ik i already said he was lactose intolerant but also wanna mention that (like most lactose intolerant ppl) he just does not care. can and will eat a shit ton of dairy and someone will be like 'hey isn't that gonna mess up your stomach?' n hes just like 'lol yea'

weird abt eye contact so sometimes he wont be looking at you during a conversation but sometimes hes just, intensely stare at you, for like no reason. if u ask abt it he'll just shrug but it can be very frightening when you dont notice and all of a sudden you turn and see him just like 😶

hehehe thank you for the Jessica Jones ramble!!! ur sooooo right abt everything tbh. i totally think ur fine to just watch s1, like the others were fine but s1 stands alone really well. also i feel it with tennant tbh i never even liked him until he was kilgrave and its still my favorite role hes ever had

Its just, its so sad it could only happen in the lawless era of Baby Netflix because its just delicious. I think if more of marvel's ips were handled with a similar brush i might actually enjoy them. Not to say they have to all be Gritty Noirs Focused On Very Grounded Villains, but itd be nice if they really sat w their premises. I dunno if any of the movies w Steve and Bucky ever really get into that sorta thing, but theres such a depth you could get out of Steve and Bucky grappling with the future and adapting and challenging their 30s? Worldview, etc.

Tennant just did such a good job w Kilgrave. Simmons was uh terrifying lol. I realize I hadnt mentioned Trish and. Ough. Ough. I love her so much, like any good noir should elicit, I spent so much of her screentime murmuring "girl dont do this". I love her desperation and drive to help people even at her own peril. Much like Jessica, she can't help it, but unlike Jessica she's not physically strong enough to not be the damsel, so she hides in Rapunzel's pin-locked tower and learns to fight in the hopes that if the evil stepmother or a dragon comes she'll be ready. And then the dragon asks her to come in, politely, through the front door and she's so charmed by his candor that she's helpless. The entire rest of the show after Trish popped one of Simmons' pills to save Jessica, I was just looking at her like a dog eating something it's not supposed to.

"TRISH WALKER, WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR PURSE?! DROP IT RIGHT NOW! EMPTY YOUR PURSE YOUNG LADY--[MIMING PRYING HER LITTLE BAG OPEN]"

It really was like, incredible how harrowing every moment with Trish's mom was. The scene where she was trying to force Trish to purge was so hard to watch, made me cry.

And then theres Malcolm abd Robyn abd Reuben abd this isnt even getting into the deliciously toxic yuri wrt Hogarth and Pam and her ex-wife whose name I'm blanking on. Honestly this us just a testament to how beautifully female lead so much of the show felt, which really added so much punch to the themes they were tackling, especially since there were a ton of Kilgrave's victims who were men (but weren't solely the focus).

I really loved Malcolm, especially after they, blessedly, revealed that his addiction was less of some stereotypical black druggie horseshit abd that Kilgrave had just added another tool in his arsenal to keep a good guy under thumb. (To be clear whether his reasons for his addiction, he needed help and compassion, but I was wary of it as a like stock trope.) Learning he'd wanted to go into social work was gutwrenching.

I think, though, I was most impressed with Robyn and Reuben. From the outset they seemed very...Stock "Crazy" Apartment Weirdos, abd as was perhaps the intent, they made me very uncomfortable, especially with early appearances making it seem like there was some WEIRD incest going on. And then Reuben's little crush on Jessica happened and I dreaded every time he was on screen but gradually less because he was a little weirdo and more because he was so visibly a little weirdo head over heels for Jessica. I cried when he died, and I was shocked at how masterfully they made me care. And then Robyn's neuroses kept building in the background abd foreground as she desperately searched for Reuben, and even though she's absolutely weird and abrasive and perhaps needs anti-anxiety medication, she's so solidly a mourning person who was so afraid because as much as she felt like her brother couldn't survive without her (and woe, she was kinda right), she needed him. The scene in the penultimate? Episode? Of Season 1, where she sobs because his fucking charger finally came, days too late, because she told him express shipping was too expensive? Oh that crushed me and made me really gel w her very strongly as a character.

Everyone's Arcs were so good aaaaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaaa. (I love Luke Cage and i practically danced every time he was on screen. Just such a wonderfully grounded, traumatized man.)

Tbh Im KIND OF GLAD THAT HE JUST DESTROYED HIM HE WAS BEGINNING TO GET A LITTLE ANNOYING...

Its interesting to think about it. 

He could have been downright offensive to these three as all of the troupe is still processing the deaths of Shalnark and Kortopi and hes just telling them to discard all of that. 

Imagine if somebody like Luini showed up after Uvogins death/during their requiem.. yea... I have a feeling Nobunaga would be even more pissed.

In the previous chapters and stuff he just looked so strange and it wasn��t bothering me or anything but yaa there he is.

I love when the characters are so short compared to the others that you can only see the very top of their heads.

PSHHH I HOPE HE NEVER STOPS PUTTING REFERENCES IN HXH. The movie theater was a perfect place to do this.

Im pretty sure that this is Alien but I cant see it very clearly.

It would be so fun to have a concept like the Thing come into play in the succession war... I think that it would be a perfect opportunity for horror. I mean we already have Prince Tserriednich’s first Nen beast. I’m so excited. 

And there he is. Gah I love the framing of this panel. You can see everybody’s face but Hisoka’s, and he’s split in the middle with all the white space of the theater. It gives an ominous feeling specifically towards Hisoka. 

