Scarab #6
Tumblr media
I don't know what's happening on this cover but I definitely have a new sexual fetish.
Tumblr media
This comic book stars a raccoon. Rating: A+.
Most of the weird dialogue in this comic book probably comes from John Smith's high school notepads full of terrible poetry. I mean, this part about winter isn't too bad! I kind of like it. It's almost as if William Carlos Williams and H.P. Lovecraft were caught in a Star Trek transporter malfunction where their minds were melded but they had to overcome the horror of their new two-dicked physical existence to continue writing poetry. I knew John Smith was English from his previous work on 2000 A.D. and other British comic book periodicals but then he uses the phrase "Chinese whispers" in this issue and I think, "If I hadn't already known he was English from his previous work on 2000 A.D. and other British comic book periodicals, I'd now know he was English by his use of the phrase 'Chinese whispers.'" Here are some of the ideas John Smith throws into a two-page account of Scarab's recent adventures that he couldn't bother writing into full scripts but wanted everybody to know he thought up anyway: a television at the Waldorf haunted by the 20th Century, a pervert breaking the spirits of kids with his Zoo of Shame, The Phantom Barber stealing scalps from runway models, the world's sexiest man raped by Tarot cards, and the Electric Fetus Machine which manifests as a large organ whose music foments rebellion in fetuses. Is this how the British writers took over DC's adult comic books? By occluding our minds with so much random and weird pseudo-philosophical garbage that we couldn't think straight? Sure, I guess an Electric Fetus Machine sounds like a way better story than Batman beating The Riddler near to death. But is there really any substance there? I suppose there could be if the idea were fleshed out and some kind of theme built around the idea of fetuses rebelling. Maybe all of these ideas John Smith throws out are just a game of Chinese whispers where he takes, say, a story by John Barth from Lost in the Funhouse about the thoughts of a sperm considering how the race toward life is pointless and, maybe, they should all just give up, and he turns it into the Electric Fetus Machine so that when I read it, I don't instantly think, "Isn't this a John Barth story?" Instead, I think, "That's a better sounding story than the one where the guy is raped by the Three of Wands!"
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Scarab spends his downtime watching Eleanor turn into a Dr. Seuss tree. Or a mushroom cloud (because remember the theme established by the beginning quote and title?!).
Try to ignore Scarab's ass in the previous scan. It's phenomenal. If you're training to be a comic book artist, you need to spend a lot of time getting the ass right. And once you do, you'll never get an ass in pants right again because all you have ever learned to draw is a naked ass which readers will know is actually under skin tight Lycra unless the colorist completely shits the bed. The guy in the jar on the cover is a Russian experiment in psychotropic warfare called a Gloryboy. There are three of them and they're some kind of pacifist dream come true. They constantly mutter Vertigo phrases in a tonal frequency that makes normal people vomit and shit themselves. It's the Brown Note theory of winning battles but taken to the Vertigo extreme. Instead of a whomping bass sound system, the noise comes form a naked albino in a jar composed of dream matter. Maybe they're not composed of dream matter. And maybe they're not about pacifism at all. It seems they've been altered and experimented in such a way that they can give voice to "the Scream over Hiroshima!" That sounds pretty bad. It's probably some form of psychic bombardment, comparable to a nuclear blast, which drives everybody in the vicinity completely insane. Or maybe it really will just be a thing that pacifies everybody because have you ever tried to do anything while shitting yourself? I mean other than read the ingredients in your shampoo. And even then, I bet you take your eyes off the bottle for a moment to really be in the moment. As an aside, do women find shitting as enjoyable as men or is it just the fecal matter pressing up against our prostate as it passes that makes a big shit feel so good? The Russians test the Scream Over Hiroshima on London. What it does is project into the minds of everybody who hears it the entire reality of what happened in Hiroshima. It's the truth of war. It's pure horror and death and consequence. It probably also makes everybody shit themselves. But when it's done, they'll all understand, on a physically primal level what war is. And the assumption is that everybody will finally be against it, I guess? I've been on Twitter for many years and the one thing I know is that even physically experiencing the horrors of the bombing of Hiroshima isn't going to change the minds of most idiots. I mean, if you didn't become a vegan pacifist hug machine after hearing Sting's song, "Russians," why would you become one after living the horror of fifty thousand lives snuffed out in an instant?! Some people, you just can't reach. London turns into a burning chaotic mess as everybody flips the fuck out from suddenly experiencing the most painful thing they've ever experienced. Scarab arrives after it's all over and everybody is afraid of him. Surprise! There's nothing he can do. He just observes the mess and meets a psychic who tells him that Eleanor is coming back. And isn't that the most important part of this eight issue story? That Louis the Scarab's love returns to him while the rest of the world falls into death and chaos? Scarab #6 Rating: C. Smith seeded this issue with more story ideas than story. The main story is an idea that really goes nowhere as well. It's a thought experiment. It's a minor philosophical musing. And Scarab doesn't do anything but distract himself from his wife's condition. But it also wasn't uninteresting. So I think that means it's a C? What am I, a high school teacher? I don't know how to grade shit!

