Tumblr, it is time. It is time for me to tell you about this year’s lesbian hallmark-esque movie from Tello Films. To wit:
Tumblr media
A Holiday “I Do”
Much like Christmas at the Ranch, which I talked about last year, this movie is, well, more charming than good. Also like Christmas at the Ranch, it takes place at a horse ranch. Or farm? Or stables? It’s never quite clear except that they make some money from giving riding lessons.
Somehow, as has been pointed out to me, the marketing for this film completely ignores the whole horse aspect of the movie. Maybe because they didn’t want the audience to think it was Christmas at the Ranch 2.0? Which is fair considering that is, in fact, basically what it is. Maybe Tello Films has a hook up with some horse people?
Anyway, we have our lead, Jane. Here’s the sich with Jane: Jane had big career aspirations but she met a boy, thought she fell in love, had a baby, then divorced the boy because she realized she was gay. She and the daughter moved in with mom when Jane’s dad died. I can’t remember the daughter’s name and IMDb isn’t helping me out here, so I’m just going to call her the kid.
The kid likes to say droll, sophisticated, self-aware things that sound exactly like what you expect a kid to sound like in a movie about lesbians made by queer people, but which have no relation to how kids actually talk. Yes, kids can be droll and sophisticated and self-aware, but this kid’s voice was 100% constructed by an adult who maybe hasn’t spent a lot of time around kids. I mean, I haven’t spent a lot of time around kids that age either, but I’m pretty sure they don’t sound like this kid. But still, the kid is funny most of the time, so it kinda works.
Back to the plot:
So Jane is alone and lonely and there’s an obligatory speed dating scene where we meet a bunch of stereotypical lesbians which wants to be funnier than it actually is. She goes home and laments her singlehood. But she can’t lament for too long because Jane’s ex-husband and his new fiancée are about to arrive in town. They’re in town to get married and Jane is in charge of the bachelor party. You see, the ex husband is also Jane’s best friend.
Here’s a question (which is never answered): if the ex-husband’s only connection to this small town is that his ex-wife lives there, why did he choose to have his wedding there? We never get an answer for that question.
After all of that set up, I finally get to introduce the love interest. Her name is Sue, and she’s the lovely couple’s wedding planner!
To facilitate shenanigans, the lovely couple goes off to the airport to pick up the fiancée’s parents and they get stuck there overnight because of the snow. This means that the bride isn’t there to taste the catering and do other things the bride should do before the big day (personally, I’d think you’d want to taste the cake and the catering more than a day before your wedding, but I’ve never gotten married so what do I know?) Jane, who is instantly enamored of Sue, happily fills in as the bride to taste various foods. They get side tracked with sledding and a mid day yoga break (who stops in the middle of their work project and is like, yes, I’ll go to a random yoga class now?).
There are several quirky side characters that play various parts in the plot. Some of them come off better than others. The evil banker who isn’t really evil because we’re undermining that trope, was particularly a stand out for me. She knew her job and she was totally in.
I’ll leave the conflict/climax/resolution to you, dear reader, should you feel the need to spend $7 to rent it. I feel like it was worth my money.
And in another parallel with Christmas at the Ranch, I spent most of the movie wanting the leads to kiss and then when they actually got to this kiss, damn it was awkward.

Hi I just found out about and watched Riley Parra last week. May I ask why no season 3?
Oh there were a lot of reasons. Everyone involved wanted to do it, but scheduling became a nightmare. There was a brief time when we could have done it, but Liz wouldn't have been available. I went so far as to write a script that didn't include her (as much as I hated the idea) but obviously we never went through with that. We kept pushing it and pushing it, then the pandemic happened. We talked about doing a Zoom reading of a third season, but at that time Marem wasn't available. She gave her blessing for us to have someone else read for Riley, but that felt wrong to everyone. By the time doing another season seemed plausible again, everyone had scattered too far to make it plausible.
It's sad we probably won't be getting more, but! The books are now all available in both digital and paperback! The show would have followed the books as closely as possible, so hopefully that can provide closure for the characters.
I'm so glad you found the series! It's so great knowing people are still finding/enjoying the show! 💗
And if anyone else is looking for it, find it here! Subscribing not only gets you Riley Parra, but a ton of other fun lesbian content (including Liz Vassey's other wlw show, Nikki & Nora, both the original pilot AND the reboot!)

