold sheets.
Word count: 709
Warnings: vague description of violence and bodies.
~~~~~~
    He forgets when he wakes up. Comforter too soft and sleep too deep for him to remember right away, just groggy and content as the sun peeks through the curtains. He stretches, body curling and straightening like a feline before he speaks with a smile and closed eyes.
    “Good morning.”     He opens his eyes to meet an empty bed and remembers.
    The crowd remarking on the weather as they gathered rocks, his wife’s tense smile as she made pleasantries with the neighbor as they headed to the town square.
    The look on her face when she saw the paper in her hand.
    He remembers now.
    The neighbors greet him as he gets the mail. Smiles far too wide to be genuine and their eyes darting around as if looking for an escape in case he snaps. In case he blames them.
    But he can’t blame them. Not really. They all took part in it.
    The tradition. The massacre.
    The murder of his dear Adalaide.
    He never condemned the lottery, not like the others. He would nod his head politely at the insistence of upholding tradition and the “culture” of their town by the older generations. The ones who had been through more lotteries than the years he had been on earth. Afterwards he would poke fun with his wife who, even in her sweet nature, couldn't help but laugh at his cartoonish impressions of the disgruntled elders.
    They would lay together in bed, laughter fading away from her sweet voice and replaced with a furrow of her brows.
    “Have you ever thought about it?” She would ask.
    “About?”
    Adalaide would pause for a moment, as if scared somebody would hear.
    “A life without it.”
    “No.”
    Which was true. He never thought about it before. He didn’t have to. The closest family members of his that had been picked were old. Distant cousins-of-cousins and withering great-grandparents that he would have to pick his brain to remember the name of. A dear friend of the playground, once. When he was eight years old, Cassandra. A sweet little girl who would only laugh when he tugged at her pigtails and chased her with frogs.
    Try as he might, he couldn’t remember the day she was picked. He couldn’t remark on the feeling of the rock leaving his hand, or her mother’s wailing or even her own shrieks of pain as it happened. All he could remember was that her pigtails had been tied off with a satin pink ribbon that glinted in the sunlight.
    He thinks of the weight of his wife’s head on his chest, long lashes kissing the freckles on her cheeks as she stared off with a frown. “It would be nice though, wouldn't it?”
    He thinks of her fingers lacing with his and running his thumb over the small scar on her ring finger.
    He thinks of her smile. Her kiss.
    Yes.
    The shaking but reassuring smile she gave him before the first rock sailed through the air and cracked against her jaw.
    It would have been nice.
    He spends his day in a daze, flashing between reality and past with limbs moving like he were underwater. He thinks he hears the door knocking, but doesn’t move. He simply sits and thinks of what could have happened.
    If he had gone to the council meetings, voiced his opposition to the lottery. If he had grabbed his slip earlier,if he had refused and stood in front of her like a vigilante protector, if he had taken her hand in his and ran. Ran until the town was nothing but a glint in the distance and a fleeting thought in his mind.
    He blinks.
    Hours have passed. It's late now. He should sleep.
    He drags himself to bed, limbs like lead and eyes already closing before his head hits the pillow.
    Adalaide smiles in his dreams and kisses him sweetly. She isn’t a mangled body, screaming out in agony. She’s loving and soft under his hands just as he knew her to be. She tells him its all going to be okay.
    When he wakes up in the morning, he stretches and smiles before saying “G’morning” with sleep still heavy on his tongue and-
    He opens his eyes to meet an empty bed and remembers.
Can I ask something from Code Geass? What do you think are Lelouch and Suzaku’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic? Sorry if you've answered these questions before.....
i haven't actually! thank you so much for sending this. thoughts in the read more below!
the thing abt suzaku and lelouch that really called to me was that they are two sides of the same coin. theyre both altruistic to a fault (different but the same), they love far too deeply (not talking abt this in a ship way either. both lelouch and suzaku do things out of love for others that is...questionable at best), they don't really understand the situation as a whole, and they don't really face major consequences to the end. lelouch is cruel, selfish, manipulative. suzaku is uncritical, righteously full of self loathing, half-hearted. theyre both major fucking hypocrites. they hate each other for the same reason they work so well together. (they love each other for those same reasons, too.) they're kind and optimistic to a fault. they're children playing war.
easily my favorite scene in all of code geass is one of the final scenes during the damocles battle, when the core argument between what lelouch stood for and what suzaku stood for is contended between the entire cast of characters, jumping from statement to statement, viewpoint from viewpoint. not only do suzaku and lelouch have their own quips but the other characters are what really make it for me because those are all people who are just as alive and have just as many feelings as they do--but at the end of the day none of that matters to them, such symbolized by the finale and zero requiem. their world was always so small, suzaku, lelouch, and nunnally. the final punishment was to destroy that in such a way that it could never be restored, that nothing could ever be the same. it's a much crueler punishment for suzaku, but i think lelouch knows suzaku well enough to know that suzaku would not be able to truly live (if you can even call it that, haha) without being molded into being something he is not (he was regarded as a knight and hero when all he saw himself as was a murdered.) but in the same breath, lelouch knowing that, accepting that part of suzaku, it being his final parting gift, his form of an eternity together... its powerful!
