Joel Miller birth chart analysis (Happy Birthday, king, sorry the universe, like, kinda hates you)

So, to start, game!Joel and show!Joel have two (slightly) different birth charts because they were born in different years and different cities. I think they were born in different cities, anyway, it's kind of unclear where show!Joel was born, but the city doesn't change the chart that much, and not with the big three. So, this will be broken down accordingly.

Speaking of the big three! That's what I'll be looking at today is Joel's sun, moon, and rising sign. Both show and game Joel have the same sun and rising signs, but different moon signs, which is interesting. Their moon signs definitely rang the most true to me, oddly enough.

We'll talk about sun and rising first, since game and show Joel have the same signs for those aspects, and then we'll talk about the moon, where they differ.

I also want to talk about their Lilith signs, which reveals darker, deeper natures.

Joel Miller's sun sign: Libra.

The sun sign represents our identity and our sense of self. Libra is an air sign (intellectual, social, usually good at communicating) and a cardinal sign (leaders, like to be in charge).

Libra is a sign of balance. They value peace, but in a way that always pits them in the middle ground, which leads to them trying to please everyone in every way. They are very sociable, innocent and approachable. They are incredibly fair. Libra men are often overly concerned with their appearance and aesthetics.

You might be saying, well, Becca that doesn't sound very much like Joel. And you'd be right, it doesn't. It doesn't sound like the Joel we know in the game or the show. We have to look at other aspects of his chart to find out what about this actually makes Joel himself.

Game!Joel as a Libra in conjunction with other traits:

Joel's Saturn is in Libra as well, which means he rarely takes uneducated risks and accepts responsibility naturally and easily. He's grounded and levelheaded and responsible. He's loyal to people he cares about.

Joel's Lilith is in Sagittarius and in conjunction with the Libra sun placement. He's comfortable with his darker side. It also means he's incredibly observant and clear headed.

Show!Joel as a Libra in conjunction with other traits:

Unlike game!Joel, show!Joel's Saturn is in Aries and in opposition to his Libra placement. He is cautious and strategy minded. He is self-sensoring, often thinking of what he shouldn't do, and parenting minded. Self aware and self sabotaging.

Joel is also in opposition to his Cancer moon. It makes him strong willed but sensitive. He feels a constant pull between wants and needs. This means sometimes his public and private personalities differ.

Joel Miller's rising sign: Sagittarius.

We won't need to break this one down into two Joels. The rising sign, or ascendant, is how you present yourself to the world. Even in conjunction with his moon and sun signs, I really don't feel this one fits Joel too well. This sign changed every few hours though, and since we don't have a precise time of birth for either of them, its hard to say if this one is accurate.

Looking at some of the other houses might tell us more, but those with this sign have an underlying faith in the world around them, hope, and a sprit for life. They can be restless, and feel as though they're always searching for something.

Joel Miller's moon sign: Virgo and Cancer:

Here we have to break it down, since they have two different moon signs. The moon sign represents the inner self, how you view yourself.

Game!Joel's moon in Virgo:

Joel likes to feel useful and needed. He finds security in the little things in life. For most that this would mean, buying groceries, paying bills on time, taking care of everyday tasks. For someone in the post-apocalypse, this probably looks like being able to provide for people he cares about, to make sure everyone is safe. People with this placement are content to live a 'regular' life. They do very well with routine. They do best when they have something to take care of, usually a job or a hobby, but I think for Joel this would be taking care of his family.

He is skeptical and does not have blind faith in anything. He is practical when showing affection and can be shy in love, but kind. Very self critical, but humble and calm, typically reserved.

Show!Joel's moon in Cancer:

This sign clings. He clings to his home, his things, the people he cares about. He seeks security and peace in the people he cares about, and does not like change. He is devoted and forms strong connections to his past. He dwells on hurts that other people have long ago let go.

Often feels ashamed or uncomfortable with his curiosity and need to seek out meaning. He questions constantly and feels bad for it, for challenging facts and beliefs, and that his convictions can be taken to extremes.

Show!Joel's Lilith sign in Taurus:

Has a hard time feeling fully satisfied. He is always wanting. He fears indulging those wants. When he thinks he might lose something, he can become possessive. But understanding the he is allowed to want and have is incredibly hard.

