hey uhm. No upside down AU, with a side of school reunion single parent Steve Harrington attending with his daughter cause he couldn't find a sitter at such short notice and in comes Eddie Munson, the once upon a time local drug dealer now 5* local mechanic and part time dive bar rockstar who's great with kids hanging out in the corner playing some dumb game with all the kids whos parents also couldn't get sitters, and clearly that corner is the most EXCITING corner in the whole place cause Eddie's there having a blast with a bunch of kids rather than interacting with people who never understood or interacted with him back in highschool.
and despite having so many people vying to say hello to him, so many people wanting to catch up with the king, Steve just finds himself drawn in to his daughters shenanigans with the ridiculously pretty guy he once dubbed a freak cause said Freak lights up like christmas when he sees him, all teeth and dimples and a far too charming
"Steeeeeve Harrington! His royal highness graces us lowly peasants with his presence!! Come my little adventurers, bow before your king."
even his daughter mocks a little bow, and it's the cutest fucking thing Steve has ever seen in his LIFE.

While I love Steve having a kid that's a nerd, my favorite is if his kid is just like him. He's popular even at 7, he's extroverted, funny, and charming albeit a little strange. He loves sports and struggles in math and doesn't really get english and gets scolded when he laughs in history—sue him he thought it was funny—and has a tendency to get detention but also is somehow a teachers pet all at once.
He has a tendency for feminine things, makes it his own with earrings and the occasional pink flower print shirt.
He begs steve to not work on the car until he gets home from school, cause even at 5, he would rather climb over the fence and run home by himself then learn his dad worked on the cool car without him.
He loves driving and cooking and dancing and loves swimming—aunt Robbie calls him a variety of aquatic animals instead of his name; minnow, fish, stingray, tigershark. Anything went.
They look alike and act alike to the point robin laughs and claims Steve just cloned himself, Eddie says that the kid is actually just Steve brought to the future through time travel. Steve laughs, he loves it ofc but he's never pushed or forced it, it just happened that way.
But there's also times, where Steve sees his son, so like him with big tears in his eyes trying to be tough. Or when all he wants is to sleep in the bed with Steve when he has a nightmare, wants his dad to kiss everything better, when he so easily seeks affection or struggles with school to the point he's getting stress migraines at 9, sees him try so hard to do his best and do what he does well. Sees him fail.
And when Steve sees this, he wonders if maybe he wasn't a bad kid. Didn't need to be tougher, manlier, smarter—better—to deserve love.
Just. Like. Steve seeing that he didn't need to be anything other than what he was. That he has no idea how his parents didn't love him bc how could he ever not love his kid? Just like its okay for him to be how he is and have a kid that a like him as well bc he's pretty great
And like. Its just that idea that Steve could only “heal his inner child” with a kid that's different then him or a girl is kind of sad that it's only that what if him and his son go to every game and constantly have grease on them what then.
#stranger things#steve harrington#robin buckley#dad steve harrington#i just think it would be so nice#I am going to draw this kid I hope y'all know#his name is going to be Jimeno#bc Steves Cuban and wants to give his son a Cuban name too#his nickname will be meno and that's why robin thought calling him minnow was hilarious#he is now part of my st universe#I have three main ones#the steddie one the stali one and now this one#single dad Steve#I also have a very set past stancy universe that I don't delve into where they're divorced and have a kid and Nancys with robin#that one is fun and I will draw it someday#but anyway#let Steve have a kid that's like him bc why tf can he only have a kid that's different#like what's so wrong about Steve#why can't his kid like all the typical jock stuff#and be sensitive and shit#and Steves like oh my god I wasn't a horrible kid who could never do anything right my parents were assholrs#and Steves like I will give my kid ANYTHING he desires and what are YOU gonna do about it#him and robin living together practically coparenting#jimeno starts calling robin roberto bc Steve does#and imagine robin HAS to learn Spanish fluently bc Steve only speaks Spanish in the house#jimenos first language will be spanish if Steve has anything to say about it#robin learns so fast#but imagine Nancy having a hard time learning it and like every ones so co fused bc Steve and jimeno will talk to her in Spanish and she'll#talk back in English and every ones confused but they understand each other so it's fine

Single teen dad steve who’s kid comes out as trans kinda young and fuck it’s the late 80’s early 90’s - post upside down - and he’s freaking out because he just wants the best for his little kid. She- he has always been Steve’s biggest priority and he loves his kid no matter what and he’s gonna embrace the hell out of it, but he has worries about it all because he’s in small town Hawkins and people here get beat up for being rumoured to be gay, what the hell is gonna happen to his kid??
But mainly, he has no idea how to help. He doesn’t know anything about it. Robin assists where she can but she’s just as in the dark about it as Steve.
Then comes one night, Axl (they’re trying out new names each month and this month Axl is obsessed with Gunners so it’s only appropriate) is having a panic attack over his dysphoria and Steve is trying his best to help. He can’t bind, doesn’t know how to do it on his own without it hurting really bad, and Steve is trying to help but Axl won’t let anyone see any part of him without a shirt and so it’s hard. They tried to figure out how to do it on Steve’s bare chest but it’s not really the same. Eventually Axl cries himself to sleep about it with Steve sitting on the end of his bed because Axl didn’t want to even be touched after a while.
And Steve doesn’t sleep that night, he stays up half the night trying to bind his own chest correctly, then he tapes balloons and stuffed toys to the front of this big bear they have and tries to bind on that. But nothings working, and he can’t help but feel like he’s failed his kid. He debated calling Robin up to see if she’d come over and he could try binding her chest to figure it out, he knows she’ll say yes because she cares about Axl so much and also won’t care if Steve sees her bare chest as he has before, but she’s out of state for work for a whole other week. He just cries until it’s time to get up for work and school.
