What are your plans for the day ahead? I'll be taking a few of these, but sometime in the afternoon I plan to do some pre-work/research for an upcoming pitch. The potential client is huge and I personally like them as a consumer, so if we bag it it'll be a really big win.
This evening I have a meeting with my college org's alumni for a brainstorming session. Apparently the org has been in a dying state since the pandemic, and some alumni have volunteered to help in reorganization efforts, including myself.
What was the last thing you cleaned? I tidied the dining area and kitchen after having dinner last night.
When do you go to your soonest appointment? I don't have any booked any time soon.
What did you last order online? Yabu a week ago.
Can you see any bottles from where you’re sitting? Does the paper cup my coffee comes in count? It's right in front of me.
What time do you usually try to wind down in the evening? It's earlier these days; I usually want to be in bed by 11 PM and start falling asleep by midnight-ish.
What’s something you have been putting off? A side project. I want to kickstart a passion project of some sort so that I have somewhere else to invest my time and energy in besides work, but I still have no clue what it is I want to do. Do I start a blog, and if I do what do I write about? Do I want to be a contributor at some media publication, and which one would it be, what would I want to write about? I'm still at a loss but at least I'm already in that mindset where I know I want to be doing something more; it's just a matter of identifying the best thing I can do at the moment.
What restaurants do you frequently eat at? I don't dine in restaurants frequently tbh but when I do it's usually a Japanese place with a focus on either sushi or ramen.
Do you like banana pudding with a lot of bananas or more vanilla wafers? I do not enjoy banana pudding.
How many books would you guess you’ve read in the last 5 years? I'd say 2-3 is a safe guess.
What was the last message you sent? I was telling my friends that I'd love to discuss 3D with them the next time we get together. After my initial hype for the song died down, I had time to think about how polarizing the material actually is. I have no qualms with JK's part at all, but the rap part stinks to high heaven and everything about it is a goldmine for discussion.
Have you ate anything green today? What’s your favorite way to add greens to your diet? Uh, kind of? I had a chicken pesto wrap for breakfast if anything, lol.
When did you last light a candle or incense? Maybe more than a year ago. The last related thing I used was a reed diffuser, which I prefer these days.
Is it currently warm where you are? It's warm all the time where I live, except for maybe from Jan-Feb where the temperature can drop to the low 20s.
Have you ever fallen out of bed? Only as a kid.
What do you like on your hot dogs or burgers? I never have hotdogs but I imagine I'd look for mayo in mine. For burgers, I like a mayo-based sauce, caramelized onions, and jalapeños.
Are you currently listening to anything? Yes, BTS.
What’s your favorite thing to do outside? Go to coffee shops, visit museums, and walk/explore – especially if I'm in an unfamiliar place. I walked SO MUCH on my own when I was in Malaysia.
Are there any celebrities that you are a big fan of? These days that would be BTS. I like other celebrities too but don't really make as big of an effort to catch up with what projects they've been up to.
Do you ever watch award shows? Sure, but I only watch when BTS is expected to appear. That said I don't think I'm going to be watching any of them anytime soon, and maybe I'll just be voting from the side.
Do you usually run out of shampoo or conditioner first? Conditioner, by a mile. My hair is very thick and gets very hard when exposed to water due to all the bleaching it's been through, so I need multiple pumps of conditioner at a time to soften it back.
Do you have any LED lights in your home? I think our lights outside may be LED? Not fully sure though.
What is your biggest challenge? Having it in me to take risks.
What was the last sweet thing you’ve eaten? I had a slice of Starbucks' brookie cheesecake just now.
Do you prefer buying new clothes or thrift shopping for clothes? New ones, but I don't mind thrift shopping too. It's just that I do it much less often because knowing it was owned and worn before gives me minor ick.
What is something you need right now? Well, a demotion is definitely one of them. I just want to go back to what I was already previously doing.
What’s something you like that is blue? Denim jeans.
Have you treated yourself today? Kind of, but not as much as I would've wanted to as I'm already going over my budget. I already took myself to a coffee shop today but I think that's all I'm doing, even though I really want to get ramen.
Have you ever traveled alone? Nope.
What color is your most worn jacket/hoodie? Blue.
Who is someone you would like to get to know more? Val, the newest member of our work team. She's going to be replacing one of my senior bosses, who'll be migrating to Canada by next month. I really hope she lasts with us and has a good rapport with the team; but from what I've experienced from her so far, she seems to be promising so at least that's a positive.
What toy do you miss the most from your childhood? My cash registers haha. I miss how many buttons they had.
Have you ever lost something valuable to you? Sure, a few things here and there.
What or who has impacted your life the most? My parents.
Would you say you are toxic in any way? We all have at least one red flag, I feel.
What’s one of your favorite memories from the past year? Going to Thailand with my friends in what was my first non-family trip abroad.
How often do you use a straw? Maybe once a week?
What’s your current favorite song? I don't have any at the moment.
What are some books you’d recommend to someone? I don't think I'd be able to give any! I don't read a lot anymore.

March 2021 Reading Roundup
jan 2021 | feb 2021
quarantine reads
below the cut there be book thoughts
Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire: book 5 in the wayward children series. characters from earlier books make a reappearance i am once again begging you to read them in order
Juice Like Wounds by Seanan McGuire: tor.com short story set between books 4 and 5 of the wayward children series
#Spring Love, #Pichal Pairi by Usman Malik: tor.com short story
The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastian: book 3 of the Turners sereis, romance, sex on the page, can be read out of order
A Little Light Mischief by Cat Sebastian: novella in the turners series, set after book 3, helps to have read the others, but isn’t that important, single lesbian raising her child in secret while working for a wealthy family, falls in love with the daughter
Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett: book 14 in the discworld series, part of the witches strand of books, but technically you could read these in any order. i think it helps to start with the first book of the witches strand but thats just me, technically picks up after events of wyrd sisters and immediately after the plot of witches abroad
The Island by Ben Bender: book 1 of the comic “Beorn: The Littlest Viking Saga,” got it from kickstarter, art reminds me of calvin and hobbs, but basically this small viking child sails off to seek his fortune and finds an island
Theatre of Cruelty by Terry Pratchett: short story set in the discworld series between 14 and 15, part of the City Watch strand, free to read here
A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel: nonfiction, series of essays about books and reading and how trends around reading and writing evolved, kinda dry at times, but ultimately pretty interesting
Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford: woof okay. so. its a novella, and its very dark, theres a father and his daughter living on the edge of town and most of the townspeople are scared of them because they don’t age and seem to be magic. hard to tell what time period this is supposed to be, but there are fairly modern cars. trigger warning for blood, sexual situations, eldritch stuff, buried alive, violence, mind control? sort of; im sure somewhere else has a better list of triggers, please do your research before reading especially if youre a sensitive reader.
