Hi AKOM, I read Ian Leslie's article about "Now and Then," which you re-blogged, with great interest. Like you I believe it to be a fairly "sane take." Like many readers, I was struck by one passage specifically: "As far as we know, it wasn’t a sexual relationship, but it was a passionate one: intense, tender and tempestuous." The negation isn't necessary for Mr. Leslie to make his central point, which is that the Lennon/McCartney relationship can best be understood as a love affair. So why mention it at all? Because the idea of a sexual relationship (or attraction, even) between the two men is so offensive it has to be excluded, even though no one brought it up? Or as a circumspect way to introduce the idea to the discussion, buffered by the careful addition of "not, as far as we know?" I think it's the latter; I'd wager many readers do. And my feelings on this are mixed. Because the tone of "by no means do we want to suggest the presence of base carnal desires" is one of disapproval. Had this sentence not been in there, the love affair analogy would have spoken for itself, to be filled in by the reader at will. On the other hand, it's hard to ignore the possibility that these five words, "as far as we know," are the entire point of the article, which otherwise doesn't make a big effort to specify the exact shape of the love affair analogy. Passionate, yes. Breakup, yes. Hurt feelings and coded messages, yes. The Beatles' music as carrier of suppressed emotions—yes, but which ones? "In a sense, the music of the Beatles, which brings so much joy and consolation, is the glorious fruit of male repression. We like to think we live in a more emotionally enlightened age. We have learned to talk it out. Yet sometimes I think that is itself a kind of avoidance, or a failure of nerve. We’ve awakened from the dream, and yet seem to be more confused than ever." Is he talking about the current state of talking about John and Paul? What do you think? (I hope he expands on his analogy in his book.) P.S. I love your podcast and the hard work you put into it so listeners like me can feed their heads. Thank you for that! [P.P.S. I took out a digital subscription of the NYT because of this article, and no, I did very much not read the comments, nor do I intend to do so.]
Hello @crepesuzette2023! Thanks for writing! :) To be honest, the line "as far as we know, it wasn't sexual" didn't strike me as anything other than responsibly agnostic. I think if you ask the reader to reframe an already extremely famous creative partnership as a love affair, the natural follow-up question would be: sexual or platonic? In that event, stating he has no knowledge of it being sexual while also allowing for the possibility it might have been is exactly the right tone to take, IMO. Because that's the truth; we don't know either way. Honestly, I've been a bit bewildered by some of the tumblr response to this article. As I said, I think Ian Leslie's is a thoroughly sane take. Then again, I've been publicly talking about John and Paul as a love affair (on not just my own podcast but other peoples' as well) for years now, so maybe I'm in the belly of the beast. Don't get me wrong, it's very gratifying to read this in the NY Times! I'm excited by this shift towards open discussion in the public realm, but it's hardly scandalous. Leslie has been working on his book since 2021, I think. I don't agree with him on everything, but I think his takes on Lennon-McCartney are very good and sound. I recommend his piece on Get Back if you haven't read it. TBH, I'm not sure what the highlighted passage means. If I had to guess, I'd say he's talking about the way Beatles scholarship so far has refused to publicly accept Paul and John being in love, or contemplate what that means to their art or their lives because we have historically been too scared or cowardly. And maybe the act of creating timeless art as a display of love is much more powerful than being able to say the words to someone. But I don't really know. :) Also, this is just my (Phoebe's) response. Daphne and/or Thalia may have different takes. Thank you for the kind words about AKOM!

I'm gonna be honest, I don't have much hope for the Red, White and Royal Blue movie, if they ever even get around to releasing it. I think the guy who plays Henry was chosen because he played Pierce Brosnan's character's son Prince Charming in Cinderella bc tbh he looks like a Ken doll. Kissing Booth guy is way too beefcake and has zero sparkle to play Alex. Alex Claremont-Diaz is all about sparkle.
More than anything it's produced by Greg Berlanti, worst white gay to happen to network TV. Speaking as someone who was obsessed with his DCTv shows, Love, Simon was the only worthwhile thing he's ever done, and even that doesn't make up for his studio's treatment of Keiynan Lonsdale and literally every actor they've ever worked with, especially women and actors of colour. He and his merry band of ghouls need to go out of business yesterday. His brand of queer "representation" is pure white cis het respectability politics, built on sexual harrassment, racism, misogyny, worker exploitation and white privilege. I do not want this man and his toxic waste dump to get their hands on any more artists or crew of colour.