Axl is wearing a baggy shirt under an even baggier hoodie, even though it’s the middle of summer. Steve wants to tell him to take it off, to make sure he doesn’t faint today, but he knows that’s only gonna make things worse - everyone at school still thinks he’s a girl. He makes sure to pack ice packs in Axl’s lunch bag and extra ice in his water bottle.
He goes to work and thinks about it all day, then he gets home to find a note on the counter from Axl, saying he’s popped across the street to study with Melody for a while. They’ve been friends since they were little, and she’s the only one from school who knows so far. Steve’s glad Axl’s doing something to distract himself rather than rotting away in bed and making himself feel more sick about it.
Halfway through cooking himself dinner (and by cooking he means microwaving whatever the fuck he can find in the fridge) he gets a knock on the door. It’s Eddie. Of course it’s Eddie. They had plans to catch up for a beer down the pub tonight, since they hadn’t seen eachother in a while now. Steve had been so distracted today he completely forgot.
Steve apologises to Eddie and tells him he’s just been so stressed today and he couldn’t talk to Robin about it and everything is just so complicated, he just breaks down and cries right then and there in his doorway.
And Eddie, being the kind soul that he always has been, pulls Steve into a hug and lets him cry about it.
They sit down at the table together and crack open a couple of beers and eat the microwaved leftovers. And they chat and Steve forgets about everything for a little while. Eddie does that to him; makes Steve forget everything else in the world doesn’t exist besides Eddie.
He’s tried to snuff his stupid feelings for Eddie out for years, since 1986. It hasn’t worked. But Eddie’s been between relationships, and Steve’s had Axl to worry about so trying to have anything serious has been so hard and pointless. No one wants an instant pre-teen, and especially not Eddie who has expressed he doesn’t want kids several times. It’s pointless.
So very pointless.
But Steve wants him anyway.
Eddie asks about Axl, as he always does. He cares about Steve’s kid the way he cares about Dustin, sort of. They get along, but Eddie kinda gets awkward around him for some reason and Axl gets very flustered around Eddie. Steve found it adorable when he was little, Eddie with his long hair and tattoos, he always through it was cool. And as Axl got older, the more he’d avoid Eddie in hopes of not fanboying over Eddie’s band, or tattoos, or his guitar.
But they don’t really see eachother much these days, so now that Axl’s fourteen and too cool to ask questions when Steve brings Eddie up, who knows what they’d be like around eachother?
Eddie’s asking questions, completely oblivious as he asks how “she’s going” and if “she’s surviving her first year of highschool” and blah blah blah, and Steve knows it’s because he doesn’t know. But it messes with his head anyway, because that’s his boy their talking about, not his girl, and it’s been bothering him all day and Steve just-
He crumbles. He opens up to Eddie and tells him everything on his mind right now. How Axl is really a boy, and how they’re trying out new names, and how Steve feels like he’s failing his kid because he doesn’t know how to help him bind, or feel safe, or come out at school, or what to do to get him on testosterone or if that’s even an option and-
Eddie places his hand on Steve’s and smiles so softly, “You’re struggling to bind?” Eddie asks.
“Yeah, it’s like- his chest… he- he’s doesn’t-“
“Yeah, I- I know, Steve.” Eddie nods, “Would Axl be okay with me knowing this? Or, like, not?”
“I don’t know.” Steve so sobs, “I shouldn’t have said anything without his permission, but I just trusted you and I needed to talk to- to someone. And I’m…”
“Okay.” Eddie cleared his throat, “okay, will Axl be home tonight?”
“Yeah.” Steve sniffled and checked his watch, “It’s almost curfew.”
“Okay. Have you got any bandages? Or what have you been using?”
“Yeah, bandages… cloth.” Steve rubbed his nose.
“That’s okay, uhm, how about you go get those for me?”
Steve, confused but too mentally tired to think much of it, goes and does just that. He brings back the rolls of bandages and cloth they were using and dumps them on the table in front of Eddie. Eddie smiles and moves the cloth aside, looking at the strip of bandages.
“The wider ones are better. These are a little thin, but… does he use a sports bra most days?”
Steve nods.
“Okay, I suggest getting some wider bandages. But I can make these work.” Eddie grins.
“What?” Steve grumbles.
“Come here.” Eddie shuffles his chair over to Steve, “Arms up, not up in the air but like, out so I can get around.”
Steve follows his command yet again, and watches with confused eyes as Eddie begins to wrap the bandage around Steve’s chest, talking him through the process; where to place his hands for best compression, and insisting it can’t be too tight or it will hurt.
“It probably won’t be perfectly flat, they never are, but it will be better.” Eddie smiled, “Surgery is always an option, but they won’t let him get that until he’s like, eighteen.”
“How do you-“
“Hey, dad, sorry I’m late, I have a math test tomorrow and we-“ Axl chattered, walking through and shutting the door, “… uhm, hi Eddie.”
“Hi!” Eddie grinned and waved at Axl before looking back at Steve’s chest and fastening the bandage together with the clip at Steve’s side.
“What are you doing?”
Steve felt his heart drop, “I’m- I’m sorry, kid, I shouldn’t have told him but- I was just, I needed someone to talk to, and- It’s not and excuse-“
“No, it’s not.” Axl dumped his bag down on the kitchen counter and walked over, “You should ask before assuming.”
“I know.” Steve furrowed his brow, “I don’t usually-“
“But it’s okay because it’s just Eddie.” Axl shrugged and leant down to look at the bandges wrapped tight around Steve’s chest, “I figured you’d already told all of your friends.”
“Nope.” Eddie shook his head and smiled, “He certainly did not. Cool name, by the way- Guns and Roses?”
“Yeah.” Axl nodded.
“Sick.” Eddie grinned.
“Did you do this?” Axl pointed to the bandages.
“Wait, you’re not upset with me?” Steve asked.
“No, I know you’re not just gonna out me to some cunt who’s gonna beat me up-“
“Language.” Steve pressed.
