#temporary hiatus pre-announcement

Text
bit of an announcement –– taking a holiday hiatus from hounds, because I need to do a bit of work on planning and I also really want to pre-write the next four chapters before I post them, bc turns out!  only writing at 2 am isn’t sustainable!  thank you all for your wonderful support and your patience, and I give you my word this is only temporary, because I am SO excited to write where I want this to go and I would actually rather perish than leave what is ostensibly my magnum opus unfinished.  ANYWAYS tl;dr hounds is on holiday for a bit, but in the meantime I'm writing a fluffy christmas dreamling fic that should be a vibe!!  thanks for sticking around :) <3

A Septic Love: Prologe
This is part one of a series called A Septic Love that one of my closest friends help me come up with due to our love for Jack and Mark. It’s going to be pure fluff for the most part. Enjoy!
Kathleen held the grey video camera in her hand while she fiddled with the buttons.  About two months ago, the Hispanic girl received an invite to join two YouTubers in Ireland to film some collaborations over a three month period.  Once plans were finalized and set into place, the last thing Kat had to do was make an announcement video and to explain her temporary hiatus. Placing the camera on her nightstand, she placed her self on her black bed sheets and began to record her message.
"Hey everyone, it's your favorite Kit-Kat! Well, I have some news. I am going over to Ireland for a couple months to be doing some collabs with two other YouTubers. So in my short hiatus, I have some pre-recorded videos that will go up while I'm gone. I will see you all next time, till then adios!" Her Cuban accent came out lightly through the video as usual.
A few hours of editing and uploading later, the black haired girl was heading out to the Uber that would take her to the airport. The phone in her hand was lit as she scrolled through her contacts. Once the picture of jacksepticeye came on the screen, Kat placed the phone to her ear and waited for the Irish man to pick up the call. "Hey, Kat."
"Hey Jack, I'm heading to the airport now. I'll see you in about ten hours."
"See you then. Have a safe flight Kit-Kat!"

Boyd Tinsley Set to “Take a Break” from DMB
Seeking “more balance in (his) life,” violinist Boyd Tinsley said Friday he’s going to “take a break” from the Dave Matthews Band.
The announcement came on the eve of DMB’s appearance at a pre-Super Bowl show - the second of two one-offs launching a comeback of sorts for DMB, which has been on hiatus since wrapping its 2016, 25th-anniversary tour. The group has a new album in the can and is planning to tour heavily in 2018; tickets for many of those concerts went on sale hours before Tinsley went public with his plans.
The violinist prefaced his bombshell by saying he’d been “wrestling with a decision” and had “an announcement to make” before issuing a longer, yet somewhat cryptic tweet.
”I need to take a break from the band and touring to focus on my family and my health for a while,” said Tinsley, who toured and recorded with Crystal Garden during DMB’s downtime and last week played with Bob Weir.
There’s no word on a replacement or whether Tinsley will perform this evening.
”I will miss you guys and my brothers in the band, but I’m somewhat worn out and need to spend more time with my family and to bring more balance to my life,” he wrote.
Tinsley has been with Dave Matthews Band since 1992. It’s unclear whether the split is temporary or permanent.

Life and Death

"Sorry to interrupt, George,” Laurie says, interrupting his story in the open area. The sun is setting on another clear blue day on Eden. There is a patch of milky white above their heads where McGregor had ripped open the dome and Horatio and Henry had patched it closed. “But I need to say something important to everyone.”
Soren is meditating with his face to the dome, but he turns around, blinking over his dreamy expression. The rest look up, intrigued and a little concerned.
Laurie takes an unsteady deep breath. “I just want to say that Henry Morgan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I let him down over and over, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he never forgives me. But I just thought it was important that I say this, out loud, to all of you... Because...” She looks like she doesn’t know why she is doing this. She looks to Henry, who is looking at his sculpture, but she can tell he’s listening.
“Keep going, girl!” Tina says.
“Well, I also put everyone in danger because I was obsessed with Mcgr-- with the reaper. I still know that there are people out there, but I’m sorry that I let that make me forget that I was putting everyone and the mission in danger. Especially you guys, Anna and Horatio. You don’t have clones, and if you had died, I would... Well, I don’t know what I would do. I hope you can forgive me one day.”