things that are canon in the tmnt 1987 series
donatello hates fish, especially raw fish.
michelangelo once got a job to deliver pizza so he could earn money
leonardo is an avid reader and loves the three musketeers
donatello gave up coffee at one point during season 3
raphael and michelangelo seem to be closest to the punk frogs and visit them often
all of them seem to have separation anxiety, leonardo the most.
all of them enjoy gaming, but leonardo has beaten every game at the arcade and is ridiculously competitive.
also since leonardo has beaten every game at the arcade and we know there’s math games there bc donatello said he likes them, either leonardo is good at math or he’s just a really good guesser
leonardo is a talented artist.
donatello has a college degree under the name “miss donna tello”
raphael enjoys creating disguises and is the most stylish of the turtles when it comes to their clothing.
raphael seems to have an interest in pirates
donatello has model planes in his room
leonardo is allergic to ragweed
raphael dislikes the supernatural, meanwhile donatello refuses to believe it exists despite seeing multiple ghosts in person.
michelangelo has perfect pitch
donatello cries at happy endings
donatello loves the noir genre/aesthetic, and likes to narrate what he’s doing like he’s in a noir film
the turtles were mutated straight into teenagers, and it’s implied several times they remember their lives before they were mutated, including their turtle family members. leonardo has drawings of his turtle relatives on his bedroom wall.
donatello has a kill count of 2 (from what i remember)
raphael briefly took a chemistry course

The Junkyard at the End of the World
 ROTTMNT Donatello x Yokai!reader
This takes place in the bad timeline, a bit after the Krang invasion. There's mentions of death and very light angst.
Could be read as platonic or romantic I guess, and the reader's gender isn't mentioned. (Also I projected a bit too hard on the OC that plays (Y/N) in my head, because now (Y/N) is kinda good at building- an amature engineer if you will)
3k words, rivals to friends. Onto the fic!
Edit: This is now a series. Part two, part three, part four, part five.
****
“You know, I thought the world would end slowly over generations upon generations. But aliens? Really? What is this, one of your sci-fi films?”
I scoffed, taking a sip of soda. The acrid scent of burning buildings floated past me, killing the taste of my drink, and the photo of Mum and Pa stared back, unanswering.
I shook my head, smiling lightly. “You guys are lucky, you know that?” I sighed, rubbing the frame.
“Hey (Y/N)? You should come inside, we’re divvying up the scouting parties and I doubt you wanna end up with Dale any more than I do.” Said April’s familiar voice as she rapped gently on the doorframe.
“Hm?” I said, looking over my shoulder. “Yeah, no. Okay, I’m coming O’Neil.” I smiled, hopping off of the balcony railing.
Once inside, I was met with the far too familiar sounds of people. Yelling, talking, fighting, crying…I felt a shiver run down my spine at the sheer excess. There were so, so many people.
It was by sheer luck that I’d managed to get my own room in the shelter. Mind you, it was barely a room, with only about 6x4 feet of space, and my bed took up almost all of it, but hey, it was mine even if it was small and hard to live in. At least I wasn’t in one of the shared bed spaces, as selfish as it admittedly felt.
  Anyways.
I followed April down the hall towards the main Office. It had been used for secretaries and headmasters at the old college campus once upon a time, but nowadays we used it for conferences and planning amongst the commanders…those commanders just being April, an old mutant named Splinter, his mutant sons, and me, the resident Yokai representative. And I’d only gotten the position because I was the one who found the empty campus and used my mom’s magic to protect it as best as I could…I was rubbish at any actual quote unquote ‘representative’ stuff.
I couldn’t actually speak for the Yokai, I was only really just a quarter Yokai. It didn’t seem like my place. But I was clearly inhuman, what with the horns and scales and claws and all, so…I got the position.
Ugh. Classic (Y/N) overthinking, I don’t have time for this.
I entered the office with my head held high as if I hadn’t just been questioning my own authority for the millionth time today, and sat across from Michelangelo, the youngest mutant.
“So. Scouting parties, I hear?” I said blandly, paging through my notebook in hopes of looking busy.
“Oh, look who finally showed up. We’re so glad to see you! He said without a hint of sarcasm.” Scowled the purple one, crossing his arms. “We’ve been waiting for you to start!”
He’d had something out for me since he moved in, so it was no surprise that we were fighting again. It had really taken off back when I shared a few art pieces a few months ago, only for him to have some sarcastic comment for literally everything…
I scoffed, not in the mood to take it. “Well that’s pretty dumb of you, ‘Tello. You’re a big boy, do it yourself, why don’tcha?”
“Oh gee, I don’t know, maybe because it’s your responsibility, (L/N)!”
I rolled my eyes. “Since when? Look, just because I haven’t let you have your own lab doesn’t mean you need to go out of your way to antagonize me, Purple-boy.”
“This is not about that!” He snapped, slamming his hands down onto the table.