“Besides, Eddie’s gay and a self proclaimed Freak, out of most of your friends he’s the least likely to judge.”
“Right you are, little gremlin.” Eddie smiled up at him.
“I’m still sorry.” Steve murmured.
“Don’t be.” Axl playfully punched his arm.
“Also, to answer your question,” Eddie continued, “Yes, this is how you bind. I can show you how to do it, if you like? I suggest bigger bandages but this can work for now.”
“Yes please.” Axl nodded, and Eddie immediately started to unwound the bindings on Steve’s chest.
He re-tied it, talking step by step to Axl, and then he got Axl to bind Steve’s chest himself, Eddie talking him through the process.
Then, Eddie got Axl to do it on himself, over his baggy jumpers, because it’s a little different doing it on someone else. Steve sat at the table and watched in awe as Eddie animatedly talked Axl through the process, and Axl couldn’t wipe his smile off his face.
The moment it was done he raced off to his room to do it properly. Eddie went and got them another beer.
“Thank you.” Steve smiled at him, “So much.”
“No problem, Steve-o.” Eddie grinned, “I have not done that in a while, it was kinda fun.”
“What do you mean?” Steve furrowed his brow, and Eddie shrugged and pulled up his shirt.
The first thing Steve noticed was the added ink Eddie had gotten since ‘86. The second thing he noticed was the bat bites scattered over his skin. And the third… two scars stretching along his chest.
Steve remembered being back there, crying and trying to add compression on all of Eddie’s scars. He remembered finding bandages already wrapped around Eddie’s chest, under his clothes, but he thought nothing of it, figured Eddie had cut his chest open or something. Not… this.
Eddie blushed and lowered his shirt, shrugging up at Steve.
“Oh my god.” Steve muttered, and Eddie just stared at him, “Holy shit, you’re like Axl?!”
“Yeah.” Eddie nodded, and then a couple of seconds later Axl was body slamming into the back of Eddie and wrapping himself around him.
“I didn’t think anyone was like me here.” Axl mumbled, obviously trying to not cry, “I always thought you’d be the coolest out of dad’s friends.”
Eddie snickered and gave Axl a hug back, “How’d you go, did you get it?”
“I think so.” He said, stepping back and showing off to them. It’s the first time Steve had seen him wear anything less than a baggy shirt. He was dressed in a cropped muscle tee, and he looked so confident.
Steve started to cry.
“Hey! Look at you, it looks so good, kid.” Eddie grinned, “If you want I can show you how to draw facial hair on to look realistic.”
“Fuck yeah.” Axl grinned, “I want a moustache.”
Eddie snickered and looked back at Steve, his face dropped when he saw him crying, “Hey, Stevie-“
“Thank you.” Steve sobbed and buried his head in his hands, “Holy fuck, thank you so much.”
Eddie smiled softly, “It’s no issues, of course. Anything to help a fellow freak like me, huh?” He smiled up at Axl, “I should be thanking you, it feels nice to have another person like me around again.”
“Do you know more people like us?”
Eddie nodded, “You know my friend Gareth? Yeah, he’s like us, and a two more people but they’re not in town.”
“Oh my god, really?!” Axl grinned, “This is so awesome, can I please come to one of your gigs or something?”
“I thought you were too cool for that stuff?” Steve snickered.
Axl flipped him off, “I just wanna meet him… as a guy.”
Eddie leant out and ruffled Axl’s hair, “Yeah, kid, whenever you like- though, a band practice would be more ideal for a fourteen year old.”
Axl frowned dramatically and went to get himself a drink.
“Seriously, Eddie, thank you.” Steve murmured, “I haven’t seen him that happy in… not in years. He’s just a kid, he’s meant to be that happy every day.”
Eddie nodded, “I know how he feels. I knew I was different really young too, and when I was about twelve I told my mum and she told me to never tell anyone. And then she died, when I was sixteen, and I ended up telling dad for some- I don’t even know why, he beat the shit out of me and I ran away. Like, away away, up to Indi. Wayne found me then, when my dad told him what happened, and bought me home and let me be Eddie.” He shrugged, “I remember the first time I tried binding with duct tape, Wayne found me crying in front of the mirror about it and he came in with bandages and helped me figure it out. I went on testosterone when I turned eighteen, so.”
Steve smiled, “I’m sorry you went through that, Eddie.”
“I’m sorry you’ve been going through this clueless. Wayne had no idea either, he’s got a book on how to look after trans kids now, but he didn’t back then, I can tell you that.” Eddie laughed, “Thanks for being his dad, and like, being a good one.”
“He’s my kid, I can’t just… of course, I love him.”
Eddie smiled, “You don’t know how rare that is for people like Axl and I.”
“I don’t understand why.”
“Me either.” Eddie hummed, “You’re a really good dad, Steve. A really good guy.”
“I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do.”
“Yeah, but you care. More than most people do. You care so much.” Eddie gently took Steve’s hand into his own, “I’m sure you already know but being Axl’s dad isn’t gonna be easy, especially not in fucking Hawkins, but so long as you just stick around and… care, then things are gonna be a whole lot easier for him. It means so much to him, and me, even.”
Steve smiled at him and squeezed Eddie’s hands as a thank you, “Can you stick around too?” He asked, “Help Axl in the places I cant?”
Eddie grinned, “Yeah, of course I can, Stevie.”
“Thank you.” Steve sighed, rubbing his temples, “You have no idea how grateful I am that you’re in my life.”
There was a moment of silence before Eddie whispered, “You have no idea how grateful I am that you’re in mine.”
They looked at eachother, and Steve felt his heart in his throat.
“Okay…” Axl murmured, rolling back over to the table, “You guys are clearly having a moment so I’m gonna stop eavesdropping.”
“Hey!” Steve scoffed, “You little shit.”
Axl chuckled and scruffed Steve’s hair, “Thanks dad, I love you too. You’re my best friend.”
