"And you rip my ribcage open and devour what's truly yours"
Here we are, dear hearts, at the first truest anniversary of the release of The Horror and the Wild. An absolute masterpiece of an album that teaches us that we are capable of not only great fury and sadness, but beauty and kindness as well. I really looked into the meanings of flowers for this one, incorporating poppies, marigolds, and yarrow. Flowers that can represent anger and hurt, but also remembrance, passion, and healing. Anyway, here's my tribute to That Unwanted Animal by The Amazing Devil.

I’ve been listening to amazing devil for years now and even though I heard the songs hundreds of times, I still find something new in them.
In That unwanted animal I just noticed that after the line: “well, can’t you hear the scratching” there is a tiny scratching noise.
Or in Fair, which seems like it is sang fully by Joey, there is Madeleine whispering the line: “Where have you been” before “she’ll whisper” faintly with Joey. What a ridiculous attention to details!
Like who made these people that they decided to make songs this layered! 🥰
My favourite thing about That Unwanted Animal is how fucking obvious the narrator makes it that it's all going to end badly for them. The scratching at the door, which her lover can't hear. The Holofernes joke, which they just don't get. "What's the time Mr. Wolf?" when they're blind and bleating. The priest that they ignored. Every sign points towards the inevitable end. But all those signs? All those ignored warnings? They aren't a warning that the lover is in trouble. They're warning that the narrator is the one who's going to get hurt. The door shatters, letting the creature in whilst the lover grips her like an animal about to be speared, an open offering for the creature's attack. The lover is blind and bleating whilst bearing their claws for attack. Unable to see, who will they hit? The narrator, bound in their embrace and an easy target. Easy why? Because she is the God-child falling from the sky, an Icarus who ignored all the warnings that she herself gave. And knowing all this she begs, she pleads, "be good to me." And we all know how that ends.
That Unwanted Animal is, and always has been, my favourite TAD song (and dare I say it my favourite song period) so I wanted to make a drawing for it!
One of the perks of TAD's music is that they make you give meaning to it; to me this song is about trying desperately to keep a relationship that isn't meant to be, which leads to pent up resentment. I wanted to convey that deadly silent that comes right before blind rage idk
it took a lot longer than I thought it would (mostly because I took a couple-month-long break from working on it) but I finished it up last week! It abstractly represents most of the concepts, feelings, or imagery in the horror and the wild album. I’d be happy to describe my choices if anyone’s interested!
that unwanted animal came up in the queue so i turned out the lights and laid on the floor to look out the window to see the cloudy skies and when it played i turned the volume up at appropriate points and sang along and made my own harmonies and now it's raining and i think i just did a summoning spell
I've always found it fascinating that in That Unwanted Animal, Madeleine sings "can't you hear that scratching/I ask your eyes?" I also love how digital art means I can make new art and scribble writing all over something without losing the original art.
the amazing devil expects me to be normal after hearing if we join our hands in prayer enough to god it all must start to sound like applause????????????
