Note
you should assign 3 songs to 5 characters of your choosing and explain why you chose them
Kon, pls know I love you and I’m answering this before I do my physics homework. (the links are for spotify!!)
5 songs for 3 characters (bc god help me i can’t vibe with five characters rn, my brain is broken.):
Hal Jordan:
1. Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths
i have angsted about Hal with this song for LITERAL MONTHS OKAY. Hal is Achilles, the negative voice is basically Hal’s depression and Barry is the positive voice for obvious reasons. you can thank me later.
2. Fake Fine by Robert Grace
Twenty-seven, life is Armageddon I've got clinical depression 'cause my mind's an imperfectionist
But I forget just what the question is 'Cause I'm a fuck-up Stuck here with my hands cuffed Behind my back, tryin' to keep myself intact
hi yes all of these things are confirmed in Hal’s life and you cannot TELL ME that Hal doesn’t put up a front because he Does.
3. Morning In America by Jon Bellion
i mean really this just invoked Hal for me, the song is talking about everything that’s actually going on behind the scenes, and that’s just how i see Hal? All the important stuff is behind the scenes and Hal’s been trying to live up to Martin’s memory his whole life. is that how other people see it? i dunno.
4. Pretender - Acoustic by AJR
i think im just chanting the same thing over and over because like, really all of these picks are just me chanting the same thing in different words, but... yeah.
5. Danny Phantom by Spencer Jordan
look, he’s.... he’s Danny Phantom, okay? think about it. because i can’t stop thinking about it, so now you have to.
Stephanie Brown:
1. Twinkle Lights by The Sonder Bombs
And at 14 years old I was basically fully grown I was 14 years old but still the saddest kid I’ll ever fuckin' know
(that’s it, that’s the tweet.)
2. long story short by Taylor Swift
I tried to pick my battles 'til the battle picked me Misery Like the war of words I shouted in my sleep And you passed right by I was in the alley, surrounded on all sides The knife cuts both ways If the shoe fits, walk in it 'til your high heels break
it literally just feels like Steph telling the story of her life.
3. Since I Was A Kid by Lennon Stella
it *screams* Steph’s origin story and explains like why she is the way that she is.
4. ocean eyes by Billie Eilish
*cough* TimSteph *cough*
5. Outskirts Of Paradise by Bad Suns
I'm on the outskirts of paradise Chasing desire through the night Picturing ways to take flight When the time comes
Steph and being a Robin/Batgirl/the Spoiler. :)
Jason Todd:
1. Don’t Throw Out My Legos by AJR
this is both like, Jason wanting to grow up and not be viewed as the kid he was when he died, while still wanting a place in the family, secretly.
2. The Way We Get By by Spoon
it feels like it could be a take on Crime Alley, but that of someone from there, so to Jason it goes. (i’m trying to give different vibes here.)
3. Burn This City by Cartel
Cause our days were numbered by nights on too many rooftops. They said we're wasting our lives, Oh at least we know, that if we die - we lived with passion. They said we'd burn so bright. We burn this city and go.
it’s the batkid anthem.
4. Spirits by The Strumbellas
I've been lookin' at the stars tonight And I think, oh, how I miss that bright sun I'll be a dreamer 'til the day I die And they say, oh, how the good die young?
Jason and his life as a (technically) deceased boy.
5. Sick Boy by The Chainsmokers
really, it just feels like a cynical take Jason would have?
Honorable Mention Songs:
1. invisible string by Taylor Swift
it’s a barry and iris love song, okay. they’re the gold standard.
2. Old Friends by Ben Rector
ITS HAL AND BARRY AS CHILDHOOD FRIENDS OKAY YES I JUST CAME UP WITH THIS ONE AT THE LAST MINUTE BUT REALLY.
3. No Peace In Quiet by Delta Rae
this could be literally any superhero with *anyone* that’s died in any comic continuity, but Hal or Iris after Barry dies really fits, because these are the people that I am currently obsessed with and you can’t tell me that Hal didn’t love his best friend and get absolutely wrecked by his death. (but yeah, uhhh speedster love interests after their speedster gets sucked into the speed force—this one’s for you.

-- about my writing --
Tumblr media
I’m currently taking requests / asks for headcanons [ can be either NSFW or just in general or a specific idea ] or fluff/filth Alphabet letters. These are the only requests I plan on taking. If you send me prompts / one shot ideas.. I won’t do them, sorry.
To see what the questions are for the fluff / filth alphabet, see [this post]
[ To my thots anon whomst I love with every cell in my body... Your thots are all going to fall under NSFW headcanons so please.. By all means.. Feel free to send me all the thots you want because I really really really really really enjoy writing them!!! Also, you can find the thots you’ve sent me on my nsfw masterlist, they’re not going anywhere. They were so good I had to add them to a masterlist somehow, I couldn’t resist. At everyone else out there, the same applies to you guys.]
Tumblr media
So.. Here’s the thing.. I’ve decided that I’m going to be taking 3 kinds of requests. Those are as follows: Headcanons { filthy, fluffy or themed specifically at your choosing }, fluffy alphabet and filthy alphabet letters. These are the only kinds of request I answer so don’t send me prompts / one shot requests or ideas unless I specifically say otherwise.
Bearing the above in mind, I have some guidelines.
I’m only accepting headcanons (nsfw / fluff / specific theme &/or reader), fluffy or filthy alphabet letters. If you send me one shot ideas or prompts, I’m going to delete them because I don’t do one-shots.
One character per ask. I don’t care how many asks you send. But I ask that you only send one character per ask because that makes things a lot more simple for me.
You can send up to 4 letters in each ask if you’re asking for either version of the alphabet. Be sure to let me know whether you want filth or fluff or a mix of both. IE, you could send me something like this; character name - a, b {filth} & j v {fluff}. I’m not saying your ask has to look exactly like this but it does need to clearly state which version you’re asking for. The format I just did above was just the easiest way that came to mind for me.
The more precise you are with the headcanon requests you send, the better I can tailor them to you. If you just want an overall NSFW headcanon or overall fluff, that’s totally fine. But if you want a specific scenario ( friends to lovers, date night, weddings, the sky is the limit here) you need to tell me that. The same goes for if you want a specific reader (POC, plus size, sick, shy, virgin, imprint, etc) then I need to know that. It’s like I said.. The more specifics you give me, that’s more I have to work from.
As far as headcanons go, the things I won’t write are rape, incest / huge age gaps between reader / character. I’ll only write abuse if someone is getting their just desserts at the hands of character on readers behalf. Any asks containing rape / incest / huge age gaps are going to be deleted.
All asks must come to my inbox. I don’t take requests through DM or in comments on a post. If it helps, my anon is on, so you can request to your hearts content.
If the ask box is closed, this means I’m currently not taking headcanon or fluff/filth alphabet requests. This will also be noted on my blog bio and possibly a post stating why/for how long. Anything sent in after the ask box is closed will either be gotten to the next go around or it’ll be deleted, depending on the situation.
Tumblr media
First of all... My content is meant strictly for adults. I do write some things that people underage can safely  read, but that is not always the case. I realize that I can’t stop minors from reading my work, but I can tell you outright that I’d rather you skip over it if you’re underage and it clearly states that it’s not written for anyone underage. Again.. I can’t do anything to stop minors from reading my NSFW content beyond just choosing never to post writing on the internet. And I don’t plan on stopping, so.. yeah.
I put warnings on everything. Reading those will definitely save you time and upset. If you keep reading something I’ve written and it upsets you in any way, I’m sorry but I can’t help. I warned you. You chose to take the risk -and most likely, you chose to skip the warning I gave before the post even started... It’s strictly on you now. It’s out of my hands. Any complaints or things of that nature are gonna be laughed at and deleted out of my inbox because I’m not here to argue or censor myself. I’m not your parents, just a peer. If you as a minor choose to look at me, an adult adjacent person, as an authority figure of any sort... First of all, why? Ya’ll.. no.. please don’t. I’m a hot mess, okay? To look at me like any trust worthy authority figure is... A huge error on your own part. Secondly, please don’t. I’m here to enjoy my favorite fandoms / post content for them. I’m not here to please people / censor myself and my content to make everyone else happy... Let me repeat. I put warnings on everything I post. If you keep reading and you read something you’re not supposed to this is now solely your own problem. Sorry, I guess?
I’ve seen other adults saying that they block minors on here. While I’m not gonna do that.. I will not tag minors in my NSFW content knowingly. If I find out you’re a minor and I’m posting something NSFW for a fandom you’ve asked to be tagged in, I will not be tagging you. Sorry. As much as I say I’m not here to parent you and I’m just your peer and you need to think of me like that instead, I’m also not willing to risk anything, either. I’m truly sorry in advance.
While I’m talking about tagging people / my taglist...If you want me to tag you in my writing, you need to be on my taglist. The taglist can be found [ here ] or you can dm / send an ask telling me you want to be added and I will be more than happy to do so. Don’t be afraid to ask me. I don’t mind at all!
Every now and then, I’ll tag my friends in things I write. If I tag you in something and you don’t want me to, let me know. I won’t do it anymore. I’m not here to overwhelm or annoy anyone and I don’t want to come off as pushy, either. SO.. if you’re getting tagged or whatever and you want me to stop tagging you, all you have to do is let me know.
If you’re not on my tag list (or I don’t know you well enough to know whether you’d potentially want to read something) I will not be tagging you. If you’re a minor and I know for sure/think  you are and it’s smut, I will definitely not be tagging you.
Content I’m not willing to write or  you probably won’t find here: Incest and Rape. Those are my hard no’s. Just the thought of writing something like that makes me feel gross. I’m also not going to be writing huge age gaps in romantic stories either. (the closest I’ll come is like.. 18/19 and up to 24...) I mean absolutely no offense against people who can and do write things like this, I just can’t?