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: ww2 novel told from 2 perspectives, a lot of it is epistolary, follows a pilot and a spy, time jumps, warnings for nazis/the holocaust and all that goes along with those, major character death
Magic Kingdom by ExtendedPlay: volume 2 of the webcomic Stuffed, also found here on webtoons
Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh: novella, mlm relationship, the forest as a character, wood nymphs, malevolent ghosts/fae/creatures, new historian moves to town and proceeds to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong and mess up local hermits life (all of that is a major oversimplification but it amuses me sooooo), book 1 in a duology
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward: novel following 3 narrators, a mother, her son, and the ghost of a young teenager that knew the son’s grandfather when they were both in jail, i would call this magical realism; warnings for racism, violence, murder, prison system, drug addiction, harm to children, acab, character death
Masquerade Season by ‘Pemi Aguda: tor.com short story, a young boy gains 3 spirits?? who follow him around and his mom starts trying to take advantage
A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik: book 1 in the scholomance series, dark fantasy, the characters are all magic teenagers with different specialties and trapped in a school in the void that appears to be trying to kill them, fast-paced, lots of snark, has that trope of oh i have no friends everyone hates me (except that they do have people who want to be their friend if they just looked up once in a while), felt a lot like hunger games in places; warnings for murder, death, violence, blood, teenagers, dark magical creatures trying to digest you slowly over decades (and other horrible things), very buffy vibes of “oh my town is a hellmouth”
The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemisin: book 3 in the broken earth trilogy. holy cow this series is amazing please read them in order, awesome worldbuilding, she definitely desrved the 3 hugos she won for each of these books; warnings for violence, major character death, body horror, mind control, the planet as a malevolent character bent on wiping out humanity, harm to children/teenagers, murder
Across the Grass Green Fields by Seanan McGuire: book 6 in the wayward children series, this one i think you only need to have read the first one before this, novella, portal fantasy, the world the protagonist enters is populated entirely by talking creatures except for a single human “hero” that stumbles into their midst once a generation or so, as always with seanan mcguire, all is not as it seems; warnings for harm to children, kidnapping, violence

I was going through my first outline for HFoG and wow that is some wild shit. It was so different! For fun I thought I’d share some of it so you can see where it veered dramatically off course.
The first couple of chapters are the same, the first differences really start in March.
March (Yr 1) - Two weeks later in mid-March is first race - Did you declare the oil?/Of course I did, gods, Jaime, I know what I'm doing. /I saw you studying the regs again.; pit stop argument, etc.; Early pit stop, Jaime thinks they're too slow, is watching the racers pacing him, zooms off a bit too soon and Brienne is FURIOUS with him for putting them in danger, they have a huge fight and it's the first time he backs off a little and apologizes. She says 'if you do it again, I'm done.' I promise I won't. 'There has to be trust, Lannister.' 'Jaime's shorter, you know. You'd save a whole syllable. Could be critical in the pit.' She rolls her eyes. 'Fine. Jaime.'; Brienne in response makes Jaime learn how to stop exactly where he needs to; she stands in front, knowing he'll hit her if she doesn't trust him. I'll be the front jack. He makes a comment and she's like “this is serious, Jaime.” He swallows and nods by her use of his name. “Okay then. Let's practice.” He's still wounded from his team betraying him, he doesn't trust them, but he trusts Brienne. (This is all between the preseason and first race)
(Ed. note:That thing about the syllables shows up in the wedding night sex as my own personal shoutout TO MYSELF because I always loved that line and it never made it into the fic in the end and I’m an enormous dork.)
May (Yr 1) – Bronn places dye in Jaime's gloves so when he shakes hands they're blue (but Jaime laughs, he's the happiest he's been in years, he's driving loose and confident and reckless but he's winning for now); Martyn's payment comes due & almost fucks up Brienne (he's on tire duty, he is slow on the pneumatic during a practice and asks for her help and she comes over and he releases it as she's going for it and it almost breaks her wrist. It's obvious he did it purposefully and the crew swarms him, Bronn goes to get Jaime, who comes back FURIOUS and fires him; Arya joins the crew (Willem cleans up his act)
(Ed. note: I forgot Arya was supposed to join in year one. Hah.)
June has most of what ended up being in July, and July has most of what ended up being in June. Then:
August (Yr 1) – Two weeks in he shows up, middle of a hot, lazy summer; they have a great time; he drives the F1, they grow closer
(Ed. note: No sexytimes at all on Tarth. No sexytimes at all until the second year, which is one of the best changes I made.)
September (Yr 1) – Wins a race, shirt off, spray w/champagne; they kiss first time before crash ('for good luck' he says; realized he felt like he always did at the start of a race day, blood pulsing with the need for action and the roar and vibration of the engine under him); BEFORE he loses his hand, he's about ready to have sex with her on top of the car but he's got his celibacy thing and he's like “after the race”) and then he crashes the next day so their first time takes awhile. (He's glad she didn't know what he was like with two hands, he's worried he couldn't compete with that Jaime.); crash happens at Griffin's Roost end of Sept. (he hit Red before that for talking shit about Brienne; does Vargo Hoat cause the crash (Martyn gave him secret access to the info & the building w/Connington's help - oh snap)); she's watching, he takes the corner too fast and then in the second between watching live and turning to the screen, his car is flipping. She sees his car and her brother's car superimposed on each other, when she'd snuck out to see it at the impound after.
