succession fic rec list

In honour of succession s4 coming out, I thought I’d make a list of my favourite succession fics. These are all either romangerri or tomgreg, but other characters tend to feature fairly prominently. I’ve split these fics up into two categories: missing moments in canon and fix-it fics. The first category features fics that stick closely to the events of canon and are true to the tone of the show. The latter includes fics that try and give the characters more functional and healthier relationships, and are more optimistic. Fics with an asterisk are my personal favourite. 

As always, check the tags and warnings on ao3 before reading. And without further ado, see below for the fics :)

missing moments in canon

the nutcracker [M] by @thefudge [1,218 words] - “Roman. Behave.” (or Gerri and Roman see The Nutcracker. Holiday prompt). 

This fic would fit right in with one of the early s2 episodes, it nails their dynamic from that era perfectly. It’s a romangerri classic: sexual-but-not-really-sexual contact, and its super hot. A must-read.

Must Be Love [T] by @everybodyilovedies [2,719] - On the plane ride back from Tuscany, Kendall and Roman get some time alone to talk about dickpicgate, and the woman at the (attempted) receiving end of it. 

Even if you aren’t a romangerri shipper, I would recommend this fic just for the hilarious dynamic between Kendall and Roman. The author manages to tease the possibility of a reunion between Roman and Gerri, while also staying true to the events of canon. 

the true encounter [M] by wellprince [1,354] - “Hell yeah he is,” Roman says. “He’s about to splash his cum all over this great white nation of ours. And I’m the invisible hand behind the handjob. Look, you’d love him if you met him.” That’s probably not true. Gerri doesn’t love anyone. Whatever. 

This fic is the perfect coda to ep 3.06. Not only is it really well-written, it also functions as a great analysis of Roman’s character, his sexuality issues and explores what pulls him towards both Mencken and Gerri.

**You Could Make a Killing [M] by gaycoruscant [3,633] -  After watching Logan slap Roman, Gerri struggles with conflicting loyalties. 

This fic explores the contradictions of Gerri’s relationship with Roman and her support of his father. Gerri is beautifully written - she’s multi-faceted, and the author does a really good job getting into her head. The writing is beautiful, and there’s a delicious tension between Roman and Gerri throughout. 

fix-it fics

live near your fire as winter blows [E] by @alittledizzy [10,047] - Roman invites Gerri to a cabin in the Catskills and they manage to work through some (not all, but some) of their shit. 

Roman and Gerri get their shit together in a way that feels very in-character. I especially enjoy how the author has handled the age gap - this fic does not shy away from the fact that Gerri is an older woman, which makes both her character and the sex scene feel really natural and authentic. 

Ring the Bells That Still Can Ring [E] by moreculturelesspop [1,800] - Roman considers fatherhood and an alternative life with Gerri. 

This fic is exactly what I imagine the inside of Roman’s head sounds like. It’s very well-written and presents a really interesting study of Roman’s views on parenting and his feelings towards Gerri. Fantastic Roman POV.

holiday [T] by @dollsome-does-tumblr [2,107] - Gerri steals Roman away for breakfast on the last morning in Tuscany. Set after 3.09. 

If you’re worried about what will happen to Roman and Gerri in s4, or still hurting after the s3 finale, read this fic. This fic gives a real sense of closure to the events in Italy and still leaves open the possibility of a reunion in the future.

missing moments in canon

**the old way with the sledge [M] by @round-thedecay [4,390] - Tom takes care of Greg, with many layers of bargaining, withheld information, and slaughterhouse imagery in between. Meanwhile: Tom's marriage will be a slow death.

I can literally hear Tom and Greg’s voices in my head as I read the dialogue in this fic. Even though Shiv only shows up at the end, she feels like such a presence throughout this fic. Both her character and relationship with Tom are really well-handled.

Subterranean Homesick Blues [M] by @envius [9,077] - After a month of separation, Tom gets everything he thought he wanted.

The author really understands the dynamic between Tom/Greg and Tom/Shiv, with both relationships feeling balanced and in-character. This is MY s4, so no matter what happens in the show, I know I’ve always got this fic. 

Three Legs [E] by @neroxsporus [6,603] - Tom and Greg celebrate Greg's moving up. It's hard to say who gets more out of it.

Excellent coda to ep 2.04, where Greg uses Tom as a human footstool. This fic nails the weird, homoerotic aspects of their relationship and explores the culture of toxic masculinity and power at Waystar. Very funny and in-character.

**Saturn's Stomach [M] by baffledbear [6,549] - Things take a turn for the worse when Logan invites Tom and Greg on a secluded hunting trip in Virginia. Deep in the wilderness and with nowhere else to run, the pair must rely on each other in order to survive a deadly game.

This fic feels like it is written by someone who really understands Tom’s arc and what the narrative is trying to convey. The ending is incredibly satisfying, tying in many of the themes from the show. The relationship between Tom and Greg develops in a really plausible manner, and while they are endgame, Tom and Shiv’s relationship is still incredibly meaningful throughout. 

fix-it fics

put your money where your mouth is tonight [E] by asphaltworld [6,964] - Greg smokes and tries to think of what to do, like, with his life in general. 

Greg loves being a sugar baby: The fic. This is a very plausible take on Greg’s character, and the author does a really good job delving into Greg’s POV and his thoughts on Tom. This is a fun, lighthearted read that fits in well with the end of s3.

I’m writing chapter 5 of my tomgreg fic in a notebook in a restaurant. In a previous chapter, Greg admits to wanting to drive to Graceland with Tom while listening to Paul Simon’s “Graceland” on repeat.

New fic ✨ longest oneshot I’ve ever written 🤭 I started this right after S4E1, abandoned it for many weeks, then finished it quite recently.