Steve absolutely blossomed at that, he’d never been so happy to hear those words. He used to hear them all the time, when Axl was really little. But then he became a preteen and being friends with your dad suddenly stopped being cool. He’s ecstatic right now.
“Thanks Eddie.” Axl smiled at him, giving Eddie a fist bump as he passed, “Can we like… talk sometime? I just wanna-“
“Know if someone’s gone through all the crazy shit as you?” Eddie offered and Eddie nodded, “How about we get some lunch this weekend, huh? Then hang out at the music store?”
“Sounds good.” Axl grinned and continued to walk past, “I’ll let you guys get back to your moment.”
“Moment?” Steve asked, red in the face, watching Axl walk down the hallway to his room, “There’s no moment, what moment?!”
“Don’t worry about it.” Axl shouted back and walked into his room.
“Axl!” Steve shouted out.
“Axl!” Eddie shouted too, “What fucking moment do you mean?”
Axl poked his head back out the door, “You were having a nice moment about friendship and being a good dad and blah blah blah!” Axl shouted and Steve and Eddie both relaxed, “I just shouldn’t be evesdropping of course.”
“Okay.” Steve nodded and looked back to Eddie, watched the sparkle in his eyes dance as he shifted to look back at Steve. And he melted at the sight.
“Also, this would be a great time to do something about that crush you’ve had on Eddie for years, dad!”
And with that, Axl’s door was slammed shut.
Steve and Eddie were staring at eachother. Eddie was slowly turning more and more red.
“You have a crush on me?”
Steve’s lack of an answer probably was a dead giveaway, but he hoped Eddie was oblivious.
“Oh.” Eddie muttered, and clearly he’s not oblivious, “You have a crush on me- god, I sound fifteen. Wow, you are into me- Steve- you- okay.” Eddie cleared his throat and fixed his posture, “Do- wow, huh, uh… do- do you wanna- do you wanna go out with me? Okay, there, I did it.”
“You’re asking me out?” Steve asked, a little gobsmacked.
“Yeah.” Eddie bit at his nails as he looked at Steve nervously.
“Yes.” Steve swallowed, “Yeah, I- yeah… can- does tomorrow work? Seven?”
“Seven.” Eddie smiled, his shoulders relaxing, “Yeah, a date at seven.”
“Okay.” Steve smiled too, “Wait, is this just… I just need to know if this is a date or like, with the intention of something more serious.”
“Uh…” Eddie swallowed, “Considering I’ve been into you for years now, I’d prefer something a little more permanent. But-“
“You don’t care I’ve got a kid?”
“No, I-“ Eddie ducked his head, blushing, “To be honest I’ve kinda always been jealous he wasn’t our kid.”
“Holy shit.” Steve muttered, “I thought you didn’t want kids?!”
“Yeah.” Eddie shrugged, “I don’t know, you make all my wires cross, Steve. I’ve pictured a whole ass future with you.”
And Steve can’t wait to make that future come true.
And Axl grows up with a second dad who helps him through his transition too, has a little more intel. And Steve loves watching them as they chat about their shared experiences being trans, and cries when Axl comes out and shows off his excessive leg hair one afternoon, and when Eddie starts compulsively making fun of his voice cracks at age seventeen, and when Eddie’s sitting there and talking him through the procedure he’ll endure for his first surgery and- Steve’s just overwhelmed with love for them both.
And then he and Eddie adopt a little girl and Steve’s just so in awe of how Eddie is with the baby, and how Axl instantly takes to the protective big brother role. And just picture it, okay!? Just picture Steve and Eddie having a family together, okay?!

Eddie’s zoned out as he prattles off care instructions and wraps up the man’s (very strong) bicep, careful to tug it tight enough as to not hurt him.
He’s distracted. Has been for the better part of the past hour.
Steve’s been the ideal client. Perfect, he might even say.
Hardly nervous at all as he climbed into the chair and made himself comfortable. No flinching at the needle, and he’s been as easy-going as anything.
His eyes were heavy lidded and fluttery as the needle pressed into his skin, a soft smile gracing his face as he watched his spitfire little girl flip through Eddie’s books for a design she liked.
“You find anything you like, baby?” He asked.
Eddie took a pause to peek up at the little redhead across the room. Her hair in two little braids, eyebrows furrowed, and tongue poked out in concentration.
“No, I wanted a dinosaur but these are all flowers and stuff,” She pouted.
Eddie huffed a quiet laugh.
“Tell you what kiddo,” He stole a glance at Steve, blissed out in the chair. “Since your dad has been such a good sport and you’ve been so good, I’ll draw you up a dinosaur when we’re finished okay?”
Max’s eyes lit up and she giggled behind her hands and nodded.
Now that Steve’s tattoo is done, a pumpkin on the inside of his bicep, he sits up and calls her over.
“Come see, pumpkin.”
And Eddie hadn’t asked, but now, as he watches her bounce across the room and gasp at her dad’s tattoo he feels his face split into a smile.
“Daddy it's me!”
Steve laughs and it's so so lovely. He drops a kiss to the top of her head before he stands.
“It is you, bug.”
Eddie peels off his gloves and puts his hands on his hips.
“Alright miss lady. Let’s draw you a dinosaur. What kind are you thinking? Stegosaurus, pterodactyl?”
She jumps up with her arms bent to her body and roars.
“I’m a T-Rex!”
Eddie laughs and gets settled at his table.
“Alright firecracker, let’s draw you a T-Rex.”
*****
After he’s sketched the outline, a little cartoon dinosaur, he runs it through on his temporary tattoo sheet and sets to “prepping” his station.
He sprays down the chair and tugs on more gloves.
He sits on his stool and pats the chair.
“Come on up Red.”
She squeals and runs over and Steve hoists her up onto the chair.