Just an aside here, too, the way Hisokas hair is styled and the way his eyes are drawn looks similar to Chrollo’s the last time we saw him, which is interesting to me. The resemblance isn’t too strong, but It’s interesting to think about.

The way that he just sits down in this panel and immediately starts talking is so funny to me just change the text to anything.

ANYWAYS thats unrelated. I really like this scene. I get the impression  that Hisoka is above it all, and just deciding to comply with what Xi-Yu and Cha-R wants without any true dedication, and I feel like Hinrigh is aware of this because he knows exactly the type of person Hisoka is, so he’s being honest.

I’m also beginning to really like Hinrigh as well because of his intuition, understanding, and efficiency. No wonder he’s the underboss. Knowing and dealing with the type of freak Hisoka is is no small feat. 

Hes trying to mess with him by getting close but Hinrigh is just like ‘Ok.’

This was an awesome interaction though tbh. I want to see more conversations between them since its an interesting dynamic. Hinrigh isn’t directly against Hisoka, which is seen in his disinterest in getting in the way of his and the spiders quarrel, so they agree over that, but he has to keep him under surveillance due to the situation. Everything about Hisoka goes against this, however. He is going to defy this without question, and I am certain Hinrigh knows this, so what does he have in mind to stop him? 

these must be more references. the girl choking the other one seems familiar but i dont know about the others and I dont know what that one is from.

The other part isnt super interesting to me, so I’ll leave it for me to delve back into on another read. I often understand things better on the second time anyways.

Gosh, these page layouts are great, the shading of the bed on the second one I am enjoying thoroughly, and again with the middle focus and the front and back look at the room... aaahhhhhhghhgg anyways. 

WHY ARE HINRIGH AND THE OTHER GUY SO TALL (I forgot his name uh oh). It’s either that or the cabins are very small, which is probably the case.

Its funny, this page layout is a little unnerving, and then you just see how short the doorway is ...

Final thoughts on the chapter, Hinrigh is so cool, and this guy definitely is hiding something. I think he’s not a threat himself, but rather is innocent and is being forced to cover something for somebody who is a threat.

A little later than I wanted to post my review but its okay. I’m looking forward to the next one, since honestly I don’t know what it’s going to throw at me. Often times it proves my predictions wrong, but thats okay, it’s fun to think about more. 

It’s nice to know people actually read these too, it’s relieving to write these down to get all of my thoughts out, and I feel happy when other people actually acknowledge them even though theyre often just rambles of things off the top of my head when I read these things lol.

Forced my boy to watch the watchmen movie with me (so he could get what I was yelling about on my private instagram story, I was mansplaining the whole time and we watched the directors cut), so here are my thoughts:

It was relatively faithful (not that that's a measure of how good something is), and overall criticisms I can think of have already been made (fight choreography, Zack kinda missing the point) and for a goofy little time its pretty enjoyable :3

I think that they messed up Dan's character, he was made too confident... (I love his extremely passive/gentle demeanor and speech patterns so much so much and they took that away from him... growls...) and also how his relationship with Laurie was handled

I really didn't like how they had Dan immediately come onto her in the dinner scene (like im looking at the book rn and I'm failing to see romantic subtext there, though I am like really bad at seeing that kinda stuff so it could be user error?) they just feel really underbaked in the movie, kinda gives me "oh they're boy and girl they kiss now" energy, where in the book they have a lot more time to develop (also like Dan also knew her since she was 16 iirc so having her take most of the initiative makes it feel way less predatory... and I wanna clarify I think Laurie and Dan are great for each other and he treats her so well after they're established)

Not to mention the pool scene! That scene was so fucking deep and tender etc. I CRODE and there was really nothing comparable in the movie (ALSO WHY DID THEY HAVE JON KISS HER OH MY GOD)

I also personally fucking HATED how the Roche scene was handled but I guess burning a dude alive was too much /opinionated because I can see how it kinda makes sense like killing him the same way he killed his dogs or whatever and its a relatively easy way to go...

But god in the comic where he's just standing and waiting is so powerful, also like really fucked up because the guy didn't even outright confess (which its like were certain its him but theres that <1% chance it was wrong guy wrong place wrong time to be thought about) also being burnt to death is accepted to be one of the most painful ways to die and to put salt in the wound giving him the saw even though both of them knew he wouldn't get out... it just makes him feel super Fucked Up And Evil which makes sense! That scene is one of the very rare cases in fiction where I get the same gut response as I get when hearing about real fucked up murders

those were my main issues tbh I really liked how they did Rorschach's mask also his waist being so snatched under the trench coat was driving me crazy... loved his casting esp because im also a short freak, there needs to be more of us

Good things about Dan though he still is sweet and gentle despite not being as much as I wished he was... like when he fixed Rorschach's collar and just little things like that... and despite my grievances with how his relationship was handled with Laurie it wasn't fucked up TOO bad...

crow where can i find out the whole fnaf story easily? do i just go to the wiki or is there a good video to watch online? i love the games but have never actually learned all the lore behind them and with the movie coming out i want to finally do that

an actual super short explanation that is genuinely really good and concise and covers the majority of the plot is this video right here! this is probably the kind of thing you’re looking for and it sums everything up way better than i think i ever could tbh

however. long-winded response with extra details below lol

so i do want to start with saying that there Really isnt an easy explanation for a lot of the lore of the games bc so much of it is still heavily debated, to the point that even a lot of the basic timeline is pretty open for interpretation. that said, theres a good few commonly accepted timelines and theories that tend to be very similar to each other with only minor differences (such as swapping the order in which a few deaths happened early on), but part of why i really love fnaf so much is because the plot holes and inconsistencies make the story feel more involved as you try to figure out how you think everything happened. all this to say that my answer (and the video’s answer) is probably different from the next person’s answer which is different from the next person’s and so on

also despite being deeply obsessed with these games for like 9 years now, i havent read any of the books at all! the books and games (and movie) are viewed as being different canons, even as far as having different children in the main characters’ families in the books compared to the games. so my answer is only going to be about the games.