RW&RB works because it's a political wish fulfillment fantasy by a queer person that advocates for something more than just white liberal guff. Berlanti is nothing but that. Considering how much further left the young queer zeitgeist has moved since the book was published in 2019, what with the 2020 BLM protests and covid, the movie should also reflect that in order to represent queer people of colour. If not, you're just putting vulnerable people in the hands of racists and misogynists to tokenize characters of colour and erase our actual interests.
Anyway, my fancast for Alex is young Tyler Posey (bisexual Latino anyone?) and Henry is young William Moseley. Both are too old now to play the roles; fortunately the landscape of my imagination is much richer and more timeless than any live-action adaptation.

did some more research into the Bloodmoon Beast btw and holy shit you guys. first of all it’s from Sinnoh which like, isn’t that far from kitakami but it is still very much an overseas travel?? like the stamina and the swimming capabilities of this massive ground type Pokémon is phenomenal.
BUT the even more exciting part is that this Bloodmoon Beast came over from Sinnoh hundreds of years ago. And it’s still here today.
Do you know the lifespan of an Ursaring? It’s 20 - 30 years. Up to 50 if captured. This Ursaluna has survived for upwards of two hundred years in the wild.
Literally the only reasons we don’t have Ursaluna today is because they rarely evolve in the wild, the evolution method was lost to us, and wild Ursaluna were hunted to extinction due to human fear of their prodigious strength. Reading that fact in the history books always made me so sad for what we’d lost, so knowing an Ursaluna is still alive and kicking ass here in Kitakami?? makes me happy beyond belief.
Obviously not much is known about this beautiful beast due to the danger inherent in closely studying it, but research does suggest it’s taken on a protector-role in the Timeless Woods (similar to the Grimmsnarl in Tagtree), which is a very interesting role for a technically invasive species. I say technically, because at this point the Bloodmoon Beast is clearly an integral member of the ecosystem in the woods. Honestly, it doesn’t surprise me that it’s become a protector. Ground types are generally territorial. Though that does lead me to wonder why it left it’s home in the first place … maybe to escape the persecution that got the rest of its kind killed? (ack, now I’m sad again…)
Most photos of the Beast are of poor quality, but a few of note show it interacting with Trevenant (another species of Pokemon to be protectors of their home environment), suggestive a collaborative relationship which I think is just sweet tbh.
Anyway. Sorry to ramble, but man that’s a cool beast. I love ground types so much guys.

BMC BOOK RANT (I like it a lot)
tbh I feel like most people that find the BMC book too gross or the characters unlikable just... aren't in the age range? sure it's for teens in general, but definitely better suited for older teens. Characters may become annoying, but when you're in that moment in life (or you're already over it) where you can *really* understand the hatred and jealousy and selfishness of that age— you can't blame these guys. and the book does a good job of giving us plenty of perspectives, even if it's everything from Jeremy's pov!
I can't help but think most people who say it's just "porn with plot" are like 12 to 14 (but if you don't like it it's okay lmao even if you don't have a well fleshed out opinion idc). Because either way I don't get it? Unless you're on the asexual/aromantic spectrum (which I literally am! demi-romantic.) you might relate to all the sexual stuff— but not only that! I mean, all of the book is a metaphor for technology, which is so genius, and timeless! you could apply it to the current AI situation! It's a classic because it never gets old!
people say book!Christine is mean but... Honestly the only moment she was mean was maybe when Jeremy was telling her about the letter at the beginning? which yeah fair, she could have been nicer but it is also a weird thing to say, eh? the rest of the book, she was full of personality! and had great chemistry with Jeremy!
also Micheal, I might be biased because I kind of don't really like boyf riends (1. Because they remind me of me n my best friend and 2. idk they aren't good together) but I'm not that bummed that he wasn't as 'gay' as in the musical or 'nice' (which he is? he's much more sympathetic also?) or whatever. the asian fetish is definitely weird— but it's not like they act is normal... I will say I'm SO mad they didn't make him a weezer fan in the musical that would have been so fun. I just prefer book!Micheal because the fandom takes his musical counterpart and babies him to death (happens with all the characters honestly).
this isn't to shit on the musical, I love it! but it's completely different, It's a whole nother message. book might have not had the diversity the musical had (a bummer) but also like— it *was* the original lol. It's not like the author erased anything.
Overall, such a good book... like geniunly... really spoke to me.