In the meantime, Eddie rolls over to his mini-fridge in the corner and grabs the cold rag he’s had in the freezer.
He can hear Steve whisper as he tucks a loose hair behind her ear.
“You excited, huh? My brave girl.”
And Eddie’s heart melts.
He rolls back over and puts on his serious face.
“Okay Max. You’re gonna feel a sting but you’re a tough girl, aren’t ya?”
She furrows her brows and nods. She rolls up her own sleeve.
“I’m strong!”
He can’t help but smile.
“You sure are. Look at those muscles!”
He peels off the plastic covering the ink.
“Where do you want to put it?” He asks.
She pats her upper arm.
“Here. Just like daddy!”
Eddie grins again and Steve is biting back a smile from his spot behind the chair. Eddie sends him a wink and watches the flush bloom across his cheeks.
“You ready, Red?”
Her focus face is back and she nods resolutely.
Eddie lines up the sheet and sticks it to her arm. She turns her head back towards Steve.
“Daddy? Will you hold my hand?”
As if Eddie’s heart wasn’t already a puddle on the floor.
“Here we go, sweetheart,” Eddie says as he presses the cold rag to her skin.
He hisses through his teeth and grimaces like he’s in pain. He holds back a laugh as she puffs out her cheeks and visibly squeezes her dad’s hand.
“You’re doing so good, baby,” Steve tells her.
She lets out a sharp little breath as Eddie shifts and presses the rag back against her skin.
She looks up towards him and giggles.
“It’s not that bad. I’m tough like daddy.”
He flops the rag back down on his tray and goes to peel the paper away from her skin.
“Yes you are!” He says as he smiles down at her cute little dinosaur, “Do you like it?”
She looks down at it and squeals.
“Look daddy! Look!”
Steve hoists her up onto his hip and swings her around, giggles filling the space and Eddie’s heart.
“I love it, pumpkin! You’re the coolest little girl in the whole world!”
He puts her down and she runs around the chair to where Eddie is peeling off his second set of gloves and bumps right up next to him. He furrows his eyebrows and goes to ask what’s wrong when he’s interrupted.
“Look dad! Just like Eddie!”
And now that he looks at it he sees it. Max’s dinosaur is in the same place as her dad’s tattoo. But it’s in the same place as Eddie’s dragon too.

I got a request for single dad!steve & I'm so here for it! I think this little ficlet is going to be the first part in a little series. I have so many ideas, so let me know what you think!
It’s a rare Thursday off that changes Eddie’s life forever.
He’s sitting on his favorite bench in the park when a high pitched yell catches his attention. Looking up from the drawing he’s been zoned into for the past hour, Eddie glances left and then right over his shoulder to see a small girl trying not to cry on the ground.
As a children’s librarian, Eddie is more than familiar with the little lip wobble that’s happening and the usual tears that follow. If he were back at work, his arsenal of book references and character impressions would be the perfect fix. Out in the wild, Eddie isn’t as well equipped.
It doesn’t take a genius to comfort a hurt person, however.
Setting aside his pencil and sketch book, Eddie gets up from the bench and walks quietly over to the little girl. He’s impressed she’s not screaming with agony – the scrape on her knee is worse than most and more than worth a wail or two. Instead of questioning this little girl’s integrity as he approaches, Eddie slowly kneels down in front of her.
“Everything okay over here? I was halfway through my drawing of a goblin when I thought I heard one squealing in the grass.”
It only takes a second of sniffing for the girl to look up at him with a wet attempt at a smile. “I’m not a goblin. I’m a girl. A human girl.” Said girl tries to sound defiant and strong, despite the tears still welling up in her eyes. She’s so close to forgetting her pain, it’s almost comical.
“Are you sure? Some of the goblins I’ve seen sort of look like little girls. They even have pigtails like you,” Eddie says, pointing at the two long braids thrown over either shoulder. The pink helmet she’s wearing does nothing to hide them.
Just like that, the little girl’s mind is no longer on the injury to her knee – instead, her ire is pointed right at Eddie and his theory on goblins. It’s both sharp and adorable. Especially when the little girl says “I’m absolutely positive. My name is Judy and I’m a human girl, not a goblin.”
This time, Eddie can’t help himself, a chuckle is let loose.
“Okay, okay. You’re a human girl. I just needed to make sure. Goblins are very tricky and I like to know what I’m getting myself into.” Eddie pauses for a second to watch Judy’s eyes grow as interest in his words settle in. It’s still astounding to see wonder light up a person’s world.
Instead of lingering on that thought, Eddie puts a hand between them, intent on introducing himself the proper way now that her goblin status is ironed out. “It’s very nice to meet you, Judy. I’m Eddie.”
Judy doesn’t hesitate to slip her little hand into Eddie’s. Her grip is firm and so is the look she gives him as they shake hands. “There’s a man at the library that’s named Eddie. My daddy talks about him all the time.”
For a second, Eddie is stumped by the girl’s ability to be so candid and loose with her words. He always forgets that children have no filter; it’s both gloriously refreshing and shocking as all hell. Once he’s past the initial rock of his world, Eddie tries to push past his befuddlement. “Huh, it’s kind of a small world. I’m the children’s librarian at the library in town.”
Judy’s adorable hazel eyes lit up as Eddie spoke, realization colors her expression. “That’s why you look so familiar! You’re Mr. Munson, who does all the voices when you read.” She crosses her arms then, trying to look petulant. “No wonder you thought I was a goblin!”
After that, it’s easy to check over Judy’s wounds while they talk about the book he’s going to be reading at story time this week. She’s a fast learner that immediately catches onto the runaround that Eddie is trying to subtly give her. By the third attempt at asking him for the book’s title, Judy gives up with a loud sigh. “You grownups and your secrets. Don’t tell me, then!”
Eddie believes he might cave into the cutest little pout he’s ever seen, but his willpower comes back just in time. “You’ll have to come to story time to find out. The surprise is half the fun.”
