It's like I've chained myself to an anvil
to keep my stride above the waves
and kept denying the tide was rising
but now it's time to break my chains
I've put up with far too much
This is not working anymore
I will not drown myself again
I will break them like before

Just watched The Marvels. Would you be willing to write Carol x Reader? After the line “death follows you everywhere” and Monica’s disappearance, Carol flees to Reader bc they are the only one who can lift the burdens Carol Carrie’s. Laughter and fluff when they reunite.
carol comes back to your shared home unannounced. she had the chance to see you candidly cleaning with the vacuum, singing on top of your lungs over the songs that carol once mentioned and she clearly can recall how you have called her cheesy for her choice of songs. yet, here you are.
the sight alone moves her heart.
"carol? oh my god!" you're put into a mild hysterics, jumping onto her figure in disbelief to see her safe and sound.
and carol couldn't be any more happier to be surrounded by your warmth again. the contrast between her home in space cannot come any closer to the actual home she has on earth. carol's home was there to remind her of the trinkets of life she has built after the brainwash in kree, each of your touch and voice is lilted with nothing but comfort, a loving one.
the new life she has grown better into. you are carol's source of sunshine – reminding her that she wasn't a bad omen.
"this is what i come back home to? i knew it was good of me to come by bearing fruits." carol pointedly looks at the chips by the table. "and i definitely know that you liked my songs!"
you gave her a sheepish smile. "yeah, yeah. the junk foods are kept on a minimal don't you worry. and don't get your pretty head get all big now, i may have grown fond of them."
"mhmm. i don't think i'll let go of it now."
carol chuckled at your silly choice of words. you were definitely in denial of loving them, which put her mouth in a smirk. you kept rambling how it was you getting sick of your repeated playlist, so you had to listen to a new genre – carol's genre – all while having your arms wrapped around her neck and her own arms are tight around your waist.
the least carol wanted was to forget. but with your presence to remind her of the better parts of her, one that you have built together – all are something that she never knew she'll get again – only reminded the superhero that things will get better, eventually.
it's only a matter of time to grow around it and heal.

I liked seeing the realism of the awkwardness between Carol and Monica and just how generally awkward Carol would be after years alone in space but I miss the cocky know-it-all version of Captain Marvel we got in the first movie. She was just so competent and cool and this movie felt a little tepid in that regard. Also wanted much more in terms of a conversation between Monica and her especially considering the ending. There should’ve been some kind of deep emotional exchange and we just didn’t get that. What do you think?
Hmm. Honestly, my first thought is that it sounds like maybe you wanted a different movie, but let me take a crack at this.
I'll address the version of Captain Marvel part first.
In CM, Carol was cocky because she was a young soldier as part of an elite team that only cared about the Kree. She had cool powers and never saw her actions as having any consequences because she was told the Kree were always in the right and she was a hero. She also had no memories or real emotional attachments to anyone, so there was no one depending on her or waiting on her back home. She could be as brash and know-it-all as she liked.
In The Marvels, she's almost 70. She has some of her memories back. She has people she cares about and who care about her - and who have expectations of her. She's lost one of the most important people in her life. She has thousands of planets of people who look to her to help them. And she has seen firsthand that being cocky and a know-it-all can have catastrophic consequences that spiral out of your control.
It wouldn't make a lick of sense for her to have the same attitude in The Marvels as she did in CM unless the plot and trajectory of her character was completely different. CM was about owning her power and reclaiming herself, which leans itself towards showcasing the cocky side of her. The Marvels is about family, reconnection, and atonement - which does not really call for that cocky aspect of her personality to be at the forefront. She still had moments of being cocky and certainly competent (like while fighting), but it was tempered by experience, as it should be. So while it may not be as exciting, I think it was better for her as a character because we actually got to see more sides of Carol and not just Captain Marvel. And personally, I find that a lot more interesting than the cocky, know-it-all schtick. We've seen that with countless characters in the MCU - I'm kind of over it. It's lazy IMO.
Now as far as the stuff with Monica, I stand by my statement that their deeper conversation would naturally have come after they finished the mission with Dar-Benn. They had to reach a point with each other where they're willing to have that conversation first, and that wasn't earned until the end. It's just unfortunate that Monica got trapped on the other side, so we can't see that full talk yet.
But you bring up an interesting point, and I really want to know, what exactly did you want or expect to happen? And I'm asking to take into account the actual situation they were in and what makes sense for the characters, not the fanfiction of what we're all guilty of imagining playing out. Because, for example, I've seen people say Monica should've fought Carol or screamed at her, and that makes zero sense because that's not in Monica's character. I also don't know what Monica would yell at her about after being told point blank, "I wanted to come home, but I inadvertently doomed a whole planet of people to die, and didn't feel like I deserved to be with family until I fixed it." Like what is Monica supposed to say to that? "I don't care - you still should've visited." That's silly.
So genuinely - and this is open to anyone - what would you have preferred to happen that still makes sense within the context of the movie and with the characters?