NOW while i love that video, for the sake of being concise it does miss a few things! and instead of sending you on a scavenger hunt to find answers for each specific thing i figure it would probably be easier (and more fun for me tbh. mostly the second part. i really love these games) to just briefly explain some of them:

the storyline order of the games: this is slightly complicated because of the cutscenes and main gameplay often taking place at different points in the storyline. some bits and pieces can be argued about what order they happened in, but my personal timeline is:

fnaf 4 cutscenes (bite of ’83)

fnaf 4 gameplay (evan’s nightmare coma following the bite of ’83)

fnaf 5 gameplay (sister location)

fnaf 2 gameplay (ends with the bite of ’87)

fnaf 1 gameplay

fnaf 3 cutscenes (william gets springlocked) (im torn putting this one here tbh but elaborating on that would make it more confusing i fear lol)

fnaf 3 gameplay (fazbear frights)

fnaf 6 gameplay (pizzeria simulator)

fnaf 7 gameplay (ultimate custom night, not a canon game to my understanding, but i really like including it, personally)

who do you play as in each game: like the timeline, some of these games are pretty clear on who you play as, and some are still debated a bit (i’m looking at you “fritz”). some of these are just heavily theorized, some are essentially confirmed. for the sake of simplicity, i’m just going to list them all together though.

michael afton: fnaf 1 (as “mike scmidt”), 3 (unnamed), 5 (as “mike”/“eggs benedict”), 6 (unnamed)

“evan” afton: fnaf 4

william afton: likely fnaf 7

jeremy fitzgerald (no that name has not been mentioned elsewhere in here, this is his only appearance shoutout jeremy, he showed up, nearly got murked, and never came back): fnaf 2 nights 1-6

fnaf 2 night 7 is where “fritz” comes into play: i think hes michael, as he was fired for similar reasons to “mike scmidt,” but from what i’ve seen this is still debated a bit, so im giving fritz his own section

evan’s name: we don’t actually know his name, but “evan” is the most commonly used fanon name and has been for years now. not that important but just in case you see someone calling him another name such as CC, which stands for crying child (because his sprite in the cutscenes in the game was almost always crying)

the order of the murders: the video i linked quickly covers the murders of the five children (susie, jeremy (not fitzgerald), fritz (also not the possibly michael fritz, i do not know why scott only knows like 10 names), gabriel, and cassidy), charlie emily, elizabeth afton, evan afton, and michael afton. to my knowledge, the only confirmed sequence of these deaths are actually:

susie, the little girl who haunts the chica animatronic, was the first one to be killed

evan died in 1983 (the bite of ’83)

michael died last

while the rest are usually left to fanon and theorized timelines.

movie tie-ins: WOOO MOVIE so obviously this is all speculation based on one teaser, one trailer, and audition descriptions, but so far we know we have “mike scmidt” in the movie as our main character. is he going to be a new character? is he going to be michael afton using an alias like in the game? no idea! and aside from potential leaks, we probably wont know until october 27. we also know that he has a little sister in the movie! her name is abby, not elizabeth, but its very possible she’s a similar “character” with a name swap, we really don’t know yet (also i feel that “abby” is a bit close to “baby” like the “circus baby” animatronic that killed elizabeth and that she then haunts so). we also know from audition descriptions that michael is “riddled with guilt over a tragedy in his past” which people are hoping will be the accidental manslaughter of his younger brother, as it would lend to the possibility of movie michael being michael afton. i dont really feel the need to elaborate on william speculation given its everywhere lol, but i do want to place an emphasis on vanessa being in the movie - almost certainly the same vanessa from help wanted and security breach. full transparency: i did not like her in those games because i felt she was a potentially original new villain that could’ve been cool to see after william was finally killed in pizzeria simulator, only for her to then be turned into a plot device to resurrect william. i’m in the personal camp of “let peepaw stay dead can we move on already,” so that twist annoyed me a lot lol (all the power to those who enjoyed her character/arc, but personally im just too attached to the ending of pizzeria simulator having michael and william both finally dying to enjoy the william resurrection plot like at all). given william seems to be fairly alive in the trailer, though, im hoping this means she’ll actually get to be her own character. either way, she looks like shes going to be important in this movie, so you might find her worth looking into as well!

i really like this video on the b4rbie movie. i did like the movie, to clarify. i thought it was fun, i thought some of the feminist stuff was really good. spoilers ahead obv, but i really enjoyed the section where she has a breakdown and talks about all the contradictory stuff women are supposed to be. i liked the section where shes talking to ruth about wanting to be human and to be a woman despite it all. i liked that part of the message was that a lot of men need to fuckin get hobbies instead of their personality being Woman-Liker. i LOVED the songs being camp and mostly actually made for and about the film instead of using generic pop songs (tho the billie eilish song was jarring and took me out of it).