I’m gonna be honest here. I post on my own time, at my own pace. Some days I post constantly, sometimes it’s days or even weeks, and occasionally, a month before I post anything. So.. Now ya know.
If I’m not on and posting, odds are I’m busy, taking a break or whatever. But I’ll come back! I always do.
Basically, what I’m saying here is I have no set posting schedule. At all. I post what I want when I’m in the mood to do so. Just something to keep in mind when you’re asking for headcanons / nsfw alphabet letters with characters.

chapter eight | crab society north
Billy was a bigger guy, one who dwarfed not only both Frank and Scott, but Dan and Charlie as well. The kid had shaved his head and put on a raggedy aged shirt that looked as though it was about to fall right off of his heavy body. And yet, the very second he met eyes with Sam as she stepped out of Frank's car once again, his face lit up and he showed her a little grin; he wore that shirt as if the frigid winds from Lake Ontario did not exist and it was just a regular day.
“Don't see a lot of you 'round a bunch of guys like us,” he remarked in a striking, deep voice.
“Why's that?” she asked him; she held down her dark hair against the cold upstate winds and she shivered a little bit under her coat.
“Not too sure,” he confessed with a squinting of his eyes, “well, and we don't really imagine a bunch of guys like us havin' groupies, either. But anyways—c'mon in. We're all friends here.”
The studio was small and cramped, about the size of someone's living room plus a tiny kitchen that looked to be out of a school cafeteria. A drum kit had been crammed into the far corner of the kitchen; right next to that stood a little amp about the size of a coffee can. Sam and Frank stood on the edge of the room as Charlie, Scott, Dan, and Billy congregated in the kitchen; she shut the door behind them and she caught the sound of a soft click on the inside of the wood.
“If this goes anywhere, we should let Sam I am over here have one of the first copies,” Scott suggested with a flick back of his thick dark hair.
“First copies of a record of a brand new band,” Frank remarked, and he showed her a smile and a twinkle in his dark eyes. “That's like a friendship bracelet of sorts.”
“Or a safe keep of sorts,” she added as she adjusted the strap of her purse. She held her journal underneath her other arm: she still thought about that photograph Frank and Charlie had lent her. She considered drawing it while sitting there on the far edge of the room next to Frank: indeed, there were three small brick red chairs pressed up against the wall. Billy said something from the other room and Charlie scurried into there to tend to something.
“Where's my bass,” Dan muttered.
“It's back here, Danny,” Charlie called out.
“Amazing they can fit a bunch of stuff in here,” Sam commented in a low voice.
“There's a couple of closets back there,” Frank told her with a gesture to the right side of the room. “We've got some instruments stashed in there just in the event of recording. They're kind of crappy, though.”
“Crappy li'l instruments and some cheesy little amps?” she chuckled.
“Exactly! Our label is kind of strapped for cash and other things after all.”
“Do you guys get any other bands through here?”
“Do we ever! You know that one band you kept seeing a couple of times back in Manhattan, Legacy?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“They're an example of one of them who come through here. There's a bunch down in New York City, like Danny's band plus Overkill—and I guess there's a shitload of them over in California, too. Legacy is just one of them.”
She followed his gaze to the wall on the left. There was a little flyer right in the middle of the wall with a line of spiky text reading “METALLICA” in all capital letters. Something about that name caught her attention in particular.
“You lookin' at Metallica?” Frank asked her.
“Yeah.”
“They're badass. All I know about them is they started out with a tape goin' around New York City, called No Life 'Til Leather. I'll have to share it with you at some point—it's pretty rough around the edges but it's powerful, though. They've already got two records out now.”
“Wow, really?” Sam raised her eyebrows at him.
“Yeah, Kill 'Em All and they put out Ride the Lightning just this past summer. They've gone on tour already and everything.”
“Wow!”
“Yeah, they're gonna go places. They're gonna take over the world at some point.”
“And you guys are gonna be right there with them?”
“That's our hope. That's Jon's hope, too. We've started building friendships with them.”
“I hope Aurora and I can get to meet them.”
“They live over in San Francisco so we'd have to—make a few phone calls to those guys. James, Kirk, Lars, and Cliff. There was another guy with them—Dave, Dave... Mustaine, I think is his last name? Scott and Charlie both know more about him than I do. All I know is he got fired.”
“For what?”
“Drinking.”
“Must've been a lot,” she quipped.
“Eh, again, you'll have to ask the two of them about it.” The sound of distortion caught their ears, and thus Frank gestured to the chairs over on the other side of the room.
“Have a seat,” he said to her in kind fashion.
Sam took the one on the left, right underneath the Metallica flyer. He took the one right next to her which left the one on the far right vacant. They were given a view into the kitchen, where Scott and Dan had slung their guitars over their shoulders, and Charlie had disappeared into the far corner of the room to tend to the drums. There was a bit of clicking behind the left side of the doorway.
“You gonna set that thing up to record ourselves on?” Scott asked, flabbergasted.
“Yeah, it's all I can find in here,” Billy said, nonplussed. There was a blowing sound, followed by a soft muttering noise.
And then Sam realized he had found a microphone in there for himself. All she could see from him was his elbow and his right leg below the knee, but she could in fact hear him.
“I am the law! I am the law!” His voice was hoarse but strong at the same time. Nothing like Joey's operatic power, but more like a fierce snarl combined with a violent growl. There was something about his voice that entranced her: it was something different and the complete opposite of the clean lovely vocals that came out from Joey's mouth.
Their songs were strangely short, like only a few seconds: the longest one was about a minute, and they all seemed to bleed into each other.
She shuffled her feet underneath her chair.
“So noisy,” she joked to Frank.
“This is the life we chose!” he proclaimed with glee. Scott tried to say something over his own riffing; Sam could hardly hear his own words, except for a few little snippets of his sentiments.
“By the way—Dan—let me say one thing—this doesn't leave the room—not to talk about Anthrax but...”
“But what?” Dan called out to him once he rested his fingers across the fret board of his bass. Scott held onto the pick with his thumb and his index finger and strummed it all over the strings.
“That!” he declared, which coaxed a laugh out of both Billy and Charlie. Frank looked over at her with a twinkle in his eye and one hand inside of his jacket.
“Want a piece of gum?” he offered her.
“Oh, yes please!”
He took out a small pack of gum that made her think of a pack of cigarettes with its red and white lid; he popped it open and gave her a little piece. Even against the musty smell of the room, she could feel the burn of the spearmint on her nose.
“Holy—” she sputtered and coughed a couple of times.
“Yeah, it's strong,” he said, unfazed; he slipped in a piece and she was met with that fresh aroma of spearmint from him.
“Jesus—” Her eyes even began to water a bit.
“I have a little bit of a problem with halitosis,” he confessed. “I've had it for a long time.”
“Why's that?”
He shook his head. “No idea. Charlie thinks it's from genetics, but who knows, really.”
Meanwhile, every song Storm troopers of Death whipped out into the open went onto something that Billy had set up on the counter top in there. Every so often, he leaned over to adjust the thing.
“So there's Crab Society,” Dan remarked at one point as he held one finger across the second fret of his bass. Charlie twirled the drum stick in his right hand and almost let it fall onto the cymbal next to the wall; he caught it by the skin of his pinky and ring fingers and then gripped onto the bass.
“We've got time, though, Danny,” Scott assured him.
“Time for what?”
“Time to name this—thing.”
“What are they even recording on?” Sam asked Frank; he leaned over to look into the room.
“I don't really know,” he confessed in a low voice.
“We kind of are the Crab Society now,” Dan declared with a clearing of his throat: he tapped on the largest string of the bass with his first two fingers.
“Yeah, but we can't really use that name, though,” Charlie pointed out.
“True. We're—Crab Society—North? Given we're upstate and all.”
“North, south, east, and west,” Scott chuckled.
“Which of us is north, south, east, and west, though?” Charlie asked as he attempted another twirl of the drum stick.
“I'll be east,” Scott volunteered, “Danny'll be west.”
“Guess I'll be south, then,” Billy said with a sniffle and a clearing of his throat.
“Why do you get to be south?” Charlie scoffed.
“'Cause you're from the Bronx, Char,” Billy pointed out.
“So I'm north, then!”
“Exactly!”
Sam looked over at Frank and couldn't help but laugh at what she was hearing several feet away from them.
“Welcome to our world, Sam I Am,” he said with a chuckle and a lopsided smile.
“Just a bunch of guys willing to kick back for a little bit while the real thing gets taken care of,” Scott called out with a raise of those thick dark eyebrows.
There was low thump outside the door.
“There he is,” Frank quipped; he climbed to his feet. Whoever tried to come into the building jiggled the doorknob.
“Guys?” Joey's voice rang through the wood of the door.
“Hang on, Joey,” Frank called out; there was another click in the next room there. He tugged on the doorknob but the door itself wouldn't budge.
“Want some help?” Sam offered.
“Please.”
She stood to her feet and set her journal down on the chair in order to assist him: Frank lifted the doorknob itself while Sam clasped her hands onto the backs of his and gave the knob a good yank. The door flung open and Joey stumbled into the room right then: they were met with bright sunlight but a chilly gust of wind as well. His chest was right in her line of sight, but she pressed herself against the wall behind her to let him in there. He took off his mirrored sunglasses to better look at her with those big brown eyes. Stray strands of his jet black curls sprawled down his brow so she could better look into his eyes. Frank shut the door behind him and the wind settled in the room.
“Oh, hi,” he breathed out at the sight of her.
“Hi,” she returned the favor, and she held the journal up to her chest even though they were a foot apart. “How you feelin'?”
“Better—kinda.”
“Kinda?”
“Yeah, it's—it's gonna be a bit before my body gets back up to right temperature. But I ain't miserable anymore, though.”
“That's good.”
“I had cannoli courtesy of my mom and my grandma,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders and a smirk on his face.
“Sounds good,” she replied as she ran her hands atop the crown of her head.
“Speaking of goodness, you smell good,” he remarked with a look at her chest.
“Thank me for that!” Frank proclaimed.
“Joey!” Scott declared; he strode out of the room without the guitar over his shoulder. “How'd you know we were here?”
“My dad and I were driving past here and I was like, 'hey, there's Frankie's car,'” Joey replied as he tossed a pocket of his black curls over his shoulder.
“Were you with your dad?” Sam asked him.
“Nah, I was driving behind him. When I pulled over, he pulled over with me and I told him what was going on. I'm a big boy—I can do stuff.” He turned his head for a look over at Scott and Charlie.
“So what'd I miss?” he asked them.
“Kinda doin' our own thing for the remainder of studio time,” Scott replied. “We're callin' it Stormtroopers of Death.”
“Sounds badass and nerdy at the same time. I like it.”
“They were just putting together a demo tape,” Frank told him. “A li'l demo and then maybe something else after that if Jonny gives 'em the green light.”
“And I guess I'm going to get my paws on a first copy of it,” Sam followed up with a tone of excitement.
“Well!” Joey folded his arms across the chest. “Consider it an honor, li'l one.”
“I already do! I hope they go places with the whole thing, too.”
“We're all hard workin' boys,” Charlie declared.
“All workin' hard and then some more,” she added.
“Speaking of more,” he said with a raise of a finger. Charlie doubled back into the kitchen there for something. Billy, who was partially behind the wall, looked over his shoulder at him all the while. Charlie rummaged through the fridge in there, and then he came back with a pair of brown glass bottles of beer, one in each hand.
“Care for a drink?” he offered her, and she hesitated for a second. She was under the drinking age, but it was an offer from him and with a soft look on his round face all the while.
“Thank you,” she said with a little smile and a taking of the bottle in his right hand for herself. The glass was cold and the edges of the cap were sharp against her hand.
“Want a little bit of help?” Frank offered her.
“All I can get.”
“Here—” Charlie handed him his bottle for a second so he could pry off the cap with two fingers. That strong aroma of hops flooded out of there, and made her eyes water more than the spearmint in her piece of gum.
“You want a beer, Joey?” Scott offered.
“You know I do,” Joey chuckled, “I was wantin' Irish coffee this morning when the three of them came to get me, so you know it.”
Sam took out her piece of gum and held it between two fingers. She tipped the bottle back for a sip: the contrast of the spearmint and the hops clashed and she grimaced at the taste.
“That gum, right?” Frank laughed.
“Yeah—” Her stomach turned a bit but she persisted. Indeed, the contrast went away within mere seconds and she was able to take another sip from the mouth.
“Let's go outside for a bit,” Billy suggested.
“Yeah, it's sunny out,” Joey said as he pried off the cap from his bottle. “Kinda windy but at least the clouds've cleared out a li'l bit...” He took a hearty swig from the bottle and followed Billy and Scott out the kitchen. Meanwhile, Frank turned to Sam, who was trying to keep it down but the taste of the beer was so strong and in her face that it was hard to even bring the mouth of the bottle to her lips. He eyed the gum in her fingers.
“You wanna know a little trick?”
“For what?”
“The piece of gum. Kinda roll your fingers a bit so it turns into a little ball. It's a little hard because it's all sticky—” She tried it out regardless, and it stuck to her skin at first. “—keep going, keep going, keep going... there you go. Now put it behind your ear like Violet Beauregarde.”
“Don't forget it's there, either,” Charlie advised her as he took a swig from his bottle. “One of my sisters did that once and my mom had to cut it out with scissors.”
She tossed her hair over her head, and then she stuck the little wad of gum behind her right ear for safe keeping. It stuck to her skin and she knew she could go back to it within time.
“So we wanna go outside?” Frank asked them.
“If you wanna,” Charlie told him, “I'm actually kinda cold right now.”
“Cold, even after pounding away on those drums,” she remarked as she tilted her head to the left to keep her hair off the side of her head.
“I'm pretty sure Charlie was born with drum sticks in hand and without pores in his skin,” Frank joked, which brought an eye roll out of Charlie.
“So d'you draw something?” he asked Sam.
“I haven't been able to,” she confessed as she held the bottle closer to her chest. “I've just been so—enthralled by what was going on in here. You're a natural!”
“Me? Well, I dunno 'bout that...”
“I also don't know what I did with that picture of you guys, either.”
“I think it's out in the car,” Frank recalled, “I'll be right back.” He doubled back to the front door, which had been jammed stuck again. “Help me out here, Charlie.”
Charlie himself met up with him to lift up the door.
“Yet another thing this place needs,” he muttered as he held onto the knob with his free hand, “among other things. It's one thing when Billy gets it open, though.” The door swung open and Frank stepped outside.
Sam meanwhile, caught the sight of something out of the corner of her eye. She stood in the kitchen doorway to find a small cramped space, crammed full with Charlie's drum kit, those dusty guitars and bass, and that microphone the size of her hand, the latter of which Billy had placed on the counter top right next to a walkman. That was what they recorded the demo on. She turned her attention to the door on the other side of the room, which hung open even with the cool upstate winds. She made her way over to it to see the back of Joey's head: he had taken a seat on the back step there.
His hair was lush, and looked even more so there in the hazy afternoon sun. Sam could make out the sight of little glints of gold embedded in the curls at the back of his head. Combined with the darkness of his roots, his hair was thick and swirled like a psychedelic drawing. She imagined it being like a dense forest, a whole stretch of thick shrubs coupled with those tall slender dark trees in the dark earth. She tried to picture it soaking wet following a shower, all sweet smelling and delicate.
Joey gave his hair a toss over his shoulder, which only accentuated the coarsest of curls on his back. Sam thought of vines dangling down from tree branches.
He leaned over his slender thighs and rested his elbows on his narrow knees. She eyed his slim waist from behind there. He was almost delicate, especially since she got a better look at him there: he did not have his microphone in hand that time, and he was at an odd angle to boot.
She hung there in the doorway with her free hand on the edge of the threshold and she kept her eye on the gentle shape of his shoulder and his upper arm. The fingers of his left hand curled around his right elbow and he shivered from the incoming fog. Joey bowed his head a bit and she could make out the shape of the bottle in his hand.
“Sam?” Charlie called out. She returned to the main room to find him with the photograph in hand.
“Ah! Thank you!” She took the photograph for herself and crossed the floor to the chairs. She tucked the photograph into her journal and returned to them.
“Not really the best place for drawing, though, from what I can see,” Frank pointed out.
“Yeah, talk about uncomfortable,” Charlie nodded his head. “By the way, Frankie and I were just talking a little bit out there—if Stormtroopers of Death go anywhere, we oughtta give you something to do, seeing as you sat in with us on the recording process. The whole entire hour and whatnot.”
“Oh, wow, I wouldn't know the first thing of what to do,” she confessed as she took another sip of beer. A little better that time: the hoppy taste wasn't so pungent and in her face, but it still hit her tongue more than the spearmint.
“You could sit in with us on tour dates for Anthrax and Storm troopers.”
“How does one open for themselves?” she asked him.
“You've—got to be on top of it all?” Charlie raised an eyebrow at that. “One state of mind versus the other, I s'pose. Something we'd have to figure out. And it can be something to show your school counselors, too!”
Scott burst out laughing right then and Billy said something.
“Hey, Frankie!” Joey called out from the kitchen doorway.
“What's up?” Frank hurried in there to see what was the matter. Charlie returned to her.
“By the way, Joey was right—it is nice outside. Kinda chilly but not a cloud in the sky now. Wanna take a walk?”
“I'd love to take a walk,” she said, and without another word, the two of them filed out of there into the bright, crisp afternoon: the sun was beginning to hang low over the horizon before them. He walked at a slow pace so they could be side by side on the little dirt pathway along the side of the street. Lucky for her, the wind kept her hair on the side of her head, thus off of the piece of gum behind her ear. Charlie pushed a thick lock of his own hair off of his face in the meantime.
“Can I tell you something?” he asked her at one point.
“Um—sure? Is it important?”
“If you want it to be.”
“Okay.”
He then cleared his throat, but he never said anything after that. They reached a curve in the road, one lined with a series of tall trees that blocked out some of the more intense of the winds.
“Sam, we've only known each other for a little more than a week, but I feel like I've known you for years,” he confessed at a quick clip.
“It's funny, I—feel the same way about you, too.” She turned her head to look at him; the orange light from the late afternoon sun washed over the side of his face.
A gust of cold wind sent a chill down her spine, and he inched closer to her.
“I mean, think about it,” he started again. “We're both artists. Artists look out for each other and stick together. It only makes sense that we officially call ourselves friends for each other.”
Sam had no idea if it was the alcohol talking or the fact that she came to New York with a fresh new slate and it all started happening so fast, but her head began to spin a little bit from the feeling. She even had to stop in her tracks to gather herself.
“You alright?”
“I'm a little bit dizzy—this is all starting to feel like a dream.”
“I assure you it's the real thing.”
She lifted her gaze to his face, partially obscured in shadow courtesy of the sun: the light made it seem as though he had a halo around the crown of his head. She had a friend in Aurora and now, a friend in Charlie.
“Friends forever,” she said with a raise of her bottle.
“Friends forever,” he replied and he brought his bottle to his for a toast. The bottles made a clink noise and they took a drink in unison: she took another sip compared to his hearty swig. “I'm sure Frankie'd wanna join in on that, too. And I think it’s just the heat of the moment, but I really wanna watch you draw now.”

