Reservation Policy In India Two thousand years ago the great philosopher Aristotle said, "Whenever equal behavior is treated, even then injustice arises and when uneven behavior is treated equally". It is a deep statement that is in the heart of equality- basic human rights. Every human being deserves the same treatment. The most important, comprehensive, and violent discrimination in India is the old caste system. The main idea of Gandhiji wast to give equal rights to Dalits. Untouchability was abolished by the Constitution in 1952 and it was declared a crime. Reservation in India is a supportive action taken by the government for fixed quotas where some seats in private and government institutes are reserved for socially and educationally backward communities, scheduled castes and tribes. Leaders like Rajarshee Shahu Maharaj, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar took initiatives to help backward class people. They started giving free education to them. However, there are state laws that exceed this 50% limit and are subject to litigation in the Supreme Court. For example, caste-based reservations are at 69%, and in Tamilnadu state, it applies to about 87% of the population. Now the question arises whether there is a need to review the reservation policy in India or be with the tradition? The original idea of reservation was magnificent because it was in all good intentions. Initially, the percentage of reservations was 12.5% for SCs and 5% for the STs but these percentages were subsequently enhanced decade by decade. The SCs and STs in India together constitute 24.56%, OBCs 51%, economically weaker sections 10%, and Muslims 12 percent. All this adds up to 97%. When the whole country is backward, where is the justification for special measures?
We have tried out the reservation idea for 50 years. But they have made no difference in their conditions. This policy is being bartered for a vote. It has become a tool to meet narrow political ends. Reservation is fair, as far as it provides appropriate positive discrimination for the benefit of the downtrodden and economically backward sections of the society. But when it tends to harm the society and ensure privileges to some at the cost of others, it should be done away with. By Bidhubhusan Rath X Community Member of ThoughtSeal

DOES MODERNIZATION LEAD TO CULTURAL LOSS? Nov 9 was the date when the decision for the most debated topic, Ayodhya Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid dispute, was taken. It was neither in favor of the Hindus nor the Muslims. Both of them were given equal rights. No one was discriminated. We all know that India is a diverse and a secular country. India being culturally developed, is also leading towards modernization. Modernization, in a broad sense, implies to transformation of traditional, rural and agrarian society into secular, industrial and urban one. This might seem a positive change to be brought in the society but some people think that it degrades our cultural values. They think so because in order to achieve modernization various industries are set-up, construction of roads take place, newer technologies are developed and most importantly, people change their lifestyle. People change the way they dress, live and talk and this leads to misunderstanding among spiritual people that the people are losing their traditions and cultural values due to modernization. But in reality it is not so. In order to become a developed country, modernization is must. If there is no modernization then there won’t be new technologies which will make our life, in the 21st century, difficult. But the thing is, just wearing trendy clothes, using newer technologies and living in modern apartments does not make one modern. Modernization rather has a broader and deeper meaning. Just as culture means the ideas and customs that one person or the society follows, modernization is upgrading the culture according to the needs of the developing world. Now the crucial question is whether modernization lead to cultural loss. For this let us take example of the Ayodhya case. The verdict of this case was given recently. Now this topic is worth thinking upon. If modernization would have led to cultural loss then no one would have stood up regarding this topic. The people would have lost their traditions and customs and would not have cared about it. But surprisingly the situation is opposite. People are supporting their religion and fighting for their rights.
So we cannot really conclude that modernization leads to cultural loss. But we should keep in mind that modernization means accepting the contemporary ideas which are beneficial for the society. Also, following our custom doesn’t mean following malpractices and discriminating other groups. People should understand that along with following the culture, modernization of the nation is equally important. VIDULA PATIL IX MEMBER OF THOUGHTSEAL

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT: A THING THAT DECIDES THE PROGRESS OF A NATION The term Women Empowerment refers to empowering women with education, employment, decision making, and better health in view of an equal and just society. Empowerment is a process to make the women financially independent, educated and progressive, enjoying a good social status. According to the provisions of the Constitution of India, it is a legal point to grant equality to women in society in all spheres just like males. Empowering women is the main motto of the development department because an empowered mother with a child makes the bright future of any nation. They also improve the nation's literacy rate and make them an asset to the nation. Women constitute half the population of the whole country's population and need to be independent in every area for the holistic development of women and children. I would like to end it with a slogan: "Existence of women is the base of a beautiful life."

