In a statement published the same week as the first Melodifestivalen semi-final, more than 1000 Swedish artists ask the EBU to exclude Israel from this year's Eurovision Song Contest, including 2 acts participating in this year's edition of melfest: Jacqline, and both members of Medina. Also among the signatures are former melfest participants Johan Hirvi (Panetoz) and Alvaro Estrella, as well as former winners Eric Saade and Malena Ernman.
Some other notable signatures belong to Robyn, First Aid Kit, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Petra Marklund (also known as September), The Wannadies, Thomas Stenström, Miriam Bryant, Sabina Ddumba, Daniel Adams-Ray, Timbuktu, Kaliffa and many others whose names I recognise but I'm too unfamiliar with the contemporary music scene to know their work.
Below is my translation of some parts of their statement, as well as sources:
Note: The bold parts are also bold in the original statement. I have tried to use the same terminology as the statement, but I'm no expert, so be aware that there can be some mistakes.
The first link includes the full statement in Swedish as well as a list of all the signatures:
[...] What is happening in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster and the International Court of Justice in The Hague has recently decided to continue the case where Israel is accused of crimes against the Genocide Convention. Despite this the European radio- and TV-union the EBU intends to allow Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The EBU grounds its position on Eurovision being a competition between public service companies rather than states. But in 2022 the EBU chose to exclude Russia by reason of the invasion of Ukraine, and in 2021 the participating broadcaster from Belarus was denied participation because the country broke the EBU's rules for the freedom of the press. In barely four months about 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed, and foreign press has been denied access to Gaza. It is one of the greatest attacks on journalistic freedom in modern times. We are of the opinion that the EBU by allowing Israel's participation displays a remarkable double-standard that undermines the credibility of the organisation. [...] We expect both the EBU and this year's host broadcaster SVT to be consistent in their approach towards participating countries that infringe on democratic values and human rights.
[...] We who sign this are 1000 artists who believe in music as a unifying force. The Eurovision Song Contest began as a peace project to unite countries and citizens through music. To allow Israel's participation undermines not just the competition's spiritual intent but the entire public service mission. It also sends the signal that governments can commit war crimes without facing consequences. That is why we ask the EBU: Exclude Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Eurovision Fact #484:

All but one of the featured dancers from the "Herald of Darkness" interactive music video from the game Alan Wake II have danced in UMK, Finland's national final for Eurovision.
Dancer Katri Käpynen was also a dancer in a music video for the 2022 Finnish representatives, The Rasmus, though not for their Eurovision entry.

your post reminded me how people on here tried to gotcha on the idea that ukrainians are inherently racist because of the issue with black ukrainian people fleeing and they tried to pin it on ukraine itself when it was literally just poland who didn't want to take them
Mhm, from what I remember, the problem came from the fact that during the first days the evacuation trains were prioritising women, children, elderly and disabled over men. + Not all foreign students are fluent in ukrainian, and not all ukrainian railroad workers are fluent in english. This created a miscommunication issue, where the railroad management failed to explain the students what to do and where to go.
If you've been here, you know what kind of chaos happened during those time period. The tension was fucking high. Everyone was in the survival mode. The infrastructure wasn't prepared to a full-scale war. A lot of mistakes happened on all levels of management.
The people who were in panic and jumping to the worse conclusions (based on their lifelong experience of racism) were given the platform by russian propaganda machine; and those who understood the language a bit better and were explained the priority of saving women and children first, didn't. If you have time and inspiration to bother with translation, here is an artice from March 2022 that includes quotes from both sides of the story.
We need to admit that this event was bad. A lot of people were hurt. But it wasn't a specific campaign targeted at black people. Yet russian propagandists and their lap dogs turned it into an anti-ukrainian smear campaign.
additional rant below
It's sad how easily westerners are ready to eat up anti-ukrainian propaganda, even when it comes from people who sent their mercenaries to commit war crimes in Africa. Y'all really think russia is a reliable source to learn about racism? Really? Ukraine has a black politician, we were represented by black artists in Eurovision twice - by popular vote! - and in russia, people bully brands who use black models in their advertisement into withdrowing the ad and apologising for hurting the feelings of consumers. I know this comparison sounds pathetic, especially if you're from a country with large black population, but keep in mind that we didn't partake in the transantlantic slave trade route, and yet we still do better than russia which has thrice the population we do.
People who don't speak russian don't have a clue about how racist their society is. If you know those fringe internet guys who scream about culture war and throw tantrums about black disney mermaids - this is literally the status quo of russian culture. And THESE are the people westerners have decided to trust on their word in questions of racism?? Really?
No matter how many times we disprove those "ukrainians are racist because we didn't allow black people to evacuate burr burr" claims with facts, they still come up. The rebuttals were there immediately. Yet 2 years later, I still get lectured by usamerican tweens about how all ukrainians are racist by birthright because "i googled ukraine racism and a russia today article told me it was so"