For the week of 15 July 2019
Quick Bits:
Age of X-Man: Omega #1 concludes the event with this finale one-shot from Zac Thompson, Lonnie Nadler, Simone Buonfantino, Tríona Farrell, and Clayton Cowles. It’s a confrontation between many of the groups within this world and X-Man as they discover the nature of the world and discuss some philosophical concepts of conflict and identity.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Aquaman #50 begins “Amnesty” from Kelly Sue DeConnick, Robson Rocha, Eduardo Pansica, Daniel Henriques, Julio Ferreira, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. It’s damn good. Arthur returns home here and there’s a reintegration of old supporting cast members, Wonder Woman, and further information about what’s going on in Atlantis. Also the set up for an interesting story possibly further down the line. Great art from Rocha, Pansica, Henriques, Ferreira, and Gho.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Assassin Nation #5 is the end to what has been a fun and humorous action-packed series from Kyle Starks, Erica Henderson, and Deron Bennett. More great action with some surprises along the way.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Tumblr media
Batman #75 begins “City of Bane” from Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, Mitch Gerads, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles. It sets up a new status quo in Gotham with Bane at the helm and a bizarre slotting of various villains into traditional roles.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Badge #12 concludes this series with one last mission from the combined forces of all of colour badges, showing us how a coordinated effort really should have taken place before the groups’ purpose was co-opted. This has been a great series from Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, and Jim Campbell.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Black Science #41 sets up an interesting and somewhat surprising new reality after last issue. I kind of expect that we’ll see another big twist as we head towards the finale in the next two issues. Rick Remender, Matteo Scalera, Moreno Dinisio, and Rus Wooton give us an interesting look at “paradise” this issue.

Tumblr media
Blade Runner 2019 #1 begins a new time period and introduces a new Blade Runner in this alt-present tale from Michael Green, Mike Johnson, Andres Guinaldo, Marco Lesko, and Jim Campbell. Ash is an interesting character and this interpretation of the mythos is wonderful. Also, the artwork from Guinaldo and Lesko perfectly fits this neon apocalypse world.
| Published by Titan
Tumblr media
Bloodborne #13 begins the next arc, “The Veil, Torn Asunder”, as an unnamed veteran searches through the madness of Yarnham and beyond. Beautiful artwork from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson, really bringing the existential horrors to life.

Daredevil #8 goes in a very interesting direction as Matt accepts a dinner invitation from the married bookseller he keeps flirting with, leading to an assassination attempt and captivating dinner conversation about rules and responsibility. Chip Zdarsky, Lalit Kumar Sharma, Jay Leisten, Java Tartaglia, and Clayton Cowles are really delivering an interesting story here.

Excellence #3 delves into some of the details of how the Aegis deals with rogue magic users. Brandon Thomas, Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez, and Deron Bennett are doing some very interesting world and character building here.
| Published by Image / Skybound

Fairlady #4 is another great issue. The humour that Brian Schirmer provides in the dialogue is wonderful. This one dives into the mystery of mystery novel missing its final page and there’s one hell of an ending.

Ghost Tree #4 concludes this excellent series from Bobby Curnow, Simon Gane, Ian Herring, Becka Kinzie, and Chris Mowry. There are a lot of goodbyes in this issue, some pleasant, some not, and some heartrending choices and consequences. Very well done.

Gideon Falls #15 checks in with Father Fred’s nightmares. The different time periods and streams, and their crossings-over at this point, are fascinating, even as things become even more chaotic and horrifying. Gorgeous art from Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart.

Tumblr media
Immortal Hulk #21 has gorgeous guest art from Ryan Bodenheim as we get a story filling in this past of Fortean and a dangerous change in the present. Al Ewing also brings forward some of the recurring subtext of form and substance through the Bible and Kabbalah to give a deeper understanding of some of the themes here.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Infinite Dark #8 brings an end to the second arc, with a revelation of the nightmarish creatures trying to destroy the station and a choice for how to proceed with the potential survival or annihilation of the remaining human race. Wonderful work from Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, K. Michael Russel, and Troy Peteri.

Tumblr media
Invaders #7 begins a new arc, “Dead in the Water”, dealing with the fallout of Atlantis’ assault on the surface. There are some more hints of Namor’s problems, the return of another Invader, and hints at some nefarious things on the horizon. I love the introduction of Tony Stark into the mess in the present, adding another conflict to deal with. Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue to deliver some solid storytelling here.

Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Sirens #4 features an interpretation of the myth of Lorelei by Aud Koch (with letters from Jim Campbell). It’s wonderfully told, with beautiful, magical artwork.

Justice League #28 concludes “Apex Predator” from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Daniel Sampere, Juan Albarran, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. This one’s basically integral to the core “Year of the Villain” story as Lex gives his offer to J’onn.

The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #5 picks up some of the pieces for the remaining few of Toyo’s forces, as they try to make a plan for what’s to come next. It should be interesting to see what the next step is in the finale. Gorgeous artwork from CAFU, Kano, and Andrew Dalhouse.