Okay my review of The Marvels ( spoiler warnings ahead!! )
. THE MOVIE IS SO AWESOME I SCREAMED I SCRUMPT IT ALSO RADIATES FEMININE POWER MESSAGES AAAAAAAAAHHH
. Kamala finally getting to fight alongside Carol. Bless
. YESSSSS MONICA CAROL AND KAMALA TRIPLE FIGHT!!!!
. Dar Benn IS......unhinged. Yeesh. She kinda reminds me of Maleficent and Queen Grimmhilde in some ways
. So Dar Benn just foes around annihilating people AND resources across the galaxy all for Hala?!?!? Like, I get your devotion to your home planet, lady, but PLS
. Okay turns out Ael Dann ( Dar Benn's older twin brother and son of Ronan and Una Rogg ) died in the Kree Civil War ( which is basically a bloody toss up between the extended Kree Imperial Household and their factions over who gets to be Supreme Ruler of the Kree after Ronan died. Talk about Gamr of Thrones like situation here.
. Prince Yan slaying and being handsome and fly as always ~ 🤩🤩🤩🤩🥺🥺
. AAAAAAAHHH MONICA WAKES UP IN AN X MEN TIMELINE?!?!?! AAAAAAHHH
. Let's just say Dar Benn's outcome is literally a result of her being overcome with vengeance and greed
. Ofc the Skrulls won't trust the Kree especially with the Kree Skrull War going on for DECADES
. Well at least now the planets affected by the Kree are recovering and rebuilding right now
. Srsly Aladna is basically like when Oz, Wonderland and Disney's Aladdin verse somehow mash it up together and produce that
. The Aladanaans do have sick sirenic voices and musical related powers tho
. The Aladnaan fashion has some nods to the fashions in Silly Symphonies, Jupiter Ascending and Dune
. The Multiverses are being mentioned
. FLERKEN ARMY TO THE RESCUE!!! ( with Memory from Cats played in the background )
. Kamala's family moments are just - bless 🤩🤩🤩🥺🥺🥺🥺
. So the bangles ARE indeed from the Hindu Myth Planes. OH BOY I BET the Hindu Myth Planes be having had beef with the Kree over misuse of the bangles, really
. ALL IN ALL ITS SUCH AN AWESOME MOVIE!!!
🤩🤩🤩🤩

