the sk8 ost has a bunch of tracks all called "S" with various variations used at different times. i've never seen anyone attribute each "S" theme to which races (or other skating scenes) they're used for, so i thought it would be fun to do that. (not saying that no one has done it, just that i haven't been able to find it.)

ACTUALLY SENDING THIS AS A QUESTION I feel you have good takes and I’ve wanted to talk to another Sk8 enjoyer about this!!! Don’t get me wrong I do like the overall gayness of it but my takeaway at the end of the anime was that it was way nicer about mental health coding than gay coding… I think everything with Reki’s character arc was really really nicely done and as an autism and ADHD haver I think Langa and Reki respectively were really nicely written. Reki’s whole character arc really is just what RSD does to a motherfucker

Disclaimer that i havent rewatched sk8 since 2021 and that feels like 2 lifetimes ago, but! I agree on the mental health rep! I also just found the interpersonal relationships fascinating. I felt like Reki's reaction to having the person he introduced to his interest become more accomplished was portrayed really well, it felt realistic. That entire miscommunication arc hit close to home for a lot of people from what i remember, I think they put a lot of care into the writing there. On a similar note, Cherry's grudge on Adam was so interesting to me, idk if I've seen another show do something quite like that (would love to). Cherry was my favorite and he paved the way for future blorbos. I think i just like seeing characters who appear analytical and logical make very emotional decisions when they also lack in emotional intelligence.

As for the queer rep, i may be delusional but i do think the entire show was queercoded, S being the safe space for exploration of identity in ways that wouldnt be allowed in "regular society". At least Cherry and Adam's stories cannot be read in any cishet way, to me.

I do however feel like Sk8's ending was rushed to tie everything together and it wasn't really...satisfying? Idk. The ending is a bit of a blur in my head as a result. I would've liked more from Tadashi and Kiriko. And more time in general to expand on character dynamics. But alas...they announced OVAs and a second season, no? Looking forward to that!

THANK YOU! you seem to be the ONLY person i have seen so far actually see arajin as a genuine character. Like u guys, its only been 5 episodes!! Why are you expecting arajin to have gone through an ENTIRE character arc in only 5 freaking episodes?!! Also yeah, he isnt going to be buddy/buddy with matakara right off the bat. Though indirectly, matakara was the source of his trauma! He avoids him because matakara sees a him that he (ara) genuinely believes doesnt exist. Like??!!! There's a lot of anime that don't seem to be going anywhere in the first half of a 12 ep arc. Though the creators have been sprinkling things in so there's been some progress. It's obviously going somewhere.

I remember while the first half of the first season of Free was airing nobody knew what was happening either. So idk I'm just here to see where the ride takes me (And Marito.... I love that crazy man)

Matakara is the source of his trauma and he keeps having flashbacks and nightmares about Matakara getting beat up and himself running away. Every time Matakara has said he believes in him we've seen more of the flashback.

On top of that, Utsumi's specialty in every single one of her anime so far has been characters who hate themselves, which doesn't really make people like them.

Free: Haru hated himself for making Rin quit swimming so he quit and sat in his bathtub all day... For years. And Rin hated himself because he wasn't good enough. People didn't really hate on Haru much but omg Rin got so much hate.

Banana fish: I don't think I even need to explain why Ash hates himself... But that's also made people understand why he hates himself and so they don't blame him lol

Sk8: Reki started hating himself in the middle of sk8 and there were so many people who gave up on him during that arc too.

well, I guess the ending would keep it open for a potential S2, if that were to ever happen. good episode with excellent animation, even though it didn't quite fulfill all of my desires for this show. would've liked mahoro to have a more active role in all this. this show also felt a bit limited by runtime and writing at times, but overall it was a pretty enjoyable experience with charming characters (who I would've liked to learn more about, tbh). matakara and ara's fight was amazing. I wanted more ichiya and senya than we got but I'm glad they resolved their issues too. I'm kinda curious as to what happened with ichiya after the fight. is he also in the bullet with senya, did he pass on, or is he in his own bullet? if it's the first option, I need a spinoff of their stupid domestic lives inside their separate spirit world

What do you like about Marie and Jordan individually and what do you like about them as a pair?

For Marie, I just love her so much. First of all, I am always happy to see a black girl lead in any kind of diverse, non-stereotypical, non-sassy-side character role like this.

