The Noblemans Guide to Scandal and Shipwreaks book review *spoilers!*
The Noblemans Guide to Scandal and Shipwreak by Mackenzi Lee (2022)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✖️
Tumblr media
I want to belong to myself. I want to stop feeling worthless and pointless and hopeless and less, less, less than everyone else around me. (...) I want to stop picking at life like it's a meal I don't want to eat, because I want to. I want to taste it all. I want life to be a feast, even if I have to eat it raw and bloody and burned some days.
I finished this book september 3, 2023. Got it for christmas 2022.
The story follows Adrian Montegue, the only heir to Lord Montegue's estate, in the time after his mothers apparent suicide. Being the closest to his mother, Adrian looks into the death trying to find a meaning behind it and discovers a potential conspiracy and myth come to life in the shape of The Flying Dutchman, as well as his two estranged siblings he never knew existed. Adrian have to work through the troubles of his own mind and find the right path in a world that never gave him an easy way out.
I was so pleasantly surprised with this book. This will probably be the happiest I've been about any of the books in this series, which I really didn't expect. It felt like Lee had experience in anxiety and OCD from how incredibly well-written some of the scenes where Adrian is going through it is. It is honestly some of the better writing I've experienced and the scene where Adrian fears he's poisoned with the well water was so impressively done. I still think about that scene, it was really well done! Lee might not have a lot of experience with being a bisexual distaster or an aro-ace pirate doctor, but appears to have some experience with mental health and it's making her writing more enjoyable for me personally.
Adrian is a darling! He's my precious son and deserves love and security and the happiest life in the world. I liked that Lee decided to end the series with the Goblin, who most people probably forgot even existed. his struggles with anxiety and OCD were so real and raw and I felt so bad for him. But I loved the ending and respect Lee for not making it an unrealistic one. I loved Adrians narration and felt super invested in his struggle, a great main character to follow! ✨ It was also nice to see what had happened to our characters in the 20 years since the second book. Monty's kinda the same, though I feel there were moments where his age and maturing showed a little bit and I felt bad because he Really takes a beating in this book. His struggles with his sobriety was explored and I loved the end where he confesses to having fallen but he managed to pick himself up and his siblings, Percy (and I) supported him. Felicity was the same as in the last book, a fierce lady with her own agenda, but we love her. That the book ends with a Monty and Percy wedding was just precious and a great end to the series 😍
I recomend this book to anyone who's read the first two books and liked them. as I said, this was my favorite in the series and definitely made it worth sticking out. I fell for the charm of the montague siblings and if you have as well, this is a book definitely worth checking out! 💝💝
my review of the first and second book in the series

The Assassin’s Blade, by Sarah Maas
This was lent to me by a co-worker. I have had the first in the series on my list for a while but haven’t bought it yet.
I wanted to like it. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t catch me.
The characters just seemed flat, and Celaena is the type of character I have very little patience for. She’s the best assassin, she’s beautiful, and she is impenetrable and tough, and that is the whole of her personality. It bothers me more than it used to when there is a main character that has no weaknesses in their profession or calling, and they are the perfect physical specimen to boot.
Now, I’m not going to say it's because the character isn’t “real” - it's fiction, I’m not looking for reality, what I’m looking for is interesting. And there is just nothing interesting about following a character who is the best and is closed off because of past trauma ™. It is boring because the only thing we the reader get is a bunch of: “Oh she really *is* that good!” or “She’s so good, I must eliminate her!” with “ ‘I’m in love with her!’ No! *I’m in love with her, die you bastard!’” sprinkled in for variety and her interactions with others is limited to “Cruel to be kind” and “I’ll show you my love by not killing you.”
I know that this Beautiful and perfect but cold and or Beautiful but deadly stuff is pretty standard for YA romance, but it’s a bit annoying because it doesn’t need to be that way. I’ve read plenty of YA stuff where the characters aren’t cardboard cutouts set on gilded pedestals. The Montegue Sibling books, Carry On, and The Collegium Chronicles (Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books are epic in scope and though they are all fantasy, I feel like they jump genres a lot and the books following Mags while at school feel more YA than others in that particular universe), even Tithe by Holly Black, which owns its melodrama beautifully, has flawed characters.
So, this one wasn’t for me.  Maybe it’s because it’s prequel stories? I don’t know. The stories were very readable, maybe I’ll give the series a try and see if it changes my perspective

So I don’t know if Percy is a singer but like imagine Monty having like a panic attack because of the PTSD his father caused him when he was abusive! And Percy holds Monty in his arms and he sings to him! And it calms Monty down! Like that just makes me wanna cry tears of joy!

My friends called me mentally immature today which I didn’t understand at first because I’m not that immature! But then I remembered that some of the characters I relate to most are Jake Peralta from B99 and Henry Montegue form TGGTVAV! It all makes sense now!

Okay what if Monty and Percy were TikTokers in 2020? Imagine couple’s TikToks you’ve seen on straight TikTok but it’s on gay TikTok:
Percy infront of a mirror: one day into our relationship
Monty:*clings to his back like a sloth*
Percy: one month into our relationship
Monty: *clings to Percy’s back*
Percy: one year into our relationship
Monty: *clings*
Percy: he’s still clinging
Percy: *smiles lovingly* but he’s adorable so I don’t mind
Percy and Monty: *kiss even tho Monty is still on Percy’s back*

If the gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue was a movie form 2002 they would play I’m with you by Avril Lavigne in the background in that scene when Percy and Monty has fought in Venice and Monty just stumbles around trying to get alcohol to numb his feelings!

A thing I really want for the nobleman’s guide to scandal and shipwrecks! I want Percy and the goblin (I refuse to call him anything else) to have a conversation about Monty! And I want the goblin to be the overprotective little brother Monty didn’t have until now and I want him to say:
Tumblr media
And Percy saying: “I feel the same way only romantically!” And smiling. And that’s when the goblin is like: yup, this is the man that is right for my brother!