“Ahh!” Horatio says, standing. Laurie tenses, fight or flight. “You didn’t do it on purpose! I’m sorry I’ve been giving you such a hard time.” He grips Laurie in a rough hug.
“Thanks, Horatio...” Laurie says.
“I need some time, just because it really scared me and Fate,” Anna says. “But I know you never meant to hurt anyone, and you saved my life. I just need some time.”
Laurie nods. She continues to stand there, now not saying anything.
“Anything else you need to get off your chest?” George says.
“Uhh,” Laurie says. “No. Thank you for hearing me.” She begins toward her room.
“Do you want to stay for the story?” George says.
Laurie turns back around. “Um,” she says. Everyone looks welcoming. “Yeah, sure.”
And so they listen to George’s rendition of Lord of the Rings, a crowd favorite. Fate plays among them, asks questions, calls everyone Aunt or Uncle so-and-so.
“Why do the elves leave?” Fate asks, now pre-teen. “Why don’t they help? Aren’t they, like, immortal?”
“Uhh!” Soren says. “Because if they fight then they become the very thing they hate. They are too good for Middle Earth, and they have to leave it in order to stay that way.”
“I think you can fight for what’s right and stay good, Uncle Soren,” Fate says.
“Excuse me, little girl, but who in this room is a philosopher?” Soren says.
“Soren, are you done?” George says.
“Yes!” Soren says. “Just, you know, let’s not make blanket statements about entire races of people is all I’m saying.”
George continues. Fate sticks her tongue out at Soren and Soren sticks his tongue out back.
That night, Laurie knocks on George’s door. He pulls the door open. “Hi Laurie.” Anna has pulled her own bed in the room and made a little bed for Fate as well. “When can I have my own room?” Fate says, settling in.
“You can have mine if you want,” Anna says. “I forget how old you’re getting.”
“Can we talk, George?” Laurie says, not looking at him, but at Fate. He follows her gaze and seems to know what she wants to talk about. “Sure,” he says, closing the door behind him.
“I’m going to try,” Laurie says once they are out of ear-shot.
“Laurie, thank you...”
“The chances are really low, George,” Laurie says. “I just want to be clear about that. But I’m going to recruit Soren and Henry and see what we can all come up with.”
“Are you and Henry talking?” George asks.
“That question makes me uncomfortable coming from you-- Anyway, I’m going to work on that as well.”
George nods. “Thank you.”
The next day, Laurie approaches Henry. He appears pleased. “Can I ask you to meet with Soren and me?”
“Yeah,” he says. He puts his sculpture down and follows her to Soren and Laurie’s lab.
“Soren, are you busy?” Laurie says, opening the door.
“No, just had an idea meditating and was going over some old notes. What’s up?”
“I have a mission for the three of us,” she says, gesturing to Henry entering the room. “As you know, Fate has not had been cured of aging. George has asked if I can do it here, and I’m pretty sure it can’t be done...”
Henry nods. Soren says, “Good pep talk so far.”
“Shut up,” Laurie says. “Watching her grow up, I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t at least try. Soren, I need to bounce ideas off of you and I need you to process my ideas and thoughts and help me come up with workarounds and experiments. Henry, I don’t even know how half of the shit I used to use in my lab, but I’m going to do my best to describe it to you and hopefully you can make something similar enough to have it work. Questions?”
Soren raises his hand. Laurie laughs, “Soren?”
“Is George aware of how low the chances are that we can do this?”
“I tried to impress that on him, yes,” she says. “Henry, the first thing I’m going to need is a centrifuge and some needles to draw Fate’s blood. Do you think you can make something like that?”
He nods. “It might be a little medieval...”
“Good enough is good enough,” Laurie says.
“That’ll be our team motto,” Soren says.
“Perfect,” Laurie says. “Then our team name will be team Fate.”
They work quietly with one another, occasionally asking questions and discussing and defining limitations.
That night, Laurie lies awake. Finally, she gets up and walks out into the open area, bare feet. She scampers across the cold floor and to Henry’s door. Just as she’s about to knock, it opens.