(Ed. note: The original reason they don’t get together in the first year was because Jaime had a celibacy vow during the race season that he kept as sort of a ‘good luck’ thing, which I’m super glad I dropped. Not my finest plot device. 😂)
Oct  (Yr 1)– Brienne convinces Selwyn to start a team and signs Jaime based on Brienne's belief in him; She ends up driving him fast to get that feeling back. But he's a complete disaster, drinks too much and makes a fool of himself, cruel as a defense mechanism, obsessed w/Brienne but doesn't want to bring her down
(Ed. note: This was a period of time where the Arctic Monkeys’ “Do You Wanna Know” was influencing everything I was writing and I wanted him to be very sweaty and wrecked and this is also a thing I’m glad I dropped. Brynn and I actually talked about this a lot - whether Jaime being cruel to her after they’ve started getting together would be a dealbreaker; at one point he was so mean to her she just left for Tarth and that kickstarted him into wanting to get his act together, but a lot changed and so did that, thankfully)
Nov (Yr 1) – Brienne tells him the news after the World Championship when he's super down on himself and that she will be his race engineer and have Bronn as his chief mechanic because she blames herself for not paying attention (which she doesn't reveal until later); and Pod and Arya and most of the crew; she says no December break, you have to work for it. “Why?” he asks. He starts rehab. They start fixing up Selwyn's F1.
(Ed. note: Oh I forgot she surprised him with the news they were starting a racing team for him. Hah. Wow this version was SO DIFFERENT.)
Dec (Yr 1) – She surprises him by bringing in Arthur Dayne to motivate him; they get FIA to agree that he can have a modified steering wheel. Jaime has conversation with Selwyn – you have more money than you  let on. 'I wanted Brienne to have a simple life.' 'Then why did you let her come with me?' 'Because you were the only one who didn't look at her like she was a freak.' Jaime is- OOF.
(Ed. note: I knew I wanted Arthur Dayne to show up, but he was playing a more active mentoring role in this version, and then once I really started getting into Jaime being left hanging alone with the ‘Kingslayer’ stuff, I was pissed at Arthur and realized it wasn’t okay for him to just show up. Heh. Also - that line is actually in the final version of HFoG, so some things do stay!)
Jan (Yr 2) – (they don't have NEARLY as much money as with Lannister Corp – look at this for ideas of how that will play out: https://us.motorsport.com/f1/news/tales-former-f1-chief-mechanic-952404/3045945/)
(Ed. Note: I did end up using a TON of the reading and research that I did throughout the story, even in the final version. Races were especially helpful for me to see the wild things that COULD happen - like Brienne coming in to pit with two flat tires. However, the Evenstar team having a much smaller budget never came in to play as much as I thought when I first started. There were some hints of it - their meager ‘cafe’ in the paddock, only having one wing at the end, not having all the extra parts teams normally would, but that article is actually pretty interesting for other ways the really shoestring budget teams have to cope. The LanCo LST was really helpful for me to get around the reality that having a car that can compete at the top level requires an absurd amount of money.)
Feb (Yr 2) - Oberyn Martell had won instead, his first championship ever, and he had not seemed happy when he took the trophy. Brienne had been touched when he'd dedicated it to Aerys and he'd had the trophy sent to Aerys' family; Rumor hinted they'd melted it down and sent that to Jaime Lannister with a note calling him 'Kingslayer,' but it seemed so medieval and cruel Brienne couldn't believe it.
(Ed. Note: Oh geeze I totally forgot about this subplot! There was a whole thing where the Targaryen’s HAD done that and Jaime held onto the trophy as sort of a self-flagellation and then he ends up throwing it away before he proposes to Brienne. Hah.)
Mar (Yr 2) – how he loses one race: https://www.dw.com/en/f1-sebastian-vettel-loses-his-cool-as-lewis-hamilton-wins-canadian-grand-prix/a-49120669
Apr (Yr 2) – he gets really frustrated and shoves all the tools off the table; “I'm not cleaning that up,” she said and walked out on him.
(Ed. note: Honestly a little sad I never kept this scene in some form. It could have been good.)
Jul (Yr 2) - (He puts the old-school lollipop sign in her hand. You tell me when you're ready.)
(Ed. note: this would have been ~symbolic~ because the lollipop signs were what the pit crew used to use to stop a driver in the pit lane and then released him back on the track, but it would have taken too much to explain and it never felt worth it.)
Aug (Yr 2) – She says he needs the rest; he wants to be with her; they have sex; she admits she's been reluctant she didn't want to curse him and he thought she just wasn't interested though he adored her. He says “you're the best luck I ever had.” They finally get together for good.
(Ed. note: I held onto that “best luck I ever had” line for far, far longer than it deserved. I mean it almost showed up in the actual proposal scene and luck had ceased to be a thematic thing between them.)
Oct (Yr 2) – He shows her the interview from their first week – this moment, and he paused right after her story, when he'd stared at her with what she recognized now as adoration; this, he said, is when I first fell in love with you. (That's how he tells her he loves her.); Bronn gets sick, she has to be Chief Mechanic again, she's terrified about Jaime crashing but she works a couple of races and everything is okay. Bronn comes back.
(Ed. note: So - this was going to be Brienne’s big emotional subplot in addition to the relationship. Her being Chief Mechanic again after she was his mechanic during his crash. That was why I ended up changing everything, because it wasn’t enough.)
Nov (Yr 2) – he wins the World Championship; they get fastest pit time record; they find each other in the crowd, Jaime pushing through the media scrum and other racers and everyone and he sees her tall and blonde and tears in her eyes and they find each other and hug and kiss and he doesn't care.
(Ed. note: He had been the more reticent one which was absurd. So many good changes from this version.)
January (again) - He retires to work with her and Selwyn on Tarth; they start a racing school with a focus on underprivileged and disabled kids, as well as girls; Brienne keeps getting calls to be a mechanic for another team (will she?? No, she loves being home mentoring girls interested in being mechanics)
(Ed. note: The karting school was there from the beginning!! But again I didn’t really understand Brienne in this initial outline, and I’m so glad I spent the time thinking more about her and what she wanted. I think the balance between them really worked to give the story so much more depth.)

Originals will be for sale, Nov 15
Two are spoken for.
