Species Profile: Tolveni
Colloquial Names: Ring-eyes, Radioheads, Jammers
Homeworld: Amateru
Territory: [tolveniMap.scm]
Diplomatic Status: Neutral
Threat Level: Yellow
Notes: The Tolveni are a species of hexapeds with wide, largely flat bodies and three evenly spaced arms. Their heads are located in the center of their body, rising up on a long neck and ringed with sensory organs facing every direction. As such, the Tolveni have no front or back side, able to see, move, and manipulate objects in any direction they choose.
A Tolveni's mouth is on its underside. According to their biologists, they evolved from grazing creatures, able to bend down to reach food on the ground without compromising their vision to do so.
Tolveni communicate with each other via electromagnetic radiation, using wavelengths ranging from the microwave to the visible spectrum. They have unique organs in their bodies allowing them to generate and receive these signals. Meanwhile, much of their technology operates on sound, which they have no receptors for. Signals and commands are transmitted audibly, using airtight tubes to carry and maintain sound waves over great distances.
Together, these things make it difficult for us and the Tolveni to coexist in the same spaces. The simple act of speaking wreaks havoc on their technology, and being around Tolveni tech is deafiningly outlook for us- and the reverse applies for the Tolveni as well. This created significant complications during first contact, as attempts to communicate sent both ships' systems haywire. Ultimately, physical writing was the only feasible means of communication until a solution was discovered.
Any human traveling to Tolveni space must be equipped with an implant to convert speech and other vocalizations into signals the Tolveni can understand, and any Tolveni in human space must be equipped with an implant that converts their signals to sound.

Baryonyx
The Baryonyx is the first ever fish-eating dinosaur to have been discovered, however do not be fooled, they likely ate other dinosaurs as well.
Paleontologists believed that they would sweep their claws back and forth in rivers before snatching a fish, similar to how a brown bear does. They likely didn’t stray far from lakes and rivers so as to remain near their likely main source of food.
They lived about 130 million years ago, either during the early or middle Cretaceous, which is odd for a theropod due to most of them having lived in the late Cretaceous.
The Baryonux was about 9 feet tall and 31 feet long and weighed approimately 2 tons. They had 2 undersized arms, a small crest on their snout and a crocodilian-like jaw with over 95 teeth. They have a largre claw on their first finger which was about 30 cm long.
Their name Baryonyx means “heavy claw”, and walkeri refers to the young fossil hunter William J. Waller who founded them.
They were discovered n 1983 by amateur paleontologist William Walker in the UK, however it wasn’t until 1986 that they were named and described by paleontologists Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner. It was one of the first carnivorous dinosaurs discovered in England.
They have been found in Spain, Portugal and the U.K.
They are a theropod, who is closely related to the Spinosaurus, Suchomimus, and Carcharodontosaurus. All 4 are known for their crocodilian-like snouts.

Stolluks
Name: Stolluks, AKA bine people
Origin: Imest, abandoned biological experiment
Intelligence: Sapient
Nature: Violent
Lifespan: 35 Imesian years
Physical Characteristics:
Head: Spiked and heart-shaped
Limbs: Have six limbs, two of which are used as arms while the rest are their legs. For each hand is three leaf-like fingers. From the Stolluks’ plant-inspired design, none of their limbs (hands and feet included) have any noticeable joints. Instead, they bend in a similar way to noodles.
Avg. adult height: 195cm (6′4)
Skin: Smooth and almost rubbery in texture. Skin tones range from dark to darkest complexities of greens. Faces are often a lighter shade of green or yellow.
Hair/fur: Minimal.
Eyes: Two large front-facing eyes, the sclerae are a dark colour
Reproduction: No reproductive organs. No organs for nourishig young. Interestingly, stolluks were engineered to have figures as if they were to have such organs, merely for the aesthetics of what people normally find attractive. The only way they can reproduce is to simply engineer themselves from scratch.
Abilities: All limbs can adjust theiir length at will are unresponsive to pain. When cut, they can quickly grow back, similarly to starfish and worms, but much, much faster. These abilities were engineered to be convenient when entring hostile territories.
History
Their design was inspired by the vine beasts spread across Dipuenian grasslands
They were created by genetic engineers to act as “pawns” in  the Great War Against AI
Successful ones would collect intelligence and/or eliminate/hinder enemies
After the war, they were left to live on their own
Most need to resort to living in the wilderness and slums because their species is not recognised as “true” people
Due to their short life-spans, they grew to be very aware of their mortality, so there were conflicts among them: should they fulfill their violent, thrill-seeking nature or should they live life to the fullest and avoid fighting pointless battles?