besties i’m not gonna let this go so here’s what i know. maybe i am missing something but here we go:
during eurovision the moldovan jury announced their 12 points for ukraine and then none of the remaining points went to romania, even though their song was about romania, and even though it was massively supported by romanians everywhere. (please note that the juries gave moldova either 12 or 14 points in total and the public vote put them in 7th place in the chart)
when it came time to connect to the romanian jury, ebu said they couldn’t connect with the jury in romania so they said romania gave 12 points to ukraine and gave no further information about where the rest of the points went
this is the statement made by the public television in romania:
Romanian Television has fully assumed its commitment to participate in Eurovision 2022, paying the participation fee and preparing, together with the WRS team, a project that has enjoyed the appreciation of the public.
However, we were surprised to find that the result of the Romanian jury's vote was not taken into account in the calculation of the final ranking, the organizers assigning another set of scores to the competitors in the final, on behalf of the jury of our country. We specify that the Romanian jury decided to give maximum score to the representatives of Moldova.
source in romanian
now i have a few things to say
a) both moldova and romania would have given a high number of points to ukraine even if it wasn’t the 12 points. i am 100% sure of this.
b) by doing this, ebu has managed to paint the whole situation in a bad light because they did not have faith in ukraine winning despite having a very good song that deserved to win.
c) if you’re gonna try to fuck with the points, don’t make a country that comes to eurovision and sings about her sister country give no points to their sister country. that was shady to everyone who watched because we have always awarded each other points, but especially during this eurovision given the context of moldova’s song. that was so weird that we were all watching like... huh? not possible
shame on ebu. by doing this, you’ve completely embarrassed yourselves in a way that i don’t think can be taken back.
having said this, congrats ukraine! you guys deserved to win and i’m sure would have won regardless of ebu fucking with our votes <3
(i have the feeling they won’t let us in next year but it had to be said)

The esc results are getting more and more suspicious. Someone pointed out that the votes weren't 50/50 so I did the math as well and lo and behold! There are 58 extra points from televoting and the difference between Finalnd and Sweden is 57 points.
Here's the sheets document with sources and 2022 result count for comparison:

Last Friday Finland's electricity market was turned upside down when a Norwegian energy firm erroneously offered huge amounts of non-existent electricity on the Nordpool market.
That forced the spot price down as low as -50 cents, meaning that any consumer on a spot price contract was able to make money just by turning on their household appliances.
Happy days for the end user, but energy market participants were less than pleased.
Financial daily Kauppalehti takes a very serious look at the problem in an editorial, suggesting that the Nordic countries might need to introduce an emergency brake mechanism to flatten out peaks and troughs in energy prices in the future.
The energy price is calculated each day by Nordpool, after it takes in bids from energy producers based on what they expect to produce and matches that against the expected demand.
In other parts of Europe the market holds a 'Second auction' if the prices are too low or too high. That allows producers to offer more or less energy once they see what the price is likely to be, thereby raising or lowering it.
In the Nordics that doesn't happen, even though it was proposed in 2015. KL suggests that might be because energy producers primarily thought about the possible reductions in price it might bring when prices would otherwise be high.
They preferred to rely on market mechanisms forcing reductions in consumption, and never really considered what might happen if there was a mistake and they had to source electricity to sell at a loss — as happened on Friday.
School dinner waste reductions
Aamulehti has a look at moves by Tampere region municipalities to reduce food waste in daycare centres and schools.
This food is produced by Pirkanmaan Voimia, a company owned by several councils in the area. They had noticed that a lot of food was getting thrown away, and asked schools and daycare centres to try and reduce their orders to reflect the amounts that are actually consumed.
Institutions can assume a certain level of absences based on sickness and other issues, and getting better at predicting those means there is less food thrown away after lunch.
Since the food waste drive started in 2022 orders have reduced by some 4-8 percent, depending on the institution.
That has caused some issues as most schools allow children to serve their food themselves from the lunch counter.
When popular foods are on offer, like fish fingers or similar, food can run out, according to Tampere's head of basic education Kristiina Järvelä.
"There is a recommended portion size, but there's always someone who takes 25 meatballs even though the order is based on 5 meatballs each," says Järvelä. "There is however always backup food [in the school's kitchen], so nobody is left hungry."
It's crazy, it's rental
Helsingin Sanomat reports on a new addition to Helsinki's holiday rental scene: the studio apartment that was home to Eurovision star Käärijä before he was famous.
Located in the rough and ready northern suburb of Malmi, the flat is decked out in Käärijä's trademark green and decorated with a painting of the man himself in his iconic bolero.
The advert text even uses the artist's trademark, endearing Finglish.
"Have you ever think how I live once in Malmi? Now you can come and feel yourself how it feels. Yes Yes I know you will like," reads the description.
This unique experience does not come cheap, however: HS reports that the price for an upcoming weekend would be 764 euros per night.
Käärijä himself (real name Jere Pöyhönen) was granted a rental apartment in Vantaa free of charge for one year as a recognition of his Eurovision achievements, allowing his former home to become a city break destination.