Okay, just got back from The Marvels. Super spoilery review under the cut. Just one mid-credit scene, no post-credits.
First of all........... VALKYRIE!!!!!!!!! Oh my god, I had no idea she was going to show up so to say that I was shocked is the understatement of the year. I love her and they're friends and I'm the happiest girl alive (I'm like Kamala but for Val. Well, what the hell... I'm like Kamala for Carol too). So the Skrulls go back to Earth? So... screw Secret Invasion then?
So... the best way I can sum this up is: sigh. So many lost opportunities. So many character beats are okay but nothing is done with them. They're just mentioned, we have at most 2 or 3 lines of the characters saying them but the movie moves along immediately after.
If the three are entangled, Carol could have relied on her wits to fight instead of her powers. Show that she's a hero not because of her powers, but because of who she is, of her core, she's a good woman. We have lots of scenes with Steve that are focused on that, so why not do the same with Carol?
She got her revenge by destroying the Supreme Intelligence but she destined Hala to be completely ruined. It backfired on her. That's a GREAT story! Why not focus on that? On her guilt, her need for revenge, her solitude, the fact that the Kree took her bodily autonomy... Her revelation is merely two or three lines that are followed by Monica "Oh, we're family, it doesn't matter". Uh... no! Don't do that! Dig into that guilt, make us get to know Carol better!
This is not a Captain Marvel sequel at all, this movie is not about Carol. Don't get me wrong, her chemistry with Monica and Kamala is wonderful and their interactions are the best thing in the movie but she's not the title character. And it pisses me off. Her first movie earned $1b, Carol DESERVED a sequel.
I liked the villain (forgot her name already), her motivation was interesting but once again... she was not fleshed out. She could have been a sympathetic one with terrible methods but she comes out as very basic. Which sucks! Carol got her revenge and it backfired on her, this villain was happy to destroy everything to save Hala... are these writers and Feige seriously telling me they couldn't have made them meet in the middle? Still hero and villain but somewhat close in certain things... that's an interesting story!
But mostly, one of the biggest problems I have with this movie is the way they treat the Kree. Of course, I'm not saying Hala deserved to be destroyed, they needed to be saved, that's cool. But the Kree were an empire, far worse than anything Asgard ever did (which is saying a lot) but they're mostly presented here as not that bad? I got the feeling that they were saying those on top were bad guys but in the first movie we hear what the Kree have been doing for eons and dunno... it bothers me.
And the biggest issue with this movie is a problem I've had with Marvel for years, but especially in the new phases. They want to put the heroes to the test, their actions are questioned and we're shown they make mistakes sometimes. That's good, I like it. BUT in order to make that work you have to REALLY dive into their actions, otherwise it feels like you just want to blame them.
Not to forget that if you do that with only some heroes (not all of them) and some characters are perpetually protected by the narrative, that disconnect makes these movies really hard to watch.
Oh, and this is a silly nitpick but that summary of the first movie at the beginning? It bothered me a little. As if we need a summary. That movie earned one billion, Feige, we've seen it.
Another big issue. That singing planet. What...the...fuck...was...that? Am I the only one who thought they were trying waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hard to imitate the GoTG movies? (And failing miserably)
Wow, this is getting long. Okay, positive things. The trio are wonderful. The flerkens eating the crew was pretty funny. The scene where all three are learning how to switch is super fun. Monica trying to reach out to the villain reminded me of WandaVision, my girl is kind and she's just so good, I really like Monica.
Just two more things. One problematic and the other that I LOVED.
The first is the powers range is all over the place and I find it to be slightly confusing. Carol can fix suns now? And she just fixes Hala that way and she goes back to Earth, nothing more? And Monica... she knows the villain opened a tear in time-space continuum just by looking at it? What do we need Stephen for anymore, eh? Not a fan. I like characters with powers but if they're not limited and kept small despite how great they might be, they just feel hollow.
The second is that scene of Carol in Tarnax when they're on the ship and Kamala wants to stay in order to save everybody but Carol yells at her "We save as many as we can!" to convince her that they have to leave. I loved that as it reminded me of Steve's chat with Wanda in CW when he tells her "We try to save as many people as we can, sometimes that doesn't mean everybody". I really liked that Carol said that but they never talked about it and it's truly a shame, I would have loved to hear it from her, it would have shown how mature and what a great leader and Captain she is.
Overall, I did enjoy watching the movie but it's not a good one. It's way too superficial, the story is too basic and, most importantly, Carol DESERVED a sequel. One focused on her and her only. I'm gonna give it a 5/10 and only because Carol, Monica and Kamala are lovely together.