Yeehaw! Happy Birthday, Joel Miller! I love you very, very much and reading about your moon signs made me very emotional. I think one day, I'll do another one of these posts with more in depth look at some of the other houses.

As promised, here are who I think Joel might be well suited to (I was going to include sun and moon combinations but I am tired, so you're only getting sun):

I think he'd do well with any fixed signs because they're stable and determined and I feel like he'd appreciate a partner like that. Fixed signs include Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. I think he'd also do well with Earth signs, since I think he'd appreciate a grounded partner and someone that can match him and challenge him, and even direct him. Earth signs include: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.

Also, as promised, I think Joel himself is probably an Earth sign. He's stubborn but grounded, he can be patient but also inflexible. I won't say which one exactly though, I need more time with that.

how good are the mercs manners/ social cues/ just a general look at there behaviour idk man I'm bored

medic: impeccable manners if you're not expecting to leave with all your organs. only slams his lab door when excited or extremely mad but that doesn't happen often. has the vibe of a guy thats finished a video game too many times and is now just being funny but he cant bring himself to be too mean because he loves the characters

heavy: this is the nicest man on earth outside of battle. good manners. holds doors open for you even if you have to do that awkward sprit to get to the door because you're kinda far away. does the bases dishes. polite little man (hes over 6 foot 5)

spy: she thinks hes polite. he isnt. she gets away with it though because if you hung out with the rest of the mercs for too long you would also be a bit mean about everything and everyone. is not often intentionally mean though, just like annoyed

sniper: hes not looking at you in the eyes but he's autistic so he wasnt going to do that anyway now was he? dosnt really socialise but he just sort of sits nearby probably wood carving or napping. just sort of in his own bubble. nice enough to talk to though, has many stories

soldier: every single social cue has flown over his head like a damn bird. also he is the loudest man on earth, yelling goofy things and generally not thinking before he speaks, but again he's not intentionally mean, just the worlds silliest man

engie: they put the most southern hospitality in this man. makes you coffee. takes your shoes. probably cleans them too. would crush his beer cans to recycle them properly. worlds largest collector of cables and cable ties. keeps the other mercs in line when necessary. only one allowed to take the stand if the mercs ever go to court.

scout: worlds most bisexual straight fuck boy type man. he is a living contradiction. worlds oldest teenager, with the levels of self control to prove it. not just for like insulting people but someone has to make sure he doesn't climb every tree in sight of the base (theres 3)

pyro: has drawn family pictures of the mercs before and their generally very sweet. only knows 2 words in sign and they are "fuck" and "thanks". has to be stopped in joining scout on his antics. has yet to fully grasp that people's rooms are their own space and has stared at the other while their trying to sleep on a few occasions because it wanted to see them. lovely soul, weird as hell.

un-burning lion primary (unhealthy badger model) + burnt badger secondary

would it be okay to ask you to help sort me? i have no clue what i am. i took the test twice, at first i got lion-something (i don’t remember), now i got snake-bird. i’m not like, hyperfamiliar w/ the system, so i apologize in advance if i’m rambling about something unimportant, or leaving out details that would help pinpoint my type. also if i’m just completely incomprehensible. or if this is too personal? I do this because it’s interesting, and it’s fun. I think it’s good for me, and I’ve definitely helped some people. But your focus on *owing* things is... kind of interesting. I wonder if you might not have some strong ideas of authority and transaction in your life? Maybe some Badger? Just a thought. 

ever since i was little, i was very. uh. idealistic? very into social justice, very much root-for-the underdog, i even had kind of sad fantasies of being some sort of revolutionary martyr as as child, “like, man, if i could die in a way that means i’m remembered (and that my life meant something)  and sends a message, that’d be cool.” 

...honestly, I think every Idealist (especially every Lion, good lord) has had the Joan of Arc fantasy. I get it. There’s something very easy about the idea of dying for a cause you are 100% sure is correct. I remember being about 15, and being hit right between the eyes by this bit from one of my favorite books - 

“It was not the homecoming that made my sprits lift, but the fact that I still had a job to do for Ambrosius... I believe that all the time I was was half hoping that I would be asked to die for him. I was very young.” 

the reality is, i’ve dealt with quite a bit of hardship since i was little and this overfocus on the issues of society was a fun way for me to displace the anguish and rage i was feeling regarding my own personal situation. I think internally I felt really helpless to do anything, i was being dismissed, i had absolutely no one help or understand me in any meaningful way. 