But I also appreciated how realistic she was. Like, I understood almost every choice she made. I saw people get mad at her at the start for not always doing the altruistic, "right thing", but for most people, self-preservation comes first. She didn't owe those other characters anything (especially after how they treated her) and I loved that she had a back bone and would actually talk back to people. But at her core, she is still a good person despite everything that has happened to her and still chooses not to be corrupted by Vought's influence once she understands the true material cost.

For Jordan, they're just such a nuanced character. One, I always have a soft-spot for the Lancer character archetype. The highly capable, second best, who can never quite out-do the main character (e.i. bakugo, reki (from sk8), Ron from HP (fuck jkr, but no other examples are coming to me atm)), and Jordan is just that. Like, yeah, they were kind of a bitch at the start, but it's so clear that they are secretly a softie and the world and their experiences have forced them to have a tough shell. Also, their powers as an allegory for gender identity, yes, it's on the nose (although, as someone who grew up reading 90s/2000s manga like Ranma 1/2, not that unheard of), but I think the show handled questions of their identity really well.

And finally for Limoreau...

idk where to start. tbh, as someone who has been hyper fixating on characters and ships since high school, I never really have a clear explanation of why I ship the characters I do. I either like it or I don't. But Limoreau is such a pleasant surprise because the chemistry was there from the start, but it felt like one of those queer dynamics that the writers would be too scared to pursue (think Arthur/merlin or Gojo/Geto). I think the fact that our MAIN PAIRING is a queer, interracial couple with no white people, shouldn't be as revolutionary as it is in 2023, but it is! I hope this is a positive direction for on-screen storytelling.

But also everyone loves a classic "enemies to lovers" (yes, I know they're not EtL in the true sense, but I consider Rivals-to-lovers as a subset of EtL, so I'm using it as an umbrella term). I think the reason people like EtL dynamics (Especially in het pairings) is that there is always an underlying respect beneath the "hatred". Like, to see someone as a threat, you have to see them as at least an equal.

It was clear from the start that Marie and Jordan were more alike than different and it was Vought and the corrupt nature of Godolkin pushing them to compete. They're both lonely in different ways, and I love the idea of them finding acceptance and a home with each other (Also all three actors are extremely attractive and have great chemistry, so that never hurts).

Do I wish their relationship had been paced out a bit more? Yes. But that was my issue with all of Gen V. I think the whole show would have benefitted from 12 eps, instead of 8, because development was needed in most areas.

I also just want to note, for all the people saying their relationship "came out of nowhere", I truly feel that if Marie looked like Erin Moriarty and Jordan looked like Chace Crawford, most people would have clocked the romance from the beginning, jus saying...

Shadow: He’s [Reki] scared to race against Adam. *Laughs* Shadow, you’re the one who took him to the hospital and visibly sighed in the relief that he was okay.

Love how the people on the left are standing as far away from Adam as possible. Notice, how the people on Miya’s side are a bit closer as well since they’re not within Adam’s reach.

You know I think I’d be able to feel a bit more sympathy for Adam if his aunts version of love was the only one he knew. But that’s not what happened. He was loved by Tadashi, Kaoru, and Kojiro all normally, so it’s not like he doesn’t know other forms of love, this is all very much a choice.

Another reason I can’t feel sympathy is his pedophilia. Like, Adam believes that Langa is his Eve, right? Which means they’ll soon go to The Zone/Eden/The World Only For The Two Of Us. So, why is he excited for Miya to “bloom” so he can fall in love with him. Any sympathy you could have possibly gotten from me was destroyed with that comment.

Another post I’m gonna make is Cherry’s relationship with Carla and how fandom mischaracterizes it a bit.

I’m most definitely making a post on how Cherry couldn’t beat Adam, but he was able to match him. Like, I think it will be my life’s work for this blog. (other than the fanfics I’m planning)

As a person who is also a little sister, I understand Koyomi on a fundamental level.

One thing I don’t like is how the show tries to present Ainosuke’s aunts as a consequence. Like, it’s formula is: Adam hurts someone or harasses a child, but he still has to go home to his aunts! Ainosuke’s aunts are not a consequence, they are his backstory. They don’t abuse him because of his actions, they are the cause of his mentality. The only consequence he might have gotten was jail for perjury and other illegal acts, but that was shoehorned away. Some of this can be explained by Sk8 being 12 eps long, thus not given enough time to add more fundamental scenes, but god, I would have loved at least one scene where Ainosuke does anything antagonistic, faces a consequence, and it isn’t brushed off by him or thrown away by the narrative, thus staying with him for the rest of the story.