dw rewatch - takes on "the end of the world"
companion watch:
"the artic desert" hits different lol
something something bella vs the witch
rose's fear attack when she finds heres lf in the alien situation. she's genuinely terrified! it's a good beat, man. more than that, it's a rare beat. I get a lot of people don't vibe with it and prefer the more "buffy-esque approach, since it's "more to the point" and gets you larger than life figures… but personally I much prefer it when scifi/fantasy scenarios are portrayed as the terrifying reality they would be. also this: "ROSE: I just hitched a ride with a man. I don't even know who he is. He's a complete stranger"
war of the world vibes with the little robot fellas. /unintentional parallel to how cassandra dies and how the aliens in that book die?
"it gets inside and changes my mind, and you didnt even ask" "i didnt think about it like that" it's interesting that rose question this tbh
"five billion years in the future, my mum's dead" "bundle of laughs you are" /god i love this exchange. nine's constant attempt to downplay ANY surfacing of Real Emotions. rose's naivety in contemplating for the first time in her life that oh yeah, people die. the first statement of the "everything dies, everything ends" theme that will be woven throughout all the rtd era.
ngl i wish rose Did More in the plot of this episode, in terms of actually solving the crisis, feels like a stepdown after Rose giving her the most climatic moment... that said she does get a lot of great quibs in this one: "you two go pollinate and i'll go meet the family"/ "and i want you home by midnight!"/ "its better to die than to live like you, a bitchy trampoline" / "youre just lipstick and skin"
she's really similar to nine/ten in that aspect. they both have that "humor as defense mechanism" thing
blorbos:
the way nine and rose Lean in those stairs…. im Looking respectfully and im Thinking pure thoughts. (honestly ppl talk a lot about ten and rose's body language in s2 but there was A Lot going on with nine and rose as early as episode 1)
"all that counts is here and now" can't tell if zen mindfulness or a desperate defense mechanism to cope with ptsd.
first thing rose does is call her mum ): - Cassandra "I'm too young" vs Ten's "I was going to do so much more"...(ben wyatt voice) it's about the hypocrisy (oh having written this note before rewatching new earth... put a pin on that!)
timeless child retroactive continuity bonus: perhaps cassandra as "the last human" (not really a "human") paralleling "the last timelord" (not really a "timelord)? - "JABE: And what about your ancestry, Doctor? Perhaps you could tell a story or two. Perhaps a man only enjoys trouble when there's nothing else left". well post-s13 they're gonna enjoy themselves a lot more lol - there's something very anti-entropy about how the child gets to regenerate indefinitely without "losing" its essence and its dna integrity (vs cassandra's "flatness", the child gains more and more complexity as time passes).
colonialism/hegemony: - NINE: "mind you, when I say "the great and the good" what I mean is the rich." / "Five billion years and it still comes down to money" / this maybe be harsh,,, honestly i hate to say but doctor who sometimes really is just typical neolib """anti-capitalist""" fiction. - in the sense that it pretends to be anti-capitalist, but really is just capitalist realist. it's writers can imagine 203223 scenarios of the earth dying but they cannot conceive of a post-capitalist world, a classless society or simply a world without taxes. Of course you could say "this is so these stories are relatable" but even in their relatedness, there's rarely a portrayal of the anti-capitalist struggle (rather than just generic star wars-style, ideology-less "rebellions).- (that said, obligatory "I'm not a politics robot" disclaimer... "Do you think it's cheap, looking like this? Flatness costs a fortune." is an iconic retort lol) - there's also a kind of subtle Myth Of The Linear Progress Of History thing going on with cassandra being framed as someone who "stayed behind" and has not embraced this analogue to our "Color Blind Post Racial Society" which has "Obviously" outgrown prejudice and notions of racial purity. - "good thing i didn't take you to the deep south" / "you were to busy making cheap shots about the deep south" // parallels to-> "who do you think makes your clothes?" "Is that why you travel 'round with a human at your side? It's not so you can show them the wonders of the universe, it's so you can take cheap shots?" "sorry" . actually no rtd i dont think these are chepashots at all lol they are VERY relevant shots!! it's very transparent how the writers are kind of meek about making these *truly* transgressive points, but it's much easier to have the doctor argue that rose having a donor card is "a different morality"... again one is truly transgressive, the other is fun-but-no-challenging-of-the-hegemony scifi "dilemma". - the "quick word with Michael Jackson" line is doing A Lot but idek how to even begin to entangle it lol it's very 00s, for sure. - for once, a self aware one: "People have died, Cassandra. You murdered them." / "It depends on your definition of people, and that's enough of a technicality to keep your lawyers dizzy for centuries"
themes: - everything has its time and everything ends check your bingo cards. racial purity vs mixing vs 'progress'. class. life cycles. gut instinct (rose jumping the gun to empatise w/ the doc + nine going through the fans + rose reaction to the alien parade). destruction as tourism, as "artistic event" (an uncomfortable parallel to how this is what our heroes will be doing for the next 10+ seasons). - this episode does a bit of a u-turn on the previous (And the next) on its constant questioning of the intrinsic "meaning" of a physical body. in this, cassandra's continuous operations are framed as a kind of "lost of an essence". also the "surface" of her thinking as metaphor for her missing the "essence" of what it means to be human (biologically but more fundamentally, ethically).