Well then you’re way ahead of where I was. 

I mean you’re completely correct. You have power fantasies when you feel powerless, because you feel powerless. I even think they’re a pretty helpful and risk-free coping strategy in the moment. The first step to getting yourself out of a bad situation is imagining yourself powerful. 

even with people i held close, i didn’t really realize i could talk about what i was going through, i was kind of there to be silly and fun.

Ooooh. Stuck in a ‘bit.’ This could be some Actor Bird, but I don’t know. Something about the way it’s phrased is making me think Badger. “I was there to be silly and fun” = my purpose [to the group] was to be silly and fun [and I am only my purpose.] Have we got an Invisible Badger secondary? 

when it comes to causes, it eventually struck me that i wasn’t fueled by any real feeling of “purpose”, i was just plain old sad and projected it onto literally ~anyone~ who was also sad because i thought focusing on myself is bad. 

Well. Congratulations on working though it. You must have done some serious work, to be able to lay it out this well and this succinctly. I am very aware of this coping strategy - focus on other people, all day everyday. That way 1) you get to feel good about yourself 2) you have an easy way to make other people back of your case 3) you don’t have to think about or deal with your own issues.  

Younger you sounds so Lion, and older you seems to have latched onto some pretty toxic Badger Primary talking points. I think this might be a Burned Lion story. You lost your “feeling of purpose” and latched on to a set of external beliefs that are being branded as “good.” 

and when i tried to put action to my beliefs, i wouldn’t like, measure my rage and my actions to be within the bounds of that same “right and wrong” i was otherwise so concerned with; i learnt through some pretty tough experiences that there are people who are beyond reasoning, so i’d fight fire with fire all the damn time, and that made sense to me -

Hmm. Out of control Lion secondary? Something beneath a “silly and fun” model that is just clawing its way out? Or were you just living in a loud (slightly exploded) Lion primary? 

but a lot of people reacted as if i was out of control, even people within the communities i identified so strongly, that i was under the impression would understand why and what i’m doing. that, uh, hurt, although i understood where they were coming from and would adjust my behavior.

So your communities (that you thought would understand you) actually thought you went too far, and freaked out. This is going to hurt no matter who you are, but this focus on communities, and correctly gauging vs incorrectly gauging the community is saying Badger to me. And since it’s about problem solving, it’s saying more Badger secondary.. 

To further illustrate my Savior Complex, i’d often find myself in friendships and relationships with people I felt were not treated correctly. it wasn’t built just on pity, i didn’t necessarily force friendships with people i just didn’t mesh with, but having been through A Lot, I felt like I could only connect with other people who been through A Lot. 

I would normally connect the term “Savior Complex” to a Lion primary, but the way you’re talking about it here actually feels more Badger. The focus on “fairness,” the need-basing, this way of dividing the world into ‘people who’ve been though it’ and ‘people who haven’t’ is kinda Badger. I’m thinking this might be what ever system you latched onto when your Lion Burned... because it doesn’t sound good for you, or like it made you very happy. 

One of them was the straw that broke the camel’s back though and really made me reevaluate what the hell am I doing. I was deeply scrutinized while i continuously gave myself away for this person. if i tried to set a boundary or question anything, i’d have the script turned around on me, and because i would pride myself on being so open minded, i’d really let whatever they accused me of doing live in my head rent free. 

Ouch, yeah that’s a Badger secondary. That’s *exactly* how a Badger secondary gets taken advantage of. You want to help, because that’s what Badgers do (and struggle with boundaries, because that’s what Badger’s do.) And this is a very chilling description of how Courtier Badger mirroring, which can be so joyful and wonderful... can also flip around and hurt you. Because if you reflect what people want to see back to them, by internalizing it... yeah. You can end up with all kinds of gunk that another secondary might have just disregarded.

it eventually made me feel like everything is always my fault, and that i  should just keep giving more, and trying harder. it’s only when i gave so much i basically couldn’t function anymore did i leave, and i was painted as The Bad Guy.