Before Judy can agree with him, another loud voice registers in Eddie’s ears. This time, it’s very deep and masculine, more than likely belonging to the dad that Judy’s been mumbling about. He’s proven right a second later when she pipes up “I’m over here, daddy!”
Eddie is not prepared at all for the sight of Judy’s dad running towards them. Everything from the moment Eddie heard Judy’s voice to the familiarity of talking to her makes sense now – Judy’s father is the man Eddie’s been checking out behind the counter for months. The strong thighs and wide shoulders are strong players in Eddie’s fantasies. To be perfectly honest, it’s all a bit too much.
He’s thinking about how small the world really is when that deep voice cuts in –
“Judy, oh my god – I thought you got lost on the path again. What happened to you? Are you okay?”
It’s almost like Eddie isn’t standing right there with a couple of his lunch napkins pressed to Judy’s leg. Even Judy seems to think so.
“Daddy, I’m fine. Eddie is taking care of me. He’s the man from the library, daddy. That does the voices!”
Like he’s been shocked, Judy’s dad jolts to the present where Eddie is there next to him, where their shoulders are brushing and a little girl is watching the whole thing unfold. Eddie lets him come back to himself before using his free hand to wave. “Hi, Judy’s Dad!”
The worried look that’s been on the man’s face since he walked drops down to the ground with Judy’s bike, only to be replaced with a soft smile, sort of like the one Judy first flashed him a few minutes ago. Eddie’s taken aback by how beautiful the man is – despite him being kind of a jerk for a quick second, Eddie is absolutely still on board the hot dad train. Especially now that he knows the little girl the dad belongs to.
They share a look that’s way too long in the presence of such a young person, so Eddie clears his throat. Only then does Judy’s dad start acting like a human again. “I’m Steve. Steve Harrington. Not uh – not just Judy’s dad.”
“Steve Harrington. You’re the middle school guidance counselor, right? I supply a lot of books to Nancy in the library and she’s always talking about you. I had no idea this little one was the kid she’s forever going on about.”
“Yeah, yeah that’s me. I – you know Nancy? It’s crazy to think we’ve been running in the same circles and never met before.” Steve’s cheeks turn a little red then, almost as if he’s admitting to something more than just curiosity.
It’s a gorgeous sight, one that Eddie hopes he gets to see more often.
“She’s been trying to get me to meet her friend Steve for a while. I never thought much about being set up but now I’m kind of sorry I never took her up on the offer.” He stops for a second and looks between a dad and his daughter. “Maybe this way is better, though. More raw – organic.”
The blush brightens on Steve’s cheeks and Eddie knows he’s got him.
“Are you up for it now? I hear the ice cream sundaes at Hop’s are the perfect treatment for a scraped up knee.”
The gasp he gets from Judy is almost as telling as the large smile on Steve’s lips. There’s no hesitation in the way Steve nods eagerly.
“I think that’s exactly what the doctor ordered.”

The Fellowship of the Cake
For @steddiemicrofic prompt: cake | WC: 311 | G | no TW | single dad steve uwu babysitter eddie uwu Edit: This is a trilogy now ;-;
Steve could have informed them he finished work early. Therefore, it was his fault he got slapped in the face with something moist and sticky as soon as he entered the kitchen.
He could safely open his left eye and see Eddie in the middle of his kitchen, hands on his mouth and eyes wide. In panic or glee, it was hard to say because, again, one eye. But knowing him, probably both.
"Care to explain?" he asked while his daughter hugged his leg in greeting. When he opened his mouth he got to taste the goo on his face. Vanilla.
"You're early," Eddie murmured. Not an explanation.
"Cake missile!" Joy exclaimed with glee.
The culprit was obvious, so Steve turned his gaze to the only other adult in the room.
"Uhhh," Eddie was approaching him cautiously with a washcloth. "So we bought a cake-"
"Birthday cake!"
"Yes. But it got squashed."
"Eddie sat on it!"
"So we got a second one, but then we got an idea-"
"Food fight!"
"Exactly! But we made a deal because we are civilized. Right, Joy?"
Meanwhile, Eddie reached him and started gently wiping the cake off his face.
"One throw each. And clean up after!" she recited.
Steve hummed.
"So I should get one too, right?"
Eddie froze.
"Steve."
Joy, like the best daughter she was, put a lump of cake in his hand.
"Start running, Munson."
He tried, but Steve's old jock skills were still intact. After hitting Eddie's hair with ease, he grabbed the squirming man and hugged him close.
"Thanks for the cake," he said with honesty. "I'll help you wash your hair later," he offered.
It was something he's been dreaming of for years.
"Yeah?"
The breathiness in his voice sounded promising. Steve tightened his grip, shoving his face closer to his neck.
"And you could do mine?"
"Yeah. Okay."

love your work and everything you do, so excited for the month of march fics coming up !!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ a fic a day is incredible and idk how you do it honestly 🙏🙏🙏 does this mean that hold is on hiatus for now ?
Oh thank you!!!
It was so fun doing @steddielovemonth so I'm excited to tackle Stobin Month! I don't write enough fics about them and them alone so it's been fun so far.
Hold is on a temporary hiatus. I'm aiming to get the next chapter out in April. Right now, I have so much going on, but I start a new job next week so my writing time is cutting down drastically. So I'm not able to tap into the headspace I need to write hold.
I added an update to the authors note for the last chapter, but to reiterate here: I AM NOT giving up on this story!! It's a passion project for me, but since it doesn't have a timeline or any outside pressure other than wanting to get the next chapter to you all, it has to be the first to go. I need to focus on my posting challenge, my STRBB fics, and my exchange fic (and I have a few big bangs I plan on signing up for!!) so I'll be shifting gears a little.
