When all the pieces she stitched to the fabric I coloured them. To do that I used fabric paints that Giordana has and also my own acrylic paints. It's interesting that it isn't a nice and even coat of paint, that it's lighter in some places and darker on others.

De NZH-tramlijnen van Haarlem naar Alkmaar en van Amsterdam-Noord naar Purmerend en Edam/Volendam zijn het onderwerp van een nieuwe uitgave van Stichting De Nieuwe Blauwe Tram in Haarlem. Het boekje beschrijft de historie van de tramlijnen tussen 1880 en 1956, toen ook de tram van Amsterdam naar Volendam is vervangen door een bus. Rond 1880 start de aanleg van drie NZH-tramlijnen in Noord-Holland. De eerste is de lijn Haarlem – Alkmaar. Deze lijn passeert het Noordzeekanaal bij Velsen eerst met een brug, maar van 1906 tot 1924 maakt de tram gebruik van een stoompont – uniek voor West-Europa. De tramlijnen van Amsterdam naar Purmerend/Alkmaar en naar Edam/Volendam worden aangelegd vanaf 1881. Vanaf het begin zijn deze lijnen belangrijk voor de ontwikkeling van het toerisme in Waterland. In 1932 elektrificeert de NZH de lijnen naar Purmerend en Volendam. De lijnen overleven de oorlog, maar in 1949 sluit de NZH de lijn naar Purmerend en in 1956 valt datzelfde lot de lijn naar Edam/Volendam ten deel. De NZH-tramlijnen zijn van groot belang voor de economische ontwikkeling van Kennemerland en Waterland. In Waterland hebben ze ook veel bijdragen aan het toerisme naar Edam, Volendam en Marken. Stichting De Nieuwe Blauwe Tram reconstrueert in Haarlem een NZH A600-tram uit 1932. Ter ondersteuning van dit ambitieuze project geeft de stichting boekjes uit over de historie van het NZH-trambedrijf. Het boekje over de trams boven het IJ is deel 7 in de serie. De nieuwe uitgave telt 92 pagina's en meer dan 100 historische afbeeldingen van stoom- en elektrische trams tussen Haarlem en Alkmaar en in Waterland. Het boekje kost 19,95 euro en is verkrijgbaar bij diverse boekhandels in de regio en direct bij Stichting De Nieuwe Blauwe tram via https://denieuweblauwetram.nl.

Civil society organizations that are taking the Dutch state to court over its position in the Gaza war receive broad support for this. Oxfam Novib, PAX and The Rights Forum are demanding in summary proceedings the immediate cessation of the supply of parts for Israeli F35 fighter planes. Amnesty International contributed to the preparation of the lawsuit and several other NGOs have now expressed their support. In addition, more than 1,000 individual Dutch people showed their support by contributing to a crowdfunding campaign. The case will be presented to the court in The Hague on Monday, December 4 at 10 a.m. and can be followed via a livestream.

How does one get into being a book restorer? I have done a little bookbinding in high school.

Studying under a more experienced book restorer, I guess. In the Netherlands, there is an organisation called Stichting Handboekbinden (Bookbinding by hand Foundation) to which aspiring bookbinders/book restorers have to apply with some of their work in order to obtain an official certificate. Depending on your knowledge of bookbinding and restoration techniques, you can obtain more certificates proving you have what it takes to take on a book made before the 1880's, restoring parchment and/or vellum, etc. Unfortunately, bookbinding is a dying profession in the Netherlands so the foundation may not exist for much longer.

My mum's been in the profession for about fifteen years now, and she's employed by various archives in the region to fix books from the 1400s to now!

Guy who just went to the Ellsworth Kelly retrospective again: Wow, there sure are a lot of random Ellsworth Kelly things out there all of a sudden.

Kelly made this pencil sketch/schematic [top] to produce his contribution [above] to an artist poster series commemorating the 100th anniversary of van Gogh's death. But obviously someone in Holland saved it, and now it's been flipped twice and is coming up for a third time.

Ausgehend von dem internationalen „Monument voor het Onbekende Kind“ in Arnheim-Delhuyzen mit 35 Steinen aus aller Welt, soll in jedem beteiligten Land ein eigenes nationales Denkmal geschaffen werden. Hermann van Veen weihte das deutsche Denkmal im Juni 2005 im Allwetterzoo ein.