Little Bird #5 brings this ambitious and unique story from Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, and Aditya Bidikar to an end. The personal nature of this story as Little Bird comes to terms with her family has been a very enthralling element in this fight for freedom, and the sacrifices that one makes. Stunning artwork from Bertram and Hollingsworth.

Loki #1 is an entertaining beginning to this new series spinning out of War of the Realms from Daniel Kibblesmith, Oscar Bazaldua, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles. It dives in to Loki’s new role as King of Jotunheim and how he’s humorously approaching his duties. There’s a nice set-up for something coming that’s dismissed as a trick.

Outpost Zero #11 reveals the discovery of life outside of the outpost, which leads to an unexpected reaction and sign of more conspiracies to keep the entire populace in the dark. Sean Kelly McKeever has been seeding little hints that something not right has been going on for a long time within the colony and there is more evidence of it here.

Pearl #11 sets us up for the end as Pearl returns to San Francisco to take care of the Endo Twins. Also, a game changer of a cliffhanger. Love the double page spreads from Michael Gaydos.

Promethee 13:13 #1 is a digital-original prequel to Christophe Bec’s Promethee series from Andy Diggle, Shawn Martinbrough, Dave Stewart, and Simon Bowland. You don’t need to have read the original to follow this, but I still highly recommend it. This is an interesting starting point, with even more of a conspiratorial/espionage feel than the sci-fi of the main series. It’s good and I’m very interested to see where this goes.

Ragnarok: The Breaking of Helheim #1 is a welcome return of Walter Simonson’s new take on Thor and Norse Mythology, pushing the story in new directions as Thor gains a vision of the end from his father and sets out for Hel. Simonson, Laura Martin, and John Workman work together as a seamless team here delivering a wonderful next chapter to the story. For those new to this series, there’s also a rather nice Q&A section that helps with some of the details.

Resonant #1 is an intriguing debut from David Andry, Alejandro Aragon, Jason Wordie, and Deron Bennett. This first issue sets up a different, very interesting post-apocalyptic world that we’re kind of uncertain of, but with the core of a single father trying to protect his children. The art from Aragon and Wordie is incredible.

Road of Bones #3 goes even harder into the brutal horror of three men trying to survive without any resources in a harsh landscape devoid of life. Rich Douek, Alex Cormack, and Justin Birch elevate the terror nicely this issue.

Rumble #14 unleashes the Last Knight of the Scourge Knights upon the world, bringing with him death through oblivion. John Arcudi, David Rubín, Dave Stewart, and Joe Sabino are definitely raising the stakes here, especially with Rathraq distracted by a personal conflict.

Sera and the Royal Stars #1 is a fantastic debut of this fantasy series from Jon Tsuei, Audrey Mok, Raul Angulo, and Jim Campbell. It draws on Persian history and folklore as Sera is called upon by Mitra to fulfill a quest to prevent the end of everyone.

Silver Surfer: Black #2 continues to build the mythology around Knull. I love this blend of the seed from Venom with what’s been going on in the cosmic side from Guardians of the Galaxy, Donny Cates is doing a great job of reinforcing an evolving shared universe feel. Also, the art from Tradd Moore and Dave Stewart is phenomenal.

Sonata #2 unveils some more mysteries about the planet, including some incredible monsters out to kill and eat everyone. The art from Brian Haberlin and Geirrod Van Dyke is very nice.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #1 is a fun debut from Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn, and Clayton Cowles that brings back a lot of the ridiculousness of the old Jimmy Olsen stories, seeing Jimmy in bizarre and humorous predicaments. There’s also an interesting exploration of Jimmy’s family’s history in Metropolis. And wonderful artwork from Lieber and Fairbairn.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Usagi Yojimbo #2 continues “Bunraku” as the investigation into the puppets continues. The supernatural aspect that Stan Sakai is bringing to this lead off arc for the new volume is engrossing and the colour from Tom Luth is growing on me.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Vampirella #1 is kind of a weird start (excepting the zero issue) to this new volume from Christopher Priest, Ergün Gündüz, and Willie Schubert. It’s framed as Vampirella seeking help from a psychiatrist following the trauma of the plane that she was on in the zero issue crashing, a disbelieving psychiatrist, and it’s certainly different.

X-Force #10 concludes “The Counterfeit King” and with it the series (at least for now). Ed Brisson, Dylan Burnett, Jesus Aburtov, and Cory Petit go out with a bang as X-Force have a final confrontation with Stryfe and his remaining forces. Also, wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.