If I wasn't at such a pivotal moment in hold, I think I'd be able to continue writing as normal. But I have an Eddie scene and an Eleven scene to write for the next chapter that are heavier, so I need to do them the right way and not just knock it out.
Thank you all for the support and understanding!!! I'm having so much fun and feeling really fulfilled with my current writing load, so the patience about the hold situation is very appreciated!! That being said... Here's a teaser (under the cut) for the next chapter to hold everyone over (no pun intended) until I can post it:
“Hey, hey,” Steve coos, coming to a halt at the edge of her crib. He picks her up without hesitation, sending a sharp pain up his left arm as he cuddles her close. It doesn’t matter, he could care less about his pain as long as she’s okay. “You’re okay,” he says, “Daddy’s got you.”
“Steve!” Robin huffs as she comes up beside them. “You shouldn’t be picking her up.” Whatever look he gives her must tell her everything she needs to know. She sighs and runs a hand over Charlotte’s wild dark hair. “I can hand her to you so you don’t hurt your hand,” she says softly, “let me help.”
He presses his lips to Charlotte’s head and sways in place, shushing her. Charlotte, not Robin of course. “I know,” he tells Robin then goes back to talking to Charlotte. “We woke you up before you were ready, huh? I’m sorry, sweetpea.” He adjusts his hold on her to check her diaper, nose wrinkling. “Sure you want to help?” he asks Robin.
“I think I can handle a dirty diaper.”
Charlotte’s cries have stopped, but there are big tears on her cheeks and her bottom lip is pouted out as she looks up at Steve. He’d do anything for that face.
Steve has to look away, eyes going to the bare, white ceiling as the fury comes back to him all at once. He blinks his own tears out of his eyes, all of the emotions hitting him like a goddamn train. “She left her,” Steve breathes out. “She fucking left her, Rob.”
“She was so blasé about it too,” Robin punches out, walking away. She’s opening the drawers to grab something, closing them with force but not slamming.
“What’s that mean?” he asks, dropping another kiss to Charlotte’s head. He drifts over to the chair they stashed in here during the move, an extra from the set his mom gave him, and sits so Charlotte’s laying against his chest. The movement emphasizes the pain and settles his heart all at once, but Charlotte’s sniffles and little noises make it worth it.
Robin takes a moment, putting together the outfit for Charlotte. “Does she not have any dresses?”
Steve’s brow furrows as he thinks about it. “I think she’s grown out of a few. I don’t know.”
“I’m all for giving the bird to gender stereotypes and letting her wear boy clothes,” Robin says as she holds up the basketball onesie that doesn’t fit Charlotte anymore but Steve can’t part with, “but I don’t see any onesies with snaps that fit her and pants are going to be a nightmare for the foreseeable future.”
Shit.
Steve groans and adjusts Charlotte so her cast is more comfortable against him. “I didn’t even think about that.”
“When would you have had the time?” Robin asks, closing the drawer. She’s out of the room before Steve can answer her.

Single dad Steve who works a lot and feels bad that he can’t volunteer at the elementary school so when winter volunteer opportunities open up he tells his kiddo to sign him up for whatever they think is the funnest option. Which is how Steve ends up being the sole volunteer for the holiday recital. A fact he initially is upset with until he meets the music teacher aka Mr. Eddie, and suddenly Steve is glad he doesn’t have to compete with any of the other moms for Eddie’s attention.
Not that he’d have to compete. Eddie Munson falls in love with Steve the minute he walks into his classroom in a yellow sweater and makes a lame dad joke.

You Better Make It Soon (Before You Break My Heart)
Monday mornings are the bane of Steve Harrington’s existence. His alarm clock was blaring when he woke up. It read 6:32 on the clock and Steve groaned as he sat up in his bed. Steve was in the middle of brushing his teeth when he heard Dustin’s alarm going off, and a few minutes later he heard Max’s. The twins insisted on having their own alarm clocks, saying having their dad wake them up for school in the sixth grade was embarrassing. Steve couldn’t lie, he got a bit too emotional about alarm clocks that day.
While they may have grown out of Steve waking them up every day, they certainly haven't grown out of him making them breakfast and packing their lunches. Dustin gets 2 eggs, scrambled, and a slice of toast with grape jelly, for lunch it's a ham and cheese sandwich with a baggy of lays and a green apple. Max gets 2 eggs sunny side up, and 2 pieces of toast with butter, and lunch is a pb&j with strawberry jelly, a baggy of Fritos, and a banana. It's been this way since they could eat actual food.
Steve could tell you every single thing about these kids. And to some parents, he was way too involved. He went to every science fair, school recital, and kiddie soccer games. To him, that was the bare minimum. As a kid, his parents never showed up for anything, always out of town on business. It didn’t matter now, he had cut contact with them the second he got the phone call from the hospital. That was the day he learned Jane was one, pregnant, and two left him the kids.
Jane was his second girlfriend in high school, they had only been together for 6 months, but that was enough. Last he heard about her, she was somewhere in Nevada with a sparkly new family. Steve didn’t care that she had a new boyfriend, or husband, he cared that she had new kids, and never once bothered to check in on Max or Dustin.
Steve was scared shitless driving to the hospital, Robin in the passenger seat. She read from a book of 100 baby names, going down the list. No names that start with J, B, or W was the only rule, “I’m not letting you give these beautiful new humans terrible names Steve, they're already having to deal with the legacy that is ‘King Steve’ at least let them have actually good names.”
He was grateful for Robin. She knew just how to distract him and focus on the good parts of the situation, rather than the terrible ones. In the end, they settled on Maxine and Dustin. So by the time they drove the two-hour trip to Indianapolis, they had at least the names ready, maybe not a crib, or food, or clothes, or dippers, but they had names. And at the time, that was a win in Steve’s book.
Dustin was the first down the stairs. He almost falls on the last few steps.
Steve had to hold in a laugh, “Hey Dust buddy, I need you to slow down on the steps, you have enough trouble keeping your teeth in, I don't need you knocking extra ones out.”