PGA Championship: Danny Willett and Jon Rahm lead as Rory McIlroy makes cut
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/pga-championship-danny-willett-and-jon-rahm-lead-as-rory-mcilroy-makes-cut/
PGA Championship: Danny Willett and Jon Rahm lead as Rory McIlroy makes cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willett’s round of seven under was only matched by Billy Horschel
BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth: (Second round) -11:D Willett (Eng) J Rahm (Spa);-9:J Rose (Eng), H Stenson (Swe), C Bezuidenhout (SA)-7:B Horschel (US), P Casey (Eng) Selected others: -5:R Ramsay (Sco), A Johnston (Eng), F Molinari (Ita);+1:T Fleetwood (Eng), R McIlroy (NI) Full leaderboard
Danny Willett shot a seven-under-par round to share the halfway lead in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The Englishman, 31, carded six birdies and an eagle to reach 11 under, the same mark as Spain’s Jon Rahm.
Justin Rose is tied for third on nine under, while Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy just made the cut, shooting three under to reach one over overall.
“I didn’t really do much the last couple of weeks and some things start to creep into your game,” said McIlroy.
The 30-year-old, who won the Fed-Ex Cup in August, added: “I’m happy to be here for the weekend. I had to battle hard out there just to be here. I’m proud of myself for hanging in.
“Plus one, obviously the leaders are way up there, but the conditions are going to be tricky.
“The course is getting firm. If I can shoot seven-under tomorrow, get myself to minus six, you never know… I went low on this golf course before, so I feel like I can do that.”
Willett continues fine form
Round two of the European Tour’s flagship event could not be fully completed because of bad light and five players will conclude their round from 0715 BST on Saturday.
Willett’s fine round was further evidence of his return to form having slipped to 462 in the rankings in 2018.
The 2016 Masters champion is now ranked at 58 and his mark of seven under on Friday was only matched by American Billy Horschel, who is seven under overall.
“I’m probably not back to my best,” said Willett, who won the DP World Tour Championship in August.
“I’m still working on the moves and there’s still shots in there that I don’t like.
“As a whole, the body is night and day to where it was and the movements are good. The ability to travel around the world and play golf now is back there and I’m just in a much better place with everything, really. Hopefully an exciting weekend to come.”
Rahm eyes legend status
England’s Tommy Fleetwood just made the cut at one over par to remain the only player in the world’s top 50 yet to miss a cut in 2019.
Rose is joined on nine under in third place by Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Rahm, 24, looked like he too would share the mark but he converted an eagle on the last to join Willett, capping a fine recovery given he made bogey on his opening two holes.
“I didn’t lose patience or panic, because I know I have the whole round to go and I have the whole day to make it up,” said Rahm, the world number six.
“There’s a lot of history here and a lot of legends on the walls, so it would be great to join that great list of players.”

