Swaddling, which fell out of favour in the eighteenth century, was considered essential by Tudor parents of all classes. It was an old practice. On tombs and monuments from at least the fourteenth century, babies were depicted tightly swaddled like little Egyptian mummies. Swaddling not only kept the children warm, but, contemporaries considered, ensured that their limbs grew straight.
At birth, a baby was wrapped in a piece of flannel or linen, ready to be washed. Once clean, and while the midwife attended to the mother, the nurse or other attendant gently placed a linen shirt over the baby's body. She would also prepare the baby's 'breech-cloth' or nappy, which would be a piece of linen often doubled over or lined with some absorbent material, before being fastened into place with pins. The nurse next took out the swaddling bands, which were long, narrow pieces of linen, often tapering to a point at one end.
The bands could be around three yards long. It took considerable skill to wrap a baby, with girls usually perfecting the art in their youth on younger siblings. The bindings had to be tied tight and the limbs bound straight to ensure that they grew correctly, since children were 'tender twigs'. The bands would be removed only when babies soiled themselves or two or three times a day when they were bathed. For obvious reasons, the bands were washable. Given the ineffectiveness of the nappies used, most families would have possessed several sets of bands.
Swaddling bands, such as the late sixteenth-century example on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, could be highly decorative. This rare Italian survival, made of white linen and decorated with white-work embroidery and lace, would have been worn by a royal or noble child. Even then, such finery was only worn on special occasions and would have made up the final layer of swaddling, covering plain, white linen bands. Woollen bands, for colder weather, were also in use; Henry VIII's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, ordered a set for one of her confinements early in the sixteenth century.
The famous Cholmondeley Ladies painting, which dates to the very end of the Elizabethan period and now hangs in the Tate (Britain) Gallery in London, portrays two infants, held by their mothers and dressed in their best swaddling bands. The children wear crimson mantles, which were associated with baptisms. Both babies are swaddled in bands decorated with gold embroidery, while their heads and necks are covered in lace. The patterns on the embroidery match their mothers' bodices, showing that they had coordinated their outfits for the occasion. Poorer children would not be swaddled in anything so fine, but even they might have a 'best' set of bands, for special occasions.
For most children, swaddling ended around eight or nine months of age, although the timing varied according to the development of the child. Princess Elizabeth's younger brother, Prince Edmund, was out of his swaddling by the time he was five months old, when hose and a coat were purchased for him. Once released from their bands, Tudor girls would wear gowns, while boys wore coats – although both garments were, in practice, almost identical. Lower down the social scale, infants of both sexes might wear smocks. All young children wore biggins, which were tight linen caps tied under their chins. Bibs were also commonly tied around their necks.

I'm inclined to think Kate Middleton is either recovering from minor cosmetic surgery or being treated for some affliction of an inflammatory or autoimmune nature (heaven knows there are plenty of them about) and doesn't want to be seen by the press until the worst of the prednisone face wears off.
But the fact that a "Lady Sarah Rose Hanbury, Marchioness of Cholmondeley" seems to be peripherally involved does raise the possibility that we are stuck in a Midsomer Murders episode or other ridiculously British mystery story and in that case, no explanation is too outre.

Boston Museum of Fine Arts Installation view of Fashioned by Sargent Singer Sargent exhibition, 2023 •▪︎(American-British, 1866-1925) • Portrait of Sybil Sassoon • 1922 • Dress: House of Worth
The painting of socialite Lady Sassoon hangs near a display showcasing the exact dress she wore for the portrait. Sargent captures not only the dress but more importantly, the manner and bearing of his subject. Whether she actually wore those grand pearls and large pendant, I don't know. Sargent was known to embellish his portraits to include details and the draping of dress fabrics to suit the aesthetic he aimed for. Moreover, his draping and repositioning of dress fabrics was done to showcase his talent for painting shadows and light, particularly white. In the Sassoon portrait Sargent puts this talent to good effect in his treatment of the off-white cape that is part of her elaborate dress.
I scoured the internet for information about the House of Worth dress Sybil Sassoon wore for this sitting. I wanted to know specifics about the materials of the dress, as I was unable to photograph the gallery card near the display case. I came up short.
Tumblr media
After looking at this excellent photo taken by Lilie Marshall (Around the World with Lilie, Travel and Life Blog) I'm certain that the fabric is black velvet. The bright magenta lining of the high collar and the trim around the peplum waist and cuffs could be either velvet or satin. The wide bands down the front of the dress are, obviously, richly embroidered; perhaps with gold metallic thread or appliqué.
Sources: my own retelling of what I learned about Sargent's portraits attending the exhibition Fashioned by Sargent at the MFA and reading my art books. The photos are not mine. Though I took photos at the exhibition, the ones relevant to this portrait and dress didn't turn out well enough to publish. Credit is given for Lilie Marshall's photo and a link provided above to her blog post. Check it out – Lilie strikes a great pose in front of Madame X!