All the local galleries are full of artists that they were showing last year, my kickstarter to get full scale prints made did not get funded (really bad timing). DETAILS
the change in scenery wasn’t unwelcomed, but it did take sungjoon a little longer than expected –– to settle in, to knock apart old habits. his mother spoke words of promises, of a fresh and better beginning, and this was what he would remember. his stepfather was a nice man albeit a tad withdrawn from personal relations.
he was (barely) remembered as the reticent kid through high school, always seated alone at the back of every class. they were his only friends, only companions that made tedious days tolerable.
graduation, military service and college –– distance was inevitable and contact was at the minimal, with everyone moving onto different trajectories, and him moving to another country.
art school wasn’t unexpected, considering his forte for sieving through the seemingly mundane and common for something that had potential to be the next trend-setter. grades and (what little of his then) portfolio worked in his favour to land him in a prestigious school in london.
the competitiveness within the curriculum unearthed him, yanking old habits by the roots and planting unfamiliarities. gone was the boy who’d always been meek and hesitant with speaking his mind, and in its place was someone unforgiving, ruthless, and with a tendency to burn through his short temper fuse.
the internship with vogue in his last year of college kickstarted his career with an offer upon graduation. and he’d soon come to realize that there was absolutely no space for contemplation, any moment of soft-heartedness could have him thrown under the bus instead.
moving onto grazia was by choice –– surviving in and adapting to new environments were never really much of a problem. moving back to korea, though, was by chance. sooyoung’s untimely death had shaken him to the core, so much so that what was meant to be a brief trip back for the funeral ended up as a prolonged stay.
wanting to pick up where she’d left off, accomplish what she’d planned to, he accepted an offer shortly after and began work as a production manager in one of south korea’s most prestigious fashion publication, COMPLEX. three years later he was promoted as the creative director and had been in the position since. life was what he’d begun to know it to be: tedious routines and grooves, working in tandem as gears in a cut-throat industry.
things appeared to be on track, right up till his ill-fated meeting with nara. for all thirty-two years of his life, he’d never met someone who’d grated his nerves in all the wrong ways possible. with his stepfather’s career switch from a businessman to running a campaign for the office, everyone remotely related to him was trapped under a microscope.
the marriage wasn’t so much romance than it was terms and conditions marked out in black and white, and all of a sudden words of congratulations had never appeared this dreary and meaningless.
( I. ) LESSON ONE: two beginnings.
the redacted: shabby walls, air heavy and congested, burnt out cigarette stubs hidden in every nook and cranny of the apartment –– responsible for the residual and suffocating scent of smoke, empty cans stacked in a corner with no order whatsoever, cold and clammy hands that brushed against his albeit rarely, deadweight like winter was trapped within, hushed whispers that were probably not meant to be heard (he couldn’t understand what they were talking about anyway), sullen eyes holding more than he could comprehend. the replacement: a fresh coat of paint, polished jade and wood embellishing shelves, their voices echoed within spaces (too much of it), unfamiliar hands with a different kind of warmth, tranquility like fresh spring — promising albeit a tad distant, sense of normalcy reconstructed and years of childhood redefined.
( II. ) LESSON TWO: blessing in disguise
––– in a year’s time, he’d forgotten how his father looked. in two years’ time, he’d forgotten the warmth of his father’s hand, how the rough creases used to rub his palms and cheeks as though in unspoken apologies. –––
his stepfather was very much a nice man, just a tad too withdrawn from anything too close to heart. having been sloughing through years of business management and socialising on a corporate basis, he had simply never gotten out of playing the ideal businessman role enough to indulge and engage in the ways of a father. joon liked him –– the man had his heart in the right places but had never lifted the barriers of his work enough for joon to be completely comfortable with him.
nonetheless, the simplicity of things sat well with sungjoon; he reckoned this could’ve ended up much worse.
( III. ) LESSON THREE: patterns
“c’mon, i promise i’ll stop asking if you come with us once, just once, please? they’re nice, i promise, hm?”
high school was characterised simply with the same routine of: books, exams, late nights, and repeat. he was (barely) remembered and spoken of, always the same reticent kid seated in the same corner of the library and always alone. they were (she was) his only companions that made tedious days tolerable, only friends that filled lonesome school years with something memorable.
sooyoung was amiable, warm, outspoken, humorous and everything he wasn’t. her inherent ability to effortlessly coax him into just about everything and anything was frustrating to say the least, yet most of the time he found the results to be tolerably satisfactory and at times, rewarding.
it was one too many late nights spent in empty classrooms and the art room, the occasional chanced glances that he could’ve sworn were not wholly just coincidental. she’d never asked, but he’d always walked her home afterwards, hands in his pockets and heart remaining in his own chest, beating, beating, waiting.
***
the tool in mind worked faster than the hand, always steps ahead with what he’d attempted to translate into actuality, in which encapsulated unvoiced words. coherency and sanity were found in the simplest of sketches and varying intensity of strokes, shifting his mind into an ideal state of tranquility, in between consciousness.
it was therapeutic: the seeking and creation of patterns, seeing things neatly arranged and categorised in a way that few others could echo with. in these lands that he’d created for himself ( and occasionally for an audience ) — projected from a fraction of reality, fantasised and malleable, he learnt to find comfort in solitude.
( IV. ) LESSON FOUR: wolves without teeth
what had begun as an interest throughout his high school days had grown to become a steering force, directing him onto this trajectory that he’d adamantly embarked on despite his stepfather’s initial wishes of a business major.
college was far from home and cold, and he was alone once again.
***
trust didn’t come easy in an industry that gave little to no room for mistakes and hesitation. the ebb and flow of things rinsed out the outdated and slow, and he had to learn fast. a sticky situation with a fellow intern was resolved with the immediate termination of the other’s contract. sungjoon had justified it as such: it was the right thing to do when one’s idea was on the verge of being plagiarised, the only thing to do. perhaps he could understand where the other was coming from, but as the field expanded, it had in place this bottleneck filter that retained only the minority, the cream of the crop, and the only direction sungjoon knew was up.
––– savagery was inevitable; it was fangs kept hidden from plain sight until the right moment, always a game of waiting for the right timing, and finding the perfect opportunity to strike. –––
( V. ) LESSON FIVE: the hardest part about you leaving is that i lost all the words i had to say
in place of the usual messages, this particular one was succinct.
date: xx/xx/xx venue: xxx, seoul attire: formal suit
it hadn’t wholly sunken into his head yet, not even when he boarded the flight back to seoul. he’d been expecting to hear from her, from them, but not like that.
silence reigned in a way that it’d tuned out the mourning and the tears. words of condolences were ready on the tongue, but were never spoken –– he couldn’t. a neat little frame with a photo that was likely to be taken recently, he mused at how time had been kind of her as though she was still seventeen. for the longest time he stayed in front of it, wordlessly, knees sore and chest heavy; as though he was still seventeen, still the same boy who’d always been waiting, waiting, waiting for her to lift the silence for the both of them ( and his heart along with it ).
