WIP Wednesday

“It’s good to be close to an elf again. I mean, there’s Sera but she’s not interested in all the elfy camaraderie. Love her, but she keeps it at a distance.” Faron’s voice is soft in the darkness of the tent, his ever-present chatter breaking the stillness of the night. “Have you ever been close to an elf, Solas? Traveling around like you were? A real one.” He winces, “I mean a flesh one, not a spirit. Not that spirits aren’t real or anything-”

“I’ve been around elves, Faron.” Solas’ response hushes him. 

“Have you, then?” Faron rolls onto his back. “It’s nice. Feels like I’m back home; the tent, the open air, you at my side. Just missing the aravels and the halla.”

“Me at your side?” Solas seems surprised at that. It makes Faron feel sheepish. 

“Yeah, didn’t mean nothing by it. Just… falon’panelan again. Pushing back the baddies, bringing home food. It’s been a long time, it feels… nice.”

Falon’panelan, literally soldier friend, more poetically translated as brothers-in-arms in the Common tongue. The statement rings oddly in Solas’s mind. This is how the man views him? It isn’t quite wrong, but it doesn’t feel right either. His silence must have gone on too long, because Faron whispers,

“Sorry if that was weird or whatever, just feeling sappy I suppose.”

“No, it’s fine, lethallin. Just… unexpected.” He always was.

I didn't want to romance Solas at first bc of all the angst but the more I played the more I realized how fucked up the inquisitor Lavellan is even without romancing Solas. Especially in case of a mage...It feels like the game is punishing you for siding with mages and elves or being one yourself. Your companions don't like you, you lose your faith, your entire history is one big lie, you can even lose your entire clan. Both the mage rebellion and the dalish are constantly demonized. You have to listen to racist or pro templar bullshit. No one understands you except for Solas who leaves in the end. I gave his romance another try and oh god. This is like ultimate loneliness and isolation. I had no idea why would someone like Solas fall in love with a modern elf but now I know why. Because Lavellan is like the only one who can see a real person in him. In modern Thedas, he is nothing but another pair of pointy ears. An apostate. An elven hobo. During the days of ancient elves he was nothing but a title. The Dread Wolf. A symbol, not a real person. And literally the same thing can be applied to Lavellan who is being crushed by the weight of their title. Who is being devoured by the narrative until there is nothing left of them. They are so alike, damn. Inquisition companions mostly act like a group of coworkers and Solas doesn't trust even his own agents (hi Felassan). The game ridicules a player for certain opinions and Solas conditionally says he was called a liar, a fool, a madman by both his enemies and his allies alike for trying to share his knowledge. I used to think Solas romance was kinda empty and unsatisfying and holy shit how wrong I was. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Solavellan to me is about finally finding a person who understands you under the shittiest circumstances possible after accepting that you will probably die alone. And then...Being completely destroyed by your own sense of duty. With all the Solas hate in this fandom I kinda forgot he actually...Cares about Lavellan? It wasn't an easy decision to leave. And it was even harder for Solas to not let Lavellan join his cause. He had to get rid of his own humanity for the sake of other elves and he doesn't want his vhenan to do the same. And the most tragic thing about this, that there is not much humanity left of Lavellan anyway. They are tired and lost and alone. Inquisition has changed them, they can't go back and pretend that nothing happened. They are not the same person they used to be. Solas greatest fear is dying alone but in the end of the game my Lavellan felt like they are the one who is slowly dying alone.

Also Solas is bisexual to me I don`t care what bioware say.

A lil confession one-shot. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ Battle of Attrition - Dead-dove whump for whumptober. Red Templars and torture ahoy! ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ The Healer's Hands - Solas/Blackwall gay awakening and pining, ft. a little bit of hurt/comfort ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ On Broken Wings We Fly - A lil friendship fic I wrote for @rosella-writes of their Lavellan's interactions with my Inquisitor and the start of their strange friendship.

I try! I also forget and get so caught up trying to write "meaningful replies" that I tend to fall behind on them ahaha

Hhhh well it hasn't ended, but probably Battle of Attrition (since it's all just whump) or Never Say Die, a tiny thing about some of the OCxOC lead-up to the Conclave.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my writing is pretty bittersweet at best, but probably Shrike, a lil Cullen PoV fic about his and Connor's relationship.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have in the past.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Only privately, and of the heavily character focused kink variety. Trust and emotional vulnerability through physical intimacy my beloved.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Not off the top of my head, no.

Not that I'm aware, but I mostly write OCs so probably not lol

... All time? Axel x Saix, probably ahahaha for Dragon Age though I'd say my favorite romance is Iron Bull's.

I have yet to finish anything ever soooo

Banter and character voice! The transcript project mostly means I've heard and read so much character dialogue that their voices are ingrained in my skull. I'm also told that I'm pretty good at grounding things in physical sensation.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I've always really struggled with head-hopping and under-explaining, I think.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've never needed to, but it depends on the fic/language. If it's something the reader would already be familiar with like or a word or phrase, I'd write it in the language, but for longer lines or a full conversation, I would either summarize for the reader or write the conversation in italicized English.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Naruto!

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Definitely my long fic, I'm very proud of it, but I love all my writing! I write very specifically to my own tastes ahahah Though my whump fic has been so indulgent it's definitely near the top.

“Mahanon.”

The voice stops him dead in his tracks. What was he even watching? A few quick blinks and the surroundings blur, leaving one person sharp and colourful in a sea of now-monochrome crowd. 