“This is not about that!” I mimicked in a nasally voice, getting a snicker out of his brother Leonardo. I smirked.
“It’s a matter of principle.” Donatello scowled, shaking his head tiredly. “Lovely banter aside, we’re low on food, and more importantly, I’m low on scrap metal!”
Mikey nodded. “The crops in the campus garden aren’t gonna be ready till fall, which is like, three months from now.”
Leo frowned. “So…two parties for the grocery stores in Manhattan, one for New Jersey (which I will not be a part of), and….one for Brooklyn. And I guess a small one for Donnie.”
“Cool cool.” I nodded, crossing my arms.
“I’ll take New Jersey.” Said April, raising her hand.
“And I’ll lead the Brooklyn party,” Raph volunteered.
“Cool. Mikey and I will take Manhattan, and Donnie and (Y/N) will get spare parts at the junkyard.” Leo decided.
I jolted up, half aware of Purple doing the same. “What?! But…sir, no offense intended, but good lord are you thick in the head? Have you seen how we get along?!” I exclaimed.
Donatello nodded. “For once, I concur! No, I’m going by myself, not with…that!”
“Yeah, what he said!” I snapped, feeling my claws sting the fleshy parts of my hands as I clenched them into fists.
“See? You’re getting along great already!” Leo grinned.
  “Pfft.” I scoffed.
  “Scoff.” Said Donnie.
“Oh my god, more proof!” He teased, before growing more serious. “Look guys, you’re the only two here who know anything about tools and construction. You know full well that it isn’t safe to go alone places and it’s even less safe to go in a big group…so please just try to work together, ‘kay?” He finished with a sigh, something…tired behind his eyes.
I softened as I looked at Leo, sympathy prickling at me. He was clearly trying to lead well, and was under a lot of pressure…
I sighed, relaxing my hands. “Fine, Leonardo. I’ll go. But for the record, I know very little about construction- I just draw blueprints sometimes.”
“Which is more than anyone else does!” He said, grinning again. “Thanks (Y/N). See Donnie? Someone is cooperating!”
Donatello rolled his eyes. “Fine, dear brother, clearly this isn’t a fight I can win. But don’t get mad when you have to eateth thy words.”
“Actually the correct old English term would be ‘eateth thine words’, I think. I could be wrong though.” I said blithely.
“Great!” He hissed, squeezing his tech-bo dangerously.
“No problem-o, Donatello,” I smirked, sticking out my tongue.
“Did you seriously just rhyme?” He said, sounding disgusted.
I simply gave him finger guns in response.
***
“So. What sort of scrap metal  are we lookin’ for?” I asked, claws raised as we descended into the junkyard. Purple trudged a few feet ahead of me- even in the midst of the apocalypse he wanted to act like he didn’t know me.
“Ideally titanium. More likely though, steel.” He replied coldly.
“‘Aight.” I said, reaching into my satchel for my multi-tool. “I’m gonna try to scavenge some screws and bolts while we’re out here.”
  He didn’t reply. Typical.
I scoffed. “Talkative, aren’t we.” I muttered, though it came out louder than I meant it to.
“What.” He said, more like a statement than a question. “What do you want right now?! I’m tired, so forgive me, but I don’t care.”
I rolled my eyes. “Jeez man. Chill. I’m just…bored, I guess.”
“Well spare me the quote unquote ‘deetz’.” He said, doing finger quotes.
I shrugged, messing with my multi-tool.
I was too drained to care much about the turtle nowadays, but his disdain for me used to upset me back when they first moved in. Maybe I teased him too much, maybe I was late to meetings often- it wasn’t like he was doing much better. Maybe it was because I turned down his offers to help me with my projects back then, maybe it was because my least favorite color was purple…There were too many variables, and I didn’t care to speculate anymore, not like I used to.
Sometimes people just don’t like you, even when you’re a hot-as-hell Chinese-dragon-person with only mild personality flaws. I thought, chuckling to myself.
I stared out at the horizon as I went to work unscrewing bolts from doors and cars and air conditioners…
I thought that our world would end in fire, swallowed up by the supernova that our sun was fated to become.
But aliens. Really. This was stupid. I sighed, adding another handful of scavenged screws to my bag.
My parents would have loved it, ever the sci-fi fans. …Although, they would have probably not loved the sight of their child working for hours in New York summer heat in order to just barely keep humanity alive. For now, the Yokai were safe at least…in fact, why was I helping the humans?
It wasn’t like I had anything to gain from it…
Well…yes. Yes I did. Like it or not, I was like them, I was 75% human. They were still my species, and I couldn’t just let them go extinct on good conscience.