However. i did think it was pretty,,, superficial. some of that was because its a corporate product and there wouldve been restrictions on what gerwig could do. like she cant criticize the mattel board too much, because it would "make the company look bad." like mattel refused to call the movie feminist, and i think theres an aversion to calling the movie anything too concretely subversive, maybe because that turns the "ive been saying this for years!!" aspect into not relatability, but being behind the times, or worse, performative. which it is.

BUT i also think it really played into the Girlboss feminist schtick. like that in the end they went back to a matriarchy. i dont think the film was saying matriarchy bad, and im not even trying to say that it would be equally as bad as patriarchy bc i dont know nor do i care. but i do think it had that vibe of "men are stupid, right ladies?!? we know best with our woman power ;)" which feels a little weird tbh. even the little comments like implying that a president would NEVER dress like that or a woman would have to be BRAINWASHED to want to be a housewife is uncomfortable to say the least. the final gynocology joke at the end felt really reductive even with a trans woman in the movie. it felt weird for her to go to the queer-coded b4rbies to get help and then they stop mattering when they arent helping cishet b4rbie society. and no butch b4rbies, obviously.

it felt like they were going "see? woman power!! but dont forget to be respectable!!" despite halfway through talking about how hard it is to be respected as a woman. and this is most egregious when they have sasha going on an honestly reasonable and well-founded rant about the negative social impact of b4rbie which is then not really brought up in a meaningful way again. shes played for laughs and its only addressed as a "we hear your criticisms but theyre very silly bc barbie stands for woman power so there. 😊" like she calls b4rbie a fascist and thats a whole joke, which is really fucking weird tbqh.

but my point is that its ok to be critical of the way women are treated and what is expected of women, and its ok to be weird or ugly or whatever!! up until the point it makes you ACTUALLY ugly or tooOo much of a deviant (like dressing in revealing clothing as a professional, or criticising consumerism which is just a silly thing to do because why would you EVER-), in which case you just hate women and make the cause look bad.

anyway, i thought the movie was fun. it looked great, the soundtrack was fun, the casting choices were pretty good, and i liked the real talk about how hard being a woman can be. at the same time, it was a very long ad for b4rbie. it was corporate, and mostly sold a very girlboss, shallow look at feminism. a good entry point for like, men who think women arent oppressed but love their girlfriend enough to TRY to understand, or for middle aged women looking to hear something nice about their existence, or people looking for a fun summer movie with a few funny bits. not a great movie for film nerds or riotgrrls or trans people or anti-capitalists.

i've been thinking about reviews and critics a lot, and i think how we rate things is a particularly intersting part of this discussion. so,

my thoughts on ratings scales

that isn't really a "scale" per se but more of a negation of the idea of ratings

null (p0/p1)

if every work doesnt get a rating (or gets the same rating), then the rating doesnt matter, and thus the focus goes from the rating to the review, what you actually have to say about it is what matters and should stand on its own

i think that this is best most of the time, because it generally leads discussion to the work itself instead of a simple label youre putting the work under

2 point scale (p2)

that generally comes into the form a bad/good dichotomy, which in my opinion is incredibly over-simplistic.

youre grouping together a mildly entertaining film with a generation-defining masterpiece, or a boring movie with a incredibly offensive and harmful one

and thats kind of by design, as the previous one, it tries to put focus on the text and not the rating, but i find that having such broad categories makes them virtually useless and defeats the purpose of having them in the first place

and thats the one rotten tomatoes uses, kind of, it compiles all individual 2 point reviews in a single 100 point number, which obviously loses a lot of information and makes so broad appeal works generally rate higher than polarizing ones

i think this scale is best used as "don't recommend/recommend", and to not frame it as quality measure, in that way you avoid a lot of the problems it has

rating: bad, its just bad, dont use this

3 point scale (p3)

this is not a very common one tbh, but its kind of an upgrade from the 2 point scale, because it allows you to have a kind of "neutral" rating for works that arent exceptional in either side like a "bad/fine/good"

so its generally better, and i think it has its place in a more informal setting but it still has most of the problems of the previous one

rating: its fine

star rating (★★★★★) (p5)

pretty common one, and for good reason, it has a broad categories that work more of a general sentiment than as a specific rating, and thus doesnt take away the focus from the actual review but still allowing an easy to understand rating

that said, context really matters here, in a lot of platforms like yelp this scale turns into "1 star/5 stars" i.e. a 2 point scale, as the people inclined to rate something are the ones who feel strongly either way. generally the design/community of the platform dictates how it will be used

i personally think this scale is best used by individual critics when they have the platform for more long-form review

also, theres a variation of this scale introduced to me by videogamedunkey, that i like to call skewed 5 point scale. instead of using 3 as a neutral rating, it uses 2.5 as a neutral point, so 1-2 for negatives and 3-5 for positives, that removes a "nothing" rating and gives a bit more nuance to the part of the scale that is more used (see image below, ill talk more about that later)

half star rating (p10)

the most common one in online platforms like rateyourmusic or letterboxd, it generally comes in the form of 0.5-5 while allowing half stars

its the one i have more experience using, and i think is the best in that enviromnent, it allows more precision than p5, and thus more expressive in a platform centered around short-form review and allows more meaningful statistics in the site

the only problem i see is that it has a bit too much precision in the context of critics that make longer-form reviews like Anthony Fantano from theneedledrop, that has a section of his public more interested in the rating then his videos, which is largely avoided by dunkey's scale for example. that isnt to say that its bad, it isnt, james from scharafillas uses a p10 without issue. its largely up to personal preference

rating: 9/10

100 point scale

the most common between major mainstream publications and critics, and also on albumoftheyear (which i personally have been a part of for a long time), so i dont think i'm biased when i say that this is fucking stupid

this is just too much precision in any meaningful sense, whats the difference between 27 and 28 or between 8.2 and 8.3, there isnt one, theres no amount of arguments you could say to me to make me understand why you think what you do in that level of precision.