“Laurie!” he says, hushed.
“Henry... where are you going?”
“I, uh...” he says, “well, I was actually coming to see you.”
She smiles, surprised by the tears coming to her eyes. “I wanted to see you, but I wasn’t sure you wanted to see me.”
He steps back and opens his door. “Do you want to come in?”
“I’m really sorry, Henry,” she says, sitting on his bed.
“It’s OK, you’ve done enough,” he says. He sits next to her.
Looking at her hands, she says, “Did it hurt you?”
Henry unbuttons the top of his shirt to reveal purple scars across his chest. “Anna treated it well. Looks worse than it is...”
Laurie puts her fingers on the scars. “I’m sorry.”
They sit in silence together for a long moment. “I told you, you’ve done enough...”
Their breathing deepens. When Laurie finally looks up from his chest, Henry kisses her.
The next day, they can’t keep their hands off one another. Henry has his ring back on. The rest of the group’s mood seems lighter, too. In the afternoon, they sit next to one another, holding hands, while George continues with his story.
“I don’t see why the trees won’t just help!” Fate says.
“Ohhhh, here we go,” Soren says. “First of all, they aren’t trees....”
And so a pattern is established. Laurie’s days are filled with spending time with the group, and working with team Fate. They avoid talking about team Fate in front of Fate. “It’s best if Anna and George are the ones to tell her when they think she’s ready,” Laurie says.
“This might be the longest a human has ever gone without realizing that everyone dies,” Soren says. “I feel sorry for her.”
Laurie shrugs. “This is uncharted territory and I’m not pretending to know what the right thing to do here is...”
After a few months, the rains return. At first, Laurie is afraid that McGregor will return with them, but she is never outside at night, and she never hears the thump of him on the dome. Somehow, she knows that he knows that he showed her the thing she needed to see. She also knows--and has known deep down for about a month, but just wasn’t ready to check--that she’s pregnant again.
When she begins to show, she feels it is time. “I want to tell you first, of course,” she says one night in Henry’s room. She’s nervous. He nods knowingly. “Uh-huh...” he says. “I’m pregnant!” She looks at him. “You knew!” She jumps into his arms and they laugh.
“I’m pregnant!” Laurie announces to the group the next afternoon. They party that night, and George whips out more potato vodka for everyone except Laurie.
They fall into a routine.
“When is it going to come out?” Fate asks, hands on Laurie’s belly.
“Soon!” Laurie says. “That’s your cousin in there.”
Fate’s eyes are huge.
The birth is a nightmare without many comforts. But Henry is there the whole time. Fate is highly interested in the process, but terrified of Laurie’s screaming. She peeks around the corner. Anna and Tina are brining towels and encouraging Laurie to breathe and push at various times.
It’s a boy. “I’d like to name him Jon, after my Dad, if you don’t mind.”
“Jon Morgan?” Henry says. “I like it.”
Laurie loves being a mother. Team Fate is put on a temporary hiatus, at least until Laurie weens the baby.
Fate is usually around, wanting to just see the baby. She’s a teenager now.
“I can’t believe that came out of you...” she says.
“One day you might do the same,” Laurie says.
“Ew!” She laughs.
Laurie laughs and then becomes lost in thought. The girl is learning about new life, but she doesn’t know about death yet. How strange.
“Earth to Laurie!” Fate says. “What are you thinking about even?”
Laurie smiles. “How much you’ve grown!”
Fate rolls her eyes and walks away.
Life goes on and the children play with one another. When Jon is finally old enough to be fed smashed up potatoes, Laurie feels that she can let Tina and Anna help out more. Team Fate--and now Jon--are back to work.
Laurie is absolutely determined to cure the children of death.

Nu’est and Topp Dogg/Xeno-T for new fans
I’m not sure if anyone has done this yet, but I’ve noticed a lot of people starting to get into groups that had members on Produce 101. So I’ve decided to put together a list of music videos and other videos from the groups, so you can get to know them.
And just incase you aren’t sure what songs to start with; I, Jae, personally suggest Good Bye Bye by Nu’est and Arario by Topp Dogg. Yet, Hae, the other writer on our blog, suggest Love Paint by Nu’est and The Beat by Topp Dogg.