I heard panting behind me as Donatello dragged a piece of a car door towards his pile of scrap. I checked the time- we’d been out here for an hour and a half.
Well…time to go on break, I decided, and pulled an instant boba tea packet out of my bag.
“Hey Purple, d’you want a snack or something? We’ve been out here for a while.” I called, looking over at him.
He raised an eyebrow and came over to me. “...What?”
“I said, do you want a snack. I have extras in case of an emergency.” I shrugged, and he walked closer.
  “Uh…sure. What do you have?”
“Instant bubble tea, knock-off goldfish from the Trader Joe’s we broke into a while back, sourdough bread, and walnuts for protein.”
“Oh. How…luxurious.” He said, clearly unimpressed. But he sat next to me anyway, and ripped open the walnuts.
“So. Have you found any titanium?” I asked, for once too tired to tease him.
“No, unsurprisingly. Well, I found some scissors made of it, but there isn’t nearly enough for what I have in my blueprints. How…how about you?” He answered a little awkwardly.
“I found a whole bunch of screws, baby!” I smiled, pumping my fist. “Sorry about your lack of luck though, Purple.”
“Don’t call me that.” He said. “That’s what my dad calls us.”
“...Oh. Sorry. I’ll quit it.” I nodded, taking a sip of bubble tea.
“How are you drinking that without ice? That’s absolutely monstrous.” He said, staring at me.
I snorted. “It’s the apocalypse, Donatello. I don’t have the resources for ice- my powers only consist of summoning and controlling water, not freezing it.”
He did a double take. “Wait wait wait, you have powers?”
“Uh…yeah. Why d’you think I’m always at those meetings? I’m the one who supplies the campus water. Thought y’knew that.”
“Oh. I thought you were just the one in charge of filtering the water from the rivers.”
I scoffed. “I’m a Yokai, of course I have powers of some kind…”
“You’re only half. It seemed logical that you wouldn’t.” He shook his head.
“Hm, I’m actually only a quarter. My mom was half, and she was way more powerful…if it weren’t for her collection of mystic scrolls and spells, our lair would be Krang food by now.” (I smiled at the memory of being a kid, digging through her boxes of scrolls…they were always stored by the DVDs and VHSes, which I would also spend hours combing through.)
“I hear a past tense there. Did the Krang get her?” Donatello said, shockingly blunt.
I shook my head. “Nah. She was also half human- she died of cancer three years ago, two and a half years before all…this.” I said, waving out at the empty city beyond the landfill. “My dad died a few years before her in a car accident.”
  “Oh.” Donnie said quietly. “Uh…that’s…unfortunate.”
I shrugged. “Yeah well, it’s the past, who cares?” I paused, dropping the flippant tone. “Um…but thank you for listening and not making a big deal of it, and sorry for bringing down the mood.”
He nodded, eyebrows raised in what might have been sympathy.
After a second, he broke the silence. “Um…segue, but do you have any more of those tea packets? I have an ice maker, so I can actually enjoy it unlike some people.”
I grinned, tossing him the instant boba. “Sure. They’re apoca-licious!”
“That’s awful. No wonder Leo likes you (L/N), you’re as bad as he is.”
“Thanks!” I chuckled, digging my sketchbook out of my bag while he fiddled with his tech in silence.
I blew dust off of the blueprints for the lamp I was building, and got to work right where I left off. It was mostly cosmetic stuff, but I was going for full-on steampunk customizations with glowing blue lights at the base as well as gears that could spin- manually, of course, but still.
There was a sound of slurping behind me, and I was made aware of Donatello shamelessly reading over my shoulder.
“You know, if you add a motor….there, you’ll be able to make the gears spin automatically.” He said, tapping the base of the sketch.
“Oh, yeah?” I said, smiling ruefully. “I…don’t actually have any. I’m afraid I don’t know practically anything beyond basic circuitry and stuff. I’m an artist, not an engineer.”
He grinned. “Still! That’s still a lot more than anyone else in our circle- can I help with this?!”
I smiled, slightly taken aback by his sudden enthusiasm, but pleased. “I’d love that!”
“Cool cool cool! This is gonna be fun, this is a cool design. Low tech, obviously, but for someone who is primarily just a visual artist, it’s kind of impressive!” He exclaimed.
“Woah, is that the first nice thing you’ve ever said to me?” I teased.
“What? What about all the nice things I say when you share your art?” He said, narrowing his eyes.
“Those were clearly sarcasm, you ain’t slick.” I grinned, but his eyes stayed irritated.
I sighed, coughing a bit to clear my throat. “Look….I guess I was just wondering why you hate me so much.” I said, not meeting his eyes.