i regularly watch Brad Taste In Music and he is a great critic, he makes pretty clear points while being entertainment and i always can guess roughly his rating based on what he points out, but never to that much precision, which i dont think adds to what he says at all

a few other ones

p6: its just a skewed p5 but with an added 0 so that it isnt actually skewed, which i find pretty unecessary since the distinction between a 0 and a 1 isnt very common or meaningful

p20: generally comes in the form of 0.5-10, but its just a bit worst version of a p10 in my opinion, but its still better than a p100

conclusion

i think theres pretty obviously 3 ratings that are best depending on the situation

p0 is great in most contexts, ratings are not necessary

p5 is amazing, especially the skewed one, if you have the time/platform to talk about the thing in more detail, as it pretty obviously isnt supposed to have much precision

p10 is probably just as good as p5 in that context, but its way better in online places as i described previously, so its not a surprise to me how common it is

so, this are the ones youll see me using, every other rating scale can stop existing from now on, fuck p100

+ when lupin is briefly shown to have a whole wardrobe full of feminine clothes that would only really make sense for him to have if he wears them regularly. probably for disguises but i like that he seems so comfortable with it and its not made into a joke either. in fact in his very first scene he is disguised as a woman and was femme fataling for a heist and i honest to god thought he was fujiko at first

- .... not to say this or many other pieces of lupin media are progressive. ngl there were some parts i feel didnt age great particularly one horny lupin moment with fujiko that left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth

- artstyle is just kinda Bland. idk if i would go far enough to say its BAD but it didnt stand out to me

- gonna be honest this one kinda dragged for me a bit plot wise. there were a lot of cute moments but besides those and jigen’s ex sideplot it wasnt terribly interesting

- pops was definitely sidelined 😔

island of assassins/walther p38 (1997):

+ this is a great more action oriented special! if you are looking to watch something more serious but not quite koike levels serious this is a solid choice

+ i actually was pretty interested in the plot itself which is rare for lupin specials lol

+ amazing smooth animation and fight scenes!! it wasnt too shocking to find out that it had been worked by many well known talents in the industry like gainax/trigger’s hiroyuki imaishi

+ MY FUJIGOE CRUMBS

+ elen was a pretty cool original character

+ zenigata WAS kinda sidelined again but..... theres a scene where he literally resurrects himself from the brink of death right after his heart stops because someone in the room mentioned lupin. i think that makes up for it

- artstyle/character designs are kinda... idk if i would say BAD but they are very much a Generic 90s Action Anime style. not my favorite look

jigen’s gravestone (2014):

+ jiglup. i loved their relationship progression so much!!! it seems like they are still early in their partnership in this movie... work partners but not quite friends yet.... at first. you can really see the turning point where their relationship start evolving into something deeper and into the mutual trust we come to expect from them. its great im rotating them in my mind

+ animation is so so so so so great and sexy also

- time to address the elephant in the room... if you have seen jigen’s gravestone, or know anything about the plot, chances are you know what im talking about. fujiko’s narrative treatment is BAD bad and deeply disappointing even though i enjoyed the rest of the film a lot. really say what you will about twcfm but... sayo yamamoto would have never put fujiko in a scene like that, at least never at that level of gratuitousness. i heard these films do get better with fujiko and im still plenty of excited to watch more but yeah that was Yikes  

operation return the treasure! (2003):

+ this special was like. delightful. what a good goofy little experience. was laughing AND smiling

+ idk if it was just me but kanichi kurita seemed to be putting in effort to make lupin sound EXTRA silly. and i totally appreciate it because this lupin is so cute

+ animation was solid!

+ i thought the premise was great. the concept of the gang having to return a bunch of treasures instead of stealing them is so fun. the plot got a little strange with the alien stuff there at the end but hey its lupin its natural at this point

+ jigen :^) i love him being all like “this job is DUMB and im not doing it” at the beginning and then getting fully invested in the antics. this guy is way too weak for his partner

- Man in a Dress Joke :^/ for the most part the humor in this special is superb but understandably this one does not land great even if it is far from the worst of these jokes ive seen

prison of the past (2019):

+ must a lupin the third special be “good”? is it not enough to watch some entertaining stupid shit?

+ i really enjoyed watching this ngl the plot was not interesting but i enjoyed the character interactions enough that it made up for it

+ im glad yata was utilized in this special because his dynamic with zenigata is delightful. i hope they get to do more funny shit together in part 6

+ huge win for lupin/jigen/goemon enjoyers. it was really cute how goemon has a bit of reflection on why he decides to stay with these clowns and comes to the conclusion that he loves being part of this circus

What do you think of Lilo & Stitch on the exotification verses representation front? I remember liking it as a kid but tbh I haven't seen it in years. ☆

hmm well i think its important to note that ultimately, lilo and stitch was written, directed, and produced by three white men. so thats gonna end up detracting significantly from any arguments of authenticity in the movie regardless, especially considering that the film was originally meant to be set in kansas; hawaii was a decision made afterwards but that being said MAN was it such a good decision. rural kansas was originally chosen because they wanted a place that seemed isolated, but it was only the moment they chose hawaii as a setting that the actual plot started to get laid down clearly. though i do think the idea of hawaii being a "perfect" choice for a film about isolation leans a lot more into the racist/exotifying idea that indigenous lands are untouched paradises rather than some sort of commentary on how colonialism led to forced isolation.