Family Letter Buckskin Gulch 11.13.20-11.16.20
On this weekend’s adventure, the boys went back up to Utah in Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument. It’s a huge natural area. We found a new route up there so it only took us three hours to get up there on Friday night. We set up a base camp in front of the cave we explored last time we were up there. Friday night’s delectable homemade meals were burgers for the boys. Although there was some controversy over whether they were cooked upright, all the guys went to sleep on a full stomach. We ran an AA meeting under the stars in subfreezing temperatures and we all got something out of everyone’s shares that helped us in our own recovery.
Bright and early the next morning, we were greeted by the delightful smell of coffee, bacon, and chocolate chip pancakes to draw us out of our tents into the brisk morning air. After everyone was satisfied, we packed our water, sandwiches, a plethora of nutritious bars, and went ‘exploring into the Cottonwood Narrows. With high spirits, we all hiked deep into the slot canyon. Aside from the cold temperatures and cool winds, we found ourselves climbing the walls of the canyon to new heights of recovery. When we made it to the other side of the canyon, we stopped for a midday lunch and journal session. The topic this weekend was “What are the weaknesses in your recovery and how are you going to work on them to prevent a future relapse.” As we navigate our way back to the start of the canyon it started to warm up a bit and a mini snowball fight broke out. (Just a little something to keep the spirits high towards the end of the hike.) When we got back to camp, some of the more adventurous guys took it upon themselves to hike the hill next to us and sled down it with sleeping pads, which made good sleds. After the fun and games seemed to die down we then had ourselves a little fiesta with “Tacos, Tacos, Tacos!” for dinner. After we were all stuffed, we ran a meeting where one of the veteran guys shared his story. It all occurred to us that we could all relate to each other more than what we had previously thought. We all shared how we related to him and the different mindsets that we all seemed to share in one way or another. Then soon after, we all bundled up for another cold night under the stars in Utah.
The next morning seemed to be colder than the last as we all awoke to fried eggs, bacon, more pancakes, and as always strong coffee to get us going early in the morning. Then we all piled into one van and headed down the bumpy road to the Buckskin Gulch. We stood at the edge of another slot canyon ready to tackle the obstacles ahead of us. As we trekked down the hill to what seemed to be getting more narrow as we went, many jokes and deep conversations were being held in the depths of the red rocks that surrounded us. After the first slot opened up into a deep wide canyon filled with hills, grass, and cave paintings, we had a rare sighting of the “Utah Bears” (cows). They were running up one of the next slot canyons we were hiking into and seemed to be unfazed by the people hiking near them as they just hung out and went about their days eating grass and doing other things the Utah Bear has been known to do (inside joke). As we continued our hike, we saw traces of those bears deeper in the next canyon and wondered how they made it through those narrows. As the canyon opened back up, we found a nice spot to chill, eat lunch, and then discuss what we had journaled about the day before. There was a lot of good feedback and observations getting thrown around and it seemed that some of the guys had been philosophers in their past lives. We then turned back and retraced our steps through the canyon and back to the van. On our way back to camp in the deep wilderness we stopped in Kanab UT for some grub for the boys. We all felt bad for the people working there because of the large order we put in, but surprisingly our food came out hot, and not a single thing messed up. We then receded back into the cold night and because of our quick-minded, fast reacting, helluva good driver, we nearly missed a deer on the highway on our way back to camp. Although a few of the guys joked how nice the rack would look above our wood furnace back at hunter’s house, we were all thankful the deer made it across the highway safely. As we bundled up for one last night, we all dreaded the early morning wake up we knew was upon us.
We awoke to the funny homemade Garageband song one our talented guides had made a few nights before, which made the dark cold wake up call a little better. About halfway through our drive back we stopped at Glen Canyon for a community meeting where we discussed how we thought our weekend went. All in all, a phenomenal trip, minus the cold weather…….some said it builds character…

Probably shouldn’t have binge-watched the new season of Twin Peaks while still feverish from the flu last week (I had some crazy extended dreams!), but it did remind of how awesome and genuinely a good guy Agent Cooper is. And we could use some of that in our lives. This phenomenal show, that was a true extension of the original series, gives us a thumbs-up from Agent Cooper to start us with this week’s blog.
Hard to believe it has been a week since we held our Onyx Path Summit at MidWinter! Even though a bunch of us were in various phases of getting sick, it was a hugely positive and open gathering where we examined a bunch of topics designed to get us all on the same page as to where the company is financially, psychologically, and philosophically.
We took a whole lot of body-blows in 2017, from deaths of our long-time friends and partners, to social media buffeting, and worries about human rights in our industry and throughout the world. And while Onyx Path the company came through toughened and with a lot more projects accomplished than before the year started, it took it’s toll on all of your Onyx Path crew.
We talked about more productive use of our tools, better understanding of our Onyx co-workers, stress and how to deal with it when you see your coworkers showing signs, the changing role of developers, and how Onyx can better take care of our folks as they continue to push us further into the areas we have just started to touch on with our various venues. These were all big topics to be discussed. And projects, lots of talk about projects big and small!
Everything revolved around one concept, though: that we intend to keep going on as we have with Onyx Path, and to use the lessons learned to both better the company, and to be sure that the work we’re doing doesn’t grind us down. We have to remember that neither the work, nor the ability to do it in a way that provides satisfaction and joy, is something that is done by one person.
We have helpers when we do our jobs in order to get those jobs done right, sure, but also we have helpers so we don’t go bug-fuck crazy while doing it!
Which is sometimes hard to remember when we’re all tele-commuting, and working in our own spaces. But oh so very important.
You’ll see the results of our introspection and team-building as the year passes and even more projects are caught up to and released, and new ones are added to the schedule.