Live Fast Die Young / YOLO / everyone deserves to be mourned. everyone deserves a dignified death. thread carefully and cherish life, because it will all be gone. our time is limited and short and it is because it is short that it means something. Life only means anything because there's Death.
ecology and environmentalism. "there are many species in that planet. mankind is only one / I'm a direct descendant of the tropical rainforest." obsessed with it. wish they brought back the rainforest.

Hey! I wanna get to know my Swiftie mutuals. Tell me your top 5 songs and albums from her. Feel free to go into depth/explain if you'd like!
hey!!! meowdy! ( yup, i read your bio and agree) nice to meet you! i'm sorry for all my lore but it is hard to talk about things i love without bringing personal matters with it. i feel like i can talk about taylor lyrics without trauma dumping so i am truly sorry for the things i wrote. but since you said you want to know your mutuals here i go!
TOP ALBUMS
1 - folklore: it is such an ethereal experience for me. i love how all the stories in it are connected in some way and the way she could create so many details for all the characters tbh i feel like i could have been any one of them and in some ways i am. i love how every song feels like summer rain, is comforting and vulnerable. i was the first album of her that i felt i could relate to 100%. is my all time favorite.
(now the positions after folklore vary depending of the day for me so i may change them later)
2 - the tortured poets department: i know is new and everyone is freaking out about it but for me that's one of the most honest pieces of music i have ever listen to it. i keep caught on all these debates about to whom she wrote it but is so stupid because these songs were never about anyone BUT taylor. she could have dated anyone and still wrote these masterpieces, it isn't about a man, it is about taylor swift. and she put SO MUCH of her heart in it that i can feel it. all that anger, all that pain, all that fear it all came from her. she is the artist. i know some critics say is easy to write 31 songs if they all look similar (haters gonna hate is so fucking true) but for me as an inspiring artist is a relief to know you can create different things about the same topic and don't feel ashamed about it. you can write about the same theme a thousand times and guess what? it can be a thousand times different because it will be a thousand different parts of yourself. everything about ttpd is so beautiful ( plus dead poets society references makes it perfect bc is my favorite movie)
3 - evermore: follows the folklore aesthetic and vibes. marjorie? champagne problems??? tolerate it???? Does she have a hidden camera in my backpack or something?
4 - speak now: i'm nineteen wtf she wrote something like THAT when she was nineteen?????? this album is so magical, It has some of the fantasy she later put on folklore and evermore but with more joy and cheerful melodies. listening to speak now is like opening my favorite book over and over. i wish i could be emma falling in love and i wish to live a timeless love and i wish i could sing long live with my friends/found family after winning a battle. i just love it all so much and never grown up? i listened to it when i was packing my things to move out of my hometown so you can imagine how much i relate to it. castles crumbling is also so close to my heart because i constantly feel i'm burning bridges and fucking things up. so yep all these fears of loneliness and failure goes present in this album goes deep .
5 - midnights: as a HUGE fan of the moon ( the moon is my true soulmate and i don't care if it "just a sattelite"or a "bunch of rocks and dust glued together" because guess what? i'm also a bunch of universal dust glued together) the whole celestial aesthetic of the album hits me like a train. all these confessions, these letters, these maniacal thoughts i have after the sun sets are not only mine. i love how she hugged me through these lyrics and showed me that everyone is haunted by ghosts after midnight. but the night time isn't just a place for nightmares, there is also hope, and joy and good dreams.