i think something really important in what makes lilo and stitch feel authentic, though, aside from smaller things people point out like visiting kauai for research (these kinds of trips are actually pretty normal in the makings of stories in "foreign" places, and ultimately they dont really show any proof in and of themselves of Good representation) and allowing nani and david's (hawaiian) voice actors to modify the script, is the fact that this is pretty much one of the only movies from disney i can think of where the plot was built around the setting during production. the setting wasnt just slapped on top of the plot.

a lot of the scenery actually indicated hawaii's economic recession in the early 2000s, and what stands out to me in particular was the scene where nani works at what she calls the "fakey" luau...theres just sooo much in the movie thats subtle commentary on hawaii's forced commodification for white tourists. and of COURSE theres the deleted scene where lilo scares the tourists away from the beach and how it ends with "if you lived here youd understand" LIKE DAMN...a lot of disney Films Of Color now tend to focus on people of color in a fantasy setting devoid of racism WHICH IN ITSELF IS FINE. we deserve to have stories where suffering doesnt have to be capitalized upon in order to be considered a story "worthy" of telling. but thats what makes that sort of commentary actually being there in lilo and stitch feel unique. i think the fact that anything regarding tourists is treated sort of tongue-in-cheek rather than make it a part of the movie's aesthetic like most renaissance films of the 90s is what makes it tackle exotification more head on.

all this being said, the movie still obviously falls into the trap of commodifying hawaiian cultures just because its a movie, by disney no less, and theyre gonna do whatever they can to make money off it, including selling the idea of a "hawaiian paradise." but i think reading a lot about the production of the film itself, hawaiians did have a large part in contributing to the story when compared with other disney films of color, Definitely especially for 2002 when that sort of idea of a story of color that actually incorporated a culture in as a big part of the movie was unheard of in animation.

sooo ultimately i think its a Better disney movie in terms of exotification vs representation, but a lot of it just has to do with the fact that the bar is pretty low with other disney movies LOL. like. there are three films starring people of color in the experimental era, and this is the ONLY one that doesnt have the main character turn into an animal 🤨 though i cannot understate how big of a role it had in opening the gates for more stories of color in animation, not just in disney but in general due to how it was both a commercial and critical success when it came out

Can we just talk about the ending of KawoShin open discuss. *sort of spoilerish*

I feel like I’m the only one who’s like reallly disappointed LMFAO--ya’ll there’s so much “canon” alternative universe and merchandise for Kawoshin in Evangelion that it kind of makes me upset to realise this couple just went down the drain. Yeah, I can see how people were like, “Kaworu’s toxic” or “Kaworu has a hero complex for Shinji” to which I say are valid points. But the toxic thing I feel like can also be applied to pretty much everyone around Shinji tbh, except for Rei. I did NOT, like Asuka at all but I really love her character though, and I felt for her a lot throughout the series.

I did not ship them either because honestly, Shinji and Asuka seemed better off playing the sibling dynamic instead of trying to play bf/gf which honestly is kind of forced by their living situation. Also since they’re in a similar disposition non existent father and dead mother, you’d imagine they would rely on each other for emotional comfort. Though Asuka—her personality I feel like she can’t differentiate between familial love and romantic love and the affection she wants is a bit of both. But, her character tries to be “mature”; she wants romantic love more and does this through sexual means and romantic gestures e.g. like kissing. One of my friends told me that you can’t stay friends as a boy and a girl cause eventually you catch feelings. Which I say is kinda dumb cause I have a lot of male friends, and I definitely don’t harbour those feelings, but I guess it’s a common phenomena.

I think this is what happens in this case, of Asuka and Shinji. Even after rejection of instrumentality they actually are depicted as childhood friends. But knowing how they both were before to each other, it was not good tbh. Also to mention the choking like thrice— bro if anything, this showcases a really abusive relationship and I think this outstretches the idea of their character tropes. Which I firmly stand by saying they’re superficial to each other. AsuShin were never really there for each other and are using each other in a forced situation. However, you can’t deny that they didn’t at some point catch feels, also Shinji is pretty consistent how he still cares about everyone around him. Which I really like how they add that to his character because it reminiscent of Yui, because you see a duality of both his parents personality in Shinji throughout the series—it’s a really nice touch. But bruh, if we gonna talk about that coma scene—I’m out LOL.

Thoughhhh, she is a true definition of best girl I really like her arc, fighting drive, and her skills as an Eva pilot 😭💗--but bruh she’s still a toxic and sometimes annoying tsundere trope, but still she’s 14 what can you do. So I feel like Kensuke and Asuka are actually a pretty good combo, cause he’s always been pretty mature even without parents. Also Asuka was into older guys, so I guess this is a win win?? Also Rei and Shinji, I honestly cannot get my head around it cause that’s pretty much his mom—so in a way that’s like either his half-sister or mom-ish clone?? Idk but Yui is definitely the donor LOL.

Kaworu and Shinji I felt like brought a bunch of things out of each other. I don’t know which timeline begins first, but I’d like to think the manga, the anime (plus its movies), and then to the rebuild series. Because I think that order is kind of pivotal to observing Kaworu’s character development from being a person who’s trying to understand human feelings to then the kinder person we see in the final series. You can tell how he’s changed and he knows Shinji a lot more as well as being considerate to him e.g. giving him personal space or letting him work at his own pace. Also that “we’ll meet again.” Is an obvious nod to how he’s done this before.