Also if you notice I accidentally put the wrong video on any link, then please tell me so I can fix it. If you can think of a video I didn’t include you feel must be added, then feel free to message it to us.
Also just a note, most of the videos I linked are English subbed, but if needed you should be able to find the subs in other languages using Youtube.
Also I doubt it would happen, but please don’t copy this and post it else where claiming it is your own.

In Regards to the Delays
Hey guys!
First and foremost, thank you to all y'all. The amount of attention Beyond the Vault has gotten has blown my mind (we're nearing 1,300 views), and I really appreciate all the reviews y'all have given. It's really helped me stay motivated to write.
As y'all have probably noticed, BTV hasn't been updated in a hot minute. It's been a month and a half since the last chapter was posted. For those of y'all who've been reading from the beginning, you might notice that everything after chapter 8 is gone right now too. I'm sure there will be some annoyance (maybe even anger) with this decision, but I'm reworking the story following Margo's departure for the Institute.
My reasoning for this is pretty straightforward; while I've had the whole story outlined since about chapter 3 or 4, I'm realizing that it's not working the way I want, mostly with the story arc involving Xara (the woman MacCready left Davenport with, if y'all don't remember).
I've been encouraged to simply write her off, but at this point that's going to be nearly impossible. To do that, I'd have to push out a few more chapters with her in order to give her death any significance - and given that I can't bring myself to even finish one chapter with her, over the course of a month and a half, I don't want to take that route. It's a lot of work and a like of time for an arc that I'm not enjoying and just isn't right.
She was also only there to serve as a temporary fling for Mac, just to cause drama with Margo. Xara is a character I've put a lot of work into, and I've taken a lot of time developing her personality and backstory as an OC; I feel that throwing her into this story for the reasons I did is a waste of her potential, and while she'll make appearances in other stories, I think it's best that she doesn't appear in this - at least not in the same way she had before I decided to rework the story.
Tumblr media
In other news, I want to announce that this story is only one part of the series!
Some of y'all may have noticed that I have two other fics on my FFN profile, both on hiatus for rewrites: Children of the Vault, and Snake Charmer. Children of the Vault will be a prequel to Beyond the Vault, focusing on the events that went down in Vault 75. It'll be shorter, maybe around ten chapters.
I also plan to write two more spin-offs. Alma Lancaster, one of the main characters in Children of the Vault, will be getting a spin-off set in 2287. I'm in the process of outlining it, but Beyond the Vault is my main focus at the moment.
The other spin-off I'm planning focuses on James. Those of y'all who read before I removed chapters 9-14 know him already, but for those of you who don't, he's also in Children of the Vault. In this, we'll get to see how he ended up in Davenport, Iowa and how he and Prim met. This story is in the pre-outlining stages, which for me really means that while I'm developing a plot, I'm not actually putting it on paper yet because I'm still working on the major plotpoints. It's a story I want to tell, but I'm still working out how to tell it.
TL;DR:
Beyond the Vault's last 5 chapters are being cut due to the fact that I can't make them work as-is. Y'all will be getting rewrites, and they'll be coming soon! I know this is frustrating for current readers, but I'd rather be able to finish the story and enjoy it than not be able to put out any more chapters because of the stuff listed above.
I'm sorry for the trouble, but I think this is the best direction for the story right now. I hope y'all aren't too upset to stay tuned for the changes ♥

Film Festival Frontiers
Tumblr media
“We want as big an audience Australia-wide as possible as this is our contribution to pushing back against COVID-19.”
The best anyone can do right now is keep each other busy at home. For some this means sharing a movie with friends; for others, it means making that happen.
“We were gutted that this iconic year in the life of BOFA should be cancelled and so we looked around to find a solution” continued Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival Director Owen Tilbury. “We reached out to our distributors and asked if they would join us online; all of them said it was a good idea and most have been able to offer films and we’ve searched the archives for some great BOFA Retrospectives.”
“The difference between watching movies and being at a Film Festival is conversation. The conversations in a queue while waiting for a film and the conversations after a film. An online Festival needs to keep the conversations going and we will. We have created 9 Conversation opportunities online via Zoom; there is a tenth Anniversary online celebration and seven film Conversations mostly referencing COVID-19 and our reactions to it. And of course a closing night party – it’s all about connections.”