Something else that came up a few times at MidWinter was just where folks could get our projects. Like, even though we think we talk about it all the time, people are still wondering, or amazed that we have stuff available in more venues than the last time they checked.
So, here’s a quick sales venue overview:
Onyx Path creates games and fiction for the Scion, Trinity Continuum, Scarred Lands, Pugmire, Cavaliers of Mars, World of Darkness, Exalted, and Chronicles of Darkness game line settings. This year we are adding They Came From Beneath the Seas!, and Dystopia Rising: Evolution.

These games by us are available on DriveThruRPG.com in PDF and physical book PoD versions. Fiction for these worlds is also available under Onyx Path for Kindle on the Amazon store, and for Nook on the B&N store.
Traditionally Printed Books and Screens:
We create Kickstarter campaigns for projects when we want to use traditional printing; sometime swanky Deluxe versions, sometimes versions that we hope to get into game stores. You can follow me as a Kickstarter creator by going to one of our KS pages. After a KS is over, we have started using BackerKit to continue to allow folks to “pre-order” Kickstarter projects. You can get to those through BackerKit, or by going the KS project you are interested in and hitting the link in the upper right that we create that leads to the BackerKit site.
Once we have delivered those Kickstarter projects to the KS backers, we have started selling the Deluxes through Indie Press Revolution. You can order direct, or you can have your Friendly Local Game Store order for you. We just had a big sale at the end of the year, so keep an eye out for those Deluxes and Screens you’ve been looking for.
For projects we Kickstart in order to fund a traditional print run, they are made available through Studio2: you can order from them directly or have your Friendly Local Game Store contact them, or order through you store’s favorite Distributor. Studio2 works to get the games into stores. Right now, they are only doing that for Pugmire, but soon that will be joined by Scarred Lands, Scion 2nd Edition, and even Changeling: the Lost 2nd Edition.
Merchandise:
If you want related items that aren’t books, we have a RedBubble store that sells t-shirts and other clothing items, mugs, phone covers, etc. featuring the art, logos, and symbols from all our game lines.
Electronic Gaming Aids:
Right now, we have our Onyx Dice Rolling App available in both the Apple store and for Android. We also have one adventure for Scarred Lands, the Gauntlet of Spiragos, available at Fantasy Grounds to be used online.
We hope to expand this area very soon.

At last, one of the most legendary of Kindred will share his personal journal with you! V20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary goes on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225322/V20-Becketts-Jyhad-Diary
It’s ever been a loaded word among vampires. Jyhad is in force everywhere from lofty, perfumed Elysium to cloying, smoke-filled blood feasts. Jyhad’s the eternal game played by elders, Methuselahs, and worse — it’s the agenda of beings so utterly beyond humanity, one such as yourself could scarcely understand its movements.
Luckily for you, you’ve picked up a copy of my diary. With my help you may just take a step on the first rung of understanding. Information worth having is information you must earn through blood, and oh, how I’ve bled for what’s contained within these pages.
— Beckett
Beckett’s Jyhad Diary serves as the definitive book of setting and plot for Vampire: The Masquerade, containing 30 chapters spanning different geographical regions, encountering vampires of every clan, profiling obscure and profound segments of the mythology, and providing countless story hooks on every page.
Masterfully written by the likes of Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vaan, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is as fascinating to read as to use for your game Chronicles.
With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways Advance PDF charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com!
Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It digs deep into what it feels like to have bones re-knit after breaking, the range of senses available across all forms, and the sudden heady rush of the Gifts and Rites bestowed by spirits. It also provides a look at what life is like for lupus and metis werewolves, characters who have had experiences alien to any person. It shows the many ways that werewolves organize in packs, and how those packs are designed as groups of warriors, rather than aligned to the behavior of wolves.
Changing Ways contains:
• A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective.
• More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind.
• Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play.

The Huntsmen Chronicle Anthology is a perfect companion piece to Changeling: The Lost, 2nd Edition. These stories spin tales of the Lost, of those abducted and enslaved by fairies. Those who escaped, but whose captors will stop at nothing to find them. These fairies summon forth the Huntsmen, primordial hunters who understand nothing but pursuit and capture. The Huntsmen are unstoppable monsters, and the Lost can only look to each other for respite, rare comfort, and rarer trust.

          A Land Where Legends Walk
Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations.
Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living.
The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns
Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios.
Available in both 5th Edition and Pathfinder compatible versions! PDF and PoD formats available NOW!