His literal story in every timeline is always romantic LOL, like bruh I can’t remember which game it was but basically a bad ending of Kawoshin route is that you reject Kaworu and he starts the third impact 🤡. Also I don’t know why but I started to see a weird dynamic between those two, in the manga their interactions reminded me of Asuka and Shinji—which Shinji is the tsundere Asuka here. I don’t know if this is relevant but the older character relative to the character they’re with seems to play off a mature vs a childish person trope. Asuka is younger than Shinji and Shinji is actually younger than Kaworu. Then again I could be overseeing this but istg manga Kaworu and Shinji mirror the whole Asushin dynamic. Like he’s seriously agressive against Kaworu, then after killing him he admits liking him. 🤡 I don’t know which is funnier no homo Shinji, homophobe shinji, or just closet Shinji who needs to realise sexuality is a spectrum so he could’ve idk—come out as bisexual, but whatever manga Shinji lol that timeline is over.

Anyways the development of these two is real and I think the rebuild timeline shows them at their best bringing their own personage out from each other like how they both enjoy music together--WHICH I’M SO SAD WE NEVER GET TO SEE THAT CELLO AGAIN. Then there’s those feelings of humanity, love, kindness, etc. Which yeah an angel could represent those things, but Kaworu is still his own person, self-aware of a cycle and if you think about how he initially was there to USE Shinji, but ultimately turned on that plan set by SEELE because he loved Shinji (and a bunch of other things like him showing Kaworu humanity). I also can see the argument, how “ideal” Kaworu is to Shinji, but he’s more self aware of the time he has before he KNOWS he’ll die and knows how to act for himself in that duration to make the most of it. All with Shinji. At some point, I think he fell in love with Shinji tho I don’t know where it began tbh—considering that all those alternate universes do exist. Kaworu does romantically love Shinji--so, in some universe they both reciprocate their feelings to each other. 

In the last movie during that convo with Shinji. Like bREH it’s so emotionally moving because Kaworu remembers ALLLLL the timelines and how he’s been with Shinji and later Shinji himself recalls the events too. Where they show the scene from the manga and anime. Kaworu cries after being set free from the EVA cycle. Which, I definitely understood what he meant by him saying “it’ll be lonely” and how Shinji changed or that he’s actually different this time.

Either way, Shinji did right by him because it’s always Kaworu who has the purpose of “trying to save Shinji” but it always ends up the same. I thought that was really moving because Shinji tells Kaworu he’s gonna let him live a life for himself for once and he wants the same for everyone as well. Which was honestly so meaningful cause I think Kaworu’s character and like Rei too when they start to realise how to “live” like a person and not another puppet it’s truly liberating. Another thing I forgot, bruh Kaworu calls Gendo his father and ngl I feel like this is kind of a weird lore situation because I for sure don’t think he’s the donor. I think he calls him that as an insult because he knows Gendo’s whole doing and relative to Shinji—I kind of see it as a joke LOL. Like it’s equivalent to saying, “daddy chill”, or “hey look it’s daddy and his plans to end the world” also I kind of like to think of it as a father in law thing cause you know, Kawoshin *winks amirite*

The ending, I’m honestly hoping is just an open ending because it gives everything an actual start of their adult lives not being dictated by extraterrestrial forces. Though, I’m kind of wondering if the world doesn’t have EVAs does that still mean everyone else still has the same backstory, and do they remember? Maybe Mari really is just a coworker lmfao, and there’s still a chance for Kaworu and Shinji cause ngl, they did have a convo (presumably from the spoilers) about still remaining close afterwards and that stare at the ending seems very hopeful.

I call bs from Anno saying, “oh Shinji is based off him and Mari off of his wife”, like honestly any OCs made theres always some part of yourself made into that character. Which is probably why a lot of people relate to the characters in EVA because they’re based off real things (e.g. those war machines characters are named after and people around them). I think why Kaworu and Rei are together at the end, is bc they’re very much the same. They’re mass produced dolls—which oddly enough that’s the case for all the children except they don’t recall the loop. Kind of funny also how both Kaworu and Rei became farmers lmfao so ig it runs in the family (yes that’s right I like the idea that they’re siblings it was always noted that they’re like “the same”).

Another thing, i think why the rebuild really did well for Kawoshin and in my opinion canonised it—the convo with elder Ryoji Kaji (Misato’s baby daddy) that there was a time he felt incredibly lonely and depressed thinking Misato didn’t love him and so he started looking out for himself. So self love and found himself a hobby in farming which he suggests to Kaworu—basically saying he might feel like Shinji doesn’t love him but he’s gotta remember to take care of himself. if I go thru a breakup ill feel like it’s the end of the world but Kaji says y’a gotta self love broe and take care yo self gad dam fam 😭 💗.

Though, that look at the end from Shinji to Kaworu—I’d like to believe there is still hope that one day when they’re a bit stable in their adult lives, they’ll run into each other.

Ok so I had a dream where I was dr. Loomis’ grandkid but I was also a patient at Smiths grove and was the only one who was nice to Michael. So he takes an interest (feelings mutual tbh) but then finds out I’m related to loomis but instead of being upset he kicks things to an 11 and makes his interest obvious bc he knows loomis probably won’t do anything seeing as this is the most responsive Michaels ever been. What I’m trying to say is if you have time can you write like a continuation of that?