Fall Movie Preview 2019
New Post has been published on https://esonetwork.com/fall-movie-preview-2019/
Fall Movie Preview 2019
Tumblr media
Fall movie season is here! This is always my favorite time of the year to see movies. There’s such a wonderful variety of films available to see in theaters. Everything from awards season contenders, indie darlings, and exciting space adventures! Get ready to make your way to the theater because this looks like it’s going to be a great season at the movies. Let’s take a look at what’s coming soon.
SEPTEMBER September 13th The Goldfinch Starring: Ansel Elgort, Oakes Fengley, Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard Bring the tissues and prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions because this is gonna be a wild ride. The Goldfinch is based on the Pultizer Prize winning novel by Donna Tart. This is one of the best books I’ve read recently, but it’s quite an emotional journey. It follows 13-year-old Theo Decker after the traumatic death of his mother in an art museum bombing. It’s a haunting and powerful story about the human condition once grief becomes a prominent force in one’s life. The film is directed by John Crowley with Roger Deakins as director of photography. That’s what I call must-see cinema.
youtube
Hustlers Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart Based on a New York Times article, former strip club employees band together to hustle their Wall Street Clients during the late 2000’s financial crisis. This looks a bit like the heist of Oceans 8 meets the real world story of Molly’s Game. It has quite a star studded female cast of movie/TV/and music stars and is directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, The Meddler.)
youtube
September 20th Downton Abbey Starring: Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Boneville, Jim Carter You love Downton Abbey, I love Downton Abbey. Everyone loves Downton Abbey. I can hear the theme song playing in my head just thinking of the movie being released. That’s right, the beloved TV series is coming to the big screen. Hopefully, it won’t be anything like the season 3 finale. (Real fans know the pain and struggle. We can’t go back to that time.) In the film, Downton Abbey will be visited by the royal family. I’m sure it will make for quite an impressive cinematic experience. As a fan of the show, I can’t wait to see it all on the big screen!
youtube
Ad Astra Starring: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler Just two months after showing the world that he doesn’t age in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is back and he’s going to space. It makes sense, fall is the only logical time to release a film in the space genre. (The Martian, Interstellar, First Man, Arrival, Gravity were all released in the fall,.) Ad Astra is all about an astronaut who takes on a mission to uncover the truth about his missing father. The film is directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z, The Immigrant). I just hope Brad Pitt gets to wear his iconic Hawaiian shirt. Audiences demand to see it again.
youtube
September 27th Judy Starring: Renée Zellweger, Finn Wittrock, Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell There’s nothing like a good biographical drama. Throw in musical numbers and it’s a hit in my eyes. Renée Zellweger stars as the iconic Judy Garland in this biopic that explores her life in 1969 as she arrives in London to perform a series of sold out concerts. Word from the Telluride Film Festival is that Renée Zellweger gives a very strong performance as Judy. Could she have an awards season run on her hands for Best Actress? We’ll see very soon!
youtube
OCTOBER
October 4th Joker Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert de Niro, Zazie Beets Joaquin Phoenix stars as the Joker in this standalone film that focuses on the origins of the DC villain. The film received an 8 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, which seems pretty excessive for any movie. I’m just not a movie applauder. It’s unnatural to me. I’m also not much of a Joker enthusiast so I can’t get too excited about this or the way it seemingly wants me to feel sympathy for the Joker. I don’t. He’s a terrorist. However, this is going to be a huge cinematic event. There are striking similarities to 70’s hit films The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver in the first trailers of the film. Director Todd Phillips clearly wanted to make a unique comic book film and this one will have people talking.
youtube
Lucy in the Sky Starring: Natalie Portman, Dan Stevens, Jon Hamm Another space movie! Fall movie season demands it. After returning from space, astronaut Lucy Cola begins to feel withdrawn and disconnected from reality. The film is loosely based on Lisa Nowak, an astronaut who lost her grip on reality after returning to earth after space travel. One thing’s for sure, with a cast including Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, and Dan Stevens, this one promises some impressive acting.
youtube
October 11 Gemini Man Starring: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen An assassin becomes the target of a mysterious government operative who can predict his every move. Soon he finds out that the mysterious operative is a clone of himself. Can Gemini Man help director Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) find critical acclaim again after 2016’s underwhelming Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
youtube
The King Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton Based on Shakespeare’s Henriad, The King follows Henry V as he takes the throne after his father’s death and navigates a kingdom filled with war, chaos, and political strife. While all of that is very interesting, I think we need to discuss the hair in this movie. First of all, there’s Timothée Chalamet’s bowl cut, which is quite a situation. So very round and tragic. Why Timothée? You know you have great hair, but the bowl cut is not your look! Then, there’s Robert Pattinson’s wig. It’s kind of amazing. The hair in this movie alone is going to keep me entertained for 2 hours. The King will be in limited release theaters on October 11th and begin streaming on Netflix November 1st.
youtube
October 18th Zombieland: Double Tap Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin This sequel comes 10 years after the popular zombie comedy first made its way to theaters. A lot has changed for the cast since 2009. Emma Stone has won an Oscar for La La Land, Jesse Eisenberg received a nomination for The Social Network, and Woody Harrelson has appeared in several projects including the Oscar nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and the critically acclaimed series True Detective. That doesn’t stop this cast for returning for a sequel!  This time around, the team is back in the American heartland to face off against evolved zombies.
youtube
The Lighthouse Starring: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe I was initially indifferent towards this movie, but after watching the trailer I have to see it just to solve the mystery of who spilled those beans! Willem Dafoe is going INSANE over it. “Why’d ya spill your beans?” Someone please answer him before he turns into the Green Goblin! This movie is about two lighthouse keepers who try to maintain their sanity while living in seclusion on a remote island in Maine. (It’s also about beans, I think). The cinematography for The Lighthouse has a unique old Hollywood feel that is very intriguing.
youtube
Jojo Rabbit Starring: Taika Watiti, Scarlett Johannson, Roman Griffin, Sam Rockwell Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) directs and stars in Jojo Rabbit, an “anti-hate satire” about a young German boy whose imaginary best friend is an idiotic version of Hitler. One day, he discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home and Jojo’s world is turned upside down. There’s no doubt this will be controversial, but the key word here is satire. Taiki Waititi is Jewish himself and the film is obviously making fun of Nazis.
youtube
NOVEMBER
November 1st The Irishman Starring: Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci Martin Scorsese’s long awaited gangster epic is finally premiering this November. The 3 1/2 hour crime drama (Scorsese loves a good 3-hour runtime!) focuses on the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran a mob hitman who played a role in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Netflix is distributing the film, but it will be available to see in select theaters on November 1st for cinematic purists. It will begin streaming on Netflix November 27th. (Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Go ahead and watch a 3-hour mafia epic with your family for the holiday! It’s Martin’s gift to you.)
youtube
Harriet Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monet, Joe Alwyn The true story of Harriet Tubman and her harrowing escape from slavery that eventually led to the Underground Railroad. Cynthia Ervio is going to be amazing in this role! She was such a breakout star in Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. Can’t wait to see her portrayal of Harriet Tubman.
youtube
Terminator: Dark Fate Starring: Mackenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger The Terminator is back. In yet another installment of the franchise that will last forever, Sarah Connor and a hybrid human must protect a young girl from a newly modified Terminator from the future.
youtube
November 8th Doctor Sleep Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay 39 years after The Shining, it’s getting a sequel. Based on the novel by Steven King, Doctor Sleep focuses on an adult Danny Torrance as he meets a girl with similar “shining” powers and tries to protect her from a cult called The True Knot. There’s a lot of talent involved in this project, but The Shining is untouchable in terms of classic movies. There’s no need to make a sequel. Not to mention, this plot summary sounds kind of weak. Consider me very skeptical that this will be good.
youtube
Last Christmas Starring: Emilia Clarke, Henry Goulding, Emma Thompson A Christmas rom-com! Let’s jump for joy because a Christmas rom com is making its way to theaters! Last Christmas is all about Kate, a depressed woman working as Santa’s elf in a department store. She keeps bumping into the same man, Tom, who may help her find happiness in the holiday season. Henry Goulding/Emilia Clarke romance+Christmas? Sounds like a recipe for the perfect holiday movie!
youtube
Honey Boy Starring: Shia Labeouf, Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe It’s no secret that Shia LaBeouf has had a chaotic lifestyle in his post-Disney days. It looks like audiences are about to find out what has gone on behind-the-scenes in Honey Boy. The film is written by LaBeouf and follows his own experiences with fame and the strained relationship with his dysfunctional father. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges will be playing Shia LaBeouf as a child and teen actor, while Shia LaBeouf will play his own father for a meta twist. As someone who grew up watching Even Stevens and saw Shia LaBeouf’s career progress, this is one of my most anticipated films of the fall.
youtube
November 15th Ford v. Ferrari Starring: Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Catriona Balfe American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles attempt to build a revolutionary race car for Ford to battle Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966. The premise of this movie reminds me a little bit of Ron Howard’s Rush which is a very underrated movie that should be watched if you haven’t seen it.
youtube
The Report Starring: Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, Tim Blake Nelson The Report is a political drama about an FBI agent’s investigation into the CIA’s torture practice on suspected terrorists after 9/11. Adam Driver stars in the film and he’s about to have a major fall movie season. The Report and Marriage Story (more on that one a little later) could easily get him awards buzz. In fact, I predict he’ll be nominated for an Oscar for one of those roles. Plus, he’ll be in Star Wars in December. You’ll be seeing a lot of him in the next few months.
youtube
Charlie’s Angels Starring: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Elizabeth Banks Did we need another Charlie’s Angels reboot after the 2000’s movie trilogy and the ABC TV show? No. Yet there’s nothing Hollywood loves to more than to reboot a franchise we’ve just seen! This time around the angels are played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinski. Elizabeth Banks is directing and co-starring in the project.
youtube
November 22nd Frozen 2 Starring: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf go on an adventure to an enchanted autumn forest to find the origin of Elsa’s powers and save their land. Just when everyone finally got Let it Go out of their heads, Disney is gonna hit us with another Frozen movie. I have to admit, I’m intrigued by the concept of the autumn forest. We need more movies that take place in the fall! It should be it’s own sub-genre.
youtube
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Starring: Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson He’s already played Walt Disney, Captain Phillips, and Sully so it’s fitting that Tom Hanks would play Mr. Rogers on the list of “America’s favorite people” up next. The movie is all about the friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. I cannot wait to see this. If you haven’t watched the documentary about Fred Rogers called Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, do it before this is released! It’s going to add so much depth to the cinematic experience.
youtube
November 27th Knives Out Starring: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette When a famous crime novelist is found dead on his estate, a detective is enlisted to investigate the family. Knives Out is directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, The Last Jedi) and packed with stars. It looks a bit like Bad Times at the El Royale meets the style of a Wes Anderson movie. I’m very interested in the central mystery at play here, but I can’t lie, Chris Evans is the reason I’ll go to the theater for this.
youtube
December 6th Marriage Story Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern This one is gonna be majorly sad, so let’s all take some time to prepare ourselves. A stage director and his actress wife struggle as their marriage falls apart and they proceed with a difficult coast-to-coast divorce. Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha) directed the film which has already been receiving high praise from early festival screenings. This will definitely draw comparisons to Kramer vs. Kramer and Baumback’s The Squid and the Whale based on the trailer’s tone. The juxtaposition of the couple’s happy memories vs. the court scene at the end of the trailer is just heartbreaking. Marriage Story will be available to stream on Netflix December 6th.
youtube
December 13th A Hidden Life Starring: August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts Few movies have affected me the way Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life have. It’s certainly not a movie for everyone, but it works for me. The unconventional narrative, epic cinematography, and orchestral score are unforgettable. Critics from festival screenings have said that A Hidden Life is his best work since The Tree of Life meaning I’ll need to see it ASAP. The film is based on a true story about an Austrian farmer named Franz Jaggerstatter who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. The trailer looks beautiful and poetic.
youtube
December 20th Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Starring: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega The latest Star Wars trilogy will complete with The Rise of Skywalker. Taking place after The Last Jedi, the members left in the Resistance will face the First Order once again. The conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches a breaking point bringing the Skywalker saga to an end. I have so many questions about this movie! Was Kylo Ren actually lying to Rey about her parents in The Last Jedi? Could they really be important people? Will she turn to the dark side like this preview suggests? (I hope not). Why is Palpatine (the villain who died in Return of the Jedi) talking in all of the trailers? Thankfully, J.J. Abrams is returning as director for The Rise of Skywalker to answer all of my questions and hopefully deliver a great Star Wars film.