To be staged online via streaming platform Dacast over three weekends commencing May 1, crucial to BOFA emerging freely accessible was sponsorship via corporate partners and the Tasmanian Government. With most Film Festivals managed by volunteers who depend entirely on short term revenue to stage a Film Festival or buttress a run against personal liability for a net loss, Federal and State Government intervention and lack thereof has proved critical in Directors determining whether Festivals can run at all. With volunteers nationwide fairly occupied with confirming personal and primary sources of income divorced from Festivals, for those lacking technical expertise and/or resources the absence of financial intervention has and will prove prohibitive.
Another free yet entirely self-funded platform, Static Vision will this Friday manage their fourth weekly interactive live-stream. Dedicating the collective to delivering the events free of charge, the organisers have asked for donations where possible and encouraged patrons to purchase custom e-motes for use in the group chats which on average have attracted over 100 simultaneous viewers.
“We’ve had a great response to our online live-stream events so far and are excited to continue our experiment for the foreseeable future; we have a few huge announcements to make over the coming weeks and are very excited to share them once all the details are finalised,” said Static Vision Co-Founder Felix Hubble. “Being able to interact with some of our viewers in real-time in a casual, virtual setting has been a big plus.”
“We’ll try to keep our events frequent (weekly, if possible) and will continue to approach a diverse range of filmmakers, performers and other industry figures who aren’t generally accessible to Australian audiences for interactive Q+As and other conversations, alongside our curated shorts programs and feature screenings, to tide us over until physical cinema spaces are open again. “
Too critical to cinemas and Film Festivals recurring in 2020 (and indeed running in subsequent years) are the extent to which Government relief and most necessarily JobKeeper payments can support continued exhibition. It’s not simply a matter of relaxing the financial strain for organisations and individuals (volunteer or not) so the latter, whether the impact be related to their Festival or wholly personal, can manage. Moreover, it’s about maintaining the organisations’ structures of personnel, ensuring these institutions do not fold and can indeed propel future programs beyond those immediately shelved.
With access to the payment restricted to those who have worked for an employer for longer than 12 months “on a regular and systematic basis,” the current legislation does not account for many of these casual employees in the Festival space. Given Festival employment is often sporadic, seasonal and spread across multiple forums, numerous devotees will not meet the criteria following amendments to extend funding to freelance workers and establish a package for the arts sector’s recovery being defeated in Federal Parliament.
The status quo has too affected many in the film industry who routinely rely on freelance commitments who, alongside temporary visa holders, many of whom rely on the Festival circuit, do not stand to benefit from the JobKeeper subsidy. Cinemas, a number of which manage Festivals intrinsically tied to the venue, will neither be able to immediately distribute the JobKeeper amounts to needful employees as requested and to be subsequently reimbursed by the Federal Government given ticket revenue has halted and the payments won’t be forthcoming from Canberra for weeks.
“While we’ll be hit in box office, we’ve been as pro-active as we can be in responding to COVID and I feel we’re taking a leading and positive position nationally,” said Revelation Film Festival Director Richard Sowada. “We’re utlising every resource we have to be of service to the entire screen sector and community where we can and refuse to be paralysed.”
“Our immediate response includes developing an online festival which will hopefully take place over our traditional July dates, developing film production initiatives across organisations to provide work and output and initiating an ongoing series of online talks and workshops analysing all sectors of production, distribution and exhibition. These will be rolling out within 3 weeks.”
Revelation, which has rescheduled its Perth-based run to September, are also seeking out WA filmmakers in an effort to highlight their work and sustain artists through the crisis.
“We’ve built a WA section of our own streaming portal REVonDEMAND to support the exhibition of locally developed content,” continued Richard. “We’re adding 6 new international titles per month to that portal and we’ll be building talks and Q&As with filmmakers internationally around them.”