SO, I only really see this working (not to say that it won’t work with other versions of Mikey) with Zob Rombie’s Michael because he had a little bit more of a way of showing interest in things like his masks and stuff. Also, Michael, I don’t think hated Loomis in that movie, I think he was more indifferent about him.

If Michael hates Loomis, he would know that it would hurt Loomis more to kill you, his grandchild rather than just ending Loomis so he can’t feel too strongly about it if this were to be a possibility.

Being Nice ™ to Michael wouldn’t work all the way because the nice guy (Danny Trejoooooooo!!!) At the asylum babied him and tried to stop him from escaping because he thought that Michael would have loyalty, but just treat him with human decency like he isn’t a monster and I think he wouldn’t feel like you are trying to win him over or something.

I don’t see Loomis telling Michael so I think he would have to overhear it from someone else who thinks he’s too dumb to understand but he’s like ‘Oh, worm?’ when he finds out. He is intrigued; what do you look like? For a moment he just thinks of Loomis in a dress and pigtails.

But you’re a little older than he thought and he is surprised to see that you too are a patient here, perhaps not living here, but receiving some free mental health check-ups from dear old gramps.

So, he does what Michael does; watch, gather information. Show everyone that he is interested in you just to see everyone’s face when he pays more attention to you than anything else except maybe his mask making. He does notice that you treat him differently than everyone else, not like some huge behemoth that needs to be locked up forever, just another person and he appreciates it in his own way.

Loomis sees this as something worrying but at the same time, some form of progress. Michael, is actually responding to something for once? Unfortunately that something is his grandkid. Oh well.

Michael shows it by cooperating in exchange for time or glimpses of you, Loomis will let you talk to him or spend time with him just to record and document that yes, Michael is actually looking in his direction and not staring at his masks or at the window. And, Michael likes it when you observed the stuff he’s already done on the wall.

You think he’s the tallest man you’ve ever seen, standing with his hands at his sides. He’s got messy blond hair that splays out around his face so you almost can’t even see it. Your grandfather stands behind you, talking but you’re so distracted by the man and his big hands and long hair. Broad-shouldered but hunched over, how much taller is he if he stands up straight? You mutter a small hello and he doesn’t say anything but he tilts his head a millimeter to the left. You feel your grandpa’s hand on your shoulder, guiding you forward to his office and you follow. Your eyes stay on the man, however even as he passes down the hall behind you. His name is Michael, your grandpa tells you. He’s dangerous. That won’t stop you from wanting to see him again.

I remember in the ep we met him, vlad made a point of saying he was stuck in a hospital for a long time, so. that really actually sucks and I feel bad. not that it excuses anything he's done...but like. it does suck.

-vlad being so sure danny wouldnt help him he made it somehow contagious to his friends to make sure he'd get help? danny is a nice boy, he wouldve helped if it was anyone else. the only reason he wouldn't have is because of the shit vlad did to him, on purpose. vlad 100% dug his own grave by being the biggest asshole, so it is very hard to feel bad for him.

-clockwork is back!!! and making danny learn lessons The Hard Way. Uhhh, okay. I kind of get Danny’s logic, that time traveling this far back would prevent vlad from becoming a halfa also, ergo no arch nemesis or ectoacne to worry about. I assumed they met in college, since jack always calls vlad his college buddy/roommate, so jack and vlad for sure met in college, but did vlad know maddie longer? thats surprising if so. Tho we don’t know what year of college they’re in so they could mean they met as freshmen and a few years have past…speaking of maddie shes crushing the 80s look.

-vlad blames jack, but. maybe dont stick your face 2 inches from the portal??! THIS FEELS LIKE LAB SAFETY BASICS. IF SOMETHING HAS POTENTIAL TO BE DANGEROUS, DONT GET NEAR IT. -also, not to feel bad for alternate vlad (because, he did lie to maddie saying jack blames her and never wants to see her again...) but. being married to a woman 20+ years and she immediately goes back to jack? if she didnt love vlad and feels like she had to hide shit from him, and says she wasted her best years with him, WHY MARRY HIM. it feels like leading him on!!! cannot believe im feeling bad for vlad, but. this alternate timeline vlad is significantly Less Horrible than Our Vlad. did she not think she'd get funding for her ghost stuff? (which, fair assumption since they're considered 'ghost fanatics/nuts in canon...but...) why did she think jack or vlad would be her ONLY OPTIONS? be like your sister. be single. Actually, this au could’ve been really interesting if after the accident, vlad lied to her and said jack never wanted to see her again, but she stays single. Imagine how much that would bug vlad… like, in her mind, it was never a competition it was jack or no one type situation…

-danny being like 'leave him ALONE' this jack is a HOMEWRECKER, DANNY. let them go to court and settle this at the least. ...or just throw vlad into the portal. (100% human, defenseless vlad) CHRIST, MADDIE THATS BRUTAL. THATS MURDER.

-danny seeing his mom immediately accepting him and his dad being half ghosts in this universe, if I was him this would be a great sign that his universe's maddie would also.

-when clockwork ""reset time to the way it was"" just before danny "meddled"" ...did he really erase a whole alternate timeline? ...damn. because maddie and danny both called it an alternate timeline by name, it splitting when the college incident went different, so it wouldnt have really mattered if he reset it, right. like because danny's timeline is on a different stream? why didnt clockwork just. show danny a replay and not Reset That Timeline. wh...I wonder how many people that Erased From Existence. Anyway! once again stating clockwork is casually terrifying!