***
resigning from grazia for an extended stay in korea, the following months were spent in absolute agony, dwelling on the uncertainties and the could-have-beens. though if there was something he could do fairly well, it’d be to translate negativity into motivation –– wanting to pick up where she’d left off, accomplish what she’d planned to but couldn’t.
spring, 2012: he moved back to korea and officially commenced employment with complex.
( VI. ) LESSON SIX: another chapter, a different beginning
a seemingly unrelated career switch by his stepfather, had an unpredicted implication of sort on sungjoon. having a member of the family run a campaign for the office meant that everyone remotely related would be trapped under a microscope. the media and opposition were more than prepared to magnify any bit of flaws that could possibly taint the campaigns and effectively swayed the voters’ minds to their favour.
an almost hook-up, booze-fused words with the heavy, bitter taste of regret on his tongue. granted, she was one of the most stunning women he’d ever met and she tasted of cherries and rum with a tinge of honey; granted, alcohol and a lightened mood had lowered his inhibitions enough for words to run loose, unguarded, unfiltered; granted, he could’ve apologised but he refused to compromise his own standards. in his defence, he’d thought that’d be the last of it ( of her, of them ).
they were but a product to be exchanged, manipulated; chess pieces placed rather strategically such that there was meant to have two winners. it wasn’t romance as overly depicted by the media –– it was terms and conditions in black and white and a deal meant to benefit both parties.
and all of a sudden, words of congratulations had never appeared this dreary and meaningless.

Hi, any word on the inktober book? Last Kickstarter update is Jan 11 and that says the book would be off to the printer by the end of the week after that.
Please if you’re going to send me messages like this, contact me off anon so I can answer you privately. I’ve been extremely busy, as has Bryce, who does the retouching and file prep for me, and I have not had the chance to finalize the book. Since Bryce finally has free time he will be retouching the files this weekend to send the book in on Monday. I do anticipate having the books all shipped by the end of February.
I’d hope that people remember that it’s LITERALLY just me (with some help from my boyfriend) doing this and I’m doing it IN ADDITION TO and not instead of everything else I have to do, which includes roughly 10 Patreon pieces per month. Please have the decency to be patient. Receiving these kinds of messages, especially when I’m still well within my estimated date of fulfillment (Feb 2017), and especially since people who have participated in my KS before should know I am as good as my word, is incredibly stressful for me.

I Guess It's Time For A 2020 Wrap...
I don’t know about you, but I’ve kind of had my fingers in my ears going LA-LA-LA when it comes to the calendar lately. I guess some people might have reacted to 2020 by eagerly awaiting the dawn of 2021, but idk. For me, it’s been very la-la-la.
Nevertheless, it’s now basically halfway through January (WHAT?!?!?!!!!!), so I guess at least a brief 2020 overview is warranted 🙂 And, more excitingly, a look ahead to what 2021 might hold.
…Hang on, I’m going to go dig around in last January and see if I did one of these posts twelve months ago. I stumbled across the one I wrote a few years back recently, and as ever, my plans for the year ended up being laughably inaccurate.
…Okay, looks like I never did a 2019 wrap/2020 plans post? I feel like I talked about both these things here, but I must have integrated them into other posts, because I can’t see a specific post in Dec/Jan or Feb talking about it.
OH WELL. I SHALL DIG OUT MY BUSINESS PLAN INSTEAD.
Because in the spirit of having a similar laugh about how inaccurate my plans always are, I present to you What I Originally Planned To Do In 2020.
Write Define Good, approx. 30,000 words.
Write How Not To Ring The Hero’s Bell, approx. 75 – 85,000 words.
Edit & release How To Map.
Write A Stag Of Hope And Memory, approx. 70,000 words.
Write Define Love, approx. 30,000 words.
Complete 6 short stories.
Work on Moon Shot.
Release A Fox Of Storms And Starlight.
Trial review boxes.
Plus a bunch of other press related stuff, like publishing the 2020 Inklets, Liana Brooks’ Change Of Momentum, and a whole lot of updates and admin.
…Okay. Give me a second while I die laughing, then I’ll be back and we can discuss this.
There. Okay. I think I’m good. Alright, here’s the annotated list:
Write Define Good, approx. 30,000 words. (AH HA HA HA YOU NAIVE FOOL. This is book 1.5 in the Kaditeos series, following Chiara’s adventures for a bit, and IT IS NOT GOING TO BE 30,000 WORDS. I will be lucky if it clocks in under 60k, which is to say: this is not a short lil novella I can squeeze in in between projects. This IS a project, a full (if slightly short) novel. OOPS.)
Write How Not To Ring The Hero’s Bell, approx. 75 – 85,000 words. (Can’t do this until after Define Good, because DG sets up some plot strings. Oops?)
Edit & release How To Map. (Okay, yes, I did this, and this means that all the stand-alone parts of From The Ground Up are FINISHED.)
Write A Stag Of Hope And Memory, approx. 70,000 words. (…Um. Oops? In my defence, I did TRY to write this in Nov/Dec. It just… turned into a prequel for Fox Book instead of a sequel. Oops?)
Write Define Love, approx. 30,000 words. (Yeah this is in the queue after Ring The Hero’s Bell, which means that with two other Kaditeos novels and a Fox Book novel ahead of it in the queue, this one was NEVER going to be completed in 2020, past me what were you THINKING?)
Complete 6 short stories. (Okay I did well on this front. In actual fact, I wrote 25 short stories last year. Oh, wow. Twenty-five. o.O Sixteen of these are super short and are collected in It All Changes Now, and one of these ended up long enough in edits to be a stand-alone novelette – it’s Rush Job, my next release 🙂 )
Work on Moon Shot. (Yep, did this. I wrote 10,000 words in the book, woot woot.)
Release A Fox Of Storms And Starlight. (YES, HURRAH.)
