Time later Thor and Steve woke up fresh having returned in the middle of the night after a mission and prepared breakfast for everyone else; Clint saw Thor kissing Steve’s hairline when he came looking for his morning coffee.

Then Thor pulled his chair back to sit at a press conference, and the cameras caught them hugging after a hard mission, and Steve was happy everyone knew who his boyfriend was.

"How are you feeling, little one?" came Thor's concerned question from the doorway.

“S-so cold.” Steve’s teeth were chattering as he drew the fifth layer of blankets around his frail body. He could barely look up at his fiance, not able to stand the disappointment that was coming his way.

Thor’s tongue clicked in disapproval while he glared down at his fiance with narrowed eyes. “As one would be if they'd decided to jump into a half-frozen river to prove something to my father. You're lucky you're not at the hospital, Steven."

Silently, he undressed in front of Steve, adding a layer of blush that had nothing to do with the electrical blanket that he'd been wrapped up in for the past hour. He felt Steve's eyes on his chiseled chest, knowing the man enjoyed the sight. He was upset with Steve for many reasons but he did enjoy how Steve never gave up a chance to check him out.

“You say that like he didn't goad me into it! Telling me I am not worthy of you, of being your fiance because I couldn't 'provide' and would be a burden," Steve tried to argue between shuttering breaths.

"And what was the end game here, Steven? To jump into the river and try to catch the boat?"

"Y-yes!" Steve's face was feeling hot, having absolutely nothing to do with Thor now getting under the covers with him. "It's my fault that the-the little boat got away, cause I didn't tie the knot tight enough or-or-"

"Or nothing," Thor soothed in a tone that dared. Steve to argue with him. "Or nothing, little one. Accidents happen. I would rather we lose an old and fraying boat and be forced to walk an extra few miles back home than lose you."

One day me and my crew were talking about projects to carry on as soon as we arrived back home, the next I was chained up to the wall of some pirate ship. Now, it didn’t smell or look like pirate ships are rumored to. I could almost say it was decent. They even gave me some food. But nobody talked to me -even though this was a crew that called itself the Howlers; but I learned that later. No, nobody talked to me, not until the Captain and his right hand came, looking very pleased;

Thor turned him around to be able to see his face when he said, “I can make you relax right now,” a suggestion that arrived with a raised eyebrow and the beginning of a smirk on his face.

“Oh, don’t be naughty!” Steve laughed, smacking his arm while his chest vibrated with joy. “This is the boss’ car, we can’t fuck inside!”

“Hey, who said anything about fucking?” Thor echoed, snorting.

Steve shook his head; no matter how hard Thor tried to play the innocent, Steve was always two steps ahead of his boyfriend’s plans.

The process of lifting the beer to his lips and swallowing the bitter liquid was one Steve knew well. He’d never forgotten the motion or the bitter taste, even if he could no longer get drunk. The motion is what he found comforting, after all.

Things he couldn’t escape and yet, the familiarity of swallowing drop after drop of alcohol is what stuck to him. He wasn’t sure why Thor wanted to bring him to the bar when they could’ve drunk in the comfort of their own home but he supposed it was best to get out of the Tower and try to get out of his head.

A third of the bitter amber liquid was gone before Thor’s hand laid over his, drawing him out of his thoughts. He tilted his head to look at his boyfriend, turning his hand over to weave their fingers together. The comfort of the warm, calloused hand did wonders to ground him and keep those thoughts at bay.

“Speak,” Thor said softly, squeezing his hand, “What’s on your mind, dear one? You’ve been holed up in your room these past few days and Natasha says that you’re declining invites to movie night.”

Steve sighed and swirled the liquid around with his free hand, his focus drawn back to the glass. He had hoped he could get through the night without anyone asking what was wrong or what was on his mind but he supposed Thor had every right to ask him what was on his mind.

“It’s not-” The protest died on his tongue, under Thor’s piercing blue gaze. He sat the glass down with a heavy thunk, “You are the last person I should be lying to. It’s just this time of year is difficult for me. Today is the date that my mother died and no matter the year, it’s never easy. During the war...”