You were a Badger secondary who was taken advantage of. 

i’m now in this weird space where i still deal a lot with guilt, but i’m trying to not engage in it. I'm really distancing myself from anything that isn’t focused on healing and improving myself, causes included. My first priority should be being happy, and comfortable, and satisfied, and safe.  

YES. Correct. Won’t be any use to anyone (or any Cause either) if you’re not those things first. 

and also realizing that sometimes doing what i think is right will make people think i’m in the wrong, and that doesn’t mean that i am, and that truths can even co-exist.  i got kind of meaner, but also take losses easier and don’t try to push things that don’t work anywyay. 

You sound healthier. And you sound healthier in a Lion primary way, more than a Badger primary way. Little more mean, little more of a loner (and cool with it), little more of “that sounds like a you problem,” “what is true for me might not be true for you.”

I'm happy to hear you've figured out some of the details of your AU! It can be super hard to figure out what direction you want to take your ideas in, especially for an AU as broad and character-filled as your own.

Spirits and spirit areas in the ori children au

(A/N: Finally I wrote this! I wanted to draw art for this, but I couldn’t really get a grip on the art. I will probably draw some art of the spirit areas, but for now have some lore!)

Since skykids have entered this new world, their way of living has changed. From traveling, reincarnation and most importantly, spirits.

Spirits

In this world, there are spirits who are 'lost', which means that they can't move on or are trapped in an object or their gravesite. It is skykids job to help these spirits move on, just like when they were in the kingdom. This is act alone is what makes skykids different from the rest of the world. No one can't communicate with spirits or actively control them unless they use some forbidden magic, but skykids can not only see spirits, but interact and see them. They are technically stand-in grim reapers, except much more friendlier and less spooky (unless they dress up spooky.)

There are two types of spirits: Grave and object spirits. Grave spirits are the ones who are the most like our original spirits. You can spot them from a mile away just standing still and not moving. They are often blurry however, as if they can't fully distinguish their form. They work relatively the same as the originals, except their memories are more vibrant and they depict their stories much more vividly. Sometimes it's the memory of their death, others can be about a vivid memory. It's a 50/50 chance. After you relived their memory, their spirit will move on, leaving the world of the living. You can learn emotes from them, but most are focused on depicting the story they want to tell rather than teaching you something.

Now an object spirit is different.

An object spirit is a spirit that is either trapped or attached to an object. They can't move on because the object is preventing them. When a skykid has found an object spirit, they can only release said spirit in the place that they have died (reasons are that the spirit can't properly tell their story in a different area). When a skykid found the area the spirit has died in or the memory takes place in, the object will have a blue glow to it and rumble a little bit. A skykid then uses their deep call to release the spirit from the object and the memory plays before them. So, skykids are often traveling the world not just for exploration, but to also release object spirits. It's common to see a skykid carrying a bag full of these object spirits. Sometimes skykids trade these objects with other traveling skykids in exchange for goods. The more interesting an object is, the more you will find willing traders just to listen to the story of the spirit.

Because skykids carry such objects, it’s most likely that some of them have great value. So it’s also not uncommon for them to get ambushed by bandits. For that reason, skykids have utilised the firework staff into a weapon where they pour enough of their light into the staff to turn the staff into a weapon. Skykids have also managed to craft spells of their own, though they are not so effective as the staff.

Paths have been created that only skykids travel. And in most cases skykids travel by flight to avoid these attacks.

Spirit areas

Spirit areas is just a fancy name the people of the kingdoms call social areas. Skykids seem to have a very special type of power that seem to change the environment around them if they stay at a place for long enough. When one skykid stay at a place for long enough, their light pours out into the world around them. The plant life around them grows exceptionally well. Farmers are often happy when a skykid stays in a village for sometime, as their harvest will always be bountiful because of their light. 

However, if too many skykids stay in a place for too long, a 'sprit area' will start to form. These are places where gateways to the afterlife is opened and those who are not skykids will lose themselves and get drag to the afterlife unless they carry some ancient magic with them, is involved with spirits or are guided by skykids. Skykids are often found at these places, they're sort of safe havens for them, as intruders often get lost in these places. It’s difficult to find spirit areas too, as you need to have a great sense of magic to track them down.