Jumanji: The Next Level Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest surprise box office hits in recent years, appealing to people of all age groups. It’s no surprise that The Next Level is being released so quickly after the massive success of Welcome to the Jungle. This time around, the group goes back into the game, but a few of their grandfather’s are sucked in as well. That means Kevin Hart will be playing Danny Glover and Dwayne Johnson will be portraying Danny DeVito.
youtube
Cats Starring: Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift Forget Star Wars, forget A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, forget A Hidden Life. Disregard everything on this list. Cats is going to be the cinematic moment of 2019! That CGI? Legendary! The actors could have worn cat suits or make up like the stage play, but director Tom Hooper decided that this is the 21st century…time to try out a new technique called digital fur technology! So now this movie exists. It’s difficult to describe what this digital fur technology looks like, but it’s not cats. I will say the trailer was released with plenty of time before the movie gets to theaters so there’s hope that the finished product will look way better than the original trailer. If I’m being totally honest, I love anything musical, so I’m totally going to see this.
youtube
December 25th Little Women Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern Greta Gerwig’s highly ancitipated second film is a remake of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel, Little Women. You all know the story, but I’ll do a quick plot recap anyway. Little Women is told through the eyes of Jo March as she recounts her life growing up with her 3 sisters: Meg, Amy, and Beth. Each have their own distinct personalities, but have a very strong bond with each other. The film reunites Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet as Jo March and Laurie for a mini-Lady Bird reunion. It also contains a little Big Little Lies reunion with Meryl Streep and Laura Dern. What a great Christmas day release!

That concludes this Fall Movie Preview! As you can tell, there are tons of movies releasing this season in all genres. What are you most excited to see this fall?

Songs From 2018 (one per artist)
Another mixed bag of stuff i either enjoyed a lot, thought was excellent or interesting (regardless of taste… sort of), emerging artists to maybe look out for, and generally music that for whatever reason connected with me in some way, including the odd earworm i just couldn’t shake. Hope you enjoy some of this too and find something new to be taken by. There’s a spotify playlist (below) for easier listening but for the music that wasn’t on there, i’ve posted links next to them so do check them out! Spotify:
(As ever…. as i don’t tumblr or blog or anything (besides this list), this won’t be seen by many (if any?) people so if you like it or think it’s of any worth in any way, please do share this along)
In Alphabetical order:
The 1975 - Love It If We Made It
700 Bliss - Ring The Alarm         (Moor Mother & DJ Haram collab)
Advance Base - Your Dog      (Owen Ashworth is a longtime favourite and always love what he puts out. Such a gifted lyricist and such an empathetic deliverer, just always cutting deep, just always sounding uniquely him. The records & artists he’s putting out on his Orindal footprint are really impressive too - Julie Byrne, Gia Margaret, Dear Nora - so do keep an eye out on those releases)
Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert - Quantum Theory Love Song
Alasdair Roberts w/ Amble Skuse & David McGuiness - a. The Fair Flower of Northumberland b. Johnny O’the Brine (One of my favourite records this year, a quietly inventive old folk beaut from one of my favourite singers on earth. Included two as a. exemplifies his singing that i love so much and b. better highlights the inventiveness of the record)
Alison Cotton - All Is Quiet At The Ancient Theatre
Amen Dunes - Miki Dora
Anderson .Paak - 6 Summers
Angelique Kidjo - Once In A Lifetime        (From her complete re-imagining of the Talking Heads classic Remain In Light record, with all her Benin spirit infused)
Anna & Elizabeth - Mother In The Graveyard
Anna Calvi - As A Man

Aqueduct Ensemble - Cut Grass I
Arctic Monkeys - Four Out Of Five

Barry Walker - Late Heavy Bombardment
Beach House - Dive
Ben Vince - What I Can See     ft. Micachu
Big Red Machine - Forest Green          (Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) & Aaron Dessner (The National) project. I’m likely never not gonna be into Justin’s work, he’s always stretching himself with virtually no regard to expectation and always finding interesting and new spaces)
Birds Of Passage - Another Thousand Eyes
Black Midi - bmbmbm      (Heard about them non-stop all year, about being this incredible live band, and all teenagers, so been intrigued for quite some time. Virtually no online presence, remaining somewhat mysterious, and only a couple of pieces to go by, but curious to see what’s coming from them) https://soundcloud.com/speedywunderground/sw024-black-midi-bmbmbm
Blocks & Escher - One Touch
Blood Orange - Saint
Bodega - Name Escape
Bonny Doon - I Am Here (I Am Alive)

Cornelia Murr - Man On My Mind
Courtney Marie Andrews - May Your Kindness Remain
Damien Jurado - The Last Great Washington State
Daniel Avery - Slow Fade
Daughters - Long Road, No Turns
David Thomas Broughton - Drifting Snow       (An old, unreleased recording lying around, brought out as a seasonal single, and i think it’s beautiful. My favourite live performer, and i would encourage anyone who sees this to check him out both on record and if he's ever in a town near you.) https://davidthomasbroughton.bandcamp.com/track/drifting-snow-seasonal-single
The Dead Tongues - Pale November Dew
Dear Nora - Simulation Feels       (12 years away, and back after renewed interest in their re-issued Mountain Rock LP last year courtesy of Owen Ashworth’s (Advance Base) Orindal Records)
Deux Trois - Roy
DJ Koze - Muddy Funster     ft. Kurt Wagner       (It’s probably fair that “Pick Up” is the best song on the record, but I’m a sucker for Kurt so liked this one a lot too)
Dolphin Midwives - Mirror
Doug Paisley - Drinking With a Friend
Drinks - Real Outside
Durand Jones & The Indications - Don’t You Know
Earl Sweatshirt - Nowhere2go
Earth Eater - Inclined
Emily Fairlight - Body Below
Empress Of - When I’m With Him

Erland Cooper - Solan Goose
Ezra Furman - Suck The Blood From My Wound

Hermit & The Recluse - Sirens       (New project from the rapper Ka, who continues to fascinate, with producer Animoss. This time the concept record combining his personal street stories with Greek mythology, with Orpheus vs The Sirens)
Hilary Woods - Kith
Homeboy Sandman & Edan - #NeverUseTheInternetAgain       (Nice to hear Edan once again after so long, and especially with a favourite of mine in Homeboy Sandman)
Ian William Craig - Discovered In Flat
Idles - Danny Nedelko         (Probably my favourite song of the year, and one of the most beautiful, impassioned & dearly needed statements of love & community we need right now. The video moved me to damned tears, it’s so beautiful)
The Innocence Mission - Green Bus
Institute of Landscape Architecture - Melting Landscapes       (field recordings documenting Alpine glaciers and their changing landscape) https://landscapearchitecture.bandcamp.com/releases
James Blake - If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead

JFDR - My Work (String Version/Live)
John Prine - Summer’s End
Jon Hopkins - Emerald Rush
Joseph Shabason - Forest Run       (From his 2nd record, Anne, a touching record on his mother’s Parkinson’s Disease featuring interviews with her over his ambient, sax-effected work)
JPEGMAFIA - 1539 N. Calvert
Julia Holter - I Shall Love 2
Julia Jacklin - Head Alone
Kacey Musgraves - Slow Burn       (I was late to this record, but i may have listened to it more than any other come December-time.)
Kadhja Bonet - Delphine
Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury
Kathryn Joseph - From When I Wake The Want Is
Kelsey Lu - Shades Of Blue
Khruangbin - Maria También
Kim Petras - Heart To Break       (There’s actually a chance this is my favourite song of the year)