WOMEN SAFETY We all know that our country India is famous for its different customs and culture throughout the world. India is a country where special care is taken for the safety and respect of women. Women have been given the status of Goddess Lakshmi. If we talk about twenty first century, then women are working at par with men in every field, whether it is politics, banking, school, sports, police or the desire to fly in the sky. Women like Goddess Lakshmi are worshiped but negative aspects towards women cannot be ignored. The importance of protection of women is very important whether it is at home, or in office. The protection of women is very broad in itself, women themselves feel unsafe especially if they want to go out alone. It is indeed embarrassing for us that women in our country are living in fear. In the last few years, the level of safety of women is constantly falling. The reason behind this is the continuous increase in crime. However if there is list of crimes against women in India, then it is too long; it involves acid attack, sexual harassment, dowry death, abduction, honour killing, rape etc. Since, more than half of the population of India are women, their protection must be our priority as many of them suffer from physical, mental and social abuse. Everyday and every minute some women of all walks of life are getting harassed, molested, assaulted or violated at various places all over the country. Girls often face acid attacks on streets and are kidnapped for the sex purpose. We are the ones who need to take initiative towards the safety of women for the betterment of the world so that each girl can proudly raise her head and walk. BODY SHAMING: A CURSE THAT MUST BE LIFTED In this era where social media is easily accessible, there is a strong emphasis on idealized beauty on platforms such as Instagram, magazines and television. Often we can see various advertisements and tips being offered on television and magazines about how to become slim or glorious. Indirectly this is hiding our imperfections of unrealistic beauty standards. Why do you think that someone should change the way they look? It is a result of inappropriate attitude of people towards other person’s shape and size. This form of serious bullying and harassment is known as body shaming. You must have come across a number of people who pass negative comments on people who are too fat or skinny. It is the habitude of people to criticize the bodies of different people. They do it as a part of humor but this humor can result in severe consequences which might affect the lives of individuals. Often the people who are censured on the basis of body, develop a feeling of self-rejection. This leads to low self-esteem and self-confidence. They even suffer from depression, social isolation and anxiety in many a cases. If you are body shamed don’t just overthink about it. Don’t try to change forcibly. It is your own body and you should rule over it. If the person himself is not ready to accept his body then no one else can make him realize the real beauty which he carries all the while but cannot see because of some unruly people. People will continue to talk because it is the tendency of human nature. So just ignore what others say. Focus on the things you like. You don’t need validation from anyone else to feel good about yourself. Everyone is perfect in their own way. If anything makes you differ from others is not your body or appearance, it is your uniqueness.