Summary: In an effort to get closer to him, Greg indulges Tom's escalating promiscuous behaviour until they finally reach a point of no return.

Preview:

Tom smiles tightly at him but doesn’t rise to it, “We should have a threesome.”

“A— Who? Sorry, uh—“ he flounders as his brain scrambles to compute. All he can hear echoing in his ears is the way Tom said threesome over and over and over, “You, um… What—"

“You, me, and a girl makes three, Greg,” Tom says, looking manic, and all Greg can do is nod.

He’s mainly focussed on getting back into Tom’s good books, and maybe just on getting close to Tom again in general. It isn’t lost on him that this is another escalation, a significant one, but this is just how Tom operates. They leap frog through this mess until they end up somewhere insane, and then they start over.

“So… Okay, well… Maybe?”

Tom makes a face, somewhere between confused and annoyed, “What’s that supposed to mean? Maybe? What the fuck, Greg. Is this not like a little Hirsch wet dream?”

Greg blinks because his little Hirsch wet dream would probably feature Tom more prominently than anyone else, but he can’t say that so he just shrugs.

“I’ve never really… Had that kind of… Of interaction? Like an interaction of that persuasion before?” he says

Tom rolls his eyes before they lock back onto Greg seriously. It’s heated and charged and it makes something throb in the pit of Greg’s stomach. He’s missed being the centre of Tom’s attentions, crushed by the weight of his gaze in the best possible way. The moment stretches on for a while, bordering on uncomfortable before Tom slowly inhales, licking his lips before he speaks, “I’ll look after you.”

AHAHA thank you caitlin it is... somehow That, at some point after i finished season three i thought to myself 'wow i love their fucked up dynamic and off putting vibes... what if they got stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash <3' which will have it all: two men that should have more wilderness knowledge than they actually have, fear of death and mortal injury, an illness that would have been easily curable with antibiotics, and tomgreg finally fighting like chickens

It’s funny, how Tom has always known objectively, logically, that Greg is a quote-unquote, ‘lengthy man’, and yet this feels like the first moment he’s been truly aware of it. Of course he, and truthfully every single Roy sibling has found a way to badger him over it, but watching him drag their life raft ashore somehow hammers the point home in a way Tom hadn’t conceptualized before.

With another half-successful yank of the corded nylon rope wrapped around the raft, the bedraggled pop-up tent above it collapses inward, encasing Tom in the salty embrace of lightweight polyester. He doesn’t move; he simply lifts one hand up to raise the tent from his face to continue watching Greg flounder in the damp sand like a two-legged ferret. 

“You know, this, this would be—” Greg gives the raft another hard yank, “—you could, you know, get out and this wouldn’t take so long.” His voice is hoarse, and he gives a wheezy little cough as he pauses with his hands on his knees. 

Smoke inhalation, Tom thinks absently. Then he giggles, and feels his eyes attempt to well up as the sound rasps out of him. Somehow, he doesn’t seem to have enough moisture in his body for that. He thinks maybe, maybe he might be losing it. But that’s also a thought he’s had before. Tom decides briefly that he should climb out, but before he can move Greg bends down into the raft; not unlike a particularly long-necked goat in search of extra feed pellets at the petting zoo. 

He tears a damp canvas bag from the corner with a harsh velcro rip, tossing it out behind him before he cups the side of Tom’s head like he’s checking a melon at the grocery store. Tom grimaces away from his damp, sandy palm. 

“Hey, stop, stop, you uh…” Greg lowers his voice, as if there’s anyfuckingbody else that can possibly hear him right now. Then Tom imagines that they washed up on a crowded beach on O’ahu, and he’s having a nervous breakdown surrounded by sunbathers covered in Coppertone. A nervous breakdown within five hundred feet of a goddamned Sandals Resort. “You seemed like you were, that you might have gotten somewhat concussed when we—”

Tom cuts him off simply by way of grabbing Greg by the shoulders to hoist himself up; grunting with annoyance as his vision swims for a minute. Maybe he was concussed. Swimming in wet fabric, it feels uncomfortably yonic as he climbs out, eyes squeezing shut against the harshly bright sun overhead. The heat is so much worse out here; Tom can almost imagine it drifting up from the sand in waves. 

His eyelashes, his eyelids themselves already feel crusty with salt as he rubs at them punishingly with the heels of his hands. Fuck, did his eyes hurt. Come to think of it (which was difficult; the thinking part, at present) his whole head hurt. Shielding his eyes with the flat of one hand he peers up at Greg first, who is worrying his chapped bottom lip with his teeth as he watches. 

That familiar friend of Tom’s, the irrational anger that wells up inside of him like a restless old lion at a shitty roadside tourist trap, rattles feebly against the cage where Tom keeps it. Sometimes with greater success than on other occasions. He opens his mouth to snarl at Greg for looking at him with that wounded expression, like his cat just had kittens and Tom was the runt who just wasn’t going to make it. As his eyes adjust properly, the noise temporarily dies in his throat, a flame blown out by an ominously building wind. 

To either side of the raft, as far as Tom can see to his left or his right is simply sand; bare right up to the rocky treeline that seems to be slowly growing consumed by the long hungry roots of the shockingly tall trees looming there. As he looks, a flock of some pacific birds breaks out of the tree line and wheel overhead for the briefest moment before turning back inland; the aviary version of a Lincoln Navigator doing a three-point turn. No beachgoers, no Sandals resort. 

“Fuuuuuuuck,” Tom breathes out, hoarse and reeling. Greg nods clumsily; a marionette whose puppeteer is very exhausted by all of this. 

“That’s- that’s exactly it,” he says, bleak resignation in his tone, in the sloping line of his shoulders. “Yeah, Tom, it’s…it’s fuck alright.”