Mich Cota - Kijà/Care                (Two-spirit Canadian Algonquin artist who, after seeing her supporting Baby Dee at Cafe Oto very recently, had me excited for the bangers to come!)
Michael Nau - Funny Wind
Milo - Stet
Miss Red - Dagga
Mitski - Nobody
Moses Sumney - Rank and File
Moulay Ahmed El Hassani - Yak Ennas Mlklil Darou Labas
Mount Eerie - Tintin In Tibet
Mountain Man - Rang Tang Ring Toon      (8 years since their last record, and so good to hear their harmonies once again. Ever as beautiful and transportive, but this time more wiser. It’s a really lovely record and such a needed balm)
Nap Eyes - Every Time The Feeling
Nathan Bowles - Now If You Remember          (Didn’t know this was a cover, originally by Julie Tippetts, but it lodged itself in my head pretty good. Aquarium Drunkard rightly suggested an album or two back that, if Banjo Futurism is a thing then Nathan Bowles would likely be leading the pack. The remainder of this record definitely reflects that)
Nathan Salsburg - Impossible Air
The Necks - Body https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/body
Neko Case - Hell-On
Nils Frahm - My Friend The Forest
Noname - Ace       ft. Saba & Smino

The Other Years - Red-Tailed Hawk

Panda Bear - Dolphin
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake
Penelope Trappes - Burn On
Peter Broderick - Words Of Love       (An unreleased Arthur Russell song Peter got to record after befriending friends and family of the great man. Part of a free album Peter released of Arthur Russell covers at Christmas featuring one other unreleased song. Do check it, it’s lovely)
Phosphorescent - Christmas Down Under        (I could pick many from this record, but the sci-fi-like presence in the vocals gives it a strangeness and position i really loved)
Preoccupations - Espionage
Pusha T - Come Back Baby
Richard Swift - Broken Finger Blues        (Such a dear and sad loss. I actually included this song a few years ago when Aquarium Drunkard featured it, so feel like i should select a different one from this most-recent record.... but dammit if it doesn’t highlight the very best of Swift’s talents).
Richmond Fontaine - Horses In Las Vegas https://richmondfontaine.bandcamp.com/track/horses-in-las-vegas
Robby Hecht & Caroline Spence - Over You
Rocheman - Parades I & II        (Caught/discovered Rocheman supporting Jenny Hval earlier this year in a church, and was really into it so I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes from here)
Rosali - I Wanna Know
Rosalía - Pienso en Tu Mirá
Rosanne Cash - She Remembers Everything
Roy Montgomery - Outsider Love Ballad No. 1   ft. Katie Von Schleicher
Saba - Life

Sophie Hunger - I Opened A Bar
Sophie Hutchings - Repose
Sorry GIrls - Waking Up
Sourakata Koita - Ha-Madi     (I don’t usually include too many - if any - reissues, but i love kora music and this record, “en Hollande” (’84), was a great discovery this year)
Stella Donnelly - Boys Will Be Boys      (I was sure i had this in last year’s list when it was a single, but appears not so including it now with the album release).
Steven A. Clark - Feel This Way
Suuns - Make it Real
Swamp Dogg - Answer Me, My Love
Szun Waves - Constellation
Terje Isungset - Blue Horizon     ft. Maria Skranes   (all the music is played by intruments made of ice)
Theo Alexander - Matter of Balance
Tierra Whack - Black Nails or Hungry Hippo      (A record of 15 one-minute tracks, full of ideas and all kinds of fun. Check out the “Whack World” short film for the record)
Tim Hecker - Keyed Out
Tinashe - Throw A Fit     (Came across this song randomly via a Youtube video of dancer Jojo Gomez, and the attitude of it all just kind of thrilled me)
Tirzah - Gladly
Toby Hay - Bears Dance
Tom Demac & Real Lies - White Flowers
Tomberlin - Seventeen
Tracey Thorn - Queen
Tracyanne & Danny - It Can’t Be Love Unless It Hurts    (I think, actually, that Jacqueline off the record would edge my choice here, but i needed a little more Tracyanne (Camera Obscura) in here to highlight the two of them)
Tropical Fuck Storm - You Let My Tyres Down     (Aussie band made up of various Aussie bands, most recognizably Gareth Liddiard of The Drones, with an excellent debut record “A Laughing Death In Meatspace” that along with their name fits the music on this record. It’s acerbic, feral, sardonic, and plain great)

Ursula K. Le Guin & Todd Barton - Heron Dance
Valee - Womp Womp     ft. Jeremih

Wooden Shjips - Red Line
Y La Bamba - Mujeres
Yo La Tengo - a. You Are Here and b. Ashes
Yoshinori Hayashi - Overflow
Zilla With Her Eyes Shut - Whatever It Is

Shuffle Up: Searching for Bryce Harper
Tumblr media
It’s been one of those years for Bryce Harper (AP Photo/Laurence Kesterson)
Ah, the outfield. Land of all the fun stats. If you can keep your players on the field, you might just get somewhere.
The numbers don’t matter in a vacuum; what matters is how the player prices relate to one another. Assume a 5×5 scoring system, as always. Everyone listed here has outfield eligibility in the Yahoo game at the current time. Players at the same cost are considered even, and don’t fret when players are just a buck or two apart, that’s not a big deal.
I’m not ranking the injured guys; it just becomes a silly game of “Who has the most injury optimism?”
[Yahoo Fantasy Football leagues are open: Sign up now for free!]
And I’m not a doctor. (Somebody get me a doctor.)
Have some disagreements? Have some major disagreements? That’s good! That’s why we have a game. I welcome your respectful disagreement anytime: @scott_pianowski on Twitter.
$44 Mike Trout $42 Mookie Betts $37 J.D. Martinez $32 Andrew Benintendi $30 Charlie Blackmon $30 Giancarlo Stanton $29 Aaron Judge $27 Christian Yelich $27 Eddie Rosario $27 Nelson Cruz $27 Bryce Harper $26 Scooter Gennett $25 Nick Castellanos
The good news with Harper is that he’s still adding value as an offensive player. His OPS+ of 124 is actually the median of his career (though his career average OPS+ is 139). A .366 OBP is still excellent; he leads the NL in walks. He has 20 home runs and a .475 slugging.
Then again, every number in Harper’s slash line is lower than we project. And the .216 average is 62 points lower than his career mark.
Perhaps he’s running into a lot of bad luck. His hard-hit rate is a career high, and his line-drive rate is almost identical to last year’s. He’s striking out a little more this year, but a 3.4-percent boost isn’t cause for alarm. A .223 BABIP is an obvious outlier, especially when combined with his batted-ball profile. Harper’s pull-happy profile also means more outs via the shift — maybe it would be in his best interests to lay down a bunt now and again, take an easy hit (especially when leading off an inning, when a baserunner is a boon for scoring chances).
Harper zone contact is a career low, which is surprising, but he’s not getting himself out — his chase rate is under his career mark.
I’m floor driven with my first-round picks, so I would not make Harper a Top 15 player if redrafting today. But he’s be a ticklish play anywhere in the second round. His bad season isn’t that bad. And his upside remains the moon (or maybe just slight of the moon; perhaps only Trout and Betts can get there).
Nick Castellanos hit his 10th home run of the season.
He’ll be an All-Star next month. pic.twitter.com/r5c9jI2874
— Brad Galli (@BradGalli) June 26, 2018
I don’t know why pitchers keep challenging Castellanos, by far the only formidable stick in the Detroit lineup. Although the Tigers are 6-11 since Miguel Cabrera suffered his season-ending injury, Castellanos keeps rolling along (.288/.356/.667, seven homers). He’s fifth in hard-hit rate (training Olson, Carpenter, Suarez, and J.D. Martinez), and he’s No. 17 overall in soft-contact avoidance. Look at this messy Tigers lineup. I’d take my chances with anyone else . . . Does Rosario look out of place here? He shouldn’t. Here’s his last calendar year: .307/.346/.557, 102 runs, 35 home runs, 102 RBIs, 13 steals . . . Blackmon has too much back class for me to take him out of the 30s. Maybe this means nothing, but June has historically been his weakest month. He turned 32 on the weekend, so it’s too soon to worry about age. A .301 BABIP might not look out of order, but it’s 34 points below his career average. Hang in.
$22 Jose Martinez $22 George Springer $21 Marcell Ozuna $20 Matt Kemp $20 Starling Marte $18 Justin Upton $17 Michael Brantley $16 Max Muncy $15 Nomar Mazara $15 Shin-Soo Choo $15 Khris Davis $15 Mitch Haniger $15 Rhys Hoskins $15 Odubel Herrera $15 Juan Soto $15 Yasiel Puig
Very quietly Choo has been a Top 21 outfielder, producing in every category except stolen bases (and he’s not a total zero there, he has three). You just hope he can stay healthy in his age-36 season (the calendar flips for him on July 13). Choo isn’t getting a bump from Arlington this year (his OPS is 20 points higher on the road), but he does jump to a .933 OPS against right-handed pitching. He’s one of my favorites, an Ibanez All-Star to be sure. Boring but reliable veterans are a lovely target area in all fantasy sports. We don’t have to market our teams, we just want the numbers.
Puig had a .193 average in late April, when a hip injury forced him to the DL. In his 46 games since returning, he’s been solid — .295/.364/.548, nine homers. Somehow Puig only produced 24 runs and 20 RBIs from that slash, but we’ll take it. And for all the mistakes he makes through his mercurial ways, sometimes you get splashy highlights, too.
$14 Brandon Belt $14 Andrew McCutchen $14 Brandon Nimmo $14 Tommy Pham $13 Adam Jones $13 Aaron Hicks $13 Matt Olson $12 Whit Merrifield $12 Carlos Santana $12 Wil Myers $12 Jurickson Profar $12 Kyle Schwarber $12 Dee Gordon $12 Cody Bellinger $12 Adam Eaton $11 Derek Dietrich $11 Ian Desmond $11 Nick Markakis $11 Ryan Braun $11 David Peralta $10 Scott Schebler $10 Joc Pederson $10 Brett Gardner $10 Jesse Winker $10 Ronald Acuna $10 Adam Duvall $10 Eric Thames $9 Jason Heyward
Is Gordon’s toe injury still a concern? This is what he’s done in 30 games since returning from the disabled list: .246/.261/.285, with five steals in eight attempts. You knew you’d get zero power — no homers, seven RBIs. He’s scored a paltry 13 runs. I don’t think he’s healthy right now; at least, I’m not going to pay for him on the assumption that he is.
Although Heyward’s OBP has dipped a little in the No. 2 slot — a misleading change, since batting eighth in front of the pitcher is a driver of walks — he’s taken to the slot nicely, slashing .313/.347/.473, with 17 runs and 16 RBIs in 26 games. He’s shut down the running game and he is not a major power threat, but perhaps he can be a solid three-category contributor now.
$8 Gerardo Parra $8 Austin Meadows $8 Brian Anderson $8 Randal Grichuk $8 Chris Taylor $8 Mark Trumbo $8 Ender Inciarte $7 Avisail Garcia $7 Carlos Gonzalez $7 Jason Kipnis $7 Josh Reddick $7 Ian Happ $7 Josh Harrison $7 Stephen Piscotty $7 Teoscar Hernandez $7 Enrique Hernandez $7 Joey Gallo $6 Gorkys Hernandez $6 Ben Zobrist $6 Hunter Renfroe $6 Harrison Bader $6 Lonnie Chisenhall $5 Dustin Fowler $5 Manuel Margot $5 Gregory Polanco $5 Marwin Gonzalez $5 Jackie Bradley Jr. $5 Charlie Culberson $5 Delino DeShields $5 Kevin Pillar
Kipnis still has horrendous seasonal numbers, but he perked up over his last three weeks: .280/.357/.480, with four homers. His line-drive rate is up six percent from last year. Interestingly, he’s hitting .286 when shifted against, and .221 against a traditional defense . . . Bader would instantly jump into double-digits on my board if the Cardinals made a clear commitment to him . . . Polanco is a pain in the neck for weekly-lineup players, as the Pirates have four outfielders for three spots and he’s not the primary guy in that rotation.
$4 Albert Almora $4 Michael Taylor $4 Jon Jay $4 Corey Dickerson $4 Denard Span $4 Jose Pirela $4 Jonathan Villar $4 Nick Williams $4 Niko Goodrum $4 Michael Conforto $3 Danny Valencia $3 Ehire Adrianza $3 Alen Hanson $3 Eduardo Nunez $3 Travis Jankowski $3 Daniel Descalso $3 Mallex Smith $3 Jose Bautista $3 Curtis Granderson $3 Mark Canha $3 Franmil Reyes $3 Daniel Palka $3 Max Kepler
Mallex Smith is showing modest growth as a hitter, though a 97 OPS+ is still an eyelash below the league average of 100. Worst of all, he’s not improving as a base stealer —successful on just 15-of-22 swipes. And the Rays don’t prefer him at the top of the order, either; he’s batted seventh or lower in 49 of his 56 starts. Right now Smith is giving you a slightly-favorable average in a mixed league, a handful of steals — hopefully the caught-stealings don’t hurt you — disappointing runs scored, and no pop. It’s not like the fantasy community is going crazy for Smith, but he’s been moderately overrated for a while. The closer you get to Smith, the less fun he is.
$2 Ben Gamel $2 Tony Kemp $2 Rajai Davis $2 Brock Holt $2 Charlie Tilson $2 Cory Spangenberg $2 Jake Cave $2 Jacob Marisnick $2 Adam Engel $2 Chad Pinder $2 Scott Kingery $2 Robbie Grossman $2 Alex Gordon $2 Billy Hamilton $2 Lewis Brinson $2 Trey Mancini $2 Jarrod Dyson $2 Kevin Kiermaier $1 Hernan Perez $1 Ryan Rua $1 Matt Joyce $1 JaCoby Jones $1 Chris Owings $1 Kole Calhoun $0 Dexter Fowler