Paris Japan Expo Press Conference with Ryosuke Yamada, Tsubasa Honda, and Fumihiko Sori
T/N: There were two separate interviews from two different French media that was released after the Press Conference. The two article discussed different questions and answers, but we tried to compile both interviews together so all the information can be put into one post with the same flow of information. There were some new information here that we didn’t get from the Anime Expo press conference. So here you go!
Present at the Japan Expo to talk about Fullmetal Alchemist, the director and the two main cast of the film answered some of our questions!
At the end of the year, more precisely in December 1st, fans of Fullmetal Alchemist will have the opportunity to rejoice because the live action film based on the phenomenal work of Hiromu Arakawa will be screened in Japanese cinemas. Edward, Alphonse, Winry, Roy Mustang and all the incredible characters that the author had imagined will come to life on the big screen. This film is directed by Fumihiko Sori (Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker), and stars Ryosuke Yamada and Tsubasa Honda who play Edward and Winry. Alphonse of course will be entirely interpreted in CGI. During the press conference, the French media had the chance to interview them about the movie.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a special manga, since there are several stories that can be adapted into a live action film. Was it obvious to follow the story of the manga rather than the first anime?
Yamada: There are many fans of the original story. This is why we were inspired to adapt the scenes from the original manga to film. Especially because this is also an opportunity to introduce the original manga to those who have not read it yet!
Were you aware that Fullmetal Alchemist had met with such great success in the world when you agreed to make the film?
Yamada: There was some film footage that we showed in Los Angeles and here in France, which we have not yet shown in Japan. But after seeing the reaction of French and American fans, we thought that this would definitely work in Japan too. We already knew that the manga was very well known all over the world, but it was only until we really came here and to Los Angeles that we really understood how popular it was.
Mr. Sori, how did you find yourself working on the project?
Sori: There are not many people in Japan who can play roles like Edward Elric, I immediately said that Yamada would be perfect for the role. There really was no complication about this. I discussed it with the author, Hiromu Arakawa, and we  both agreed on the cast.
What is the biggest challenge in making a live action film about a work that has already been adapted into manga, movies and animated series, even video games?
Sori: Actually, I thought that it was useless to do the same thing that was already done in the anime, so we tried to introduce a certain originality, not in the story, but in the visual aspect. And that was the most complicated thing to do.
Mr Yamada and Miss Honda, how do you feel when you have to interpret characters as well-known as Ed and Winry? Was there a pressure in doing it?
Yamada: Oh yes! But neither of us wanted the roles to be given to anyone else, so we accepted it right away!
Honda: Especially, since we were already huge fans of the manga as well. So when we received the offer, we immediately said yes!
What did you like the most about the manga then?
Yamada: For me, it's mostly the fact that in the manga, we see everyone fighting together to recover the body of Edward's little brother Alphonse, and we return to this subject every time. In other manga, we go directly to the end (of an arc complication), while in Fullmetal Alchemist, there is always, at some point, a trigger that will lead the story to another direction. For me, it's what I really like most about this manga.
Honda: As for me, it is the fact that history really holds the story, and all the characters, even the bad guys, have something good in them. I think that's really nice. And I really like each of the characters in this manga.
Mr Yamada, you seem to be doing a lot of running, jumping, and fighting throughout the course of the film. Your role is obviously very physical. How did you prepare yourself for that?
Yamada: Actually, I have enough confidence in my physical ability, because, with my band, I always sing and dance at the same time and perform other physical acts. So I'm used to doing anything that's physical. On the other hand, Edward is a very muscular person, so I had to do a lot of muscle training and pumped up my muscles to resemble him as close as possible.
You said you did all of your stunts yourself. Which was the most difficult one to perform?
Yamada: Actually, it's not really stunt work, but it's a scene where I have to fight Alphonse. In reality I wasn’t hitting anyone who is exactly two meters tall! So not only was it physically difficult but, in addition, I had to imagine the scene as well. It was an unforgettable experience!
Winry is a hyper and energetic character. How did you approach this character, Ms. Honda?
Honda: Well, actually, I am very cheerful and positive in real life, so it was not really complicated for me to build that role. And I think if Winry is not there, the story would have been really dark. So I did everything I could to bring a little optimism and light into the story!