Revelation’s advents come at the time of, following the postponement or cancellation of several dozen Fests, the Melbourne International Film Festival’s August cancellation in days past; the first in MIFF’s sixty-nine years. Far from a surprise yet no less a disappointment to thousands of casual and dedicated film fans alike, the emphasis on and reliance by the Festival and its ilk on major titles and pre-releases via distributors adverse to piracy and consequentially online exhibition has meant that such forums, or at least much of the material they’re accustomed to distributing, have not immediately transitioned online.
A Night of Horror, having planned a return to the indie and genre Film Festival circuit in May following a hiatus, are exploring opportunities for streaming segments prior to a planned resumption of the Festival later in 2020.
“We’re not going entirely virtual as most filmmakers have issues with piracy and copyright,” said A Night of Horror’s Craig Walker, noting that prospective digital outlets are typically designed for promoting clips and trailers rather than showcasing completed works.
“I do indeed want to see the shorts program streamed for those who cannot make the screened session, as well as the TV/Web program.”
With avenues like MIFF too constrained by the practical and security limitations of placing something even close to the scale of customary operations online, Melbourne’s dedicated ‘open-mic’ film collective Filmonik pulled off a first by utilising broadcast, video, chat and streaming software between multiple sites, with the New South Wales sister cell too hosting a novel screening.
“This was our first time live-streaming Kino Sydney without an audience,” said Kino co-coordinator Bryan Fisher. “As expected, there were a lot of technical problems but the films themselves were fantastic as always and the online audience were very supportive, which was extremely uplifting for us. It was fantastic to see some films were made in isolation and we hope to see more during our next live-stream. As our next screening falls on May 4th, we fully expect Star Wars themed isolation films.”
“We’re super happy with the result of our forced transition from a lively screening party at Loop bar to a live-stream show shot in a living room with housemates – our regular screenings are quite warm and loose so broadcasting from a couch wasn’t going to throw the vibe off too much,” said Filmonik co-ordinator Olivier Bonenfant. “The biggest bonus was having viewers from different countries and from sister group Kino Sydney.”
The highlights of the night included an opening ode to isolation (a personal favourite of this author) and a closing flick dedicated to Melbourne’s great outside, with the next screening scheduled for April 28.
“Our main principles stayed intact; we kept the open-mic/open-screen non-competitive format with a lineup picked at random during the show and without real curation (with surprisingly great results month after month),” said Olivier. “Interviews with filmmakers were a priority and I was amazed that nearly everyone made it to their interview with only one instruction email sent 2 days before.”
“It wasn’t the tightest show ever overall but I think it made some of us feel close to each other in this period of isolation. It’s this presence that’s important and we were all able to share a great evening of short films and be as passionate about it as ever. I’ll be thrilled to be back in the world with the rest of the team soon(?) but for now the novelty of it makes it fun.“
Seeking to bring patrons and the industry together, the Gold Coast Film Festival just concluded its six-day online Shorts in Paradise Film Festival (SIPFest) with a filmmaker cash prize set to be conferred in light of an audience poll. Following the cancellation of the traditional April run, the GCFF Screen Industry Gala Awards will too nonetheless be granted tonight and streamed (for free) online.
The SCINEMA International Science Film Festival, set for June, are likewise preparing to deliver this year’s run digitally and with an extended playlist. Having too placed a range of features and shorts dating back to SCINEMA 2016 in the Festival’s accessible archive, SCINEMA joins Lorne Film and numerous Festivals in showcasing, recommending or otherwise highlighting previous programs’ fixtures online.
The Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival, previously scheduled to take place in July, will actually be reaching audiences sooner via hosting a virtual screening of the appropriately titled The Show Must Go On (featured image), free of charge, on April 30. Conveniently covering the matter of wellness in the creative industry, CDFF, joining many other Fests in reckoning with the centrality of conversation and togetherness in the Festival experience and no less in this time of isolation, will be featuring a Q&A and discussion with the filmmakers following the movie.
Streaming of one’s own volition, something many have available to us via Stan, Netflix and else can be a joy, but not near so much as being told to switch off our mobiles or even hear someone speaking too loudly absent, for so many, being close to any other. There’s something greater in watching something, anything together and it’s not just having to focus the mind knowing that it will only be before us for a while, but knowing it’s enhanced by every grunt, cheer, or even silence accentuating our best and sometimes lesser stories.
