Sorry what’s up w the Ethan slater stuff? I know him only from your posts / SpongeBob stuff
HI HELLO please buckle in
yep -- the same guy from the spongebob musical, and my posts abut the spongebob musical.
he blew up completely and now the general public knows him as 'ariana grande's new boyfriend' - their relationship seems to have started off the back of co-starring in the upcoming wicked musical film adaptation.
it's just been like. a monkey's paw curling sort of a way for him to get catapulted to fame, as i had always really enjoyed him as a performer (as spongebob, yes, but also in the other roles i'd seen him in,) and my biggest hope back around 2017 was that he would continue in and be really successful in theatre, get a lot of broadway roles, maybe take on some existing parts i thought he'd really suit, like seymour in little shop or ogie in waitress.......... but instead he booked the role of boq from wicked in a massive hollywood film production instead, where he met ariana grande. THE ariana grande.
and then yeah. at some point, he and grande broke up with their respective partners, (slater leaving both his wife AND newborn son) jumped into a new relationship, and now the whole wider internet knows who he is but certainly not for the right reasons.
there's been speculation regarding whether or not grande and slater had cheated on their previous partners before their relationship began with various sources coming out of the woodwork saying "yes they did" and others saying "no they didn't" -- humans are all perfectly capable of making stuff up, the media especially, so i simply don't know who to trust and i admit it had completely shattered my whole good impression of him - PLUS it gave the wider internet an absolutely awful first impression of him, resulting in, yeah, the (frankly, unflattering, sometimes downright cruel) memes of him popping up on twitter and, as i discovered yesterday, in non-theatre youtubers' videos who would literally never have heard of him if not for the slater-grande romance 🥲
FULL COVERAGE of the situation as it was happening can all be found on the lovely @notasimpleslater's blog under the tag 'ozgate' if you want to delve deeper!
I had the absolute pleasure of doing not one, but two more covers with the amazing, wonderful @numberonetinabelcherdefender!! I did all of the audio editing for these two SpongeBob Musical songs, but they did all of the lyric editing!! Mad props to them.
The german production of spongebob the musical in Hamburg just ended with Patricks actor proposing to his boyfriend to *earsplitting* applause, how's you guyses night going?
Okay this has been rolling around in my head as a mix of current hyperfixation + long-standing fandom
So I’ve been consuming a lot of SpongeBob: The Musical content lately (local theatre doing it soon) and a couple days ago I randomly had the thought of how good Ethan Slater would be as a Peter Parker/Spiderman because HAVE YOU SEEN HIM CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN UPSIDE DOWN AND BELT SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HECK
Anyway. Tangential thought that I will leave to the Tumblr cosmos: Peter Parker as the titular character in a Midtown High School production of SpongeBob: The Musical.
(It would mainly happen bc MJ likes being unpredictable and proving ppl wrong, so she auditions for Sandy. Peter and Ned run lines with her before auditions and show up for moral support, and basically stumble their way into SpongeBob and Patrick’s friendship dynamic by adding their handshake into the BFF song)
(Betty and Abe as an unexpected but awesome Karen/Plankton duo)
(Liz, who in this world is still around, as either the Mayor or Pearl is taking a great step against type)
(Flash tries for Squidward, we’ll see how it goes)
Major plot point: Peter navigating his rehearsal schedule with Spiderman duties (“Doc Ock! Would love to stay and chat, but I have rehearsal in 20 minutes and my stage manager is scarier than you”) and basically almost missing Tech Week because it falls right before Civil War (in this imagined timeline). Also Peter successfully attempting all the stuntwork that he definitely couldn’t do pre-Spider bite WITHOUT FLY RAIL (how do they not know he’s Spiderman)
And the best part: Tony finds out like the day before tech rehearsals that the theatre dept needs help putting set pieces together, and he rounds up the rogue Avengers in the middle of the night to put it all together to surprise the Midtown kids with a fully-built, Broadway-grade set to use for the show and costumes that are suspiciously perfect.