Trial review boxes. (OMG these turned into the Fan Kits and they are even more awesome than I could ever have hoped for, and I am SO GRATEFUL for Kickstarter campaigns that are making these possible!!!!!!!)
Huh.
Okay.
Well, 2020 was not a trashfire, writing-wise. I wrote lots of short stories and published Trust Issues, A Fox Of Storms And Starlight, How To Map and It All Changes Now, as well as all the 2020 Inklets. Woot.
Good to know.
Oh, and How Not To Acquire A Castle was runner up for Best Book in the ACT Publishing Awards 2020! That’s pretty cool, too.
This year, I’m aiming for a slightly more sane plan (though still optimistically unrealistic, no doubt, as my annual plans always are).
This month, I need to get Bones Of The Sea complete. (Oh, this has a cover now! I shall show you next week!) This will be my Q2 release (this is the plan, anyway), and I’m hoping to launch a Kickstarter for it, complete with Fan Kit Minis, on or around Feb 1. It’s a YA outdoor adventure fantasy with carnivorous mist, magical bones, and somewhat of a quest. Yay!
After that, I really need to get Moon Shot done, because of Promises To Children. It’s at 10k out of a planned 50, but I think I might end up chucking most of what I have and starting over, because I did a lot of refining of the worldbuilding for Rush Job, which is set in the same universe (though centuries in the future). The good thing about that though is that now I know exactly what I’m aiming for, so the writing should progress more smoothly.
Then I really need to tackle A Stag Of Hope And Memory for realsies. Storm Foxes is planning to be a duology at the moment, so Stag Book will wrap the events up. Hopefully. In theory. *side-eyes the prequel novella that appeared last time I tried to write Stag Book*.
Then, actually and again for realsies, Define Good, because I need to get back to Kaditeos. There are five books in the main story arc, three for Mercury and two for Chiara. In theory you should be able to read the Mercury and Chiara books independently, so Chiara might seem like the beginning of a new series in that world, BUT it DOES set things up for Mercury #2, so I want to have that clearly sorted in my mind before moving on the Mercury #2 (How Not To Ring The Hero’s Bell).
Assuming that that all goes according to plan (stop, stop laughing, just stop), I’d also like to do a huge massive edit of Aphelion, a sci fi novella also set in the Witch Blue universe like Rush Job and Moon Shot. It is, in fact, set on the same space station as Rush Job! The draft has been malingering since 2015, and I’m keen to boot it out the door to finished adulthood.
As well as that, I have 13 short stories to write because of more Promises To Children, plus another 5 articles for Aurealis. (My article on the history and symbolism of vampires was just turned in this week, and it’ll be out in the February issue of Aurealis, yay!)
And, if everything goes vveerrrryyyyy smoothly, there’s also a sneaky lil Christmas paranormal romance I’m dying to write. But that’s my reward for finishing all my actual commitments first, so who knows if I’ll get to it. We’ll all have to wait and see.
ALSO there will be Fan Kits/Fan Kit Minis for Dreaming Of Forests, Bones Of The Sea, A Stag Of Hope And Memory, A Moment Of Roses And Sunshine, and maybe also Moon Shot if I get the book done in a timely fashion 🙂
So that’s about it! Not a bad writing year last year (and certainly significantly better than the personal trashfire that was 2019), and hopefully an even better one again this year as my health continues to mostly improve. (*stabs insomnia in the guts*)
Tune in next week for a sneaky cover reveal of Bones Of The Sea, and let me know if there’s anything you’re dying for me to hurry up and write! 😀 (Also, sign up to my mailing list that I attempt to send out every second month if you want new release info and special subscriber discounts.)
PS Oh look, I found my 2020 planning posts here, in February and March!

Celtfather Monthly: January 2020 News and 2020 Goals
It's a brand new year. Compiling stats to watch my growth each month is a little time consuming. But it is also pretty fantastic for plotting statistical growth. I know exactly where I was this time last year.
I’m gonna start the show with the usual updates. Then I’ll go into stats and finish up with goals for 2020.
1:53 - PODCASTS
I published a bonus episode of the Pub Songs Podcast to 2019. I shared my love of the new Frozen 2 movie. The next couple of episodes I’m gonna share thoughts about my next album, Selcouth, as well as talk about individual songs on the album. I think February will move towards promoting St Patrick's Day featuring some top 5 and 10s.
I don’t have any specific Stories from the Road episodes planned. But I hope to get ahead when I get a full work day next week.
The first episode of the 2020 season of the  Irish & Celtic Music Podcast kicks off next week. I took a much needed break. You can still expect more features of women in the upcoming year. I also want to draw attention to our environment, something close to the heart of the Celts.
The Celtic Christmas Podcast released three episodes last year. I'm already planning to launch an early fundraiser for the show in 2020.
Mikey Mason and I recorded an episode of In the ‘Verse back in December. We did not release it because with the holiday, I think we both had trouble making time to write a song. But I finally sat down with my song.
The episode we wrote songs for was "War Stories". It's one of my favorites. I had trouble writing a song for the episode though. But right before we left for Christmas vacation, I wrote "My Man". It's from the perspective of Zoe, and wow, I love it. It kinda helped me understand Wash better than ever. Hopefully, we'll release it soon.
I'll see Andrew McKee at Georgia Filk next weekend. I suspect we will record a Brobdingnagian Bards podcast while we're together. We also have some videos we need to record together to complete our Kickstarter rewards.
4:20 - VIDEOS
Season 5 of Coffee with the Celtfather begins on January 8. The show will continue at 10:30 AM Eastern on Wednesday. However, It will be exclusively available on Facebook.
I made quite a few updates to my YouTube channel. In particular, I deleted many of my most-successful videos. That's because they were episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast... and they were blocked by Facebook. It seems Facebook will only keep podcasts up if it's not primarily a music show.
I'm still debating whether I want to keep episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast up there. I talk in a lot of those so many of those aren't getting blocked. But I think I might just rework the entire channel into a Marc Gunn music channel.
It's wild looking at the most-popular videos now that all the Celtic podcast videos are gone. Bizarre!
My top video is a review of my portable amp. Then comes a "Whiskey in the Jar" video featuring the Bedlam Bards. "Danny Boy for Cat Lovers" is after that. Then just a recording of my version of "Whiskey in the Jar" with just the album cover. And #5 is Funny Irish Pub Songs, a live video I made.