Although each spirit area is different from their environments, they do share similar features. These places often bend reality, floating islands, trees and flowers that are not of this world and statues and ruins that are painted in patterns and pictures that only skykids know. The clouds swirl and the sky is coloured. There's a mist that surrounds the water areas and there's a distant bell tolling every now and then like a clock. (Note: One or two skykids are not enough to create spirit areas. It has to be a large group that comes and goes at an area.)

honestly, im not the biggest fan. i rarely drink (& its been that way for a while now, on average i probably drink 1nce, max 3times a year). i wont lie, i enjoy being tipsy, but prefer striving to attain the benefits of being tipsy whilst sober. i also generally dislike the taste of the alcohol itself, & most of all dislike what it does to my body.— to be fair, i started drinking quite young (12/13) & had my 'fun', if u can call it that, so those experiences probably contributed to my perception of alcohol now. — when and if i do drink its not usually at parties, more so over dinner or during conversations. picture: summertime, outdoors. friends, me & a jug or 3 of sangria. if theres no sangria, an aperol sprits. and if its winter, either mulled wine or a nice indoor vibe, blankets on the sofa & a cup of baileys👌🏽

When it comes to training grogu the parents tend to split the duty.

Bo: generally handles the skills of cooking, speech as well as reading and writing, plus some table/ social manners for good measure. (She also really enjoys reading kids books to grogu)

Din: generally handles how to fly a ship as well as navigation and mechanics of said ship. He also trains him how to use rifles/ disitigrators. He is also more religious so he handles the teaching of the way.

Both teach how to use pistols, as well as Saber and knife combat (but with grogu's size until he hits a growth sprit) they demonstrate with each other. They also had a small jet pack made that can be controlled by the parents at anytime to teach flight. On a side note if you ever mess with this guys little green baby your chances of getting stab go to "it's gonna happen, best book the hospital room now"

Question: Did religion come to imprison us or to set us free?

🍃 Brief Answer

Freedom, from the point of view of religion, can be studied under two headings: spiritual freedom and socio-political freedom. From the spiritual perspective, man’s essence or immaterial self is free from corporeality, materiality, and material characteristics. It is nostalgic of its place of origin, the realm of the Dominion and the spiritual world. But due to the attachment of his soul to the body, it is entangled with worldly and material affairs.

Man has no choice but to pursue his perfection through the means that this world affords, for this world is the cultivation field for the hereafter. However, most people tend to view the world in an independent way and are ignorant of its true value which is found in its relation to the hereafter. Hence they get caught up in frivolities and trivial pleasures and this bars them from ascending to the heights of perfection. Instead of concentrating on the essence and reality of things they are distracted and consider the sensible phenomena as ultimate reality—being utterly oblivious of the malakut (the celestial realm) and spiritual reality of things.

It is in this vein that the seekers of the material world perceive freedom as paramount to enjoying the pleasures of the world without any restraints, whereas true freedom lies in extricating oneself from the snares of lust, and it is this freedom which religion encourages. From the religious point of view, even the mighty king who is constantly expanding his empire might be a slave, a slave to his self, while it is very probable that someone living in utter poverty might have absolute sovereignty.

In conclusion: what the seekers of the material world pursue is the illusion of imaginary freedom, but that which religion encourages is real freedom.

Regarding social and political freedom, Islam neither advocates radical freedom and anarchy, nor does it compel the believer to surrender to all external circumstances and unjust powers, something that would undermine his dignity.

It can be said that individual and social freedoms do exist in Islam but with a qualification that fundamentally distinguishes them from those that are espoused by the Western worldview. For Islam is Allah-centred, and as such, ordains that man, in his intellectual discernment and application of will, refer only to Allah (awj). In the domain of moral upliftment and cultural progress, Islam exhorts the human community to establish justice and forbids its members from infringing on the rights of each other, while at the same time encouraging them to expand their knowledge and intellectual endeavours with a view to the proper application of knowledge.

🍃 Detailed Answer

Our spirit, from the point of view that it is essentially immaterial, is free from matter and body and the properties of bodies. The spirit of man has neither length, breadth, height nor depth, nor qualities such as heat, coldness, the six directions and the other attributes of bodies. The spirit is from the world of “command” (‘alam al-amr) and looks towards its own world. The beings of the realm of existence are either in the world of creation and matter or in the world of dominion (malakut), command, and immateriality.

