Renegade 2023 Typeset Exchange: Regardless of the Hardships by Ehann

When I picked up a pinch-hit for @admiraltypress in this year's @renegadepublishing typeset exchange, and saw this SVSS fic on the list, it was JUST a few days after one of my fellow Renegade discord members has shared some really great public domain illustrations, and I knew exactly what I wanted to use for this one. I'm pretty happy with how the bamboo theme turned out!

Regardless of the Hardships is a canonverse AU where Shen Yuan transmigrated into the body of Mu Qingfang, peak lord of Qian Cao peak, instead. I've only read a smattering of SVSS fic so far, and this slow-burn was a fun one to dive into!

And my favourite silly little detail in all of my recent typesets is the post-it note on the summary page, pulled from the tags. (I'd stuck it in on a whim right before I closed the file to go off and do other things, and promptly forgot all about it. When I came back and saw it again, I was entertained all out of proportion to the situation. Sometimes I'm easily amused.)

Alright so if you read even half as much svsss bingqiu fic as I do, you've probably already read it. But I just absolutely love this author and this fic is so good. I will admit to being a bit confused by the summary at first so here's the premise:

After the immortal alliance conference shen qingqiu's depression is (if possible) even worse than in the books. He starts getting suicidal and triggers an emergency system protocol- incognito mode. Looking slightly different, he leaves the majority of his life behind and sets out to be a rouge cultivator. He ends up around jinlan city. Unfortunately without a cure exists. Shen Qingqiu needs regular qi transfers. Best place to get discreet treatment? A brothel. Two and a half years after the immortal alliance conference that's where sqq meets ju ying. Who he just immediately thinks is so cool and pretty she must be destined to marry luo binghe. XD

SV Summer Solstice Exchange:

Mirror's Reflection

After killing his cruel shifu at the Immortal Alliance Conference, Shen Jiu rejects Yue Qingyuan’s attempts to bring him to safety and flees the conference. By chance, while fleeing the cultivation world’s pursuit of Wu Yanzi’s accomplice, he happens to run into a boy who shares his face and surname. This boy, Shen Yuan, is nothing like Shen Jiu— he’s the third young master of a wealthy family, who has lived his life without a single moment of hardship, and spends his days reading novels and daydreaming about traveling the world. Shen Jiu, jealous of his double’s easy life, is surprised and a bit baffled to find that Shen Yuan is discontent with living his life safely inside the walls of his family’s manor, and even a bit jealous of Shen Jiu’s ability to go where he pleases and do what he wishes without worrying about his family’s reputation or concerns. After Shen Jiu is mistaken for the lookalike by members of Shen Yuan’s own household, he proposes an solution: that the two switch places, letting Shen Jiu live Shen Yuan’s comfortable, idle life while the other boy travels the world.

Liu Qingge gets the same feeling that he gets right before he discovers he’s walked into a trap array. The kind with poison-tipped arrows. “It isn’t mine.” Shen Qingqiu nods equanimously, though the tension in his shoulders belies his calm. “I found it.”

Shen Qingqiu, abruptly, no longer looks very calm at all. “Begging shidi to say that again. Surely this shixiong misheard. You—?”

“In a flower,” Liu Qingge elaborates.

There was a little boy.

He was tiny, not even reaching Shen Jiu’s hips. His face was smeared with dirt and grime, his cheeks sunken in, and hair cut messily short. A slave brand was barely visible on the nape of his neck. Shen Jiu’s heart squeezed as he stared at the tiny child. There was a pang of familiarity as the boy raised his head and their eyes met. Green met green and Shen Jiu inhaled sharply. The boy looked the same as Shen Jiu did when he was younger. Scrawny and sharp. Mouth already turning down into a scowl as he stared defiantly back at the cultivator before him.

Shen Jiu had no inherent love for children. He tolerated the other disciples on Qing Jing Peak for his Shizun’s sake but found himself away from them whenever possible. The familial feeling inside his heart was new and reminded him of the love he once had for Qi-ge. Five seconds after meeting this brat and he already wanted to pinch his cheeks and ensure that he was healthy and happy.

Liu Qingge bristled. “Who’s scared?” “Just don’t glare at him and you should be fine,” Shen Qingqiu said, glancing away as he retrieved one of his many fans from his sleeve. He opened it with a flick of his wrist. “Though if he cries—” The unmistakable sound of a child’s laughter hit his ears. Shen Qingqiu’s head jolted up in surprise. Then his face paled. Liu Qingge held Luo Binghe upside down, one little ankle gripped in his steady hand. Shen Qingqiu had barely looked away for a moment! Luo Binghe seemed to be greatly enjoying the way Liu Qingge shook him around like a doll but Shen Qingqiu couldn’t allow such a thing to continue. “Don’t hold him like that!” Shen Qingqiu exclaimed. He made a grab for Luo Binghe but Liu Qingge held the child out of the way, one severe brow lifted. “Why not? Mingyan used to love this.” As if to prove his point, Liu Qingge lightly swung Luo Binghe, drawing out more hiccuping giggles. Demon children were sturdy but still, that couldn’t be good for him! Right?!