KALUSH and Jerry Heil released a new song together!
Tumblr media
Ukrainian band KALUSH, the winner of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, and Ukrainian singer Jerry Heil (Yana Shemayeva) released a joint song called 'Стіни' on May 19, which is dedicated to Ukraine’s victory in the war against Russia.
In this song, Heil performs a verse on behalf of a young man. According to the singer, this was done to emphasize the contrast between herself and the young men fighting to defend Ukraine.
“The first performance of the chorus is puzzling: ‘I won’t return in the spring,’” she said.
“Did the guy die? But since his image is a symbol of my indomitable people in the song, there is an explanation in the second chorus: ‘I’ll come back and it will snow,’ and ‘I’ll come back as the scythes touch the stems’ in the epilogue. That is, he will stand and bring victory home in the summer, and snow will fall as a symbol of a miracle.”
Heil added that she was comfortable working with KALUSH, since she’s impressed by the group’s spirit and talent.
“We believe in an early victory for Ukraine!” said KALUSH frontman Oleh Psyuk.
“And our next song will definitely be about it. Today, we want to sing our song 'Стіни' with Jerry, which, we hope, will become the mantra of our victory by this summer.”

Favorite Songs From Each Country! Part 26/37: Greece!
Yes, we all know that Greece and Cyprus are essentially best friends, giving each other 12 points almost ever time (and then they only give Cyprus 4 points this year? Crime.). But Greece had a killer top 10 streak that went from the 2000s into the 2010s, and a qualification streak that went on for a little bit longer than that. They dominated the 2000s, even boasting one of the most iconic winners in recent Eurovision history!
Favorite Entry: We don't have to go that far back to find my favorite Greek entry. Only bouncing back a year to Amanda Tenfjord's "Die Together" from 2022. I follow a lot of Eurovision YouTube channels to learn more about Eurovision since I'm so new, and considering where I live, my sources are a little more limited. One of the channels (Mr. Eurovision if you wanna look them up) has "Get To Know" videos on some of the artists announced before National Finals, doing their best to catch up when the Eurovision rush picks up. That's where I learned about Amanda's upcoming song being a breakup ballad. I love breakup ballads (what also helped was that I was also fresh off the release of "Red (Taylor's Version)"). And when the song came out, I was not disappointed and it shot right to the top! I still love the song, despite having listened to her album and "Die Together" ranking 4th there. But I think that's a good thing, because she could have sent my top 3 off the album and still have been my winner. *Needless to say, I'll be posting the "Die Together" Spotify link that connects to the album, def give it a listen. I feel it's underrated because it came out the same night as "Midnights" and even I overshadowed it.* RANK: 8th in 2022 Grand Final/PERSONAL RANK: 1st of 40 Countries
Thoughts on 2023 Entry: So, with 2022 being my winner, that would mean that Victor Vernicos and "What They Say" would be my host entry had I been in charge of Eurovision. And I FEEL LIKE SUCH AN A-HOLE about how I feel about this song. I forgot about it. And I feel horrible because his voice is excellent (which at 16? He's got a great career ahead of him). Also, I fell upon the lyrics to the song...and it being about having anxiety? It's incredibly relatable? And not in the "haha same" way? Luckily, I've interacted with this group of people who had the same winner as I did and "What They Say" gets a lot of love over there, along with some other songs that were kind of underrated in the contest. RANK: 13th In 2023 Semi-Final 2 (30th Overall)/PERSONAL RANK: 33rd of 37 Countries

UK "considering inviting invasion to boost Eurovision chances".
Tumblr media
Ukraine won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in the aftermath of Vladimir Putin beginning an invasion of the country. However the 2023 contest will be held in Liverpool due to security concerns in Ukraine.
Sources say local organisers are now considering using the same tactic in the hope of a repeat of the result for the UK and increase their chances of winning in the upcoming contest next month.