“Solas,” he breathes, and for once he can wrestle himself from the role of a spectator in his dreams. The frozen figures of his imagination implode into dust as he stalks through them, headed towards his love. 

Soon they stand close enough to touch, but… 

“It's been a long time, Solas,” Mahanon says, his fingers squeezing into a tight fist he pockets. Fighting the urge to hug Solas, or worse yet, kiss him. 

A sad smile curls on Solas' lips. “You've been waiting for me?”

“Of course,” Mahanon scoffs, though it's not anger. Not really. “I've waited my whole life for someone like you, and then you just…”

He throws his hands in the air. Even here, under the waxy black sky, he can't say it. 

“I still remember everything. Your touch. Your voice. Your taste.” Mahanon sighs, the oft-played memories flashing in his mind as he stares in Solas’ eyes. “How could you just… forget about me?” 

Mahanon notes the way he takes a half step back, how his brows furrow. 

With a flick of Solas’ hand, their surroundings shift from deep emptiness into a field of battle. Corpses lay on the ground, cries of desperation pierce the air. The stench of burning flesh closes in like claws, but Mahanon's attention shifts back to Solas. 

“What?”

Solas blinks a couple of times, his mouth turning downwards. He shakes his head, looks up to Mahanon. 

“Do you not see?” His hand draws an arc, gesturing at the burning field. “This is why I've had to forget about you. You and I, we do not stand for the same thing.”

Mahanon's hands flex at his sides. For once, he's silent, waiting for the inevitable blow. 

“You do this,” he points at a phantom clutching a grievous wound, “because you enjoy it. You cut through—” 

“I don't enjoy it!” Mahanon growls, teeth bared. “I have to! I have no choice!” 

Solas stays silent for a moment, a finger rising to his lips. Then, quietly, “Then what is your end goal?” 

Mahanon crosses his arms on his chest, closing his eyes. That's… a good question, one he's never quite found the answer to. 

There's one thing he knows for sure. “I'm lost without you.”

“You were already lost when you were with me.” Solas’ jaw tightens, his posture stiffening. “There's nothing I can do for you.”

Everything fades to black without a warning, and when Mahanon's eyes open, it's to stare at a ceiling he knows all too well. His castle, quickly falling back to disrepair. 

The fireplace is nothing but embers at this time of night, but he shelters by its fading warmth. Reports from the warfront already in his hands as he tries to shake the nightmare. 

To think of it as anything else would be unacceptable.

Re: rarepair Hell. I would like to know how many pits we mutually occupy, so. Could I get a list of like, idk, your top ten (based in enjoyment level) rarepairs? And/or headcanons but I would prefer "and".

okay i'll assume you mean dragon age specifically MFDSKJFSDKJF but okay, i'll list some!!!!

the obvious ones:

fenders (fenris x anders) : i love a good narrative foil

zevistair (zevran x alistair) : idk if this counts as a rarepair but!!! their canon flirting banters always make me go sooo insane. that you can include zevran in the foursome w alistair if alistair is hardened (lol) makes me INSANE. they are basically canon aND YET!!!!!!

warden x loghain : ive written so much abt them already. you get the idea

nanders (nathaniel x anders)

the less obvious ones:

anders/merrill (bonus: anders/merrill/isabela): for all the same reasons i ship fenders (which i would argue is still relatively a popular pair, so not quite rarepair??); they're such good mirrors, they're both encapsulate what the other fears. anders being 100% okay to hurt people despite being a healer vs merrill being a blood mage who has never wanted to hurt anyone is just *chef kiss*. you can take a look at this for more compelling reasons to ship them.

fenris/merrill: for all the same reasons as above. i think if u dont ship each individual LI of the kirkwall polycule w each other, u shouldnt say u ship the kirkwall polycule.

solavelyan / soladaar / soladash / solas x non-lavellan inqs: i still think it should've been a romance option for all inqs tho i suppose they didn't really have the time to develop a non-lavellan route for them, but i love thinking about it, and i love the vibes for it so much. again, i love narrative foils, and i think it's so natural to be drawn to someone who could understand you like that.

alistair x bethany: a not-templar and a not-circle mage, in the wardens together. i think they'd really like each other and have a very interesting kind of energy!!! they've both got these secret bitter/spiteful sides to them, there's a lot of parallels (like alistair thinking warden conscription is a good thing bc it was for him and bethany having v different emotions abt being a warden in general). i've also really enjoyed most of the fics i've read for them.

nathaniel x f!cousland: UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH i dont think i've been able to find the kind of fic i want for them in the tag. i've got too many wips as it is, but maybe one day i'll write the nathaniel/f!cousland fic of my dreams...

nathaniel x anora: this one is admittedly @rosella-writes' fault, but they've got me by the THROAT as a concept

m!hawke/cullen: LIKE ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ONE-SIDED FOR CULLEN it's something that can be SO fascinating to explore (esp in an amell worldstate). [shaking cullen] babygirl what is WRONG with you!!!!!!!

m!hawke/sebastian: sebastian grappling with his admiration for hawke vs his chantry vows but THIS TIME make it mlm..... i think this is probably baby vee coming through w how hard i used to ship d/estiel in the early 00's LMAO. fsr they hit the same beats in my skull.

morrigan/leliana: noooo girlies don't fight haha <3 they should dump the warden and kiss instead <3

josephine/the iron bull: i read a few fics for them that admittedly captured my interest. i think their dynamic is something that could really be interesting to delve into for so many reasons. i've read the evidence and i find it compelling enough to put on this list
