We used to purchase mooncakes from Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel many moons ago until we switched over to Raffles Hotel due to their Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake. With the latest price increase this year and low discounted offer, our pocket just couldn’t take the hit anymore.  We went back to Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant (万豪轩中餐厅) from the former hotel as they are offering a bigger discount! Immediately went online to order two boxes of Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes (萬豪精致冰皮月饼). Original price is S$88 less 40% corporate discount so we paid S$52.80.

On the day of collection. I was dismayed to find out that the so called Mini Mooncakes (迷你月饼) are real dainty in size that one can pop the whole piece into the mouth! While the packaging was beautifully designed and accompanied with a stylish cooler bag, the boxes containing the mooncakes only had loose plastic cover so it doesn’t keep the contents airtight. Coupled with the tiny size of the mooncakes, the glutinous rice skin was dried out and hard. :(

PS - Kudos to the team at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel for their swift action in getting in touch with my sis after she feedbacked to them on the dry and hard snowskin mooncakes. The hotel replaced our two boxes of mooncakes and I am glad to say that the snowskin got back it soft chewy texture.

My Top BL Series Couples

Let me start off by saying I haven’t watched too many bl shows but so far these are my fav!

1. Hao Ting and Shi Gu

they are in my number spot (despite the last episode that robbed us of our happy ending) because they have a nice kind of enemies to lovers plot but it’s not terrible. They are a nice high school lover trope that isn’t cringey and they really grew to be a lovely couple that didn’t rush too much. I’m glad Hao Ting was ready to sacrifice everything for Shi Gu, he literally said whatever he chose to study in college wouldn’t matter as long as he was with Shi Gu. THATS LOVE RIGHT THERE AND I WON’T SETTLE FOR LESS.

2. Adachi and Kurosawa

Cherry Magic was the first bl drama I ever watched and I’m glad to say this was my first because it made me want to watch more. Although I didn’t get to see the movie, I absolutely loved the show. I love Adachi especially, he’s a relatable character that I really enjoy. Kurosawa is a bold and nice person that was ALWAYS respectful to Adachi and never crossed the line. He was absolutely memorable and sweet and was nothing but lovely to Adachi. The whole plot of the show was super interesting too which added to the amazing roles each character played. I really love the ending too and it made me super happy to see their conflict resolved and happy and cuddly. Miss them a lot 💔.

3. Tang Yi and Shao Fei

IT WAS REALLY HARD TO PUT THEM IN NUMBER 3! But they are another enemies to lovers trope I enjoy. I won’t just watch this show for them or the other couples, but the amazing plot of this whole show. The plot twist will always get me. Anyways, I love them a lot and I love that this drama was dramatic and funny as much as it was romantic. These are my fav boys and nobody can stop me from posting them over and over again.

I have The Long Season brainrot. Which means I have thoughts.

But briefly:

The Long Season is The Bad Kids if they all grew up, and their choices were all so bad, they could only choose among those bad choices. Which is why the last five minutes of the drama is bittersweet, with the bitter very subtly wrestling the sweet onto the train tracks.

The actors are all so good - I knew Qin Hao, Liu Lin and Tang Zeng from other dramas - but Chen Minghao and Jiang Qiming were the revelations for me. (Chen Minghao can *dance*!)

Things I loved: apart from the pitch perfect performances, I loved the soundtrack, naturally, given that Xin Shuang is also a musician. I liked how they made a main character deaf, and how the people around him interact with that as a fact rather than as a disability.

There were two things that I really appreciated about the drama: the way it had no fucks to give about episode length - some were a regular 45 - 48 minutes, others (I'm looking at you, ep 11) we're an hour and forty seven minutes. The other is how whatever the music is at the end, and each episode has different music at both ends, it is absolutely important to the director that it has its time, never mind if the titles were all done - have a nice black screen and listen to the music!

Have to say, that chaotic, auteur-ish approach to a drama is only possible with the platform supporting it, so props to tencent.

Taking away props from tencent for the ridiculously bad subs. When I edit this post later, I'll upload some examples of how utterly rubbish the subs are. Have heard that they've resubbed it now, so if you haven't yet watched it, hope you have a better time of it. Because this drama deserves good subs and right now it doesn't have them.

Finally (for now) The Long Season reminded me of a short film we used to watch back when PK Nair did his Film Appreciation workshop in the 80s and 90s: Big City Blues. (Will add a link if I find it on YouTube). It has the same post-industrial anomie; a portrait of youth wasted and those on the margins abandoned so brutally they have no choice but to be brutal in turn.

That's why the last five minutes are not as easy to watch as the censors may have hoped. It's a good thing that Xin Shuang has enough control over the material to allow for what the censors need, while leaving the viewer with whatever complicated feelings they have.

Afterthought: I also watched Thirteen Years of Duat recently, an iqiyi/Light On drama. Equally short, covering the same kind of ground, in that cops investigate murders from more than a decade ago. We see the same changes in society, a similar portrait of ageing and persistence, of what the snatching away of hope does to the young.

But that drama, though also very good, followed a more prescribed path to its conclusion, with a tacky and tacked upon paen to law enforcement and the flag and all that rubbish.

Tencent and iqiyi are about the same in terms of how mainstream or offbeat their dramas are. But the directors of both these dramas made choices, and those choices make one a decent drama that you'd make excuses for, until you watch the other and see what it's possible to do even when you're required by what passes for socialism to provide a thread of hope.

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.

As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).

Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.

I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)

No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.

Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