its kind of funny because code geass has its moments where the writing is so very much Not Good but then it also has these amazingly complex interwoven moments sprinkled in. personally, i actually grew up always asking myself whether its better to change the system without any casualty whatsoever vs dismantling it no matter the price, so i see myself in the both of them, though i agree with lelouch far more. truthfully, i didnt even like suzaku until after he detonates the fleija in r2 and he tells schneizel that as long as he makes him knight of one, he will slay the emperor. it took him a while, but he finally showed his own truth, understanding his fate as a weapon above all else.
its an anime with characters that are more complex than they look, parallels that run deeper than i believe many give credit for (dont get me started on shirley), and the truth of war, though maybe a bit sanitized. that being said, code geass would be Nothing without suzaku and lelouch at its helm, the true driving forces of the narrative and even the world of code geass itself.
those two are truly one of a kind.
reading suzaku and lelouch’s dynamic as romantic from the getgo is really funny because of suzaku wingmaning shirley. because now you have to read that as either part of his his obsessive need to be a doormat or, the funnier but less in-character option, he knows shes going to be rejected and hes rooting for it
Troy and Abed watch Bluey every day. It's part of their rutine. Troy cries on most episodes. Abed is emotionally affected by it too. Troy's favorite character is Bandit. Abed's is Bluey herself.
Also, one time Annie passed by and was like "you guys are seriously watching a kids show?" But then joined them and ended up sobbing uncontrollably. From then on she joined them in their ritual. Her favorite character is Chili
Shirley found them once watching it in the study room and was like "oooh, I put my children that show all the time, is good to see you, um, reconnecting with your childhood" but after no one responded she tried to strat a conversation so she asked them who they like, she said the little dog boy bluey and they proceded to scream at her (well, Annie and Troy, Abed just kept repiting not cool very loudly) and made her leave.
Also, Jeff saw it once with them and he played it off as if he didnt care and thought it was stupid but he strated wiping as soon as no one saw him and ended up watching the show by himself in secret (but Abed knows). He starts crying everytime Bandit interacts with his children. His favorite character is Bingo.
Pierce doesnt have any fucking idea what is going on in any of the episodes.
Britta doenst careand like shirley still thinks that Bluey is a boy. She has a favorite character though and that's Muffin.
Oh, and Chang is absolutely OBSSESED. To the point of committing violent crimes from his love for the show. He also enjoys Muffin the most.
spill the tea on hasbin ☕
okay.
The characters themselves
angel - ill be honest hes one of the best in the cast For Me Personally hes very fun. butthe scene where he talkd abt why he gets drunk to escape his issues is just so ... it didnt Feel good. like its leaving jothing up to yhe audience to figure out Humm Why Does He Do This? also the song right after where its all about how hes a loser for it(????) was a bit shit concept wise. how is he a loser. unless if the menaing of thr song is Literal like hes Lost a Lot then i will stand corrected. but the song still kind of pisses me off sjfjsjndd
nifty - pisses me off. shes irritating. naught more but comic relief
husk - I like his voice but the way he reads everyones issues out loud Also leaving nothing up to the aufience to figure out is so boring. Gee thanks bro(DONT LET ME FORGET TO BE MAD ABT THE USAGE OF "DADDY ISSUES)
charlie - pisses me off. shes irritating. I look like a misogynist but the way shes written pisses me off. shes so Infuriatingly merciful even as angels are reigning down on the hotel actively endangering Her People Which She Cares About Soo Much. (DONT LET ME FORGET TO BE MAD ABT THE FIGHT SCENE)
vaggie - shouldve named her maggie. way too easy to say faggie. She doesnt really piss me off shes the most tolerable really aside frm angel and someone else ill get to. I wish she was more emotional about GETTING HER WINGS BACK. like THATS A PRETTY BIG THING DUDE. viv sacrifices super important things like this for either comedic relief or to make things Cool. also she has the most unfitting singing voice ive ever fucking heard. oh my god please get someone else to sing for her PLEASE we dont need mirabel de encanto to sing for VAGGIE. also airs out her issues levaing no abiguity.
charlie- Oh my god. She pisseI WAS ABOUT TO WRITE ANOTHER CHARLIE SECTION BC I COMPLETELY FORGOT I ALREADY DID. She makes me so mad i was abt to write two parts.
pentious - hes cute. most consistent out of everyone. Comedic relief. Hate how his death was handled that pissed me off.
Who else... idk ill get to the writing and pacing
alasto4r- He pisses me off. i hate his deisgn i hate how red he is i hate how hes supposed to be black but hes the whitest son of a bitch ive ever seen. hes inconsistent hes out of xharacter (that little feud with lucifer, he wouldnt say Fuck You he'd top it off with a quirky quip so that he IN HIS OWN WORDS "ALWAYS IN CONTROL") he PISSES ME OFF
emily- shes cute. because shes just charlie.shes literally just charlie with her colors inverted.
sera- very original namecertaintly not derived from Seraphim. shes fine.wish she had locs instead of shirley temple curls
fat nuggets- i cheer in joy at hlthe very sight of him.
the fight against the angels was so anticlimactic. it was so boring. sr pentious being killed sucked yes but did the characters rly have to cease all operation in a VERY HIGH INTENSITY ENVIRONMENT to mourn? they all should have been killed then and there for their inattention. rookie mistake. i wish charlie did way more than just shoot fucking fireworks.
The pacing is ALL OVER THE PLACE. the way the show depicts the passage of time is incredibly unclear.