Wild! The channel will see a big change in the days to come.
7:07 - MERCH
I posted a Gunn Runners Card on Patreon. This card gives Heroic Gunn Runners on Patreon a 25% discount on all merch in my store and at shows.
Seems like a lot of Gunn Runners are happy to pay full price to support my music. I am very grateful to all of you. But if you need or want the discount. It's there for you.
Selcouth is the name of my next album. The Kickstarter officially launches on January 27 and goes through February 14. I still have a TON of videos and text to write for this Kickstarter. Heck! I still don't have an album cover. So stay tuned.
Oh! And make sure you subscribe to my mailing list if you're not already. I will let you know when it goes live.
In the middle of that, the Brobdingnagian Bards officially release I Will Not Sing Along, our 10th studio album on February 2, 2020--GROUNDHOG DAY!
9:00 - TRAVEL
I still have space for my Celtic Invasion of Venice. You can listen to the Celtic Invasion Vacations itinerary. To find out how amazing this trip will be. Email me if you have questions. The deadline to sign up is February 15.
9:51 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR JANUARY

How to launch an independent magazine, by Delayed Gratification
February 22 2018
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-to-launch-an-independent-magazine-22nd-february-2018-tickets-40937174190?aff=es2
In this class you will:
-Learn how to turn your magazine idea into reality
-Find out how to identify a successful editorial niche
-Understand the nuts and bolts of commissioning writers and designers
-See how to pull together a winning subscription, distribution and marketing plan
-Discover how to survive and thrive beyond the first year
You will leave with a good insight into the independent publishing industry and a strong idea of how to set about launching an independent magazine.
Thoughts: I actually found this event on eventbrite a few months before it happened, sent it to my friend who I knew would be interested (hi Ayesha!) and then forgot about it. Then the day before, she asks if I want to go because her friend cancelled so she had an extra ticket, so I ended up going with her haha. I’ve always been vaguely interested in starting a magazine, and was actually the co-editor of an online art magazine aaaages ago with my online friend (hi Angela!), but was never really serious about it. While some of this information was not new for me (a lot of it overlapped with your typical entrepreneurship/startup advice, ie. finding a niche), the advice that was specific to launching indie magazines (logistics and business aspects) was very useful and interesting, and I really appreciated the numbers they threw in from their own business. Overall, was a very fun and honest look at the business, and the organisers were super friendly. Also left with a free copy of Delayed Gratification (their mag), which was cool to read.
  EDITED NOTES
 Introduction
Met early 20s in dubai, journalism students, working as time out editors, learnt how to make print mags together / fell in love with it
Went in different directions, and then all ended up back in london at 30
Just over 7 years now
Named independent magazine editors of the year 2017
Most independent magazines are losing if not hemorrhaging money - lots of vanity projects, made as a shop front for creative agencies.
Attrition rate is extraordinary. Intense desire to make them, but the number that make it past issue 2 / 3 is very low.
Lower barriers to entry than ever before - people are used to them, a lot more need for them (solace in print from digital world) + tools are there + there are all these places to sell them now (mag culture!)
Bad news: will probably break your heart, high failure rate, odds are against you, difficult economic model to make work, are not immune to pressures in mainstream press (but don’t face: massive debt built up in 80s/90s for rapid expansion, pensions liabilities, offices)
Were dreamers + journalists: novices at nuts and bolts of making money/funding
90% of success is turning up - determination to keep going even in early years
Maybe expand into documentaries / books in the future
Key lessons
1) you probably shouldn’t launch an independent magazine - sink which you pour your money, dreams, hopes
Brainstorm: Why do indie mags fail?
Not thinking about how you pay for issue 2 → run out of cash v quickly (where frequency comes into it, ie. weekly)
Just getting visibility: Hard to find your audience - with so much competition, etc
Often have expertise in one area, but lack expertise in another function that’s vital to bringing product to market
Content burn out, esp. If you make big commitments (launch with huge interview etc) - second album syndrome? Not to create too many structures that need to be filled in early days.
2) ^ can be overcome with a niche - you need a niche
Fat brad magazine
Terrible people magazine
Slightly foxed, nutmeg (scottish football periodical), mc1r (only about redheads)
Their niche: slow journalism, something to champion
What it did for them:
issue 1 cover was by obama’s hope poster artist (+ issue 5, limited edition posters, interview = all for free)
Content by Interviews (henry kissinger, etc) + writers - because it resonated with them, wanted to support it = can use those people’s credibility to add to theirs
Coverage + press: something to talk about (today program on radio 4: one 6 minute interview got them ~400 subscriptions = able to be condensed and easily explained/summed up)
Could have been slightly more bullish about fast news in the start, should you be worried about alienation??
Brainstorm: A name and niche
Colors magazine - activism & protest issue
Trend (mindfulness) vs Niche
Helps to sort of person we appeal to, what need am i filling that hasn’t been filled, what is my spin
Need to be passionate (committed, reason without a doubt), not egotistical, believe in your idea, ask for help a lot, honest
3) you need to think about the business
Beyond issue 1, what it is to run a magazine business (VAT returns, subscription systems, fb ads)
Frequency & cost
Weekly or monthly is really really fast. Always easier to go from quarterly down, because it shows you’re getting better, etc (awks if you have to go the other way).
Issue 1: 12 pounds, issue 2: 10 pounds.
When setting price for individual issue, what would you charge for a year’s subscriptions? You want to offer subscribers an appealing discount (that you’re not losing on each subscription)
Christmas is key for the indie mag industry - big burst of subscriptions as gifts. So don’t launch in jan or feb lol, christmas run is key, be well established for this! 50+% this year was from last 5 weeks of sales
Don’t launch in summer - nobody gets subscriptions then, more newstands then
Print, digital, or both?
People don’t want to pay for digital issues, not that captivated by complicated stuff you can do on there.
You have to charge VAT + pay percentage to platform for digital copies
People expect to pay less for digital copies
But there are some digital projects that are fascinating - de correspondent (similar premise, crowdfunded, purely digital in dutch, really collaborative / self contained digital ecosystem. / community driven)
Physicality - You can get people to pay for a physical / tangible object that they just don’t for digital, they have relationships with them.