noooo don't write an intro you're so mysterious
( tw: parental death, terminal illness )
whore
noble born to a couple with an age gap and different social classes, but overall a very romantic courtship. being around lady and lord cholmondeley is nauseating due to the depth of their love.
for the perfect couple, the perfect son was expected. this wasn't the case.
sydney was utterly rambunctious and never did as he was told. the only person able to tame him was his governess, who filled his head with stories about pirates. from then on syd wanted to become the first navigator to sail off the earth's edge
he became obsessed as one does, but this phase of his life never went away. between learning to ride horseback or fencing lessons he snuck into his mother's library and read every book about astronomy and sea creatures.
eventually, after much scolding from his father, he learned to navigate high society, but not without pranks and scandal. his worst (or, one of the one he's most proud of) was getting caught rolling around in the hay with one of the stablemen in his teens.
as he grew old enough to travel, he learned that the world was so large that he couldn't wrap his arms around it.
im trying to get legit serious bc believe it or not he does have hopes and dreams and motivations — he craves adventure in any form it takes, whether it be scandal or adventures at the high seas or political strife. god forbid his life is ever boring.
but. *dims lighting*
his father is very sick, and syd might inherit his estate and affairs sooner than expected. however, syd's heart of hearts (buried underneath swaggering airs) longs for the sea.
every time he left britain, he returned more windswept and shaggy, sand in his hair and salt on his breath. it's only a matter of time before he leaves britain behind for the world — friends, entanglements, family, and responsibilities nothing but a memory.
a rake
pls plot with him! some ideas
hookups (unfortunately, a lot of them)
rivals/people who hate his guts and rightfully so
people who work for his family/who know him beyond his reputation
he's a rather frequent trader so someone who he's a regular customer of, if there's any merchants in the audience
literally anything
i'll be legit serious later but here's him for now <3

<Can I ask you something because I’m actually so confused? How did the Dan wootten rose story come about and who from? Dan hated William around that time and then he started hating on the Sussexes like everyone did>
The story about Rose and Kate rift came from Richard Eden, he reported firstly as: Mystery of the Duchess of Cambridge's alleged rural 'rivalry' with Marquess of Cholmondeley's former model wife, Rose Hanbury.
Then, Wooton like 8-10 days after, took the story and reported the same, but with a more dramatic language. And it’s when the story gained traction on social media, so the rumours started.
One day after Wooton’s article, Richard Kay came with another article denying the story and saying the ladies were seeking legal action but because the tabloid didn’t provide evidence, they decided to forget it. He also was saying that the families were worried because of the tone some people were giving to the story.
According to Dan’s words, so with a pinch of salt, he started hating on them when he was told about the bullying and about their behavior. I don’t know honestly, maybe he started noticing that the tabloids were making more money by hating the duo and he wanted the headlines, but he has never given to me the vibes that he was very positive with the Waleses (as byline suggests) I think he as all the press were using them to make more negative headlines about the other two.
But yeah, it was an article about the rift of two ladies and it became an affair story. Some say that it was the way of the press to hint that an affair happened, but maybe I’m naive or something because my first thought when i saw the story was: or is false or they are fighting because of a party, a gossip R or K tell about each other (not precisely about an affair)
Tumblr media
Oh thanks guys, so this is how it started. And why am I not surprised seeing eden in the mix of people too.