TOP SONGS
1 - mirrorball : since the first time i listened to it all i could think about is "someone finally sees me"
2 - the archer: she saw right through me. i am so scared of being seen because if someone sees me, if someone truly knows me it would hurt 1000 times more being rejected by them.
3 - you're on your own, kid: i lost all my friends after high school, literally no one of the fucking people i used to talk to every day and go to their houses and remember their birthdays. all of the people i used to open up to, the people i used to cry and laugh with just didn't reach out anymore and i know it is half my fault but it made me realize how truly alone i am as a human. It doesn't matter how much you connect with someone you are always on your own at the end of the day and she literally summarized that feeling in a fucking song.
4 - i can do it with a broken heart: because you still can be a mirrorball even when the ones you built the show for have left.
5 - the lakes: dead poets society vibes and i'm also a poet and i also want to run away.
6 - renegade: (you asked for 5 but here is a bonus track for you haha <3) i sing that song is a platonic way because it translates so much of my relationships with my friends and family. i sing along thinking about them and i know they could sing thinking about me because of trauma and miscommunication is such a top topic in all that.

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @viola-ophelia <3 Thank you!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 58 on my primary page, 38 on my trash page, and 5 on my catch-all.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? LOL if you think I'm going to add up the word count of 101 total fics, you're crazy! So instead, I'll just say my longest fic on my primary page is 96,771, my trash page is 34,787, and my catch-all is 11,722, for a total of 143,280. So with that being for just three fics, I shudder to think what my actual word count is for 101 fics lol.
3. What fandoms do you write for? Lately, TURN: Washington's Spies, though past fandoms have been H.annibal, E.mma 2020, and The M.agicians, to name a few.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? I'm just going to stick to my main page for this:
Wake-up Call (From D.usk till D.awn: the Series) (438)
Changing Winds (S.tranger T.hings) (384)
Lost in the Dark (S.tranger Things) (284)
Anyone But You (That 70s Show) (265)
To Thaw and Burst into Bloom (S.tranger Things) (235)
^^The funny thing is, none of these were fandoms I was overly into/participated in much, but they're way more popular than my favored fandoms, which is why none of what I'm TRULY proud of is listed in my top kudos ranking. Ah well.
5. Do you respond to comments? I do! In the past, I've always made friends through reviews/reviewing, so I always respond to comments and leave comments on works I've enjoyed. :) I really wish engagement/fic friendships were more encouraged these days.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Uhh, probably Folie a Deux (H.annibal) or To K.iss, to Consume (Turn). OH, and Let the Weary Rest (Turn), where I killed off Ben lol.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? After 2020, pretty much all of my fics had happy endings. The World is Made Wrong made me happiest though, I'd say.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I'd rather not jinx myself, but I haven't since I was a kiddo! And that hate was deserved tbh, cuz they were just telling me I wrote xyz wrong since I was a child/didn't bother to research.
9. Do you write s.mut? *gestures vaguely at my trash page* Uh. Yeah. lol I don't really have a specific type I write, beyond M/F, if that's what you're asking -- the specific scenarios are typically a case-by-case basis.
10. Do you write crossovers? I used to write quite a few! Nowadays, I save that more for things like RP and edits, though I do still enjoy them. Sometimes, crossovers work better than canon, I said what I said.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I have! But I was like 13 at the time, and the person posted it in the same ship/fandom, so Idk what their plan was lol. Fortunately, they deleted it the day I reviewed.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! A few times, actually (all for the H.annibal fandom).
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Sure have! They're all RP-turned-fics though, cuz I've never actually asked someone to write something who wasn't an RPer themselves.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Probably David/Maddie from Moonlighting. They're timeless! <3
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I suppose my time travel romcom. It's basically me rewriting a book I've already created, but altering it for the Turn universe. Even though it's fun, it's kind of boring repurposing my old work, and most especially when there's so little engagement. I flourish on comments, alas. Other than that, I mostly tend to finish my works!
16. What are your writing strengths? An editor once told me my strengths are my dialogue and humor. She equated the first 20 pages of my book (a recent work) to a Shakespearean comedy, which really tickled me, ngl.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? World-building! I've improved with this by a lot, but I genuinely do think fic writers are conditioned to stop describing settings/appearance thanks to our audiences already KNOWING, and thus, our OG works suffer for it. Mine certainly do!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I wouldn't do it personally, since I doubt it'd translate well, but I encourage others to do it! I'll still read!