For the ask meme: G (Straight Until Boiled)
G: If you wrote a sequel to Straight Until Boiled: or, How Yondu Udonta Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Dick what would it be about?
hgkkghkghkgkhjggk
Thinking about that fic is a blast from the past! I love that silly story. It's honestly my peak How They Got Together Kragdu Fic, complete with Kraglin assuming (like everyone else on the crew) that they're practically dating anyway, even if it's unspoken, because Yondu treats him like he's his BBFF, bestie-boyfriend-forever. Meanwhile, Yondu is like. Wait. I'm dating my XO????!?!?! And his panic at the mere thought of caring about someone other than himself accounts for 90% of the plot. He's so stupid (affectionate)
I think a sequel would have our boys settling into the rocks of their relationship, and Yondu realising that nothing has fundamentally changed. Literally the only difference is that they make out and fuck as well as spending every hour of every day together, bouncing ideas off each other, and making up stupid little injokes to torment (lovingly) a teenage Peter with.
The main plot of the sequel would probably revolve around a mutiny, because Vaas and Taserface are still very much there and very much nefarious. I want all the drama of the crew accusing Yondu of favouring Kraglin and Peter, and the fallout thereof!
During the mutiny, the Eclector crashes. The whole crew get marooned on a proverbial desert island planet, with LOTS of very dangerous hungry wildlife, and they all have to work together to survive...
I'd also love to bring the OG guardians back into it, because I need more Stakar and Aleta and Charlie and Martinex and co. in my life. So, there's a mutiny, shit hits the fan, the 99th faction crash-land on an uninhabited planet with no way back into space and everything devolves into infighting while desperately trying to stay alive... and then Stakar, who is keeping tabs and doesn't actually want his idiot blue child/ex dead, pretends to need to mine some precious ore from the planet's crust or whatever, so he has an excuse to check in.
Obviously, this turns into a heist plot where Yondu and the others try to steal his ship and maroon him instead.
I just think Stakar 'you broke all our hearts <3' Ogord and Kree Guy should be central characters too, to make Kraglin extra jealous. He's such a soft but prickly little dude, I love him!

more ocs part 2!!! this is Kreetchyr, my persona! Or ventsona, or something. I’m not totally sure what Kree is, but I made him back in high school, and he stuck around :) I draw him a lot in autumn specifically, he’s got a very autumnal vibe i think. He represents the sensation of feeling out of place, which can manifest as my dysphoria, PTSD, or neurodivergence. he’s also a silly little guy <3

Self-awareness isn't a helpful skill on its own. I am fully aware that I am eating my feelings, but that doesn't stop me because if I stop to feel these feelings I'm gonna be engaging in even more harmful behaviors to cope with them. So where do I go from here?

NEAL ADAMS R.I.P.
Tumblr media
I was shocked and saddened to learn today that legendary comic book artist Neal Adams had passed away at the age of 80.
Tumblr media
Adams had been working in the comic book industry since the 1960s.  His realistic, commercial art-style of drawing was a breathe of fresh air, and his work was immediately identifiable.  As someone described it so well, Adams could make the fantastic look real.
Tumblr media
During the 1960s he worked for both DC and Marvel, drawing a multitude of characters.  But seemed to me that the bulk of his work during this time was at DC.
Tumblr media
A lot of his work at DC was on covers, which was a great marketing idea because his art just grabbed you.  I can’t tell you how many times I bought a comic because it had a Neal Adams cover, only to be disappointed that someone else did the interior art.  (Most places back in those day did not allow you to browse the comics at the stands.  “Hey, kid!  This ain’t no library!”)
Tumblr media
That isn’t to say Adams wasn’t given interior art assignments.  At Marvel he worked for a short stint on X-Men before it was cancelled; drew the bulk of the Kree-Skull War story in Avengers.
Tumblr media
At DC he took over the Deadman strip and made it his own, and drew several issues of World’s Finest and The Brave and the Bold (these are just off the top of my head; I’m sure he did more).  It was in one of those B & B issues that Adfams redesigned Green Arrow’s costume and gave him the mustache and goatee.
Tumblr media
But it wasn’t until the late 1960s/early 1970s when he teamed up with writer Denny O’Neil that Adams really hit his stride.  The two of them took over Green Lantern, added Green Arrow (and Black Canary most of the time, although she never got cover credit) and produced classic stories that were more relevant, dealing with real world issues such as racism, drug abuse, and pollution.
Tumblr media
As if that weren’t enough, the duo then turned their attention to Batman.  The character was in dire straits at that time, the victim of the campiness of the Batman television show.  In short, he had become a joke, but no one was laughing anymore.
Tumblr media
O’Neill and Adams saved the character by stripping away all the silliness of the Silver Age and bringing him back to his roots.  He was the dark knight detective again.  He was THE Batman.
Tumblr media
That move saved the character and reinvigorated the franchise.  If it hadn’t been for O’Neill and Adams, Batman would not be the flagship character he is today.
Tumblr media
Adams was also one of the first, and most vocal, proponents of creator rights.  When Superman the Movie was about the be released he brought to the public’s attention that Superman’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were essentially destitute and abandoned by DC.
Tumblr media
It was because of the efforts of Neal Adams and others that Siegel and Shuster got a “created by” credit in the film, why that same credit began appearing in every issue of Superman and Action Comics, and why DC started paying Siegel and Shuster an annual stipend.
Tumblr media
Adams work wasn’t limited to DC and Marvel.  When Ballantine Books released new paperback editions of the Tarzan novels they were adorned with Neal Adams covers.
Tumblr media
He also established his own company, Continuity Associates, and began producing comics for new, independent published like Pacific Comics, before dipping his toes into the self publishing world for awhile, with characters like Toyboy, Samuree, and Megalith.
Tumblr media
In the past few years he has done projects for both DC and Marvel, as well as provided numerous covers, which were usually bonus alternates.
Tumblr media
The last project Adams did at the Big Two that I’m aware of was the Fantastic Four: Antithesis mini-series with writer Mark Waid.
Tumblr media
Quite frankly, I do not have enough time or space here to do justice to Neal Adams’ incredible body of work, and the contributions he made to comic books.
Tumblr media
Neal Adams. rest in peace, sir.  You will be sorely missed.