He looked up, raising a drawn-on eyebrow. “I don’t though? I’m actually relatively neutral towards you?”
“Uh….no? You’re always like, hostile when I’m there. Leo even specifically paired us together because he clearly wanted us to start getting along.” I frowned.
“What? No, I was clearly joking?” He said indignantly. “Leo paired us together because you’re good at building things, even if you’re not great at software.” He added the last part under his breath.
“Wait wait wait! So all those compliments from back when we first met…weren’t sarcastic?” I said, eyes wide.
“Of course not! I literally always clarify ‘he said with no sarcasm whatsoever’!” Donnie exclaimed.
“Dude, that just makes you sound more sarcastic!” I laughed, flicking his shoulder lightly. “So this whole time you haven’t had an issue with me?!”
“Well not till you started being a dum-dum for seemingly no reason.” He scoffed.
“...And that would be because I thought you had a problem with me.” I finished, leaning back on the pile of scrap metal. “...This is pretty stupid, huh?”
“...Yeah.” He nodded, offering a half-hearted smile. “It’s actually…nice, weirdly. To know that the only other person at the campus who knows their way around tech doesn’t hate me…and on a more er…personal level…” He looked at the ground. “It’snicetoknowthatyoudon’thateme.”
  I smiled.
He coughed. “Oh, that was hard to say out loud.”
“Hm? Oh, aw, shoot, I missed that.” I smirked.
“Scoff. No you didn’t, you’re smiling, you know full well what I said and I’ll never say it again.” He said, crossing his arms.
I grinned. “Well…I’m glad that you don’t hate me too, ‘Tello. Here, let’s start this over again…Uh, hi. I’m (Y/N) (L/N)-”
“What? But I already know you?” Donnie frowned.
I shook my head. “It’s a metaphor.” I said dryly.
“Oh. Cool, clarification. Yaaay.” He said weakly, giving me a thumbs up. “Er, continue.”
“Cool cool. I’m (Y/N) (L/N),  brilliant artist, draw-er of blueprints, occasional builder of mechanics, and the base’s resident provider of water. And you are?”
He nodded, starting awkwardly but growing more confident as he went on. “Uh…Hi, hello. I’m Donatello Hamato, sometimes known as Othello Von Ryan, sometimes known as Purple, and you can call me Donnie. I’m a creator of brilliant tech, father to a ridiculous-yet-incredible robot named SHELLDON, and an occasional misser-of-metaphors.
Nice to meet you, (Y/N)....He said without a single semblance of sarcasm.” He narrated. “Sorry, couldn’t resist.” He chuckled.
“Nice to meet ya, Donnie. I’ve got a feeling that we’re gonna create some brilliant things together.” I smiled, holding out my clawed hand.
He smiled back, shaking it with a metal arm that extended from his battle shell. “I think your hypothesis has some merit.”
“Rad.” I grinned, giving the metal arm a fist bump.
“I concur- we gonna be rad.”

Author's note:
Uh 'sup! This is my first ROTTMNT fic. It's a definite deviation from my usual stuff, but uh...I kinda wanna make more! It's fun writing for new characters, even if I'm still trying to properly work out the characterizations lol
Lemme know if you have any requests, 'cause this was fun :)

Chapter 2: Six Years Old
“Tello?” the call is muffled from down the hall.
Donatello doesn’t answer, curling tighter in the dark corner between the end of their bed and the wall. The old gameboy propped on his bent knees has long since run out of charge, but he presses the buttons rhythmically anyway. It helps to keep his focus off the chaos of the projector in the TV room playing an old Lou Jitsu film. A faint roar echoes down the hall, followed by a peel of giggles and several thuds as no doubt some things are knocked about the room while his brothers act out their favorite scenes in tandem with the action star on the screen.
“You in here?” the voice is much closer now, just beyond the closed door.
Donnie presses the buttons faster, liking the feel of them as they bottom out and pop back up with soft cushiony clicks.
“Don~bon~” comes the next sing-song of his name.
A sigh escapes him, he hates that nickname. And Leo knows that he does. The door swings open and closed, briefly increasing the volume of the play noises and film from down the hall and making Donatello twitch.
“Donnie, c’mon!” the bed creaks as Leo crawls towards his sanctuary on noisy springs.
Each whine of rusty metal grates his ears and makes his brain ache with disgust. Donnie whimpers and lets the gameboy slide off his knees with a clatter in favor of covering his ears and closing his stinging eyes.