THOUGHTSEAL SPECIALS PRESENTS INFIBULATION Female genital mutilation is an issue affecting many women and children throughout the world. The WHO estimated that about 100-140 million women have been subjected to FGM in 28 countries in Africa as well as immigrants in EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA, NEW ZEALAND and even in the US. We have recently seen a whole lot of buzz on social media for one of them. Most of you would have heard about a rather rare type of surgery with a very odd name. INFIBULATION. It is the practice of excising the clitoris and labia of a girl or woman and stitching together the edges of the vulva to prevent sexual intercourse. It is traditional in some north-eastern African cultures but is highly controversial. Surprisingly, I don’t find it rare at all, because it was a part of their custom since ancient times but people tend to fear the unknown and frown upon that which they do not understand. It is internationally recognized as “A VIOLATION OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF GIRLS AND WOMEN.” Firstly because of the ways it is generally done, the tools and equipments used are not sterile and therefore very dangerous to those receiving the procedure. Secondly, women who undergo this are more prone to medical complications throughout their lives. But for those who practice it, it is a custom that is important to their culture and will be practiced regardless of what others think. For a female, having this procedure done is part of her culture and religious identity. While uncircumcised women are seen as “dirty and disloyal to their culture.” For a woman this procedure represents “femininity and modesty.” There are some cases in which young girls who have yet to get the procedure feel so left out from their surroundings that they attempt to perform the procedure on themselves. For a young girl to willingly slice her genitals; it shows how important the procedure is to her and her need to feel accepted into her culture.
Many laws have been created banning these practices with ‘no punishment’ for breaking these laws. It is great that these countries have these laws to protect young girls but it does not solve the problem if the laws are not being properly enforced. What I feel is that the first and the foremost thing required to be done to solve this issue is to change the ideology of females about their acceptance in the society. Females deny the fact that they were infibulated because they believe the procedure is necessary to be accepted by their families. It gives them a sense of pride and community. Traditions are passed from generation to generation and such practices are definitely rooted deep into the minds of young girls and hence they believe it to be started from their ancestors with their great-grandmothers, grandmothers, then their mothers being infibulated too and now it is their time to go through it. If we want to get some accomplishments in the abolishing of the process THE GIRLS HAVE TO BE EDUCATED about their rights and that it is not important for them to go through this much pain merely for being accepted by their husband. There are young girls who never wanted this to happen to them and question their existence every minute. The need of this hour is not laws and punishments, it is to save the girls from harming themselves because they think they can’t fit into the society, because they see their brothers being accepted without going through any of this and regret being who they are. We definitely need to STOP Infibulation and SAVE the girls from getting abused not only physically through the process but also mentally!

WILDFIRES: CLIMATE CHANGE AND DEFORESTATION, A GLOBAL RISK A wildfire is any instance of uncontrolled burning in grasslands, brush, or woodlands. Wildfires destroy property and valuable natural resources, and may threaten the lives of people and animals.Huge bushfires have been burning in Australia for months. But the risk of severe wildfires is increasing everywhere. After months of extreme heat and drought in Australia, the fires finally came. Australia experiences bushfires every year. But this year they are particularly extreme — and summer in the southern hemisphere has only just begun. Eight million hectares have been destroyed by the flames so far. Twenty-five people and millions of animals have been killed. Entire regions have been left without power and clouds of smoke now cover half the continent, according to the preliminary assessment of the devastating fires. But Australia isn't the only place which is burning. In 2019, online platform Global Forest Watch Fires (GFW Fires) counted over 4.5 million fires worldwide that were larger than one square kilometer. That's a total of 400,000 more fires than 2018. The reasons fires start and take hold in the first place are complex. But experts are now pointing to a connection between the increasing risk of wildfires and warmer ocean temperatures as a result of climate change. Fires are actually a natural process in the regeneration and renewal of ecosystems. However, 96% of the world's fires are now either deliberately lit or unintentionally caused by humans. Only 4% of fires start naturally; for example due to lightning strikes.
Deforestation, climate change and the risk of wildfires are all directly linked. More deforestation means an increase in climate change, which increases the chances of the vegetation drying out, which in turn increases the risk of fire and so on.And the fires continue to increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. According to Greenpeace, around 8 billion tons of CO2 are released by fire every year. This is about half as much as the emissions caused by the burning of coal around the world. The bushfires in Australia have already released half the amount of CO2 that the continent would otherwise produce during typical year. Forest fires are dangerous, and we should all take special precautions year 'round to make sure fires are not carelessly ignited. Forest fires threaten people needlessly, kill wildlife and destroy forests that provide a livelihood and recreation for millions of people around the world.Every year, countless acres of forests are burned because of human carelessness. So, let's join hands, take measures, and never let a careless matchstick light the the lungs of the earth on fire.....