‘Prince George to play official role in the King’s Coronation: Second in line to the throne name as one of Charles III’s four Pages of Honour for May 6 ceremony
Prince George is to become the youngest future king to play an official role at a coronation, having been named one of his grandfather’s four Pages of Honour. T
he nine-year-old will be tasked with carrying the King’s robes alongside three other Pages of Honour - schoolboys Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, 13, Nicholas Barclay, 13, and Ralph Tollemache, 12. All three are the sons of His Majesty’s friends. Meanwhile, the Queen has chosen to include as her own Pages of Honour her three grandsons, twins Gus and Louis Lopes, 13, and Freddy Parker Bowles, 12, as well as her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot, 11.
All eight are expected to wear matching scarlet uniforms and will form part of the procession through the Nave of Westminster Abbey.
Pages of Honour traditionally wear a knee-length scarlet coat with gold trimmings over a white satin waistcoat and lace jabot - a decorative ruffle or frill falling from the collar - white breeches, white stockings and black shoes with buckles. They also carry a small ceremonial sword.
The May 6 ceremony will mark the biggest moment on the world stage for Prince George, second in line to the throne and the youngest of the eight Pages.
His parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, are understood to have thought long and hard about whether to allow him to take on an official role, owing to his tender years. It is thought that they made their decision after discussing it with him in detail to ensure he was comfortable with carrying out such a public duty.
His siblings - Princess Charlotte, seven, and four-year-old Prince Louis, who turns five later this month - are expected to attend the Coronation but sit among the congregation. Prince George is thought likely to join them for the service.
The decision to give the Queen’s family such high-profile roles is said to represent a new era of equality behind palace walls, reflecting the King’s devotion to his wife and the realities of the modern blended family. It is thought that her granddaughters, Lola and Eliza, may also play a role in the ceremony, although further details have not yet been announced.
Palace sources noted that pages are traditionally boys and so only grandsons of a suitable age could be chosen.
Lord Cholmondeley is the second son of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, the King’s Lord-in-Waiting, and his wife the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, former model Rose Hanbury. The couple also have a son, Alexander, Earl of Rocksavage, Lord Cholmondeley’s twin brother, and daughter, Lady Iris, seven. It is understood that Lord Cholmondeley was chosen for the Coronation role in recognition of the fact that his twin is set to inherit their father's title. The family live at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, which is just four miles from Anmer Hall, the Prince and Princess of Wales’s country retreat. The foursome are good friends.
Nicholas Barclay is the grandson of Sarah Troughton, one of the Queen’s Companions and the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire. The Colman’s Mustard heir is a second cousin of the King and a former lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Kent. Her daughter, Rose - Nicholas's mother - is one of the King’s 32 godchildren.
Ralph Tollemache is the elder son of banker Edward Tollemache, also one of the King’s godchildren, who was a Page of Honour to the late Queen from 1988 to 1990. His younger brother, James, was friends with the Prince of Wales at Eton. They are the sons of brewery heir John Tollemache, 5th Baron Tollemache, and his garden designer wife Alexandra Meynell.
While Prince George will be the only one of his three siblings with an official role, all three are expected to take part in the Coronation procession from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace. Plans show that George, Charlotte and Louis will all join their grandfather and the Queen as they leave the Abbey following the ceremony. They will then likely appear together on the palace balcony.
At the past two coronations, young heirs have remained in the congregation. In 1937, Princess Elizabeth, aged just 11, watched as her father, George VI, was crowned. At Elizabeth II’s own ceremony in 1953, Charles, aged four, sat next to his grandmother Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.’

A woman in the Tudor History group I'm a member of recently recommended to me what sounded like a very readable book about Catherine Parr, the wife who survived Henry VIII, written by an academic called Dr Elizabeth Norton. I name-checked her only yesterday when posting about the Elfrida book, not realising they were the same author. Turns out she's written several books about queens (link here). I will keep an eye out for her work in charity shop finds and, as she is also a broadcaster, also on TV documentaries. Nice one!
Will have a more in-depth look at the link later and add info re. each book to the 'queens an' tings' blog in more detail.
And talking of Tudor women, I've finally been getting to grips with a few Tudor men (not as exciting as that might sound!). Essentially, working out who's who in the Seymour and Dudley families.
Seymour - the queen Jane Seymour had three brothers:
Edward, 1st Earl of Somerset, a biography about whom I mentioned in a recent post, who became Lord Protector of England during the minority of his nephew Edward VI, who was eventually executed after being accused of treason by John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.
Thomas, 1st Baron Seymour of Sudeley, who was also executed for treason (and suspected of engaging in sexual relations with Elizabeth I when she was 14 and while she has married to Henry VIII's surviving wife, Catherine Parr).
Sir Henry Seymour - he was actually the second surviving son but I've placed him after Thomas on the list as he led a generally quiet life (although he was an MP at one point) living to a good age in relative obscurity.
The Seymour family lived at a large manor house called Wulfhall or Wolfhall, which was the inspiration for Hilary Mantel's prize-winning masterpiece, 'Wolf Hall'.
Dudley - the father-in-law, husband and brother-in-law of Lady Jane Grey.
John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. Married his son off to Lady Jane in the hopes of ruling by proxy via the young couple. Executed for high treason when Mary I took the throne. Had several children - so far I've only read about the following two.
Lord Guildford Dudley, husband of the young Jane - I need to read up more about him, I think he was only a year older than her and perhaps also a pawn in his father's plans?? He was too executed for high treason.
Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester - he was older than Guildford and a favourite courtier of Elizabeth I, also sentenced to death for treason, but freed. I will read more about him later. I think he hoped to marry Elizabeth, but married someone else who later died in suspicious circumstances (was he accused of pushing her down a flight of stairs??) I think at one point Elizabeth suggested he marry Mary, Queen of Scots and they all live together - that way Elizabeth could maintain her unmarried status and therefore ensure her sole power, while keeping tighter reins on Mary by controlling her choice of partner, plus stay in close proximity to her favourite man - however, the plan came to nothing. He married many years later to a lady called Lettice Knollys, much to Elizabeth's displeasure. She is one of the subjects of my 'queens an' tings' project I will address in more detail later. [Her son, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, became another favourite of Elizabeth's later in life, but he was involved in a plot to try to oust her from the throne, for which he was executed by beheading in 1601].
The painting on the front of the book is 'The Cholmondeley Ladies', painted by an unknown artist circa 1600–10. Perhaps a strange choice as a cover seeing as Elizabeth died in 1603 and the throne was brought under the rule of the House of Stuart?