19. First fandom you wrote for? C.owboy B.ebop.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Probably The World is Made Wrong, since I've since reworked it and I'm still very proud of how that second run-through turned out (not the one available on AO3 -- that version is all its heinous first draft glory lol).

YOU GUYS. There's a Tintin spoof in Teen Titans Spotlight #11!
It's Spotlight on Brotherhood of Evil. Warp teleports himself, Brain, Mallah, Phobia out of a shoot-out in France and accidentally get transported to an alternate universe. Getting hit by one of the assassin's lasers had scrambled Warp's brain and he now he can't remember how to get back. Before they can work the problem, they immediately get caught in a kerfuffle between some weird mutant people and a redhead riding a wolf. They manage to dispatch the mutant people in short order.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus!
Tumblr media
Apparently, in this world, things went pear-shaped after Explorers On The Moon.
Tumblr media
The moon landing year given is the same one as when the story first started being published in serialised form, a full 14 years before the real moon landing happened. I find it interesting that Herge very deliberately left out any fantastical or impossibly sci-fi elements, making what was a futuristic story for its time feel incredibly grounded in reality, but this comic takes an international intrigue plot and goes entirely bananas.
Tumblr media
SNOWY WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GENERAL RASTAPOPuOULOS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tintin & The Mad Max Fury Road!
The Brotherhood decide to help out just to survive and steal the tech they need to unscramble Warp's powers from the Ark to get home. With Brain and Mallah leading the show, Tin and the freedom fighters take the citadel and bitchslap Rastapopoulos. Predictably, he tries to pull a Lex Luthor on Tin.
Tumblr media
Apparently villains hate listening to other villains monologuing.
They're reunited with Professor Calculus. Aww.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mallah's reaction to self-sacrificing heroic bullshit is so funny. And relatable tbh. 😂
When everything's done and dusted it turns out the whole thing was orchestrated by Dr. Mist with the help of French intelligence as a social experiment or something. Neat twist, but meh.
Incidentally I pity everyone who didn't grow up reading the Tintin comics. It's truly a timeless, all-ages series with no pandering or infantilization. Explorers is my favourite book after Red Rackham's Treasure. It's art and writing calibre is a stark contrast with this pulpy '80s DC comic. Though ngl, I missed seeing Thompson and Thomson.

which do you prefer, more modern fairytale aesthetics, or the very old fairytale aesthetics?
Tbh, I really love old fairytale aesthetics! Or at least it's what I'm drawn to first. Like the old cloth-bound books, old illustrations, etchings, historical settings, etc.! I love classic fairytale and folklore vibes!
I have nothing against modern fairytale aesthetics or retellings, but I just don't find them as comforting as older aesthetics. (and also i just struggle to vibe with more modern fairytale retellings or retellings with a modern-day setting in general because i feel like the people that write them fail the fairytale they're trying to retell because they're missing the point as to why the story is/was important, and why it's timeless... it's more than just rehashing the Disney version of it.)
I hope this is the kind of answer you were looking for!!!!!! Sorry if i misread or misinterpreted anything!!

OK OK @korrasamibottles has tagged me (😊) so y’all get to know me better now.
Three ships: Not to copycat but Xena and Gabrielle. Unmatched, unparalleled, timeless. Ronon/Sheppard do it for me, guys. They have a Thing going on and I won’t hear otherwise. And obviously McShep but sometimes that’s just because I feel influenced by this band of doofuses (affectionate) that I follow.
First ever ship: Nick/Greg. CSI. Still about it TBH.
Last Song: Electric Feel by MGMT. Was feeling college nostalgia last night and it still bops.
Last film: Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn and Richard Crenna
Currently reading: Ha! Good one. I tried and failed to read several books recently. Most recently finished I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy.
Currently watching: Stargate Atlantis and a select few episodes of The Simpsons. Almost Xena time again thank god.
Currently consuming: Four Roses bourbon and a side of Sour Diesel.
Currently craving: Would commit atrocities for a good sandwich and fries rn.
Tagging @spurious @wonkyelk @sga-owns-my-soul @lunarriviera and literally anyone who wants to. 🎵I just wanna know you better now.

Hi, so you finally got me to read your Pretty Woman AU, which means you pulled me back into reading fanfiction for the first time ever since a very unfortunate dabbling in Wattpad territory at the age of 15. And I didn’t think I would like it that much, to be honest, because I’ve only ever seen snippets of Pretty Woman and because I’m not usually into stuff that horny. But excuse me, how is this so beautiful and perfect and addictive??? I can now get in line with all the other people begging for the new chapter on a daily basis.