2017 MMA Junkie Gathering Trip Report
Tumblr media
The previous Junkie Gathering in 2015, I broke my thumb by slamming an SUV door shut on it after exiting the car. I was carrying a bag of groceries in that hand, and managed to leave the thumb in the door while using my other hand to shut it. I definitely thought that the sane thing to do would be to cancel my trip, but I just couldn’t do it. I remember thinking to myself, “gotta be a soldier!” I kept my finger in a cup of ice and hopped on a bus the following morning.
I kept my finger in a cup of ice the entire week; asking bartenders for a cup of ice water everywhere I went. People kept wondering why I wasn’t talking too much. I guess they couldn’t tell that I was dying in pain and crying on the inside. (Plus, I was the new guy and hadn’t gotten to know everybody yet.)
Looking back, I was definitely crazy for going to Vegas for seven nights with a newly-broken thumb to meet a bunch of people for the first time. Zero regrets, though. I knew the memories would be worth it, and it ended up making a pretty cool story, too.
After spending some time on the east coast (mostly Long Island, NY), I flew into L.A. to spend a couple weeks with my family before going to Vegas for The Gathering. On Monday, May 22nd, I caught a flight from L.A. into Vegas and arrived around 4:30 p.m.
I checked-in to the Oasis Gold Spike in Downtown Vegas, right by the Fremont Experience. It was my second time staying there and I had a good time while hangin’ there. Bit of a party scene.
I did my thing for a bit, then it was time to connect with the Junkies. They were at the Mandalay Bay Sportsbook, and I was on my way.
Lackey was the first to greet me when I arrived, then I went around saying hello to everyone else. Buffalo Blue was already eight shots of Jager deep into an eventual 26 shots. I loved how happy and excited he was about it. Seeing Lackey and Blue already having a blast, I was filled with giddy ‘cos I knew we were in for one helluva week.
There were only a few of us at the sportsbook on Monday night. I remember arriving there, but the rest of the night is a blur to me. I don’t remember it. Smart money says we got wasted, then I went to my room and crashed.
Tuesday morning, I arrived at the sportsbook with a bottle of Wild Turkey American Honey Whiskey. I shared it with John Hooper Raynes, as he had told me that he does not like honey whiskey. He liked this one, however, and agreed that it’s better than the rest, i.e. Jack Daniels and Jim Beam. The reason for that is Wild Turkey uses real honey, while the others use honey liqueur.
At one point, Lackey, myself, Spider Rico, rookies Ryan Dunlay, Mike Noles and Jon Huerta rolled to the parking lot to get our smoke on. Lackey said it was the biggest smoke sesh in Junkie Gathering history. I think Doncho may have been with us, as well.
Before the radio show started, we surprised Goze with Danny the producer, who Jason Lackey had arranged to fly out to the Gathering as a surprise for George and Goze. Goze was happy to finally meet Danny in person for the first time, but wasn’t too thrilled that we “got” him.
MMA Junkie Radio ended at noon, and the Flag Football game was supposed to start at 6 p.m. I assumed I would have some time to get back to my room and get changed, but never got the chance. I can’t remember what I did exactly between those hours, which probably means I had a pretty good time.
It was around 100 degrees out and we were about to go to the park for a football game and BBQ. I was wearing black jeans. There was no time to go get changed, so I tried to look for shorts in the casino shops. “At the end of the day” I decided not to spend $70 on some shorts and instead made my own by rolling up my jeans.
During the football game is when I made Michael Sanchez do his first set of 10 of 100 push-ups he owes me for losing a bet. I bet him 100 push-ups (10 at a time) that Germaine De Randamie would defeat Holly Holm, with the winner getting to request the pushups whenever he pleases.
I didn’t play in the game, but it looked like everyone had a blast. I helped Sam the Chef set up the BBQ and he killed it on the grill. We had some good food and good laughs; it was a good night all around. An excellent way to kick off the 2017 Junkie Gathering.
Tuesday night is a blur. All I can remember are the Jell-O shots. I only had one; I spat my second one back out. Tasted disgustingly like medicine to me. I don’t do Jell-O shots, especially if they’re made with low-grade booze, which this batch clearly was.