WORLD AFTER THE PANDEMIC
'Corona', this is the only word that is echoing all around the world. Wherever we are watching the TV or swiping our phones there is only one thing in it - This virus, invisible to the eye has caused panic and fear among the so-called mighty humans around the world. But, this blog is not to arouse fear in the minds of the readers or to talk about the present situation. Let's talk about the future: The future of the world after this pandemic. Well, due to this virus we have changed a lot. It has changed the way we live nowadays. But, once all this is over, will this change persist? Will there be a change in the way we work? The way how our country works? Or how our whole world works? I think yes, these changes are bound to stay for a long time. Maybe, all the countries might be more futuristic so that there are no pandemics like this. And, if there happens to be one, they would be more ready to tackle the situation. There could be changes in the way we travel. In flights, the typical three-seating pattern might change to the two-seating pattern. Cost of travel might increase exponentially. There could be a problem in food security due to this lockdown which would lead to food shortages. There could also be riots for food. The case of unemployment could be at its peak. Millions could lose their jobs, daily wage workers would not have any money to live and would be forced to be involved in crimes and robbery. All of this could lead to a global recession. Well, there has to be something positive to think of why this pandemic is happening. Yes, there are some things. We would be more careful about hygiene and social distancing. The world will probably experience less pollution and global warming. I think progress has begun already. The internet is getting flooded with photos of clean rivers and seas and clean atmosphere. This implies that we can change the environment provided we try. We could also be a more civilized society where we know the importance of individual privacy and good etiquettes. Our personal lives would also change. We would understand the importance of family time and me - time.
So, I want to conclude by saying that there are going to be many changes on the world but we have to accept these changes and try to adjust with it and remember 'Stay home, stay safe'

ACID ATTACK
Acid attack is not something unheard of in India. It has shocked the conscience of our nation again and again - with mutilated faces, unbeaten survivors coming to the frontlines to share their horrific stories, and families driven to bankruptcy supporting recovery costs. The Indian Penal Code was modified in 2013 for the first time to add regulations tailored to acid attacks. But have we done enough? Do enough of us care? Why should we care? Why should we care anymore than we do for general fight for women's rights and safety in India about acid attacks? Accepting a drink from a local shopkeeper? Or rebuking harassment on the streets? Just being in home sitting on a couch? These are all known causes of attacks on acid attack survivors. The lastest story - is that of Piyali Dutta - who got caught in a crossfire and now is an acid survivor for life. Sonali Mukherjee's story - attacked while sleeping in her own house for standing up to harassment - is one that should keep all of us awake as it could have been, or still can be, anyone. 85% of victims are women, so acid attack can overwhelmingly be classified as gender violence. For the 15% male victims, the primary cause of attack is property dispute. What factors allow such attacks? Un-counseled anger and frustration is behind the crimes as much as pre-disposition to sociopathic traits, and violence and societal chauvinism plays a significant role (85% of the victims are women). But the real culprit to blame is the ease to get away with it. Anger over rejection causes the desire to lash out and inherent disregard for women in specific and human suffering in general seeds the thought, but the lax laws - both to limit availability and to counter the crime - is what lets the perpetrators convert their thoughts in to action. Paints and household cleaners remain another easy to avail source and even though regulation has now been passed in India, the police force is understaffed to go after the numerous shops selling acids as household cleaners or cleaners with acid above permissible levels.
So What is the solution? Awareness campaigns appealing to public to not sell, distribute, or use - especially with listed consequences of high profile convictions and warning women to be aware of the signs and to take threats seriously, these are the things that we need to remember. (in almost all of the cases there had been pre-warnings and even something as simple as knowing to scream when being approached is known to be a deterrent)And all this needs to have central govt. allocated funding. Same is needed for widely publishing immediate first aid steps (acid burns need to be treated fast and right to minimize damage). Elimination of bureaucracy is needed for victim rehabilitation. All the steps discussed will not ease the pain of the victim but at least help them seek justice. Let us all take pledge, that no matter what happens we will never do such a thing and we'll always stand for the victims. Wishing health to all. Signing off.