I mean, even though you keep saying you forget about the plot all the time, it’s still there and it’s wonderful and already the idea is brilliant. Like I said, I have never seen the entirety of Pretty Woman, but I love how you weave KinnPorsche and that movie together so seamlessly while somehow staying true to both?
And I know this is a minor detail to most people, but I personally can’t stand spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes etc. in stories, so I love that somehow you manage to make less of them (= partically zero, even the questionable ones I wasn’t sure about) than a huge amount of professionally published books I’ve read. Thank you for that. Also, I just generally love your style of writing and your tone, it’s a pure delight to read.
That said, I will now go hide in a corner, anxiously await the new chapter and hope you’re having a great day (and that it’s no longer ruined because of the coffee spill).
P.S.: One question, though. Could you maybe explain to me how exactly Kinn’s penthouse is laid out and where everything is inside it? I keep getting confused because my brain is weird and then rooms and furniture end up on the opposite sides of where I expected them to be.
Oh god not Wattpad! 😂 That place is abysmal, I’m so sorry for whatever horrors you stumbled across. But WOW wtf this is????? Incredible???? Not to sound cheesy but I really am honored that you gave fanfic another shot with FL&H, that absolutely blows my mind. I hope you check out some more KP fics too—there’s tons of goodies in there if you’re interested! (I’m very far behind on my TBR but I’d rec anything in my bookmarks for a start!)
Pretty Woman has always been such a comfort watch for me honestly. I first saw it when I was like 8, which in hindsight was too young lol, but it’s just one of those movies that’ll always be a timeless classic imo. It’s one of the greats to come out of the 90s romance boom and I’m just really gassed that Kinnporsche happens to translate so well to that setup. It was shockingly easy to outline and find all the ways to sync up the story/character beats, and I love including little Easter eggs from both stories (like Porsche’s “then stop calling me” moment in ep 5, and Chan teaching Porsche self-defense instead of table manners, and obv the piano scene lol).
I’m kind of the same about grammar/punctuation hang-ups just because of the field I work in, but I try really hard to get over it with fanfic because it’s free and made with love, you know? And besides, I’ve read manuscripts from some brilliant authors who cannot spell or use commas right to save their lives lol, so I’m pretty used to looking past the little things for the sake of the story. Thank god for copy editors tbh. But I’m glad you haven’t spotted a lot of typos! I don’t really copy edit other than skimming it after I post so there’s always a good chance I’ve missed something really egregious lol.
As for Kinn’s penthouse suite, I just sketched this out on my phone so it’s not super accurate dimension-wise lol but below is what I picture in my head. (If you see anything in early chapters that contradicts this…no you didn’t 😉)
Tumblr media
The north- and east-facing walls are complete glass, and probably have some kind of shades/curtains that come down when you hit the button, but as we all know Kinn and Porsche are exhibitionists and want to make sure the entire city sees them fucking, especially the banks. 😌
Hope that helps! So glad you’re liking the fic, and an update is coming soon, I promise! Chapter 9 is officially the longest one yet fml 😩

Hi! :D Hope you're doing well. I'm kinda sorta new to Star Trek (watching ToS at the moment.) I was wondering if you could tell me which novels with Kirk/Spock/Spirk/Bones can I read? I tried looking it up but there are just so many that I'm very confused where to begin. It'd be nice if you could tell me. Have a nice day!
Hello! Welcome to the world of Star Trek! TOS was my first, so excellent choice :))
Honestly, I haven't read that many Trek books but I can definitely give you a few pointers based on what I know, especially if you're looking for the more Spirk-y ones.
A good place to start could be the books with fan connections, such as:
Killing Time (the most infamous TOS novel, known for being very shippy especially in the unedited first edition! but tbh it's not that much wilder than some others I've seen. Would recommend tho!). I kinda liveblogged the reading of this so feel free to check my tags #killing time and #nic reads killing time
The New Voyages 1 & 2, compiled/introduced by Myrna Culbreath and Sondra Marshak (two collections of officially published fanfic - the first non-episode-novelisation Trek stories to be officially published and possibly some of the first officially published fanfic out there. Each story is introduced by a member of the cast & crew! An absolutely wild ride) Again I shared some extracts, see #the new voyages
Other TOS books I have my eye on are:
The Price of the Phoenix and The Fate of the Phoenix by Myrna Culbreath and Sondra Marshak
and anything by Diane Duane, author of Spock's World among others (did you know she's also on tumblr?)