As for Edward, he’s a character that is very funny and easily gets irritated, but at the same time he’s also suffering. How did you approach those two polar sides of the character, Mr Yamada?
Yamada: Well, I think a character who is hyper expressive, like Edward, is easier to portray than a character whose thoughts are unknown. So I did not have much trouble preparing for this part of the role.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a very complex work, with philosophical and almost metaphysical themes. What choices, or what sacrifices, did you have to make, Mr. Sori, when you had to make a two-hour film?
Sori: In the film, we put about a third of the original story. We had to take the essential elements of this first one-third of the manga and we tried to include them in the film little by little, scene by scene, the stories that are essential to the main plot. So it's true that it was quite difficult to do, but it was not a really troublesome element in making the film.
How do you tell a manga of more than 50 episodes in a single movie?
Sori: We can’t put everything into the movie. In the film, we put one-third of the main stories of the entire manga. This does not mean that there will be a "to be continued ..." ending, this film is a complete story (that ends with a conclusion). But if it turns out to be successful, we'd love to do more movies and tell the other two-thirds of the manga.
Are live action movies very popular in Japan?
Honda: Yes! Especially live action movies about manga that take place at school or tell stories of high school students.
Mr. Yamada, this is not your first live action movie. You have already starred in the adaptation of Assassination Classroom, another manga that involves special effects...
Yamada: You see the yellow character in Assassination Classroom? When we filmed the scenes with him, there was a mannequin covered with sensors moving around us. It was so much more easier to film than Fullmetal Alchemist!
What was more difficult in Fullmetal Alchemist? Handling the green screens?
Yamada: Problems with green screens weren’t as much as handling Alphonse! His armor is entirely made with special effects, which made everything very complicated.
Honda: We were only told that Alphonse’s face will be at a certain height with his face as a sign and tells us “He’s here!”. And he was 2.2 meters tall, so we always had to look at an empty air.
Sori: At first I was a little worried for both of you. You had to speak to an empty space throughout the whole film! One of the most difficult scenes was the fight between Edward and Alphonse. The scene demanded a lot of emotion and moreover Yamada had to fight against an invisible opponent.
The author of the manga, Hiromu Arakawa, was impressed by the quality of the rendering of Alphonse, saying: "the surface of the armor reflects the surrounding landscape. To think that the whole film would be made with this quality of special effects really impressed me ... "
Sori: It took more than a year to process Alphonse in CGI, a first of its kind in Japan. It is the longest production period of special effects rendering for a Japanese film.
Did Hiromu Arakawa participate in the development of the script, or help you in any way to make the film?
Sori: No, Hiromu Arakawa was not involved at all in the making of the film. But on the other hand, she saw the film and was very happy about the outcome!
You were greeted by the screams of fans in France. For you, what explains the success of Fullmetal Alchemist?
Honda: The core of the story touches us all. The manga speaks about family, the fraternal bond between the two heroes, the abandonment of their father, and the death of their mother...
Yamada: It speaks about human beings, with so much philosophy behind it. For me, this is what makes Fullmetal Alchemist so unique.
In a manga, the reactions of the characters are often exaggerated, sometimes almost inhuman. How do you render reactions of the characters in the manga to the screen?
Yamada: We can’t recreate all the reactions from a manga character in a live action film. But I always have the manga in my pocket to inspire me for acting as Edward. One example that I try to include, in the manga Edward runs in a very unique way. A normal person doesn’t run like that. But I trained for hours to imitate that comical run of his. I think I succeeded!
You shot a part of the film in Italy. Can you tell me a bit more about how your experience was filming there?
Yamada: When I arrived in Italy, I was really surprised by the fact that the landscapes of the country really look like those from the manga! And when I arrived in Paris, I felt exactly the same thing the first time I came here. So if we have to make another film, I think that Paris could perfectly serve as our filming location.
Is there a moment during the shooting that really impressed you?
Honda: In Italy, there was no culture of having a Bento [lunch]. While in Japan, normally, when you have a shooting, there’s always bentos that are prepared for the actors. So, I was really surprised when I arrived on set in Italy and I saw that there was none!
And finally, who is your favorite character in Fullmetal Alchemist?
Yamada: For me, it's Winry!
Honda: As for me, it's Edward!
Sori: And I love when Winry and Edward are together (laughs)