This is Larix laricina, commonly known as tamarack, hackmatack, and Eastern, red, black or American larch.
L. laricina is native to boreal and eastern temperate North America (Nature Serve), persisting right up to the northern treeline. It frequently grows in or at the edges of wetlands (swamps, fens, marshes, and riparian areas), but can tolerate a wide range of substrates and moisture. For a good overview of the species, check out this link.
It's one of those plants that can be a lightbulb moment for some people, inspiring them to reconsider basic assumptions about the way we divide up the natural world. When we learn about trees, many of us learn that there's two basic "types": deciduous trees and conifer trees. We are often told that deciduous trees are broad leaved and lose their leaves in the fall and that trees with needles don't.
Tamarack 'breaks' that; it is a deciduous conifer. Rightly, the language we are taught should be that there are deciduous and evergreen trees, that there are conifers and broad-leaf trees, and these categories can mix and match. (Of course, the trees haven't read the rules, so I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out there is a broadleaf coniferous gymnosperm--exceptions ARE the rule in ecology!)

honestly every insect or especially ANT metaphor when it comes to unknowable cosmic entities and humanity turns absurdly funny the second you know anything about insects.
like ah yes. pitiful meaningless humans in the face of cosmic terror. who nonetheless are the reason everything is the way that it is to eldritch entities and the reason to which they owe their existence, who nonetheless are some of the most irrationally feared animals to exist in contrast to their actual physical abilities, who have shaped the course of history and who will shape it evermore. animals which very suggestions to their form sends eldritch deities into a panic and utmost horror, despite how common it is, how widespread, how beloved the design is by creation.
and to add in the ant metaphor like these people have NEVER stepped in an anthill. like ants arent some of the most feared animals by every other animal in the world, like dedicated ant-eaters arent actually rather rare, like plants, even greater deciders of the shape of this world, havent befriended and built great homes for ants for the purpose of deterring every other animal which might bother them.
you know.
those insects. those ants. meaningless. helpless. worthless.

listening to octopath music and drawing and writing stuff for my octopath pmd au so The Horrors(tm) dont get me
#i am getting WAY too in depth with these character profiles but if i dont hyperfocus on it i will implode .#like. we got species (including fusions/variants) types (may differ due to species) (plus an extra type bc of mixing in octopath mechanics)#also bc they can have up to 3 types at once i calculated everyones weaknesses and resistances which is actually kinda fun w tri-typed mons#also movesets up to 9 moves including 8 from their species(es.?) and 1 from their extra type . bc octopath#and abilities which everyone can have up to 2 of bc of how the older pmd games worked#tho each start with one and gain one in a similar way to octopath which allows for more mismatching#and also making it easier to choose fitting abilities for everyone they otherwise woildnt have access to#their IQ groups (tho. i am mildly tempted to scrap that and make my own groups. no yeah thats my next task now)#held items and general/single use items theyd most likely have#and any other individual notes i have on them 👍 like therion being unable to evolve further bc part of his lineage is a 2 stage evo#ohhh i also need to note where everyone comes from. except maybe therion bc we dont know his hometown at all#thats gonna be kinda hard bc each continent has pretty much all the biomes but psmd changed that up a bit..... hm....#and the sand continent is straight up from psmd only unlike the rest so i need to check if theres anything besides deserts there#bc i could theoretically put 2 travellers per continent and go from there.. OH wait that works hold on. im a genius#maybe i need to replay psmd again and see.. i gotta be at least partway in my current playthrough it camt be too hard#id like to mimic where everyone starts out as much as i can.. tho i cant remember if theres a livable tundra area in pmd#still gotta do those iq groups tho . that goes first#octotag

do yall have any custom legendaries you can talk about?
Tumblr media
This is our custom legendary known as Pantheon, and specifically our resident Misfit! She runs the Misfit Guild, and is one of the few still living legendaries, as well as being wildly known as the source of all the rampant eevees in the world!
Her guild is known for being one that's rather safe, even the lair itself seems pretty tame for most of it's depths, and Misfit will gladly help any Mon seeking her guidance. Though, it's not entirely sunshine and rainbows- getting Too deep into the lair produces incredibly strange and rather malicious feral pokemon, and they regularly claw their way up to the surface and into the guild itself.