There are also the episode novelisations by James Blish, around seven or so novelisations of the TOS episodes collected in each short volume (I believe there are 11 in total?). These are quite straightforward, but do sometimes have some fun additions to the scenes! The books are simply titled Star Trek 1, Star Trek 2, and so forth. I currently own 3 and 4, but personally I think I prefer the original stories to the novelisations so far.
Oh, and not forgetting the TOS movie novelisations! These are absolute gems and well worth a read. The 'The Motion Picture' novelisation by Gene Roddenberry is where the term t'hy'la comes from! It's a wild ride for sure.
Here's a list of all the novelisations, from James Blish to the movies and beyond
I also have my #star trek books tag, which as the name says I've been using to collect all the book extracts I'm interested in - some I've read, some I want to
Anyway I hope this is helpful! This is by no means a definitive list, just what I've read and what I'm interested in so far! (there is actually a really good list floating around tumblr but I believe it's stored within the depths of my likes, will add to this post if I find it)
And honestly, don't feel like you've gotta collect/read every book, just go where the joy is! The blessing/curse of getting into Star Trek is there's probably more content (shows/films, books, zines, etc etc) than I could ever consume in one lifetime, but it's so exciting to be a small part of something so big and timeless! Enjoy!

going to reference something very niche and very You Had To Be There At The Time so like i'm aware that probably no one will know what i'm talking about but well. does anyone remember the first teaser for love simon, not the trailer, the halloween themed teaser. the trailer for that movie came out in like early november i remember i was there, there was a teaser they dropped in october for halloween and it was everyone at the halloween party scene asking each other "who are you supposed to be?" and then it was cleverly tied into the movie's concepts of identity and perception... anyway i think about this like, 30 second teaser like once a week although she is completely lost to me forever i fear. it was so cleverly done.... WHO are YOU supposed to be........ genius. i'm not gonna rewatch love simon i'm just thinking about it. we do not put enough respect on my buddy simon's name tbh. he gave you on of the best riverdale episodes ever... he paved the way for heartstopper... and yet you don't care about him.... my good close friend simon. from my book from when i was. well 15. i know it sounds like i'm always referring to things that had meaingful impact on my life as something from when i was 15 i know i sound like i'm making shit up i am not i swear.... i had a lot going on when i was 15. i feel kinda bad for not putting simon in the timeless video now. he barely connects to either kit or ty i would have only been including him as part of like, the canon of me being 15, i should have but well to be honest i just forgot. sorry simon. i love you. anyway. greg berlanti i'll never forgive you for what you did to my friend leah but well katherine langford i could never be mad at you babygirl it's not your fault... ok that's all

can i ask you a question since you reread the rwrb book recently? i reread the book in preparation for the movie. i remember loving the book when it first came out but on a reread it comes across as a bit... cringe? am i alone on this? idk if casey mcquiston was/is active in tumblr fandom but it comes across that way since they write the rwrb characters like that. I swear prince henry's emails about harry potter/star wars are taken straight from a 15 year old's tumblr post. it just doesn't make sense to me that a prince in his 20s would talk like that. i feel like the pop culture references date the book terribly even though it's only like 5 years old? also the constant quips between alex/june/nora can be exhausting to read, especially because it's in every conversation. i still love the book but i much prefer the movie dialogue tbh because it comes across as way more natural to how people in these positions would actually talk (obviously with a comedic tone). I also appreciate that the movie took out the overt pop culture references, it comes across as more appealing and somewhat more timeless, even though it's clearly taking place in modern day. idk i just feel like i could rewatch the movie in 10 years and enjoy it. but i feel like in order to read the book again i have to remind myself that its essentially published tumblr fanfiction from the 2010s.
I can't really relate since I loved the book just as much if not more in my reread haha, I do see what you mean about how the pop culture references date it but I don't particularly think that takes away from the reading experience for me. I agree that sometimes dialogue has to be changed for the film, I think this is often the case with adaptations where things that work in writing but in a spoken conversation they have to be reworked to feel natural. I don't know either whether casey mcquiston had tumblr at any point but tbh I don't get the published fanfiction vibe — I just feel that the characters are at heart meant to be regular (albeit very intelligent and well educated) young people who do just like to talk about regular stuff like pop culture.