It’s got it all! This film literally has a character break the 4th wall (with a boat)! The Truman Show has not only been nominated for countless awards in its time but it has won countless more. We take a look at what makes this Jim Carrey outing so enduring after all these years and why it is so difficult to corner into any one genre of film.
This film can be defined as Science Fiction, Comedy, Satire, Concept or Drama, but more accurately the film is a blend of all of these genre elements. Everyone and their dog agrees the film is a giant metaphor but no-one can seem to agree on what that metaphor is. Lets get the more obvious symbolism and observations out of the way first : There’s the Christof (of Christ) / Truman (true man) dynamic between what is essentially creator and creation. The themes of Moses and the book of Exodus. But the most prevalent themes come from Plato’s ‘Allegory of the cave’, an interplay where :
“Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners’ reality. Socrates explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not reality at all, for he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the manufactured reality that is the shadows seen by the prisoners. The inmates of this place do not even desire to leave their prison, for they know no better life. The prisoners manage to break their bonds one day, and discover that their reality was not what they thought it was. They discovered the sun, which Plato uses as an analogy for the fire that man cannot see behind. Like the fire that cast light on the walls of the cave, the human condition is forever bound to the impressions that are received through the senses. Even if these interpretations (or, in Kantian terminology, intuitions) are an absurd misrepresentation of reality, we cannot somehow break free from the bonds of our human condition—we cannot free ourselves from phenomenal state just as the prisoners could not free themselves from their chains. If, however, we were to miraculously escape our bondage, we would find a world that we could not understand—the sun is incomprehensible for someone who has never seen it. In other words, we would encounter another “realm”, a place incomprehensible because, theoretically, it is the source of a higher reality than the one we have always known; it is the realm of pure Form, pure fact.” – ‘Allegory of the cave’, Wikipedia
This idea was also promoted heavily in the Matrix. After all this is a story about control.
“We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented”
Moving on – Flat Earthers point to the symbolism of a presented idea, a giant dome which is not as it seems…. I’m not going to get too bogged down in that one given that the Flat Earth movement was started on 4Chan….
But speaking of paranoia – while researching the film I came across a few articles commenting on how the film echoes our current online privacy and data concerns (outlined in a previous post). However I feel that line of thinking is ill conceived : We elect to share our information, doing so without comprehension whereas Truman literally had no choice. He was born into his world was denied privacy from the start. Presumably those articles were attempting to draw comparison to Jim Carrey dumping his Facebook stock and calling out data mining? Who knows.
Soundtrack-wise the themes are emotive and engaging. Burkhard Dallwitz and Philip Glass capture the mood with each scene and build from introspective piano melodies to crashing epic tension with ease. Check out ‘It’s a life‘ , ‘Dreaming of Fiji‘ , ‘Reunion‘ and ‘Truman sleeps‘ specifically. The strings are vibrant and never overstep the mark, driving the scene in some areas and guiding it gently in others.
Jim Carrey filmed this at the height of his career but up until then was only really known for his comedic roles. Despite filming taking place earlier and delays with the studio over the films release, Carrey already had a number of successful box office films (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) The Mask (1994) Dumb and Dumber (1994) Batman Forever (1995) Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) The Cable Guy (1996) Liar Liar (1997)) under his belt. Some more successful than others obviously but this marks his first real acting job as far as I’m concerned. He has range here that we had previously never seen before. It demonstrates his first performance outside of the goofball character.
It’s worth noting that a similar project came out after The Truman Show – EDTV was another concept film which saw Matthew McConaughey (also starring Ellen, Woody from Cheers and Chandlers fruit-dehydrating roomate) elect to become a reality television star (with hilarious consequences ugh). A bit of a flop, EDTV’s saving grace was it’s ability to portray the “everyman”. They showed the effects of having the cameras intrude on the life of an aware Joe Bloggs character. The protagonist being a bit of a slob (and not too bright) made it easy for the writers to put him into that situation and act boisterous in an effort to escape. With Truman there was a child-like naivety that made him the hero of the film. His schtick was an innocence that made the audience root for him.
The deleted scenes allude to deeper plot threads and character traits. There is a scene where it could be theorised that the network were drugging Truman with “vitamins”. A scene outlining a studio plot for Truman to have an affair, a son and his inevitable death (prematurely or otherwise). In this scene they discuss Truman’s son and the continuation of the show which is an interesting concept in itself. In another scene we see that when Truman steps onto the boat – he knows completely that everyone in Seahaven is in on the conspiracy. He appears disguised as a member of his own search party and makes his way to the docks. Once he knows the truth there is no turning back for his character. Obviously this scenes omission from the theatrical cut makes for a more compelling story if Truman still has doubts as to the level and intricacies of the conspiracy by this stage.
I truly feel like Andrew Niccol doesn’t get enough credit for the world-building at play. Every character not only has a backstory within Truman’s world, but so does the actors that play them (within the confines of the world outside Seahaven). I admire this level of detail (seen more recently in the gaming world with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 – where the NPC’s have lives and jobs and a scheduled day independent of the protagonists actions). We can also see the sophistication of the camera technology grow as Truman gets older in the more “clip driven” portions of the film.
The filming is in itself fascinating. At the beginning of the film shots of Truman appear largely in fish eye, iris and point-of-view to demonstrate the perspective of the hidden cameras. As Truman discovers his world these devices are used less, subtly taking the audience out of this world alongside Truman (to a certain extent). The shift is subtle but wholly impactful. Even camera angles throughout the film make it look like filming is being conducted from hidden locations within the scenery.
As solid as the world-building of the film is, there are still some concerns about the ending : what happened when Truman went through the door? Did it lead into a backstage area or some sort of maintenance corridor? Echoing back to the religious symbolism, Christof addresses Truman from the heavens with a booming voice and Truman turns his back on the creator. As symbolic as his exit is in the film, Truman is still within Christof’s control (at least until he makes it outside of the secure studio/dome facility). And then there’s the legal ramifications of his departure. The studio presumably have a legal obligation to his care and well-being. We assume that Sylvia comes to meet Truman leaving the studio but we have no idea how difficult it would be for him to leave the compound property.
Christof and the network can’t have been too happy about Truman’s departure – Would they seek to smear him using footage of grabbing his wife Meryl with the blade? What are the copyright and consent limitations? Then there’s the serious mental toll of living a lie : breakdowns and trust issues, lack of anonymity. We only see glimpses of the world outside of Seahaven and even then it is only of the audience themselves. What kind of world could Truman potentially be walking into?
Calm down, Stu. It’s only a film?
The Truman Show is heartfelt and sincere. It is all of these genre specific elements, religious analogies and psychoanalytical commentaries rolled neatly into the DNA of what is a solid concept film (which ironically would work well as a television series). It asks fascinating questions about identity and privacy. For that reason I feel it will be remembered fondly for years to come. A time capsule if you will. A snapshot of a time before mass surveillance and reality television.
“In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight”

When Truman leaves : ‘The Truman Show’ (1998) It's got it all! This film literally has a character break the 4th wall (with a boat)!