California Quail
Appearance Male California Quails have a black chin and cheeks which are edged with white, and have separate white ‘eyebrows’. They have blue-grey breasts with cream to rust-brown lower bellies. They have distinct black scalloping, which merges into strong, pale streaks on the dark brown flanks.
Females are slightly smaller, duller and more brown. They have a bit of streaking on their neck and more subdued scalloping on the belly and equal bold streaking on the flanks.
Immature birds are just a shade lighter than the female.
Habitat and Range California Quills range from the western USA to Oregon and then finally to the Baja Peninsula. They have been introduced to numerous continents as game birds.
They reside in uncultivated, open shrubland.
Mating Males are aggressive when courting and tend to fight with each other.
Courtship displays include head dips, puffing up of contour feathers, and spreading of the tail feathers.
Their nests are settled in flattened grassy areas concealed among the dense vegetation. The nest is nestled among either a log or rock. The female lays 10-16 eggs which she then incubates for about 3 weeks.
Young are capable of walking and feeding themselves after hatching, however the parents continue to tend and care for them.
The female broods her children at night and during cold weather, while the male acts as a sentry. They start to fly at around 10 days old.
They will take on a single mate for the entirity of the breeding season, however when it comes around again, they typically choose a new mate.
Outside of the breeding season, they occur in large groups of about 20 quails.
Diet California Quails consume seeds, fruit, leaves, insects, and caterpillars. They typically feed in the early mornings and late afternoons.
They are preyed on by bobcats, coyotes, squirrels, great horned owls, skunks, snakes, and sometimes domestic cats.
Miscellaneous California Quails have a lifespan of 1-4 years old. They weigh an average of 150-190 grams and measure 24-27 cm long. They have a wingspan of 32-37 cm.
California Quails are capable of reaching speeds of 64 km/h.
They have a population estimate of 1-3.8 million birds.

VERY important question I saw a smallish dragon (like maybe a little over a foot long) poking its head out of a hollow in an oak tree for about two seconds before it disappeared into the hole. It wasn't super brightly colored, maybe some blue-ish tints over brown, and had very pale yellow eyes. I'm in the Willamette in Oregon, do you know what species it might have been? And more importantly, was that oak hollow probably its nest? Does it have babies in there?
Ten thousand percent a Clark's Wyrm, Microdraco clarkii, they're the most common wyrm on the west coast of the United States. Females are marginally more colorful than males, with that blueish hue you mentioned, but the species ranges from primarily green to brown. They usually don't get longer than 40" in the case of females, but it's fully possible the one you saw was a mature adult. They're pretty common in suburban and forested areas, since like the other Microdraco they nest in burrows. Because of that, it's unlikely your wyrm was nesting in there, so it was likely foraging--their size and relatively non-potent venom means they aren't capable of taking larger prey, but they'll eat rats, birds, and small squirrels if they can catch them. I know from experience that Oregon specimens will raid ground and wood-nesting wasp nests this time of year once the threat from the active workers has died down, too, so that may have been what yours was up to.
Fun facts:
They're the only member of their genus to have a spaded tail tip! This makes them really easy to ID despite otherwise looking like "generic wyrm #10," especially for beginner dragonologists.
First scientifically documented in 1805 by William Clark, hence the name.
Like all Microdraco wyrms, the females are solely responsible for incubating the young.
Despite their solitary nature, they will coexist with other wyrms as long as food and burrowing locations remain plentiful. The only time territories are really established is if overcrowding becomes an issue.
Wiggly guys who only bite as a last resort if you grab them, I got peed on by a juvenile today trying to move it off the road because the sun had warmed up the asphalt and he got cosy :(

So the species name is a combination of the word dragon from Finland/dutch. And Ural is also a place in Finland. Also the number of his kids are the lucky numbers in Finland.