We miss that, and these spaces not just bringing but fostering communities online that may only grow when this is all over are providing a service needed now more than in many viewers’ living memories. Another seeking same is Monster Fest and having screened its first weekly feature this Friday past, the crew will revisit some horror upon us this coming weekend. This author tuned in for The Windmill Massacre and bumping into a friend in the group chat I hadn’t seen in some time was no small joy – we’re catching another flick this Sunday.
“In the last few years Fangoria x Monster Fest has created a very tight-knit community around our theatrical releases and regular event screenings across Australia; the horror and genre community in Australia is extremely passionate and connected so with that in mind our aim with the Friday Fright Night online screenings is to bring a sense of community back to watching films to fill the void created by the cinema closures,” said Monster Fest’s Grant Hardie. “With these screenings we are looking to engage our audience to interact and share the online viewing experience in a live situation. They’ll feature talent intro’, Q&As and other specialised content all designed to give the audience a unique and interactive experience from the comfort of their homes and connect with each other .”

In late November, I posted here about the fact that, in the wake of the fire, as much as it pained me to do so, I would have to cancel the annual Vintage Secret Santa, as it was simply impossible for us to conduct as usual under the circumstances. I announced such with a heavy heart, but took solace in the fact that hopefully it's a fun tradition that we'll be able to revive again here in future years. Little did I know that more than a month before I penned that post, my good friend Barbara (one of the tiniest handful of fellow vintage lifestylers to be had here in the Okanagan region of British Columbia) and Tony had teamed up for what proved to genuinely be one the biggest and most incredibly heartwarming surprises of my entire life. Together they had taken it upon themselves to contact all those who took part in 2015's VSS to let them know about the situation (re: the fire, VSS being cancelled, etc) and to suggest to past participants, if they were so interested, that they could send me a VSS holiday season gift instead of the usual swap between randomly assigned partners. Mind blowingly sweet of them, I know. From late October to December 24th, I was completely in the dark about this incredibly thoughtful act - including the fact that Barbara and her husband (also a vintage lifestyler himself) were super kindly allowing their house to be used as the address to which participants in what had been dubbed "Jessica's Vintage Secret Santa" (complete with a private Facebook group of the same name) could send their gifts. On a snowy, yet sunny, bracingly nippy Christmas Eve afternoon, Tony and I went over to Barbara and Jeff's house for what I thought was simply going to be a terrific holiday season visit with dear friends. You can imagine my profound surprise then, when a few minutes into our get together, Barbara informed me that a sizeable pile of presents nestled beneath one of their Christmas trees was in fact for me/us and proceeded to let me in on the details of how that came to be and the incredible surprise that had been organized on my behalf. Tears (of joy), shock, trembling, and gigantic smiles all proceeded on my end as I sat on their (gorgeous mid-century) couch in total disbelief. I am one of those people who tries never to take anything for granted and who is grateful for every single kind thing done towards/for me, so to know that ore than thirty past VSS participants - some of whom had already, extremely generously, sent care packages our way in the wake of the blaze - had teamed up to give me/us the Christmas surprise to end all Christmas surprises was nothing short of overwhelmingly beautiful in the very best kind of way. I opened some of the gifts that were sent at Barbara's house and then we loaded up the remainder in our vehicle and I unwrapped them as time would permit over the next few holiday season days. Genuinely, I am still at a loss for words and cannot, really and truly, begin to thank Barbara and Jeff, Tony, and all those involved enough for their profound kindness, love and desire to help give us not just a "good", but a remarkably wonderful holiday season shortly after we lost everything last fall. Thank you with all of my heart to each and every person who sent a VSS present our way. Some folks included items for Tony and/or Annie as well and we are so appreciative to everyone for their staggering generosity and compassion – as well as to Barbara (pictured below) who worked tirelessly for weeks to help make this surprise a reality. Much as with the other (non-VSS related) care packages that we've received, you - our dear friends and fellow members of the vintage community - are helping us to rebuild our home and wardrobes (most of which, for example, the festive outfit I'm wearing in these photos, was created from) to no small degree and we are endlessly appreciate to every single person who has sent anything our way over the past nearly three months now since the fire. Thank you today, tomorrow, and always. You truly gave me an unforgettable and magnificently positive holiday season. I will never forget it as long as I live and sincerely hope that we can revive the group based VSS for 2017 and beyond, so that all those who wish to do so can send and receive gifts themselves, too. {And a shot of Picasso, Barbara and Jeff's adorable cat, who was such a good kitty - never once laying a paw on the presents piled 'round the Christmas tree.