Above the world of bodies that contains temporal and mutable things, there is another world that contains beings that are not subject to change and do not exist in time. This is the world of command that envelopes, comprehends, and rules over and above the world of creation. Both the command and the creation belong to Allah (awj) as the Noble Qur`an has indicated:

“Be aware that the creation and the

command belong to Allah, who is

High and is the Creator of the World.”1

The descent of the sprit from the world of command to the world of creation means that the human soul is in a certain sense imprisoned in the lower world (dunya). Yet, it is necessary for man to obtain his acquired perfections by means of this world and it is because of this that this world is considered the cultivation field for the next world.

Looking at this world as if it were independent and by itself keeps man away from spiritual wayfaring and journeying to the next world. It makes him forget about even the possibility of soaring free in the supernatural realms. If man persists in this myopia and grounded behaviour, he begins to think that he will be in this world forever. According to the words of Imam ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (ع), “He who looks at the world with insight, the world will give him wisdom and he who sews his eyes unto the world, the world blinds him.”2

The life of this world. Allah (awj) has described the life of the world as follows:

“Verily, the life of this world is sport and

vanity.”3

Play or sport is an action whose goal is imaginary. Vain actions are those that that make man forget others. The verse indicates the fact that the life of this world (that is the attachment of the soul to the body) busies man with himself to the point where he forgets others. The cause of this is the fact that the world deceives the soul in such a way that it makes him think that he is the body or one with the body. After being deceived in such manner, it is only natural that he becomes disconnected from the other world and forgets all of the greatness and beauty that was in the world of command. In this way, his life passes in sport and vanities. He turns to everything with imaginary and fanciful goals. When he reaches those illusionary goals, he finds nothing.

Allah (awj) says that:

“Those who disbelieve, their actions are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty person believes it to be water. When he reaches it, he does not find anything there except Allah.”4

The person who believes in the primacy of material beings turns all of his attention to sensible things and he is totally unaware of the hidden aspect of things. Such a person wastes his life in eating, drinking and play. According to the words of the Noble Qur`an, they only know the apparent aspect of the world and they are unaware of the next world.5

But the person who looks at the hidden aspect of things takes their apparent aspect as only a sign for the hidden. He considers the apparent to be a shell for the kernel that is the hidden. In no circumstance will he sacrifice the kernel for the shell. As the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (ع) has said, “The friends of Allah are the ones who look at the hidden nature of the world, while the ordinary people look at the apparent; they are concerned with the future while the people are concerned with transient things.”6

Those who seek the world surmise that freedom means having all their worldly wishes granted and having unlimited use of riches. They are not aware of the fact that in reality, if we give in to the commands of our carnal soul, we become ever more bound by the shackles of our material body. This is because the carnal soul is that aspect of the human soul that pays more attention to bodily desires and hopes to remain forever in the world.

In reality freedom means to be free from the snares of this world and our lower desires. This is the freedom that religion seeks to achieve. According to religion it is possible for someone to be the king of the world but because he is entrapped by his base desires, he is not free. How many a people exist who live in the most constricting poverty yet remain the masters of their own will. If the power of desire and anger come under the guidance of reason, then not only will they not corrupt the soul, but rather they will grow and become beneficial. True freedom is the dominion of reason (over desire and anger) in the kingdom of the soul.

According to religion, slavery is the domination of anger and desire over man. As Imam ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (ع) has said, “How many an intellect is in the captivity of its desires.”7

Again, that great personality has said, “Is there not a free man amongst you who would give this (the world) to its owner?! Know that there is no greater trade for your soul than heaven. Therefore do not sell your soul for less than that.”8

When man becomes free from his base desires, he will be successful in society and his cultural activities. As can be understood from the Noble Qur`an, man faces enemies from the outside and the inside who wish to enslave him. Freedom from these two kinds of enemies constitutes the inner and outer freedoms. Unfortunately some groups like the Sufis have overemphasized inner freedom to such an extent that they have forgotten the outer enemy i.e. the false Gods of gold and embellishment. In opposition to them, some groups have spent all their energies in fighting outer powers, seeking to gain freedom in society. They consider every limitation to be the cause of man’s slavery.

There is another group that believes that in order for man to reach perfection, felicity, and freedom, both kinds of freedom are necessary. These two freedoms are interrelated. Freedom in society is not possible without spiritual freedom.