I missed the radio show Wednesday morning and got to the sportsbook during the Manchester United game. There were a lot less people there watching it than I anticipated. I hung there for a bit after the game ended, then went off to do my own thing.
The events that day were Escape Room and Beer Park. I was performing on a comedy show that night, which took place at the same time as Beer Park, so I had planned to skip the Escape Room to get some rest before the show.
The show went really well. They rebooked me for July 5th, so I plan to be back in Vegas for International Fight Week. I’ll also pick up some spots at the LA Comedy Club, where Adam Hunter will be headlining that week. Should be good times, hope some of you will be in town!
Thursday morning at the sportsbook, I got my second set of 10 (of 100) pushups from Mike Sanchez. After the show, we went to have lunch at Toque Del Sabor Peruvian Restaurant, which is where “The Time is Junkie Press Conference” was being held. The food was solid and Burt Watson came out as a surprise, which was great. The press conference went on and was hilarious. Everybody crushed.
Mike Waluk presented a video that his wife Kindra, Billy MacDonald and Jason Ford helped him put together. It featured footage of fighters, MMA personalities and even GG and Goze’s parents congratulating them on a successful 10 years with the show. I got to see Mike get some of the footage while I was in Vegas for the MMA Awards earlier this year. It took a lot of work and was an excellent gift.
Sam All Jam asked me if I would be able to do 10mins of stand-up if he got me the mic and I said yes, but then he came back and said that he was told there wouldn’t be time. We all ended up just standing around and shooting the shit for over an hour, so that left me a little puzzled, because there appeared to be plenty of time to kill.
Next was a surprise Goze had in store for us, which was a special visit to The Ultimate Fighter Gym. We hung out there for a while and got to see every part of the gym, which was a real treat for any hardcore fight fan/MMA Junkie. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
Tumblr media
We all went our separate ways following the visit to the TUF Gym. I went back to my room to get some rest for the evening ahead. The majority of the gang was going to the Purple Reign show, while some were going to a Jennifer Lopez concert and a couple of us to a “foodie” event at the Palazzo.
Duane Maness told me about the foodie event, called the Las Vegas Epicurean Affair. It’s a once a year event where 80 of the best chefs in Vegas serve up dishes.
I really wish this event was part of the Gathering, because it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. Wish you guys could have enjoyed it with me. The food was amazing, and there was so much of it at every corner. The booze, too! All kinds of great, original cocktails everywhere. Including craft, draft beers, wine, gin, whiskey and pretty much anything your heart desired. I had a really great time and wish there were a group of Junkies there to enjoy it with me. I can’t imagine how much more fun it would have been.
The plan was to meet the rest of the Junkies for karaoke at Ellis Island later that night, but I had to check out of my room early the following morning, so I decided it was best to skip the karaoke and instead pack up and get a good night’s sleep.
Friday morning, I got ready to check out of my hotel early so I can get to the sportsbook ahead of time for the radio show. The plan was to present a framed Rick Budo t-shirt to Gorgeous George and Goze, for them to hang in their studio. (Copperheart, Billy MacDonald and Carla Duran collectively had the idea for it.) I did not want to miss this for the world. I had to make sure I was there for it.
The plan was to check out of my hotel and go check into my AirBnB, but I did not have time to do that. I checked out of my room and went straight to the studio, carrying my suitcase with me. When I got to the studio, Billy informed me that the plan had been canceled/changed because he was told by someone (Danny, if I recall correctly) that there wouldn’t be time for it. The new plan was to present it at lunch at Texas de Brazil.
By now I had realized that I left my suit hanging in the closet of the hotel room I just checked out of. I decided to go check into my AirBnB, go back to the hotel to grab my suit, take the suit back to my AirBnB, then head to Texas de Brazil to meet everyone for lunch and the presentation of the framed Budo shirt. But before I left the studio, I asked Billy to confirm that they were 100% for sure not going to be presenting it at the studio. He confirmed, and I left.
When I got to Texas de Brazil, first thing I did is find Billy to make sure they had not presented it. He told me that they in fact did end up up presenting it at the studio.
That hurt, because I really wanted to be there for it. I’m one of the few Junkies lucky enough to meet Budo. I had some really good times with him and he ended up being my best friend on the east coast. It meant a lot to me to be there during the presentation of the gift, and I was really bummed for missing it.
We had a great meal. I sat between Gus from Chicago and Jersey Mike, the Rookie of the Year. Afterwards, I caught a ride back to my hotel to get some rest before the wild night ahead.
Tumblr media
The Royal Rumble/10th Anniversary party was scheduled for 10 p.m. and I arrived at the sportsbook at around 9:45. George and Goze’s dad arrived after me; we both thought we were going to be late, but were surprised to find a gang of Junkies hangin’ outside the studio.
I was freshly shaved, suited up and was not wearing a hat, so I caught some Junkies off guard. “Gabe, is that you?!” Carla yelled out. Shaving my beard (along with suiting up) was my weird way of paying respects to GG, Goze and the show for the 10th anniversary.
After shooting the shit for a bit, we made our way to the 1923 Bourbon Bar, where the party was taking place. Everybody was there, except Sam the Chef, who got fully dressed for the party but decided to take a nap before leaving and ended up missing the whole thing.
Drink in hand, I made my way around the party, talking to old friends and getting to know new ones. Pretty soon, the “Royal Rumble” started and MMA personalities started joining the action, one after another. Duane Maness was sharing his box of cigars in the cigar room, with Junkies like Dante Morgan and Lerone “L-Train” Gainey taking part. (“L-Train” is the nickname I gave Lerone during this year’s Gathering. He didn’t like it at first, but he warmed up to it.)
Tumblr media
I had a good chat with comedian Richard Hunter, who invited me to be a guest on his Phone Booth Fighting podcast when he and Frank Mir come to Los Angeles for UFC 214 in July. I’m looking forward to that.
At one point, I left the Bourbon Bar with rookie Junkies Geoffrey and Kyle. Kyle was in search of miniature alcohol bottles, and thinking it was a good idea to get some, Geoffrey and I tagged along. Each casino shop we stopped at had their prices higher than we’d hoped, so after wasting half an hour, we called the mission a fail, tucked our tails and headed back to the party.
The drinks kept pouring and the fun kept going. Buffalo Blue started dancing and grinding with a random girl at the party. Her friend was sitting there, so I took her by the hand and started dancing with her. After a bit, she started grinding on my junk. I was completely flaccid (thanks, whiskey!) and she wasn’t changing that, so she got upset and went to sit back down.
Rookie Ryan from Sacramento asked me if I would smoke him out. Like a gentleman, I said of course. We left the party, went to the parking lot, had ourselves a smoke and headed right back. When we got back to the Bourbon Bar, we could not find the entrance. We were puzzled for a moment, but then I grabbed the wall and pulled a door right open. It was bizarre. Maybe you had to be there.
The party came to a close and the lot headed our separate ways. I went straight back to my room and crashed.
After striking out with ladies at the Bourbon Bar, I woke up Saturday morning and decided to get together with a Tinder match. She turned out to be a stripper who works at the Crazy Horse Gentlemen’s Club, so needless to say, I had quite a fun start to my Saturday; my last day in town.
I headed down to the Mandalay Bay sportsbook in the afternoon and met up with the crew before going up to Slice of Vegas for Trivia Night, which was the final 2017 MMA Junkie Gathering event I would personally be attending. (The official final event would be a Gabriel Iglesias/“Fluffy” comedy show that night, which I opted not to attend for several reasons, mainly because I needed to be packed, ready and rested for my early 7 a.m. flight.)
The Trivia was fun; my team consisted of Sam All Jam, DJ Zoo, BillyMac, L-Train, Spider Rico and four newbies whose names I don’t recall, mainly because this was the only event they attended all week. A couple of them left pretty early on, taking our team from nine people down to seven. Even with a disadvantage, we ended up in third place. I didn’t feel bad about losing, though, because I don’t think the winners received a prize. As far as I was concerned, we won!
Tumblr media
Sam All Jam reminded me that Sanchez still owes me 80 push-ups, so I called Mike to the center of the room, where he proceeded to give me my 10, as a crowd watched on and counted. He gave me 30 (of 100) this Gathering and owes me 70 more going into the next...
When the event wrapped up, I headed back to my AirBnB, got some sleep and then started packing. Once I was packed, I went to meet up with the Junkies at Centre Bar (or is it Center Bar?) in the Luxor, which was our late night headquarters. The majority of them had just gotten back from the Fluffy comedy show.
We had some drinks, and enjoyed each others company and conversation. One by one, those who were catching early flights said their goodbye’s and headed to their rooms. Eventually, it was my turn. I said goodbye to the few who were still left, who themselves were getting ready to leave. I went back to my AirBnB to grab my luggage, and from there, straight to the airport.
Another fun, instant-classic Junkie Gathering in the books. We can’t thank the Garcia brothers enough for what they have created. I surely look forward to seeing you all at the next one... And if you’re ever in L.A. or N.Y., don’t be afraid to hit up your Cousin Gabe!

Is The Butt Chin a Dealbreaker?
So obviously since it’s Texans Patriots week in the playoffs and there’s not much to talk about football-wise, naturally all I can think about is the mystical nature of the butt chin. How does a butt chin form? In the womb? Is it genetic? I’m sure some quick Googling could reveal the actual medical answer but I really don’t like risking Google Images popping up out of nowhere so I think I will continue living in mystery.
Of course this week’s matchup features 2 of the most prominent butt chins in the universe; Tom Brady and Bill O’Brien. Don’t really need to know anything about sports to know that Brady wears the butt chin better, as evidenced here.
Tumblr media
Directly compared to Bill O’Briens....
Tumblr media
Let’s have a closer look....
Tumblr media
Clearly a black hole into the upside down that may have captured Brock Osweiler’s entire soul.
Anyways, this got me thinking (Carrie Bradshaw style of course)...is the butt chin a deal breaker? Upon some extensive research, it appears that at least in the celebrity world most of the butt chins are seen on men. For me at this point it’s going to take a lot more than a butt chin to scare me away; single girls don’t get to be that picky here in Boston. It turns out that I never realized half of these celebrities even had butt chins before stumbling upon a Buzzfeed article listing 46 of them. Of course Buzzfeed has already covered this because #RealNews. Here are my top 10, coincidentally almost all male.
10. Demi Lovato
Tumblr media
No surprise here, I hate Demi Lovato. Like she’s top 5 for me on most hated celeb status. Ever since she came out saying she was anorexic at age 5 and ignored her way more famous and well-liked sister Poot Lovato for her whole life I really just couldn’t get on board the Lovato train (big fan of Poot of course).  There’s only one girl on this list, and since I clearly despise her, she’s in at #10. Her butt chin would be the least of the deal breakers for me.
9. Wario
Tumblr media
I’m going to be honest here, Wario is a lame Super Mario Brother. As a girl I obviously always played with Peach or Yoshi because he’s fucking cute but Wario always reminded me of a fat, creepy cook in the back of some old diner. Sure his mustache is fire and his weight makes me feel less body conscious but he’s not cracking the top 10 here. Butt chin is pretty solid though.
8. John Travolta
Tumblr media
Number 8 spot, I must specify, is for YOUNG John Travolta. If you had told me at 10 years old that Danny Zuko would turn into Adele Nazeem/Scarlett Johansenn creep I would have slapped you. I’m confident 1980′s John Travolta made the butt chin hot, and it’s a damn shame it has mysteriously disappeared from his face after I’m sure 0 plastic surgeries and no drug use...
7. Ashton Kutcher
Tumblr media
Ashton Kutcher always has me confused. Is he hot or no? In this case I don’t think the butt chin is a deal breaker but I just can’t get the Von Dutch trucker hat visions out of my head so he’s in the middle of the pack. Being married to Mila Kunis brings you up like 4 notches though so good for you, Christopher.
6&5: Matt Damon/Ben Affleck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course Matt Damon and Ben Affleck both have butt chins. Ben Affleck wears it better but it’s because he’s kind of an asshole which always makes you more physically attractive.
4. Peter Griffin
Tumblr media
If we’re sticking with the honesty here I’ve watched probably 1 episode of Family Guy in my life. I put this here to impress any guys reading and make them think I’m cooler but writing this kind of defeats the purpose. I just didn’t know what else to say. His chin looks like a sack of balls and Kim Kardashian’s ass at the same time so on visuals alone he cracks the top 5.
3. Jon Stamos
Tumblr media
Uncle Jesse gets the #3 spot on name alone. I just can’t put Uncle Jesse any lower than 3 without feeling like it’s something I’m going to regret the rest of my life. That face changed my life.
2. Dan Hedaya aka Mel Horowitz aka Cher’s Dad
Tumblr media
This butt chin is that of a REAL MAN. He’s a lawyer, a single dad, he’s masculine, working on his eating habits to stay healthy...what more could you ask for? If you’re out there wondering how to rock the butt chin and still get the ladies (after all he had multiple baby mommas that produced Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd so), take notes from Mr. Horowitz.
1. The GOAT
Tumblr media
Come on here. Like everything else I do, it starts and ends with Brady. He’s the greatest quarterback of all time and he’s the greatest butt chin of all time NO QUESTION. In the butt chin hall of fame there’s a bust of his face at the entrance. He can cover it up with some facial hair and add a popped collar like he did here, or he can let it show, fresh faced while wearing his Uggs. Sorry Billy O’Brien, you’re going to lose this game on Saturday and you lost the war for best butt chin.