“Donnie?” Leo sounds worried now. A few moments later, his little face pops over the end, red stripes twisting with concern around his eyes as he notices his brother’s posture. “I’ma sit with ya, okay? Wait, lemme just--”
Struggling over the edge of the metal bed frame, he wiggles his little feet as he clumsily lowers himself down into Donatello’s little ‘go away corner’ as he and their other brothers have dubbed it. At the last minute, he slips and falls on his rump with a graceless yelp.
“Owie--” he rubs absently at the base of his shell, but quickly crawls on his hands and knees closer to his brother. His twin shuffles away as far into the corner as he can, eyes shut tight and breathing shaky as his hands continue to cover his ears.
Leo stops his approach, and instead mirrors his twin's position, leaning his carapace against the wall opposite from Donnie in the small space. He wraps his arms around his shins and rests his chin on his knees, legs stretching just enough so that his toes cautiously touch Donnie’s. When his touch is not rejected, he speaks again in a whisper.
“It’s it gross feels time?”
The quietness of Leo’s words encourages Donnie to remove his hands from his ears and he blinks away mistiness from his eyes. Rubbing an arm under his taped glasses, he nods before lowering it only enough to shove into his mouth and bite down.
"Hey, Dee,” Leo leans in close slowly, projecting his movements, and feels out the softshell’s arm where his brother’s beak is now closed around it, "Remember what Raphie says-- just the sleeve okay? Dun give yourself an owie, yeah?"
Donnie adjusts his bite and chews on the cotton of his hoodie sleeve with a nod, rotating his arm inside the fabric to show his brother he has not bitten into his skin. Leo's little chest rises and falls with a sigh of relief and he offers a gentle smile now that they are close.
"Hi," Leo whispers, tilting his head to get a better look at his twin’s eyes.
He doesn't reply except to stretch his toes until they are pushing against his brother’s lighter colored scales and wriggles them quickly. Leo jumps and giggles, squirming and pushing back playfully, but Donnie’s feet are not as ticklish as his twin so he just wriggles his own dark toes harder. It makes the ache in his chest less harsh whenever he can get Leo to laugh.
“N-No more! Don-- Donnie!!” Leo is breathless before Donnie shows him mercy, and simply curls their toes together without moving. The young slider leans back against the wall smiling wide as he catches his breath around one final giggle.
Donnie stares at his brother over the rim of his glasses, large brow creased and saying nothing as he continues to suck on the sleeve of his hoodie. It doesn’t matter. Leo always knows what he wants to say even when he can't find the words.
"I felt gross here,” Leo rubs a hand over his chest, “And when I looked up, ya weren't around anymore. I didn't want ya feeling bad by yourself... so I came to find ya. I followed my twin senses!"
Donnie scrunches his face up in annoyance, mumbling around his sleeve, "Wrr nuh tiinns."
Even though those are Leo's least favorite words, he brightens up at hearing Donnie's voice muffled as it is by the fabric in his mouth. He grins, and tips his head to the side, cupping his ear.
"What was that, twinny?"
"Y'era umm umm," Donnie continues to speak through teeth clenched around cotton. Sometimes when he bites down, it’s just hard to let go again.
"Huh? Sorry, twinsie. Try again later," his mischievous smile only grows at Don's glare. He settles his chin on his knees and goes quiet for a bit, curling his toes against Donnie’s absently.
"Wha’ happened?" He still speaks very softly, studying his twin intently. “Ya feel better now?”
Donnie thinks about it for a moment, then shrugs. He eyes the handheld console on the floor beside him. Leo follows his gaze, reaching forward for it.
It lay face down on the floor, revealing its many dents and cracks. Papa had picked it out of the trash for them, but it hadn’t been working. That is until Donnie opened it up and messed around with the wiring and components. Papa sometimes gets upset when he finds Don using grown up tools, because he doesn’t realize Donnie is careful to look up all the instructions on how to use them first. He reads whole manuals on the fritzy ipad he has to share, even for tools they don’t even own-- yet-- but Papa gets less mad when Donnie uses only manual tools so he tries to stick to those.... When Papa can see him at least.
Leo turns the console face up and tries the power button, getting nothing but a blank screen, not even a blip of power from it. Scrunching his nose, he smacks it against his palm a bit.
“It’s it broke?” the little slider asks, looking up at his brother again, “That got you sad?”
“Nn p’wer,” Donnie mumbles, but doesn’t offer the full truth of why he cannot just recharge it. Mikey had chewed through the power cord last night, and Donnie had not figured out a solution for a replacement yet. Nor had he managed what remained of the precious charge wisely enough to make it last until he could. He squeezes his toes around Leo’s to distract him and gets another slight giggle.
Leo pushes against his feet then pulls free, sitting cross-legged and leaning forward to study him. Red scales shift as his eyes narrow, “Ya always yell at Raphie and me when we break something, but.... If it’s Mikey ya never say.”