} House hunting As many of you know, we were very fortunate to find a temporary home quite quickly after the fire, moving into our current digs precisely one month to the day since that fateful night. As it is indeed a short term rental though, the quest to find something (hopefully!!!) more permanent has begun this month and we've already been into view some places. The real estate market - both from renting and home buying perspectives - has utterly skyrocketed in terms of pricing here in the Okanagan over the past few years (it's not uncommon for houses to go for 25 - 50+ % more today than they did less than a decade ago) and what little does exist - especially that permits dogs - at a quasi-decent price is snapped up faster than you can say "sold". We're working with a modest budget and have certain housing needs that must be met, but are certainly trying to be as flexible as possible and do believe that a good match will come our way before we need to leave our temporary rental house. At the time of the fire we were living in Penticton, in the heart of the Okanagan, which is one of the local areas with the steepest housing costs, so while it is certainly included in our hunt, we have cast a relatively wide net of about three hours in various directions and are diligently searching high and low throughout. I (we) will definitely be sharing the good news when we do find our next place and hope that such will happen at least fairly quickly. Please keep your fingers crossed for the three of us. Hospital time again This coming Tuesday, I'll be going into the hospital again for (thankfully, quite minor) surgery once again. Usually I don't even bring up such small procedures, which are part and parcel to my life as a multiple chronic illness fighter, here, but as I know such will have a further impact on my ability to be online in the coming weeks, I wanted to mention it today with all of you. Rest assured that this procedure has nothing to do with the fire. It was booked back in mid-August 2016 and should - knock wood - be something that only takes a few weeks to recover from. In general though, my health has taken one heck of a serious beating in the aftermath of the fire. Initially I was quite literally getting through each day on a combination on adrenaline, shock and sheer grit, but as more time went on, greater than usual (for me) levels of physical activity persisted, and the continued emotional impact of what had happened to us really started to hit home, my health took a massive nose dive from which it has not really begun to improve (to my pre-fire levels, I mean). It remains to be seen just to what extent this situation will have on my life and blogging (which, officially, remains on hiatus for the time being) in the long run. I will of course continue to let you guys know here and am trying to give myself as much time to rest and recoup as circumstances will permit (which, to be frank, isn't always a great deal). Project 365 photo challenge My health, rebuilding our lives, house hunting, and recently the holiday season have been/are at the heart of our lives right now and will continue to be for quite some time to come.   In the midst of such though, I thought it would be fun to *try* and do a Project 365 iPhone photo a day challenge over on Instagram. I've taken the approach of pairing each Project 365 image that I share with a quote that fits, to my mind, the image and welcome you to follow me there, if you're not already doing so, to see what I share. Though, back in 2011, I tried to blog here every day of the year (in an experiment that I called Vintage 365), I've not done a Project 365 before with photos and love that it gives me a chance to share more of my world - the natural beauty of the Okanagan Valley very much included - with all those who tune into my Instagram account. It will be fascinating to look back at the end of 2017 and witness what really caught my eye each day throughout 2017 (I should point out that, naturally, I do plan to share other none #project365 snaps there still, too).
♥ ♥ ♥
My dear, wonderful friends, as we embrace this first week of the new year, please know that I am grateful for each of you, your support, understanding, kindness, and generosity. Last year was a doozy for so many of us and Tony and I were, by no means, the only ones to face great hardship. The world in general was put through the ringer, too, and I'm sure that many of us share our immense happiness over the fact that 2017 is here at long last. Though none of us know what the future holds in store for us, I enter this year with steadfast optimism, determination and hope that it a better, safer, healthier, happier one for all of us. Thank you again for each unforgettable and poignant way that you've been there for us. Both myself and Tony want to wish you all a stellar New Year and look forward to connecting with you in whatever ways we can throughout the coming twelve months.