I know Tadashi probably has/had romantic feelings for Ainosuke, but honestly I can’t see them as having anything other than a platonic or familial bond, or, at the very least an unrequited one where one has romantic feelings and the other has familial/platonic.

One day I am going to make a post about how Tadashi was abused by the Shindos (including Ainosuke) just as much as Ainosuke himself was.

Ngl, I want Harry’s backstory. My man’s made it to the tournament no problem. Note: he had to have been the second person from Cherry’s bracket to win since we never saw anybody else cross during that run.

Sometimes I feel like Adam dislikes Joe. Like he goes “...Joe” because he’s Langa’s opponent instead of him, but I wonder if that bled over into their adolescence. Like, he wrote Joe’s name on the 3 of diamonds. I can’t help but wonder if he was also subtly calling him a third wheel like he does Reki later.

Shout out to Joe for doing the work Langa’s father cannot since he’s in a coffin six feet under in Canada!

I actually like how Joe still has a sliver of hope left for Adam, even though he probably wants to punch him more for Cherry’s sake than his own, he still cares for his old friend a tiny bit.

Even though Adam isn’t my favorite character in Sk8, I was kinda let down by the outfit that he wears. I don’t mind the other character wearing the same thing but Adam had such a presence that I thought this guy was going to do a quick change after accepting every beef cuz he gave off that energy. The Promised Neverland! A lot like attack on titan, Tokyo ghoul, and demon slayer. (2 seasons, 24 eps in total)(season 2 gets a lot of hate for being rushed but its not too bad imo)

Noragami! I binged watched both seasons cuz they were so good lots of action and really funny and loveable characters.

Sk8 infinity- 12 eps with cool characters and an interesting plot. One of the main characters reminds me a bit of shoto personality wise

Inuyasha is an old one, a lot of episodes, but pretty good.

Snow white with the red hair is good if you want cottage core (kinda) with romance and royalty that you can just gush over happily. (12 eps i think)

Fruits basket- romance and really good plot so many loveable characters to kin will make you cry (3 seasons i think?)

Kiss him, not me!- a bunch of guys fall head over heels for this girl after she loses weight, its mostly funny because shes a huge yaoi fan so she just wants all these cute guys to kiss each other. Reverse harem basically + a female love interest whos also completely in love mc as well. (Most of the guys are shallow cuz they only like the mc after she loses weight, except for one guy and the girl who love her either way) 1 season, (forgot how many eps but its prob 12)

School Live!- anime about cute school girls surviving a zombie apocalypse! Its actually pretty dark, but not as dark as the manga which I preferred, but its still pretty good and worth the 12 episodes

Spy x Family- just came about in April and i think theres one ep left! You can gush about cute family dynamics or the romance between the assassin and spy! Also really funny

Wonder Egg Priority- sad girls with sad backstories fighting! I say its a mix of horror with slice of life. The girls fight these monsters in a dream world kinda, the monsters being the struggles of girls who commited suicide... Monsterfied...? Deals with a lot of serious issues such as grooming, suicide, SA, eating disorders, child abuse, ect. 12 eps i think

Okay, so for those of you screaming “we were queerbaited!” Over the ending of SK8, y’all need to take a solid step back and look at context.

This is a show made in Japan. This show is made as a primarily shounen sports anime, for a Japanese audience, and I think they did their best to bring in characterization and relationships in a way that yes, might not be super obvious enough for the western audience, but is probably the best they were allowed to do.

Japan, sadly, is still lagging on public understanding and approval toward LGBT+ matters, and is also an extremely context based language and social system. The creators probably did their best to heavily imply without being specific because honestly that’s very much within the culture, and they weren’t trying to ruffle too many feathers.

In terms of Renga being canon or not, I believe it is and that’s the best we’re gonna get for now. I hope they surprise me and we get a movie or a season 2 or something where they go more into it, but for now I will be satisfied with what it is.

Except for Adam what the f*ck bring back the hot investigator and let her arrest him.