Latterly (weekly newsletter, after building huge online audience for free, now printed publication)
^ merits of this?? Passion project more bc of time sink??
Subscriptions vs newsstand
Subscription systems
Gocardless (pay direct debits)
Chargebee - portal
V difficult to make money out of newsstand sales - 50% of the cover price, 3-6 months after mags are sold, and they generally only sell 60% of the ones you’ve sent them. Treated as marketing for subscriptions.
Not difficult to set them up
In London / UK: Ra&Olly, MMS, Smiths (difficult + unresponsive + dont fulfill, but have a stranglehold on mags in country)
Paid: gold star media (get you in to salons, hotels, airport lounges, etc)
Is your magazine one that a company would like to support? Team up because they really like it
Customer
Site sales: shopify
Fulfilment: newsstand
Adjust your expectations
4) take subscriptions!!
Newsstands are hard
It’s money upfront, will help with print bills, cash flow, etc
Community building
More chances for someone to like someone
Alternatives: Kickstarter, indiegogo (to test out if appetite is there)
Subscription renewals / Direct debits ?
Do not build your business model around advertising, it’s so diffused + competitive, can’t do trackability on print issues
No ads > bad ads
Corporate work - if you prove you can make mags, you can make them for other people too
Magazine as a broader way of selling your skill set
plan for issue 2/3/4 already + worst case scenarios
5) you need to make something special
Making your magazine:
Commissioning editorial content
There are a lot of really good writers out there desperate to work for you
Draw up a commissioning form - rights and responsibilities, deadlines, etc
Approach writers that you like - tell about mag & ask them to pitch OR give them a story and ask them to write it
Longer form + freedom
Always pay! You have a contract, leverage, etc
Editorial pagination * av word count * word rate = commission
First: 10p/word
Now: 25p/word
Industry average: 30p/word
Interviews / verbatim interviews: with an expert in the subject. Get it without having to pay a word rate, take what you need from it, may tighten it up for free anyway when you send it back for approval
Ask people who just brought out a book
Finding a designer - they expect a very carefully designed product
Don’t be afraid to let things evolve - keep moving/changing things around
First issue is not going to be perfect, important thing is that it exists
Look at magazines / things you like + get in touch with them
Have your favorite designer create a template (or a regular design) for you - easier for recent grads etc to follow, at a cheaper price
Design software: considerable expense
Indesign, photoshop - creative suite, expensive monthly. Worth looking at older versions (old DVDs on ebay - work with designer to save it down a version)
Pagination (80-100), size (delayed gratification is too big/wide to fit through most letterboxes, something smaller / standard sizes are better), GSM (cyclical trends), binding (perfect bound, saddle stitch / staples are much cheaper)
Costs of the last issue, excl. Wages (which has come up a huge amount, 7-8k in the beginning bc lots in house and paying less) : 23.8k pounds
West ale ?? printers company
Approach the printers
The only thing that’s going to push your price up is if its special paper they have to order 4 u
You’ll get inundated with calls once you start up
You want a printer that will work around you (missed deadlines or changes post-proof stage)
6) you need to tell people about your mag
Brainstorm: how are you going to get noticed?
Making waves - Print someone controversial, getting into mainstream press
Power of positivity vs negativity (attract passionately negative people? In emails? Lol. prepare yourself for backlash)
Collaborating with influencers / people with followings / associations that make sense / endorsement (within the niche) - genuine
Loving print means embracing digital - lots of new people come from digital content
Weekly newsletter : manageable amount of content, keep engaging (mailchimp), moving people through the marketing funnel
Events - sense of community, benefit for subscribers.
Free is not recommended. Commitment.
Indie mag community - swap inserts in different titles/issues/newsletters, nicer fit, more interest
Podcasts
Questions
Usually print about 1000 copies of issue 1
Issue 0 - proof of concept (rarely done in indie mags)
Limited run projects - must be pitched to advertisers / subscribers before hand as such (will probz break ur heart at issue 6)

New Dark Deception Artwork Looks Creepier Than Ever
It’s been a little while since we last heard of Dark Deception, the intensely creepy looking virtual reality (VR) videogame. Each time we’ve seen the title’s menacing cast of characters and devastatingly creepy monsters that are keeping us up at night, we are reminded that although we want to play this videogame, we also really don’t want to play this videogame.
Meet Dark Deception's Penny! She's very outgoing! You'll love her

Luckily for us (or unluckily, depending on your position) we’re seeing even more screenshots and artwork from Dark Deception, thanks to the developer Glowstick Entertainment posting a bunch of fresh screens on their Instagram account this morning.
There are some utterly devastating images here, the kind that will make you tape your eyelids open like a Tom & Jerry cartoon just so you can keep your sanity at night. This one, for example, of the slightly nightmarish Agatha is only a 3D model without textures by the looks of it, and yet we are sufficiently freaked out.
Don't be sad. Agatha is always happy to play with you! #darkdeception #indiedev #indiegame #steampc #ps4 #xboxone #nintendoswitch #vr #vive #horror #scarygames #agatha #wannaplay #evillittlegirls #grudge #ringu #mazerunner #reddit #screenshots

That’s not all though, this creepy image of some sort of devil chasing you through a blazing inferno manages to successfully be both unsettling and shockingly good looking. Those flames almost look real!
Another little fx test for Dark Deception. Yep, this is in game footage .

There are plenty of images that are a fair bit more mundane mind you, although even the most static and least suspicious of images manages to unsettle. This misty shot of a mansion interior, for example, certainly puts the shivers through this writer.

Sadly, Glowstick Entertainment have been unsuccessful in Kickstarting Dark Deception, yet that doesn’t seem to have dissuaded the developer, even if it has been a couple of years since we last heard from them.
Glowstick Entertainment started drip feeding us Dark Deception screenshots by posting on their Instagram back in early December, and since then have been posting more and more frequently. Hopefully this means the company are preparing for a big announcement surrounding the title, as after a few years we’ve become a little impatient.
Regardless of how long it has been though, Dark Deception certainly seems to be on its way very soon, and looks creepier and more unsettling than ever. We’ll have all of the latest news on Dark Deception, so if you really want to get spooked in VR, make sure to keep reading VRFocus. For more Dark Deception screenshots, just see below…