In order for us to make an ideal and humane society it is necessary that we don’t go to extremes and obtain both types of freedoms. Therefore, in religious ideology and thought, neither is absolute freedom permissible nor are we compelled to accept all the external conditions of an unjust government. Hence in Islam there is a concept of social freedom, but it is very different from what is meant by the term in the West.

The great prophets came to construct the world but they look at the world in view of the afterlife. In this view, the present world is like a cultivation field for the next world and in which we make our afterlife with our actions. The prophets came in order to teach people how to live in order to be successful in the hereafter. Therefore, the injunctions of the prophets are for today but only so that we can obtain the hereafter.

Religion has its own views regarding economic, political, and social development. It has not relegated this matter to the intellectuals of society. The religion that claims universality and considers all human beings to share in its vision must, by its own logic, hold a comprehensive view about their development. Therefore, understanding religion is quintessential. Of course, this is very difficult.

Religion has three dimensions, one of which lies inside the soul of man. The other two lie outside him. The two that lie outside are the Qur`an and the noble progeny of the Prophet (ع). The inner dimension of religion is the power of reason and the innate nature of man; these two are called the “proofs” of religion. Something that reason clearly understands to be true also carries religious authority. Because of this religion is a combination of reason and tradition.

Because the basis of all affairs is Allah (awj), and because it is He who creates all things and the success and loss of man lies in His hands, therefore, all the aspects of man’s life should reflect His orders, whether in economics or any other field. In ethical and cultural matters Islam has invited people to justice and has forbidden people from trampling on the rights of others.

From another point of view, it has encouraged people to learn and teach others and to apply one’s knowledge correctly. There is no good ethical precept except that which religion has invited us to and has made it either obligatory or recommended to act upon it.

The religion of Islam is global. This religion says you can live peacefully with those who do not defy or deny religion. It does not prohibit to live peacefully with those who don’t want to fight you, overthrow religious governments or want to banish you from your home.9

‘Progress’ can be either good or bad. Bad progress is wasteful and lavish living. The Qur`an considers all those things to be bad. It scolds those who waste Allah’s (awj) blessings. In regards to those who only think about personal success it says,

“Some are they who only think about

themselves;10

“they eat as the cattle eat.”11

Also, the Qur`an has scolded those who hoard gold.12

“Unfortunately, miserliness has made its

home in man’s soul.”13

“Whoever frees himself from the

clutches of his own greediness is

successful.”14

Good progress is to work hard and be satisfied with little. From this point of view, if man works hard for his needs and for the needs of society, this effort can be called kawthar.

Let's Start From the Beginning Again

I did say that I would try to keep up with this post from now on. I know there are many out there who read my posts for the first time this week. And i was happy to share my intent, info and links. The fact is, I want to continue to spread my message and hope it can promote some change.

You may or not know that I taught children with emotional and social challenges for over twenty years. In that time, I experienced some seriously traumatic days, and some wonderful connections with very amazing young people.

I started to keep a diary which would later become my book, "Teaching in the Sprit." It was painfully obvious that while the public education has many positives aspects, and that most of the educators I have met have the children's best interests at heart, there is something woefully lacking.

Our education system guides kids towards higher education which will lead them to a hopefully successful career. What is doesn't do, is help them move along the path of self-awareness, discovering who they really are, instead of just promoting the common myths about life. You know the algorithm, study hard, get a higher degree, find a rewarding career, get married, have kids, eventually retire and enjoy your golden years.

Looks good on paper but how many people are truly fulfilled in life. If you look deeply, not many. Most people go through life feeling something is missing because they have never become fully human. And our education does not teach that.

Of course, our kids need the skills to make it out there, but they also should be learning more about compassion, caring, our connection with everyone and everything. They need to learn how to listen and see deeply to this amazing world around them. Many kids know these things when they are very young, but then we knock it out of them with our "big person" agenda.

Our world is in rough shape, nobody can deny this. No politicians or religious leaders, or humanitarian groups will change that. Our hope for the future lies with our children. We have to let go of the idea that our way of doing things is the only way. One look around you shows this. There is a better way to live, and we owe it to our children to pass it one to them, so that they may do the same with the future generations.