Donnie shifts his eyes away and just chews his sleeve. Shaking his head, Leo heaves a dramatic sigh and throws his arms and head back.
“No fair! Twins should get special perception from Donnie getting mad!”
He pulls his soggy sleeve away from his mouth and automatically corrects, “Exemption.”
Leo leans back on his hands and grins at him wide and victorious, “So you do think we’re twins?”
“Not what I said,” Donnie shakes his head.
“Same deference!”
“Difference. And that doesn’t even make grammatical sense.”
“Whahuh? Too many big words, Dee.”
Donnie sighs and rests his cheek on a bony knee.
“Wanna go back to the movie?” his brother suggests gently.
He shakes his head, motioning vaguely around his ears, “Too much.”
Leo nods, tapping his fingers on the ground, “Mmm... wanna pull all the cords in da house and see if any fit the gameboy?”
Adjusting his glasses, he says nothing at first, wheels turning, “I don’t think any will fit... but--”
“Bet ya can make one to fit with what we gots,” Leo finishes his thought waggling his brows.
Donnie gives him a crooked smile as he stands, “What are we waiting for?”
Leo accepts his hand up with a scheming smirk, “I’ll distract Raphie!”
Perhaps Leo is not his twin, but his brother always knows exactly how to inspire him back out of his go away corner.

A/N: I write Donnie as being on the Autistic spectrum, and how I chose to reflect that is drawn from personal experience but may not be representative of all who are on the spectrum.

And now for an actual Hallmark Christmas movie about lesbians.
Friends and Family Christmas:
Tumblr media
Spoilers below the cut:
Compared to the Tello Films versions of Christmas-y romcoms, this movie has the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster. Also, there are no horse farms to be seen.
For this movie, we have our two protagonists:
Daniella and Amelia.
Daniella is half Hispanic (ikr?) and she’s moved to New York to follow her photography dreams. Her mom is a super famous author and her dad is a mathematician. Daniella has always come home for Christmas, but she’s in charge of a series of big events for the Brooklyn Art Something or Other (I don’t remember the exact name. It was some sort of non-profit incubator for artists).
Amelia is a high powered lawyer who’s about to be named as a partner at her dad’s big corporate law firm. She actually has a good relationship with her father. He’s supportive of her desire to be a partner and concerned that she’s working too much, so he forces her to come to the firm’s Christmas party. Clearly, she’s going to need a plus one.
Turns out Amelia’s dad and Daniella’s dad were college roommates. Obvious the solution to these two workaholics working too much is to set them up with each other. Amelia, of course, is still getting over her ex even though they broke up a year ago.
So Amelia and Daniella have coffee and they vaguely hit it off but they’re never going to see each other again. They’re both too busy and Amelia is still wounded.
Then surprise! Daneilla’s parents have decided to come visit her for Christmas!
Now, Amelia accidentally took Daniella’s gloves when they had their first coffee, so they meet to exchange gloves. Aaaaannnnnd Daniella’s parents crash their coffee. This leads to the movie’s driving trope: fake dating. After all, what’s the best way to get your parents off your back about your lack of social life? That’s right, invent one!
Fake dating shenanigans ensue. I won’t tell you about them because you should go watch the movie. The movie is adorable. Also, Daniella’s mom apologizes for not respecting her boundaries, which might have been the most surprising part of the whole movie. Also, no one moves home to the Christmas tree farm. Everyone who started the movie living in New York ends the movie living in New York. And everybody keeps their careers. And the main characters support each other in their ambitions without anyone really sacrificing anything.
It’s almost like they took all of those criticisms of Hallmark movies and tried to fix them. Or some of them. I mean, it’s still a Hallmark movie.
Anyway, bottom line: I enjoyed it and if you like cute little movies about people falling in love, you should go watch it.

As someone who writes across multiple genres (romance, science fiction, thriller, etc), and who always tells other writers that genre isn't as important as story/characters and readers WILL follow you to unfamiliar territory if you give them a reason to trust you... I really enjoy the fact that the first two books I've had adapted are a crime fantasy drama about a cop who hunts demons, and a sweet, quiet romance set in the country. It really shows range. 😁
And just a reminder you can see Static Space (the second one, the sweet quiet romance based on my novel Can You Hear Me) on YouTube for free! Like, comment, share as the kids say.
(Also Riley Parra is available on Tello Films (with a subscription, for the full uncut experience) and for free on Plex (edited into a movie).