so far i have threatened to fight our vocal coach three times, been made fun of for my lack of motor skills, been glared at by one of our dance captains, and called Perch Perkins the third gender and rehearsal isnt even over
Thinking some more about how I wish I could tag things with musical notation. Although I *want* to be able to do it, I think it's a power I probably *shouldn't* have, because (setting aside the fact that I can't actually read music) I would start tagging everything with tunes from songs that I personally associate with whatever I'm posting, but these associations would be completely opaque to anyone else. And half my tags are already an incomprehensible mess of inside jokes with myself. I forgot until this very moment that I was tagging things with planetary correspondences for a bit there.
anyway... obviously i guess casting directors can do what they like but it should be noted in the earliest casting calls for the spongebob musical (for principals at least) it's noted that all characters can be any ethnicity except for sandy who is listed as specifically black or latino...
how i'd costume the spongebob musical if i ever got the chance: a youtube video by me. inspired by my love of the spongebob musical's costumes, from the world premiere in chicago to the creative takes by non-replica and community theatre productions!
here's the trio to tempt you, the rest of the full designs are under the cut, and please watch the video for my full explainations about why i chose to do what i did on each!
Ho, ho, ho! Time for BritishSANTAward Day 3! This art is for @sebby1986 as I remember them doing so well in their production of SpongeBob the Musical, as well as being a really nice person, so this just acts as a little "you did it!". Hope you like it! Merry Christmas! 💙

ive seen a lot of (very misguided) discussion about vocaloid/vsynth in regards to AI voices discourse, so i thought it would be a good idea to sit down and explore vocaloid as a software, as well as mentioning other software of the same genre, to give people who dont really know much a better understanding
first and foremost: i dislike AI voices that are in unregulated spaces right now. actors who are finding their hard work end up on some website for anyone to use without compensation is devastating, and shows a lack of respect for the effort it takes in the field.
however, vocaloid has a much longer history that pre-dates these aggregate sites. vocaloid software was first released in 2004, and was initially marketed towards professional musicians. vocaloid's second version of the engine, however, decided to broaden the market towards general consumers, pitching it as helpful software to those who wanted to produce music, but didn't have the personal skill or ability to have someone else sing for their music (range, note holding, etc). amateur musicians wouldn't know how to direct someone to tackle a lyric persay, but using software would be easy to learn and they would learn the terminology associated with certain performance decisions.
in vocaloid 2's era, miku was released. miku's voice provider is Saki Fujita, a well respected voice actress who actually does a lot of work in anime as well as video games! the popularity of miku is its own separate post of history, but the explosive nature of it, i would argue, is the reason that vocaloid and other commercial voice synthesizer software ultimately ended up geared towards all consumers instead of just professional musicians. (crypton and yamaha did absolutely still cater to professional musicians, having private or non released banks only for certain companies/contractors to use though).
flash forward, and technology has developed way further. in 2013, cevio released, and in 2017, synthV debuted. by this point, vocal synthing has expanded from just singing software to also include software intended for just speaking (voiceroid by AHS software) and the idea of an AI bank to improve the quality and clarity of voice banks is becoming more feasible.
however, i wouldnt say the developments in AI voices came strictly from this side of things. in fact, i distinctly remember back in the early 2010s, people were using websites with voice models of characters like glados (portal) and spongebob. these audio posts were seen as novelties, and admittedly theyre fun just to mess around with (and people often find the spongebob rap music that yourboysponge makes to be pretty well done!), they do lead the way to better developed technology that doesnt compensate the artist...
so back to vocaloid. the thing about vocaloid (and all vocal synthesizers) is that contracts are in place to give appropriate time and compensation, along with permission to even use the person's voice. saki fujita continues to update miku's voicebank because she is being paid well to do so. this can be said for all vocal synth products. because these companies (crypton, ahs software, internet co, etc) specialize in making these tools and products for it, they have the appropriate knowledge on what proper compensation looks like. a random person grabbing a "raiden shogun genshin ai voice" model has none of those things. the voice actress doesnt get money off of that. its stolen work. AI can be used ethically, but it has to be done with regulation.
im leaving out specifics on certain vocaloids/vsynthesizers since its tangential to this post at best, but im making this so people have a better understanding of the history and intended usage of vocal synthesizer software. thank youuuuu