Blueberry picking was a family tradition growing up. I haven't been in over 12 years, so this weekend my cousins took me to a good patch near White River. There was a spot where full bushes lined a fallen log, so I got to sit and rest while bending twigs into my bucket to release bunches of berries without losing them.
The hornets are bad in the daytime, so we went in the evening which is prime mosquito time. I've always liked dragonflies, but I'd never been so grateful to have one fly by my head. I applied a citrus-mint balm to my chest, wrists, and ankles at home so those were left alone. Next time I'd better put some bug repellant on my face and booty, too!

ROUND 1D, MATCH 6 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Causes of Death & Propaganda Under the Cut:
Karen Page
Cause of Death: Murdered by the main villain
Propaganda:
She has a lot of potential that had been just thrown away. Honestly most DD love interests have been done dirty, which sucks since it's my favourite comic. At least the show didn't kill her
Holly Granger / Hawk
Cause of Death: Murdered by the zombie of her predecessor
Propaganda:
Her existence is a retcon, her powers are a retcon- the comics can't even agree if she's the older or younger Granger sister. She largely existed to hit on muscley comic men and take sexy shower scenes. Her death is even implied to be given the cosmic "Okay!" as her attempt to rise from the dead (for real this time) is thwarted by an angelic manifestation of another character laying her back to rest. All of this to say that she's a fantastic idea that was mishandled over and over again until they decided to fridge her in favor of just bringing the first Hawk back, but they still want all of the drama and sadness of killing her off in the end.
Antalya / Mary-Jo Altman
Cause of Death: Burned to death in front of her son
Propaganda:
Mary-Jo Altman didn't initially have a name. She was just Mrs Altman, the mom of Young Avenger Hulkling (human name: Theodore "Teddy" Altman. Given name: Prince Dorrek). In the original comic run she dies without a name, within the same issue she's introduced, after something like nine speaking lines (one time I counted). She's barely mourned: Teddy cries at the end of the initial Young Avengers run, but that lasts about a page before our heroes run off to pursue further adventures. In further comics, such as Young Avengers Presents, Teddy's focus is on his biological father he never knew (the Kree Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel). Mrs Altman didn't get a name until 2020, a decade and a half after her first appearance.
But without her, Teddy Altman wouldn't be the character he is. Teddy Altman is kind, and gentle, and compassionate, and while he's willing to resort to violence (he is a superhero) he does try diplomacy first. The Kree and the Skrull are two alien races known in Marvel canon as being predisposed to war, and it would have been very easy to make Teddy, who is both, personify that - but he's doesn't. He loves. He loves his husband. He loves his friends. He loves Earth. And he wouldn't be this way without Mary-Jo Altman, who also chose love. Writer Anthony Oliveira spotlighted her character repeatedly in his work for Marvel and under his pen she is exactly the kind of person who would raise someone as remarkable as Teddy. Antalya was an elite Skrull warrior tasked with guarding a secret royal Skrull baby that was never meant to be, and she loved him. She loved Earth. She chose to become a real estate agent. She adored all the silly little mundanities of Earth - and she taught that love to her son. "Be brave enough to be kind," she told him. And he is.
Mary-Jo Altman deserved better. I'm glad later writers made sure she got it.