Ayahuasca: Música para cine de Luis David Aguilar (1978-1983) {Essential Sounds collection} by Luis David Aguilar
"Ayahuasca: Music for Film, by Luis David Aguilar (1978-1983)" compiles works by Luis David Aguilar, one of the most prolific composers of film scores in Peru. It shows the great versatility and avant-garde style that has distinguished his work. Luis David Aguilar (Arequipa, 1950) occupies a fundamental place in the history of film music in Peru, not only because of the prolific nature of his work (which also includes music for television and advertising), but because of the singular, experimental style found in many of his scores. Aguilar's music blends modern academic composition with the use of native instruments, synthesizers, sound collages and a diversity of resources, which identify him as a key figure to understand a period of Peruvian music marked by the imprint of the avant-garde and the use of native sounds, which developed during the late 70's and the early 80's. Aguilar belongs to the so called “Generation of the 70's”, along with Peruvian composers such as Walter Casas, Seiji Asato and Aurelio Tello, who were then immersed in the languages of contemporary classical music. But he also shares the spirit of renewal of a generation of musicians who came from the world of jazz and electronic experimentation such as Manongo Mujica and Arturo Ruiz del Pozo. After his graduation from the National Music Conservatory, Luis David Aguilar studied at the Instituto Nacional de Teleducación, starting from 1976, which proved to be decisive. It allowed him to start a career as a composer of music for radio and television, and drove him away from the classical scene. With this experience in hand, he was then able to produce film music and to work in many recording studios in Lima. He also set up his own studio and, as a result, he is the owner of a large archive of recordings, which has been maintained without being published. “During those years I composed a lot of music: children's songs, jingles for various radio shows, as well as music for television series, etc.”, says Aguilar. “The great attraction for me was that all of the music I created was recorded immediately, and because of my academic training, I was able to write scores for symphonic orchestra. My purpose was to introduce the sounds of classical instruments in the auditory memory of a vast audience. I had never experienced this possibility before. As an academic composer, I created works that were rarely performed. Most of them gathered dust in different places or, because of my lack of order and frequent relocations, they simply got lost. But during this period, all of the music I wrote came to life. I was also able to work with different recording studios and use their fantastic technical resources. In addition, this situation allowed me to create job opportunities for classically trained musicians (who at that time were very poorly paid). Over any other consideration, this had a clear social function, and the experience was totally worthy for me. In large measure, this is why I stopped working in academic settings.” Ayahuasca is an album that collects pieces from 1978 to 1983 and offers an overview of the different musical paths that Aguilar followed during his career as a soundtrack composer. The album opens with music from the film El viento del ayahuasca [The Wind of Ayahuasca] (1983), by director Nora de Izcue, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and Choir of Cuba under the baton of Luis David Aguilar, with Chucho Valdés on piano. Recorded at the ICAIC studios (Cuba), it is an ambitious orchestral and vocal composition, in which you can hear the beginning of the famous melody of “Mujer Hilandera” [Female Weaver], popularized by the Amazonian cumbia group Juaneco y su Combo, which serves as an introduction to the sound world of the jungle, a dense and hypnotic atmosphere that, without a doubt, places this work as one of the most important compositions of the author's repertoire. The next track is the music for the documentary Anónimo cotidiano [Anonymous Everyday] (1979), by director Jorge Rey, a unique experimental piece for synthesizers (played by Aguilar), drums and percussion (played by Manongo Mujica), with the addition of various Andean instruments (panpipes, charango, among others). It is a clear example of fusion of sound experimentation and timbres from the Andean world. And finally Los constructores [The Builders] (1978), by director José Carlos Huayhuaca, a salsa which incorporates unusual sounds of tubular bells and prepared pianos. About this diversity of genres, the composer says: “Creating film music gave me a wide perspective, because of the possibility of using all the composition techniques that I studied, both traditional and avant-garde, and even inventing some of my own, in addition to giving me the versatile craft that is needed”. Ayahuasca: Music for Film by Luis David Aguilar (1978-1983) is the second album by Aguilar released by Buh Records, following the celebrated Hombres de Viento/Venas de la Tierra (1978-1982), appeared in 2015. The album is published in vinyl format, in a limited edition of 300 copies, as part of the Essentials Sounds collection. It includes a booklet with notes by Luis David Aguilar. The audio has been remastered from the original reel tapes by Aldo Montalvo. The artwork and design is by About Studio. This project was awarded with the Economic Stimulus for Culture 2021 of the Ministry of Culture of Peru. クレジット2022年9月23日リリース A-side Track 1: El viento del ayahuasca [The Wind of Ayahuasca] (1983) Length: 19:32 Performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and Choir of Cuba, conducted by Luis David Aguilar, with a brief piano solo by Chucho Valdés.