The curly-headed boy sits down in his usual spot at the table, “That's a low blow Dad. And I'm sorry, you should be happy to have a kid that's excited for the first day of school. You know I could be out smoking crack or something! Instead, I'm going down the stairs a bit too excitedly. Count your blessings.”
“That was far too much for seven in the morning,” Max says walking in.
She had he hair back in a ponytail at the base of her neck. Steve knows she hates her hair in her face, she usually asks him to braid it, but apparently, she's grown out of that too.
“Alright gremlins eat up fast,” he sets down their plates in front of them, “can't be late for your first day.”
If you ever wanted to experience the different levels of hell, school drop-off was the 7th. It's like grown adults lose all knowledge of driving the second they enter the parking lot. Steve worked at the high school right next to the middle school and grade school, he always parks in the staff parking and walks the kiddos to school. Unfortunately for him, however, was that the only entrance to the staff parking was only accessible through the middle school drop-off. At least the last two years and this next year he’ll actually have middle schoolers to drop off.
The middle school had a poster hanging up front “Class of 86’ is our year!”
Before he could even put the car in park the kids start to open the doors, “Hey, hey, hey,” they pause their movements, “First don't open doors on moving cars, don’t be reckless. Second, no getting out of the car before I hear those three magical words.”
“Do we have to?” Dustin asks from the back.
“Love you, Dad,” Max says at the same time.
Steve leans over to the passenger seat and gives Max a kiss on the forehead, “And that's why you get shotgun.”
Max unlocks her door and off to the school doors. He hears Dustin unlock the doors in the back, but Steve hits the lock button. Dustin tries again, and Steve locks it.
The boy sighs, “Love you, Dad.”
“Love you too Dust Buddy.”
Finally, Dustin leaves the car and practically sprints to the school. Steve drove off, finally making it to the staff parking.
He got a job as a PE and health teacher a few years after graduating high school. Technically he was a volunteer for the first 4 years. They couldn’t hire him as a teacher without a degree. So the school offered to give him the job if he took classes at Hawkins Community College. And for four years, Steve worked at the school during the day and took classes at night. The kids were in daycare for the day, and Robin came over every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to watch the kids. Steve offered to pay her, but she refused any money.
“As long as I can raid your fridge, and watch late-night cable, you can call it even Harrington.”
Some days he was so exhausted that he wouldn't even make it to his bed, just crash on the couch. By the time he graduated with his degree, the kids were graduating from kindergarten.
And now look at them. A single dad who barely made it through high school, now a high school teacher with two straight-A kids.

My Daughter’s Keeper
Summary: “You need someone, Steve,” Nat had told him over a glass of bourbon last week. “Someone good.”
“I can’t afford anyone, Nat. Especially someone good. That’s how I ended up here.”
Natasha stared at him for a few moments, and he could practically see the gears in her head turning.
“What?” he asked exasperatedly.
“I may have a solution.”
A/N: After almost two years since I first thought of the idea for this, it's finally done!
Finished it just in time for Steggy Week 2022 Day 4: Trope of Genre. Genre is Rom-Com where Steve is a single dad in a custody battle for his daughter, and Peggy is a custody lawyer who comes highly recommended by Natasha.
Shout out to @steggyfanevents for hosting this event!

Steve found the office just fine. Even if it had been a complicated journey, the woman perched at the desk in front of an office typing furiously on her MacBook would’ve given it away.
“Steve Rogers?” she asked as soon as he was within her sights. There was something about her that looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place his finger on it.
“Yes,” he confirmed. “Angie I presume?”
“The one and only,” she winked before picking up the phone on her desk.
“Your ten o’clock is here, English.”
She hung up, and just a few short moments later, the door opened behind her.
A woman with shoulder length wavy brown hair appeared at the doorway, and Steve lost his breath. She was wearing a long sleeve maroon button up blouse and a pencil skirt. There was something about the way she held herself that told Steve she was a force to be reckoned with.
Ms. Carter hadn’t said a word, but Steve could already see why Natasha had led him to her.

The Two Pals (in the shower)
2nd entry for @steddiemicrofic which is also a follow up of the previous one: The Fellowship of the Cake Prompt: cake | WC: 311 | T | no TW
The kitchen clean-up apparently meant getting all the leftover cake on themselves. Steve felt sticky all over and wanted to shower as soon as possible. Partially to get rid of the icing under his neckline, but mostly to get Eddie in there with him.
They circled around each other, hip-checking and gently nudging out of the way as they cleaned. Steve wanted more.
He wanted Eddie smearing icing on Joy's and his noses every day.
He wiped his daughter's face clean while Eddie turned on some cartoons.
"We need fifteen minutes to clean up." He handed her a juice box. "Be good."
Then, finally, he pulled on Eddie's shirt, leading him towards the bathroom. When the door closed, he looked him over to check the damage - white streaks against black clothes.
"I think we need to do laundry as well. I'll lend you something."
Eddie hovered there awkwardly, and Steve's brain started heating up.
"What are we doing?"
"I- I said I'll help you with the hair." He was losing his momentum rapidly. He sounded pathetic.
"Okay, but why?" Eddie pressed on and crossed his arms. Steve didn't like that.
"Because I-" he paused to really think about his answer. "I was thinking we could be... more than friends?"
He not only sounded pathetic. He was pathetic.
But Eddie was uncrossing his arms, the tension was seeping out.
"Okay. We can try that."
Steve got his footing back under himself. They stripped in front of each other, and he would feel bad for staring if he hadn't noticed Eddie ogling his ass.
The washing machine gets turned on, and he hesitates again but this time, Steve nudges him gently forward.
"Let's shower together. Everyone will be here soon."
The steam encloses them in a warm alcove, perfect for first tentative touches. Their hands wander, but they don't dare kiss. Not yet.
